i think a lot of the tension between langdon and santos comes from their motivations being different, even for behaviors that seem very similar on the surface. for example, they both want to be the best for all of the obvious reasons but, for langdon, i think it’s also because his self-worth is tied to his ability (“if i am not the best then i am less valuable to others and if i’m not valuable, why would anyone want me?”). for santos, though, it’s a self-preservation tactic in a lot of ways (“if i am not the best, i am showing weakness and am more vulnerable to being harmed again.”).
that kind of core difference makes it soooooo difficult for them to interact without triggering each other in an environment where langdon is the authority figure. like they get off on the wrong foot almost immediately because, in langdon’s mind, santos is constantly challenging his competence for no good reason and, in santos’ mind, langdon is trying to control her for no good reason. and it just continues to spiral from there lmao.
but i’m hopeful that we’ll see some growth in understanding between the two of them in s2 or s3 because i think they could learn a lot from one another once they’re able to get past the initial friction. fingers crossed!

It's wild to me that I had heard of the prime Kirk/Spock content in various TOS episodes long before I saw them, but had never heard of what IMO is the shippiest moment of all thus far, in an interestingly O_o goddamn I do not want whatever you two have but you do you?? holy shit though what a moment way.
I'm of course referring to the otherwise rather mid episode "Requiem for Methuselah," in which Kirk has an underwritten love affair with a clueless woman whose various secrets have to be discovered before her inevitable death.
At one point in this relationship, her.......uh, guardian??? sort of???????? had Spock play the piano while she and Kirk waltzed, which (in-story) Spock did perfectly while somehow managing to silently exude even more intensity than usual. After the plot (and her life) were over, we end not with the usual cheerful bit of snark on the bridge that ends most episodes, but with a weary Kirk falling asleep with his head on his arms and Spock hovering not for away. McCoy exposits the last bit of detail and then goes on an unprompted and honestly pretty viciously racist speech about how Spock, unlike Kirk, will never suffer from the joys and travails of love because of his inherent lack of feeling as a Vulcan. The speech is longer than usual and just really mean-spirited as McCoy waxes rhapsodic about all the aspects of passionate true love that Spock will not and cannot experience as a Vulcan before he just leaves.
Spock then turns to look at Kirk, and now just bleeding intensity, takes a few slow, deliberate steps towards the sleeping Kirk, lays his hand against Kirk's cheek and neck, and then very obviously mind melds with the sleeping Kirk while murmuring, "Forget."
Is this healthy respectful behavior that honors Kirk's autonomy? No, obviously. Is it god-tier repressed homoerotic passion between two people who should probably just work their issues out and stop inflicting themselves on anyone else? Yes.
#there are a lot of oddly paced slow physical staging bits in the episode so at first i wasn't sure it was significant that spock is so slow#in his approach to kirk at the end - coming right off the mccoy speech about passionate love it was something else#but i wasn't sure what he was even going to do until he laid his hand against kirk's face and i was just thinking wait WHAT#and then the - wait is he MIND MELDING with SLEEPING KIRK as a response to the accusation that he is racially incapable of passionate love?#and then realized that this episode - in which he admits to one feeling ('envy') culminates in him wiping his rival from kirk's memory#jesus. what the fuck. i'm sorry if i ever thought the kirk/spock fangirls of the last decades were exaggerating#blandly healthy and supportive spirk is out toxic yaoi spirk is in#(also there's a bad episode in which shatner is forced to give a godawful ramble about losing command! i'm losing command!#and kirk is just melting down as he and spock get into an elevator and it's just going up floors as kirk loses his shit#and it would just be unforgivably awful but his fixation on losing authority of his beloved enterprise is stopped by one word from spock#spock literally murmurs 'jim' and kirk just sort of collapses on him and then immediately relaxes and calms down. wild shit)#anghraine babbles#star trek#star trek: the original series#long post#spock#james t kirk#kirk x spock#mccoy critical#i actually love him in most episodes but this was awful and out of nowhere#in terms of the stakes at that point. but the fact that it's this huge rhapsodic speech about the grand passion of LOOOOOVE#not only talking positively but also about the torments of love that spock allegedly can't feel#and it leads /directly/ into spock wiping this woman from kirk's memory????? well. i am not blind to the function it serves. let's say.

little thing i actually love about superbat is that, since Bruce and Clark both have dark hair and blue eyes, fic authors can't just go ''the blue eyed one'' or ''the dark haired one'' the whole fic. It's more effort to come up with distinct descriptors, sure, but also so refreshing to not have to read a whole fic where a character is kinda named the bitch with blue eyes the whole time

James sighed, “That…is a terrible idea.”
“And yet,” Sirius waved his hands around, smug as always, “You don’t deny my brilliance.”
“I deny it,” Peter muttered as he flipped through their potions textbook.
Suddenly, the door opened to the dormitory and Remus slammed it behind him, stalking towards Sirius, “You, are a fucking idiot.”
“You’re on your own mate,” James stage whispered as him and Peter rushed out of the shared space.

hi all! author update for april.
i am slowly working on my wips. dating on airplane mode ch3 is nearly 3k words and a third of the way completed, i've started detail-outlining silver underground ch25, and i'm working on a possible plan to focus on one wip at a time rather than being all over the place.
this month is extremely busy at my company because we have a major conference i have to attend/work pretty much from 6am-10pm at the end of april, and i also am the tactical communications planner for said event. my work best friend is also getting married on the 28th!
it is a very busy month irl, and i'm not posting as much on tumblr right now because i keep comparing my lack of writing to others posting and feel guilty sdkjfsk so i'm focusing on the writing aspect and i will be solely cross-posting and answering messages in my inbox from the time being!
also - happy 2-year anniversary to silver underground (april 7th!)

Gotta be so funny to be Alex Hirsch honestly.
Made a highly influential story in the early 2010s just out of college that's about messy family dynamics, growing up, trust, love, mistakes, healing, fixing things, sacrifice, finding purpose, and being weird. It's deeply impactful to people in general but also to animation period. It's gone on to inspire hundreds if not thousands of creative works. People clamor for a season 3 over a decade later.
But recently like 70% of his fandom lost its mind over the abusive situationship in his spin off book and now there is an old man renaissance in the fandom. The Fandom still loves the main characters of course but there is specifically a none small part dedicated solely to old man introspection and/or porn. Everyone is thirsting after his chain-smoking old man impression who's character is based off of his real life granddad. The main Villian is apparently a David Lynch impression. The main Villian was an inside joke for half the show and wasn't intended to be the big bad till last second.
Alex got to go on stream with J.K. Fucking Simmons and make him say some truly diabolical shit for charity. he even teased toxic old man yaoi for the masses. He voiced half the characters because budget and other reasons. He fought disney censorship through email bc they were worried that implying teens kiss was to risqué. But he also did math so bad that he accidentally implied that there are two generations of preteen parents in the pines family line before Dipper and Mabel. And on top of it he regularly used to gaslight the fandom for fun.
What a life.

I don’t usually write in first person pov. But Lys was adamant that was how the story was going to go. It was HER story and she was going to tell it the way she wanted to.
I usually prefer to write third person pov, especially omniscient so I can really make sure everyone is noticed.
As a reader, I prefer reading third person pov, but don’t mind first person pov. What do you like best? First person? Third? Dual views or single character? Something else?

You know, "The Corbomite Maneuver" isn't remotely my favorite episode of TOS, not in my top 10 or anything, but J and I are into S3 of TNG and I'm starting to really, really, really miss that kind of episode and the ethos that underlies its sense of their fundamental purpose:
KIRK: Intelligence different from ours or superior? SPOCK: Probably both, and if you're asking the logical decision to make— KIRK: No, I'm not. The mission of the Enterprise is to seek out and contact alien life.
-
KIRK: Those of you who have served for long on this vessel have encountered alien lifeforms. You know the greatest danger facing us is ourselves, an irrational fear of the unknown. But there's no such thing as the unknown, only things temporarily hidden, temporarily not understood.
-
KIRK: There are lives at stake. By our standards, alien life, but lives nevertheless. Captain out.
-
KIRK: Mr. Sulu, bring us to within one hundred meters. Ahead slow. SULU: Ahead slow, sir. MCCOY: Jim, don't you think— KIRK: What's the mission of this vessel, doctor? To seek out and contact alien life, and an opportunity to demonstrate what our high-sounding words mean. Any questions?

jayfeather and moleflight toxic yaoi…
Oh wow there's not even anything in the Molejay tag. Is this pair so rare it's not been done yet?
Jayfeather and Moleflight, toxic yaoi, "I named myself after the time I trounced your angelic ass" and "I've personally assigned my entire afterlife to trying to prevent you from causing chaos." They want to kiss each other sooo bad it makes them look stupid. The rituals, they are so intricate.

Quick question for the masses
If I want to write a review for a fanfiction, should I try to ask the author somehow if they're comfortable with it? This is something I always try to do, but there are some authors who straight up just don't respond to comments, so...
Is it a genuinely thoughtful thing to do? I also don't want to be annoying by commenting praise, and then months later commenting again to ask if I can write a review on another platform.
