Can't afford art school?
After seeing post like this đ
And this gem đ
As well as countless of others from the AI generator community. Just talking about how "inaccessible art" is, I decided why not show how wrong these guys are while also helping anyone who actually wants to learn.
Here is the first one ART TEACHERS! There are plenty online and in places like youtube.
đşHere is my list:
Proko (Free, mostly teaches anatomy and how to draw people. But does have art talks and teaches the basics.)
Marc Brunet (Free but he does have other classes for a cheap price. Use to work for Blizzard and teaches you everything)
Aaron Rutten (free, tips about art, talks about art programs and the best products for digital art)
BoroCG (free, teaches a verity of art mediums from 3D modeling to digital painting. As well as some tips that can be used across styles)
Jesse J. Jones (free, talks about animating)
Jesus Conde (free, teaches digital painting and has classes in Spanish)
Mohammed Agbadi (free, he gives some advice in some videos and talks about art)
Ross Draws (free, he does have other classes for a good price. Mostly teaching character designs and simple backgrounds.)
SamDoesArts (free, gives good advice and critiques)
Drawfee Show (free, they do give some good advice and great inspiration)
The Art of Aaron Blaise ( useful tips for digital art and animation. Was an animator for Disney. Mostly nature art)
Bobby Chiu ( useful tips and interviews with artist who are in the industry or making a living as artist)
Sinix Design (has some tips on drawing people)
Winged canvas (art school for free on a verity of mediums)
Bob Ross (just a good time, learn how to paint, as well as how too relax when doing art. "there are no mistakes only happy accidents", this channel also provides tips from another artist)
Scott Christian Sava (Inspiration and provides tips and advice)
Pikat (art advice and critiques)
Drawbox (a suggested cheap online art school, made of a community of artist)
Skillshare (A cheap learning site that has art classes ranging from traditional to digital. As well as Animation and tutorials on art programs. All under one price, in the USA it's around $34 a month)
Human anatomy for artist (not a video or teacher but the site is full of awesome refs to practice and get better at anatomy)
Second part BOOKS, I have collected some books that have helped me and might help others.
đHere is my list:
The "how to draw manga" series produced by Graphic-sha. These are for manga artist but they give great advice and information.
"Creating characters with personality" by Tom Bancroft. A great book that can help not just people who draw cartoons but also realistic ones. As it helps you with facial ques and how to make a character interesting.
"Albinus on anatomy" by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Great book to help someone learn basic anatomy.
"Artistic Anatomy" by Dr. Paul Richer and Robert Beverly Hale. A good book if you want to go further in-depth with anatomy.
"Directing the story" by Francis Glebas. A good book if you want to Story board or make comics.
"Animal Anatomy for Artists" by Eliot Goldfinger. A good book for if you want to draw animals or creatures.
"Constructive Anatomy: with almost 500 illustrations" by George B. Bridgman. A great book to help you block out shadows in your figures and see them in a more 3 diamantine way.
"Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and expand" by Burne Hogarth. A book that shows how to block out shapes and easily understand what you are looking out. When it comes to human subjects.
"An Atlas of animal anatomy for artist" by W. Ellenberger and H. Dittrich and H. Baum. This is another good one for people who want to draw animals or creatures.
Etherington Brothers, they make books and have a free blog with art tips.
đAs for Supplies, I recommend starting out cheap, buying Pencils and art paper at dollar tree or 5 below. If you want to go fancy Michaels is always a good place for traditional supplies. They also get in some good sales and discounts. For digital art, I recommend not starting with a screen art drawing tablet as they are usually more expensive.
For the Best art Tablet I recommend either Xp-pen, Bamboo or Huion. Some can range from about 40$ to the thousands.
đťAs for art programs here is a list of Free to pay.
Clip Studio paint ( you can choose to pay once or sub and get updates. Galaxy, Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android, or Chromebook device. )
Procreate ( pay once for $9.99 usd, IPAD & IPHONE ONLY)
Blender (for 3D modules/sculpting, animation and more. Free)
PaintTool SAI (pay but has a 31 day free trail)
Krita (Free)
mypaint (free)
FireAlpaca (free)
Aseprite ($19.99 usd but has a free trail, for pixel art Windows & macOS)
Drawpile (free and for if you want to draw with others)
IbisPaint (free, phone app ONLY)
Medibang (free, IPAD, Android and PC)
NOTE: Some of these can work on almost any computer like Clip and Sai but others will require a bit stronger computer like Blender. Please check their sites for if your computer is compatible.
So do with this information as you will but as you can tell there are ways to learn how to become an artist, without breaking the bank. The only thing that might be stopping YOU from using any of these things, is YOU.
I have made time to learn to draw and many artist have too. Either in-between working two jobs or taking care of your family and a job or regular school and chores. YOU just have to take the time or use some time management, it really doesn't take long to practice for like an hour or less. YOU also don't have to do it every day, just once or three times a week is fine.
Hope this was helpful and have a great day.
"also apologies for any spelling or grammar errors, I have Dyslexia and it makes my brain go XP when it comes to speech or writing"

Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F 1985
"Axel F" is an electronic instrumental track by German musician Harold Faltermeyer. It served as the theme song for the 1984 film Beverly Hills Cop, its eponymous character (as portrayed by Eddie Murphy) and the film franchise it is based from, which became an international number-one hit in 1985. The track reached number one in Ireland as well as on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. Additionally, it was a number two hit in Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the UK, and West Germany. In addition to the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack, the song appears on Faltermeyer's 1988 album Harold F. as a bonus track.
Faltermeyer recorded the tune using five instruments: a Roland Jupiter-8 provided the distinctive saw lead, a Moog modular synthesizer 15 provided the bass, a Roland JX-3P provided chord stab brasses, a Yamaha DX7 was used for the marimba sound, and a LinnDrum was used for drum programming. All instruments were played by Faltermeyer. According to Faltermeyer, the initial reaction to his first presentation of the track to the film's producers and director did not result in an immediate approval; it was not until director Martin Brest voiced his approval that the producers showed enthusiasm. A music video was produced to promote the single, directed by Faltermeyer.
"Axel F" has been sampled in many songs, including "Champion" by South Korean singer Psy. In 2005, Crazy Frog's version became a summer hit. It topped the charts in the UK, with some of the best weekly sales of the year, and remained at the top of the UK Singles Chart for four weeks to become Britain's third-best-selling single of 2005, outselling and outperforming the original version. It also reached number 1 in Australia, the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Denmark, New Zealand, Norway, Ukraine, Spain, and Sweden. In France, the song stayed at number 1 for thirteen weeks, only to be dethroned by Crazy Frog's second single, "Popcorn". This was only the second time that an artist had ever dethroned themself in that country. It peaked at number 3 on the US Digital Sales chart, and number 2 on the US Adult Contemporary Top 20. In 2024, as part of a tribute to celebrate the release of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the Crazy Frog Youtube Channel made a special crossover music video with Netflix, featuring scenes from the movie, but re-edited to feature Crazy Frog in them, being chased by the Beverly Hills Police and Axel Foley.
"Axel F" received a total of 88,3% yes votes!

Dc x DP Prompt #8: Best Friendâs Brother
Preface: this prompt can be used with different characters but Iâm writing it as Dead on Main bc thatâs my favorite. Also the colleges I mention are real colleges from the DCU
~~~
Danny Fenton was 18 when he moved to Gotham for college.
It was the only place with a half decent engineering program that would take a kid with his record; drop in grades, unexplained absences, missing class, a disciplinary record, etc. Plus there was a decent saturation of both magic and ectoplasm in Gothamâs air. After he got accepted he decided to tell his parents he was Phantom. They reacted surprisingly well all things considered. They were horrified to learn theyâd been hunting their son but it quickly turned into acceptance to listen to what he had to tell them. Now they turned their obsession from hunting ghosts to learning more about ghost more humanely. He also managed to get his former rouges to agree to call off any major shenanigans in favor of less destructive outlets. (He got Ember a TikTok and a YouTube channel, he set up a drag racing circuit in the realms for Johnny and Kitty, let Technus enter the internet as long as he stayed within Amityâs grid or help Ember manage her stuff, allowed Desiree grant wishes for Make a Wish Foundation kids so long as she didnât horribly twist them, etc.)
Now with the town not at constant risk of danger and his parents agreeing to really handle any rouge ghosts, Danny could leave Amity with a clear conscience. His friends were also growing up and heading to their own colleges. Tucker was heading to Ivy University in New England, which rivaled MIT in terms technological prestige, and Sam decided on Vandermeer University in Pittsburg, which had a reputation for being a very liberal, anti-authority campus. Although their trio would be spread out, Danny found comfort in the fact that theyâd all moved from the Midwest to the Northeast.
With promises to stay in touch a visit. Danny got set up in GCUâs dorms, ready to move into the next chapter of his life.
~
Danny Fenton was 20 when Tim Drake (age 19 but nearing 20) officially became one of his best friends.
They had been introduced to each other by their mutual friend Sebastian Ives for a new Warlocks and Warriors campaign. Their friendship extended beyond WnW when they ended up on the same Applied Physics and Mechanics class. It was cemented when they got pair up for a project in class and had to spend lots of time around each other.
Danny didnât mind that Tim tended to be a bit flaky and Tim didnât mind that Danny was possibly not 100% human. They didnât ask each other too many questions about that stuff. They knew the other had something odd about him and that was fine with them. It was nice to have a causal friend they could be normal with, without being questioned about their more peculiar behaviors.
They officially became best friends when the built a Rube Goldberg machine with a working trebuchet within an hour of the three they had to complete it for their Applied Phys-Mech final. Danny introduced Tim to Sam, Tucker and Jazz. Tim introduced him to Steph, Tam, and Cass. They texted and hung out fairly often. They truly did consider each other one their best friends.
~
Danny Fenton is 22 when he meets Timâs family.
Timâs 21st birthday is coming up and he has plans with his family the day of and is going out with his friends, including a couple from out of town, that night. They want to take him out for his first drink and itâs fortunate timing since itâs the weekend so nobody has to worry about classes. Everyone who was going was already informed that Tim would be spending most of the day with his family before Steph and Cass would bring to the club everyone was meeting up at. Which is why itâs purely a coincidence when he runs into them at BatBurger during the lunch rush.
Danny had just picked up the part-time job to earn a little extra cash to pay for his hobbies. Tim new about it but didnât know the exact location he worked. Thatâs why they were both presently surprised when they heard each others voices in the drive through. When they pulled up to window Danny saw his friend leaning over a tired looking black-haired man, trying to stick his head out of the drivers window to give Danny a maniacal grin.
He quickly introduced the other passengers of the car as his dad, Bruce, and three of his brothers Dick, Jason, and Duke. He mentioned he had a fourth brother, Damian, who was still at home. Danny couldnât really see everyone all that well on account of they were inside a car but he happily greeted them as well. They laughed and Danny wished Tim a happy birthday saying heâd see him at his celebration later tonight before handing them their food. He could the rowdy boys ribbing their brother as the car drove away and Danny resumed his work.
That incident seemed to have opened a gate because now Tim felt more comfortable inviting him over when his brothers were still around the house. He occasionally talked about his family more and Danny returned the favor letting snippets of his own family spill a little more. Occasionally, heâd see Timâs family outside of his interactions with Tim.
Heâd run into Damian, and sometimes Bruce or Dick was with him, at the museum or in the park while the younger had been walking his dog and stopped to say hi a couple of times. He chatted with Dick a couple of times when they were both in line to get coffee at a cafe. He saw Duke on a college tour once and waved at him.
The family member he probably saw the most other that Tim (and by extension Cass) was actually Jason. Heâd ended up ditching BatBurger to get some more practical experience at an apprenticeship at the auto shop Jason went to to get his motorcycle serviced. The two of them got along pretty well and would often make conversation when Jason was waiting on his bike to be ready or to get his bill.
At first is was small talk about little things like how he and Tim were doing in class or how their days were going but they soon grew to have genuine interests in each other. Jason let Danny talk about space and mechanics and even gave his own thoughts sometimes, once helping Danny realize he was over complicating the circuit board of the device he was building. In return Danny let Jason ramble to him about literature, even taking the initiative to read a book Jason mentioned so he could talk to him about it better. Their conversation tended to be on the briefer side but were always enjoyable to both parties.
Danny actually liked being around Jason a lot but didnât really bring that fact up a lot around Tim as it didnât seem necessary. Tim was pretty glad that Danny got along with his family but he preferred to keep them in separate places in his mind. Danny knew and respected that, only really mentioning that heâd seen them recently and that theyâd told him to say hi on their behalf (or die in Damianâs case occasionally).
~
Tim Drake was 22 when he came to a horrific realization.
Well, perhaps horrific was a bit of an exaggeration. Tim wasnât necessarily horrified by the revelation. In all honesty he didnât know how to feel. He felt an odd mixture of protectiveness, possessiveness, confusion, and optimism(?).
You see, Tim and Danny had been hanging out in the campus center, studying and goofing off when he got a text from Jason saying he was coming to pick him up for family dinner at the manor since he was closest and Dick was busy picking up Duke and Damian from their after school clubs.
âWhatâs up?â Danny asked him curiously.
Tim set his phone on the table and started putting his stuff away. âMy brother is coming to pick me up for family dinner so I gotta head out soon.â
âAh well I should probably get going too. Tell Dick I said hi.â
âActually, itâs Jason. Dick is picking up Duke and Damian,â he said shoving his textbook into his bag.
âOh? Thatâs nice of him. Hey do you wanna just head out together?â Danny asked, fidgeting with his hoodie strings.
Tim noticed a slight strain in Dannyâs voice at the mention of Jason but didnât comment. He just nodded his head sure and walked outside with Danny. They got out to the street when Tim realized heâd left his phone in the library. He faced palmed and asked Danny if he could hold his stuff so it wouldnât slow him down as he ran back to the campus center to get his phone. Danny agreed to and hold his stuff and wait for Jason while Tim went back.
After getting his phone Tim started heading back to where he left Danny when he saw that Jason had arrived that Jason had arrived and was talking to Danny. He was about to call out to them when he noticed several things in quick succession. Danny was fidgeting with his hoodie, something he tended to do when nervous. The tips of Dannyâs ears were a light shade of pink (it isnât cold out yet?). Danny looked deeply absorbed in his conversation with Jason in a way that reminded Tim of how he talked about space. And Jason seemed just as absorbed in the conversation as well.
The gears in Timâs head went into overdrive and he realized âAh- Danny has a crush on Jasonâ. His eyes widened as his head whipped around to examine Jason again. He saw a look of genuine fondness in his eyes. Thus Tim was confronted with the aforementioned horrific realization and complicated feelings. Tim didnât know whether to laugh, cry, or both.
âMy dumbass best friend has a crush on my brother. And worse(?), my idiot brother returns those feelings.â
How to Actually Learn a Language (Without Wasting Time)
Polyglots will do anything to sell you something, so hereâs the fastest and most basic technique based on my research.
â
Step 1 â Getting the Absolute Basics In
This is where most people already get lost. If you search social media for how to start, the advice isnât necessarily bad, but it often makes you dependent on a single resource, usually an app that will eventually try to charge you. Duolingo, for example, has turned into a mega-corporation that perfected gamification to keep you on the app.
Remember: free apps make money by keeping you on their platform, not by helping you become fluent.
At this stage, the goal is not to gain conversational skills but to avoid overwhelming yourself and get a feel for what youâre actually getting into. All my recommended resources are free because I believe learning a language should be a basic right. I wouldnât advise spending any money until youâre sure youâll stick with it. Otherwise, it can turn into a toxic âbut I paid for this, so I have to keep goingâ mindset that drains all the fun out of learning.
⢠Language Transfer â Highly recommended for Spanish, Arabic, Turkish, German, Greek, Italian, Swahili, and French.
⢠Textbooks â Simply search for [language] textbook PDF, or check LibGen and the Internet Archive. Donât overthink which book to chooseâit doesnât matter much.
⢠Podcasts â Coffee Break is a solid choice for many languages.
⢠YouTube Channels â Join r/Learn[language] on Reddit and find recommendations.
â
Step 2 â The 20/80 Principle
The idea is that 20% of words make up 80% of everyday speech.
What youâre going to do:
Search âMost common words [language] PDFâ.
This list is now your best friend
For flashcards, I highly recommend AnkiPro. It lets you import pre-made lists for Anki/Quizlet and has an archive where youâll definitely find the most common words. But it lacks audio. The real Anki program has it, but only on PC (unless youâre willing to pay $30 for the mobile app). Use AnkiPro for nowâweâll come back to repeating phrases later. In the meantime, find a YouTube video with the most common words pronounced, or use Google Translate for audio.
(Knowt is a free alternative for Quizlet if you prefer that)
These lists will spare you from learning unnecessary vocabulary at this stage. Spaced repetition (which Anki uses) can take longer, but itâs worth it because you want these words to stick. Anki will only introduce a small number of new words per day. Once you start new words, write phrases using them. Doesnât matter if theyâre random just try to use them.
â
Step 3 â The First Breakup With the Language
This isnât really a step, but I have to mention it. For me (and for other language learners Iâve talked to) this is where motivation crashes.
The dopamine rush is over. Your ego boost is gone. Youâre stuck understanding just enough to notice how much you donât understand, and topics are getting more complex. Everything feels overwhelming, and motivation drops.
This is normal. You have to push through it.
Iâll write a separate post on how I manage this phase, but for now:
⢠Take a step back and make sure you understand the basics.
⢠Find something that keeps you motivated.
⢠Consistency is key. Even if itâs just five minutes a day, do it. (Edit: You can search online for inspiration on scheduled plans. I found one that organizes language exercises into different categories based on how much time you have each day, which seems helpful. https://www.reddit.com/r/languagelearning/s/sSGUtORurM
Personally, I used AI to create a weekly plan kind of as a last resort before giving up on the language, but try looking for pre-made ones first.)
I personally enjoyed story learning during this phase. And donât forget the frequency lists are still your best friend. For story learning check out Olly Richards books!
â
Step 4 â Immersion
Your brain needs active and passive immersion. The earlier steps were mostly active, and now youâll start the fun part.
How to Immerse Yourself:
1. Join some kind of community.
⢠I enjoy Reddit/ r/lean[Language]. Do this in your target language, but also in the language you already speak. Post that youâre looking for a chat partner in your target language. The most people are nice, and the mean ones will just ghost you anyway.
2. Watch shows.
⢠Subtitles only in your target language or drop English subtitles ASAP.
3. Listen to podcasts.
4. Read
I personally dislike media made for kids (except on low-energy days). For real immersion, pick something for adults.
5. Translate, write, and speak.
Before this, you wrote simple sentences using vocabulary. Now, put them to work:
⢠Translate texts.
⢠Keep a diary.
⢠Write short stories.
⢠Complain about the language in the language.
It doesnât matter, just use it.
â
Step 5 â Speaking
Start speaking earlier than you think youâre ready. Trust me. This is probably where most people disagree with me. I do think you should start by focusing on input, but the importance of output isnât talked about enough.
Now, the real Anki (or any program with phrases + audio) comes into play. At lower levels, it doesnât make sense to just start talking, since you wouldnât even be able to recognize your mistakes. Hereâs what youâll do:
1. Repeat phrases out loud.
2. Record yourself speaking.
3. Compare your recording to the original audio and adjust your pronunciation.
If itâs a tonal language (or if you struggle with accents), start this even earlier.
Other Speaking Strategies:
⢠Shadowing â Repeat after native speakers.
⢠Reading aloud â Your own texts, books, anything.
⢠Talking to yourself.
⢠Talking to natives (if youâre brave).
Iâm not here to fix social anxiety, but I am here to help with language learning, so just speak.
â
Final Thoughts
⢠These steps overlap, and thatâs fine.
⢠This is supposed to be fun. Learning just because youâre âtoo deep inâ or because of school wonât cut it.
⢠If youâre lost, take a step back.
⢠Iâm not a professional. I just think a straight answer is way too hard to find.
â
If you have anything to add, feel free to share.
a/n: does the smut suck? yes probably but itâs okay đ
âyou have a date? how much did you pay him?â matt asks you, a snark evident in his tone. you roll your eyes at his comment. âguys find me very likable, thank you very much.â you retort. âoh iâm sure.â he scoffs. âcan you just shut the hell up?â you snap, looking into the eyes of the boy youâve hated since freshman year.
you met the triplets when you moved to boston in the ninth grade. you shared a class with nick, and you two quickly hit it off. he then introduced you to his two brothers, matt and chris. chris was super sweet and welcoming towards you, but matt was the complete opposite. he barely spoke to you, and when he did, it was to make some snide remark. at first, you let it slide, thinking he was just uncomfortable around new people, but the mean comments never subsided, so one day, you snapped back at him, much to his surprise. thus began the endless fighting and screaming matches between the both of you. it got so bad that nick and chris wouldnât allow you two alone in the same room out of fear that you might kill each other. you two found ways to argue about anything, even things as stupid as what the best soda is.
although you hate matt with every fiber in your being, you still love nick and chris as if they were your own brothers, and they obviously felt the same. when their youtube channel first blew up, you were always by their side to support them. eventually, they decided they were going to move to los angeles, and they asked you to go with them. you immediately accepted because the course you wanted to study in college had great programs in los angeles.
youâre currently in the tripletsâ apartment, telling them about the most recent development in your life: you got a date. ây/n, just ignore matt.â nick interrupts yours and mattâs squabble. âso, whatâs his name? how did you meet him?â nick asks excitedly. âwell, his nameâs blake and we met at the coffee shop on campus.â you smile. matt rolls his eyes. âblake? the guy sounds like a douchebag.â âand you would know all about douchebags wouldnât you?â you ask with a false sweetness in your voice. âwhat the hell is that supposed to mean? you saying iâm a douchebag?â matt narrows his eyes at you. âif the shoe fits.â you shrug. âokay can you guys not for like two seconds?â chris asks. you raise your hands up in surrender, âfine but he started it.â âsure blame me for everything.â matt says sarcastically. âfuck off.â you reply. âguys seriously, stop.â nick tells you sternly. âanyway where are you and blake going?â chris asks, trying to lessen the tension between you and matt. âweâre going to this restaurant down the street from my apartment. itâs pretty nice actually.â you tell him, smiling slightly. you then stand up and grab your car keys. âiâm gonna go get ready, and iâll tell you guys all about it after.â âyou better!â nick yells out after you as you walk out the door towards your car.
nick watches you leave, then turns to matt, âwe need to talk.â matt raises an eyebrow, âokayâŚâ he says hesitantly, setting down his phone. âwhat the fuck is up with you and y/n?â âwhat do you mean?â matt asks. âyou two have been at each otherâs throats for years! itâs so exhausting watching you two constantly fight over dumb shit!â nick yells at him. âwhat about her? why is she not included in this conversation?â he retorts. âbecause you started this shit! you were awful to her when you first met! this whole situation could have been avoided if you were man enough to tell her you like her!â mattâs taken aback by nickâs outburst. âtell her what?â he asks, hoping he heard his brother wrong. âcome on matt, itâs obvious that you like her.â nick deadpans. âyouâre kidding right? sheâs disgusting, and not to mention, a total bitch. how you guys tolerate her shit, iâll never know, but i sure as hell wonât.â matt rants. âokay matt, whatever you need to tell yourself.â chris adds, rolling his eyes. âyou agree with nick? seriously?â matt turns to the youngest triplet. chris just shrugs, âi mean, yeah. i might be an idiot, but even i can tell that you like her.â matt scoffs, âfuck you guys. iâm going for a drive. iâll be back later.â he stands up and grabs his keys. he then walks out the front door, making sure to slam it shut.
matt gets into his car and begins to drive, not knowing where to go. during his drive, thoughts of you begin to invade mattâs head. there is absolutely no way he likes you. youâre annoying, youâre stubborn, and youâre just so insufferable to be around. sure, youâre conventionally attractive, but that doesnât mean anything, it actually pisses matt off more because he doesnât understand how such a pretty face could have such an awful personality paired with it.
after driving for a while, an idea pops into mattâs head. matt knows you well enough to know which restaurant you would go to because it was always one of your favorites. he begins to drive that way and plots what heâs going to do once he gets there. after a few moments of contemplating, he decides to just sit a couple of tables away from you and your date, just to make you uncomfortable and on edge.
he arrives at the restaurant and walks in through the large glass doors at the front of the building. the moment he walks in, he can spot you and blake in the back. youâre laughing at something he said, and an unfamiliar feeling began to pool in the pit of mattâs stomach. his thoughts are cut off by the hostess coming up to the stand, âhow many?â she asks. âumm just one, and is there any way i can get a table back there?â he points to where youâre sitting. âof course. follow me.â she smiles as she begins to walk towards the your table, matt following close behind. âhere you are, sir.â the hostess sets the menu down on the table before walking away. he sits down and looks at the menu, waiting for you to notice his presence.
as youâre talking to blake, you notice a familiar head of hair out of the corner of your eye. you look over an see matt sitting diagonally across from your table. your eyes widen when your eyes meet his. what the fuck is he doing here? you try your best to ignore him, but you can see him continuously glancing at you. blake notices you looking over to your right. âare you okay, y/n? is something wrong?â he asks. your eyes snap back to his. âno i thought i saw something, but i didnât.â blake just shrugs and continues talking. you try to listen to his words, but you canât. your mind constantly drifts back to the brown-haired boy sitting to your right.
after a couple hours, and some very awkward glances to matt, your date finally ends. you and blake bid each other goodnight before you walk back to your car. you see matt walking to his own car and you send him with a death glare, to which he just responds with a cocky smile. you wait for him to drive out of the parking lot, and once he does, you follow him home, wanting answers as to why he thought it was a good idea to crash your date.
as he pulls into his garage, you park on the street. you turn your engine off and get out of the car, storming through the front door, where you see matt standing in the kitchen. you walk over to him and slam your purse down on the counter.
âwhy do you feel the need to ruin every good thing that comes my way? what do you have to gain from that?â you ask matt frustratedly. âi donât ruin every good thing. i just wanted to make sure heâs good for you.â he replies nonchalantly. âthatâs not for you to decide matthew!â you yell, moving closer to him. ây/n, you just need to trust me.â his calmness is pissing you off even more. âbut i donât trust you! all youâve done since we met is berate me and talk shit about me! how can i trust your words when i canât even trust you?!â you begin to wave your arms frantically. âlook,â he begins, âi know guys like that and i just-â âguys like what matt? guys like you?â you ask accusingly. âno. guys that will treat a girl right until they get into her pants and then leave once they get what they want.â you scoff at his words. who does he think he is? âyou donât know what youâre talking about. did he say something to make you believe heâs like that?â matt averts his gaze to the floor. âno, but i have a feeling.â you laugh, not believing the words that are leaving his mouth. âa feeling? so you just made it up.â he looks back up at you. âgod, i didnât make it up y/n! stop being so naive and open your fucking eyes!â matt begins to raise his voice. âyou are such a fucking asshole! you have no right to stick your nose in my love life! just because no one wants you doesnât mean you get project that onto me!â you yell in his face, seething with rage. mattâs face turns cold, his eyes boring into yours with a look you canât make out. he remains silent for a few seconds. âwhat no snarky comment? did i hit a sore spot? itâs so pathetic that youâre so insecure that you feel the need to-â youâre cut off by a pair of lips smashing against yours. your eyes widen and you can feel yourself almost melting into the kiss before you realize who it is youâre kissing. you quickly shove him backwards, and matt stumbles a little. you look into his eyes, the both of you saying nothing. you donât know what comes over you, but before you can think it through, you take a step forward, grab the back of his neck, and press your lips against mattâs once again. the kiss is rough, teeth and tongues clashing together.Â
mattâs kisses begin to fall from your lips to your neck, biting and sucking as he goes further and further down. âmattâ you moan breathlessly. âwhat is it baby?â he asks in a husky voice and you could cum from just the sound of his voice. âwe should go to your room.â you say between small moans. you can feel him nod against the crook of your neck as he put his hand under your ass to pick you up. you immediately wrap your legs around his waist as he begins to walk towards his room. you get into his room and he sits down on the edge of his bed, so now youâre in his lap.
matt removes his head from your collarbone and he finds your lips again. you subconsciously begin to move your hips against his, a soft groan leaving his lips and you can feel yourself clench at the noise. mattâs hands slowly trail up your back and you can feel his right hand grip your hair. he gives it a quick but firm tug, pulling your head back which gives him the opportunity to attack your jawline. âmatt please.â you breathe out, needing his touch. âwhat do you want, baby?â he asks, knowing damn well what you want. âi need you.â he looks up at you with a smirk on his face. âyeah? then show me how bad you need me.â you feel his grip on you relax slightly, so you get off his lap and drop to your knees. your eyes immediately find the large tent in his sweats. you can feel your mouth water with desire.
you grab his dick through his pants and matt lets out a light gasp. âdonât tease me baby.â you bite your lip and tug his sweatpants down to his thighs, his extremely hard dick slapping against his stomach. you wrap your hand around his base and begin to stroke him up and down. you then bring your lip to his tip, giving it a few kitten licks. mattâs hand finds your hair and forces himself down your throat. you feel your eyes begin to water as you find your rhythm. you continue to bob your head up and down and pump what you canât fit in your mouth. âfuckkkâ matt moans, his hand tightly gripping your hair. âiâm gonna cum baby.â you quicken your pace and you can feel your cunt dripping, making a mess between your thighs. mattâs groans become louder and louder as he feels himself getting closer. his dick twitches in your mouth and you still your movements, feeling his thick ropes of cum hitting the back of your throat. you swallow every drop before pulling off him, both of you panting and trying to catch your breath.
âfuck that was so good.â he praises you as he grabs your hands and leads you back onto the bed. he flips the two of you around so now heâs on top of you. âyouâre such a good girl for me.â he says before he kisses you again. he bites your bottom lip before slipping his tongue into your mouth. you can feel his dick sliding up and down your clothed cunt. âplease fuck me matt.â you whine against his lips. âpatience baby.â he demands. his hands find the waistband of your pants, yanking them down so your bottom half is only covered by your thin panties. he looks down and sees the wet patch that covers the bottom of them. âholy fuck youâre soaked. you really liked sucking me off that much, huh?â he then gets up on his knees and takes his shirt off, revealing his toned stomach, and you can somehow feel yourself become wetter. âhow bad do you want me?â he asks you cockily. âso bad matty. please fuck me.â he chuckles, âso needy.â he then lines himself up to your leaking hole, swiping his tip against your clit a few times before sliding himself inside you slowly. you let out a loud moan and he covers your mouth. âshhh baby. we donât want nick or chris to hear how good iâm making feel do we?â you shake your head as he continues to rut his hips into yours. he removes his hand from your mouth and it soon finds its place on your throat. âfuck youâre so fucking tight. oh my god.â he throws his head back in pleasure as you moan out his name. âyouâre such a little slut for me arenât you? you like it when i fuck you like this?â he smirks down at you, admiring the way your jaw was slack and your eyes rolled back. he tightens his grip around your neck as a warning, âanswer me or iâll stop.â âfuck yes matt i love it.â you moan out. he takes his hand off your neck and trails it down to your clit. he begins to rub it in small, tight circles and you can feel the coil in your stomach begin to form.
âfuck baby youâre gonna make me cum soon.â he picks up his pace, going harder as his hand rubs your clit faster. you can feel yourself begin to clench around him, matt starting to let out broken moans at the sensation. âyou gonna cum baby?â you nod, on the verge of cumming around him. âgive it to me baby. cum on my dick.â he urges. at his words, you let go, letting out a loud and long moan as you release around his dick. mattâs pace begins to falter as he feels himself about to fall apart too. âwhere do you want it baby?â âinside me please.â you beg. he twitches inside of you and you can feel him cumming inside you, painting your swollen walls white as he lets out a groan of your name. he stills inside you for a few seconds before pulling out. he gets up from the bed and walks to his bathroom. you feel the sink run and turn off and he returns to the bed with a damp towel. he begins to clean you up a bit before tossing the towel to the side. he crawls towards you and lies down next you, pulling you into his arms.
you both lie in his bed for a few more minutes before you speak up. âthis canât happen again.â matt turns to look at you, âwhy not?â he questions. âi donât want to hurt blake. heâs a good guy.â matt scoffs. âsure he is.â he says, sarcasm evident in his tone. âyou donât even know him matt.â you try to reason. âi donât need to know the guy to know heâs an asshole. his nameâs blake, and that says enough.â you roll your eyes at his childish behavior. âokay matt whatever.â you pull the covers off your body and you begin to put your clothes back on. matt grabs your arms and spins you around to face him. he looks into your eyes for a few moments before crashing his lips against yours. you want to pull away, but you canât. the kiss becomes more and more heated as he backs you up until youâre both lying on the bed with him on top of you. âthis is the last time.â you demand, knowing thatâs probably a lie. âno itâs not.â he says against your lips as he begins to trail kisses down your neck.
weeks pass by, and you and matt are still hooking up. because of this, youâve become more tolerant towards each other. you donât necessarily like one another, but you can at least go a day without arguing. nick and chris begin to notice the change in dynamic between the both of you. they donât ask questions because theyâre just happy you all can hang out without the two of them being caught in the middle of one of your petty arguments.
much to mattâs dismay however, blake is still in the picture. you havenât become official with him yet, but you both have gone on many more dates and even kissed a few times. of course, you felt bad for lying to blake, but what are you supposed to do? you just canât escape matt. youâre a moth to his flame. youâve come so close to breaking it off with matt, but each time you fail, somehow always ending up naked in his bed.
this is one of those times. you came over to the boysâ apartment to break it off with matt, but of course, you couldnât. instead, youâre pinned against the wall of his bedroom. âmatt we canât keep doing this.â you breathe out against his lips. âdoing what?â he asks, backing away and raising one eyebrow. âhating each other in public and fucking in private. i canât do that to blake.â you try to reason with him, but matt simply rolls his eyes. âthen just end things with him. i told you he isnât good for you.â âheâs a good guy, matt.â you reply. matt takes a step closer to you, âwell, if heâs such a good guy, then why are you here? why arenât you with him?â he asks, knowing the answer. you look down and shake your head, âi donât know. i shouldnât be here. i should go.â you grab your purse from the counter and swing it over your shoulder, but before you can walk towards the door, matt grabs your wrist. âwait, donât go.â you turn towards him, âwhy not?â thereâs a few seconds of silence before matt answers your question. âi donât want you to.â âokay.â you concede.
about a week later, you get a text from blake, asking you to go over to his apartment. you get into your car and drive to his place. you get out and walk up to his door, knocking twice. he open the door with a smile on his face, and it fills you with guilt. he invites you in and sits you down on his couch. âso i invited you here because i wanted to ask you something.â he begins. you nod, nervous for what heâs about to say. âi wanted to know if you would be my girlfriend.â he asks hopefully. you sigh softly and look down. you canât hold it in any longer. you canât keep lying to the poor guy. âlook, youâre an amazing guy, donât get me wrong, but i canâtâ you tell him. his smile drops instantly. âoh. can i ask why. i thought we were doing good.â âiâm just not ready to be in a serious relationship. i thought i was, but now i know iâm not.â itâs not totally a lie. youâre not ready for a relationship with someone that isnât matt. âokay i understand.â he says sadly. âi think i should leave. iâm so sorry blake, but i know youâll find someone as great as you are.â you smile to try and lift the mood. he just nods while staring at the ground. you stand up from his couch and walk out the door, wracked with guilt.
you get in your car and drive to the tripletsâ apartment, needing to talk to matt. you have to tell him how you feel. you arrive at their apartment and place your car in park. you walk up to the door and knock. you wait for a few seconds before the door opens, revealing matt. âhi.â you break the silence. âwhatâs up? you need something?â he inquires. âi actually need to talk to you.â you can feel butterflies in your stomach as you rock back and forth on your feet. âummm okay come in.â he motions for you to enter the apartment. you walk inside and matt closes the door behind you. you both stand in the living room and you set your keys and phone down on their counter. he stands there, waiting for you to speak.
âi broke up with himâ you break the silence. âwhat? why?â matt questions, his head immediately perking up. âyou were right. he wasnât good for me.â he scoffs, âwell no shit. what does that have to do with me?â âi also broke up with him because i realized something.â are you really about to do this? are you really about to confess your feelings to the boy youâve hated for years? matt gives you a look, telling you to go on. âi know weâve always hated each other, but since we started sleeping together, i realized that i donât want blake. i want you, and not just in a sexual way. i want to actually be with you.â you take a deep breath you didnât know you were holding, waiting anxiously for his response, but he says nothing. âmatt? please say something.â matt looks down at the floor and shakes his head slightly. âi canât, y/n.â he says softly. âcanât what?â youâre confused now. what the hell does that mean? âi canât be with you.â your heart drops. âwhy not?â you ask. âi⌠i just canât.â youâre start to become irritated at his words. âwhat canât you do matt?!â âi canât give you what you want. you want to date and do couple-y stuff and i canât do that.â his gaze remains on the floor. âso iâm good enough to fuck, but not good enough to date?â you ask condescendingly. âthatâs not what iâm saying, i just-â âyou just what matt?! what is so awful about being in a relationship?!â you begin to yell. âi donât do relationships! the fact that youâre whining and screaming about it is the reason i donât! youâre being fucking dramatic and iâm sick of it! weâre not dating and weâre never going to so just accept it and stop being so fucking clingy!â he yells back at you. your jaw drops to the floor at his words. âfuck you matthew. donât text me again.â you walk towards the front door, making sure to bump his shoulder on the way out. you open the door and slam it shut, shaking the walls of the apartment.
hearing the commotion, chris and nick walk downstairs into the living room. âwhat the hell happened?â nick asks. ânothing happened. sheâs just being a bitch as usual.â matt replies, rubbing his temples. âwhat did you say to her?â nick sighs, knowing youâd never react that way unless matt said something really fucked up. âi donât wanna talk about it.â nick scoffs. âwell too bad. if i just lost my best friend because of you then weâre gonna talk about it.â nick and chris drag matt over to the couch and sit down. matt sighs and begins to explain everything that happened between the two of you. âwhy would you say something like that to her?â chris asks him, disappointed in his older brother. âi told you, iâm not a relationship guy.â nick looks at him with a look of worry. âbut do you like her?â matt looks at him and nods. âthen tell her that you dumb fuck! you just broke her heart for no reason!â he yells in mattâs face. âlook, i canât do this right now. iâm going to bed.â matt sighs softly as he walks out of the room.
as soon as matt gets into his room, he shuts the door, lying down in his bed. his mind is racing with thoughts of you. nick was right. he should have told you that he wanted to date you too, but he was too much of a pussy to actually say it, so he hurt you instead. matt knows youâre probably still mad at him and would slam the door in his face if he went over to your house now, so he decides to wait a day or two. after contemplating it, matt walks over to nickâs room and opens the door, knowing he needs help getting you back. âhow do i win her back nick?â he sits down on his brotherâs bed. âlook, i donât know if she would take you back for sure, but what you need to do is give her a heartfelt apology and tell her how you feel. thatâs your best bet.â matt nods, taking in everything he says. âand flowers. get her some flowers.â âiâll go over there tomorrow.â matt states. âgood because if i lose my best friend, iâll actually kill you.â nick says with a glare.
the next day, matt woke up ready to prove to you that he wants to be your boyfriend. however, the anxiety was pooling in his stomach. what if you didnât want him? what if you went back to blake? he tried to push those thoughts out of his mind, but they still lingered.
once he gathered the courage, he got up out of bed, throwing on a sweater and some jeans. he looks at himself in the mirror, fixing his hair until it looks presentable enough. matt throws on his shoes and grabbing his keys. he begins to walk towards the front door when he passes by nick on the couch. âgood luck matt.â nick tells him. matt just nods and walks out the door towards his minivan.
on the way to your house, he stops by a flower stand and gets you a bouquet of your favorite flowers, hoping that itâs enough for you to forgive him. as he speeds toward your house, mattâs mind is going a million miles a minute. heâs continuously going over what heâs going to say to you in his head. his thoughts are cut off by him arriving at your apartment. matt looks at himself in the mirror once more before grabbing the flowers and stepping out of the car.
matt walked up to your front door and took a deep breath before knocking. he waited a few seconds then the door swung open, revealing you. your hair looks disheveled and your eyes puffy. âwhat are you doing here?â you cross your arms at the boy. âiâm sorry y/n. iâm so sorry.â he holds out the flowers for you to take. you grab them hesitantly and turn around to put them in a vase. matt follows you inside towards your kitchen. âso are you gonna tell me what youâre doing here or can you leave now?â you ask, a harsh tone in your voice. matt sighs, âyou were right. iâm an asshole. i never should have said those things to you. i was just so scared.â you tilt your head to the side. âscared? of what?â âwhat i feel for you, what iâve felt for you since i met you, itâs unlike anything iâve felt before. iâve been in love with you for years, and i was too fucking stupid to tell you. iâm sorry for everything iâve done to you over the years. you didnât deserve any of it.â you can see mattâs eyes start to become glossy as you step towards him. âwhat changed all of a sudden? last night you were dead set on not being with me, but now you do? that doesnât make any sense matt.â you tell him, still skeptical. ânick and chris laid into me last night. they made me realize that i hurt you for no reason and that i was being selfish. i told you i didnât want to be with you, but it was a lie. being with you is all iâve ever wanted and when it was right in front of me i panicked. i know that i probably fucked everything up, but please, if thereâs any part of you that can forgive me, please give me one more chance. let me prove to you that i can be the man you deserve.â you take a deep breath, tears beginning to invade your waterline. you want to tell him off so bad. you want to tell him that you would never take him back, but you canât. before you can overthink it, you take a few steps towards matt and wrap your arms around his neck, resting your head on his shoulder. âdo you really mean it?â you ask him softly. âi mean it baby. i promise iâll never hurt you again.â he pulls away and looks down at you with a small smile on his face. you reciprocate the smile as he begins to lean down. your lips brush against each other before he presses his lips against yours. the kiss isnât like any other kiss youâve shared before; itâs soft and sweet instead of hard and rough. you both break away and rest your forehead on his. âyouâre so beautiful, yâknow that?â you feel your face heat up and a smile forming on your face. âshut up.â you tell him before reaching up and kissing him once more.
whatâs your internship like? (in your better cr)
page turners
.
.
.
you canât blame me for wanting to live in a world where society doesnât reserve value and recognition to only be rewarded if you follow the standard, left brained, logical mindset of stem and maths and science and technology â and this is coming from someone who loves those very subjects and excels in them â iâm very much a maths lover, i enjoy solving logical problems, it brings a satisfaction that cannot be described, and yet . i donât feel as alive as when iâm writing, when iâm reading, when iâm analysing, pulling apart, breaking down the intricate threads of thought that make up a story, or an essay, or a poem
my mind may find satisfaction in solving page after page of algebra, but my soul will only find its spark when i give in to emotion and empathetic analysis, and for that very reason, i scripted a different degree for my dr-self, and with that came a different internship in a publishing company that does not exist in this reality â Page Turners
in my dr at the midpoint of my first year in uni, i had gotten into a year long internship at a government office, hired because of my degree in entertainment law majoring in copywriting
but i have a double degree, my second being a degree in arts majoring in literature and creative writing, and i always knew i wanted a more creative job, rather than the technical, legal side of the publishing industry (no matter how well it pays)
so at the end of my first internship, i started exploring different avenues, and Page Turners was brought to my attention (ironically, by my english tutor from high school)
they advertise mainly to young writers, they have an open submission for a monthly online magazine, curated by a theme (think dakota warrenâs nowhere girl collective but only focused on writing â whereas dakota includes submissions for art and music too)
Page Turners wasnât hiring anyone who hadnât gotten a full degree but with the help of my ex-tutor (and ex-boss bcs i used to mark papers for her every now and then) i was able to make a case for an internship position
it took a while, a whole year in fact, but Page Turners thought that a way to reach the youth would be to start as early as possible and the best way to do so is by implementing internship programs into their business plan â essentially, my drive to work in the creative field (and mostly due to my connections bcs networking sucks but it is everything) i was able to convince an up and coming publishing house to start hiring students, who may be exactly like me, just waiting for the opportunity to do something creative
i havenât scripted much on the actual internship program and what it entails but i get accepted and start working at the beginning of my third year (honestly year 3 of uni has a lot of firsts for me â first longterm internship, first boyfriend who i can actually see a future with, first new car, first youtube play button for my anonymous cover channel w two of my high school friends â theres probably more but i donât wanna sound cocky T^T)
anyway, back to the point â my internship essentially allows me to explore the workings of a publishing house, and with my background in copy write law and creative writing, iâm able to dabble in many different divisions and subdivisions, getting a chance to see how the writers, lawyers, agents and editors work â itâs where i find my passion for developmental editing : the profession of assisting with the creative process of a book, primarily a novel, where you go through a synopsis, a story board, and the overall themes and acts of the story, itâs less about the in-debt typo-prevention of editing and more about the overall narrative â stuff like helping to pivot the story or guide the plot in a certain direction to achieve everything the writer hopes for, or, my personal favourite and my special skill if i do say so myself which is patching up plot holes to be seamless and make sense
finally, this internship, the people i worked with, they are the reason i felt confident enough to go back to uni and do a postgrad degree for a masters in creative writing and a specialisation in editing, so i could officially work full time as a developmental editor
meaning i could read and write and help create stories for a living
.
.
.
if i ever script more or after iâve properly experienced this internship, i will definitely update this post, or just make another one!! but for now, this is all iâve got <333
resources for learning Japanese
I'm just making this post because someone asked me! This is stuff I've used and liked; it's not comprehensive by any means. For every resource I enjoy, I know a bunch of Japanese learners who managed to reach a high level of proficiency without using it.
First:
The person who messaged me mentioned motivation. I'm gonna play devil's advocate for a quick sec, so bear with me. Japanese, for native speakers of English who do not know any languages similar to Japanese, is really time-consuming to learn. I am teaching Japanese to a student rn, and I just had a conference with their parents in which I straightforwardly said: In the time it takes your child to learn Japanese, they could probably have learned Spanish, French, how to sail, and a bit of carpentry instead. I'm personally learning Japanese for a lot of different reasons: I want to live in a country where I can afford health care and rent; I love Japanese literature and feel intellectually stilted without access to it; lots of my homies speak Japanese; etc. But there are real trade-offs, and I have sometimes wondered what my life would be if I'd gotten super into Dutch or computer programming or moss instead. It's worth thinking about whether the investment is worth it for you, and taking the time to write out why you're doing this.
The Resources
Grammar
A very nice guy named Tae Kim wrote a perfectly good textbook on basic Japanese grammar that he shares with folks for free (https://guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar).
Bunpro.jp: Bunpro is THE BEST!!!!! Really thorough, logical grammar explanations; they routinely clarify stuff for me that I've never fully understood before. In addition to explaining the grammar, they have tons of example sentences, most of which have audio tracks with recordings made by professional Japanese voice actors. AND you can add the grammar points you're learning to a flashcard desk and practice that way. Bunpro doesn't just improve grammar, but it really improves your speaking and writing skills as well imo; something about the way the flashcards force me to think really works on my active language skills.
GameGengo is a super cool YouTube channel where one guy explains grammar points while showing you tons of examples from real video games. https://www.youtube.com/@GameGengo
JapaneseAmmoWithMisa is another great YouTube channel where a native speaker explains a lot of stuff that I otherwise don't encounter in textbooks.
Kanji
I like WaniKani and think it's been the best thing for me in terms of knowing how to read kanji combinations that are kind of "weird," unusual, rare, etc. However, it took me a long time to realize that WaniKani really focuses on passive reading skills and not writing at all, so I do recommend practicing writing on your own.
I didn't own a kanji dictionary for years, but I've found them pretty necessary since I started focusing on my writing. Both of the above are equally good imo (the left is probably more readily available in Japan; the right is cheaper in the US). They both put the kanji in a logical sequence, from common to uncommon, and then have useful lists of frequent kanji combinations, tell you the stroke order, etc.
Listening
I really like FluentU, which shows you clips from native materials like movies, shows, commercials, interviews, etc., and then teaches you the vocab you heard, quizzes you on it, and shows you the video again so that you can see how much more you can understand. It's a little expensive to use, though (DO wait for their sales, which happen frequently), and you can definitely find a lot of free stuff to listen to online.
I love JFF Theatre, which has recently released movies from Japan, completely free to watch:
They used to only be allowed to stream movies for one month every year, and now they stream different stuff year-round, which is really cool. They usually have about 6 different movies at a time.
Textbooks
The Shin Kanzen Master textbook series, which is based on JLPT levels, is known for being pretty hard but is also v useful, especially if you're trying to pass the JLPT. The vocab textbooks are cool when you're N2 and above because they teach you tons of nuance between synonyms of words.
Misc
You can follow cool Japanese learners on Tumblr like @tokidokitokyo, @corvid-language-library, and @epivanosilon (and tons of other cool folks!!)
There's a fun monthly book club on Discord that's probably good for N2+ folks: https://www.tumblr.com/tokidokitokyo/785027373105020929/seitokais-june-english-book-club
Ruby Gagotoku on Instagram and Substack makes amazing posts on learning Japanese (she is N1+ in terms of reading), and she's really inspiring to me because she taught herself to read Japanese books while never having actually been to Japan. If you follow her, you can definitely find a lot of resources, communities online, and homies to learn with: https://www.instagram.com/rubygagotoku, https://rubygagotoku.substack.com/
Literally yesterday I found the KuLA app (ăăăĺĺŚçżćŻć´ă˘ăăŞKuLA), which teaches you the basics of how to read kuzushiji (pre-modern Japanese script) in a cute way. I love how the little bug-sensei starts off so optimistic but then freaks out when explaining how hard it is to read pre-modern texts lol:
And remember: There's no shame in learning Spanish, French, sailing, and carpentry instead of this beast of a language that has uprooted my life multiple times and has made me go through probably 40,000 flashcards in the last decade lollllll ganbatte
Free or Cheap French Learning Resources So You Can Talk to Belgians
I will update this list as I learn of any more useful ones. If you want general language learning resources check out this other post. This list is French specific. Find lists for other specific languages here.
For the purposes of this list "free" means something that is either totally free or has a useful free tier. "Cheap" is a subscription under $10USD a month, a software license or lifetime membership purchase under $100USD, or a book under $30USD. If you want to suggest a resource for this list please suggest ones in that price range that are of decent quality and not AI generated.
WEBSITES
Lawless French - A free website with french lessons, vocab lists, reviews of different programs, worksheets, and an AI chatbot. The website is in English.
TV5 Monde - TV5 Monde is a TV network that provides French language TV to audiences globally. They also have free video lessons and listening exercises for learners. The website is available in multiple languages.
University of Montreal French Course - This is an online course in Canadian French for beginners on edX that can be taken for free. If you want college credit for it though, you'll have to pay for the certificate. The course is provided regularly but it also happens on a specific schedule so pay attention to when it starts next if you want to take this one.
Le Point du FLE - A website originally made for French tutors but it also has a lot of links to different resources like worksheets and dictionaries that can be useful for self study. The website is entirely in French.
French Today - A website with free articles and lessons explaining different aspects of French culture and casually spoken French. They have different articles explaining specific words and phrases related to different topics like tennis or mother's day for example. They also sell audiobook lessons but those are quite expensive at $70+. The website is mostly in English.
YOUTUBE CHANNELS
HelloFrench - A channel by a woman named Elisabeth who is a Belgian living in France. She has videos about vocabulary, culture, news, slang, and listening practice videos with her husband. The channel is fully in French but with English video titles. There are often French language subtitles onscreen and vocabulary words will pop up onscreen with English translations. Likely best for upper beginner to lower advanced learners depending on the video.
Easy French - A channel part of the easy languages network that has a mix of videos with phrases and dialogues for beginners and interviews with french speakers on the street mostly in Paris but they have made trips to other French speaking regions like Madagascar. The channel has dual language French and English subtitles onscreen. They also have a podcast for intermediate learners.
French Comprehensible Input - A channel with listening practice and comprehensible input for absolute beginners to advanced. The channel discusses a variety of different topics and has different series reading through and discussing French comic books and a series for absolute beginners discussing one different word or concept per video.
French Mornings With Elisa - A channel that's mostly about the nitty gritty of different aspects of grammar, pronunciation, French dictation, and French Culture. The channel is entirely in clear and slow French and subtitles are available in English but only auto generated in French. The channel is mostly targeted at intermediate learners. Elisa also has a podcast for intermediate learners discussing more history and everyday topics.
Français avec Nelly - A channel for French learners entirely in French. It's kind of a catch all channel for upper beginner to advanced learners with discussions of grammar, culture, different learning resources, and travel vlogs and listening and conversation practice. French and English subtitles are available.
Piece of French - A channel by a woman named Elsa who makes vlogs in clear french about everything from traveling to voting to history to teaching her boyfriend French. The channel is in French with English descriptions and video titles. Some videos put vocab words on screen with English translations while others don't.
maprofdefrancais - A channel about Quebec specific culture and language. The host speaks relatively quickly but subtitles are available in French. The channel is entirely in French and better for intermediate to advanced learners.
READING PRACTICE
French graded readers by Olly Richards - French probably has the most books available on storylearning. It seems to be the language they use to test out new book ideas. Every chapter of the books has comprehension questions and vocabulary lists. Short stories and conversations for beginner and intermediate, 30 day mastery series, climate change, world war 2, and western philosophy in easy French. The books are $5-$20 new depending on whether you buy them digital or not and how old they are. They're also fairly easy to find used for much cheaper either at used bookstores or on amazon.
News in French - A free daily email newsletter of news in French for French learners. They also have a paid tier at $5 a month that provides access to their archives, vocabulary lists for every article, and an audio version of their articles.
Journal en français facile - This can either be counted as news articles or a podcast because you can read it or listen to it. It's daily news articles/podcasts for intermediate French learners by Radio France International. They also provide grammar exercises and practice tests. The website is entirely in French.
bibliothèque rose - This is a series for French speaking kids age 6-9. They have original stories as well as novelizations of things like disney movies or winx club. The books range from about $5-$10. The link I provided is for buying them in North America but if you're in Europe you may be able to buy them directly from the company website.
Lire en français facile - Books made for learners of French. They are simplified versions of classic literature that are sorted by CEFR level (A1,B2, etc.). They have definitions of certain vocabulary words in the margins in French. The link I've provided is in French and has a list of them but doesn't have a link to buy them. There isn't really a convenient place to just buy all of them and you may have to do a little digging on amazon or ebay to find the one you want but they're almost never impossible to find for under $20 in my experience.
PODCASTS
Radio France - National public radio station made by the French government and also an app. This is a site made for native speakers but it does indeed have a lot of podcasts and French language music. They also have a news in easy french podcast as mentioned earlier. There's also a lot of content for children that may be easier to understand depending on your level. The website/app is free with an account.
Easy French Poetry - A podcast in slow French. Every episode the host reads out a classic French poem and discusses the history of the poem and a bit about the author. They also often talk about common analysis of the poem and explain different vocabulary words.
Learn French in Your Car - This is one of those classic learn a language in your car CDs that has been put on spotify for free.
French Voices Podcast - A series for intermediate to advanced learners. It's a series of interviews with French speakers about their regions and things they're experts in. The podcast hasn't updated in a few years but there's over 130 episodes in the archive.
Français avec FluiditÊ - This podcast discusses everyday topics and culture in French, mostly about France. There's also the occasional interview. Likely best for upper beginner to upper intermediate.
innerFrench - A podcast aimed at intermediate learners that discusses a variety of topics. The website and episode descriptions are in French.
Easy French Podcast - A podcast by the hosts of the Easy French Youtube Channel aimed at intermediate learners where they discuss different topics and answer questions from listeners.
SELF STUDY TEXTBOOKS AND DICTIONARIES
French all-in-one For Dummies - The for dummies series has one of the more affordable complete self study course French textbooks out there. It comes with a CD for listening and pronunciation practice. You can also buy the individual books in the series on pronunciation or grammar. The complete course book is usually around $25 new but you can also find it used fairly easily.
The Complete French Grammar Course - This series also has books on other things like pronunciation but each book is individually about $30 new. They are also available used however so if this series seems good for you there's still ways to buy it for under $15.
French Made Easy - This series is a budget option at about $10-$15 per book but there are multiple books in the series. It's good enough though.
Easy French Step by Step - This is the McGraw Hill budget option at usually less than $10 that only focuses on the most essential vocabulary and grammar. In other lists I recommend the McGraw Hill complete all-in-one series but for some reason their French version is like $40. They're also harder to find used because they double as workbooks and people write all over them.
Merriam-Webster's French-English Dictionary - This is the classic dictionary for learners with thousands of words with decent explanations and new editions are less than $8 with older editions being even cheaper.
DK French Visual Dictionary - This dictionary is organized by subject and has pictures and translations in English. It goes for $15-$30 depending on which edition you buy. In general older editions are cheaper and it's decently easy to find used.
Exercises in French Phonics - A book written in the early 80s that helps learners make sense of reading French phonetically. Much like English, it can be difficult to sound out or guess at the pronunciation of words in French and this book is designed to help with that. It can be bought from anywhere between $2-$10 depending on how new your copy is.
SERIES FOR LEARNERS AND KIDS SHOWS
French in Action - A series made in the 1980s for use in French classrooms. The series follows different people in everyday situations and is useful for beginner to upper beginner learners. You have to pay for the supplementary workbooks but in the US and Canada the videos at least are free. Outside the US and Canada you may need to pay or use a VPN to access them depending on your country.
Totally Spies - Yup, Totally Spies is a French series. The French language YouTube channel has full episodes and a few full seasons as well as clip compilations. The series is aimed at preteens so the language used is pretty fast paced but because it's an animated series there's also a lot of exaggerated visual storytelling which makes it easier to follow.
Extr@ - A 13 episode sitcom made for French learners that follows an American student moving to Paris.
The Adventures of TinTin - This website has free TinTin animated shorts, movies, tv shows, and documentaries going all the way back to the late 50s. The website is available in multiple languages.
Materials that helped me pass the DTZ B1 exam and not lose my marbles
YouTube
Benjamin - Der Deutschlehrer
My favorite channel for specifically preparing for the exam. Very good at explaining letters, conversations, that sort of thing. Also very helpful with advice on what to add or take away in the delivery to make it sound more b1 rather than a2.
LordPappnase
I love his gameplay videos and his way of speaking. But frankly, he's more as an example here - go to youtube and type in your hobby/special interest/favorite game/favorite media + deutsch into the search box and you'll get a lot of auditory training, which you won't be bored watching! I have to admit, I get terribly bored watching all these videos that are specifically designed for language learners - they look in places like they think I'm an idiot >.<
Android Apps
Babbel
The best program for learning German in my eyes. Grammar, drills, interesting topics - it's all there. But, a small nuance - it is the best for those who know Ukrainian, because then you will have a full course without ads and restrictions. I do not know why. But it's worth taking advantage of if you have the opportunity!
Flashcards // Anki // Drops
You will always benefit from a program which is simply a deck of useful words to memorize.. I used Flashcards like 90% of the time, but the other two will also do the job if you like them better.
Tutor Lily
I can't put into words the usefulness of this app. It's a chatbot with whom you can talk a little every day - and thus literally force your brain to lay down the neural pathways of how you should communicate in a particular language. I credit my 97/100 on speaking to this program alone. It is 100% worth it.
Polygloss
Shows you images that you have to describe in your target language. It doesn't sound particularly helpful, but one part of the DTZ exam is literally describing the picture! So it's actually insanely useful - including the fact that it forces you to look up words to describe different objects, events, and the like (or think of what you can call it if you forget a specific word).
Clozemaster
Read more about how I use it here and here!~
Additional notes:
I'm sorry, but there is no way to âlearn a language in two weeksâ. They're lying to you. You have to sit and study, half an hour a day, ten minutes - even five minutes. Every day. Or every other day. Learning a language takes time, and even if someone was able to memorize a few lines for an exam to pass, factually speaking, it's a Pyrrhic victory - they still have to learn it all over again if they want to really know the language and not just pass the exam (which may work on b1, but good luck with b2 then, me dude).
You will be bored. You will feel like nothing is happening. That's part of the process - and there's no avoiding it. And that's okay.
Find something that lets you dip your feet into the language, but doesn't feel like bloody agony - for me, it was listening to the German podcast Easy German on the way to and from my courses. By the time of the exam, I had listened to about 70 hours of this podcast, which is 70 hours of uninterrupted German. By the end, I was even understanding it very well!
If you like playing video games, put on German voiceovers. Even if you leave the text in your native language, it's still an unconscious imersion - and every minute is worth it.
While you're at it - put German dubbing in your movies and TV series too. It may be strange at first, but it also helps a lot!
And in the name of all that is holy, don't use chat gpt. No, chat gpt's âwonderful courses and explanationsâ won't help you. No, if you throw your letters into it, it won't analyze them and give you a worthwhile assessment - it'll hallucinate and give you some faulty answers.
Please. We really don't need another person starting their German letter with âGuten Tag,â, as did at least 3 of my coursemates <.<
And good luck!~
Top Form goes TOO meta Part 2: Headliner TH (which represents Boom Raveewit) is officially beefing with Grand Ivory Records (which represents Smart Chisanupong)
Also, it's their AGENCIES, not the actors themselves.
When I said I wanted to be part of the JinAkin fandom, I didn't mean that LITERALLY, dear God what is happening.
Side note: this post isn't meant to spread hate, I love this show and these two actors more than I can express, and I want them to do super duper well. I wrote this retrospective because I find this situation super interesting from a business and industry standpoint. I haven't seen a company more committed to destroying their own talent's success since Attrakt torpedoed the KPop group Fifty-Fifty's reputation three years ago.
Alright, my wonderful friends-- if you haven't seen this on X yet, this whole situation blew up when Grand Ivory Records, the record label managing rights and distribution to Smart Chisanupong's music and performances, released this statement a few days after the airing of Top Form ep. 9:
This is a tricky situation and I initially discussed more about what that means for Smart and Boom here. This previous discussion was written before WeTV's formal statement just yesterday though, so more on that below.
Basically, the gist of Smart's predicament is that even before Top Form The Series was produced, he was already signed to Grand Ivory Records (GIR) as a recording artist; thus, GIR promotes, distributes and licenses all of his songs and musical performances. As a recording company however, GIR was previously uninterested in handling Smart's possible foray into acting (or any of his projects besides music, for that matter). They signed a co-management deal with Headliner TH, who is now responsible for funding and promoting Smart's acting ventures. Now, after the success of the series and Smart's increased bankability as a talent, GIR is fighting to EXCLUSIVELY handle all of Smart's projects-- music or otherwise-- moving forward.
Usually, companies loan out their talents to other agencies as a way to save money on promotions and project deals, especially for artists who they find difficult to market (as evidenced by how little GIR has marketed Smart in the past four years he's been signed to their label). Their artist still has to pay them a cut of the royalties for any projects, but they don't have to spend money to actively find new projects or promote their talents because the co-agency is doing it for them.
For example, THIS was the extent of the promos done by GIR to market Smart's new series Top Form: retweeting posts from the official social media pages:
Meanwhile, Headliner underwent a respectable marketing campaign for Top Form, activating both their modeling agency Image Future, and their new prod house Tai Lai to generate buzz for the project. Headliner launched a SmartBoom vlog series on their Youtube channel. Image Future secured separate modeling gigs for Smart and Boom for different clothing brands and product tie-ins, and Tai Lai is currently selling an official photobook for the ship:
Headliner even organized a pre-airing fanmeet for all the fans of the original manga in both Thailand and Japan:
And WeTV even went one step further and featured Smart and Boom as guests in Chuang Asia season 2, the most watched idol survival show in Asia (and the no. 1 reality show in China). This drew in a truly MASSIVE Chinese fanbase for SmartBoom:
But of course, it would be a disservice to the cast and crew to say that the success of Top Form is solely attributed to its marketing. WeTV is primarily based in China, and was only known to Thai audiences as an international distributor and licensee of Asian shows. It only recently ventured into original programming, so its foothold on Thai audiences is tenuous at best. Top Form's marketing campaign is only a fraction of what GMMTV or Mandee does to promote their shows, and Headliner hasn't really launched many successful ships (or shows) in Thailand since their inception. Top Form, and SmartBoom, was the exception:
Needless to say, GIR wanted a bigger cut of the profits.
For each project performed by Smart for the press tour of Top Form, and the series' tie-ins, GIR gets a small cut of the profits due to their co-partnership deal with Headliner. This is probably a miniscule cut though, and looking at his potential now, they are adamant to keep Smart on their roster. Why else would they be stirring up trouble even before the series has finished airing yet? RUDE.
Yes Jade, they did.
From my very amateur internet sleuthing of pages, forums and past interviews (and if anyone wants to correct me, I am more than happy to be corrected), Smart first signed to Yoma Entertainment with the intention to debut as an idol. When he and his group was placed in limbo (a common occurence for these record labels), he jumped ship and tried to join MeMindY (then a very new company, with only TharnType 2 under its roster). When he and acting partner James were informed that their promised series would be placed on filming hiatus, Smart decided to sign with GIR in late 2021.
This means that Smart has been with GIR for almost four years, with barely anything to show for it. No album, no concerts, no group to speak of. Endless hours of training and serving as support talent for other projects, before GIR gave up and loaned Smart to a relatively new acting agency (Headliner) for a project produced by an unknown house (Tai Lai), all under WeTV-- a foreign company that barely understands Thai popular culture. Now that Smart is bankable, GIR is salivating at the thought of managing all of his (now profitable) projects, including acting.
This of course, pissed Tai Lai and Headliner to all HECK:
Tai Lai posted this a few hours after GIR's announcement, seemingly disputing their claim that the dissolution of the co-partnership was mutual. They also sadly implied that this new arrangement is causing turmoil for the cast and crew. The X meltdown went from bad to worse when Top Form's Director Boss Wasa posted a goodbye message to Top Form on his IG story, despite the confirmation of WeTV's CEO that the series was originally slated for a three-season run.
And of course, everything came to a head this morning when WeTV (and all the other subsidiaries) CLEARLY DISPUTED the claim that the co-partnership has dissolved, and that GIR now retains sole representation rights to Smart.
They also emphasized the resources they've dedicated to ensuring the success of the ship, and that they're willing to fight to retain representation rights for both Smart and Boom.
Jake $ing's "I'm Still In Love With You" plays in the distanc-- oh wait, this is real life? Bummer.
So... has this impacted the fandom in any way?
Well first off, the Chinese fandom is unbelievably MAD at GIR at the moment:
There's only one fandom in this world I respect and fear an unhealthy amount, and that's the Chinese fandom. They have the numbers AND the spending power to cause significant damage to any entity of their choosing (where else would you find a fandom capable of buying out a whole collection of Louis Vuitton suitcases in 24 hours?). I've seen them turn nobodies into sensations overnight, and banish well-respected veterans that do not pass their standards.
The Chinese fandom was able to stage an active boycott in less than a day. It got so bad that GIR had to release a separate stament to assure fans that Smart and Boom would continue their projects as a pair, albeit with some management restrictions. The founder and CEO of GIR also posted this on her private IG :
Hinting that the troubles between these companies run deep. The Chinese fandom says on X that without a joint announcement from all companies clearing the air, they refuse to support any GIR products, and will only focus on supporting Smart during his Headliner promos.
Has this affected Smart and Boom's dynamic at all?
The short answer is seemingly NO. Unless both Smart and Boom are that good at acting (which they are, oh no wrong supposition đ
), they're still very funny and charming in interviews, and affectionate with one another as with the rest of the cast.
If there is trouble behind the scenes, at least there's the guarantee that Smart doesn't have anything to with all this kerfuffle. Smart is the first of the cast to always bring up the possibility of a second season, and seems very proud of the series and his ship with Boom.
Anyway, here's the saga so far. I stand with WeTV, but I have to admit, I am getting worried about the whole affair. I hope it blows over soon.
We'll see.
Now WeTV, shoot that season 2 already for pete's sake! Or that cop/vampire drama. Y'all so slow GMMTV might catch wind of the issues and grab your talents from under your noses.
