Feeling Overwhelmed? You're Not Alone. Let's Talk About It..
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know we all go through it. You’re balancing school, friends, family, and everything else, and suddenly, it feels like you're carrying the weight of the world. Lately, I've been feeling burned out, overwhelmed, and like everything is piling up at once. With school stress, exams, and the constant pressure to keep up, I sometimes feel like I can’t breathe. It's exhausting, and I'm sure some of you feel the same.
It’s so easy to get stuck in the cycle of trying to do everything perfectly. Every time you think you’ve got it under control, something else comes at you, and you’re back to square one and YES THIS IS ANNOYING!!!. It's like there’s a never-ending list of things to do, and no matter how hard you work, you never seem to catch a break.
And the worst part? The pressure from others. Whether it's friends, classmates, or even family, there's always someone asking you for help. Sometimes I feel like I’m the go-to person for everything—assignments, questions, last-minute requests. And don’t get me wrong, I want to be helpful, but it can get draining. Especially when you're trying to hold it together and just need a little space for yourself
For example:Today I couldn’t catch a break already stressed about exams, and in desperate need of rest. Just as I sat down to breathe, the calls and messages started.
One of my classmates began spamming me with messages, asking about a history and geography exam date that we ALL already knew. Then, another classmate began asking for English assignment answers. She wouldn’t stop. She kept sending, “Hi, hi, hi, hi…” over and over until I caved and responded. When I finally sent her the answers, her response? “Ahh, what would I do without you? You’re a lifesaver!” And while I know she meant it kindly, it felt so heavy I feel guilty. What about MY life? What about my peace?
In that moment, I realized how much I was giving to others and how little I was leaving for myself. I was pouring all my energy into helping everyone else while I was running on empty
And plus I’ve been in those moments when you’ve studied hard for an exam, thought you’re finally catching up, and then suddenly—a change happens. A test gets rescheduled, an assignment gets pushed to the last minute, and it feels like everything you worked for was just... wasted. I get it. And it’s okay to feel frustrated and angry about it. You’re allowed to feel this way. It doesn’t make you weak, it makes you human.
But here’s something I’ve been reminding myself lately: I am not responsible for everyone else's stress. It’s okay to say no, it’s okay to take a break, and it’s okay to not always have everything figured out. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s necessary.
Here 5 Tips That Are Helping Me Cope with Stress and Burnout
1. Set Boundaries and Protect Your Energy: I’ve learned that it’s okay to say no. If someone’s asking for help, and you’re already feeling stretched thin, it’s okay to tell them, “I can’t right now.” You can’t pour from an empty cup, and you deserve your time and energy as much as anyone else does.
2. Don’t Overload Yourself—Take It One Step at a Time: Break your tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks. Don’t try to do everything at once—focus on one thing at a time. It makes the workload feel less daunting and more achievable. One task, one hour at a time.
3. Rest is Not a Luxury, It’s a Necessity: Sometimes we push ourselves too hard because we think we’ll get behind if we take a break. But if you don’t rest, you’ll burn out. Give yourself permission to step away, even for just 10 minutes. Watch a comforting youTube video, take a walk, or close your eyes. A little time for yourself can give you the energy to come back even stronger.
4. Talk About Your Feelings—Don't Bottle It Up: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t keep it inside. Talk to someone, whether it’s a friendu trust family member, or even just writing in a journal like I do ..Putting your feelings into words can make a huge difference. It clears your mind and helps you see things from a new perspective.
5. Make Time for Self-Care: It’s easy to forget to take care of yourself when everything is going wrong. But self-care isn’t just about face masks and bubble baths (although that helps!). It’s about doing things that recharge you—reading, listening to music, or even just doing nothing. Find what makes you feel lighter and make time for it.
Let’s Take the Pressure Off Ourselves.
I know the world often tells us we have to be constantly productive, constantly moving forward. But the truth is, you don’t have to hustle all the time. It’s okay to slow down, take a breather, and focus on your well-being. The world will still be there when you're ready to take the next step. You are not a machine pookie. You are human, and you deserve peace. We’re not alone in this, even though it sometimes feels like we are. Everyone’s going through something, and sometimes just knowing that you’re not alone in your struggles can make a huge difference.Remember, it’s okay to not have it all together. It’s okay to be tired, to feel burnt out, to not always know what’s next. Life is hard, but you’re still here, still fighting, and that’s something to be proud of. I'm so proud of you

at last here it is!! the piece i wrote about mash for my final project for my geography class. i originally made this on arcgis and the site is being super annoying. i’m not able to post a link to the piece in its original form without doxxing myself, so i’m just going to put the text and photos directly in the post. (under a cut of course).
essentially, american media has a tendency to depict other countries in a very ignorant and inaccurate way, and while mash does have its own issues with this, I thought it would make a very interesting case study of the larger issue in hollywood because it’s an example where the writers were trying to get things right and trying to be genuinely progressive. based on that i made some conclusions about american individualism and how i think it affects our interactions with the rest of the world.
a few asides: some photos from the original version are removed because i’m unsure about copyright. i also had interactive maps embedded in the original which i unfortunately cannot transfer to a tumblr post. i changed the wording of a few spots to remove unnecessary geography terminology that i included to meet assignment requirements. im also really sorry if the writing is a little janky or if I got anything wrong! I made this entire project from start to finish (including research stages) in the span of probably about 48 hours. and i was very sleep deprived the whole time but I tried very hard to make it the best I could in spite of the time crunch I was under!
(also, i don’t know them and we aren’t mutuals so i feel too awkward to tag them outright, but huge thank you to tumblr user mashhistorian. i would not have been able to pull this piece together without the information i found on their website.)
anyways! full piece below the cut :)
————————————————————————
On February 28, 1983, roughly 106 million Americans tuned in to CBS to watch the finale of the 1970s sitcom M*A*S*H, cementing the 2.5 hour special as the most viewed episode of a television series in American history (a record which still has not been surpassed today). Not only did the show eventually help blueprint the AB plot structure and the dramedy genre, but it also promoted a strong anti-war stance to a large audience. Set in a fictional Mobile Army Surgical Hospital unit in the Korean War, taking place near Uijeongbu, South Korea, and debuting in 1972, M*A*S*H began airing on television at a time when the US military was still directly involved in the Vietnam War. This involvement ended only a year after M*A*S*H began, but the overall unpopularity of the Vietnam War in the years leading up to the show’s debut heavily motivated its anti-war position.
Though this message became the centerpiece far more often in seasons 6 through 11, the writers and cast always had the goal of emphasizing the tragedy and uselessness of war. Given the large audience that M*A*S*H quickly grew, this was a powerful position to take, and a rather unusual one at the time. Other shows that were airing during the same time period as M*A*S*H were usually comedies, and did not make such direct commentary on relevant political issues. However, although this message was very well intentioned, it was not always executed perfectly, and incongruities and inaccuracies sometimes arose. American movies and television shows are not strangers to inaccurate depictions of foreign countries, and in line with this issue, one criticism of M*A*S*H was its general inaccuracy in portrayals of Korean people and Korea itself. Given the way M*A*S*H subverted its own initial comedic structure and consistently made commentary which rebelled against the traditional politics of mainstream American television networks, the show’s depiction of Korea makes for a remarkably unique case study of the shortcomings of American media when portraying foreign countries.
Tumblr media
(A modern photo of Uijeongbu, South Korea)
Today, as a result of significant urbanization, the city of Uijeongbu has become a satellite community of Seoul with a population of roughly 460,000 people. Information on the size of the city at the time of the Korean War is very limited, but it seems that during those years Uijeongbu was likely a small village. However, M*A*S*H was not actually filmed anywhere near Korea, or even southeast Asia. Rather, it was filmed entirely in Southern California. The show had an indoor set at 20th Century Fox Studios, and an outdoor set located in Fox Ranch, now called Malibu Creek State Park. The producers actually chose the location for the outdoor set because they felt that it bore a resemblance to Korea. In some ways, this choice worked in the show’s favor when it comes to the physical geography of its canon location. Uijeongbu is surrounded on multiple sides by a mountainous landscape, and Malibu Creek State Park also boasts a mountainous backdrop.
Tumblr media
(A modern photo of Malibu Creek State Park. It has noticeably more yellow tones in its greenery than the modern photo of Uijeongbu.)
At the same time, however, the southern California filming location does not align quite so well with the setting of Uijeongbu. Southern California is warmer than northern South Korea, and has far less variance in temperature, with the Malibu area rarely having temperatures outside the range of 40-90 degrees Fahrenheit at any time during the year. In contrast to this, Korea has significantly more differentiation in the weather between seasons, with Uijeongbu sitting in the 20 and 30 degree range in winter and the 70 and 80 degree range in the summer. It is difficult to find information on how the Korean climate may have been different at the time of the Korean war, but based on the accounts of some former soldiers, it seems the winter weather could reach far below this range. While this would align with the numerous M*A*S*H winter episodes which emphasized the biting, windy cold, current information about Uijeongbu’s climate matches up less well.
In terms of greenery, the two locations seem relatively similar, though Uijeongbu is greener today than Malibu Creek State Park. It is hard to find photos of what Uijeongbu’s landscape looked like during the Korean War, but based on the photos available, along with photos of nearby Seoul at the time, it was likely less green than it looks today, partly because of the destruction caused by the war. If anything, this probably would have made it more similar in greenery to Malibu Creek State Park because of the combined greenery and desert-like landscapes that make up many areas of southern California.
The camera and television quality that was available at the time of the show’s production also likely plays into things, as the same locations within Malibu Creek State Park look different when photographed with less grainy cameras, and the show itself likely looked different when broadcasted onto the much smaller television screens of the 1970s. Overall, based on this information, the climate differences between Korea and California did not seem to cause major issues with M*A*S*H’s portrayal of Korea. Most likely, any noticeable discrepancies in the landscape and weather are attributable to older technology and mild dramatization typical of American television (although the fact that domestic landscapes are not treated with this same dramatization is still something which should be discussed).
Tumblr media
(A comparison of the M*A*S*H filming location from the time of filming to now. The grainier camera quality of the 1970s causes the colors to appear more brown than they are in reality.)
M*A*S*H’s biggest issue in its depiction of Korea lies in its portrayal of Korean people. There were no regular Korean characters, and a limited number of recurring ones. The majority of Korean characters on the show were one time characters, and were also rarely played by Korean actors (rather, they were frequently played by Japanese or Chinese actors instead). There was also the supposed issue of the language and accent being spoken inaccurately, and the one dimensional and cultureless way with which Koreans on the show were portrayed. Although M*A*S*H’s producers Larry Gelbart and Gene Reynolds actually went to South Korea to ensure greater accuracy in the show, their visit focused very heavily on the experiences of American doctors and nurses in the former 8055th MASH unit, a real MASH unit which existed during and after the Korean war and was instrumental in inspiring the show. In documentation of a 1974 news article on this topic, there is nothing indicating that Gelbart or Reynolds spent any of their interviewing and touring time with any Korean people (instead indicating they spent the entirety of the trip at the 8055th MASH).
Tumblr media
(Korean actor Soon-Tek Oh playing Mr. Kwang in an episode of M*A*S*H. He was one of only three Korean actors involved with the show (the other two being Philip Anh and Richard Lee-Sung. Each of these actors played a number of different Korean characters.))
Interestingly, this article also notes that Gelbart went to Korea once before in 1951. It is highly likely that this previous visit influenced the writing of Korean characters. At the time of Gelbart’s apparent visit in 1951, the Korean War would have been underway, which means that he likely saw a disaster-struck version of the country due to the destructive effects of the war. This is supported by a 1997 article in Las Vegas Sun which discusses M*A*S*H’s less than accurate depiction of Korean people from a more Korean-focused perspective. In the article, Gelbart says that he saw significant wreckage and destruction during his first visit to Korea, likely referring to his trip in 1951. It seems that the suffering and damage Gelbart witnessed upon his first visit to Korea informed the way he wrote Korean characters. But by focusing on the disasters Korean civilians faced, the rich culture they carried with them was neglected in M*A*S*H’s characterizations. The lack of dimension given to Korean characters leaves them with little in the way of individuality, so they end up defined largely by the tragedies they go through rather than by their culture or personality, an issue which the main cast of American characters on the show notably did not experience in the same way.
Tumblr media
(A photo of Seoul in 1950, damaged as a result of the war. This is the sort of destruction Gelbart would have seen on his trip in 1951, and given that he visited a year into the war, it's possible the destruction had worsened from what this image shows.)
Ultimately, M*A*S*H targeted an American audience, and the intent was to present this audience with a very anti-war message. It is clear that a lot of effort went into accurately portraying life in a MASH unit for American doctors and soldiers. However, the show’s extremely heavy focus on American experiences in the war, while effective for advocating the futility of war to an American audience, neglected the experiences and lives of Korean people. The fact that the show began as a thinly veiled allegory for the war in Vietnam likely only amplified the problem. It is clear that the unpopularity of the Vietnam war among the American population helped drive the desire to speak out against the war in the show, but because of the political volatility of the issue at the time, the Korean War made for a backdrop that CBS would find more acceptable. This was particularly because it allowed for the anti-war stance to be phrased in a more generalized manner, which slightly softened the blow of its political intentions.
However, the intense focus on this stance centered the experiences of Americans, and its broader generalization only further pushed Korean experiences to the wayside. In a very unfortunate way, this effect in itself is somewhat of an unintentional commentary on American involvement in wars. M*A*S*H, with its American writers, characters, and audience, aimed to send a message about the useless tragedy of war, using Korea as a means. But because the goal of the show was so centered in American politics, the events of the show centered American experiences as well. This often left Korean people misrepresented to the American population in the process, the same way foreign countries are frequently misrepresented to the American public when America enters a war in order to further some political or economic doctrine.
Tumblr media
(Nurses from the 8055th MASH unit in the Korean War. A surgeon from this unit wrote the original book which inspired the M*A*S*H movie and later also the TV series. On their trip to South Korea, Larry Gelbart and Gene Reynolds visited the unit and spoke with its members. They also spoke with some former members of the unit in the US to use their experiences as inspiration for episode plot lines.)
Furthermore, while M*A*S*H does have a number of episodes which tackle the issue of racism, they generally feature a domestically American brand of it. This was remarkably progressive for its time and place, but it was also American-centric, focusing on America’s issues with racism domestically while forgetting how those issues impact America’s interactions with other countries. Overall, M*A*S*H was remarkably progressive in the context of domestic American politics, but outside of that context, it was noticeably less so. The way the show’s characterization is frequently brilliant with American characters while falling short with Korean ones, as well as the American-centric political motivations that influenced the show, are indicative of a larger pattern of self-centeredness which has long permeated American society.
As globalization and cultural exchange become increasingly widespread in our world, it is important to recognize that historically this exchange has not happened in an equitable or balanced fashion. As Americans, we often expect people in foreign countries to have a certain level of knowledge about our culture while insisting that it should be acceptable for us to have a far more limited knowledge of theirs. The performatively individualized nature of our society causes us to lack community and fall into traps of self absorbed thinking, and as a result we do not hold ourselves to the same expectations for cultural understanding that we frequently level at others. Even when we try to have progressive political discussions, our focus on domestic political issues often blinds us to the impact our political problems can have on the rest of the world. Even if American pop culture was not as widespread as it is, it would still be important to make sure we put the same effort into depicting other people around the world as we do into depicting ourselves, for the sake of being respectful and building a more open minded world. But particularly because of the influence that American pop culture often has, it is not only disrespectful but irresponsible to misrepresent other cultures in our media.
In the case of M*A*S*H, Korean culture was relatively unknown in America at the time the show was on air. Today, because of the Korean Wave and the rise in popularity of K-pop music in America, awareness of Korean culture among the American public has likely increased from what it was when M*A*S*H was airing on television. Of course the offensiveness of poorly done depictions of other cultures are reason enough that we need to correct these mistakes, and of course we should not rely on television and movies to inform our perspectives. But the influence American media has on our mental mapping of other countries makes it even more important to get things right. In a world where cultures are being shared with increasing frequency and openness, giving foreign characters the same effort and accuracy we give American ones is the least we can do to start making this exchange more balanced.

The Practical Considerations of Aylin's Duty
Or... how to justify Dame Aylin spending so much much time in Reithwin. (Spoiler: I don't have the answer – let's speculate together.)
What does Aylin actually do as the sword of the Moonmaiden? There's a lot to work with, but I find myself taking from the same basket of vague "she goes off and kills some Sharrans, helps a Selûnite community and then moves on to the next one, knowing in an intuitive, Selûne-guided way where to go". I already wrote that. Writing a similar thing for the second time I need to describe Aylin working feels unsatisfying, and I find myself wanting more.
This is something that likely needs to be invented rather than discovered.
Aylin may be immortal and can fly, but energy, fatigue and the physics of flying, passage of time and distances still apply. I like to think of Aylin as having seen more of the world than the Sword Coast, but that cannot be true in a short period of time, because it's not practical for her to traverse large distances for one assignment. So if she HAS seen some of the actual Forgotten Realms (somebody else's joke incoming)
Tumblr media
then it would need to be in periods of time. She's in one region for a while, then goes to another and hangs a bit, then another and so on. It would make sense for her to stay in the region and address whatever is happening there, even if there is a bigger emergency somewhere further away. And whatever enemies of Selûne would know if Aylin is in the geographic area or not – communication, spells, etc. permitting.
Sure, one can also say Aylin's mother can magic-zap her wherever, but considering how Selûne didn't intervene in a one hundred year disappearance of her daughter, in any capacity that made a difference, I feel that would be too convenient of a solution and go against what Selûne and Aylin are like. Quick solutions are contrary to independence, and I almost feel Selûne wants to be helpful, but also also wants to let her followers figure it out on their own if they can. If they cannot, then she assists. Aylin's character, in turn, has a very strong materiality, tied to the mortal realm, where she's just magical enough to be unusual, but not otherworldly in a "considerations of geography, food, travel, etc. do not burden or concern me". To have her magic-zapped on the regular would narratively take something away… at least for me.
(This whole point is going to be moot if there's a fast travel spell I'm not aware of. Let me know haha. )
(But even then, being too convenient with spells… Maybe I just like obstacles.)
So, let's say Reithwin is a town in a region Aylin is freshly in, and I say freshly so Aylin gets to have several things to do in the area before her talents are needed elsewhere to a greater degree. There was enough time for Sharrans to do bad things, get organized etc etc. It'll keep her busy and local for a bit. Peak worldbuilding right here. And so whatever assignments she has are relatively close, and she regularly returns to Reithwin to spend time with Isobel, and Ketheric, and do work for Reithwin… I guess?
This is where I start frowning. Aylin cannot be the only one working towards Selûnite interests. Surely there are many talented Selûnite casters, fighters, healers, groups, etc., so everything doesn't depend on Aylin being where the emergency is. Someone as extraordinary as the daughter of a goddess would be equipped to handle extraordinary situations, and perhaps be tasked to do those more than anything else.
Does that actually track?
If Aylin is constantly aiding Selûnite communities over small altercations, or whatever else they need – supplies, assistance, etc. it… doesn't feel very interesting, long term…? Plus, it feels a little insulting that Selûnites would need that much help in surviving. I'm struggling to make this work.
Aylin is specialized to be Selûne's sword. She fights for her interests, and has an oath of vengeance. An oath of vengeance could tie her more to killing wrongdoers than stopping them from doing the wrong. One could also specialize her so much that matters of aiding communities isn't her job and she won't do it, but I can't see Aylin turning a blind eye to that – she does assist with the final battle in the game, for example. Though one could be pedantic and say, that's vengeance against whatever Selûnites got caught in that mess. But I digress.
What I'm saying is, Aylin's talents are combat and the assessment + execution of justice. So, narratively, there would need to be a lot of that in the Sword Coast region… in very specific ways that require the special, extraordinary talents of a goddesses' daughter. But then my question is, what is there for her to do in Reithwin, to warrant returning over and over again? There's Isobel, right, but… come on? I love them, but that can't be enough.
An obvious one is to make the clear distinction – it isn't strictly related to her duties. Aylin returns to Reithwin over and over again, because she chooses to, because this fascinating cleric broke her single-minded attention… But Aylin is so duty-bound, her duty and oath are so important to her… Even if she felt her version of "do you believe in love at first sight" (I'll never get over that line; it's deeply amusing to me for many reasons), she wouldn't just drop her duties for this. She'd struggle, still choose her work, maybe give it time which solidifies the impression this is something special, then try to negotiate with herself to give the space for it, not to mention it hinges on Isobel showing interest to begin with, pursuing despite Ketheric's disapproval, the reality that her duties are somewhat hindered if she's hanging out in Reithwin a lot, and the other reality that she's allowing herself this perhaps selfish pleasure, for a relationship in which she is constantly leaving Isobel.
Another, maybe obvious one is "Selûne sent here there because she knew and along the way gave Aylin some busywork to justify her being there" but that is… a little bit too rom-com for me? And too "Selûne is meddling". I think Selûne would leave Aylin to discover the pleasures of romance, love, sex and companionship on her own. I don't think she would break her hands-off approach for this, as glad as she probably is Isobel and Aylin found each other once it happens. Plus, the idea of Aylin ploughing fields of Reithwin or whatever, while some huge, epic conflict is happening between Selûne and Shar over the bodies of mortals, and there's so much vengeance to execute… I don't think Aylin would be very happy about missing that, no matter how much in love she is. I'll even raise you a "she might feel bad over it, feeling as if she's not living up to her oath".
The third option is that my initial assumption of Aylin coming and going with some regularity, never absent for too long, is false… and that Isobel and Aylin weren't afforded a lot of time together at all. My brain is too poisoned to conceptualize the idea of Isobel being in love with Aylin for years, who stopped by, oh, maybe three times? Right? The vibe they give off in the game is two people who really, really know each other. Like, this is a committed, long term relationship.
So…
Does someone have a really good idea about this?

The PQ4R Reading Method
A technique for better comphrension and memorazing of textbooks
Steps
Preview: Read the introduction and headings, look at the pictures, graphs, etc
Question: Ask yourself questions before reading. What are you trying to learn from this?
Read the material/textbook
Reflect: Were the questions answered? How? What did you learn?
Recite: Think about the material, discuss it, write it down, explain it to the wall
Review: What were the main points? Did you understand them? Were your questions answered?
Pros
Helps you have better reading comphrension (understand the material=easier to study)
It is really effective in that aspect.
It's quick. Preview and Question takes a few minutes and if there is an assignment with the material, it can cover the Recite part
Cons
It cannot stand as a study method on its own. It is amazing to undertand the topic, but not to study it. It needs to be complemented
Disclaimer: even if the "con" makes you think "oh, i shouldnt use this method because i need to complement it", thats false. The reason for this is because it is a reading method instead of an studying one. It works wonders and will help you a lot even if it doesnt seem like it.
Subject we recommend for this method
History, Geography, Literature, Civics/Ethics, Sociology, all subjects with that way of working

On January 7th 180 the worlds very first blackboard was put up by James Pillans,.
James Pillans was, an educator and headmaster at the Royal High School in Edinburgh, who hung a large slate on the classroom wall. He used the blackboard to teach geography lessons, and is also credited with inventing coloured chalk. His chalk was made from ground chalk, colour dyes, and porage.
Before the invention of the blackboard, students did have access to individual slates, which they could write their assignments and answers on. This helped cut down on the cost and need of the sometimes unavailable paper and pencil supplies, but still offered no community of thoughts. These slates were usually just a wood board painted over with black grit.
The blackboard was a revolutionary concept that transformed the educational landscape. It allowed teachers to write large diagrams, maps, and key points for the entire class to see, and it fostered a more interactive learning environment. Nowadays the blackboard has been replaced by whiteboards.
Pillars was also a bit of reformer and advocated universal compulsory education, he travelled Europe observing schooling methods in other countries.
He died at Inverleith Row, on 27th March 1864 and is buried on 1 April in the graveyard of St Cuthbert's Church, Edinburgh. His grave lies at the west end of the north extension.

Heeeey I loved your tattos HCs!
Do you have anything about what kind of HS/uni professor they'd be?
Hii! Omgg thank you 😭😭😭 this is really nice
I tried to write this with my limited knowlage of how American schools work (that i picked up from tv shows and cartoons). I'm from the Balkans and our schools are a bit different, so if there's anything inaccurate i apologise!! (Also this is based on highschool bc I'm in highschool)
Asra
• They would teach art
• One of the favourite teachers in the entire school
• None of the assignments they give are what the school board tehnically require, but they encourage creativity
• Also he has no care when it comes to grading so you can come to class with a roll of toilet paper and still get an A
• There is no learning in his class, it's more like an extended break
• I imagine they don't even show up half of the time
• It's a miracle they haven't been fired
• (The miracle is called Nadia)
Nadia
• As a teacher, i think she'd do history or geography
• But overall, she's definetly the principle
• If the school is short staffed, she can definitely multi-task
• As a teacher, she'd be very strict
• No talking, no whispering, no phones...really follows every rule
• And she's a little harsh on the grading too
• But it isn't hard to get a good grade if you listen to her lectures and take notes
• She's also very willing to help and really aims to teach
• If you ask, she'll find the time in her day to go over everything with you
Julian
• The obvious answer is chemistry and/or biology
• But i feel like his classes would be so much more
• He gets really immersed in teaching and he knows how to hold the students attention
• Half the time doesn't even notice the bell
• He's not a strict teacher by any means, but he does want everyone to learn
• When it comes to grading he's very flexible
• If he thinks you understand the subject, he'll give you a good grade even if it's not EXACTLY by the book
• Of course, he's open to helping students with his own subject but if you need help with other subjects, he's willing to help in that department too
• If you wanna get out of a class, just ask him about his day before he starts the lecture. He'll start rambling about random things until the class ends
Portia
• She would teach language and literature
• She's also very liked by the entire school
• Puts her whole soul into teaching
• Like there's no way you're coming out of her class uneducated
• She decorates her classroom and has a LOT of plants
• In fact, she probably takes care of most school plants
• And shows the janitors how to properly take care of them if she can't
• Teams up with Asra for most school projects and decorations
• Her classes are very calming but if she's really passionate about a certain subject, be prepared
• Will also ramble before class and talk to the students, but she's more focused then her brother
• Spends her breaks in the library or with the lunch ladies
• Also the type of teacher to bring snacks every day into the teachers lounge
• Honestly, everyone likes her
Muriel
• I'll be honest, I've been wracking my brain about this for so long but i cannot for the life of me see him as a teacher
• In pre school, maybe
• But with high-schoolers? No...
• I do see him as a janitor, however
• He'd be perfect for the job
• The kids wouldn't want to mess with him because he seems mean and scary
• (And because Asra can also be mean and scary)
• He's very fast and only focuses on doing his work as fast as he can
• He's tall, he's strong...you get my point
• He would definitely bring Asra lunch every break and they would sit and chat in his classroom or the Janitors closet (they don't mind the small space)
• Eventually, Asra introduces him to other teachers and they all become friends and welcome him into the teachers lounge
Lucio
• He's a PE teacher
• If you're in his class all i have to say is....good luck
• Most students skip his class
• EVERY class
• He will work you TO THE BONE
• He doesn't understand that high-schoolers can't compare to his professionally trained self and expects everyone to meet him at his level
• For a PASSING grade
• If you want a GOOD grade you'll have to impress him
• And before you think he should've been fired, that isn't possible
• HE'S FUNDING THE SCHOOL
• Nadia is aware of his..."teachings" but she can't do much about it
• With him gone, half the school goes too!
• Eventually everyone tells him to calm down and he does
• (But he's really passive agressive about it)
• The students forgive him cause he's hot
As always, if anyone wants to add on, please feel free!

i'm not sure if you have already answered a question like this... but this is a two parter so buckle up! i'm a high school senior (in the US) and i'm very uncertain about my future and need a nice big GOAL to push for. right now i think urban planning is it. i'm hoping your answers might clear some stuff up for me.
number 1- what got you into urban planning/urban design? was it something you saw in your community? at what age did you realize this? what kinds of things did you do when you were younger that you realize now could have indicated your future interest in this career path?
number 2- materials. do you have a list of literature, articles, resources, or creators that you like to go to for indulging personal interests in urban planning/design. this can include university assigned literature too ofc, i'm just wondering if you have any recs of materials to consume that could kind of point me in the right direction. (aka help me see if my current interest is real by seeing if i'm geniunely interested in literature on the subject of urban design)
anyways, ik that was a long one!!! pls take your time 😭 and cool sideblog you have just gained a follower :)
hi pluto! no worries about the length, I have a science degree so I'm used to 2000 word papers ahaha (this is not to brag btw it was a pain in the ass the whole time I studied it, would only recommend if it's your jam)
so glad to hear you have a goal and I get that feeling! tbh when I look at the many multifaceted things I want to make a difference in, being able to do something that influences people's lives in such a fundamental and behind-the-scenes kind of way really keeps me going.
OKAY so the thing that got me into this was actually permaculture! when I was your age we did a geography unit on feeding the world while conserving the environment, and, for context, my high school also had what was basically an accelerated design program at the time (totally by accident, one dedicated teacher and my grade who were Very Into this kind of thing). basically, back to geography, where that unit landed was
"Permaculture is a design system for the creation of socially, economically and ecologically sustainable settlements, whether in rural areas or metropolitan cities.” – Bill Mollison
and I was like! aha! design! see at this point, roughly 7 years ago, urban design wasn't that big of a field yet (most degrees in it have only popped up in the last decade or so) and so I thought a career in design at that point meant one of three options that didn't really appeal to me: architecture/ landscape architecture / interior design, industrial design/ engineering, or graphic design/animation. BUT!! on this day I was proven wrong!! because the definition in itself said design! and it was about being socially, economically and ecologically sustainable so I'd get to do Social Justice Things and Environment and Biology Things as well as use my knowledge of smallholder farming and business running from my side gig of breeding guinea fowls. At that point I knew what I wanted to do! I looked up permaculture degrees, and found nothing at a university level--which I knew I wanted to study because to understand the planet and our design needs, I thought I needed a lot more education.
Instead I applied to a bachelors of environmental science at several universities in Australia. The employment prospects were good, and I did biology in high school, and climate change was a Big Talking Point I thought I'd do well to understand a bit better. As well as ecology--living in Queensland at the time, it's one of the most rapid areas of land clearing. Urban design came later; for my fourth year I was required to do a year-long research project and write a thesis on it. There was a lot of emphasis on choosing something you know you can do for an entire year, and at this point I had three and a half years of backlogged ideas on how to make changes to our civilisations to be better for the environment, so I knew I wanted to do something that would allow me to express them in design. One of my capstone subjects was one on river catchments, and in it we studied something called water sensitive urban design. I arranged a crossover project between my lecturer for that subject and someone from the school of design at my university I later found out was the course coordinator of the master of urban design. She suggested this degree to me, and I enrolled--just at a different university to where I did my undergrad. tbh, it's everything I wanted at 17 when I wanted to design human scale civilisations that incorporate the principles of permaculture. I only wish working in the industry was more activism-led and less following a status quo that has historically been terrible for the environment and nonwhite people, and is making much too slow progress to remedy this.
PART 2: okay this will be a short one because I am that student who literally NEVER does any of their readings. I do them, eventually, at the end of my degree (like I did for environmental science) where I just save all the links and read through EVERYTHING for my entire degree at once. so I could not tell you what the good readings are. HOWEVER I want to push something: this field is NOT about reading. it is rooted in science, yes, but unlike something like biology it is a much more applied science. At its core, it is about problem-solving and innovation. It's about listening to your users. It's about holding their perspectives and their longings, and that of the land as well. It's about listening and creating. So I want to ask you these questions: 1) can you draw, whether on paper or digitally? Can you visualise things in your head and then translate that to a document? 2) can you collate several genres of information (planning law, ecology, social needs of MANY groups of people, stakeholder conditions, hydrology, the user experience, just to name a few) and use this to create a solution that covers all bases? and 3) can you listen to the land and the stories it tells, and would like to tell? Have you listened to you local Indigenous community about who they were before colonisation, how they feel now, and what they want to be? Are you ready to be the person who helps them see that vision? Are you ready to be the person who helps us see a vision of less traffic, of low carbon lifestyles, of being outdoors and meeting each other in peace?
I'll put up some links for reading sometime down the line when I hunt down where I saved them all to, but the reason I tend away from making this discipline too academic is because you're designing for the everyday person. You're not designing only for the small percentage who are capable of having academic conversations. You need to understand what someone on the street is saying behind their words, at least as much as you need to understand something some academic wrote in a paper or a book or even a council website. You're here to listen to the marginalised, listen to the need for connection of the wealthy who are hiding it behind accumulating things, and then have those perspectives in mind when you build up a collection of tools on how to make those needs a reality.

I wish to know more about splatoon, tell me about ur ocs and how they fit into the lore!
TONYAH OCS TIME
let's start with my sonas
Tumblr media Tumblr media
why do i have two? well... first one, tuna, was made literally just when i jumped into splatoon fr(before that i just liked comics about squid sisters i saw on my tl haha). they reflect me a lot more: a depressed mentally unstable bitch with nothing to do but hang out with friends. in the version of splatoon universe where they exist, they and their bestie formed their own 'squidbeak splatoon' parody (neo new squidbeak splatoon as we call it) and ended up doing basically what agents do in splatoon - war crimes /hj (im not willing to describe the entirety of splatoon story for this post im sorry). they're basically an agent 3 replacement, i think i lean into being a leader in my friend groups a lot too. they also write music, just like me!
second one, neon, is a little different. it's like they just take aspects of me from a different kinds of episodes. they are meant to be new agent 3's replacement(so they're canonically just splatoon 3's protagonist) BUT they don't have a smallfry buddy, because their buddy is my favourite salmonid - flipper flopper. they reflect the nicer part of me, they're also selectively mute because at the time i struggled a lot more with speaking and it was way easier for me to say something with gestures than to actually open my mouth without having words stuck in my throat haha. they are also an inktoling, a genetical fusion of an inkling and an octoling because i think both fit me well!! and tbh i would assign my mom octoling and my dad inkling they have such hardcore coding it's insane.
Tumblr media
oshizushi and iwashi were probably my first actually thought out splatoon ocs.
in splatoon world creativity is a very(an i mean very) big thing, self-expression too. and oshizushi is another music person. while iwashi is a chaotic designer with her own brand going. oshi is also from the domes, it's just. a fact.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
kaigara and hitodeko! so, in my splatoon ocs' geography there's a new town - Kelpton. it's a beach city with very unstable weather, and because of this they have turf war stages adapted for any weather. because idk if you know that but inklings and octolings dissolve in water, they fucking DIE in water. those two are Kelpton's idols! and of course they also have to do weather forecast since it's such a big thing for Kelpton. kaigara comes from a poor family from this town and worked hard to get money, and hitodeko is a daughter of an octarian elite soldier, she enjoys life to its fullest after leaving the domes.
Tumblr media
then there's team family!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
they're a bunch of dumb teenagers who play turf war in team. they're meant to be more coroika(splatoon manga) inspired . purble and vintage are like toxic older siblings to bucket and stripes who are innocent babies of their team. (none of them are actually related AND in their family dynamic purble is mom-assigned to all of them lmao). also bubbles the salmonid daughter of stripes! she yoinked a golden egg from vintage(he steals from grizzco, this boy is trouble) and raised salmonid as her daughter with help of ... oshizushi! and a bit of iwashi's help there.
music is big in splatoon. all of splatoon music has lore, we have so-called splatbands - every track has an in-game band behind it. and so i had to make my own splatband.
Tumblr media
the celestigals!! an all-girls-with-the-small-exception-of-gui band!! they write songs about how shit love is!!!! that's my genre KJSFDBHFKLJKFDJSN
sepia is a cuttlefish, elysia is a sea slug (you've seen this one before.), shinobu is a sea anemone, gui is an incognito gobi and ori is a tiger crab i think. sepia is like their leader and a vocalist, she's the most unbearable person ever but they vibe with her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sepia also lives wth namihiko, her ex boyfriend who's...an octoling who thinks he's an inkling. he doesn't have anything going in his life except for that little confusion except for the fact that he's very chill and can take sepia's anger issues and wild temper pretty well.
Tumblr media
this is reena(she/he/they)! they're an insanely talented inkling who can play a lot of different instruments and they usually work for others. he helped kaigara and hitodeko in fact!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BRANDA. she doesn't have TOO MUCH lore going on, but she was a technician in octarian military, then she ended up in kamabo co and was one of the sanitizing octolings based on a concept from haikara walker(an octo expansion artbook), and then somehow ended up FUZZY OOZED. AND NOW SHE'S A FUZZY OCTOLING. BRO DOESN'T HAVE NO MEMORY BUT PURE VIBES AT THIS POINT. i love branda.
Tumblr media
here's also DJ duali38 or duali! she exists purely in one au where on winter holidays sanitized octolings just suddenly can't obey tartar and CHILL and CELEBRATE. she became a DJ after ahato/acht left and she's just a small goober..
Tumblr media
another oc who's kinda from au is arctic (octoling on the right)! she's neo agent 3's girlfriend who studies linguistics and has a dictionary with a lot of attempts to decipher human language(s). in this version of splatoon 3 they both are agents and work together and all. i can't not point out how there was a fun period where i did an experimental ask thing for another au of mine and someone mentioned arctic and i blew up i actually don't think i'll ever recover from how cool that was
Tumblr media
polpopic never had too much lore but she's a pro salmonrunner who's also almost just as tall as her main weapon sloshing machine and the fact that she's that efficient with it despite her size is terrifying to everyone around
Tumblr media
also kurakka exists. i never gave them lore but they're a sanitized octoling who looks like they could be a manager who doesn't give a fuck. i wish there was a way to write their lore that way. (they just don't fit splatoon lore. but i mean.)
if you've read the entire thing thank you so much for this question thunder it was nice :) a lot of my ocs are underdeveloped im pretty sure it's very ovious but i love them all

Wooo! Geography and sustainability and stuff and stuff
When, in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one student to take upon themselves the burden of writing a very long (not really all that) academic post on a website they barely know how to use because said website was recommended to them by their actual genuine university as a blog website for an assignment.
And then said student forgets to do the assignment, falls deliriously ill, and is now finally getting round to it hilariously late and because all of their other assignments seem so, so much more difficult and mentally strenuous to do on a day where they really do not want to have to deal with that.
So, here we are. A comically large wall of poorly grammatically structured text, talking about (drumroll please) geography! More specifically "Human" geography, or Urban Geography or whatever you want to call it. It's my chosen field of study (despite my best judgement) and I've been tasked by the powers that be, to create a blog to inform and educate the nebulously defined general public about ~exciting~ developments and "Gamechanging innovations" Now, to tell the truth, this was not a particularly easy thing for me to do, because quite frankly my chosen field of study isn't really one of those ones you'd associate with constant innovation and invention, at least in my mind, but thankfully the university provided a long list of various subjects we could look at and study and then report back unto you (the reader, stand in for the entire rest of the world) about.
Small issue there, was the vast vast majority of what we were offered as potential "Gamechanging innovations" either drove me to madness with boredom, or absolutely did not seem like they were exactly "Gamechanging" (could be worse, one of the ideas offered to another discipline was the hyperloop, which is quite frankly a stupid idea that is dead in the water and could have just been normal highspeed rail)
Take, for instance, "Autonomous vehicles". Yeah. Now, suffice to say there is issues with the concept of self driving vehicles, mostly about how the technology is not exactly safe right now, and well, that's just the start of the rabbit hole there. (and really, just build a train, tram or other preferred method of public transport)
There was another one, which look promising to my untrained eye, namely "The Internet of things" which I had no idea what it was, so doing what any self respecting academic in-training would do, I googled it. Apparently, the "Internet of Things" is the catch-all term for devices that exchange and communicate data over the internet.
I'm no expert, but at an initial reading, that did just seem to be most things these days, and was hardly groundbreaking or new, so I dug a bit deeper into the scholarly side of the ole internet for some answers. Thankfully, I found a very helpful little paper (linked here) which clarified, and I quote:
"The term Internet of Things generally refers to scenarios where network connectivity and computing capability extends to objects, sensors and everyday items not normally considered computers, allowing these devices to generate, exchange and consume data with minimal human intervention. There is, however, no single, universal definition."
So it's the smart fridges, the fancy new cars and all of that lovely stuff, which buzz all of their data and such onto other devices on the internet. Now, of course my immediate thought was that it means my everything is now spying on me, but I was quickly relieved to remember that that changes effectively nothing as I do in fact own a phone which already does that.
The main benefit that seems to be proposed by this is the fact that all of this data allows rather effective monitoring of things like emissions and water quality and power usage and potentially good ole agriculture and so on and so forth, which, yeah, I can see the uses, maybe, but I can also see the glaring potential privacy, legal and potential tech issues.
A lot of people may not like their cars telling some company about where they've been all the time, and how much gas they've used. That's fair and understandable. Not to mention, the data gathered could be wrong, or otherwise rendered useless, effectively poisoning the data-well if enough things go wrong, or are just falsely reported to the public.
(It's at this point that I realise, I don't exactly know if this is quite what the uni wanted me to write, but hey, at least it's honest)
Anyway, I've overstayed my welcome in rambling about all of these things, and will be back (later) to complain/ do my assignment more, have a lovely day and remember that if you ever think about revolutionizing public transport, ask yourself if a bus or train would do the same thing, better.

Day Seventeen
The ninth grade English teachers recently had students choose an image of themselves and write one-page personal narrative about it. They made a display out of string and clothespins, printed everyone's pieces in color, and hung them on the display. It's SO cool, and so much better than white walls. I took a "five minute field trip" with my second section of Global Studies so we could look at their work. They were all talking about wanting to find theirs when they came into class, so I figured we should just do that to start with.
Then they- and the students in my other two sections- used today's class to finish putting together their geography projects and practice presenting them. The practice went the best in my third section; groups actually made notecards, went out into the hall to practice (I stood in the doorway so I could see them). and so on. In the other two sections, it was less extensive and far more reluctantly done, but I was able to show a few students that it was beneficial because they were able to correct their pronunciation, get comfortable reading some of the larger numbers that might've tripped them up, and things like that.
Whether they practiced or not, though, I'm looking forward to their presentations. It's been a while since I've done a group project like this with freshmen, so it's been a learning experience for me as well as for them, and I think it's been a good one.
In APGOV, I was back at the front of the room- after days of project work, presentations, and guests- to begin the first unit of the actual AP curriculum: foundations of American democracy. I called students' attention back to the lessons we'd done on in the first couple days of school about the years leading up to the Revolutionary War. Then I showed a Crash Course episode on the subject, asked questions to review their knowledge of the Declaration of Independence, and lectured on the task our Founders had to form a government once the Declaration had been signed. They're supposed to read the Articles of Confederation and US Constitution by Monday (we have a guest speaker tomorrow), so this lesson is segueing into the next one really obviously.
What else?
I screwed up a bit, but it's not totally my fault. I've always moved the tables in my room around for various activities, but their default layout is rows. A teacher trick I learned years ago to ensure they got put back into those rows correctly was to mark their placement on the floor with a sharpie. I've done it for years, but we've got a new Head of Maintenance this year, and he came in to fix a busted lightbulb, saw the marks, and made the custodian assigned to my hallway clean them. I found out and apologized immediately; it had just never been an issue before! The custodian told me not to worry about it because he's super nice, but still.
I also had a couple meetings today, and I think I handled those well. It's Thursday, so, of course, we had a PLC meeting in the morning; we spent it discussing some upcoming events and directives from the leadership team, then filling out the professional goals paperwork we're required to do each year. And, during my prep, I had a less formal meeting with Dean 1 about the challenges the new teachers are facing. There's nothing extraordinary, it's all typical new teacher stuff, but he wanted my thoughts on what would be most helpful.
And, as longtime readers know, one thing I'm rarely shy about is giving my thoughts. It's good to have admins who appreciate that trait!

Hi. I uh don’t really know how to start this it’s just that I’m a freshman in high school and I have this history geo class and the teacher scares me. I know she doesn’t really mean to she’s just kinda intense and her class is too. Im at a bit of a disadvantage because I was pretty much never taught geography. I didn’t even know the basics until a few years ago when I had to ask my parents how many continents there are. Back to the topic at hand I have a project in her class that we’ve had assigned for a little while but I completely forgot about it with all the homework from hers and other classes and it was supposed to be due today but I was out today because i got hit with a painful mixture of Dysphoria, Executive Dysfunction, Anxiety, and Lack of Sleep. So I spent the entire day working on it but I’m still not finished and it’s freaking me out. Sorry for rambling I just kinda needed to get this out. Thank you.
All my love, 🧪
Hi, kiddo!
High school is stressful, isn't it? Your story reminds me of way back when my geography teacher would make us draw perfect maps, otherwise she'd dock a lot of points from our grade. So hey, you're not alone in the scary geography teacher department!
I think I answered this a day late- I hope you were able to finish your project on time. You're working hard and clearly have a lot on your plate, so don't be discouraged if you didn't get a perfect grade. The important part is to keep learning!
If you don't mind a little advice from me, because the executives in my head have been dysfunctional for quite some time. I always hated to hear this from my own parents, but writing things down (use your school planner if you have one!) and setting a schedule for yourself (or use alarms, if you tend to forget things easily) might help you manage your school-life balance. These methods doesn't work for everybody, but it's definitely something to try. Hopefully you will find some strategy that will make high school more manageable and less overwhelming 😵‍💫. I'm rooting for you, kiddo!
Take these hugs with you, too, to finish out the week strong 🫂🫂. You got this!

Hiya, I’ve absolutely fallen in love with your writing (especially because you don’t leave Gaz out 😌) and Was wondering if I could get a match up for one of the cod boys?
I use she/her pronouns and am probably what most people consider to be the bi gamer girl stereotype. My MBTI is E/INFP (just noticed we’re the same!) as I tend to swing wildly between intro and extroversion. I do enjoy being social but I’ve also got some pretty extreme anxiety. I’m not big into astrology but when people find out my big three are Aquarius/Aries/Aries they’re not surprised.
I’m an Aussie and am 170cm tall so I’m not used to being much shorter than most people (growing up I was a head taller than literally everyone so I may have developed a complex 😔) I played lots of sports growing up and am actually joining the navy soon.
My fashion sense mostly consists of Adam Sandler like attire or slutty club fit with docs. I love board games/video games/dodgeball etc and am wildly competitive. I hate cooking and suck at it completely, and my room always looks like a bomb site. I love roller coasters and the beach, but only if there’s waves. I have a degree in history/geography and am 100% a cat person. I have a care bear tattoo and would have more if I wasn’t broke. I’m a very physically affectionate person and I cry a lot over media and am very sensitive but not in a way that I’ll get upset over someone insulting me, more in a I’d cry if I stood on a cats tail. I’m very loud and once you get some alcohol in me I am the life of the dance floor even though I can’t dance.
Kyle "Gaz" Garrick
a/n aww thank you so much for requesting! i hate when people leave gaz out so yk I'LL always make sure he's included :) also love a fellow INTP!
How you met: Military You fanned yourself as you entered the large school building. Despite your Navy uniform consisting of a long white skirt and blouse, the Australian heat was making it unbearable. You had the unfortunate assignment of attending a career day at one of the local school's to talk about your unique career path. You were directed by the secretary to chat with a few other military personnel before the presentation. Eventually, you saw a friend from the Australian Army chatting with another man. As you approached, you noted that his uniform was significantly different than yours as indicated by the colors and adornments. "Private!" you exclaimed as he turned to you, "fancy seeing you here." You chatted regarding a few important life events before he directed your attention to the man next to him. "This is Sergeant Garrick," he introduced as you shook his hand, "Sergeant and previous Special Air Service member." You couldn't help but laugh slightly. "A Brit? What's he doing here?" you joked and Kyle returned with a smile. "Thought I see what your military is about," he began and you couldn't help but swoon with his pronunciation, "might make me consider joining myself." You continued to jab at the difference in your countries until your friend found himself in another conversation. You didn't mind being left with Kyle as it offered you the opportunity to discuss why you enlisted following your competitive nature and how you had previously gone to school for a history and geography degree. "So why are you here?" he asked but your explanation was cut off with the opening remarks from principal. You sat down next to Kyle, hoping you could continue you conversation over dinner.
A peek into your relationship: "You call this a beach?" you asked as you finally arrived at your destination. Your boyfriend, Kyle, laughed as you looked at the rocky shores of Brighton. While it was beautiful and you loved the pastel homes, it was far from what you knew back in Australia. "Trust me I would bring you here for more than just the beach, love," he reassured and directed you along the boardwalk. As you walked with your hands interlaced, you were led into a large game center. The color-technic lights of the various arcade games and crane machines lit the room as you adjusted from the bright sun outside. "Heard you were competitive," he joked with a smirk on your face and you knew today would be a challenge.
"Fuck me!" Kyle groaned as you won yet another round in Mario Kart. "For someone in the SAS, you sure don't have a lot of skills," you teased and collected your reward tickets. You and Kyle were evenly matched but it was clear your competitive spirit was putting you slightly ahead of the competition. As you wandered around, you saw a row of crane machines. "I hate those," you mumbled and it was as if a light turned on in Kyle's mind. He held your hand as you looked at each one, finally trying your luck with a machine full of Care Bears. As you complained over how they were a scam and impossible to win, a determined Kyle placed a token in and went to work. As you leaned over his shoulder, you were shocked when he picked up a large plush Care Bear and dropped it into the basket. "What the hell," you mumbled as he retrieved the price for you. "There are some things the Navy doesn't teach you," he beamed before kissing you on the cheek. The rest of the day you pondered a few things. First, what was the set of skills he had alluded to? and second, would it be possible to get another tattoo of this bear?

okay so i have a plan

Finding My Way To Economics
Tumblr media
Suki here,
Many moons ago, when I was a mere 15 years old, I was choosing my A-Levels. I went looking for a shiny new subject that would combine all my skills and interests. Would it be sociology, psychology or maybe even business studies? Those classic subjects that all prospective A-Level students seem attracted to.
To find the answer to my question, I decided to research the subjects I found most enjoyable and the ones that would go best with maths. The first place I decided to look was in my school library where I knew there were magazines designed specifically to help people choose their A-Levels. Having looked through several publications, while I found them all interesting, it wasn't until I picked up the November 2020 issue of Economics Review that I was truly entranced.
I stumbled upon an article that talked about the economics of pubs and evaluated their declining numbers. First the page examined some of the key economic issues involving the pub industry and then ended with a question: Should their fate be left to the market, or should the government intervene? I found this discussion very fascinating because I had rarely thought of the world through an economic lens much before, other than in geography case studies (which looking back, I enjoyed the most). The article introduced new themes to me like division of labour through the pin analogy from Adam Smith (Wealth of Nations) and how it can improve productivity. It also touched on topics like economies of scale and oligopolies. It was all so exciting and interesting, I found out there was a whole secret world behind the one I thought I lived in, and I was desperate to learn more.
To advance my knowledge in this subject I decided to find a book to read. After having googled economics books for beginners, I found myself enticed by Freakonomics by Stephen J. Dubner and Steven Levitt. I thoroughly enjoyed it as an introduction to economics because its humorous notes made it very entertaining. The authors also did an excellent job at helping me understand statistical concepts at an intuitive level, and how I could use the concepts to better understand the real-world problems discussed in the book.
After more research into the subject, I found out that not only did economics consist of microeconomics; the branch of economics that considers the behaviour of decision takers within the economy, such as individuals, households and firms, but also macroeconomics; the study of the actions governments and countries take to influence broader economies. So, this was where I decided to research next. At the time, ChatGPT had just been released and I was fascinated to know how this would affect the labour market. As part of my English GCSE coursework, we were assigned to write a speech on a subject of our choosing so long as it was compelling and interesting so then I decided to pick the topic The Economic Impact of AI. (I will upload this speech at a later date with current insights and reflections alongside).
Now I'm a 16-year-old amid my A-Levels; Economics, Maths, Further Maths, Computer Science. I'm getting stuck in and learning a lot.
