Don't mind me I'm just crying because I'm reading a fantasy novel with a main character that is an ambulatory wheelchair user (who also uses a prosthetic leg) with chronic pain. This is the first time I've read something like this outside of my own stories.
"In truth, Kissen's leg still ached, it always ached, but it was better than when they arrived. The wheelchair was a blessing. She wasn't used to it and kept wanting to jump up. But it was a relief to be able to rest her hips."
- Hannah Kaner, Godkiller

Any book recs featuring characters with chronic pain and/or hypermobility? Thanks for all your hard work!
absolutely <3
Godkiller by Hannah Kaner (chronic pain)
The Grimrose Girls by Laura Pohl (fibromyalgia)
Nine of Swords, Reversed by Xan West (arthritis pain)
Time and Time Again by Chatham Greenfield (chronic pain)
okay and this one is a bit outside the box (it’s also just in our wishlist, we haven’t been able to purchase yet) but Contingent Figure: Chronic pain and queer embodiment by Michael D. Snediker if you want some theory to go with that fiction. Also Hurting Like Hell, Living With Gusto is a memoir by a queer author Victoria Stopp.
& a few more fiction we don’t have (yet):
Even if We Break by Marieke Nijkamp (chronic pain)
Fight + Flight by Jules Machias (okay this one is middle grade HOWEVER it does have hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos rep)
Take All of Us by Natalie Leif (chronic migranes)
Anatomical Venus by Courtney Bates-Hardy (chronic pain)

Heard this on the radio, this afternoon (2 May, 2023).
The story is semi-autobiographical, because the author also grew up with one leg, and it gives me hope, because it's not "Inspirational" like the kids' books about disability were when I was growing up.
The Moral? It is not your responsibility to be an educational resource. And, as a matter of fact, it's your responsibility to set boundaries, and not let people get away with rude questions.
I know it's cliche to say: "I wish I had a book like this when I was growing up," but, yeah, I do.

Really in need of some physical disability rep in film and books, especially casual rep. Can anyone recommend?

Whenever I see people impatiently awaiting the next installment of their favourite franchise, I think about the Borrowers books and how Mary Norton originally ended her series with four books complete with a neat little bow that was the epilogue, confirming Arrietty's marriage to Spiller and their happy ever after, only to write a fifth book in the series a whooping twenty years after its original completion where ghosts are introduced into the world without explanation, a love triangle is forced between Arrietty, Spiller and new character Peagreen (who was made into her brother and his disability erased in the 1998 movie), the book ends on a cliffhanger with no resolution for any of the plotlines introduced; Arrietty's family STILL forbid her from mingling with humans and she chickens out on speaking with her friends from book 4 again, then Arrietty and Spiller fight over his refusal to interact with humans (which, given Spiller's backstory is entirely justified), Arrietty runs to Peagreen for comfort and the story ENDS, Mary Norton DIED before she could write the next book and conclude their story, if that's not bad enough, modern publications of book 4 omit the original epilogue so there's no clear satisfying ending, I think about this a lot

I'm Noah, and I write queer fantasy books with disabled and/or neurodivergent characters.
Tumblr media
The Eternal Machine was my debut book, the first in an epic and dark steampunk fantasy series. ⚔️🏴‍☠️
Phantom and Rook is a cozy urban fantasy, and the first one I went 'all out' with. I also have special news about this one. 🏳️‍🌈✨
The Rebel Foxes is the last book I released, and it's the first one under my new trans af pen name, Noah Hawthorne. It's a standalone in an interconnected dark fantasy punk series. 🔥🏳️‍⚧️
My website is here, and you can subscribe to the Crew of Misfits and get free novellas here.

Hey Eda is literally shown to be able to remove her arms and not as an illusion so why didn't she just remove her arm and then put it back on during the draining spell 😭 or even if it disappeared forever why didn't she think to do this on her own

Review: Crooked Kingdom
★★★★★ - 5 stars
"I would come for you. And if I couldn't walk, I'd crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we'd fight our way out together - knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that's what we do. We never stop fighting."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the front of Crooked Kingdom, there should be a warning that reads, "You will experience a withdrawal stage once finished reading and will feel like you are no longer whole". That is the effect of this enticing, page-turner of a book. It tells the story of Kaz Brekker and his crew following the Ice Court Heist that occurs within Six Of Crows, as they seek out revenge upon a swindling mercher, in hopes of gaining their well-earned reward. It's dramatic, dark and full to the brim with tales of crime, but it's simultaneously funny and astoundingly adorable.
There are three relationships that have you completely hooked and often screaming at words on paper and that is because... the romance within this story is nothing but wonderful. At times it is overt and between the lines but nevertheless remains an amazing aspect of the story. Overall, the love between the characters, both romantic and platonic, is immaculately written.
Through this book there is a beautiful discussion of disability (both physical and mental) and ableism within society. It's raw and honest about disability, and can be quite emotional to read, yet it is also extremely empowering and uplifting. It discusses dyslexia and the realities of being a cane user but it never takes away from the fantasy plot. In fact, it aids it, because it makes the characters wonderfully imperfect and more real.
Leigh Bardugo is an incredible writer - she will draw you into the world of the Grishaverse and take you down a path before tearing your heart to pieces. She creates characters who you come to love, characters who go through so much and yet stay standing and she will make you cry through what happens to them. It's a painful read, and yet a rewarding one because it is so well-written. A tale of love, crime, trauma and revenge: Crooked Kingdom is an outstanding addition to the ranks of the fantasy genre.

This Rotten Work Playlists: Rachel Edition!
As @evelynhug0 so kindly requested, I'm going to release each of the main character playlists (and one for the main ship, Rachel and Daiyu) once a week leading up to the release of the book!
First up is Rachel Barsky, my beloved lesbian ex-Chosen One with anger management issues and lots of heart. After killing the evil Headmaster of her magical high school, she's doing her best to settle into normalcy at Normie community college by living with her two best friends, Zell and Stebbie, cooking a lot of Kosher BBQ, and attending history and theater classes. (She's a self-admitted drama queen, what can she say?) There's just one problem: her annoyingly attractive rival, Daiyu, shows up on the first day of classes, and Rachel's instinct to shoot lightning first and ask questions later is going to get everyone into a whole heap of trouble.
Here's a sample of her character description:
"Yep, that's me: a face full of freckles and close-set brown eyes full of ghosts. A head of frizzy blonde curls only able to be tamed when pulled into fishtail braids and a nose that’s a bit too big and pinched and a mouth that’s too loud for anyone save Zell and Stebbie. A chunk of the top of my left ear missing thanks to a fire blast from Daiyu in the Tournament. Medium height, medium build, only muscles coming from a lifetime of running and years of reluctant dueling training I got after school. A girl who was born during one hurricane and who lost her parents in another.
I make sense in this household of misfits and dreamers, kids who are a little too strange to fit in right."

like guys i promise im aware blossomfall is meant to be a glass child. i just think she’s a poorly written one lmao
#tbh thats why my feelings on her are so strong. its a delicate topic for kids but time and time again#its been handled extremely poorly and just used as an excuse to hate disabled people#i think my exhaustion with these stories is bc they were sorta shoved down my throat by the school board growing up#because they heard ‘’wow you got TWO autistic brothers??? your life must SUCK ASS AND BALLS have this book abt how autism ruins families’’#wow cool i feel so much better guys. both about the ableism my family faces in general and about my undiagnosed autism#if i had to think. and i havent read this in forever so i could be misremembering. i think a decent example of a glass child trope#is the sister from ‘’wonder’’ (the book. idk what the movie did)#because while she’s an important character who struggles with internalized ableism#the focus is still on auggie and HIS struggles with his own disability and the ableism he faces as a result#and the sister isnt demonized for her feelings but she does still have to grapple with them#and accept her situation and that no one is at fault or anything. its just a consequence of an ableist society more than anything#again. been forever and ever since i read that book and iirc it does still have iffy shit like the one chapter on genetics#like to this day that sticks out as an uncomfortable chapter and idk if i can say its fantastic rep bc of that#but idk. i remember liking it fine as a kid#i always appreciated books that tried to get into multiple perspectives on the issues#also this is just me and ik it goes against the definition of the term#but man. kinda wish we’d get a glass child character thats also disabled and their disability is undiagnosed or ignored#for the sake of only prioritizing their sibling and bc they have to be ‘’the perfect abled child’’#because thats my story lol#wasnt allowed to be disabled or imperfect or need help because being a third disabled kid wouldve been too much

Today's bi book of the day is Stars in Their Eyes by Jessica Walton and Aśka!
Tumblr media
It's a romance graphic novel with a bisexual amputee teen finding love at her first fan convention while struggling to manage her chronic pain.
Has f/nbi romance.
In this lighthearted YA romance, Maisie and Ollie discover that nothing beats the feeling of falling in love for the first time. Maisie is on her way to Fancon! She's looking forward to meeting her idol, Kara Bufano, the action hero from her favorite TV show, who has a lower-leg amputation, just like Maisie. But when Maisie and her mom arrive at the convention center, she is stopped in her tracks by Ollie, a cute volunteer working the show. They are kind, charming, and geek out about nerd culture just as much as Maisie does. And as the day wears on, Maisie notices feelings for Ollie that she's never had before. Is this what it feels like to fall in love? Perfect for fans of Heartstopper and Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me, this graphic novel debut is a fresh, one-of-a-kind story that celebrates the excitement of meeting someone special for the first time.
