hi, i haven't read the iliad and the odyssey but want to - do u have a specific translation you recommend? the emily wilson one has been going around bc, y'know, first female translator of the iliad and odyssey into english, but i was wondering on if you had Thoughts

Hi anon! Sorry for the somewhat late response and I'm glad you trust me with recommendations! Full, disclosure, I am somewhat of a traditionalist when it comes to translations of the source text of the Iliad + Odyssey combo wombo, which means I tend to prefer closeness in literal verbiage over interpretation of the poetic form of these epics - for that reason, my personal preferred versions of the Odyssey and Iliad both are Robert Fitzgerald's. Because both of these translations (and his Aeneid!) were done some 50+ years ago (63 for his original Odyssey tl, 50 flat for his Iliad and 40 for his Aeneid) the English itself can be a bit difficult to read and the syntax can get confusing in a lot of places, so despite my personal preferences, I wouldn't recommend it for someone who is looking to experience the Iliad + Odyssey for the very first time.

For an absolute beginner, someone who has tried to read one or both of these epics but couldn't get into it or someone who has a lot of difficulty with concentrating on poetry or long, winding bits of prose, I fully and wholeheartedly recommend Wilson's translation! See, the genius of Emily Wilson's Iliad + Odyssey isn't that she's a woman who's translated these classics, it's that she's a poet who's adapted the greek traditional poetic form of dactylic hexameter into the english traditional poetic form of iambic pentameter. That alone goes a very very long way to making these poems feel more digestible and approachable - iambic pentameter is simply extremely comfortable and natural for native english speakers' brains and the general briskness of her verbiage helps a lot in getting through a lot of the problem books that people usually drop the Iliad or Odyssey in like Book 2 of the Iliad or Book 4 of the Odyssey. I think it's a wonderful starting point that allows people to familiarise themselves with the source text before deciding if they want to dig deeper - personally, researching Wilson's translation choices alone is a massive rabbit hole that is worth getting into LOL.

The happy medium between Fitzgerald's somewhat archaic but precise syntax and Wilson's comfortable meter but occasionally less detailled account is Robert Fagles' Iliad + Odyssey. Now, full disclosure, I detest how Fagles handles epithets in both of his versions, I think they're far too subtle which is something he himself has talked at length about in his translation notes, but for everything else - I'd consider his translations the most well rounded of english adaptations of this text in recent memory. They're accurate but written in plain English, they're descriptive and detailled without sacrificing a comfortable meter and, perhaps most importantly, they're very accessible for native english speaking audiences to approach and interact with. I've annotated my Fagles' volumes of these books to heaven and back because I'm deeply interested in a lot of the translation decisions made, but I also have to specifically compliment his ability to capture nuance in the characters' of these poems in a way I don't often see. He managed to adapt the ambivalence of ancient greek morality in a way I scarcely see and that probably has a hand in why I keep coming back to his translations.

Now, I know this wasn't much of a direct recommendation but as I do not know you personally, dear anon, I can't much make a direct recommendation to a version that would best appeal to your style of reading. Ideally, I'd recommend that you read and enjoy all three! But, presuming that you are a normal person, I suggest picking which one is most applicable for you. I hope this helps! 🥰

okay, i’ve been thinking and i actually believe alastair is my fave tlh character. don’t get me wrong, i adore all of them but alastair?! his growth?! he’s just so lovable, ok? he thinks he’s not, but he is.

i love how he broke out of his shell, how he bloomed.

how his relationship with cordelia became stronger (he’s so soft for her i’m gonna cry), how he admitted that he never wanted cortana, he was just worried for his sister.

how he adores his baby brother so much he always brings him toys and sings for him.

how he became more confident with himself (you don’t understand what him going back to his original hair color did to me, that statement…).

how he went from treating the rest badly, to ignoring them, to helping them, to caring for them…

he has grown so much and he has finally let the people see how good he is. the kind alastair, as his mother said, the one that didn’t have to be on his guard constantly because of his father and because of who he loved.

and with thomas… oh, i love those two SO much. i just wanted to shake alastair and tell him he’s worthy of love too (just like thomas tried multiple times). from those moments in paris i knew they had a special bond.

alastair is devastatingly in love with thomas. he feels so much, cares so much. he just wants the best for him, even when that meant hurting him because he thought he deserved something better than a life with him.

and, ugh, can we please talk about how during the christmas party in chot he was so sure about kissing thomas in front of everyone? he would never let anyone make him feel ashamed anymore, not of his feelings, not of his thomas.

i just love alastair so much. i love how he grew on me because he’s not perfect, but he tries. because he’s scared, but he tries. because he’s been hurt, but he tries.

i didn’t expect him to become someone that i would hold so close to my heart, but here we are. thank you, alastair, for being there for all of us who are growing, who want to be better, who are trying. thank you.

Gally models tiny figures out of soap for a while

Thomas notices and buys him wood blocks and carving tools

Minho passive-aggressively buys him a vacuum because he leaves sawdust everywhere

Gally starts making little figures for Thomas and Minho. He puts them on their beds and doesn't mention anything.

Thomas paints them.

Minho doesn't touch his. Putting them on his bed was too public. Too loud. If he takes them, he'll be admitting he likes them.

Thomas steals Minho's figurines and paints them too.

Gally randomly decides that Minho's bedroom wall deserves a shelf.

Nobody mentions it. Except for Thomas, who complains about Gally's loud hammering sounds.

Thomas puts the (painted) figurines he stole from Minho on the new shelf.

Gally leaves newly sculpted figures on the shelf too.

Minho says nothing. Nobody mentions it at all.

Gally walks in on Minho taking the figurines off the shelf and polishing them. Gally quickly walks back out. Before he's seen.

Gally never seems to run out of wood blocks. Sometimes Minho wanders down into the garage, where Gally does all his carving. Suspiciously, anytime Minho walks into the garage, Gally always wakes up to more wood blocks. Gally doesn't mention it. Neither does Minho.

Thomas interrupts Gally while he's carving to check the quality and sharpness of his current tools and see if he needs any new ones.

Thomas buys higher quality tools for Gally's birthday. Wraps it in bright blue paper. He plans to have Gally unwrap it at dinner but ultimately decides to quietly leave it in the garage.

Gally hates how much Thomas understands him. Hates how Thomas knows what he likes and doesn't. But he hates hating Thomas, so he decides to just appreciate the gesture instead.

Minho, on the other hand, with his quiet wood block-buying, can be hated to the utmost degree. So Gally quietly seethes at the way Minho understands him, and he quietly seethes at the way Minho accommodates his needs.

Minho quietly hates the way Gally understands him, too.

They hate each other. They hate that they hate each other. They hate that they love each other.

Most of all, that they hate that they understand each other. Or maybe they hate that they both know the other's deepest desire is to be understood.

Minho quietly holds Gally's hand on walks. Gally quietly blows hot air onto Minho's hands during the winter. Thomas holds both their hands with a bright grin, and he buys them heating pads when it's cold.

Nobody mentions anything. Except Thomas, who complains about the other two not wearing mittens.
