Survey recruitment; I gave feedback as a later consultant & Tuttle is another Autistic AAC user who was involved in the project from the start. Shares are Definitely Helpful :)
Are you an autistic adult who uses speech and other tools (such as augmentative and alternative communication [AAC]) to communicate?
If you answered yes, please consider participating in this survey at this link:
We are interested in learning about the speech, AAC, and assessment experiences of autistic people who use speech and AAC. We are curious if a modified version of the Communicative Participation Item Bank (CPIB) can be a reliable tool for clinicians to utilize in measuring the internal experiences of speaking autistic people. Regarding assessment, we are interested in understanding how their speech efficacy, or the extent to which one can use speech to completely communicate their intended meaning, was measured and considered in the evaluation process and if the evaluation resulted in a recommendation of an AAC tool.
The survey includes a mix of multiple choice, slider, and written response questions and is estimated to take between 10-20 minutes.
No identifying information will be collected in this survey.
Please reach out with any questions or concerns via email.
We thank you in advance for contributing your insight on this important topic!

Call for participants [please reblog widely!!]
The Autism and Social Communication Lab at Portland State University wants your help to better understand the communication experiences of students on the autism spectrum. As a school-based professional working with autistic students, you are invited to participate in a study examining your work with students, training, and attitudes related to autism and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
We are seeking individuals who:
1) work within a school-based setting (including Early Intervention settings); and
2) work with autistic students.
We are collecting information via a secure online survey. The survey will involve answering questions about your experiences working with autistic students in the areas of 1) professional history related to education and training in the areas of autism and AAC; 3) experience with autistic people and students using AAC; 4) experience implementing AAC with students; 5) attitudes related to communication and communicative choice; and, 6) perspectives on speech.
The survey consists of 36 questions and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete, depending on the individual.  All responses will be confidential and anonymous. Participation in the study is voluntary. You may choose to enter your name into a drawing for one of four (4) $50 gift cards.
To participate in the study, please use the following link: https://portlandstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8Af2zuLvpkSzENM
For further information, please contact Dr. Amy Donaldson at [email protected]
Thank you

Why self-diagnosed autistics are valid
Tumblr media
medical diagnosis can be expensive
humans are the experts on their own minds
family may prevent assessment
diagnosis criteria is a poor checklist of stereotypes
diagnosis criteria ignores gender, race, sexuality, culture & more
medical diagnosis confirms autism, but doesn't create it
discrimination within the medical profession may prevent diagnosis.
Assessment waiting lists often long
medical trauma may make assessment unfeasible

Not going to tag a very icky post that I found but it’s not hard to find. So, here’s your reminder that;
Self suspecting and self diagnosed autistic people are NOT taking resources from diagnosed people. You can’t get autism services without a diagnosis, you can’t go to any therapies really without a diagnosis and so on.
Autism accessories have a abundance supply. So yeah, get those ear defenders, get those sunglasses, get those stim toys.
You aren’t taking anything from diagnosed people.
Stop saying self diagnosed people are taking away from diagnosed people, because they’re not. They have their space in the community. The community is big enough for them.

Actually just curious :]
SYNESTHESIA is characterized as a 'cross wiring' of senses in your brain
for example
tasting words
Numbers and letters having personalities
and having a consistent link between colors and numbers/letters etc. This can be fully visual (seeing aura simmialr to migrains when hearing noises) or internal (imagining bright colors or shape/ number associations to things in your 'minds eye')
Diffrent days of the week having a strong color connection
Alternatively days of the week and calender months having a specific mental layout or 'shape' and days of the week and month having a specific place om this mental map that shifts depending on where you are in time, simmilar to a clock or time table
I'm also curious on how this effects you so you can leave that in the reblogs if your comfortable!
For me personally my synesthesia effects my writing because I'll often mix up letters and numbers ( I write down 4 alot instead of G and vice versa, I also mix up 4 and 7 because they 'look' the same, I'm wondering if this is some sort of dyscalculia though, the same thing happens with A and 8)

Hello everyone!
My name is Amina and I am a BSc Psychology with Honours student at the University of Hertfordshire. I am also the principal researcher of a study that aims to investigate whether judging category relatedness within semantic memory can be influenced by the level of typicality the items have alongside whether high versus low autistic traits have any effect on the performance of different types of processing.
I am currently taking volunteers for this online study. Any adults aged 18 to 65 can volunteer and you do not need an official Autism diagnosis to take part.
In the study, you will be given an item/ definition/ scenario at the top of your screen and will have to decide which of two following words match best to that using your keyboard. After that is completed you will be given the RAADS-14 questionnaire to complete.
It will take roughly 15 minutes to complete. However, a maximum of 30 minutes is given for the entire study to be completed including the information sheet, consent form, debrief sheet, and the “breaks” given (which are just for momentarily resting your eyes and hands), otherwise I cannot use your data. Please note that this study cannot be completed on a mobile phone or tablet, it must be done on a computer/laptop as the keyboard is required for the study’s completion.
You can completed this study at anytime until 23:59 GMT on Friday 1st of March here:
https://research.sc/participant/login/dynamic/0D915D45-8D85-44F9-9B63-376AF0C70573
This study has been approved by the Ethics Committee at the University of Hertfordshire and is also being conducted under the supervision of Dr. Nicholas Shipp.
Your participation is very important for this study and is very much appreciated.
Thank you for your time!
Many Thanks
Amina
EDIT: Study is now no longer taking participants!!! Thank you all who took part and spread the word of my study, it definitely means a lot to me 💟

so i have a question to nd people, do some of you also got this urge to "behave correctly" all the time, like you created this whole personality to please adults but then had your moments were you just got a lil bit excited, perhaps looked kinda crazy, talking too much, moving too much, laughing too much and doing things you don't normally do but actually you do but in your mind, like you look "normal" on the outside but your mind was always super messy full of ideas and stuff happening but tried your best at hiding and now everything's kinda falling(?? so now you have identity crisis or something???

I got paid to write a whole chapter about autism for a psych textbook, I spent months on this shit, doing my best to represent the many voices and needs of this community, trying to be aware of my many blind spots as a mostly speaking, high masking person. Like you have no idea how much effort and focus and research this took, how much care I put into this, because I know how high the stakes are for people less privileged than me:
And then they bring in a neurotypical autism parent with a fucking autism speaks pin to talk to the class.
LIKE. YOU HIRED ME PARTLY BECAUSE IM AUTISTIC. YOU DIDN’T EVEN THINK TO ASK ME BEFORE BRINGING THIS MF IN? DID YOU EVEN READ THE CHAPTER?
I’m so fucking tired of schools and business saying they’re committed to accessibility and diversity and then just continuing to pull this bullshit. It’s 2024. The person you bring in to talk about autism to intro psych students SHOULD AT LEAST BE A FUCKING AUTISTIC PERSON.
NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US.

Hangman says weird shit when he gets nervous
As in, he overshares when he gets nervous and isn’t sure what to say, sometimes it’s just trauma dumping and sometimes it’s sexual and sometimes it’s just… idk weird
He usually has it under control, the pressure of his job is not the thing that gets him, it’s the stress of his life outside of work
Example 1:
Ice: nice to meet you, Jake
Hangman: pleasure’s all mine sir, you have a beautiful house, you know, I used to live in a house just like this before my dad kicked me out and disowned me
Ice:
Hangman: sorry
Example 2:
Coyote: so?
Hangman: so what?
Coyote: did you tell him?
Hangman: I told him that I can’t stand him and that I want to **** his **** and then have him **** me until I can’t breath and hopefully until he can’t speak
Coyote:
Coyote: instead of… I love you?
Hangman: I got nervous ._.
Example 3:
Rooster: are you sure you’re ok?
Hangman: of course, it’s just a funeral, haven’t even seen the man in more than a decade
Rooster: yeah but he’s still your dad, you’re allowed to be upset
Hangman: hmm
Hangman: hey, did you know that like 1% of people get buried alive?
Rooster: I didn’t know that
Rooster: ready to go?
Hangman, taking his hand: hopefully he won’t wake up mid ceremony

I see so much autistic Regulus in ffs but it's always used as a quirky character trait and never really as a disorder with actual consequences. Yes to stimming, but also yes to meltdowns. Yes to apathy, but also yes to sensory hypersensitivity. Yes to special interests, but also yes to crying at every single inconvenience. Yes to rambling, but also yes to processing issues. Yes to difficult communication, but also yes to constant and uninterrupted speaking to himself when he's alone. Yes to saying he's autistic, but also yes to showing it.
