thinking about the mlp episode where cheese sandwich loses his laugh and pinkie cheers him up and helps him regain his lifes purpose, and he realizes that he didint want to spend all his time in a factory making gags, he wanted to actually go out and use those gags and actively see the joy his creations bring to others

and i cant help but think about that in a fandom space, how i kind of thought i might be selfish for wanting comments on my things and then i realized that the reason its so demotivating when you dont get those things and why so many people give up creating is because...

well isint there a huge difference between coming up with jokes and actually using those jokes?

a joke is a form of communication, and i think thats kind of obvious but we often forget that so is art and writing, most art forms even are a form of communication... so what do you feel like when you tell a joke and everyone ignores you?

if you get a laugh though, youre happy and your joke feels sucessful

its not a transaction or something, its just...readers and viewers are having a conversation with the person who created what they made

maybe i should do a video discussing the different ways of viewing the problem and such sometime, but like, its just interesting to me because its also why so many authors get so devestated when they find out other people are talking in private about their stories but not including them in any of them.

like man it WOULD suck if you told a joke, everyone ignored you, then later when you cant hear them theyre like man that joke was the funniest joke i ever heard! and YEAH! so and so is so funny!

like yeesh. that would really, REALLY suck. of course that is something that can be true at the same time its also true that its very important not to lose yourself in that and to find a reason to enjoy it if only for your own sake, focusing more on enjoying your own jokes and making yourself laugh is pretty much the only way to not lose your will to make jokes. (feel free to swap in your creative hobby of choice)

even if writing or drawing is something you love and you want to share that love with others, you have to conciously remember why you love it, and do things that are self indulgent as much as you can instead of worrying about pleasing others

trust me when i say its a lot more pleasant to write a story just to make yourself happy than it is to write something you know will make the algorythm or your followers pay attention to you

and if you can find something that hits a nice middle ground thats pretty epic :)

yes this does apply to any creatives, including translators who i know a lot of you guys specifically have been really struggling with not getting appreciation, i love you guys and appreciate you, the same to artists, writers, indie game devs, small youtubers, and so many more, i hope we can all find a happy place between sharing happiness with others and sharing happiness to ourselves, it still has value, and its still something worth making and i hope you wont forget that

Big Waves' Character Moodboards

A long time ago, I stumbled upon a Pinterest challenge that pretty much was to search a character name + "core" (Pretty much like the aesthetic names everyone uses nowadays) and assemble a small moodboard with the results. So I've decided to do these with Big Waves.

Keep in mind these images are 2-3 years old, so the Pinterest results have changed greatly since then. Out of pure curiosity I've decided to experiment and re-do these boards with the up to date view I have of these characters, so feel free to compare results. Though I can testify that algorithm had gone downhill, because in more than one occassion I got a duplicate result :/

Quincycore

It doesn't matter if its 2023 or 2025, all the results I get will always be based on cottagecore or something soft. I don't mind Quincy being soft sometimes, but I do prefer him being more "grunge", if you get what I mean.

Also as I was researching, I stumbled upon this random picture of an anime character (I think it's from Bleach) and... Please don't tell me I'm the only one who thinks they look similar to Quin 😭

Jeancore

For some reason as I was doing the new version, at some point the Pinterest algorythm went "fuck you" and started to put EVERYTHING, from dumb comics to incredibly unrelated stuff. Still managed to find good material with enough luck.

I like the vibe of both moodboards overall, and I'm glad it didn't deviate much.

Brucecore

My only two notes for the 2nd version is that 1- This time around there was so little to actually work with, it's so dissappointing compared to when I was searching years ago 2- Yes, the beer cans are neccesary to this, I can explain (????)

...Gotta be sincere, the first version wins this round.

Shinecore

My biggest pet peeve with the 2025 version is that apparently "shinecore" got coined as an actual aesthetic (Or something), because every single image I found was mostly a cute thing with a vintage-like filter and covered with sparkles. I miss the diversity of the 2023 results :(

Nonetheless, I'm happy I've still managed to get something that fits Shine more. The pastel colors are cute, yes, but it's a color scheme that goes better with Reef. Speaking of him...

Reefcore

Another case where the older version wins. I feel like the 2025 results featured a lot of marine things (Which makes sense), but very little of other things or even anything that reminded on how I picture Reef. Plus I like the colors better on the 1st ver.

I'm a big nerd, and I'm into many many fandoms, but mostly as someone who just watches the stuff. I've only recently started to try to learn and use social media for something more than just scrolling, so please bear with my if I struggle with anything like proper interractions and algorythms.

As for the most prevalent fandoms in my life...That's gonna be a long one.

I like anime. LOTS of anime, newer and older. I also like games, such as: Baldur's Gate III, Cult of The Lamb, Undertale/Deltarune, Skyrim, Minecraft, Subnautica, The Forest, Overwatch, Marvel Rivals, Palworld, Mass Effect, Portal 1/2, Cyberpunk 2077.... Ok there IS more but I can't think of any in the monent. I read lots of manhwa both het and bl, once again, as with anime, too many to count. Love chinese bl novels (tian guan ci fu or heavenly officials blessing) and others by that same author. And of course I love tv series such as Supernatural, American Horror Story, Lucifer, Lie to me, Hannibal, Dr.House, Bones, Castle and a few others I can't remember the names of. And I love cartoons, The Owl House, Steven Universe, Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss, Avatar the Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra...ok I know there are a few more. It'll come to me eventually...

So far that's that, I'll update this post if need be, and I hope you enjoy your stay if you do decide to stick around.

With all the respect for your philosophy of not supporting solo H, I am wondering what things are you excited about with upcoming HS4 era that much that you are following those hype accounts (or at least your X algorythm knows you’re intrested)? Please don’t take my ask negatively, I am genuinely curious what makes you excited about H’s new era if it’s not his music and tour? While I totally understand your reasons why you’re not a solo stan, I can’t help myself because H’s music brings me joy the same as his shows whenever I attended them in person or at least during the livestream. But besides that I am a very aesthetic person (that’s the libra in me haha) and I know whatever aesthetics HS4 will bring, it will be strong and memorable and same goes with his promo and photoshoots outfits and it will be a matter of few months until the fast-fashion brands will hop on the trend train and copy pieces H wore.

I take no offence to your ask, it's a valid question! I follow the hype accounts because i'm nosy and i like knowing things before everyone else. Like knowing Zayn was going on tour two months before he annouced it. So i don't just follow the hype accounts for H.

Also, i love Harry! I just don't love HS tm or how he got to be HS tm. So what i am looking forward to is basically lots of new content, new discussions, new information, new songs, new fic inspiration and hopefully new gay stuff and gay lyrics!

I miss seeing his pretty face all done up, and i'm interested in what vision he's got for this era, if there’s a theme, what he wears, is he setting trends, and yes, the aesthetic. I'm also interested in hearing him talking about his inspiration, his worldview and i really hope he'll do some fun promo! Or tell new funny stories. I also wonder if he'll talk about Liam.

I also can't wait for tour, because he's just as much an entertainer as he is an artist. I want fan service and fan interactions. He's a stand up comedian. I want to see him be gay, celebrate queerness and to help fans come out. I'm also interested in if they've come up with better ways to promote him than doing PR relationships, and i hope we've seen the end of the worst closeting. I also want to see if he fired his photographer or if he's got new members of the band. Will he wear new jewelry? Will he outgay himself? Will we see him interact more with Louis or talk about him?

I'm basically interested in everything HARRY, his personality, charisma, humour and kindness. We are similar and i relate to him a lot. I'm not interested in any narrative they'll use to promote him, his straightsona, his fake relationships or his music (or acting for that matter).

i wish nctzen in general supports doyoung solo😔. It pains me to stream the MV but it barely moves. But i know i can’t really blame them. I read a number of dppus on x loves to say nctzen are dy hater but solo stanning asides, i think they really just don’t vibe with the music. In 127 case it’s heavily centred around hip-hop, rnb, & edm, so dy’s genre is really far off. Same case with yuta. It would be nice tho if they just supports all members at least just by watching the mv once. Just my wishful thinking. Huu what to do cause dy himself know it’s not a trendy genre even among koreans. I guess i just need to accept this (Dy, i think you need to do sad, depressing song. The MV thoooo. I love the storyline so much. It’s significantly better than Little Light. I find the previous one quite boring and straightforward but this!! It gives another layer to the song and i love this for non korean fans cause it’s definitely hard to understand the context behind korean lyrics. So they have another thing to dissect and deep dive into.

I agree, watching a new MV at least once of each member's solo/duet should be a cultural norm in a fandom of a group. And it seems to be the norm in many other fandoms, heck, Hybe fandoms often support all groups only because they belong to the same lable as their own biases. Alas, nctzens are known for not being very united. Evenso, the Memory view count remains too low for the size of NCT fandom. There are plenty of solo-stans, but there are also plenty of unit and even group stans. There are those who have Doyoung as a bias-wrecker, or like him because he is attentive to their bias. Additionally, there are k-pop fans who check out new releases. Not to mention Doyoung's own fans. Given all this, 700-900k is the very least an MV should gain in a couple of days. 12h ago it was 364k and now it is 365k. 1k in so many hours? Please...

Let's take Baekhyun's example. He is famous as the solo artist who sells the most albums (outside of BTS). His recent album sold 1mln+ in one week. His title track MV reflects it - 32mln (3 weeks). A number you usually see for Taemin, Taeyeon, Kai, and other popular solo artist with dedicated fanbases and interested gp. However, Baekhyun also released two full-track MVs: "Lemonade" and "Chocolate". 9 days and 246k, 3 days and 183k. How are the numbers so low? Where are his core fans who are eager to bulk buy to support him? At the very least it should be 400-500k.

Now, Riize. A groups whose members are at the top of brand rankings in SK. Even with the scandal they still have a sizeable fanbase as a young bg. TTs: "Bag Bad Back" 10mln and "Fly up" 47mln. However, the additional B-side MVs range from 485k to 760k. Again, where are the solo-stans of 6 boys. Do they have 100k per soul only? Seems unlikely.

Either YT doesn't count views from users with AdBlock on, or a lot of MVs are simply not promoted and not offered even for subscribers. It seems, YT changed it algorythm to pushing shorts and private channels more. So fans who don't keep a very close eye and watch some NCT or Doyoung content daily missed the release.

You are right about the genre. Also, not everyone likes Do's tone of voice, it's normal, too. Don't be discouraged! The views matter for music shows, this is the primary reason for streaming, and other artists should also get the same problems (if YT is to blame). Meaning, the playing field should remain even.

Thinking a lot of how social media affect art, how it is getting increasingly more difficult to earn money with it and honestly it just... makes me so sad?.. Disclaimer: I do not want you to pity me. I just want to share some thoughts. Some fears, maybe. Some regrets.

I know that I might never be able to make a good fortune by drawing illustrations, because it seems that I was entirely wrong with my priorities? I always wanted to do more: bigger pieces, more characters and hidden details. I wanted my art to tell a story, if possible.

Who could possible know that most of the people will move to mobile devices with small vertical screens, on which wide detailed illustrations with cinematic feel will look the worst?

Who could possible know that the algorythms of the social media would want you to draw MORE yet, somehow, draw less? I could go insane doing the same stuff over and over again: small portraits, halfbodies in the same simplistic style because they look best in instagram or on tumblr mobile app and gather more attention? And they are also faster to make, thus you can please the allmightly algorythm posting every day or two?..

I love my work, I adore doing various things, I love it when one week I work on a traditional art fullbody with a golden halo and the other three weeks - on a digital artwork with a dynamic fighting scene. But gods. How tiring is it to know that the piece you've been working on will get barely any attention, because three-weeks gap in my posting schedule will, for sure, upset the allmighty algorithm.

They say that it is always bad to switch style or a theme, because people get upset and unfollow you once they see something they aren't waiting to see. Different character body type? Unfollowing. Different facial feature? Unfollowing. Different aesthetic? Unfollowing.

Slightly different shading and coloring? Unfollowing.

But variety has key importance to me. I wish to draw characters which are drastically different from each other. I want to experiment. I want to explore. I want a drawing to be a puzzle I will be solving for hours, days, weeks, never getting bored. I do not wish my work to become a rutine to serve the algorithm or even the general public.

I see, like, those commercially succesfull artists, who post every day earning more money per week than I will be ever earning per month. It is all the same story over and over again: conventionally attractive characters. Halfbodies. Pleasant facial expressions: faint smiles, slightly raised eyebrows. Simple pose, 3/4, detailed clothing. Always the same stylistic choises. Always the same aesthetic.

Of course, sometimes they do draw stronger, bigger pieces, they experiment, they search for something new - but mostly secretely. In private. During the free time they earn - by their hard work and dedication.

I... can not afford drawing stuff for myself in my free time. Honestly, I don't have free time either than the time I spend on my trips to hometown - the only moments I could spend with my family. Neither can I draw five similar pieces in a row, because my brain starts to melt like a strawberry sundae?.. Because when I get bored, I lose concentration? Because, I made variety the key feature of my art and this turned out to be the worst decision an artist can make?

Am I just... weak? Am I stupid? Am I unworthy? Am I childish for wanting my job to be fun and entertaining and fulfilling to do?

There's this group chat I am in, and today someone, the succesful artist, said that anyone, who has less than 10K followers are, to say so, a no one? All of a sudden I feel so upset. My day is ruined. I never had 10K anywhere but VK (which is absolutely useless to anyone doing commissions). I never even cared about numbers... I never wanted to be big. Be popular. For most of the time, my biggest wish was to feel... fulfilled? To be happy, be proud of what I am doing?

I feel fulfilled. But I also don't want to starve myself to death. And I certainly feel like if I, one day, will want to have family, I wouldn't be able to make enough money to afford having a child.

Was I... entirely wrong? Did I waste my time chasing phantoms? Is it too late for me? Will I be among those, who might not survive the hard times, at least, as an artist?

Not... pleased but maybe some more fucking around with the algorythm will make it nicer? Book suggestions and music suggestions are one of the places I do enjoy some algorythmic based suggestions. They're close enough to what I like to have a good chance of me enjoying it, and often include books I never would have thought to read otherwise. plus the social media element is nice to have mini book clubs and recs with friends.
