Yes James was a bully, and the way he treated Snape, no matter either of their races or backgrounds, isn’t okay. (And side note as someone mentioned in rb he was really harassing Lilly and that's also not ok).

But James was never bullying Snape for his background or blood status or any racial or classist reasons. He didn’t hate Snape for being a halfblood; he didn’t care about blood status.

He was just a dick 💀. Snape was an awkward kid, with poor hygiene, who was a little obsessed with Lilly, the same girl James was after. So as a teen jock he picked on him. (Again, obviously not okay). But he was never racist.

Making Snape a black man and implementing the same dynamic comes across differently, than a shitty bully. It could absolutely come across as James making fun of him with racist intentions. (Which is not true for the character, remember Voldy was the one praising pure bloods and James found himself in a war directly fighting that, but that’s a whole other thing)

I just really hope the writers are aware of that and write accordingly. I don’t want them to brush it off. Exposing James’ bullying in a heavier context like this could really add to the story, but only if the writers do it properly. I don’t want them to dismiss the significance of James’ bullying and the effect it had on Snape. Especially in this case if he’s just straight up racist 😭. That or they ignore that issue and try to really drive home the girl rivalry.
