I wanted to ask about your honest feelings regarding Grim and more then often obnoxious behaviour especially during events. This is coming from someone who loves cats and one of the things that got me into Twst was the fact that there was a talking cat in it (I still love the little shi* and look forward to his new outfits. I'm basically the meme " i still love them but sometimes i just want to get in a car and run them over".) For me it was annoying but a little cute like the first few times but now that we are done with 7 books of main story and a buckload of events his obnoxiousness is starting to feel really annoying. His character feels like it had no development at all. I know events are not canon nor take main story progress in to consideration but come on! Yuu's motivation to rescue Grim in book 6 didn't felt genuine either. Even now his antics in eternity float didn't come across adorable but exasperating instead. How do you feel about Grim?

Also, curiously if you ,as in you the author not your OC, were in yuu's shoes what would you do? How would you interact with grim? Do you think you can handle him realistically? I know you don't self insert yourself but just hypothetically speaking how would you feel about him?

Hihi ^^ Thank you for the well wishes! I think I've made a full recovery (or close to it?) at this point, but there's some lifestyle changes I made in the aftermath. Thankfully, it's nothing too bad!

Before I give my thoughts on Grim, I want to preface by disclosing my biases so you can understand where I'm coming from. While I definitely prefer cats to dogs, I've realized recently that I don't actually like cats?? I just tolerate them better than dogs. This is mostly on account of the fur, which I generally find very gross and messy. (One of my friends jokes this is because I'm just a Mammal Hater 💀) I do happen to be a pet owner and my (non-specific) pet very much has Grim's personality. They're loud, they're needy, they love to eat, they cause trouble, they act like they're the boss around here--so I'm sort of used to and desensitized to most of Grim's behaviors.

Now, about Grim! I generally like him (mostly because he basically acts like my own nonspecific pet and has cute ribbons). He's unfortunately always going to be my annoying little fur baby, but I totally understand why some people don't like Grim. His voice is admittedly kind of grating, and he always seems to be causing Yuu/the player grief. I disagree with those who dislike Grim for "stealing" screentime from Yuu; I think he's a suitable stand-in for them, since the game has to take measures to keep Yuu vague for self-insert purposes. Grim did nothing wrong, he is just serving his function. I also disagree with those who find it demeaning when Grim calls us "minion". To me, it doesn't feel any different than a friend ironically calling another friend "idiot" or something of the sort. Additionally, several other characters in the Twst cast have derogatory or arrogant nicknames for Yuu/the player or for their peers, but for some reason those have largely been adopted and interpreted as signs of affection by the fandom??? Which has always been super odd to me. I do see a point to be made about being annoyed at Grim for not taking responsibility for his actions (Yuu is often demanded to control him), but I’d say that’s intentional to move the plot along, clunky as it is. This doesn’t feel different to me than your pet, child, or sibling is being a nuisance and you having to get them under control in public. It’s also difficult for me to stay mad at Grim for this when other NRC students arguably act similar (causing trouble but not apologizing or taking accountability) + are ruder to Yuu but they get excused or adored for it while Grim catches flack. Why is there this bias? Is it because Grim isn’t a conventionally attractive anime boy?? 😭 Is it because we are forced to spend more time with Grim so he has more opportunities to be pointed out? I don’t get it.

That being said, that doesn't mean I think Grim is necessarily a well-written character, especially not for most of the main story. As much as I love book 6, the kidnapping + tearful reunion ring hollow if the player isn't already invested in Grim before then. The issue is that the prologue, plus books 1-5 do very little to show moments of Yuu and Grim genuinely bonding. Most interactions between the two involve Grim making trouble, his skipping responsibilities, or generally being cocky, and Yuu having to clean up after his messes. That doesn't endear him to us. We don't really get moments of Yuu and Grim seriously getting to know each other or points where we get to see his good traits. Book 6 would have worked a lot better if there had been moments dedicated to Yuu and Grim being more intimate beforehand. You don't have to make Grim a completely new character; work off of his existing traits and give him scenarios where he is allowed to shine and support Yuu.

Maybe in the prologue or book 1, Yuu is having trouble falling asleep because they're so anxious about being in a new world and Grim tries to act all tough to reassure them they're safe by his side, and this finally helps Yuu drift off. In book 2, maybe Leona's picking on Yuu a little too hard during their practice game and Grim feels he must stand up for his minion against a bully. For book 3, there could be a scene where Yuu scolds Grim for trying to take the easy way out and Grim confides in them about not wanting to flunk out because being a great mage is all he has ever wanted. Then when Yuu asks why this is his dream, Grim can't come up with an answer (which calls attention to Grim not really knowing much about himself or his past). As for book 4, expand more on Grim trying to break them out of Scarabia with a spoon. Play up Grim acting like he has to be the hero and do what he can to help his minion out of a tight spot! In book 5, have Grim help Yuu with coaching everyone or maybe getting a little jealous that there's so many people he has to share his living space with. Then Yuu can reassure him he's irreplaceable!! And sprinkle in more scenes where Yuu and Grim just connect over being outcasts, alone and unsure in this world but able to find solace in one another. By the time book 6 comes around, we'll have all these moments to look back fondly on and motivate us to rescue Grim, who cared so much for Yuu. Grim, whom we've developed a friendship with over the main story... Grim, who is now locked away in an unfamiliar face with no friends around...

For events, I'm willing to be a little more patient with him since 1) they're not canon to the main story and 2) Grim is obviously used just to shoehorn Yuu's presence into several events, especially the hometowns (through his whining about wanting to do something fun/to eat lots of tasty food). I can't recall a specific instance of Grim being super annoying in events... but I will say that I do find Grim annoying in Eternity Float. Grim seems a little overwritten here, if that makes sense??? He's acting more cartoonish and childish than usual... Like, Grim comedically chomps onto a large ham hanging from the ceiling with ZERO understanding that he needs to pay for it first?? And he wants a bigger slice of pizza (but Riddle tells him it's rude to reach across the table), so he tries spinning the plate instead, only for the pizza to go SPLAT on Malleus's face??? Then he hoses people down with a water gun... SORRY, did Grim mentally regress a few years???? OTL

Mmm... If I were in Yuu's shoes, I think I'd deal with Grim similarly with how I deal with my irl (non-specific) pet: sternly yet fairly? I'd try to train Grim, make sure he eats a balanced diet, gets exercise, and keeps stimulated, bathe him, take him out on walks, give him treats and toys if he's well-behaved, put him in the corner and have him think about what he did if he doesn't, always keep a first aid kit on hand... Oh, and I'd carry him everywhere either by the scruff or in a carrier bag. One hand on him at all times, or else he might wander off and cause trouble. I think it'd be hard dealing with his fire magic and rashness but 💦 I've been told I'm pretty patient, so I think I could handle it if I had to. Whether I'd LIKE it or not is another matter entirely. Grim is basically a little kid or a toddler, and I'm honestly not a fan of children. An animal being feisty is... fine, even cute. But the instant the animal starts giving me lip in complete sentences, it's a lot less charming. I still feel like Grim has the potential to grow on me over time though... There's a weird charm to his attitude, haha.

I don't generally allow anonymous asks, but I'll make an exception this time.

As a bit of context, the reason I keep anonymous asks turned off most of the time is because the very first one I got in my inbox was someone rambling about how they wanted to take a relatively popular GL-focused post I'd made and make it all about the Batfam, with some Guy Gardner hate thrown in. So believe me when I say I understand and empathize completely with OP's request to leave their name out so that they don't catch any strays from Batfans.

For all that I shout angrily at the clouds about the Batfandom, I don't actually believe that every single one of them is the kind of asshole who makes posts that disrespect the rest of DC to glaze the Batfam and gleefully mocks anyone who gets annoyed by the blatant mischaracterization. Every fandom has its toxic members (and I know for a fact that this is true for the Green Lanterns as well because they're why I quit Reddit)

But it is very much more apparent with the Batfandom because, well...

And that's just the main Batman tag. Just from a sheer numbers point of view, even if only 1% of those followers are the annoying kind, that's still around 18,000 people.

As for why there's so many of them? It's simple. Batman is DC's favorite child. The history of how that developed is not something I feel like unpacking today, but when the Dark Knight and his family are the characters who are being pushed most by the company, it naturally follows that they have the biggest following online.

Which is why my answer to the question about whether I think it's the Bats' wealth or the potential for self-insert that makes them especially appealing is that I don't believe it's either of those things. Batman isn't the only billionaire hero with no powers and a big family of allies (Green Arrow says hi), and if you look at any DC character's tag on Tumblr, you'll find all sorts of headcanons that are clearly based on the author inserting themselves into said character.

Rather, I think that the Batfamily's popularity makes them the natural entry point for the rest of DC Comics. OP themselves says they got into DC through Red Hood, and that is pretty typical for many people I've talked to. Their first introduction might be through the Wayne Family Adventures webtoon, or the Battinson movie. They look up their new blorbos on AO3/TikTok/Tumblr and find that a lot of people also are fans of these characters. Through this community, they learn that DC has even more characters beyond the Batfam, each with decades of rich history.

For some people, this is where they discover other DC fandoms like the Flash or Young Justice '98. Others delve deeper into the Batfandom by seeking out the original source material to learn more about their favorite characters.

But for some people, the entry point is where their exploration ends. They're content to enjoy themselves in the shallow end of the proverbial pool where the Batfamily are the only important characters and the fanon and memes have little to no connection with the comics, shows, or any other media.

And to be perfectly honest, I don't find anything inherently wrong with that. In some ways, it's not far off from my own approach to Green Lantern fandom- hence why I've kept the name "incorrect-green-lantern-quotes" even after branching out to other stuff like writing AUs and headcanons. The problem lies in refusing to acknowledge any other approach to fandom besides your own- in dismissing people who are offended by your jokes as "taking silly comics too seriously" or "gatekeeping" and making them into the bad guys for asking that you not shove the disrespect of their characters in their faces. But I digress.

Yeah, the Batfandom is big. Like, orders of magnitude larger than some of the other DC fandoms. So it's just simple statistics that you're more likely to run into their toxic stans than any other DC hero's.

Headcanons 4 Mr Qi and/or Gunter since they barely have any headcanons

Okay so like. I'm gonna be real, I don't really think about these characters much 😂 Mr. Qi I think about sometimes because he is kissing and holding hands with my friend's farmer but that's the extent of my thoughts. So I'm gonna come up with these on the fly, hope you like them anyway!

Headcanon A:  realistic

Gunther probably lives outside of town and commutes in, he kind of strikes me as the type to be very invested in his work more than the town? So I feel like he studied to be a museum curator and this was the only opening he could find, but he never really settled into town with everyone else. That's my reasoning for why he's not at festivals or really all that active as a part of the town.

As for Mr. Qi, up until I met people who write fics about him and draw him, I genuinely thought he was just meant to be ConcernedApe's meta self-insert character. Kind of like how the Wandering Minstrel is for Yoshi-P, in ffxiv? I feel like the likeness is a little similar (but blue lol) and Mr. Qi is so tied to perfection/completion I kind of.. just assumed... lol maybe that's weird to say but I never considered him as a unique character until somewhat recently! I don't mean anything bad by that and I'm happier to think of him as being his own character now, but that was my first impression anyway!

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

Mr. Qi is Sebastian's absent father gdsjgkjd I don't genuinely believe this BUT I was playing the downtown zuzu city mod and I saw there's a Mr. Qi club in it and there's a poster of Sebastian (and I think the modder's farmer? Not sure) and I showed it to my friends who were like.. well clearly he's looking out for Seb I guess and my next thought was like omg yeah because he's his dad secretly 😂 it's perfect!! (I mean really I have been developing an OC as Seb's dad but shhhh it's silly, enjoy the silly)

I've seen people speculate that Gunther is a ghost and I think it's so funny to think about. First of all... that a ghost would be like... oughhh I must complete my museum collection before I can pass on ouuughhghghghhhhh LOL and also that a lot of characters seem to interact with him but no one has caught on! It's so silly.

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

I'm not really sure... maybe just that they are both so lonely... :'C Mr. Qi may speak in riddles but maybe that's just his special interest and he needs a pal! Gunther needs to complete his collection but also like.. maybe he'd also want someone to ask him about his day... 😖 idk lmao I'm being so silly and so unserious, I don't really have anything in mind for this!

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

Ummm see this conflicts me because it's like, unrealistic but canon to me, basically? But to me like, it's so canon and real that Mr. Qi holds hands and kisses my friend's farmer.. but that's not unrealistic that's actually SO realistic and based also 🥰 they get little mocktails at the casino together and sit beside the lake in the oasis at midnight... He gives her his jacket because she's chilly in the night air of the desert...! Rahhhh

As for Gunther, I'd wanna think he's more of an active member of the community. I know for gameplay reasons he never could be, but it's fun to think about. Imagine him chatting with Penny, Maru, Seb, Caroline, Elliott, and the farmer about what books they're reading when they come to borrow some. :3 Trying to find obscure almanacs and recipe books for the farmer, books about exotic teas and gardening for Caroline, and all the best fiction in the genres of romance, sci-fi, and fantasy for the others 😊 Again it's not really unrealistic, but rather, what I see as being most canon for him in how I interpret the character!

Okay I know Twitter is the New York of bad takes, but this isn’t even hiding their bias. At least try to edit Aang better in the meme, lol.

They just use Katara as their self insert lol. She didn’t even have a crush on Haru; that’s completely fanon. And she obviously never liked Zuko, either. She had a crush on Jet because she believed he was a leader and a good person who cared about helping others and making the world a better place, and obviously hated him after finding out what kind of person he really was. Which is also what she likes about Aang; that he’s a leader and cares about others. She had an obvious crush on him from very early on but didn’t see him as an option until the Fortune Teller episode, partly because she’s inexperienced and had only liked one other guy before and partly because she still viewed him as the larger than life avatar, someone kind of unattainable or that she’d never have a shot with which is why she tried to shut down Sokka’s teasing in said episode despite having acted on her crush by asking Aang his opinion of how she looked (even posing for him) because she obv liked him and wanted to see if he thought she was pretty

“haha she liked 3 older guys and then this child!!” Katara never liked half of said guys and the only other guy she had a canonical crush on was extremely short lived and served to teach her a lesson in romantic love, which played into her developing feelings for Aang. She also never even liked Jet because he was older or taller than her. She liked him based on what she believed his personality and character was, which she misjudged severely. So it’s not shocking she fell for Aang later considering he embodied everything she was attracted to, and there was no act he put on like Jet did. It also didn’t hurt that he was her best friend, either lol

My informal review of The Last Graduate (here be spoilers)

Well, I just finished The Last Graduate, and I’m just sitting with all my muscles clenched in tension and sorrow, lol

But seriously, what an interesting ending……I’m not sure what to make of it yet? The narrative was leading you to expect a big push/big sacrifice from El when something inevitably went wrong, and I was hoping that everything would simply go right (obviously), but I wasnt unaware of Orion’s opportunity to make the self-sacrifice play. WAS IT NECESSARY THOUGH???? *insert look how they massacred my boy meme. i think i read way too much of this book late last night (whoops), so my comprehension of it is not as developed as with the first book (shame on me for reading too fast like a glutton), but what a great sequel! I liked watching El wrestle with learning to trust people and work as a team, I loved watching her relationship with sisters sorry her friends develop, and I loved the growth of her relationship with Orion as well*. I will say I think his character has been a little underutilized at times, in a way not untypical for a romantic interest of either gender, but Novik that’s my mannnnnnnnnnnn, I wanna read about him! But we definitely did get some good scenes that developed he and El’s relationship and seemed the seeds for some of his own character development (let this man GROW). I’m not sure yet how I think the ending plays into that. If Patience-Fortitude was truly going to recenter the world, then his sacrifice was noble and necessary. But if it wasn’t, then why does my precious child need to kill it himself instead of letting El cast it into the void, hmmm? Side note: I loved El finally coming to appreciate the Scholomance cause I was freaking devastated by her willingness to condemn it. Maybe if I had suffered as much as she had, I’d hate my Alma mater too, but the loss of a place you know so well, a place where you have the happy memories of making your first friends—that’s gotta count for something, right?

I forgot to mention this in my review of A Deadly Education, but El’s Mom and their relationship is so important. God bless her, I’d love to meet her. I’d be exasperated at her character role as the Sole Voice of Truth and Goodness, except that’s the truths attributed to her are valuable, nuanced, and beautiful, and her knowledge of them makes sense in the context of how she has chosen to live her life. A life of uncomprising, open-hearted service and self-sacrifice teaches you a lot! Which brings us to one of my favorite bits of the book. I adore that Novik, Scholomance, and El all realize that you have to be faithful in the little moments because they shape you!!!! She had grown accustomed to saving the freshman instead of sacrificing them for her own benefit, and this shaped her character and prepared her to realize and then do what needed to be done to save them all. (I have so many good quotes saved without page numbers, so you’ll get those later, but boy howdy, these books have so beautiful things to say)

I’m so, so invested in what’s going to happen in the next book, but I’m not ready to have finished this delightful trilogy either. They’re going to be great rereads for sure! Here’s hoping things turn out okay for Orion (also why did El’s mother warn her off him? We do not know.) I’d love to see El get to change the world with her tiny enclaves, despite my dislike of large stakes in a story since they often render the plot unwieldy to the point of disbelief. It’s hard to write a story about something that changes the world without either 1. Writing Lord of the Rings or 2. Being massively and disgustingly reductive about what it takes to change the world and the u comfortable, uncontrollable consequences of doing so. Nevertheless, I am ready to be hurt again!

*I am once again asking for people not to put sex scenes in books. Please. Don’t do it. Ever.

3. What was the first thing you decided on, the character's name, appearance, personality or their role in the story?

Nadya’s appearance was the easiest thing for me to decide on because she is meant to strongly resemble myself, as she was originally a self-insert, and I had also decided very early on that Adelaide Kane would be her face claim.

4. And reverse, which one of the four things did you struggle with the most?

Probably her personality? Although she is modeled after myself, I wanted to define clear characteristics that are unique to her and her situation, but even now I think that I would struggle to describe her personality.

11. Is there any existing character from other media that your character resembles? Was the resemblance intentional or was it a coincidence?

I think that Nadya is very similar to characters such as Éowyn from Lord of the Rings and Padmé Amidala from Star Wars. None of her resemblances are intentional, but I love the connections nonetheless.

16. Is there any memes or running jokes associated with the character, both in- and out of universe?

Absolutely there is. Aside from The Lion and The Lamb AU memes that we’ve made, I personally think that the fact that she has so many kids and names most of them after people in her life is quite funny. I realized after naming Ren that it could be a reference to Renly, which is hilarious and absolutely will be brought up at some point by another character.

20. Bonus question: share any additional thoughts, art, favourite scenes, anything you've been waiting for a chance to ramble about

This is the most random ramble ever, but I’m gonna talk about Nadya and her having not one, but two sets of twins. You might think that’s a lot of twins, and it is, but I’ve developed a reasoning for it. Well, actually two reasons, but they’re related. Firstly, Nadya is canonically extremely fertile. That is part of why Tywin wants her married to Jaime (and Darren) so badly. It’s easy for her to get pregnant, and it’s easier for her to have twins. Secondly, twins run in the Dormaire family. That’s kind of why I made Therese and Tristan twins as well, to establish a precedent. So, Nadya (and her brothers as well) are genetically predisposed to have a higher chance of having twins!

2. As stated with Billy, she served the purpose of a fan oc to pair up with Billy's predecessor. More accurately, she was at first a blank slate y/n fic readers could project on before I realized I was imagining a fully formed character in place of a vauge humanoid/self insert, so I took the logical step to make her an oc. She was very different, given that she was a regular han at the time. Very down to earth, semi normal sentimental sort of person with an added edge of street smarts. She had a younger and two older characterization, one where she is a mother, and one where she was a childless divorcee, though not a lot of her personality was different between those versions. When she was younger she was more energetic and hopeful, as a mother she was more tired and content, and as a single woman she was more unsure of herself and dejected, though still open to new experiences.

Her becoming a demon however started a process where she slowly become more unhinged, more reprehensible, more free and crazy. Her need for dominance became more apparent and spread further than from the bedroom, her protectiveness can turn toxic and she doesn't have to be so careful as she was as a human woman. Her traits, her passion and stubbornness and temper have become more pronounced, freedom from boredom becoming her main motivation. And I could go on about the many little nuances of her change, the trauma that informes her character, her hunger and fear of losing her mind, but I could be talking till morning. It was a gradual transformation over the year and few months, but a very satisfying one for me.

16. She loves to preen her husband like a baby as a running joke. And not really a joke or a meme, but I keep drawing her brooding, so I guess it's a trope at least with her.

Sexuality Headcanon: Asexual panromantic! I'm not really sure where this came from (not that these headcanons have to come from anywhere), but it's just what I've had and still have in mind for her. Gender Headcanon: I adopted this one from you, but: nonbinary woman! I imagine that gender for the Machina is very different to how it is for (say) Homs or High Entia, but I would say this is the most fitting description for her in my view too, now~ A ship I have with said character: It does just say a ship, not my favourite or the best ship or anything, so.. I feel less biased saying my own between her and my self-insert Citri, hehe. It's still to this day one of very few selfships I've actually commissioned art for, and even though i haven't had much chance to develop it since it's been a while since I've experienced anything to do with XC1, I do still think it's neat if I do say so myself! ^-^ (If my selfship doesn't count, then.. I really like the idea of her and Melia!) A BROTP I have with said character: I think the dynamic between her and Lady Meyneth is really really interesting, and I'd like to explore it/see it explored more! A NOTP I have with said character: Egil. That's her brother. No. (I would give an actual okay ship, but I'm not actually that familiar with who people have tried to ship her with outside of the more-plausible-to-me options, oops) A random headcanon: I cannot remember if the Bionis has tigers (or creatures like them), but if it does, I can imagine she would be quite fond of them if ever she encountered one, given how her own markings and overall colour scheme match them a bit! I think it's cool to think about what she might think of the Bionis and its life, should she get a chance to see any of it. General Opinion over said character: Vanea my appreciated!! I feel like she is very underrated, which is maybe because the game doesn't explore her character to as much of an extent as it could, but I really wish it did! While I've still yet to actually play XC1 myself, and it's been a long time since I interacted with its canon in any regard (by watching a playthrough of it or anything), it is still a game I think of fondly, and I'm glad that my romantic attachment to Vanea allows me a way to connect with it more concretely/within a pre-existing context, despite not having played it!

How did you first get into writing fic?

Back when I was in high school (a long, long time ago: ye olden dayes), I dabbled around the edges of fandom without really knowing that was what I was doing. I found fanfiction.net and read some things erratically, and I also had a long-running AIM chat with a friend that was basically us role-playing self-insert rpf where we lived in a big house with the cast of LOTR. Obviously I was also very, very popular. Eventually, when I went to college, I got caught up in other things and spent a period without fic in my life.

Then back in 2020 I was working a job that was really crushing me spiritually and was looking for sources of serotonin. I knew of AO3, and I started fossicking about, and after reading for a while, I decided to try writing a little myself, as an experiment. I've never been particularly good at relaxing or having hobbies, but I found that writing fic was something I could get sufficiently absorbed in, to the point that I could actually block out other anxieties for a while (but watch out!). A little while after that I went looking for other people who were also writing and reading, and I've been here ever since.

What's the most rewarding part of fic writing for you?

I love the discoveries. Many of my stories start with just a kernel of something: maybe a premise, maybe a single scene or line. Then I start to feel my way around the rest of the narrative by plopping myself down in different places/times and testing for things that feel crunchy. This means I almost never have all the plot beats of a story in my head before I start (sometimes I have hardly any), and while I have an initial sense of what I think I'm after, it often happens that many elements that end up feeling structurally and thematically crucial to the story turn out to be surprises or late developments: like I've been excavating a creature and imagining what its skeleton looks like and then I uncover a spinal cord or a major ligament that changes the whole shape of the beast in a way I could never have anticipated.

I think a lot about this quote from James Baldwin: “When you’re writing, you’re trying to find out something which you don’t know. The whole language of writing for me is finding out what you don’t want to know, what you don’t want to find out. But something forces you to anyway.”

What are some of the most satisfying obstacles to overcome in the writing process?

The segment of the writing process when I'm most likely to abandon a story is when I have it 10-35% finished: I've gotten down whatever sparked my initial inspiration, but I haven't done enough of the legwork to start uncovering what else is there to excite me, and that's when I'm mostly prone to feelings of, "this is nothing, actually." That means that when and if I can push past 50%, I often get a fresh surge of momentum that can feel really exhilarating (sometimes almost too exhilarating lol), and though it doesn't happen with every fic, there's nothing that feels more heady to me than the stage where the fic starts to feel like a place where my brain wants to live.

I think that for this case, what would work the best is to set Dain in the post-Genshin story verse I've set for him. He's in a situation in which he's grown tired, he wants to just do his thing until he passes away (his lengthy life still continues, he just wouldn't be immune to mortality if something were to happen to him). However, even though he wouldn't be as sacrificial as he used to be in Teyvat due to a plethora of reasons, he would be unable to turn a blind eye on what is happening in Jinzhou and perhaps what follows after in other parts of Solaris-3. Anything that is reminiscent of the Abyss is highly triggering to him enough to incite him to take action when he can do something about it and the Lament would be no exception.

More Jinhsi-centric now, I have to admit that I was close to bold the grumpy and sunshine trope, but it doesn't feel quite right. If anything because Jinhsi is carrying her own past, a fabricated identity born from Jué choosing her as its appointed resonator and a duty to carry on her shoulders. Nevertheless, she still carries her own individuality which is what I'd like to focus more on for this case. I'd see Dain as a kind of confidant with the passing of time, relying on her discoveries he's had of the bigger picture of the world given her interest in keeping tabs with that through her relationship with the Black Shores. But despite what he went through and his mostly bleak view on anything regarding himself, he carries a sense of positivity towards others. He would remind her to give herself time to take care of herself as she does of others, as well as he would also be the kind of respecting her resolve when more self-sacrificial moments arise (like the Mt. Firmament episode) because he wouldn't dare to say something to not do something like that when he himself did it at the cost of what he truly wanted for himself.

If these ideas sound plausible to you, I think that eventually this could lead to something of a more romantic nature down the line. Dain isn't one to need to be introduced as anything special to Jinhsi nor he thinks that it'd be exactly right to not keep things under wrap due to her role in Jinzhou's society and the weight of expectations set on her, and I also don't think that he might be glued eternally on Jinzhou either, as it was said that one Lament episode leads to a chain of effects on other places too. But it'd definitely be the place he would always come back to and of course inform her of his discoveries and the situations wherever he goes.

All in all, Dain would be in a place where he's trying to come to terms with the fact that he succeeded at long last where he had failed, that he did something good for humanity in Teyvat and thus he needn't continue to feel so negatively about himself with baby steps. He's still scarred. He still has a hard time to paint himself at least in a neutral view and bask in things he would've wanted for himself. But unlike how it'd be in Teyvat before the deed is done, there is hope.

Unlike with Jinhsi where I think that it'd be more of a stable kind of situation of staying more in one place and have a chance of seeing the development in a more lineal way, I feel that with Acheron it'd be different. Starting from the premise that I could paint Dain here in three different points of time: during Khaenri'ah, post-Cataclysm and post-Genshin story.

To put it briefly, and given some shared traits with the Imaginary Tree, I extend Dain's realm of possibilities of being in different places thanks to his intimate connection to Irminsul. Furthermore, I think that it enters well within the realm of possibilities for him to be seen in other worlds as he seems to be a bearer of the power from beyond and, as per my observations from powers that caused great changes to Teyvat, these powers always seem to stem from outside Teyvat.

With that said, I think that it'd be possible for the two of them to meet sporadically in different moments, each making Dain have different experiences and views the more he knows and the more he's experienced. Given Acheron's circumstances too, I don't think that they'd be the kind of establishing anything (even a friendship) in one single place, but more of a culmination of several meetings across different places.

Perhaps it wouldn't be so in the beginning due to Dain barely seeing things outside of the box (moments in which he would be the one learning more from Acheron than the other way around, I'd say), but as time progresses he would be able to stand at a point in which he can share his views of a much larger picture with her, maybe coinciding at some points, maybe digressing on others. Whichever the case, it would come from a place of respect and willingness to learn. If it were to come down to romantic grounds, more than lovers I'd think of them as companions. Acheron's waning memory is worth taking in consideration in this as well, which is another reason why I'd see them more of the kind of two individuals who might take comfort in the other's presence, even feeling safe with one another despite the great danger one could suppose for the other.

9. Do you have a specific lyric or quote which you associate with your OC?

Now I've mentioned before I don't do playlists and I only check lyrics for a very select few things...

Which means my pool of options is very shallow and the lyrics that come to mind are from something VERY obscure. This is my personal translation of the lyrics (done at the moment, too). For the title and further details, please DM me if you want. I would very much like to not summon that particular fandom:

23. What emotion is the hardest for your OC to process? How about express?

Now that's a hard question.

For the hardest to process, I lean towards insecurity.

So many of her problems boil down to poorly managing her insecurities. Societal pressure gave her such a complex she spent years on a self-destructive campaign of teenage rebellion and then, she struggles during the game in no small part because she was too insecure and with no actual support system. There is a reason I argue she would have an easier time as a companion, having someone (the KC) to fully rely on.

There are other emotions at play in both instances, but I feel insecurity is the one that has most consistently given her trouble.

As for the hardest to express... That's guilt. No contest.

During the late game and post-game, one of the main reasons she doesn't seek out help is because she feels guilty about her own thoughts and fears voicing them would only hurt those around her. For a long time, she's blind to the fact she is actually hurting them even more this way.

25. What is your favorite thing about your OC?

That one is both hard and easy. There is a lot I love about her, but... her design has a very, very special place in my heart.

Before I sat down to draw her, I was feeling quite unmotivated with my art. I didn't feel ready to design my own characters from scratch and, being a very OC-driven artist, that drastically reduced the pool of options. Not being able to branch out made it hard to find said motivation.

Mind you, designing Nela was h a r d and ironing out that first draft of her design took me way longer than I care to admit. So many failed attempts... What started as some silly low stakes doodles to solidify a bit more the image in my mind (to never be shared) turned into a whole endeavor.

But it opened a door for me: I could, in fact, do character design!! I didn't need to limit myself! It was hard, but possible! It didn't turn out terrible at least!

... And I've been ever since in the biggest drawing spree since I started with drawing (admittedly that's not very long lmao). I've worked on the designs of multiple characters already, and I want to give more of my children an actual face. I'm so thankful for what she gave me (the creative freedom, the motivation) and proud of the work I put into it.

It may be also why I've gone above and beyond to develop said design further. Insert here reference sheet shenanigans.

This whole situation is made funnier because I remember stressing out over how much time I was dedicating to it because that was time I wasn't practicing things like, you know, posing, anatomy, color/shading/render...

7. What is an aspect of their appearance that you like the most?

Their urge markings! I picked it as a tattoo at character creation just bc I thought it looked cool, but it grew into more of a scar when I was developing them: each time they succumb to their urge it spreads and reaches a little further and, as I'm sure you can imagine, their self control slips a lot. By present day bg3 canon the ends of the tendrils reach about halfway down their chest -- which makes it far less noticeable to their travelling companions when it continues to spread during the events of the game.

14. Do you have any quotes tied to the character, either from the story itself or from another source that fit them?

I naturally feel very normal about wretched thing, pull yourself together. I don't really have any specific quotes I go to for them, but here are some fun ones pulled from their pinterest:

In universe, I don't think so...they don't really lend themselves well to humour lol. Out of universe...nothing actually funny, just a sort of dry humour that they're set up to fail in every universe I've put them in 🥰 it's also been implied by some people that they're a self insert but this is patently untrue and there are zero similarities between the two of us thank you very much
