The Sentience of the Elementals

As much as MONSTA claims the Elementals aren't alive, it's a popular fandom-wide HC-mainly because if it's not canon, then canon falls apart.

'Retak'ka was corrupted by his power and greed' 'The Voltra power corrupted Kira'na and began to drive her insane' These are canon happenings that directly resulted because of the Elementals' interference.

And sure, it can be argued that they would have been corrupted without the power anyway. But canon points to otherwise-especially when you take into account who holds the Elementals most of the time. Out-of-character things for Boboiboy are in-character for the Elementals, and that points to them being separate people rather than the same person, different clothes.

Yet, at the same time, if the Elementals can truly possess their wielders, then there are some disturbing implications about Retak'ka and Kira'na 'insanity'. Because that hints the powers that Boboiboy uses for good have actually manipulated others into evil.

Hence my current theory on the Elementals' true sentience.

The Elementals are alive, but not completely sentient.

So explanation time-remember Beliung's manic episodes? My current theory is that the Elementals are alive, but alive in the way an animal might be-definitely living, definitely alive, just not really able to think intelligently. Because each time someone has 'lost control', it's been associated with emotions. Kira'na's rage at Retak'ka. Retak'ka's greed. Beliung's manic happiness. Blaze and Ais ran on emotion during their fight on Baraju.

But. This actually changes depending on their host.

Think of it this way-without Boboiboy, the Elementals are just pure, raw elements and emotion. When he is their wielder, they take the form he does-gaining sentience, intelligence, separate personalities and their emotions being better reigned in. However, this is also because Boboiboy recognizes they are alive, and is thus able to subsequently grant them that autonomy and intelligence. Without that recognition, they are just bundles of raw emotion.

Hence why Retak'ka and Kira'na were overtaken.

Gamma didn't mean to overtake Retak'ka. Voltra didn't want Kira'na to attack so many people. But without the recognition of their holders, they are just emotions lashing out without a proper sentience or intelligence to direct them.

So I fixed the theory. This is my personal one yay.

Like any sensible being in the renaissance, elementary spirits desired salvation through Christ. Unfortunately, elementals were not born with immortal souls, and the only way to get a soul is to marry a human. Mind you, elementals do not steal souls, but Paraceclsus warns against the dangers of consorting with them. Marry a salamander, and her nature will draw her back to the flame, causing her to vanish into the fireplace with her new soul in tow. 

Paracelsus even recounts the tale of Peter Dimringer von Staufenberg, a nobleman who married a Nymph, only to denounce her as a devil and marry a new woman. A dire mistake, as the nobleman turned up dead shortly after the wedding. In Paracelsus’s eyes, this murder was entirely justified. By falsely repudiating his wife as a demon, God had granted the nymph the right to punish her husband for adultery.

Impulse was one of the most resistant to the shockcast antics.

A Basic Overview of Elemental Spirits

There are many types of elemental spirits in the realm of mythology and witchcraft. The most important thing to know about these spirits is that each species has a different set of rules and a different moral code. I know working with them may sound cool and fun, but to safely do so, you would need to learn each species' codes of conduct to be both respectful and safe. 

The term spirit is used as an umbrella term in this situation. It could be used to describe ghosts, demons, faeries, nymphs, etc. Anything that embodies the “spirit” of one of the elements: Air, Earth, Water, and Fire. 

We will start with Water Spirits. 

This category would include: 

Merpeople

Sirens

Selkies

Kelpies

Grindylows

Naiads

Camenae

Gwragedd Annwn

Water spirits are mostly known to be tricksters and pulling pranks on humans who interrupt their ways of life. Many of these species have tragic tales of how they came to be. Selkies are shapeshifting seal women that lounge around the coasts of Scotland and Wales. If a man were to steal their fur coat, they would be doomed to a life of land until their coat is given back. Mermaids are typically women that were found to be stowaways on pirate ships. Their legs were tied and they were thrown overboard in hopes of drowning. Many water spirits are deemed “vengeful” towards men (for good reason), which is why the element of water tends to be a Feminine element. 

Our next element will be Air.

This category will include: 

Sylphs

Pixies

Harpies 

There is not a lot of information about strictly “air” elementals. Just because a creature can fly, does not make it an air elemental. For example, Dragons would be considered a fire elemental even though they can fly. Air elementals don't avoid or seek out humans, however they can be tricksters when need be. 

Next is Earth. This will include:

Brownies

Dwarves

Bogles

Dryads

Unicorns

These creatures, while not actively seeking out humans, may help humans in times of need. Please do not take their hospitality for granted and DEFINITELY read up on their customs before attempting to work with them. 

Last would be Fire. This would include:

Dragons

Phoenix

Salamanders 

Angels 

Fire giants

These creatures actively seek solitude. They most likely will not interact with humans, even if called upon, which is why Angel work and Dragon work is so hard to get into.

This is by no means a complete list of elementals, they are just the most common ones of each category. Please let me know if you would like me to do a more indepth post on a specific species.

Hello! Back in 2019, I put out a request for betas on my then-finished manuscript. Since then, the book has MASSIVELY changed. I've fundamentally rewritten it TWICE now, and it's time for a redo. So I'm once again asking if people are interested in beta reading my book!

Synopsis (aka that thing I’m horrible at):

In a world where the Elements are literal gods with control over the forces of nature, their children, Elementals, exist among humans.  One such Elemental, a thief named Mel, finds herself pulled into a series of events with five others.�� Their goal: to defeat a growing threat to the world and the Academy, the seemingly last safe place for Elementals to call home.  Along the way, however, the small group will have to find themselves and their purpose, while sinking deeper into a dichotomy that challenges what they believe in, all the while trying to outsmart the sinister man threatening everything they hold dear.

You’ll enjoy the book if you like:

A colorful cast of diverse queer characters

A protagonist who is canonically asexual and a lesbian

The moral ambiguity of war, religion, and mass systems of government (and how people try to navigate it)

Be over 16 years old.  There’s not any graphic sex scenes or anything, but there’s a lot of cursing, and some sexual content.
