Spider-Verse Artists Say Working on the Sequel Was ‘Death by a Thousand Paper Cuts’

Why don’t more animated movies look this good? According to people who worked on the sequel, Across the Spider-Verse, it’s because the working conditions required to produce such artistry are not sustainable.

Multiple Across the Spider-Verse crew members — ranging from artists to production executives who have worked anywhere from five to a dozen years in the animation business — describe the process of making the the $150 million Sony project as uniquely arduous, involving a relentless kind of revisionism that compelled approximately 100 artists to flee the movie before its completion.

While frequent major overhauls are standard operating procedure in animation (Pixar films can take between four and seven years to plot, animate, and render), those changes typically occur early on during development and storyboarding stages. But these Spider-Verse 2 crew members say they were asked to make alterations to already-approved animated sequences that created a backlog of work across multiple late-stage departments. Across the Spider-Verse was meant to debut in theaters in April of 2022, before it was postponed to October of that year and then June 2023 owing to what Entertainment Weekly reported as “pandemic-related delays.” However, the four crew members say animators who were hired in the spring of 2021 sat idle for anywhere from three to six months that year while Phil Lord tinkered with the movie in the layout stage, when the first 3-D representation of storyboards are created.

As a result, these individuals say, they were pushed to work more than 11 hours a day, seven days a week, for more than a year to make up for time lost and were forced back to the drawing board as many as five times to revise work during the final rendering stage.

"For animated movies, the majority of the trial-and-error process happens during writing and storyboarding. Not with fully completed animation. Phil’s mentality was, This change makes for a better movie, so why aren’t we doing it? It’s obviously been very expensive having to redo the same shot several times over and have every department touch it so many times. The changes in the writing would go through storyboarding. Then it gets to layout, then animation, then final layout, which is adjusting cameras and placements of things in the environment. Then there’s cloth and hair effects, which have to repeatedly be redone anytime there’s an animation change. The effects department also passes over the characters with ink lines and does all the crazy stuff like explosions, smoke, and water. And they work closely with lighting and compositing on all the color and visual treatments in this movie. Every pass is plugged into editing. Smaller changes tend to start with animation, and big story changes can involve more departments like visual development, modeling, rigging, and texture painting. These are a lot of artists affected by one change. Imagine an endless stream of them."

"Over 100 people left the project because they couldn’t take it anymore. But a lot stayed on just so they could make sure their work survived until the end — because if it gets changed, it’s no longer yours. I know people who were on the project for over a year who left, and now they have little to show for it because everything was changed. They went through the hell of the production and then got none of their work coming out the other side."

I've just played through Gortash's coronation with and without Karlach in the party and the difference-

Like when Karlach is in the party Gortash puts on a mask of composure and authority. Durge is still favorite assassin and all, but 'Lord Gortash' needs to maintain presence.

And then it's just Durge in the party and Gortash is a fucking smiling giggly mess. I can't express how freaking giggly he looks at EVERY second of the convo. Literally "blushing, giggling, twirling hair" kind of a vibe.

And WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK is that? How I'm supposed to NOT align with him??? How my Durge is supposed to not be immediately compelled to destroy the world just so this man kept looking at them like that?

i don't watch k dramas or really tv at all. but i saw this picture of these guys from love mechanics? or whatever its called

boothill brain rot !

he's got a knack for alcohol, typical of him to be spotted in a bar.

you make the usual drink, saying that he's drinking too much again- all he does is flutter his long lashes and asks for another strong one.

he says something like "you call this a drink? c'mon now, surprise me." his voice is roughly spoken- you're guessing it's the voice module in his throat.

'soul glad, make it strong' he'd order, head slumped on the countertop. he doesn't really get drunk since he's basically not human? but also because his systemic drive doesn't have the proper function setting for it.

he really needs an upgrade. maybe you could work as a technician instead of a bartender? ‘what'd ya say huh?’ he remarks with a fist on his cheek while lazily watching you do your job.

for once you carelessly agree to his rambles, as for him, he's already busy eyeing the payphone a few meters away from the bar counter.

"hold on darlin’" he begins to stand, his long legs in view before setting the cup on the marble, "gon' phone someone. this one's urgent you see."

you could see the expression on his face, irritated but it disappears after he sends you a quick wink, tipping his hat a little before walking away from where you stay wiping the glass.

"weird." you mutter as you get ready to clock out for the night. it's stormy out- the sun long gone and the only thing you see is lightening and rain.

you could hear boothill threaten someone over the phone- it was obvious that he was trying to keep his voice hush but that didn't stop you from hearing a few lines though, "my bullets will find you.. until then, you best find a casket store on penacony."

decidedly, you ignore it. probably nothing.

you see him slam the phone down in it's handle and a few occupants look at him, immediately turning their heads away unbothered. boothill makes his way over to the bar counter once more, settling down on one of the stools.

"right, give me one more felblood energy before i hit the hay," boothill eyes you up under his hat, seeing you pack your things.

"ya leavin'? look outside, the weather s'all muddy and dangerous. can't leave just yet sugar."

boothill snickers, downing the bitter liquid of felblood.

you narrow your eyes, "talk to me would ya? i'm the only patron left." he jabs a carefree thumb behind him, and you look at all the almost empty tables, a few men here and there but that's it.

"you should.. probably head back. it's late," you say, sighing because he wouldn't go away.

"sure," he sips the remaining liquid, "join me?" his teeth are now on display, sharp whites grinning as he looks at you with a calculating stare.

you huff a scoff- ears turning warm at his suggestion. boothill took note of this, and chuckled.

"just pullin' your leg." with one last snort, he rises from his seat and pays his tab.

"keep the change." boothill salutes as he bids farewell.

you watch him walk away, probably to one of the guest rooms- and you look at the cash on the table, 50 credits and an extra 100 as tip.

under all that money, something caught your eye- a small note in between that says 'stay for the night' with the room number written in messy handwriting.

you might wanna take him up on that offer.
