October 8: Outnumbered (Whumptober)

Chatter broke out as soon as the static filled the screen and continued as Batman and Constantine moved back onto the stage. Back at the chairs, Nightwing could see Wonder Woman messing with a remote and a moment later the video clicked off as Batman stepped forward to speak.

“So, as you can see, we’ve got quite the situation at hand. Now I’m sure many of you are wondering if what he said was true. I know that was my first question. To answer that, I’m going to let Constantine take the floor.” That said, Batman stepped back some as Constantine stepped forward. And it was in that moment that Nightwing realized just how serious this was. In all the years he’d known Constantine he’d never seen the man look this serious before. And, if Nightwing wasn’t mistaken, the man was completely sober. Which was worrying in and of itself. This was big.

“It’s true alright.” Constantine’s gruff voice cut across the room. “The Infinite Realms is just as the king said. It’s the place where all afterlives reside as well as the glue that holds all of reality together. This means that the dead of every world in our universe, and the dead of every other universe in existence go there. If they decide to go to war against us there’s very little we could do against those numbers, especially since most of our weapons and abilities won’t even touch a being of the Infinite Realms, let alone end one. And those that die on our side just add to their numbers. And that’s not even mentioning King Phantom himself.” Constantine shook his head with a grimace. “Phantom is a young king. By my reports he’s had the throne for less than a decade, but the Realm and its people love him. The previous King, Pariah Dark, was a tyrannical dictator that ended up having to be sealed away for the safety of the Realms as well as the mortal planes. It took several Ancients, beings of immense age and power, to seal him away. But he was somehow freed several years back. That’s when Phantom took him down. From what I heard it took King Phantom under half an hour to take the old king down. Single Handed. He’s not someone we want to mess with.”

“So what are we supposed to do?” A voice Nightwing didn’t quite recognize from the front of the crowd called. Constantine huffed and crossed his arms.

“As far as I’m concerned we evacuate who we can, but if the United States is dumb enough to refuse to repeal this mess then we let them lie in the bed they made.”

“And these Ecto Acts?” Another vaguely familiar voice asked, sounding a bit desperate.  “Are those real too?” There must have been some sort of discussion earlier about who would explain what, because Constantine didn’t bother looking to check before he stepped back to let Batman take over once more.

“Unfortunately, yes.” Batman informed them grimly. “I’m not sure how they slipped by us, but about five years ago a set of laws were quietly passed that labeled all so-called ecto-entities as non-sentient and dangerous. Under these laws the Ghost Investigation Ward have the right to do whatever they deem necessary to understand and deal with the threat posed by these beings. And they deem anyone with a reading of 5 or higher on their meters as an ecto-entity. No matter if they’ve got a beating heart or not.”

Unsurprisingly, this did not go over well with the crowd. It was one, already horrid, thing to say that these beings from another dimension were all non-sentient, but to tack on that any one of their own people who were contaminated enough were also non-sentient was just insane. How had this gotten passed?

“How do they measure that?” That was Cyborg’s voice, probably wanting to get ahold of the tech so they could figure out who all would fall under this category.

“We’re still working that out, but—“

gosh this one's a thinker... I watched all of the movies (except pocahantas and snow whitebecause I have two sisters but to be honest I'm not too invested in the franchise? myself. But I do like each and every horse and animal friend in the movies. Extra brownie points for Mulan because of Mushu and Tangled for Maximus, and Brave for Angus but idk if I can count that movie cause I literally only remember the moments with the horse and the moment where the brothers turned into bears.

But yeah, if it got an animal, particularly a horse, I like. (this only applies to movies before and including Tangled, the relentless ads after frozen about frozen got me and my sisters bored of disney for the longest time and it's never been the same :') )

So I was just looking up Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron reviews, and WOW was it underrated at the time of its release, it got some pretty mediocre scores.

Anyway, I just wanted to make fun of this one review I uncovered by Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian.

I seriously wonder what he was expecting. Spirit's pretty hardcore for a kid's movie. Also, BAMBI, really?

This dude is way too concerned with seeing Spirit's nuts and joystick.

...I mean it's certainly not as comedic as Shrek, and it's not meant to be. But saying the movie's bland and undemanding? Seriously? The movie with the horse and the Native man being starved and dehydrated to try to break their will, and them both escaping and standing up to the U.S. army? That movie?!

Also this dude is still very concerned about the fact that Spirit's bing-bongs are missing.

How on earth is Spirit like Bambi, how did you reach that conclusion?! Because they both star animals? Like they're not even both TALKING animals, the most we get is some narration from Spirit, all other communication is through horse vocalization and body language.

After rewatching Spirit horse movie for the millionth time I introduce Hazbin Hotel x Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron to you all

I probably won't post the rest of the cast until the day after tomorrow since it's a school night

In this AU, in place of Hell is the Tophet Herd, which resides in the Badlands and overall deserty areas, meaning lack of water and food, which also means that the horses are hungry, thirsty and really angry. The Tophet Herd mostly consists of either lone wild horses, Heaven's Cavalry's sick and/or injured horses or horses dropped off by their owners to let nature finish them off.

In place of Heaven is Heaven's Cavalry, also acting as the Exorcist army. The cavalry acts as A training base for young soldiers and cavalry horses.

Once a year Heaven's Cavalry descends upon the Badlands to wrangle in as many horses as possible for the army, gravely injuring or even killing Tophet Herd's horses in the panic. So to counter this, Charlie has decided to move her entire herd further away from the humans. But since Tophet herd is so ridiculously big, moving the entire herd at once would risk forgetting someone behind, so Charlie comes up with the idea to move smaller groups at first and then move onto bigger and bigger groups.

But then comes the problem of scouting out an appropriate place. So Charlie gathers the original cast, goes to meet with some of the important cavalry horses(Adam, Lute, and later Emily and Sera) with help from her dad(cuz y'know fallen angel=abondoned cavalry horse and I'm sure Lucifer still had close connections with a few cavalry horses).

Very mature and emotionally sensitive. TY is definitely an empath and is so warm and understanding that he is many people's "comfort person". He exudes a very relaxing aura. No topic is too obscure for him too - he will wholeheartedly listen to your rants or weird dreams, and actually give relevant responses. He’ll even follow up with you later once you’ve already forgotten. Also, TY is so intuitive you may be convince he has a 6th sense. He is very good at reading people because he takes his time to get to know them and to carefully examine their every move. Dating TY is really special. Everything he does for his partner is carefully thought out and meaningful. Also, I can see him as a really great family man. He doesn't shy away from domestic activities and chores and he’s very good with children. TY know how to be responsible and will be an incredible provider.

His intuition may be a double edged sword, as it is not correct 100% of the time. He'll try to predict your moves, which may become annoying, and will be in denial if he’s wrong. Oftentimes, he tries to decipher the motives behind your actions, without asking you, and will come to his own conclusions. Also, he can be very closed off. Since he feels his emotions so deeply, he keeps them to himself. Negative emotions will eventually evolve into resentment, but he can't bring himself to share with his partner. To that point, his partner may consider him hard to read.. When they ask him "how are you" they will always receive a "fine" as an answer - even if he is falling apart on the inside.

Taeil

Venus in Cancer

Although he can be a bit reserved, Taeil loves to learn and experience new things. He has an adventurous spirit with a rational head on his shoulders- which is a great combination. Taeil is the type to follow through with his plans and brings things to fruition, rather than letting things fall through the cracks. Also, Taeil strikes me as an old fashioned-traditional type when it comes to romance. He will romance you in a way you thought only existed in the movies. He is not afraid to put himself out there and will let you know exactly how he feels about you from the very beginning. Taeil is especially respectful towards women, and will always hold doors open and guide you across the street (such a gentlemen). Also, he will be your travel buddy. You can pick the place and he’ll accompany you.

Taeil needs a lot of affirmation from his partner. His mind can wander and he will analyze every movement from his partner. If his partner doesn't acknowledge him (ex. introduce him as their partner or become facebook official) he will take it PERSONALLY. However, Taeil doesn’t shy away from hard conversations and will straight up ask you why you didn’t acknowledge him. Even though he is able to talk it out he still will harbor negative feelings from being hurt. He is one to forgive but not forget and will keep a running list of all the times you hurt him.

Johnny

Venus in Capricorn

Johnny can't be tamed guys. He is a wild stallion running free unable to be tied down. Well unless someone special comes along. At the moment he is career focused and is as hard working as they come. As a true independent spirit, he tends to do things for himself and hates being limited by the expectation of others. Whatever he wants to do - he does. Wherever he wants to go - he goes. He knows that one day he wants to settle down and have a family, so for now he's getting all of his wild impulses out of his system. As a partner, you will constantly be smiling. He loves to make you laugh and see you happy - and he loves knowing he’s the reason you're happy. Also, he will support and promote all of your passion projects because he want to see you succeed.

Although he is highly independent, he does prefer to be in a relationship or dating. He likes the companionship and, of course, intimacy. However, he is the type to only have it when he wants it. If the other person catches feelings and wants to see him when he is in one of his "i need to do my own thing" moods, he will flake on them. But he will call them out of the blue once he decides he needs some intimacy and has the audacity to be annoyed if he gets any complaints from them. Also, at least right now, work comes first. If a big opportunity were to come his way which would jeopardize his relationship… he’ll probably look for a way out.

Yuta

Deviously charming and captivating, Yuta's love and affection is not for the faint of heart. His outpouring confidence and intensity is what sets him apart from the crowd. Not one to be a follower, Yuta marches to the beat of his own drum and aims to be the most authentic version of himself. Although he may hold himself back when first meeting him, he will be open and honest with you. He will tell you how it is when no one else does. Also, he is willing to explore any topic or experience with you. Nothing is too dark or obscure for him. In fact, the more controversial the better. As a lover he is sensual and attentive. You are literally his whole world and he will be constantly trying to impress you.

Yuta takes brutally honest to a whole new level. He can be tactless when giving his honest opinion. Someone who doesn’t pull any punches can be a good thing, but he’s always ready to give advice - even when you didn’t ask. Also, his interest in the obscure can make him indifferent towards everyday, mundane topics. He claims that more “mainstream” interests are “vanilla” and loses interest quickly. It’s not hard to catch his attention , but it is hard to keep it. Despite this, he is very loyal. Even if he does find you more on the “boring” side, he will stick by you.

Doyoung

DY has a strong moral compass and a compassionate spirit. Most of his actions are dictated by his inherit ability to decipher right from wrong. He is very polite and chivalrous and prefers to upkeep a stellar reputation. But the best part about DY is that there’s no ulterior motive behind his actions. He really is that nice. Doyoung has empathy for others and is sensitive to the experiences of others. Elders, children, and even pets naturally gravitate to him and anyone can feel comfortable in his presence. Also, he is very affectionate as a partner. DY is not afraid to show how much he cares for you and will be very tender in his affection.

Seeing the world in black and white makes Doyoung a bit uptight. Not one to push the boundaries, he tends to stay in his comfort zone and can become uncomfortable in new situations. Nevertheless, he is good at adapting and once he become more comfortable around the people he’s with, he can loosen up. But the period between him entering an unknown situation and him being comfortable varies. Also, DY is very sensitive. This isn’t necessarily a bad trait, but he tends to hold it in. He is easily hurt by others but still tries to maintain relationships with those who hurt him. DY has difficulty cutting people off, even when he needs to.

Jaehyun

If there was one word I would use to describe Jaehyun it would be - LAYERED. Our boy has so many layers you’ll never know if you’re actually close or if you’re acquaintances. Upon first meeting him you’ll notice how laid back he is, in fact he may even seem quiet or reserved. But Jaehyun is very whimsical and quirky once you get to know him. You’ll discover he likes bands you would have never guessed someone like him would like or you’ll discover his antique babydoll collection (ok not exactly that but I def think he is a collector). One thing about all of Jaehyuns layers though, is his open mindedness and warmth. He doesn’t discriminate when meeting people, and usually treats everyone the same at first. Additionally, Jaehyun is a hard worker. All these aspects will definitely be apparent in his romantic relationship as he will be dedicated to making his partner feel as secure as possible.

He can be unpredictable. Whether he randomly tries a new perfume or impulsively flies to a beach for the day - he lives life according to his rules. Most of the time you will be the one reaching out to him only to learn that he’s half way across the world for a few weeks. It’s not that he’s keeping things secret - he literally just forgot to tell you. He doesn’t like clinginess but he also fails to understand that letting people close to you, especially your partner, know where you are is important.

Rhett's favorite movie growing up was Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and he made sure everyone knew it.

Movie night? He's begging to watch it for the umpteenth time; he was the first to get a TV in his bedroom, purely because Cecelia couldn't take another rewatch.

He had an entire shelf dedicated to it for years, complete with the DVD case, the Spirit Breyer horses, and anything that reminded him of his favorite horses. It was ultimately taken down as his interests changed, but they still reside safely tucked in a box.

He doesn't realize it, but he unintentionally quotes things from the movie. Perry pitches a fit one afternoon because Rhett's horse let herself out of her stall and raided the feed bin, and Rhett quietly, "Sometimes a horse has gotta do what a horse has gotta do."

And maybe that's why he wound up picking the wildest horse in the sale barn; an ornery mare who wanted nothing to do with anyone. Cecelia was more than convinced the horse was a liability that they'd have to pay to get rid of, but would you know it, Rhett's befriended the damn horse.

Did it take several years? Yes.

Would he go back and do it all over again? Also yes.

Though he's not the best at the guitar, Rhett knows most of the soundtrack by heart, but when you first hear him playing Here I Am by Bryan Adams and ask about it, he plays it off as some song he heard on the radio. Because how does he explain that, no, this is a song from an animated horse movie?

Pretends that it's not on his list of favorites, until you suggest watching it. The facade instantly drops, and he'll physically haul your ass to the couch.

Tears up every time you get to the scene of Spirit being dragged away from Rain after the waterfall.

The moment Amy was old enough to start developing favorite characters, Perry was on Rhett about keeping his mouth shut about that damn horse movie because he can't take another rewatch in this lifetime. But then Rhett's put on impromptu babysitting duty one day, and that night, five-year-old Amy is at the dinner table, asking Uncle Rhett if he'll watch that horse movie with her again tomorrow...

Perry has not known peace since.

Not a fan of the Spirit reboot in the slightest, and he can go on about it for hours, but he keeps his mouth shut around Amy because she absolutely adores that reboot. Buys her the merch for her birthday and Christmas, regardless.

"They completely missed the point of the original," he mutters to you as he places several stuffed horses into the shopping cart.

: 1 WOLF CHILDREN

i absolutely have to put this as number one, mostly since it was one of the first movies i watched that i connected with on such a deep level when i was newly awakened.

without any spoilers, i felt that i related to both of the children so well that the movie was incredibly moving for me to watch. still one of my favourites to this day!

: 2 SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMMERON

another big childhood movie for me - it’s so disappointing that they followed it up with a crappy horse-girl tv series though. also has an incredibly moving soundtrack that i still listen to.

: 3 BROTHER BEAR

i love the plot of this movie- it is so comforting. and the soundtrack, oh my. it’s one of my favourite disney movies for sure, and you definitely don’t need a to have a bear theriotype to relate either.

: 4 BALTO

rewatched this one fairly recently - some hard wolf feels for this movie. the feeling of not belonging as both a dog and a wolf is relatable, just in a different sense as a non-human.

although i feel like there’s much more or a alterhuman vibe from the second movie: wolf quest. i feel like most people will argue that nothing beats the original but i have a big soft spot for balto II.

: 5 BOLT

a disney gem, that i feel people forget about a lot. i’m including this one because it was a recent re-watch for me and it has some big alterhuman feels. the way bolt is learning to be a “dog” again without his super-powers, just reminds me of my alterhumanity - the window scene especially.

WOLFWALKERS : theres a lot of talk about this one, though i’ve only seen clips!

POM POKO : a studio ghibli movie about tanuki’s that can shapeshift.

What particular bits of hinted-at lore in TTS do you think had the most interesting potential, but were never really properly explored? (e.g. Adira and the brotherhood, Eugene & Lance in Vardaros, the logistics of Corona proper and the castle guards, the rest of the seven kingdoms not just cameoing as lazy stereotypes of other cultures)

I'm gonna stop you right there and defend Amanda Jolly and her character designs for the other kingdoms. She did her damnedest to be inclusive in a show that barely was, and each of the other Seven Kingdoms took inspiration from more than one culture, not "lazy stereotypes of other cultures". She didn't have final say in how any of them were colored, but she tried so hard to make sure other cultures were represented at all.

As for your question, I think Demanitus' followers (which included Gothel), who then betrayed him for Zhan Tiri was one of the most intriguing aspects. None of that was ever explained. They didn't even try. The only way we know for a fact that one silhouette was Gothel was because Donna Murphy is credited for the episode.

What did those three feel they had to gain? Did Zhan Tiri promise them something? Did they feel she fulfilled her end of the bargain? What were their relationships with each other like? Why did Gothel defect? Did she defect? Was there another reason why she never got a powered-up spirit form?

However, even though I found that facet the most intriguing, I would have liked to have seen more of Eugene and Lance's past. I would have loved to have seen them in the orphanage, the moment they decided to become thieves, the logistics of working for the Baron, and how that led to Eugene falling for Stallion. At what age were they previously going to get married? (Signs point to Eugene being 16, which is yikes. But that's also not confirmed, just speculated on by the fans based on what we know of the timeline.) If there were to ever be a spinoff of the series, this is what I would want it to be about. Eugene and Lance and their past felt the most like the world the movie built, instead of the one the series built.

What an intense round!

We had no sweeps and one tie, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron vs Coraline, which was also the poll with the most votes! Ponyo vs Nausicaä was very close throughout the week, until the last couple of days when Ponyo took the lead. We had to say goodbye to Lilo, but she gave a good fight, so far it's the one that has managed the most votes against Spiderverse.

At this point I've watched all the movies competing, but there are many, MANY, from the Revenge of the Underrated submissions I haven't watched, and I bet most of you haven't either. So it occurred to me, what if we make a weekly watch party? If you know any good page to do this, please share it, I'd appreciate it greatly.

Jar Spell: Spirit's Freedom

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is a 2002 animated movie about a young mustang stallion in 19th century western America. After growing up as a wild horse, he is captured by white soldiers of the United States Cavalry and “broken” to bear a saddle and rider before making his escape with a Lakota youth named Little Creek. He bears witness to the abuse that horses suffer as a great railroad is being built, and finally runs free again with his herd after falling in love with a mare named Rain. This jar spell channels Spirit’s yearning for freedom from oppression, abuse, and confinement, and is ideal for anyone seeking emotional help with breaking free from an abusive home, job, or relationship. (Please see the “Notes” section at the end for mundane resources related to escaping abusive situations).

You will absolutely need:

a small vessel with a lid (a pill bottle or spice shaker works just fine)

sealing wax (ideally blue or white) or liquid glue

Once you have your vessel, add some ingredients related to wild horses running free and/or your conception of what freedom means. Some suggested ingredients that you may or may not include depending on your preferences are:

a clipping of hair from a horse’s mane or tail

a feather from a wild bird (for flight and freedom)

1-3 horse-themed bracelet charms but NOT horseshoe charms (horseshoes symbolize being tamed)

sea salt (for the wildness of the ocean)

dried flower heads from flowering weeds (for defiance)

peppercorns and/or ground black/red pepper (for defiance)

Directions:

Cleanse your vessel if it is repurposed or you feel a need to cleanse it, then add your ingredients but do not seal it just yet. In a quiet, private place and with your filled vessel nearby, ponder the nature of your confinement and the liberation you hope to achieve. Ruminate on the steps you will need to take in order to gain your freedom—this could be searching for a new job, locating a place of sanctuary in which to take refuge, reaching out to a friend or loved one for assistance, and much more. Use this time to emotionally fortify yourself.

When you are ready, use the wax or liquid glue to seal the vessel. This seals your intention of escape and liberation from whatever circumstances confine you. If you keep faith to a spirit or deity you wish to call upon for assistance in your endeavor, you may do so at this point. Keep your sealed vessel in a safe place until you have made your escape.

When you have taken flight and made your escape, break the seal and scatter the organic ingredients in a wild, free place. If using inorganic ingredients such as metal or plastic bracelet charms, it is ideal to thank, cleanse, and save the charms for another use.

Notes:

Magic can be a useful tool, but it doesn’t work all on its own. If you make no effort to get yourself out of a quagmire, then of course this spell (and any other) is going to fail. That said, you are not alone in your struggles. Please feel free to use any of the resources below that are applicable to your circumstances.
