Opinion Here’s how to get free Paxlovid as many times as you need it
When the public health emergency around covid-19 ended, vaccines and treatments became commercial products, meaning companies could charge for them as they do other pharmaceuticals. Paxlovid, the highly effective antiviral pill that can prevent covid from becoming severe, now has a list price of nearly $1,400 for a five-day treatment course.
Thanks to an innovative agreement between the Biden administration and the drug’s manufacturer, Pfizer, Americans can still access the medication free or at very low cost through a program called Paxcess. The problem is that too few people — including pharmacists — are aware of it.
I learned of Paxcess only after readers wrote that pharmacies were charging them hundreds of dollars — or even the full list price — to fill their Paxlovid prescription. This shouldn’t be happening. A representative from Pfizer, which runs the program, explained to me that patients on Medicare and Medicaid or who are uninsured should get free Paxlovid. They need to sign up by going to paxlovid.iassist.com or by calling 877-219-7225. “We wanted to make enrollment as easy and as quick as possible,” the representative said.
Indeed, the process is straightforward. I clicked through the web form myself, and there are only three sets of information required. Patients first enter their name, date of birth and address. They then input their prescriber’s name and address and select their insurance type.
All this should take less than five minutes and can be done at home or at the pharmacy. A physician or pharmacist can fill it out on behalf of the patient, too. Importantly, this form does not ask for medical history, proof of a positive coronavirus test, income verification, citizenship status or other potentially sensitive and time-consuming information.
But there is one key requirement people need to be aware of: Patients must have a prescription for Paxlovid to start the enrollment process. It is not possible to pre-enroll. (Though, in a sense, people on Medicare or Medicaid are already pre-enrolled.)
Once the questionnaire is complete, the website generates a voucher within seconds. People can print it or email it themselves, and then they can exchange it for a free course of Paxlovid at most pharmacies.
Pfizer’s representative tells me that more than 57,000 pharmacies are contracted to participate in this program, including major chain drugstores such as CVS and Walgreens and large retail chains such as Walmart, Kroger and Costco. For those unable to go in person, a mail-order option is available, too.
The program works a little differently for patients with commercial insurance. Some insurance plans already cover Paxlovid without a co-pay. Anyone who is told there will be a charge should sign up for Paxcess, which would further bring down their co-pay and might even cover the entire cost.
Several readers have attested that Paxcess’s process was fast and seamless. I was also glad to learn that there is basically no limit to the number of times someone could use it. A person who contracts the coronavirus three times in a year could access Paxlovid free or at low cost each time.
Unfortunately, readers informed me of one major glitch: Though the Paxcess voucher is honored when presented, some pharmacies are not offering the program proactively. As a result, many patients are still being charged high co-pays even if they could have gotten the medication at no cost.
This is incredibly frustrating. However, after interviewing multiple people involved in the process, including representatives of major pharmacy chains and Biden administration officials, I believe everyone is sincere in trying to make things right. As we saw in the early days of the coronavirus vaccine rollout, it’s hard to get a new program off the ground. Policies that look good on paper run into multiple barriers during implementation.
Those involved are actively identifying and addressing these problems. For instance, a Walgreens representative explained to me that in addition to educating pharmacists and pharmacy techs about the program, the company learned it also had to make system changes to account for a different workflow. Normally, when pharmacists process a prescription, they inform patients of the co-pay and dispense the medication. But with Paxlovid, the system needs to stop them if there is a co-pay, so they can prompt patients to sign up for Paxcess.
Here is where patients and consumers must take a proactive role. That might not feel fair; after all, if someone is ill, people expect that the system will work to help them. But that’s not our reality. While pharmacies work to fix their system glitches, patients need to be their own best advocates. That means signing up for Paxcess as soon as they receive a Paxlovid prescription and helping spread the word so that others can get the antiviral at little or no cost, too.

also in regards to that last article about varied ways of thinking about psychosis/altered states that don't just align with medical model or carceral psychiatry---I always love sharing about Bethel House and their practices of peer support for schizophrenia that are founded on something called tojisha kenkyu, but I don't see it mentioned as often as things like HVN and Soteria House.
ID: [A colorful digital drawing of a group of people having a meeting inside a house while it snows outside.]
"What really set the stage for tōjisha-kenkyū were two social movements started by those with disabilities. In the 1950s, a new disability movement was burgeoning in Japan, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that those with physical disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, began to advocate for themselves more actively as tōjisha. For those in this movement, their disability is visible. They know where their discomfort comes from, why they are discriminated against, and in what ways they need society to change. Their movement had a clear sense of purpose: make society accommodate the needs of people with disabilities. Around the same time, during the 1970s, a second movement was started by those with mental health issues, such as addiction (particularly alcohol misuse) and schizophrenia. Their disabilities are not always visible. People in this second movement may not have always known they had a disability and, even after they identify their problems, they may remain uncertain about the nature of their disability. Unlike those with physical and visible disabilities, this second group of tōjisha were not always sure how to advocate for themselves as members of society. They didn’t know what they wanted and needed from society. This knowing required new kinds of self-knowledge.
As the story goes, tōjisha-kenkyū emerged in the Japanese fishing town of Urakawa in southern Hokkaido in the early 2000s. It began in the 1980s when locals who had been diagnosed with psychiatric disorders created a peer-support group in a run-down church, which was renamed ‘Bethel House’. The establishment of Bethel House (or just Bethel) was also aided by the maverick psychiatrist Toshiaki Kawamura and an innovative social worker named Ikuyoshi Mukaiyachi. From the start, Bethel embodied the experimental spirit that followed the ‘antipsychiatry’ movement in Japan, which proposed ideas for how psychiatry might be done differently, without relying only on diagnostic manuals and experts. But finding new methods was incredibly difficult and, in the early days of Bethel, both staff and members often struggled with a recurring problem: how is it possible to get beyond traditional psychiatric treatments when someone is still being tormented by their disabling symptoms? Tōjisha-kenkyū was born directly out of a desperate search for answers.
In the early 2000s, one of Bethel’s members with schizophrenia was struggling to understand who he was and why he acted the way he did. This struggle had become urgent after he had set his own home on fire in a fit of anger. In the aftermath, he was overwhelmed and desperate. At his wits’ end about how to help, Mukaiyachi asked him if perhaps he wanted to kenkyū (to ‘study’ or ‘research’) himself so he could understand his problems and find a better way to cope with his illness. Apparently, the term ‘kenkyū’ had an immediate appeal, and others at Bethel began to adopt it, too – especially those with serious mental health problems who were constantly urged to think about (and apologise) for who they were and how they behaved. Instead of being passive ‘patients’ who felt they needed to keep their heads down and be ashamed for acting differently, they could now become active ‘researchers’ of their own ailments. Tōjisha-kenkyū allowed these people to deny labels such as ‘victim’, ‘patient’ or ‘minority’, and to reclaim their agency.
Tōjisha-kenkyū is based on a simple idea. Humans have long shared their troubles so that others can empathise and offer wisdom about how to solve problems. Yet the experience of mental illness is often accompanied by an absence of collective sharing and problem-solving. Mental health issues are treated like shameful secrets that must be hidden, remain unspoken, and dealt with in private. This creates confused and lonely people, who can only be ‘saved’ by the top-down knowledge of expert psychiatrists. Tōjisha-kenkyū simply encourages people to ‘study’ their own problems, and to investigate patterns and solutions in the writing and testimonies of fellow tōjisha.
Self-reflection is at the heart of this practice. Tōjisha-kenkyū incorporates various forms of reflection developed in clinical methods, such as social skills training and cognitive behavioural therapy, but the reflections of a tōjisha don’t begin and end at the individual. Instead, self-reflection is always shared, becoming a form of knowledge that can be communally reflected upon and improved. At Bethel House, members found it liberating that they could define themselves as ‘producers’ of a new form of knowledge, just like the doctors and scientists who diagnosed and studied them in hospital wards. The experiential knowledge of Bethel members now forms the basis of an open and shared public domain of collective knowledge about mental health, one distributed through books, newspaper articles, documentaries and social media.
Tōjisha-kenkyū quickly caught on, making Bethel House a site of pilgrimage for those seeking alternatives to traditional psychiatry. Eventually, a café was opened, public lectures and events were held, and even merchandise (including T-shirts depicting members’ hallucinations) was sold to help support the project. Bethel won further fame when their ‘Hallucination and Delusion Grand Prix’ was aired on national television in Japan. At these events, people in Urakawa are invited to listen and laugh alongside Bethel members who share stories of their hallucinations and delusions. Afterwards, the audience votes to decide who should win first prize for the most hilarious or moving account. One previous winner told a story about a failed journey into the mountains to ride a UFO and ‘save the world’ (it failed because other Bethel members convinced him he needed a licence to ride a UFO, which he didn’t have). Another winner told a story about living in a public restroom at a train station for four days to respect the orders of an auditory hallucination. Tōjisha-kenkyū received further interest, in and outside Japan, when the American anthropologist Karen Nakamura wrote A Disability of the Soul: An Ethnography of Schizophrenia and Mental Illness in Contemporary Japan (2013), a detailed and moving account of life at Bethel House. "

BENT RIGHT TO YOUR WINDS
summary — visiting your wife at work has become a normal part of your routine, but when she gets particularly handsy one afternoon, you find yourself christening her office whether you like it or not
warning(s) — established relationship, dom/sub dynamics, consensual free use, established safeword (it’s not used), public play, office sex, groping, nipple stimulation, choking, teasing, semi brat!reader, oral fixation, fingers as a gag, thigh riding, spanking, fingering, praise kink, slight degradation, making out, nearly getting caught, alludes to aftercare, wanda in a lab coat deserves a warning, men/minors dni
authors note — happy happy happy birthday to @godhatesgoodgirls !!
kinktober
The day had felt askew since you’d rolled out of bed, something amiss in the routine you’d settled yourself into since moving to the small beach town Wanda had secured a promotion in just seven months prior; when the weather had been warmer and the leaves had been vibrant with hues of green. You bristled at the breeze that swept off the shore the closer you got to central town, able to see the rippling high tides if you craned your neck just slightly to the left and peered through the shrubbery that framed an old ice cream parlor named ‘Sprinkles’, but your gaze was fixed on the large brownstone building that you’d initially sought out, your thoughts spiraling as you considered the misleading appearance. The work that was done inside was prestigious, innovative, a true slice of the future right at the fingertips of those that had access to the futuristic laboratories inside, but the outside fit the quaint white picket fence aesthetic of Westview seamlessly. Had you never been inside before, had you not been married to Wanda who left each morning in a wrinkleless white coat, you’d have thought it was just another Mom and Pop shop for tourists to ogle at, but you weren’t blinded by ignorance – for once you were liberated with knowledge and effortless love.
You smiled softly at Darcy as you stepped inside, finally away from the chill that October had brought with it. The warm nights and blisteringly hot days of September were long behind you, replaced by the unforgiving assault that fall brought upon you and the other residents of Westview. The thick burnt orange and brown flannel around your shoulders did little to keep you warm, but at the very least it provided a sanctuary for your hands to hide away in as you walked the short mile from your two story house to the identifiable brownstone with ‘Romanoff Industries’ pinned to the front. There was a styrofoam jack-o-lantern on the front desk, and a string of harvest leaves behind the counter as well. The touches of decor were soft, delicate, but enough to revive the spirits of those that trekked into work each day; a thoughtful addition that didn’t make the routine of life feel so mindless.
“Wanda’s in her office.” Darcy’s smile was sweet as she nodded her head toward the elevator despite knowing that you preferred to take the stairs. You wouldn’t call her a friend, but she was always a comfortable face to see when you made the journey into town to visit Wanda during her lunch break. Since April when you’d come to help set up the office space despite Wanda keeping her decor minimal and devoid of heavy personal connection, she’d picked up on your habits, and it had become something of a running bet to see how long it would take for you to give into her quiet pestering. You’d yet to take the elevator, and Darcy huffed quietly from behind the desk as you pointedly avoided the silver plaque with glimmering white buttons to instead enter the stairwell, which was decorated with a wooden pumpkin sign hanging from a single clear command strip.
Natasha was definitely the one who had decorated, that much was obvious as you glanced at the decorations hung up within the interior of the stairwell. She was a very business oriented woman, that much you’d come to know since getting acquainted with Wanda’s coworkers and all of their unique relationships, and every story she retold of Natasha’s behavior throughout the day led you to believe that while she maintained a no bullshit attitude, there were soft, fleeting moments of tender care hidden beneath her stoic actions and expressions. She always pushed for Wanda to take a full hour lunch break, even though she preferred to eat as quickly as possible before returning to the lab, and on her birthday, which she hadn’t told anyone about, there had been a present sitting on her desk that was admittedly not very personal, but still touching because it meant that Natasha had remembered reading it on her transfer application. The touches of halloween decor was minimal, and honestly, somewhat laughable, but there was a softer message beneath the taped up scarecrow and the wonkily hung jack-o-lanterns. Even if the holidays were of no relevance to Natasha, who you knew worked every holiday that she could because Wanda was always prattling on about her data being changed during the few days off they received for things like Christmas and Easter, she knew that it mattered to her staff, and she tried her best to put some effort into boosting moral around the office.
When you entered Wanda’s office, the meticulously clean room being just beside the stairwell door, you noticed her lack of presence, which was odd. Wanda was always around when she knew you were coming, not wanting any of her other co-workers to get the chance to report back to Natasha claiming you were snooping through classified files. It had never happened, but the people at her old placement had started that rumor anyways, and Yelena, her boss that had become something of a close friend to you even if you rarely spoke with her grueling work schedule and your lack of genuinely trying, had merely rolled her eyes, but had still been required to scold Wanda for her negligence. Natasha’s hand would be forced the same way if anyone began those rumors again, so Wanda, bless her, had tried to nip them in the butt before they could even truly begin, which brought you right back to your confusion as you looked around the office. The salad she’d made before leaving was sat on her desk, picked through and beginning to wilt, signaling that she’d either forgotten to put the ice pack in her lunch box again despite the pink sticky note you left on the freezer door, or she’d taken lunch early by Natasha’s forcing. You hoped you weren’t interrupting anything important, not aware of your plans being subject to change, but before you could dwell on what she could possibly be doing somewhere misplaced in the large office building, you felt hands wrapping around your body and pulling you backward.
A soft gasp fell off of your lips when the door was kicked closed, and then you realized what was happening. A breathy whine fell off your lips when fingers pinched at your nipples through the thick material of your shirt, the unbuttoned flannel thrown over your shoulders allowing your attacker to feel the way they pebbled without a bra to conceal them. The flash of white as one hand reached up to hold onto your neck had you melting against her chest, somewhat out of breath from the shock that had rattled you initially.
“Wanda.” You sighed softly, head lulling to the side when teeth nipped at your neck before passionate kisses were pressed into your skin and trialed downward toward the collar of your shirt. “Wanda, you’re at work.” You tried again, face growing flush as you stared ahead at the open blinds. If anyone was standing across the street, if they craned their head just the slightest bit upward, they’d undoubtedly be able to make out the silhouette of your body being groped. A whine fell off of your lips when a curious hand pinched at your nipples once more, relishing in the way they hardened beneath harsh pressure.
“Shh, baby. Just let me touch you, I’ll be quick.” She’d have stopped if you really wanted her to. All that you had to do was say a single word, and her hands would be off of you faster than they’d grabbed you to begin with, but the rush of excitement that had your clit pulsating against the seam of your leggings deterred you from making that choice. Wanda clearly knew that her office was safe enough to touch you in this way, and not so secretly, you yearned for the thrill of somebody knocking on the door, forcing the both of you to spring apart and attempt to collect yourself in time for them to not grow concerned beyond the threshold. Another added bonus was the dominance in which she touched you with, leaving nothing up for your consideration, merely taking what she wanted and giving what she wanted you to have. There was something so tantalizing about being at her disposal whenever and however she pleased, and you’d both gone to great lengths to ensure that this element of your sexual relationship was both consensual and comfortable for the both of you, not just her. She wasn’t doing anything that you hadn’t previously agreed to, in fact, you wish she’d do more. You wished her hands would stop toying with the collar of your shirt and wrap around your neck the way that you adored, that her hands would stop fiddling with your nipples overtop of your shirt and seek the price you hid beneath the thick cotton. You wished she’d travel lower, exploit that sensitive nerve between your legs that she knew how to manipulate until you were merely putty in her hands begging for release that she had every right to deny you. You wished she’d stop handling you so softly.
“If we’re going to do this, you need to at least make it worth my while, Maximoff.” You rushed out, eyes closed as pleasure seized your thoughts, pinning you in place as she twisted your nipple sadistically, enjoying the way every muscle in your body tightened before it melted away into bliss that you couldn’t fight. She chuckled darkly against your neck, her hot breath fanning across the shell of your ear.
“Trying to tell me what to do, pretty girl?” She quizzed, pulling you back against her chest with a firm grip around your midsection, her fingers that weren’t taunting your sensitive nipples fiddling with the waistband of your leggings that begged to be slipped down lower until your cunt was exposed to the heat circulating through the spacious office. “When has that ever worked out well for you?”
“Never.” You gritted through clenched teeth, taking in a large breath when the first instance of getting what you wanted from her presented itself, but you were foolish to think she’d cave to your bratting so easily, and just as easily as her fingers slipped beneath the waistband of your leggings to pull at the hem of your delicate panties, they were gone and trailed back up your body until they found a comfortable home against your neck. Her fingers squeezed tightly, and the sudden change in air going to your lungs had your eyes fluttering closed as you slumped against her chest, writhing in pleasurable pain as she again pulled at your taut nipples and chuckled whimsically.
“I applaud your efforts, detka, but you’re not here to make demands.” You gasped when teeth sank into your neck, right above where her thumb rested along the column of your skin, practically burning you with its possessive grip. A deep sense of pleasure rolled through your body when her knee pushed between your legs, her toned thigh sitting around against your clit, further driving the seam of your pants into your intimacy, giving you just an ounce of friction, which you took eagerly, rocking against her clothed thigh as you felt the impression of her pens in the breast pocket of her lab coat digging into you shoulder blade. “So easy, malyshka. Would you let anyone touch you like this? Have you wherever they wanted?” She knows that answer is a firm no, but still she likes to taunt your desperation for her touch, and it only adds to the humiliation that's beginning to pile up on you as you become desperate enough to rock against the thigh between your legs, desperate sounds falling off your lips as you attempt to silence your need. “So noisy, we’re gonna have to do something about that.”
You’re shoved away from her body like merely touching your skin is enough to burn her, and you can’t help but meekly whimper at the loss of contant. It lasts for merely a handful of seconds, her hungry eyes undressing you as you found your footing and steadied yourself. “Pants around your ankles. I don’t have time for you to look at me like a deer in headlights.” She grumbles, already beginning to move around the office and ensure that the blinds are properly drawn as you push down your leggings and fold yourself over the desk in the way that you know she wants. Your ass sticks out just enough for your glistening cunt to be visible, and a sadistic chuckle warms your skin as she sets her eyes on you already dripping for her. “You like when I take advantage of you, baby? When I tell you to come meet me for lunch just so I can play with your cunt?” It all makes sense now, and you can’t help but cry out in surprise when her palm comes down on the globe of your ass and leaves a stinging sensation in its wake. Another hit follows, this time harder and directed at your lower thighs, but there’s not time for you to respond before she’s pushing two fingers into your folds and setting a brutal pace as she works to have you coming undone.
She’d nearly been late to work that morning, too focused on obsessing over you to a degree that should’ve made her plans for the afternoon obvious. She’d asked you a few hundred questions, about how you were doing mentally, how you felt being in Westview now that it wasn’t so new, if you were still getting caught between feelings of sadness and longing in moments that you couldn’t have predicted such a strong overcoming of emotion. You hadn’t thought anything about it until now, but as you gathered the full picture, you can see that she was checking in, ensuring that none of this would affect you in any way other than positively. If her hand wasn’t holding your back firmly against her desk, you would’ve spun around to kiss her, but all that you could do now was whine as her fingers hammered into you, curling upward if only to graze that sensitive spot within your walls minimally. She was toying with you, teasing you, seeing how long she could prolong your pleasure until you begged for her to give you more.
It came quickly, because the overwhelming assault of your love for her only multiplied the pleasure that her fingers were provoking within your core, and the small movements of your hips pushing back against her fingers only gained you so much. “Please! Please! I need more!” You begged, tears blurring in your vision as your moans and whines became too loud, and were quickly silenced by her fingers forcing themselves into your mouth. She pressed down on your tongue cynically, chuckling to herself as you gagged and moaned around her now sodden digits.
She didn’t try to deny you though, working faster, pressing against that sweet spot within you with purpose now, dragging out every ounce of pleasure you allowed her to take, her thumb falling onto your clit as she guided you towards an orgasm that had to be silent, the sounds of footsteps just beyond the office door reminding you of where you are.
“Cum for me, detka. It’s okay, you can let go.” She cooed as she felt your walls begin to squeeze her fingers, fluttering and pulsating with each ounce of pleasure she drew out of you. That was all it took for you to fall apart, her fingers in your mouth silencing the whines and moans that attempted to fall into the air, but became muffled and soft sounding as her digits prevented them from fully forming on your tongue. Your thighs trembled as she withdrew her fingers, your brain a jumbled mess of pleasure and submission as you reached for your pants and worked them up your legs.
You smiled softly as she turned you around in her arms, laying a kiss to your lips that was soft and tender like she always was. “Did you eat?” She checked in, no longer radiating dominance that had your mind whirling with pleasurable incoherence, and just barely did you manage to nod your head before the door swung upon and one of her colleges that you’d heard about stood in the doorway with a beam of pride on her lips, entirely unaware of what she’d almost barged in on.
“We made a development! Like, a big development!” Kate rambled with excitement, taking off down the hallway and back toward the lab before Wanda even had a chance to reply.
You batted at the woman's chest, your hand landing right against her breast pocket where three black pens were meticulously pinned, your cheeks flush in mortification. “You didn’t lock the door?!”
“Whoops?” She grinned bashfully, stealing one last kiss before she was racing out of the office and in the direction that Kate had fled to. “I’ll see you at home, baby! Love you!”

So Many Stars
An Oral History of Trans, Nonbinary, Genderqueer, and Two-Spirit People of Color
Caro de Robertis
From the acclaimed novelist, a first-of-its-kind, deeply personal, and moving oral history of a generation of trans and gender nonconforming elders of color--from leading activists to artists to ordinary citizens--who tell their own stories of breathtaking courage, cultural innovations, and acts of resistance.
So Many Stars knits together the voices of trans, nonbinary, genderqueer, and two-spirit elders of color as they share authentic, intimate accounts of how they created space for themselves and their communities in the world. This singular project collects the testimonies of twenty elders, each a glimmering thread in a luminous tapestry, preserving their words for future generations--who can more fully exist in the world today because of these very trailblazers.
De Robertis creates a collective coming-of-age story based on hundreds of hours of interviews, offering rare snapshots of ordinary life: kids growing up, navigating family issues and finding community, coming out and changing how they identify over the years, building movements and weathering the AIDS crisis, and sharing wisdom for future generations. Often narrating experiences that took place before they had the array of language that exists today to self-identify beyond the gender binary, this generation lived through remarkable changes in American culture, shaped American culture, and yet rarely takes center stage in the history books. Their stories feel particularly urgent in the current political moment, but also remind readers that their experiences are not new, and that young trans and nonbinary people today belong to a long lineage.
The anecdotes in these pages are riveting, joyful, heartbreaking, full of personality and wisdom, and artfully woven together into one immersive narrative. In De Robertis's words, So Many Stars shares "behind-the-scenes tales of what it meant--and still means--to create an authentic life, against the odds."

your beauty never scared me
spencer reid x fem!bau!reader
you’re scared no one will ever love and understand you, but spencer always has.
word count: 2.2k
warnings: a bit of unrequited love, comfort/angst/fluff, negative self thought, spencer is always a sweetheart, reader has a darker aesthetic
Maybe it was the fact that you came from a broken family from a young age. No, you didn't have a bad childhood, but it wasn't ideal for a young girl growing up.
It could have been the bad high school relationships, full of boys who didn't understand how to treat a young woman. Stuck at their stupid baseball games or waiting for them to finish their video game, sitting alone on their bed waiting for them to finish.
The most likely cause for your fear of love was simply the fear that no one would ever truly understand you, and therefore, never be able to love you right.
If you looked deeper, though, much further past the surface level, deep into the core, you would've realized that Spencer Reid had been there all along.
When you first joined the BAU, Spencer Reid was a typical little nerd, the glasses he wore even fulfilling the stereotype. His rambles about anything and everything were endearing, and lead you to begin your friendship with the man after he told you the history of your favorite movies.
"...its distinctive style with his signature blend of dark humor and whimsy. His imaginative vision, influenced by German Expressionism, is evident in the film’s surreal sets and exaggerated character designs. Burton’s decision to cast Michael Keaton as the chaotic title character and his encouragement of Keaton’s improvisation contributed to the film’s memorable, unpredictable energy. The innovative special effects and makeup, along with the creative set design by Bo Welch, further showcased Burton's unique approach."
By the end of his rant, Spencer had expected you to have been completely focused on anything else, but your eyes were trained on him, a small sparkle flickering in them.
"Spence, how do you know do much about Beetlejuice? You haven't even seen it before." you'd chuckled.
"I think Tim Burton is an interesting director. Maybe we could, uh, see it together sometime? If you want, of course." Spencer awkwardly fiddled with his fingers, the suggestion of the two of you hanging out outside of the work settle rattling his nerves.
You had given him a big smile, beneath your dark clothes and makeup was a heart of white and gold, a truly captivating soul. "I'd love to, Spencer! I own it, so you can come over whenever."
"Whenever sounds good," Spencer paused, thinking about what he had just said. "I mean, Thursday?"
"Thursday it is, boy genius." That name was usually reserved for making fun of Spencer, but the way you said it actually made his heart flutter.
Spencer would've never guessed that the girl, clad in dark clothing, the complete opposite of his own aesthetic, would be interested in hanging out with him. Then, it happened. And it happened again, and again, until you became friends.
Your friendship with the doctor grew. As you got closer, Spencer began to identify your fears and your tells. You played with your hair when you were nervous, bit the skin of your fingernails when you were anxious, tapped your foot or bounced your leg when you were impatient. He began to understand you on a deeper level.
It began to be the same for you. You knew his likes, dislikes, fears and worries. You understood his struggles with his mother and father, how sometimes this job didn't feel like enough until he made a true difference in someone's life.
Spencer Reid and you had connected in nearly a cosmic level, and that began to scare you.
It was two and a half years after Spencer had met you when he realized he had been falling in love with you for nearly a year. His small crush had grown exponentially. After Haley Hotchner's death, you'd taken in Jack for several days while Hotch planned the funeral and began to clean the house from the murders. Jack had taken to you quickly; he'd gone as far as to call you his favorite aunt.
Seeing the level of compassion and helpfulness you had displayed for Hotch made Spencer begin to realize that your friendship was beginning to move to the next level for him.
He began to think of you night and day, wondering what you were doing, how you were doing, what your plans were. He wanted to be with you, to feel your skin, linger in your existence. It wasn't until JJ had explained to him that that feeling he felt was love that he began to understand that you were in no place for him to admit his feelings.
Spencer never meant to profile anyone unless he was working, but he found it hard to not with you. He noticed your lack of dating, how even when you had the chance, you evaded it. He noticed your disdain to the notion of true love, or love at first sight, or even soulmates. It didn't take him long to piece together that it wasn't a hatred of love, no, it was a fear of it. However, he could never understand the why of the fear.
Now, you and Spencer had met five years ago. You'd both physically changed in looks over the time, but your friendship only remained and grew passionately stronger.
After the death of Emily, and finding out she didn't really die, Spencer had you as his rock. You grieved together, to the point that for three weeks, you lived with Spencer in his apartment. After you'd left, Spencer realized that he couldn't live without you anymore.
Spencer and you sat on his couch, the cold September month made you crave an early Halloween movie. So, Spencer put on his own copy of Beetlejuice he bought a few years back. The soft glow of the lamp cast warm shadows across the room, and the faint scent of popcorn lingered in the air. You could hear the distant hum of the city outside, blending with the soft rustling of the movie’s soundtrack.
"I like Adam and Barbara," Spencer hummed as he watched the screen. "They make a really good couple."
You nodded, "I guess they do,"
Spencer's brows furrowed at your words. "You don't sound convinced."
"I don't know," You shrugged, sitting up and crossing your legs. "He's sort of controlling over her. It's just too much, she's a strong woman."
"You mean he's protective over her in the afterlife filled with dead people they didn't even knew existed?" Spencer raised a brow, turning to you. "I'm pretty sure that's relatively normal."
Turning your attention back to the screen, you replied, "I guess so,"
Spencer sighed, finally deciding to ask you the question he'd been avoiding for too many years now. "Why are you so scared of love?"
His question made you turn back to him, a confused look on your face. "What?"
"You're so pessimistic about it. You always avoid dating, talking about it, anything to even do with love." Spencer explained. "I'm just curious, why?"
"Because, there is no way love that strong exists." You concluded, folding your arms over your chest. "That's why it's all in the movies. It's fake for a reason."
Spencer nearly chuckled at your words, finding himself in disbelief. Sure, he didn't really believe in soulmates, but he definitely believed in love. "Sure love exists," Spencer said. "True love has to come from somewhere to be spoken about. It's why its so deeply rooted into art and literature. Plus, with the psychological evidence of--"
"Okay, okay," You put your hands up in mock surrender. "I believe you, Spence." You'd never cut off one of his rants before.
"This bothers you," Spencer noted, his arms mocking your previous stance as they folded over his chest. "Why does this bother you so much, what aren't you telling me?"
You let out a huff of air in reply, your defences kicking into full gear. "Why do you care so much?"
Spencer stuttered over his words, “Uh- because it clearly affects you! It’s not hard to notice your dislike of it, and I want to know.” Spencer defended. He could see it in your eyes, though. You were too good of a profiler to not know he was lying through his teeth.
“The real reason?” You sharply replied, hating that Spencer was lying.
“Because I’m in love with you,” Spencer’s voice was filled with desperation. “Here you are, constantly belittling the idea of love when that’s all I want to give to you, and I don’t understand why.”
His words cut you like a knife. You hadn’t expected him to say that, let alone feel it. It almost made you feel guilty. “No one has ever understood me, Spencer. I don’t want to settle for just anyone who will pretend for their whole life that they know me when deep down they will never be able to understand who I am, what I need.”
“You think I don’t?” Spencer challenged. He tried not to feel offended at your words, truly. Yet they hit him like a slap to the face. He felt like he understood you.
“Okay, prove it then.”
Spencer was ready for this, “Your least favorite cases involve those with divorced parents. Not because of the affect on their children, but the affect it takes on them. You hate to see when it hurts one of them, or both.” Spencer’s first claim was true, and it caught you off guard. “You hate anything with a pumpkin scent, however, you enjoy real pumpkins because of their look rather than their scent. You bite your lip, tap your foot, shake your leg, all when you feel negatively.”
“Anyone could profile that,” You weakly replied, feeling thrown off at Spencer’s careful acknowledgment of your little tells.
“Are you afraid of love because no one will ever understand you, or because you’re scared you’ll never find someone who will.” Spencer finished. He watched as your mouth opened and closed, the words not quite making it out. “I see you, I hear you. My favorite thing is when you tell me things about yourself, your day, your feelings. Any day without you is a bad day and any day with you is a good one.”
Spencer’s words left your heart beating faster in your chest as you began to realize this is what you were looking for all along, but your own fear that you would never find it blind sighted you to the truth. The truth that Spencer Walter Reid was in love with you.
Spencer often recalled his own struggles with relationships, remembering the long hours he spent studying while his peers socialized. With him being so much younger, he had no way to truly connect with them. The sense of isolation he felt growing up made him cherish the connections he built later in life, driving him to seek genuine understanding and affection. On the other hand, your own problems with family and bad relationships drove you to hold a near-resentful feeling to love. It made you feel like it was something you could never have. That was something Spencer was beginning to see from your perspective.
"Please," Spencer's voice was softer, more vulnerable as his eyes pleaded with you. "say something."
"I'm sorry," you breathed. For a moment, Spencer thought you were about to reject him, until he saw the glistening tears form in your eyes. "I-I should've known sooner."
Spencer nearly chuckled, "I didn't want to make it too obvious."
"Spencer?" you asked.
"Yeah?" he replied.
"Why do you love me?"
Your question made his heart nearly crack at the raw fragility your tone held. All he wanted to do was to take you into his arms and sing you sweet nothings until you believed him, but right now that wasn't an option. "I love you because you're unapologetically you," Spencer's reply made you finally lock eyes with him. "You're so sweet and kind, you never try to hide the things you like and dislike. You're so bold and brave. You make me feel so alive, so wanted. Every moment with you is a reminder of how extraordinary it is to be around someone who radiates such genuine warmth and enthusiasm."
"You really love me?" Your voice felt meek in comparison to how your normal assertiveness and bravato sounded. Your heart felt three times bigger in your chest as a tear dared to slip down your cheek.
Before it could even leave your eye, Spencer brought his sleeve over his hand and soaked it up gently with the cuff. "I love you with every part of me."
"I think I want to love you, too." you admitted. It felt hard to say those words, to finally give into your darkest, most vulnerable desire of unwavering love.
"Even with your fears, you're beautiful." Spencer softly reached to graze your cheek. "This, your fears, nothing could ever scare me. I'll teach you to let me love you if I need to."
"That better be a promise," you slightly chuckled, holding your pinky out to the man.
Spencer smiled, locking his pinky with your own, "It's a promise."
As you held Spencer’s pinky in your own, a sense of peace settled over you. The weight of your fears began to lift, replaced by a tentative hope. "Maybe love isn’t as impossible for me as I thought," You whispered, reaching out to hold his hand. Spencer’s smile was both a promise and a comfort, signaling the beginning of a new chapter in your lives.

everyone has their own inner well of creativity and inspiration. being ur own source of motivation and inspiration takes others off of the pedestal and puts u on it instead…💬🎀
IDENTIFY UR PASSIONS ;
through identifying what things ur passionate about, ur tapping into what lights ur soul on fire. start passion projects. a passion project is exactly what it sounds like and its an amazing way to use ur own creativity and also serves as something to go back to when ur longing for that inspiration again.
its important that when u have passions and interests that u explore them and foster them. fostering what ur passionate about and practicing it makes u more comfortable and oftentimes when we are more comfortable in something we are open to doing greater things cuz were not constantly psyching ourselves out.
SELF EXPRESSION ;
self expression is so so important because when u express urself honestly and authentically, u uncover passions and ur values and so many other things as well. when u express urself its not only good for ur soul but u can express urself through so many different outlets.
u can express urself through things like art, poetry, song writing, makeup, and even just speaking. its a healthy way to release pent up emotion and passion into a beautiful piece. not only that but self expression fosters creativity and innovative thinking, so its a wonderful way to spark inspiration from within urself.
EXPERIMENT WITH YOURSELF ;
try out new things with urself and ur appearance. whether thats trying out different makeup looks, style, etc. experiment until u figure out what makes you YOU. if u already know ur own style and the things that make u uniquely individual, still experiment with ur look because thats what u do with a muse. the definition of muse is
a person or personified force who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist.
so be ur own creative artist and look towards urself for inspiration. another way to look for and foster inspiration is through pinterest. i have so many boards on pinterest for things that i use as inspiration not only for the songs i write but for my posts as well.
BE OBSESSED WITH URSELF ;

paid chart readings on sale! dm for the prices!
♅ aquarius ascendant people are seen as innovative and trend-setters. it's a stereotype, but it's definitely something that occurs. even if there might've been people who have done it before, zendaya is someone who popularised dressing similar to the movie's theme when it was time for PR and premieres. gabriette is also someone who popularised a specific make-up style, and with saint laurent...i don't need to say anything as we know of his influence. aquarius being in the first house also means that people usually think they stand out, like a coloured image between those that are black and white.
♱ they could likely identify themselves as people who really want to be set apart to those around them, and it's valid. they are people who make quiet noise, whatever they do or say is caught onto and people want to follow it, and this could sometimes make them annoyed due to the fact that they are likely people who APPRECIATE being different than the crowd they're around.
♅ this house placement shows the impression they make on other people is pure inspiration. as i have said in the first paragraph, they're people who are trend-setters and because of this, it pushes people to attempt to find themselves, and it could also indicate them having much copy-cats, or people who try and associate themselves with said aquarius ascendants. like whenever there is someone who is a look-alike to zendaya, they make sure everyone knows that.
♱ due to their "out of the box" behaviour, people usually tend to think people with aquarius in the firs thouse are funny people. seeing and pointing out things people didnt notice with humour, or being the one who points out things people are afraid to. on the other hand, their need to be unique/different all the time can sometimes make them do a turn of actually being a basic becky.
♅ by using modern astrology, uranus is the planetary ruler of the first house. and this means people usually are surprised somehow whenever they see them for the first time, whether it be their appearance, what they say and how they interact with other people dozens of individuals catch onto. this planetary ruler can either make them people who are very aloof or friendly, they're people who like to observe, and because of this they can be very judgemental, but they do it to protect themselves.
♱ when it comes to features, as i have mentioned prior, aquarius ascendants do stand out, and sometimes they do have that alien OR other-worldly look that makes people always want to take a second look at them when they walk by them outside. when i look at aquarius ascendants, similar to jupiter/sag. there's usually something exaggerated about them, whether it be breast size, ass, height or thighs, eyes or mouth, something sticks out and it compliments them well and makes them look more different to people around them.
♅ when it comes to their persona ambition, aquarius ascendants really do want to set themselves completely differently to other people. and it doesnt always have to be success and accomplishing goals, sometimes these people really do like to be left alone, but there's another scale of them that like to build a comfortable community for themselves and the people they care about.
♱ their strengths are weaknesses involve them being people who know how to build a strong foundation for themselves and their loved ones, being friendly and intelligent. aquarius ascendants tend to be very intuitive people, but what they could struggle with is actually believing in what their gut wants them to be revealed to. sometimes their pride and adamance can get in the way of many things and it could hold them back.
♅ thus due to their stubborness, they might sometimes project their personalities of being people who always know what is the proper right and wrong. some people could get annoyed with them being people who have a high horse, and not even being people who follow rules and orders they give to other people. on the other hand, sometimes their personalities could be projected into traits of people who think they can save everything and everyone, saviour complex.
♱ moving on to how they might see the world. similar to leo ascendants, aquarius ascendants might see the world as something they have to conquer, whether it be about understanding them and the dynamics of other people around them. sometimes aquarius ascendant could feel like they're an outsider looking in
♅ as stereotypically said, it is perceived that most aquarius ascendants might deem themselves to be better than the people around them, and it's not necessarily a surprising thing. as aquarius is the humanitarian side, sometimes this unintentionally makes them people who judge the miscondunct or simple human behaviours and comparing said people to themselves and how they'll never be like them. as aquarius is the second to last sign of the zodiac, perceive it in a way of aquarius ascendants unintentionally perceiving themselves as people who are almost the completion of perfection, on the other hand, there's the aquarius ascendant who have the self-image of them being people who want to help others and themselves, but aquarius is ruled by the planet of uranus, the planet of the extreme, so usually they have the most extreme views of themselves, negative or positive.
♱ lastly, when it comes to how they impact other people. people are either in competition with them or at awe. aquarius ascendants need for being innovative and independent gives answers to people who are wondering what they should do with their lives. though, it could also manifest in them being challenged in ways aquarius ascendants play devil's advocate to people's philosophies.

UTKU ERDEM OZER (3)

Welcome to our comprehensive guide on the latest advancements in orthopedic services available at Utku Erdem Ozer's clinic. At the forefront of innovative treatment options, we specialize in addressing common yet complex musculoskeletal issues, including injuries related to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and hip labrum tears. Our expert team is dedicated to providing personalized care tailored to meet your unique needs, whether you're facing a sports injury or considering hip replacement surgery.
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)
The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is a critical structure in the knee that helps stabilize the joint during movements, particularly in sports. Injuries to the ACL can be debilitating, often requiring thorough evaluation and treatment to restore function and reduce pain.
Understanding the symptoms and treatment options for an ACL injury is paramount. Common signs include:
Sudden pain and swelling in the knee
A popping sound at the time of injury
Instability during activities, especially when pivoting or cutting
When it comes to treatment, options may vary based on the severity of the injury. For minor injuries, physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises can lead to recovery. However, more severe cases may require surgical intervention to reconstruct the ACL. This procedure often involves using grafts from the patient or a donor to replace the damaged ligament.
With advancements in surgical techniques and rehabilitation protocols, many patients experience a successful return to their pre-injury activities, including sports. It is essential to consult with a specialist to develop a personalized treatment plan that best suits your needs.
Don't let an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury hold you back. Seek professional advice and explore your options today to get back on track!
Hip Labrum Tear
A hip labrum tear is a common injury that can result from repetitive motions or traumatic incidents. This focused damage affects the fibrocartilage structure that surrounds the hip joint, leading to pain and reduced range of motion. If you are experiencing discomfort in your hip, particularly during activities such as walking, running, or twisting, it may be a sign of a hip labrum tear.
Symptoms often include a persistent ache in the hip or groin area, stiffness, and a sensation of catching or locking in the joint. These can significantly hinder daily activities and overall quality of life. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to preventing further joint damage. Specialists recommend various treatment options ranging from physical therapy to hip replacement surgery, depending on the severity of the tear.
At our facility, we prioritize a comprehensive approach to your recovery. Our experienced team utilizes cutting-edge diagnostic tools to accurately identify the injury and tailor a treatment plan specific to your needs. We understand that every patient is unique, and we are dedicated to providing individualized care.
If you're seeking relief from hip labrum tear or exploring how anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) issues may impact your recovery, don’t hesitate to contact us. Our commitment to your health ensures you receive the best possible outcome. Take the first step toward improved mobility and comfort today.
Hip Replacement Surgery
When it comes to addressing chronic hip pain or serious injuries, hip replacement surgery stands out as a transformative option. This procedure is designed to eliminate pain and restore mobility, significantly enhancing the quality of life for patients suffering from conditions such as osteoarthritis or severe hip labrum tears.
With advancements in medical technology, hip replacement surgeries have evolved, providing patients with options such as minimally invasive techniques. These approaches not only reduce recovery times but also lead to less scarring and a quicker return to daily activities, ensuring that you can get back on your feet sooner.
Furthermore, the materials used in hip prosthetics have seen remarkable improvements, offering superior durability and compatibility with the human body. This means that patients can expect longer-lasting results and a significantly reduced risk of complications, allowing for a more active lifestyle post-surgery.
Choosing to undergo hip replacement surgery is a significant decision, but when performed by experienced professionals, the results can be life-changing. If you’re considering this procedure, don’t hesitate to seek more information and discuss your options with a qualified healthcare provider.

One-Sided Competition 💴

Catching someone’s stare from across a crowded room was typically romantic. A sign of some sort of affection, that out of everyone, they were choosing to put their focus on you.
However, the look in Ruggie’s eyes was anything but.
You searched your mind for anything you could have possibly done to upset the boy. When you couldn’t identify anything, you shrugged it off and bit into your sub.
The cafeteria ghosts had given it to you after you had struck a deal. You helped them unload and package food and they would give you a little extra during lunch. In hindsight, it probably wasn’t the most balanced deal, but you would take whatever was given to you. And these sandwiches were quite delicious, so it was all worth it.
Ruggie had been having the worst month of his life.
It was normal for him to be spending his free-time taking up random jobs around campus for a little extra cash. However, in the last month, it seemed like the amount of opportunities dwindled.
It had first started when he went to Sam’s Shop. Sam had gladly accepted him when he asked for a side gig. Yet, he rarely if ever got a call. If he ever worked it was only for a few hours at a time and sporadic at best. The employee discount was barely worth it.
Annoyed at his lack of hours, Ruggie had paid Sam a visit. It was a Sunday afternoon, one of the busiest days of the week. Everyone tended to gravitate towards the shop on that day, gathering last minute supplies for a project, buying groceries for the week, and everything of the sort. To his surprise, there was no packed shop like there typically was.
Meandering his way in, he was even more shocked to see the store almost empty. A customer walked past him as he peeked at the cashier, expecting it to be Sam, but it was you.
You greeted the next customer in line with a smile, making small talk, and sending them on their way in record time. Ruggie could only silently stare.
So this was the thing taking away all his hours.
“What can I get for you for you, Little Imp?” Ruggie almost jumped as Sam appeared behind him.
Sam didn’t like loiterers, so hesitantly, Ruggie bought the cheapest thing he could find and made his way over to you.
And damn. As much as he hated to admit it. You were good.
Though, that was okay. He had other opportunities.
Azul had never failed to set Ruggie up with work. They worked quite well together after all.
But, whenever he was called in to work, you were always there.
It was almost like a switch flipped after Azul’s overblot. Going from enemies to employer and employee without any pause.
Perhaps that was why Azul kept you around, with a handful of overblots underneath your belt, you knew how to navigate difficult situations and be innovative when dealing with rude customers.
Whether it be a busy evening or a slow weekday. You never failed to be in a Octavinelle uniform, serving and taking orders with a smile. He started to dislike that bright smile of yours.
The students of NCR were very stingy when it came to giving tips. Whether it was because the students did not have enough money to hand over any tips or they simply were asses, it was overall rare for him to get a thaumarks that weren't from the paycheck that Azul gave him. His reputation didn't do him any favors.
But even so, it seemed like you never left a shift without a few extra thaumarks in your pockets from patrons that took a liking to you.
Azul, being the shrewd businessman he was, took notice of your success in the waitering area of your expertise.
Ruggie couldn't call Azul out due to his lack of evidence (and he couldn't afford to lose the gig), but he swore that the housewarden favored you in some sort of way. Furthermore, the two morays tended to flock towards you one way or another.
It had hit Ruggie early on that you had somehow managed to have a emptier schedule than him. He still had spelldrive practice and errands for Leona to deal with, yet it seemed you were freer than a bird after classes ended for the day.
Well. That was fine. There were other opportunities outside NRC.
Ruggie didn’t make a habit of searching for work outside of the school ground, there was typically nothing available, but when push comes to shove!
Craneport wasn't as popular and bustling as it used to be, but there had to be at least one opening for him, however infrequent it may be. Anything would be good!
A cargo ship was pulled up to one of the docks. He could see a few workers coming and going, picking up and moving creates. He could feel a grin growing on his face at his luck. Ruggie wasn't exactly the most physically strong, but he was almost positive that they would take a spry student like him (that they could pay a little less), over any older guy.
As he took a step toward the ship, another person emerged, carrying a wooden crate almost twice their size.
Ruggie felt his composure snap.
YOU WERE HERE TOO?
The crate was placed down with a 'SLAM'. You huffed and wiped your forehead with the sleeve of your forearm. You looked up, observing your surroundings, you thought you had felt someone looking at you.
Must have been your imagination.
Ruggie stomped back to the bus stop, fishing around his pocket for some loose change.
In the time it took him to make his way to the stop, he had already made up his mind.
If it was going to be like that, so be it. He was not unfamiliar with competition. This meant war.
⋆
So back to present day, there he was, making this one-sided war known, by staring daggers into the back of your head as you, blissfully unaware, ate your lunch.
He fully intended on winning.
TLDR: Two poor people compete against each other rather than the system that put them there. sigh… /j
Note: This is my first time writing Ruggie like ever. But practice makes perfect!

Writing Notes: Cliché
A cliché is an expression that was once innovative but has lost its novelty due to overuse.
Tips on How to Avoid Clichés in Writing
Clichés play such a big role in how we communicate that it may seem impossible to avoid using them in your writing. However, clichés can often be rephrased to convey the same meaning as the original expression. Here are some steps to take if you find clichés in your work:
Think about the meaning of the cliché. Use a dictionary to identify synonyms that could replace the word or phrase that is cliché.
Decide whether or not you need to include the cliché. Often, clichés are unnecessary placeholders in writing and can be deleted.
Rewrite the sentence with new words in place of the cliché. For example, if you’re describing a musical with the cliché “comes full circle,” the description could be changed to say that the musical “returned to the themes with which it started.”
Common Clichés to Avoid
There are a number of clichés that are so overused that they should be avoided like the plague (including that one). Here is a list of clichés you should avoid.
“The wrong side of the bed.”
“Think outside the box.”
“Loose canon.”
“A perfect storm.”
“Can of worms.”
“What goes around comes around.”
“Dead as a doornail.”
“Plenty of fish in the sea.”
“Ignorance is bliss.”
“Like a kid in a candy store.”
“You can’t judge a book by its cover.”
“Take the tiger by the tail.”
“Every rose has its thorn.”
“Good things come to those who wait.”
“In the nick of time.”
“If only walls could talk.”
“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”
“The pot calling the kettle black.”
“The grass is always greener on the other side.”
“Beating a dead horse.”
Example: “As red as a rose” —a universal descriptor for the color red that is now commonplace and unoriginal.
Other examples of clichés include demarcations of time, such as “in the nick of time” and “at the speed of light.”
Clichés also include expressions about emotions, such as “head over heels” to describe love, and the phrase “every cloud has a silver lining” to express hope in difficult situations.
The word “cliché” comes from French.
It was first used to describe a stereotype: a metal plate used for printing an image.
Both the words “cliché” and “stereotype” derive from printing jargon but now have negative connotations.
Why You Should Avoid Clichés in Writing
Overused clichés can show a lack of original thought, and can make a writer appear unimaginative and lazy.
Clichés are often specific to language and cultures and may be a communication barrier to international readers.
Some old clichés have been repeated for so many years that the original reference is archaic and irrelevant.
When it’s OK to Use Clichés in Writing
There are a few instances in which the use of a cliché as a literary device is acceptable, but clichés should always be chosen wisely. Here are some examples of admissible usage:
To sync with a readership. Clichés of idiomatic phrases and slang words can work for specific audiences. If you’re writing for a baby boomer audience, the cliché “back in the day” would make sense. By contrast, millennial readers would be familiar with the cliché “the struggle is real.”
To simplify. Clichés can be used to explain beginning level concepts. For example, a how-to guide for expectant mothers might use the phrase “Remember, you’re eating for two!”
For characterization. Writers might have a character use clichés to demonstrate that they are not an original thinker.
A thought-terminating cliché is a phrase that offers a reductive answer to a complex idea.
The term was popularized in the 1961 book Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism: A Study of ‘Brainwashing’ in China by physiatrist Robert Jay Lifton.
They are also known as semantic stop signs or thought-stoppers.
Here are some examples of thought-terminating clichés:
“To each his own.”
“You win some, you lose some.”
“I’ll cross the bridge when I get there.”
“Take it or leave it.”
