Always Been You (Dick Grayson x Reader) - Chapter 2
Tumblr media
Always Been You (Dick Grayson x Reader) Reader Insert: she/her pronouns Word Count: 5030 Warnings: death, violence, fighting, bloody wounds, angst, infuriatingly oblivious love interest, slowburn Spoilers: Young Justice Seasons 1-3 plot partially, but it ended in 2022 so catch up.
Y/N Prince - miracle daughter of Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor - and Dick Grayson - first adoptive son of the Batman himself - have been best friends since day one. They went to school together, trained together, kept each other's alter ego secret from everyone else, and they founded the Young Justice alongside their friends together.
But as time progressed, Y/N and Dick grew up and Y/N found herself wanting more than friendship with Dick. But he never seemed to indicate that he reciprocated her feelings. And when Wally died and Dick abandoned the team, Y/N realised he never would. So she heads to the one place she knows will help her become a stronger warrior so that one day she can take her mother's place: Themyscira.
Two years after his leave, Dick reaches out to his old friends to help him with a mission. But when he finds out Y/N left too, he chases after her in the hopes to bring her back.
However, when the two finally reunite, it isn't as warm as he hopes. Not to mention Themyscira becomes under siege as they go to war against Echidna, the Mother of Monsters in Greek Mythology, and her army of monstrous children.
Will Dick and Y/N be able to put their past behind them and save the Amazonians' homeland? Or will they fall, unable to tell one another their true feelings?

(6 Months Later)
Dick Grayson looked up at the Carr family home from his car, apprehensive to open the door just yet. It was a nice home, and from the research Dick did, a nice family lived there too.
His eyes trailed to the apartment situated above the garage, imagining the people who were inside. How were they going to react when he told them what he was there for? Scratch that, how were they going to react when they saw him?
'Should I go take a nap or are you going to man up and go inside at some point?' Oracle's sarcastic voice came through the car's bluetooth.
Dick clenched his hands around the steering wheel. Barbara - newly named Oracle - was right. It didn't matter what his friends were going to say. He needed their help, and he needed to man up.
Dick finally unbuckled his seatbelt and opened the door. 'I'll call you when I'm done,' he said, then ended the call before Barbara could sneak in another witty remark.
He made haste running up the Carr's driveway, then up the stairs to the apartment above the garage. As he raised his hand to knock on the door, he heard laughter and lively chatter that made him pause. An overwhelming sense of guilt and shame and longing surged through him. Was he really going to break up the joy beyond the door? Once upon a time he would've been glad for a party, for a break from work and his vigilante duties.
His mind flashed back to that first party him and his friends had in Mount Justice. It was Wally's birthday and he had been lapping up all the attention, especially from M'gann, who had made him a cake and had in fact organised the whole party. This was before Wally realised him and Artemis were meant to be, same with Connor and M'gann.
But Y/N had known, had even pointed it out to Dick as they sat in the corner just the two of them, watching everything play out.
'They're all so thick,' Y/N said, taking a sip of her lemonade, trying to hide her knowing smile.
'How so?' Dick asked.
Y/N rolled her eyes. 'Can you not see?' She grabbed Dick's chin and guided him to look at Connor and M'gann interacting awkwardly but in a cute way, then Wally and Artemis "fighting", matching wit for wit with every snarky comment they threw at each other. 'Connor and M'gann are so into each other, and you could cut the emotional tension between Wally and Artemis it's so thick. They are all crushing hard.'
Dick watched the two couples interact a little longer and realised Y/N was right. 'Well would you look at that,' he said, turning back to Y/N. 'You're quite the observer, aren't you?'
Y/N chuckled. 'Dick, we've been best friends for three years now. If you're just figuring that out now, then you're just as thick as the rest of our friends.'
'Hey! I am not!'
'Are to.'
'Am. Not!'
'Are. To!'
The two fell into hysterical laughter, gripping onto one another so they didn't fall to the ground.
Y/N's smile came to him then, and the longing in his chest ached even more. She was more than likely beyond the door too, laughing and smiling without a care in the world. He suddenly had the thought that he couldn't go through with it. He couldn't possibly ask them - couldn't ask her - to help him. Not after what he'd done...
Before he could chicken out completely, he forced himself to knock lightly on the door.
'I'll get it,' M'gann's sweet voice called out to whoever she was with, and Dick prepared himself as he heard her walk to the door.
M'gann opened the door, and she was smiling, the remnants of laughter twinkling in her eyes. She was in her human form, but it had changed since the last time Dick saw her. Her ginger hair was now cropped just under her ears, and her features were sharper, more refined than that of a young adolescent. She wore a flattering white blouse and casual jeans, not bothering for shoes in her own home.
She was grown up. In just two years?
Her brown eyes locked with Dick's blue ones, and immediately her smile dropped as shock froze her face.
Dick offered her a small smile 'Hi, M'gann,' he said softly.
'Dick...' was all she could manage as she continued to look at him, eyes raking over him as if she were imagining things. 'What are you doing here?'
'Honey, who is it?'
Dick's guilt deepened at the sound of Connor's voice. The Superboy himself came to the door when M'gann didn't answer, and stopped in his tracks as soon as he laid eyes on Dick. But he didn't stay shocked for long.
Connor furrowed his eyebrows and stepped up behind M'gann, placing a protective hand on her shoulder. 'What are you doing here?' he asked icily, eyes solely focussed on Dick.
It hurt to see such distrust in his old friend's eyes, but Dick somewhat expected that. 'Nice to see you too, Connor,' he said, slipping into his casual, carefree persona easily. If there was one thing Dick was really good at, it was putting on a mask. 'I was in the neighbourhood and thought I'd swing by. It's been a while.'
'Why don't you answer my question first before you start acting like nothing is wrong,' Connor suggested, his voice taking a deep threatening tone.
'Connor, please,' M'gann said, seemingly getting over her initial shock. She placed her left hand over Connor's on her shoulder, and that's when Dick saw the shiny diamond ring on her finger. 'He's our friend.'
Dick didn't think his guilt could worsen at those three words.
M'gann opened the door wider and offered him a small smile. 'Come in, Dick. We'd love for you to join us.'
Dick flashed her a grateful smile. 'Thanks,' he said as he ducked through the doorway. He then looked from M'gann to Connor and back again. 'Congratulations, by the way.'
M'gann looked confused for a moment, then a joyful twinkle flashed in her eyes as she looked to her ring, a soft smile gracing her features. 'Thank you, Dick,' she said. 'That's what we're actually celebrating. Come on, there is food and drinks this way.'
M'gann walked back towards the party, but Connor and Dick remained in the entrance, staring at one another.
Dick took Connor in. Because of his clone genetics, Connor never actually aged. Not physically anyways. He'd changed ever so slightly from when Dick first broke him out of Cadmus, only growing a centimetre or two every year or so. His muscles had toned more having entered his theoretical twenties, and but his face still held onto those baby features he'd had since being replicated as a teenaged Superman.
Dick sized himself up against Connor and shockingly found that, for the first time, they were looking at each other eye to eye.
Connor seemed to scan Dick, too, coming to the same conclusion that Dick had changed too since they last saw each other. Dick waited for Connor to say something, but when Connor was done he gave Dick a stone cold grimace then turned to follow M'gann.
'What a warm reunion,' Dick mumbled under breath as he followed Connor down the hallway.
The hallway opened into an open-floor plan that held the kitchen, the dinning room and the lounge. Dick expected a few more people to be waiting for them, but he only spotted Kaldur lounging on the couch, drink in hand. Being the vigilant person he was, Kaldur immediately recognised Dick and placed his drink on the coffee table as he stood up.
'Dick,' he said, teal eyes wide with surprise.
'Hey, Kaldur,' Dick greeted awkwardly, ready for the same cold treatment as Connor.
Instead, Kaldur's face broke into a warm smile as he manoeuvred around the furniture to make his way to Dick. 'Old friend,' he said as he embraced Dick. 'It has been too long.'
'It sure has, buddy,' Dick responded, returning his friend's embrace.
Kaldur released him, but kept his hand on Dick's shoulder as he scanned over him. 'Look at you! You seem to be healthy and strong.'
It was true. Dick had noticed he'd muscled up a little more since leaving the team, though still keeping towards the leaner side of muscular. He certainly wasn't has bulk as Connor, or Kaldur for that fact, who Dick noted also had more muscles and toned features. Kaldur certainly filled out the black button-up he wore. But, as it was with Connor, Dick was happy to see him looking directly in Kaldur's eyes as they spoke, not from slightly below as it had been since they were children.
'Thanks man,' Dick said. 'Been working out. I see you've been doing the same, Aquaman.'
'My King left some large shoes to fill,' Kladur admitted humbly. 'But thank you.'
'So you know of Kaldur's promotion, but couldn't contact him to say congrats when it happened?' Connor interjected from his place in the kitchen.
M'gann scolded him as she placed some plates on the dining table, but the mood had already changed to tense and quiet.
'Connor's right,' Dick admitted, addressing his three friends. 'I'm sorry. These past two years... I should've stayed in contact. I wanted to. But every time I went to, I convinced myself that you didn't want to hear from me. That it would be better to leave you all be while I try to figure out myself again.'
'Oh Dick,' M'gann started, walking around the table to pull him into a hug. 'Of course we wanted to hear from you. You're our friend and we missed you. But we understand that after Wally died, you had to take a break from everything.'
M'gann pulled away and then pointed an accusatory finger at him, looking extremely cross with him. 'But if you ever do anything like that again, I swear I will hunt you down and kick your sorry ass into another universe. Understood?'
Dick nodded vigorously. 'U-Understood.'
M'gann's sweet demeanour returned and she walked back to the table to continue setting it. The three men looked at her quietly as she went about her work, until Dick turned to Connor and said, 'Your fiancée is scary.'
Dick expected another glare from the Superboy, but he was gladly surprised when the dark-haired boy nodded in agreement, face slightly pale. 'You got that right.' He then shook himself out of his frozen state of fear to help his fiancée dish out their meal.
'Give him time,' Kaldur said quietly to Dick. 'You know how Connor can be with expressing his emotions.'
'Well, he's not as emotionally constipated as he once was, I'll give him that,' Dick said. 'Unfortunately, I don't think I have time.'
'What do you mean?' Kaldur asked.
Dick went to explain but quickly decided against it. Kaldur was in the Justice League now. Dick couldn't really explain what he was planning to do. Not yet, anyway.
'Forget I said anything,' Dick said instead, flashing his charming smile and wrapping an arm around his old friend's shoulders. 'For now, why don't you tell me everything I've missed. How is it being Atlantis' new champion, first starters...'
For the next hour, it was like old times. The four of them ate and laughed and swapped stories about what Dick had missed in the last two years. They recalled some of the good times they all shared when they were on the team, and Dick convinced himself for a brief moment that they could all stay like this. Happy, carefree, young.
But Dick had come to Connor and M'gann for a reason.
Once they'd had enough of dessert, Connor offered to wash up and Dick saw his chance.
'I'll help wipe up,' Dick offered, taking his and Kaldur's plates to the sink while Connor filled the sink with soap and water. Dick waited until M'gann and Kaldur were in deep conversation over on the couch that Dick decided to broach his intended subject. 'So, how is the team going?'
'The team is doing okay,' Connor answered flatly, never lifting his eyes from his work with the plates in the sink. 'I just try to help M'gann as best as I can. We're down a few numbers since your old man decided to take half of the Justice League and our team with him in his little stunt.'
Dick winced. He recalled getting the call from Tim about it about five months ago. It had been an orchestrated walk out from over half the Justice League and their protégés, all of them wanting to go back to their vigilante ways as the League and the team had become somewhat irrelevant. Those that remained never saw it coming.
'I'm sorry about that,' he apologised, though he wasn't entirely sure why. Just felt appropriate.
Connor looked at him briefly, hands pausing in the sink as he did, and then released a sigh of defeat. 'Don't be sorry, Dick. It's not like you had anything to do with it.'
'No,' Dick agreed, 'but I should've been there at least. I should've reached out to see if you were okay. We started this team together, I shouldn't have just left it all to you.'
'Well, I know the rest of the team would really appreciate it if you came back now,' Connor said, his tone hopeful. 'That is, if you're ready to come back.'
Dick's heart lurched at the thought of going back to the team, both with want and terror. He liked Barbara, he really did. But, if he were being honest, he'd missed being a part of something bigger than himself and his own agendas.
'Connor,' Dick started softly, looking to see M'gann and Kaldur still locked in deep conversation before continuing, 'I would love to come back. Please know that. But you should know I haven't just been idly moving about the place the last two years. I've been conducting undercover missions of my own with Barbara in relation to the meta-human trafficking crisis.'
Connor's eyes widened and Dick saw he was about to raise his voice so leaned in close and hurriedly whispered, 'Keep your voice down, please.'
Connor took a second to register what Dick had said before whispering harshly, 'What do you mean you've been working on your own? You should've come to us if you were getting involved.'
'First of all, I just said I had Barbara helping me, and secondly because the team and the Justice League are full of public figures now. The missions wouldn't work if they got involved. But I've actually come here to ask you for your help on a mission, Connor.'
'Me?! Why would I-'
'Let me explain. First of all, it'll be you, me, Artemis-'
'You've pulled Artemis into this too?! Where the hell has she been, anyway?'
'Would you stop interrupting me for one second?' Dick hissed, wiping up a plate or two before returning to the conversation. 'As I was saying, from our intel, Markovia's Princess Tara has been found dead. Killed by a meta human supposedly, and I have a sneaky suspicion someone has been testing on people with the meta gene, turning them into extreme versions of their meta abilities. I need your help to find out who. As I said before, I've convinced Artemis to help already, and I was looking to you, Jefferson, and Y/N to make up the rest of the team.'
Dick looked around the room, looking at how empty the couches were around M'gann and Kaldur and sudden thought struck him. 'Speaking of which, where is Y/N?' he asked. 'I would've thought she'd be here celebrating the good news.'
He'd forgotten to keep quiet that time, and so Kaldur and M'gann looked at him alongside Connor, all looking as if Dick had sprouted three heads.
'What?' Dick asked, patting around his face. 'Do I have sauce on my face?'
'You don't know?' M'gann asked, sounding almost on the brink of tears.
That's when Dick realised something was majorly wrong, and his gut twisted with fear. 'Know what? Where's Y/N?'
'Y/N, she...' Kaldur started, then took a deep breath before continuing, 'Y/N left the team, Dick.'
'What?' Dick said, almost dropping the plate he held. 'What do you mean she left?'
'She left about six months ago,' Connor answered, washing up the last plate and emptying the sink. 'Before everyone else left. She felt like she wasn't doing enough with us anymore, so she just... left.'
'I've sent her plenty of messages,' M'gann said, 'but she hasn't answered any of them. And I can't sense her at all in the country. Even the Watchtower couldn't find her.'
Dick couldn't believe this. Y/N was gone? 'So Wonder Woman doesn't even know where she is?'
'Wonder Woman has been busy running the Justice League since Batman resigned,' Kaldur answered. 'Even if she did know where her daughter was, I don't think she'd like us to know, and I would have to agree.'
'Why?' Dick asked, suddenly very angry at Kaldur for not being as concerned as he was about Y/N. 'Do you know where she is?'
Kaldur shook his head. 'Regrettably, no. But when we last spoke, she sounded like she didn't want to be found. That she would come back to us when she was ready. I think we should respect that.'
Dick shook his head in disbelief. 'No, that's not like Y/N. She wouldn't just leave anywhere without telling anyone.'
'What, you mean like you?' Connor asked, and that cold stare was back.
'I mean she is loyal and empathetic. Surely she would know how her absence would affect the team,' Dick continued, ignoring the personal dig.
'She was loyal, Dick,' Connor countered. 'She was loyal, and stuck around with M'gann, Kaldur and I until the team got back on its feet. She held the team together when we were on the brink of falling apart. But you wouldn't know that because you weren't here.'
Dick wanted to argue but found that he couldn't. What he had thought was the best for the team turned out to be the complete opposite. He could sense it now; his relationships with his oldest friends were no longer as they were.
'You were gone for two years,' Connor continued. 'You'd be surprised as to how much a person can change in that time.'
The day Dick left flashed in his mind, and he recalled the pain in Y/N's eyes when he left her behind. He remembered how she'd held it together, but he knew she would probably cry about it later because she'd done it some many times before, always going to him to cry on his shoulder.
But he wasn't there that time. He'd left her all alone to dry her tears.
You're my best friend. Always have been. Always will be...
Dick looked to his friends again, but they could barely meet his eyes. Kaldur was disappointed, Connor was angry, and M'gann was just sad. An apology bubbled up in Dick's throat, but he didn't think it was sufficient enough for what he had done to them.
'I have to find her, then,' Dick said into the quiet room, and finally they all looked to him.
'Did you not just hear Kaldur?' Connor asked. 'We should leave her alone like she wants.'
'We don't necessarily know that,' Dick countered. 'Besides, this isn't about bringing her back. This is about me making things right with her.'
'But what if Kaldur is right?' M'gann argued. 'What if she doesn't want to be found. Maybe the right thing to do is leave her alone?'
Dick shook his head. 'She's my best friend, M'gann. I can't accept that she wouldn't want to see us ever again.'
'Maybe she doesn't want to see you, have you considered that?' Kaldur asked, his voice taking on a protective demeanour. 'The bottom line is, Dick, that you left her behind without a second thought. And she respected that, even if it killed her inside knowing that you would rather abandon her - abandon us - than face the pain of losing Wally together. She missed you every single day, and yet she still fought and trained and guided the team without faltering. And now, when she finally finds the courage to do what's best for her for once, you want to shame her for it?'
Anger surged through Dick, fiery and hot. 'I am not shaming her for anything. Do you not think I didn't think of you all every single day?'
'If you did, you didn't do anything about it, did you?' Connor mumbled, but Dick heard him just fine.
'Look, if you guys don't want to help me find her, fine,' Dick said, looking at all three friends pointedly. 'But I will find her. Because she needs to know that she was right. That I was wrong to leave and I am a terrible best friend.'
His expression softened as he looked down at his hands, imagining how long ago him and Y/N would link their pinkies. How simple friendships were back then.
'If she never comes back,' he continued, quieter this time, 'then I won't blame her. But best friends don't give up on each other.'
It was quiet for what felt like an eternity. Until Kaldur walked up to Dick and grabbed his shoulder comfortingly.
'You may be a terrible best friend,' Kaldur said, a small smile warming his face. 'But that doesn't mean your heart isn't in the right place.'
'Thanks, Kaldur,' Dick said, patting Kaldur's hand upon his shoulder.
Kaldur dropped his hand and the four of them sat down on the couches. 'Y/N didn't tell me where she was going,' Kaldur started, 'just that she needed to find out who she was again.'
'I don't follow,' Dick said.
Kaldur chuckled. 'Don't worry, I said the same thing to her when she told me. But she also said something along the lines of, "I need to find out where I've come from to find out where I will go.".'
'What the hell does that mean?' Connor asked.
'Again, not sure. But when I asked her the same question, she said she had to go back to her roots,' Kaldur elaborated. 'Something to do with where it all started. And her mother...'
Dick contemplated all of Kaldur's recollections, juggling each statement over one another to try and make sense. It was so vague, but Dick could sense there was a blatant truth staring right at them if they just looked hard enough.
Where it all began... Where she's been... Her mother...
The answer hit Dick like a brick wall.
'Themyscira,' he said softly, then more confidently. 'She's gone to Themyscira.'
'The Island of the Amazons?' M'gann asked. 'Are you sure?'
Dick nodded. 'It has to be. That's where Wonder Woman is from, and Y/N mentioned all the time when we were kids how much she wanted to go visit it one day.'
'But isn't it hidden?' Connor interjected. 'I mean, that's why they haven't gone back right? Anyone who leaves the island can never find it again.'
'Wonder Woman must've had something to help her remember,' Kaldur offered. 'Or at least guide her back home. I would suggest we go ask her, but again, I doubt she would tell us anything.'
It was like nothing had changed. The four of them had slipped back into theorising and planning and bantering as if no time had passed, as if no one had left or been promoted. It warmed Dick's heart at the thought that they all wanted to help find Y/N, even bring her home.
But Dick shook his head in dismissal. 'You guys don't have to worry yourselves over this. It sounds like I'm part of the reason she left in the first place, so it's my responsibility to find her and make this right on my own.'
'While I agree that this is partially your fault,' Connor said, earning a slight slap from M'gann beside him that he barely flinched at, 'Y/N's our friend too. The least we can do is help you find her.'
Dick smiled gratefully at his friend, who gave him a nod in return which was a start. 'Okay then...' Dick brought his watch up in front of his chest, clicked a few buttons before bringing up a large holographic screen with Barbara on it. 'Can you see us, Babs?'
'In quality HD, as well,' Barbara replied with a witty smile. 'Now, what can Oracle do for you?'
'We're trying to find Themyscira,' Dick explained. 'But it's not on any maps that we know of. Anything in any history records? Sailor sightings while out at sea?'
'You're asking me to find a mythical island from greek mythology that is meant to be hidden from Man's World and is forgotten by any who leave it?' Barbara asked incredulously, but then began typing ferociously on her end. 'Yeah, sure. No problem.'
Dick and the others waited in silence as Barbara worked her magic, files and maps and illustrations of the island popping up all over the screen around her face. After a minute or two, she spoke again.
'Okay,' she began, 'according to maps, you're right, the place doesn't exist. Even old sailors from Ancient Greece don't have any records of the place. However, I did find some similar tales being published in short stories of greek mythology and sailing journals. And all of them mention a couple of times sailing near what has now become the mouth of the modern Terme River in what we now know as Turkey, and having a strange sensation wash over them about danger. Each and every one of them have been convinced there is danger ahead and have turned away.'
'But they're just stories,' Kaldur argued. 'How can you be sure that what they speak of is the Island of the Amazons?'
'Ease up, Aquaman. I'm getting there.' A few more clicks and taps and Barbara brought up a picture of a very odd looking fish. 'Do you recognise that at all?'
Kaldur stared at the fish for a moment, contemplating its odd structure. 'I don't recognise it as a species,' Kaldur said. 'But I do recognise parts of it. It is like... different fish species have been spliced up and put back together to form this.'
'Exactly,' Barbara said, tap and clicking fervently again. 'This is a fish that has been found not near Turkey but close enough, and on multiple occasions. Now, if we isolate all these fish types... and then map out where each species usually resides... then find the crossover point for all of them...'
Dick watched diligently as Barbara isolated the fishes, highlight on the world map which species resided where, then drew lines horizontally and vertically, then zoomed in on the section the two lines crossed over.
'And there you have it,' Barbara offered proudly. 'The mouth to the Terme River in Turkey. You're welcome.'
'That makes sense,' M'gann said, looking up at the map, intrigued. 'If Themyscira is supposedly this pocket of space no human can find, then it makes sense that sea creatures of different genetic combinations would be able to breed there in peace, more than likely living there except for the stray pod or two that wander off into the open ocean.'
'I would have to agree,' Kaldur said, fascinated by it all as well. 'Who knows how many sea creatures live in harmony there.'
'Well, I'll be sure to find out when I get there,' Dick said as he stood up. 'Thanks Babs.'
'Any time,' she said, then the call ended.
'Wait, you're leaving now?' M'gann asked as Dick made his way to the front door.
'This cannot wait, M'gann,' Dick insisted, opening the front door. 'I have to speak with her as soon as possible.'
'Hey.' Dick was forced to stop when Connor grabbed him by his bicep, bringing the two of them close enough Dick could feel Connor's breath on his cheek.
'Are you really doing this for Y/N's sake, or for yours?' Connor asked in a hushed voice. 'Because whatever mission you think you need her for, I can assure you it cannot be more important than your friendship. Do you understand?'
Dick didn't quite understood what he meant, but he nodded anyways, and Connor let him go.
M'gann and Kaldur stepped up beside Connor as Dick made his way down the apartment stairs and back to the car. M'gann wrapped her arms around Connor's waist as he embraced her with one arm over her shoulder.
'Good luck, old friend,' Kaldur called out. 'May your journey be safe and successful.'
Dick chuckled as he waved farewell. 'I know you've always been well-spoken, but is it now a job requirement as Aquaman to sound like Gandalf?'
Kaldur pulled a face that Dick and M'gann laughed at, and Connor cracked a smile at the slight burn. Before he could psyche himself out of it, Dick hopped in the car and took off towards Wayne Manor.
'Call Alfred Pennyworth,' Dick spoke loud and clear, and the car immediately began ringing.
After a few rings, Alfred promptly answered the phone. 'Master Dick, what a pleasant surprise.'
'Hey, Alfred. Is the Batwing free at the moment?'
'I've just given it a deep clean now. Why?'
'Excellent. Could you please prepare it for take off by the time I reach the Manor? I have a little excursion I have to go on.'
'Will that excursion bring the Batwing back in one piece, Master Dick?'
'...I'll be there in twenty.'
Dick promptly ended the call, not waiting to hear a scolding from Alfred. Those were never fun.
Truth be told, he wasn't sure what to expect when he went to Themyscira. But Steve Trevor did it once, surely it could be done again.
Either way, it was a risk Dick was willing to take to get his best friend back.

THE CAST'S HALLOWEEN ATTIRE!
🎃Yuji in a tiger onsie and his usual sneakers with black face paint on for the whiskers and the nose.
🎃Megumi as wolf boi with just a wolf ears headband on … he was willing to put those on for his Yuji bae and that's all you're getting.
🎃Nobara as OUAT Aurora with a sword because she is a cute badass.
🎃Maki as OUAT Mulan because I like her warrior armored suit. Blame the fanarts I've seen.
*Plus seeing fanart of those OUAT girls together made something click.
🎃Toge as the Mummy. Better that than automatically putting him in a sushi roll suit.
🎃Panda as Frankenstein's Monster. In the torn up black Frankenstein jacket, stitches painted on, Frankenstein bowler head wig, and bolts in the neck. It was either this or Killer bear.
🎃Yaga as Dr Frankenstein. Labcoat, gloves but with his shades still on. Makes perfect sense.

🎃Miwa as Emily THE Corpse Bride.
🎃Nanami as Captain America cause I got the idea from @TimieTate on twitter. But he keeps said cap off. He'll keep the shield just to see the fanboy within faces Yu, Yuji and Ino come to life.
🎃Yu Haibara as Iron Man cause I like Stony and it all fits now. Also he used face paint to add in the beard goatee combo.
🎃Ino as a zombie with the usual horror makeup with green skin, bloody cuts, and he's a cutie wanting brains~
🎃Shoko as Sally
🎃Utahime as Genderbent Jack Skellington with a Zero plushie.
🎃Momo as Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Just the poofy velvety black dress, witch's hat, It was the broom's fault.
🎃Mai as Salem Saberhagen/Cat. It's just in a velour jumpsuit with an attached tail, layered choker necklace, cat ear headband, and ankle boots.
🎃Todo as a crossdressed Takada … cause why not.
🎃Choso as Netflix's Castlevania Dracula, with his hair loose to match. Also because of the whole blood thing.
🎃Yuki as Lisa Tepes also from Netflix's Castlevania cause they're both independent and stubborn and it just made sense to have them pair up.
🎃Riko as Wednesday Adams
🎃Kuroi as Morticia Adams
🎃Toji and Shiu as Sam and Dean Winchester. Just wearing leather jackets, rustic shirts, torn jeans and boots for the rugged look. Doesn't matter who's dressed as who. They can both make either roles work.
🎃Noritoshi Kamo as Hellsing's Alucard
🎃Junpei as Ash Williams. OG Classic. With detachable chainsaw toy hand.
🎃Nanako as Mitsuri Kanroji
🎃Mimiko as Nezuko
🎃Tsumiki as Shinobu
*They all got the wigs and custom made toy Nichirin swords. Also because Tsumiki and Shinobu share the same seiyuu. It was either her or Yor from SPY X FAMILY. Lord knows Gojo, Geto and Megumi would never want to see this girl in that kinda getup; overprotective they are.
🎃Mei as Disney OG Ursula. They both have white hair and do business with high rewarding profits. I had trouble figuring out a costume for Mei, okay!?
🎃Ui as a Flotsam Jetsam Mashup. Devoted brother/minion, so be it.
🎃Kusakabe as a Scarecrow. Apparently he's a fearful man that is courageous when it counts. It all fits.
🎃Akari Nitta as OG Disney Cinderella. Cause why not? It's cute!
🎃Ijichi as Zorro. Be a brave badass, my man!
*Those two are doing a callback to A Cinderella Story; the OG one, where Sam is Cindy and Carter is Zorro. Ergo, neither pair are couples.
🎃Arata Nitta as just a bedsheet ghost. He's timid as hell according to his wiki so there.
🎃Satoru as Wassup Ghostface
🎃Suguru as Viper Ghostface
🎃You as OG Ghostface
*Cause I gotta put my favorite horror character of all time in this and seeing fanart of them as Ghostface is a big turn on~! Plus Gojo gives Wassup vibes. And Viper looked so cool for Geto. And yes you be representing the OG!
🎃👻🦇 🎃 👻🦇🎃 👻🦇🎃👻🦇🎃👻🦇🎃
Fall has come.
Warm colored leaves whisking in the cold blowing winds.
And so much rambunctious chatter teemed the atmosphere.
The annual Halloween carnival fair has arrived.
"Fushiguro! Let's go on that ride next!" Yuji cheered enthusiastically as the pair rode the flaming pumpkin head shaped go bumper car.
"Fine fine! Just keep your eyes on the – ACK!" Megumi grabbed those mochi cheeks of Yuji's to make him face forward, both jerking forward as they got slammed in up front by another go cart.
"Itadori-kun! Eyes on the road!" Junpei laughed.
"You two can get it on later, ya know~" Ino teased, grinning, innuendo jokes going hard.
"Ino-san, please don't egg him on." Megumi grumbled, bashfully avoiding eye contact.
"If he wants to, sure." Yuji made it all seem so simple.
"WHAT!?" All three exclaimed in shock, startling the other drivers and passerby, earning him a hard yank on his tiger hood.
Mingling outside a food booth
"Mmm, umai~!" Nobara's eyes lit up with actual stars in them as she eyed her crepe with bat and spider sprinkles paired with chocolate sauce. "Delicious and Insta-worthy~! Maki-san, what do you think?"
She smacked her lips in afterthought, eyeing the"With the black and orange dyed cone, matching sherbert ice cream gave off that spooky pizzazz to put one in the festive mood "Not bad. Too much though."
"Hmm … then finding the best cammable sweets for Maki-san is our goal for this all Hallows Night!"
"Don't go overboard, baka." Maki bopped her on her crowned head, endearingly smiling. "Cause we're burning all this sugar in our workout tomorrow."
Nobara saluted. "Yes ma'am!"
From down the road, sitting at a mini table set up outside another food both, Mai scoffs at the sight. "Maki, what do you see in that girl?"
Giving heated glares to some passerby that were giving cat calls to Mai, Momo "Your envy is warranted but not tonight. Now have a spooky berry." Momo plopped a bloody frosted one from her decorated strawberry coffin into her partner's mouth.
"Out of all the people, she chose to date … her." Mai muffled through her full mouth.
"I heard that, you know." The Kyoto pair looked up to see Mai's twin and her bae standing there; Maki a bit facially irked whereas –
"We BOTH heard!" Nobara's seething face was too close for Mai's comfort; Maki restraining her from going feral, though Mai looked undisturbed.
Oh? I didn't see you there." Mai's false smile had Nobara shooting steam out of her nostrils.
"She means well." Momo; understanding Mai's protectiveness over her twin, just sat there and ate those berries away.
The baseball struck gold as the bottle tower collapsed with ease.
"Alright Nanami-san! Perfect aim as always!" Haibara cheered, clapping before pointing at the prize he wanted hanging above their heads. "How many prize booths does that make now?" Haibara beamed, arms full of stuffed toy prizes.
"This would be the fifth one. I believe we've reached a moderate amount at this point." Nanami stated, adjusting the strap keeping the star spangled shield on his back, as they walked off with their reward.
"Yeah. This is more than enough for my sister. Thank you. So here." Picking up his latest prize, he handed the Iron Man chibi doll to his beau. "As a token to remember this night."
Nanami was so taken back by the gesture. "Then you keeping this one would even things up." He plopped that Cap chibi plush right on Haibara's face.
Haibara nuzzled the Cap plush with his cheek. "I'll follow you to the ends of the Earth … Kento."
God, Nanami's heart was getting ready to burst right outta him! "Yu …" Looking straight ahead, he shyly blushed as he kept a hand on Yu's back just in case. "I'll never forget."
On a park bench, viewing the fair from across the way, the two ruggedly dressed drinking buddies were hogging the bench.
"You know spying is a bad look for you, Zen'in."
"Shut it. It's Fushiguro now, remember?" And yet, propped against the back of the bench, Toji kept glancing at his wolf eared teen son walking with his fellow sorcerer buddies through the festive grounds evidently content regardless if he was smiling or not.
"Just go say to your kids already, you big old wuss."
Downing some booze, Toji sighed. "Nah. It's better this way. Besides, his two new papas would kill me in cold blood if I got even close."
"You're actually pissed you didn't get invited to their group gathering." Shiu drolled, getting bonked in the back of the head by Toji's half empty bottle.
"Still though, nothing like a drink and a smoke outside to spend the night away." Shiu mused, smoke slipping through his lips.
Toji's semi bored eyes suddenly became focused as they trained on a former target that now alluded to his sights after slipping inside one of the many houses of horrors littered around the fair grounds.
Holding hands tightly, Riko and Kuroi jolted and squeaked among the many other costumed attendees from every jump scare triggered by the gory horrifying figures coming every which way.
"Riko-sama, it's okay if you don't want to keep going."
"No! I can be brave through this! Just to rub it in those two's smug ass faces! I can do this – mmph!" She bumped into someone's back amiss her self encouragement. Looking up into the blackest eyes of Count Choso who bluntly uttered.
"Boo."
Riko's terrified screams didn't startle Choso in the slightest as she flailed, losing balance, and falling into Kuroi's arms.
"Sorry about him, Amanai-chan. Just trying to get him in the spooky spirit is all." Yuki's head popped out from behind him, apologetically smiling.
"An incarnated object … in the flesh!" She was as terrified as she was astounded at being in his presence, especially when he punched a screeching animatronic that got too close for comfort.
"Another former Star Plasma Vessel." Choso pointed out dryly.
"I chose my own path going forward of my own free will, same as you. No need to be so blunt about it." Riko stuck her tongue out at the somewhat irked hybrid man.
"Riko-sama, let's get going. We're holding up the others behind us." Kuroi cautioned.
"Yes yes, we're wasting precious time here! The night is still young after all!~!" Not wanting to get kicked out and sued by those running the house, Yuki dragged those three out to the exit, barreling through puzzled exclaiming normies.
In a mock up Haunted Mansion ride, Kokichi stayed stiff but flustered as Miwa held his hand, hugged his arm, and cuddled up next to him in their automatic carriage seat for two.
"Are you enjoying yourself?" She curiously wanted to know.
He nods, fidgeting a bit. "And you?"
"Yes … I'm with you, after all." Miwa's genuine smile spoke volumes to how true she meant it.
"Good." He kissed her cheek all feather-like, earning a glow from her face before she peppered his face all with lipstick kisses, to his dopey smiling face.
"Oh my precious students!" That alerted the two as they spotted their sensei tearing up, to which her date used her Zero plush to pat away those tears.
"Just ignore us. We'll keep mingling with our brethren, that's all." Shoko waved to them, lounging in the fake graveyard setting.
"Not if we get kicked out over it!" Utahime panicked.
"Eh, no big deal." Shoko's usual apathetic shrug.
"You promised me you wouldn't act like THOSE TWO – MMPH!" Utahime got shushed by a smooch. Zero's nose lit up red, smooshed in between them, pouting as they parted. "You don't play fair."
Shoko rubbed her nose against Utahime's, mixing her faded blue powder with her white face powder, smiling proudly. "You make it too easy."
Outside, in a corn maze, Toge was looking ahead over the tops, carried on Panda's shoulders,
"Tsuna Tsuna."
"Go right?"
"Shake."
"Got it. Oh, Yuta, why must you leave us in your wake!? We barely see him anymore! Now he left us behind in this maze!" Panda dramatically tearfully shouted to the heavens.
"Mentaiko."
Turning this and that way, they finally found Yuta. On the hay covered ground. With Rika laying atop him.
"T–Toge! Panda! Uh … I can explain everything! I – It was just a slip –!" Yuta sweated bullets.
"He still cushioned my fall. You're always looking out for me, Yuta, my love~!" Rika gushed.
While he remained calm on the surface; that and his mouth was covered in wraps, Toge was irked at seeing his close friend being smothered by his lifelong love.
"If you two wanted to be alone, all you had to do was say so." Panda suggestively said.
"Uh, that's not – AH!" Getting pulled up to their feet, Yuta blushed at how intense Inumaki's gaze held him with such devotion. Ruffling his hair, Toge was now turning red from what those wraps didn't hide, Yuta laughed a bit at the cute sight, before Panda bear hugged them all. "I – I missed you all too!"
Leaning against the fenced borders of the exit, Kusakabe-sensei stood beside his fellow Scarecrow; a display maybe but still, staying steer clear of any unwarranted hassle.
"Kids … naively enjoying normalcy despite our true reality. As long as I don't get screwed over in the long run, I'm –!"
A clown faced balloon got thrusted in his face.
"Take one. Enjoy yourself. I mean it."
Principal Yaga, handing out spooky themed balloons to adorably costumed kids passing by with their parents, still noticed the somber fear in his eyes. Speaking of kids –
"Come on, uncle! Mom is waiting for us!"
Yaga smiled at seeing Atsuya being dragged off by his Batman dressed nephew, willing to let his guard down for the little guy, a bat shaped balloon in his small gloved hand.
Mei cackling as money rained the sky. "Thinking you can trick me out of my wits," Men with wounded pride crumbled around her. "Only to be treated to my heart's content." They should never have bet straight outta their wallets. "Now that's what I call the best treat ever~!" She was that good at the shooting ranges. And darts. And slamming the hammer to ring the bell.
"Nee-sama, on top, as always~! Perfection~!" Ui applauded in his own odd unsettling way that only his elder sister enjoyed as she laughed madly.
Noritoshi hoped Miwa and the girls' choice of costume for him wouldn't make him feel so … out of his comfort zone. And yet, the various fangirls that adored the character he portrayed had them taking him up on both sides, hugging him arms and giggling nonstop at how fine he looked. Guess letting his hair down and loose made the look really sell. Still …
"I cannot tell if this is better than dealing with curses … or worse."
Getting dragged off to God knows where, an overwhelmed Noritoshi passed the masked Ijichi-san who was mesmerized by Nitta-san as the princess she is inside and out, twirling on the bridge. "I'll make sure not to lose my glass slipper~!" She cheekily jokes.
"I'd gladly carry you should you ever lose them." Ijicji bravely offered.
"Oh thank you Ichiji-san, but I'll manage. Right, Anata?"
All she got from the tarp draped ghost of her teen brother was jerky nodding and an "Eep!"
"He's really shy. But that makes him that much more precious to me~!" She hugged her startled embarrassed tarp brother.
It brought tears to Ichiji's eyes, sniffling. "Ah sibling love … so pure!"
And for Todo. Yeah, a Takada-chan Halloween themed concert was happening nearby. And yes he got tickets to see her. Cross dressed as his #1. The man will wear it with the utmost unbridled pride and joy for his Takada-Chan. And he'd lose it seeing her dressed as the best half angel half devil in history. "Pure and forbidden to all … the perfect balance … that's my Takada-chan~" He'd be on Cloud 9 yall!
SNAP!
"Ooh, another one!" Nanko cheered.
FLASH.
"New pose time." Mimiko softly suggested.
CLICK!
"Okay, one more!" Tsumiki added.
Posing and taking photos with cosplayers of their fave online idols in their demon slayer outfits was too much fun for all those involved.
"PHOTO BOMB!"
A Wassup Ghostface popped up above Nanako's head. Followed by a Viper one appearing between Mimiko and Tsumiki's faces. Startling away their cosplaying acquaintances.
"Our own papas giving us heart attacks, unbelievable!" Nanako complained.
"It was a good scare, though." Mimiko clapped a bit.
"It made my heart jolt right out of my chest!" Tsumiki exclaimed.
"Huh? Where's Mama, though?" Nanako asked.
"She's missing." Mimiko noted.
"I thought you three would all arrive together." Tsumiki reminded them.
Gojo pulled up his mask to beam at them. "Not to worry, girls. The Mrs is fine. Quite fine, actually~" Gojo's purring tone at how fine you looked in your costume did not go unnoticed as the girls mock gagging into their hands.
Geto also pulled his mask up to peck their foreheads. "You girls keep having fun…not too much, though." Geto wanted the best for his girls too, but not around unsavory company.
"Yes, Geto-sama." The twins kissed his cheeks before dragging Tsumiki off to rendezvous with Megumi's group.
The big question.
Where are you in all this?
Photographing the moments, of course.
Entrapping these precious once in a lifetime memories.
Looking over them all from afar, your tender smile gave way to a wave of attachment as tears pricked your vision behind that mask.
This fragile tender peace amiss this cursed world was what you sought-after.
Swaying from the overflow of sentiment, empathy and affection you felt for this found family had you shaking in your actual costumed boots.
"Tell me …" You felt his cursed energy appear immediately, hovering right behind you. "What's your favorite scary movie?"
You felt giddy, butterflies flocking your nerves, smiling nervously underneath your mask. "This one." You pointed at yourself. "Duh." You giggled as he glomped you from behind, lifting your mask off to see your red cheeked beauty. "Lord forbid I wanna remember this night, digitally and soulfully. Doing group hangouts takes lots of planning, coordination and effort – AAH~!"
You squealed as Satoru lifted you up bridal style, spinning you around, marveling at your form highlighted by the moon while the fair lights made your e/c eyes sparkle like the universe laid in your gaze. Matching his Six Eyes perfectly, hypnotized by them as ever, as he kissed you openly.
"Heaven sent … you truly are." Tuffs of his snony bangs tickled your forehead and nose as his face beamed with pride and joy, unbridled love stretched from both ends of his wide smile, all for you.
"An angel for our depraved souls," Feeling those giant clothes hands cup your cheeks from behind, your toothy smile looked up to see Suguru sharing the same twitterpated expression.
"Ghosts having guardian angels … huh. Who'd have thought?" Your attempt at joking only made them give loud, slobbering, open mouthed smooches all over your face as you became a flailing giggling mess.
"Selfie time~!" Satoru chirped as he took tons of them with his phone, lots of laughs and kisses exchanged amongst the many goofy, creepy, and ecstatic faces you three made.
When midnight would soon be upon you all.
"Looks like we're right on schedule." Suguru mused as you three saw everyone that you personally invited eventually convening where the end of the fair grounds and the park meet, fairy lights hanging among, between, and around the tall hanging trees, various spooky tune favorites playing in the background to set the mood.
"Precisely." You threw the heavy ginormous bag you brought with you.
You popped it with the signature cursed energized finger gun.
It rained candy for all assembled.
While some – Yuji, Panda, Toge, Yuta, Rika, Junpei, Ino, Nobara, Miwa, Riko, Yu, Todo cause his lovely Takada-chan's concert had ended early, Nanako, Mimiko, Tsumiki, Satoru who yes scrambled over to get some too – clamored for every piece they could get their hands on.
Others – the adults at least – had restraint or not much interest.
As the fireworks went off to signal the end of the night, so much lively chatter bounced off everyone in animated mayhem, and you could only stand there and watch in amusement, content, and peace.
You wanted to freeze this moment. As well as many others. From back then to going forward.
This world – this reality – was something else.
You found more meaning, a sense of belonging, and heart in being here.
You would shape, bend and change it all to make it the kind of world you wanted it to be.
One where you could protect the smiles of those you feel attached to. Keeping this little slice of semi-normalcy intact, this somewhat safe haven of a life.
And should any curses wreak havoc upon the city – they will be most active on this night after all – this league of sorcerers would exorcise the hell outta them.
Sitting down on the grassy grounds, you were lost in the glowing sight that you got startled as Suguru slung an arm around your shoulders, nuzzling your humming self with his own.
"Truly a memorable night. Well done, love~"
You two jumped as Satoru collapsed before you two, candy stains smearing his lips, but smiling too much to care. "Best Halloween thus far! But next year we gotta top it! We should throw a bash! At our place!" Satoru's eyes were crazed and high at that point.
"Satoru, no more sugar for you tonight." Suguru lightly scolded.
"But Suguru, I feel so good right now~!" You and Sugu sucked the sweetness right off Toru's lips. "Like that but more~! Please love~?" Those puppy dog eyes and pouty lips have you kissing his lips. "Thanks you two~"
Helping Satoru sit up enough to rest on his elbows, you three spent the moment relishing the youthful scenery. Satoru's head rested on your left shoulder, Suguru's head rested on your right shoulder, and you hummed at how warm and cozy and right it all felt.
Calling out to everyone assembled to do at least one group cheer before the clock struck twelve.
Finishing the night off with one last –
"HAPPY HALLOWEEN!"

@muffin-min I had to change blogs, so I don't have your original ask anymore, so I'll just tag you here and use screenshots!
You told me to go where I pleased after this conversation, so I did xd. I kept the conversation similar but replayed the scene with my own words. I hope you like it!
Also @pinkittwice you wanted a tag for this as well^^
[Navigation]
Tumblr media
"Ok. Me and Warriors will check in at the guest house. Hyrule and Legend will get potions. Four and Sky will get new weapons for Wild. Y/n and Twilight will get new food rations." Time stated and then locked gazes with the Champion and the Sailor.
"Wild and Wind."
They looked everywhere but at Time.
"Don't cause a scene like last time. No fire around buildings."
They begrudgingly nodded, wandering off to explore the area while the other groups set off to gather what they needed.
You watched them retreat with a little half smile, then locked gazes with Twilight, who just shrugged. "They'll get over it."
Snorting, you shook your head and passed the rancher. "Come on. The food's not gonna buy itself!"
Twilight rolled his eyes with an amused huff, joining you. "You don't say."
You smacked him on the shoulder, laughing. "Just let me have this."
Happy you got paired with Twilight, you strolled towards a cluster of stalls you've spotted earlier. You had really taken a liking to the Hero of Twilight, and you welcomed every opportunity to be able to get a little closer to him.
Little did you know he felt the same way.
Tumblr media
You've been browsing through the stalls of the market, Twilight already carrying a few new food items in his bags.
It was a lively place, with people shuffling all over and merchants giving each other shouting matches, trying to sell off their wares.
You had just stopped at another stall, looking at a few vegetables, when one of the merchants next to it started to yell.
"HEY YOU! YOUNG LADY!"
Confused, you looked around, then to the vendor, then to Twilight, then pointed at yourself.
He nodded energetically. "Yes! YOU! YOU'RE THE ONE!"
You blinked a few times, completely confused. "The one?... for what?"
What was he on about? You glanced at the rancher next to you, who just looked as lost as you were, shrugging his shoulders.
The man waved his hands around, gesturing intensely. "You're the one meant to be with me! My one and only future partner! So beautiful and graceful! I can already see it before my eye! A GREAT wedding! I knew as soon as I laid eyes on you!"
Your mouth fell open at his exclamation, stunned and at a complete loss of words. "I... what??"
The merchant nodded in approval. "I know. It's stunning to meet your soulmate. Of course, you'd be too flustered to say anything!"
He went around his stall, over to where you stood, and grabbed your wrist. "I bet you're going to look absolutely dashing in white! You should meet my family right now! They're going to adore you!"
You watched him in disbelief and started tugging on your wrist. He had a damn tight grip and was very much crazy to you. "No. Let me go. Now."
He ignored you, rambling on and on about his family and his delirious wedding plans, while trying to drag you along against your will.
"Let me go! You're making me uncomfortable!" You exclaimed, this time in a mix of annoyance and concern.
No response. Only more rambling. People were already starting to look your way to see what the cause of this ruckus was.
You were just about to protest again when someone grabbed you and pulled you behind them.
It was Twilight, who had watched the scene with growing displeasure.
"And who are you supposed to be?" The salesman asked in annoyance.
"I'm their friend." Twilight stated in a sour mood.
The salesman just huffed. "Can't you see I'm busy planning our wedding?" He said while trying to grab you again.
In concerning speed, Twilight grabbed the man's wrist and twisted it away from you. His gaze was cold and sharp, disapproval showing clearly, as he held the merchant in place.
"They said No."
The clerk shrunk under the ranchers, intimidating eyes. "I- I'm sorry."
Twilight tilted his head, his upper lip lifting slightly, as if he was baring his teeth.
How dare this random guy lay a finger on you. You were supposed to be with him.
"I'm not the one you should be apologizing to."
You've never seen someone nod their head as quickly as this guy before, instantly turning to you.
"I'm really sorry for my behavior and for making you uncomfortable." He tried to bow as good as he could, still being trapped by Twilight's iron grip, glancing at the rancher nervously.
Twilight wasn't satisfied. "And?"
The salesman gulped audibly. "And it will never happen again."
You nodded, having watched everything until now. "Yes." You replied soberly. "It should never happen again."
With that, Twilight let the man's wrist go before pulling him in harshly by his collar, making you gasp. Hands already gripping onto his tunic's sleeve. "Twi. Please, the people are already looking at us weirdly."
Twilight locked eyes with you, his gaze softening instantly, and nodded with a deep sigh.
His gaze snapped back to the now trembling vendor, eyes practically spitting fire.
"If I ever see you anywhere near them again, you'll have to deal with me. And I won't let you get away this easily a second time."
With that, the rancher let go, and the salesman scrambled away as fast as he possibly could.
Twilight cleared his throat when you let go of his sleeve. "I'm sorry. I didn't want to cause a scene."
You softly huffed through your nose. And with a gentle smile on your lips, you stood on your tippytoes and placed a kiss on the hero's cheek. "It’s fine. Thank you for scaring him off."
Eyes traveling to where you've last seen the salesman, you rubbed the wrist that had been grabbed by him. "This was really creepy."
Seeking Twilight's gaze again, your lips lifted upwards again. "Let’s finish the shopping and then maybe take a rest at the river we saw earlier?"
Twilight smiled back, offering his arm to you, which you happily accepted. Maybe he'd shoot his shot with you sooner than he thought. It seemed he really had a chance.
"Anything for you."

Danganronpa Characters Who Would've Been Unlikely Friends If They Were In The Same Killing Game (Part 1 of ?)
While working on my ambitious, 48 character killing game WIP that includes the whole cast of Trigger Happy Havoc, Goodbye Despair, and V3: Killing Harmony, one very important aspect came to mind. How would some of these characters, who have never interacted in canon, respond to one another? What friendships would form from this? What rivalries could develop from this? Quite a few fics and people have managed to put a lot of thought into this concept (one of my favorites being the friendship between Kaito, Kaede, and Mondo, the rivalry between Kaede and Celeste, and/or the "friendship" Kaito and Gundham portrayed "Blackened Skies" by CSpratt and MrCynical on AO3, or the relationship between Angie Yonaga and the Warriors of Hope as discussed by one of my mutuals, @/theamityelf), so I couldn't help but feel inspired.
Thus, this post was born! So, let's begin!
Spoilers of the main three games below, you've been warned.
#1. Kaito Momota and Aoi Asahina
Tumblr media
Hear me out. First and foremost, just because Kaito has some traditional views on what it means to be a man doesn't mean he's this sexist, perverted, transphobic, homophobic incel of a loser some of you make him out to be ("That could've been me walking around in women's underwear"), so jot that down. Secondly, these two being friends would make SO MUCH SENSE if you think about it. They're both very optimistic (almost naively) about the circumstances, they both like to work out (Hina moreso than Kaito but I give Kaito a pass considering his condition), they both were willing to go to the extremes to end their respective killing games, and they both get so fed up with their respective antagonist-of-the-game that they decided to rock their SHIT. I can picture Hina deciding to invite herself to Shuichi and Kaito (and Maki)'s workout sessions and showing up all the boys. I'd imagine their dynamic would be pretty similar to the dynamic Hina has with Hiro, but much friendlier. They both are also willing to put trust into women that could kill them and are deemed dangerous among the rest of the cast.
I could also see Kaito being friends with Mondo and throwing himself into the sauna contest with Taka but given the events of Danganronpa S, that feels a bit obvious.
#2. Kiyotaka Ishimaru and Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu
Tumblr media
Fuyuhiko and Taka definitely start off on the wrong foot; Fuyuhiko won't open up and Taka initially wouldn't approve of Fuyuhiko's yakuza background. As Fuyuhiko's shell softens, Taka sees Fuyuhiko's own moral compass such as how he's against underage drinking, driving without a license, or underage sex. That, mixed with Fuyuhiko's more cooperative nature could make for a rather interesting friendship between the two.
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL FOLKS!
The familial pressure both Taka and Fuyuhiko deal with could be a great bonding moment for the both of them, especially since they're dealing with it in similar ways.
#3. Gundham Tanaka and Himiko Yumeno
Tumblr media
God, Spike Chunsoft, and Kazutaka Kodaka all knew not to put these two in the same game or they'd become an unstoppable duo. With Himiko's persistence of being a "mage" and not a "magician", there's only one other person who'd go along with the act and play along. And I can hear him now: "You've proven yourself to be a capable mage. But your spells are no match for the Supreme Overlord of Ice and the Four Dark Devas of Destruction". Eventually, I could see Himiko getting tired of Gundham's antics, before immediately backpedalling and continuing the bit if a character such as Kokichi called her out on it, and I think it'd be hilarious. Bonus points, Gundham becomes immediately obsessed with Himiko's tricks that involve her "familiars".

I've written a lot of this elsewhere, but today I feel like putting together a Very Long Post about how much I love Ram.
Tumblr media
From the variety of different Ram-related posts I've made, I guess you can tell that I've got the type of all-cylinders obsession that the most devoted fanfic writers get about their blorbos. Obsession on all levels, to include both "wanting to see him hugged and comforted through every step of unpacking his trauma" and "wanting to see him get the absolute hottest sex of his life, over and over until exhaustion."
Because we do that, here in fandom (horny and loving creatures that we are, ourselves). And he really does deserve all the good things he can get.
Ram... it's hard to explain WHY I love him so much. Why so MANY of us love him so much. He gets a lot of fan love for hIs comparatively small role in that movie, and I think it's a combination of things, the LAYERS of the movie, the subtle complexities that are never clear in canon... maybe never even thought about or planned by the scriptwriters, but still THERE.
There is of course a level on which he seems very innocent, pure, naive... (thinks doing actuary work at an insurance company is helping people, poor sweet summer child...) (/my cynical jaded pharmacy technician voice)
But at the same time.... He went from that clerical office job to being a warrior, and is GOOD at it. You don't really see him kill, but you know he must have. Many many times.
...okay, technically you do see him kill, once.
Collaboratively with Tron, when they derezz their Lightcycle opponent. And it's bizarre to see how much FUN he seems to be having in that moment ("So long, sucker!")
Maybe he's been oppressed by the Red warriors for so long that he really feels nothing but joy in killing them. Maybe he's feeling unusual joy in that moment because Flynn's just offered him a way out. Or maybe some programs just get taken over by a playful, campy energy when they're put in Gaming mode, even lethal games, even if it overrides their usual nature. I don't know.
Anyway, somehow, despite all he was made to do... Ram managed to keep some of that air of innocent playfulness.
And hope. And caring for others. Trying his best to comfort whoever needs it. At the beginning of the movie he was honest with Crom about what probably awaited him, but then he did his best to take Crom's mind off it by asking him what's going on outside-- that's the best he can do, even though it probably kills him on the inside that he can't help more.
Amd he is SO sensitive to others and what they may be feeling and needing (though this is shown in such small, understated ways).
There is that scene where he's alone with Tron in the cell, and says "the new guy was asking about you." We never actually saw Flynn ask Ram about Tron, and there isn't any obvious point at which he could have asked him offscreen. Pretty sure this was an unintentional plothole-- I think there was a line in the early script, but it was cut.
Which leaves me, in my ill-advised attempts at Watsonian interpretation, getting the (probably unintended) impression that Ram noticed that moment just before Flynn got dragged out of the cell. That moment where he was looking at the place where Tron had been before, and looked like he WANTED to ask, but didn't get the chance. And Ram saw him "asking" with body language, and remembered it.
Which, I don't care if they did that by accident, I find it damn compelling, okay.
And then Tron says he'll probably never get to meet Flynn because Flynn's in a match, but Ram says "you might, there's something different about him." Ram has some kind of perceptiveness about Unfamiliar Things In The System that even the security program lacks. He's shown with SUCH empathy and sensitivity... even if it's so subtle it might not be on purpose.
And ...gah, the tenderness of that scene where he holds hands with Flynn before derezzing.
I mean... aaaahhhh. it breaks my heart. He deserved better... And I know the scene feels less powerful after we write fix-it fic. But hey, there's the side of me that likes a good tragedy, and there's the side that wants everyone to live happily ever after, and there's enough possible universes to satisfy both.
I WANTED to see so much more about him.
There was SO much unexplored potential in the dynamic between his playfulness and Tron's seriousness. We know Tron can smile and be affectionate, but I wanted to see SO MUCH more of it-- and so much more of Ram getting to bring that side of him out.
He'd have been so good at it.
And now I'm gonna get into the horny side of things... because the horny side, to me, can also be an important part of what makes a whole, multidimensional character. (And also because I sometimes just feel like going into the horny side, which is fine too. I'm a complicated enough character myself.)
I talk a lot about my headcanons/theories, but I don't think of them as "canon" exactly. They aren't more "real" to me than other interpretations; they're just one possibility. (Or sometimes more. For a few things I have multiple contradicting possibilities I like to explore.)
As for Ram and his sexuality:
I think of him as gay, but in a weird Program-specific sense. Programs don't have genders in quite the same way as humans. There's the visual render, which is changeable, and underneath is a lot of energy and data that Programs can perceive about each other... some of it is analogous to human gender identities, but not all of it translates exactly.
I think what attracts most programs to each other is the inner energy, not the outer graphics. And in Ram's own experience I think he tends to be attracted to the energy of masculine programs (those whose programmers are considered men in the User world).
I think he's only felt this powerful attraction a few times, though. Certainly to Tron, and also to Flynn (really, that User-energy seemed powerfully attractive to all three of the programs Flynn befriended in there).
But I think Ram is still very free and generous with intimacy, even to those who don't attract him in that way. He's a kind soul by nature, canonically getting his own kind of empathetic pleasure ("great feeling") from helping people with their "needs."
And (in my own smutty but strangely wholesome imagination) I think this would extend to the Program version of sexual needs.
The first Tron fic I wrote was about Ram "comforting" Crom when they both realized Crom probably didn't stand a chance in the Games. I think Ram genuinely enjoyed this, and took plenty of pleasure in his own way, although the attraction was not the same kind he felt for Tron and Flynn.
In the "headcanon" I like to write, Ram did this often, because it was the only way he could think to help other programs in the cells and the games (when helping plan for their future seemed like a lost cause). ....I think when he's in this mode, he sees beauty in everyone, and takes pleasure in giving pleasure, no matter who it is.
But I imagine that the more intense attraction becomes active when it comes to being in a triad with Tron and Yori.
And this is because Ram is very attracted to the intimate connection that Tron and Yori have *together.*
He wants to be shared between them, because he sees their love as a powerful amplification of *Tron's* energy that he's so attracted to. And he's very excited by the idea of being swept into the middle of that.
Which is projection on my part.
I mean, when I got into Tron fic, I immediately latched onto a specific headcanon about how Program intimacy and attraction works, the one that most closely meshed with what I myself was into... which got me exploring some stuff about my own complex place on the sorta-queer, sorta-poly, gray-ace-gray-aro spectrum.
And Ram's feelings (as I imagine them) are a bit like my own experience of being poly.
At least, even though I'm probably somewhere on the aro-ace spectrum and don't have quite as much capacity for romantic love and sex drive as other people... a big part of what I love about having multiple partners is being close to the connections they have *with each other.* And this supersedes whatever inclinations I'd have towards "attraction" in a one-on-one sense.
Soooo yeah. Watch me project my whole self onto Ram, and then maybe get better at loving myself because of how much and on how many levels I love him. That's what being a fan is all about, okay.

Can you do the scene "he was my monster too"? That complete dialogue
Yeah, sure!
I love that line and scene (as every Darklina fan) because it really describes their dynamic. It's basically their relationship in just a few words and I'll explain to you why.
Tumblr media
I'll start from here.
The Darkling used various means to get her to his side in that scene. First he bargained, then appealed to her loneliness that drew him to her every time through the tether, then pointed out that Mal couldn't understand her and now she knows it, then used Genya to show her what happens every time she leaves him, then tried to make her understand that they could save more lives together and kinda chastised her for the fact that she's stuck on the Novokribirsk murders and doesn't look beyond that, towards the persecution that's happening on a global scale for so many years.
Did he use various manipulative techniques to get her here? Yes.
Did he also mean the things he said? Also yes.
The Darkling sees in her the very thing that first separated him from other people too so many years ago: the rare powers they both have and can't find someone else to relate to.
Also, the fact that he has been proven correct ever since he witnessed Alina growing distant from Mal and feeling more and more alone makes him believe in that line even more.
Who else has rare Grisha powers? The Darkling
Who else is immortal? The Darkling
Who else has been "separated" from all others because of these great powers? The Darkling
Alina knew it all along but has been denying it to herself, clutching desperately on Mal in hopes that everything will go alright between them. But now, when Aleksander speaks these words, she realizes how true that is. There is the person that in terms of power and needs she can match and relate with.
Tumblr media
I always believed that he wasn't only excited about having Alina's power in his hands here but also for the fact that she finally decided to willingly come to him. This is the first time that is happening ever since she left him on the Winter fete since she fought him every other time.
Her power is for his plans.
But her willingness and resignation are for him. He awaited this moment and wanted it for so long.
Tumblr media
The connection between Aleksander and Alina existed long before the latter got the collar. So I bet that the collar and the nichevo'ya bite only enhanced that connection.
They can "touch" each other's powers. Reach out and feel it. They're connected in such a deep and strong spiritual way. I don't think any other Grisha have ever experienced that with another of his kind. They truly were unique.
Tumblr media
Now these are the lines that are the basis of my "Alina feels embarrassed for her dark side and therefore afraid to admit that she wants the Darkling" philosophy and I will die on this hill.
Aside from the fact that this makes her an unreliable narrator, this is a major flaw of her character that Bardugo never fixed.
Alina, as every other person in the world, has light and darkness inside of her. But she's too afraid to admit it and, more importantly, even more afraid of embracing it. And that pushes her back. Instead of having this character accept her dark side and even using it at times on a moderate scale, we have her running away from it, never fully accepting it and presenting it as something disgusting inside of her.
Leigh could use this scene as the basis for her development. This and the "She would make herself a reckoning. She would rise" could be excellent premises of a girl becoming a strong woman and warrior, determined to save and lead her people and unite them with the otkazat'sya. Willing to become Queen just so she can make a change for the better and learn from the Darkling's actions and mistakes. Instead in R&R we got the same Alina. Again.
Tumblr media
Alina had darkness inside her long before the Darkling did something. For example, when she let those people die on the skiff. The Darkling just put the kind of darkness inside her that made her connected to the volcra, the Fold, the nichevo'ya. There's a difference here.
Now. About that line.
I've said it before that Darklina is a ship of contradictions: man and woman, light and dark, good and bad. They're two sides of the same coin and therefore complete each other. In a way, one cannot live without the other. And they each have a piece that the other lacks and still wants.
The Darkling has darkness and Alina is a creature of light. But she still seeks that darkness in him and when she used it, it felt right and powerful and not at all strange.
Alina has light and the Darkling is a creature of darkness. But he still searches for her light because, to his great surprise, he likes the feeling of it.
You can see this aspect of them in their following quotes:
‘And he was my monster too.’
- Siege and Storm
‘Because with her he was human again.’
- Rule of Wolves
Both of them don't want to admit it. They recoil from it but Alina can't help but feel drawn to his darkness, to his "monstrous" side just as much Aleksander can't help but be enticed by her light, by her humanity. They bring out a wave of emotions and needs to each other that upset them.
But if only Alina kept believing in that line and if only that relationship and this aspect of it was explored more. It's so painfully interesting that I can't believe how the author chose to spend her trilogy talking about Malina.
Like seriously? Them over THIS SHIP AND THE WAY THEY WORK??
WHO ON THEIR RIGHT MIND---

I was tagged by @queenofperv to
I am tagging @lesquatrechevrons and @kipaia and @kathsilver and @fierycavalier and literally anybody who can see this and wants to do it. Consider yourself tagged!
....and I couldn't choose just five so this one is PRINT CHARACTERS ONLY. Details on who they are and why they're included are under the cut. I hope there's characters you don't know here, and you can go find the books they come from! I promise they're all old AF
Aravan was never the protagonist. Aravan was ALWAYS the protagonist. Aravan's recurring role in the Mithgar series is probably the #1 influence on the way I look at characters. The series's earliest book (in-world timeline) is about When It All Went Wrong For Aravan, and the last book (in-world timeline) is How Aravan's Monumental Fuckups Saved The World. Aravan's story is How One Elf Spent Seven Thousand Years Heartbroken And Murdered His Way Across The World In Mourning and its the actual best.
I cut out the last 2 Sunday editions of Calvin & Hobbes and have them secreted away in my Memories box. Calvin is more and more of a shithead as I get older and Hobbes matches my vibes. And no it's not just because I have a tendency to bite. I quote Hobbes constantly and without thinking about it.
Artagel is the protagonists' love interests' brother and is perhaps the most perfect character every written. He's the Realm's Finest Swordsman and so of course he'll happily protect this weird stranger on his clumsy brother's behalf. And the man who comes to kill her beats Artagel, nearly kills him, and his entire life has to change. The Mirror of her Dreams is book 1, A Man Rides Through is book 2, and I re-read them annually because they're a tragedy of errors - from everyone, literally everyone makes massive fatal mistakes - that ultimately has a happy ending and I am ALWAYS here for that.
Belgarath. The Eternal Man. He's a drunk, a liar, a terrible father, a slouch, a thief, and unspeakably lazy. He's also the most powerful wizard in the world and a dude made his daughter cry. once. and what happened to that dude gave me literal nightmares for years. He's also World's Best Rascal Grampa and would be The Character Of All Time except for:
Silk. Prince Kheldar. Spy. Thief. Notorious weasel-faced man. In a situationship with what amounts to a viking warrior. Accidental half-brother to a king. Accidentally in love with his uncle's wife (and everyone should be, Porenn is a bad bitch). Quintessential rogue. The fact that he & Belgarath are from the same book series never ceases to amaze me. The first book, Pawn of Prophesy, was my introduction to fantasy when I was 8 or 9 and it set the stage for my literary preferences. Also shoutout to Leah Eddings, who in later years was given a byline although I don't know how involved she was in the first novels.

Outcasted - Chapter 2: Lessons and Learning
Summary: At sixteen, Neteyam has completed his iknimaya and is considered an adult. He's a warrior, finally allowed on the battlefield. They're perfectly on the path for them to win once again, something Neteyam is excited to be there for. Until, he's outcasted by his own father.
Neteyam's forced pick up what is left of his life and leave. Never allowed to step foot into his home again, he now has to navigate through learning to live anew, past relationships, and, the hardest, mourning.
Chapter Summary: First of lessons for Neteyam.
Pairing: Ao'nung x Neteyam
Word Count So Far: 4026
Notes: Wow! I definitely did not intend for this to take a month but I was busy writing a gift for my friend. This was fun to write. Actually a bit of a shorter chapter today but I'm really happy with it. I hope you like it and here's hoping to actually be back in 2 weeks lol! Chapter 1 and such at the bottom.
Tumblr media
Neteyam wakes the next morning to movement outside the entrance of his marui. He readies himself for the news of another attack until he remembers he’s not in the forest anymore. He’s in Awa’atlu and whoever’s outside isn’t there to come get Jake because somewhere there’s been an attack.
He quickly gets up, smoothing his hair and clothes in the process to make himself more presentable. He takes a glance outside at the window. The eclipse couldn’t have ended too long ago, there’s barely any light outside. Neteyam pulls opens the curtain to the Tsahìk standing in front of him with a basket.
Quickly, Neteyam signs the greeting. “Can I help you, Tsahìk?” he asks her.
“My son told me of your injuries,” the Tsahìk tells him. She takes a small wooden jar from her basket and hands it to him. “This should make the water more tolerable.” Without another word, she moves on, leaving Neteyam standing there as he stares at the jar in his hand.
The salve within the jar does help soothe the cuts on his arms. Neteyam sighs with relief as he rubs it onto the more irritated ones. He didn’t even realize how much of a pain they were being.
With his cuts being less irritated, it makes it easier getting ready for the day. As Neteyam adorns himself with his choker and armband, he briefly wonders if he even should. But then guilt seeps into his mind because Tuk loves both of them, so much so that Neteyam even made her a matching choker. She was wearing that same choker the day he left.
Neteyam keeps both on.
It’s too quiet, Neteyam muses as he fixes himself a small breakfast of the dried meat he has. Normally at this point, he and his siblings would be talking, joking, fighting. Then Jake would yell at them for fighting and they would all just bursting out laughing, ignoring him. After, Neteyam would go on patrol or whatever he had assigned that day. Today, they had planned for him to deliver supplies.
Neteyam almost lets himself keep going. Wander further down that path of reminiscing. But he reminds himself he shouldn’t. He shouldn’t dwell on that stuff. He couldn’t ever go back so what did it matter? Thinking about it would only hurt him more.
Tumblr media
A little later in the morning, the sun now shining much brighter, Ao’nung comes by to get him for their lessons. They walk side by side along the paths.
This morning doesn’t seem busy, Neteyam notices. At least, not yet. Just after midday, is when he remembers the village being the busiest.
As the two walk, they make conversation rather than walking in that awkward silence that both want to break but never do.
“They might have some expectations about you,” Ao’nung mentions, trying to sound casual. He turns his head slightly to Neteyam and smiles in a way that Neteyam almost recognizes. Though if Neteyam’s memory serves him right, that smile doesn’t mean anything good.
Neteyam looks to Ao’nung, confused. “What do you mean?” he asks.
“Well, my sister and a friend are waiting for us.” Ao’nung simply shrugs. “I was just telling them about how much a prodigy you are.” He then smirks. He smirks the same way he did when Neteyam and him first met, like an arrogant Olo’eyktan’s son.
For a moment, Neteyam stills. In that short sentence, Neteyam could see the Ao’nung he knew all those years ago. That cocky, arrogant skxáwng who couldn’t keep his mouth shut to save his life. He didn’t see much of that skxáwng last night though they didn’t really talk much. Perhaps it was too hopeful to think he had grown up.
Neteyam scoffs, playing along, deciding that if Ao’nung would act as a child so would he. “I’m not a prodigy at anything,” he says, full well knowing what Ao’nung means.
“Really? You do pretty good at that bow.” Ao’nung make a poor imitation of shooting an arrow.
“Yeah sure, my bow, not diving and breathing and whatever else.”
“You did fine last time.”
Neteyam rolls his eyes. “I better not drown because you think I don’t need help.”
“I wouldn’t let you drown,” Ao’nung defends himself. “Probably.”
“Hey!”
It’s just enough normalcy, if one could even call it that, that Neteyam can relax a bit. Feel more like an actual person. But it’s not the conversation itself. It’s the tone, the playfulness and sarcasm. It’s similar to a conversation Neteyam would have with his siblings on a morning like this.
While it’s four years since they’ve last talked, it doesn’t feel like any time had passed at all.
-
Awa’atlu is just as Neteyam remembers it. Sunny skies, humid air, the buzz of village chatter though that gets louder later in the day. There are few maruis and pathways that Neteyam doesn’t quite recognize however that could always be his memory failing him, he did spend most of his time outside the village, along the beach, when he visited.
Eventually, Ao’nung leads Neteyam to a dock where two people are waiting for them. Tsireya from the day before and another which Neteyam assumes to be the friend. He’s taller than Tsireya but definitely not at Neteyam’s height.
“There you two are,” Tsireya says as she waves them over. “Neteyam, how was your first night here? If you need anything at all, you can just ask.”
“It was fine, thank you,” Neteyam tells her. He then turns to the friend. “I don’t believe we’ve met, I’m Neteyam.”
“Rotxo. Ao’nung’s friend, just here to help and keep Tsireya company,” Rotxo says with a grin.
“It’s nice to meet you,” Neteyam says back. Out of habit, he almost sticks his hand out for a handshake before quickly reminding himself that they don’t greet each other that way. Not here at least.
“We should get started on the lessons,” Tsireya announces to them. “Not that you’ll need much of our help,” she jokes with a laugh as she gestures to Rotxo and herself. “Ao’nung has told us a little about you.”
“So I’ve been told.”
Tumblr media
The lessons aren’t necessarily hard. Just diving and breathing and figuring out how to swim which Neteyam has completely forgotten how to do in the years he’s been away. How does one even forget how to swim? However, the rest is easier.
It’s strange how well Neteyam remembers it. The deep breath right before diving. The way his heart slows as he floats under the water. It all so comforting in a way. Nostalgia, maybe. Though for some reason the way to actually propel himself through the water is lost to time. Also due to this, they mostly stay close to the surface of the water, simply practicing.
It would be entertaining to watch his siblings do this, Neteyam decides about halfway through his lesson.  He just tired enough to start letting his mind wander but not tired enough to start complaining. He could just imagine their faces as the water hits them and the realization that the water is, in fact, not like the fresh water at home.
If his siblings were here, he could imagine Tsireya teaching them. At least she would have something to do then. Neteyam knows as the tsakarem, Tsireya has many more important things to attend to rather than being one of the cheerers to Ao’nung teaching and Neteyam learning. It’s probably for the best that Rotxo did come along.
It’s about midday, just before lunch, that they finally call for a break. His three teachers all wander off and Neteyam’s left alone with the promise to meet up in an hour.
With a sigh, Neteyam walks back to his marui, set on figuring out how to feed himself.
Now with his bow, Neteyam has two choices. He could hunt in the forest, where he knows he’ll get food, or head for the sea and hope he stumbles across something. Though just as Neteyam’s about to choose, another options appears.
“Forest boy,” a very out of breath Ao’nung calls from the entrance.
“Did you run here?” Neteyam asks, confused and slightly amused.
“We wanted to invite you to lunch,” Ao’nung says, ignoring his questions. “Me and ‘Reya.”
“Are you sure? I feel like I’ve already intruded so much.”
“Yes, I haven’t shown where the hunting are or how to ride an ilu yet. I promise she’s fine with you coming.”
“Fine. But one of these days, I will repay you,” Neteyam promises as he sets his bow, arrows and quiver back on the wall.
“Repay us?” Ao’nung asks, confused, stepping into the marui.
“I will make you something to eat. A meal,” Neteyam explains
“Wow, baby fang, didn’t know you were a cook.”
“What’s with all the names? Finally remember them from back then? Maybe, I’ll have to do the same.”
“You wouldn’t dare,” Ao’nung jokingly says with a laugh. He turns and walks out of the marui, presumably wanting Neteyam to follow.
“We’ll see,” Neteyam says as he follows Ao’nung out of the marui. “Fish face.” The appalled sound Ao’nung makes at the noise is almost as good as his face.
Tumblr media
The lesson after lunch goes the same. More diving, breathing and swimming.
The only difference is afterwards, Neteyam’s actually left on his own, something he’s actually kind of glad for. In the past day that he had been in Awa’atlu, he had barely a moment alone when awake.
Not wanting to go back to his marui yet and with plenty of hours before dinner, Neteyam wanders the village. He doesn’t recognize many of the people. Even the ones he does are just fleeting feelings of recognition that disappear right as they come.
Every so often, Neteyam glances into the water where his eyes always catch on his hair. His hair which is still held in braids and full of beads. Meant to symbolize a warrior. He doesn’t deserve to wear them anymore.
It’s maybe the fifth or sixth it happens that Neteyam finally gives into the guilt. He walks back to his marui, already having made up in his mind on what he’ll do with the next few hours.
Taking down his braids is hard. Though it’s not just because he’s used to having more help. It’s also the memories that come flooding back as he does so. He bites back tears as he unravels each one. For he’ll never wear his hair like this again nor will he ever have Neytiri and his sisters to help him braid it.
In the end, Neteyam doesn’t have the heart to get rid of the beads. Be it throwing them into the ocean or burying them in the forest. For Tuk made most of them and then braided them into his hair as she said it would bring luck.
Perhaps it’s true. Neteyam does still have his life. Then again, is this still the same life? It doesn’t feel the same, not even close.
Shaking his head, Neteyam stops pondering. It would only hurt more to think about them, he reminds himself again as he pours the beads into the same box where he stored his cumberband.
Sighing, Neteyam lays on the floor of his marui. Looking up at the roof and the way the light filters in through the opening at the top. This is what he has. This is what he is. He is Metkayina now even though his mind still mourns.

do you think there are any book series' vyrm or the kids are interested in?
this is completely biased but maybe something like warrior cats with hallownest wildlife? sorry i have to include the silly cats in my brain
I'll be completely honest, I don't think I've read enough book series that I can still remember to properly answer this question. But I suppose I could talk about the family and book genres they'd enjoy?
Vyrm would struggle a bit with focusing on large plots, he's definitely more into more technical books. Anything about tinkering or engineering would be right up his alley and he would be completely lost in any well written book on that topic. That being said, I think it was my friend who had this idea, but I love the mental image of him picking up some romance books prior to hibernation, and after separating with WL. He never really thought about romance before (WL wasn't really the romantic type, and for the longest time he thought he was the same way), but once he started suspecting he might have feelings for Grimm, he gave romantic novels a try, to see if what he's experiencing matched their portrayals of love. Despite that, however, he didn't get the confidence to confess until after he woke up from hibernation. These days he doesn't read them, as I said, he's not actually a novel type of person, and he finds learning romance through his experiences with Grimm much more pleasant.
Grimm on the other hand loves sappy romance novels. It definitely hits right into his desire for intimacy and affection that he experienced for most of his life. He'd imagine himself in those romantic situations, though for many years the realization that he'd never find that life only made him feel worse afterwards. After meeting Vyrm, those thoughts finally had some merit, and he found comforf in picturing himself and Vyrm in such scenarios, as this time there was a chance he could finally get to live that life. Well, he got his wish at last, though he still finds enjoyment in the genre. But doesn't limit himself to it, he fancies all kinds of stories, he has a large collection of various books in his Troupe chamber that he collected during his travels.
Hornet really likes adventure books, I think she'd enjoy Lord of the Rings for example. Stories are an escape for her, she lived many years convinced that loving anyone would just bring her pain, but deep down she really wanted something more. And books let her immerse herself into experiences that were perhaps more hopeful than her life. Of course, she now has a family again, and despite her fear of attachment, that sense of escapism isn't as strong of a driving force for her anymore. She still absolutely loves books and has read through Grimm's entire collection at least twice. She tries to hide it, but she's always ecstatic whenever Grimm brings new books from his travels.
Holly enjoys slice of life type stories, they grew up wanting that type of peaceful life, though unfortunately they wouldn't get their wish for a long time. They prefer stories with low stakes, something they can read to find comfort and reassurance that things are going to be okay. Though I think they'd like poetry as well, particularly that of very personal kind - it's difficult for them to interpret, but they're always willing to learn, especially in areas that give them a better understanding of emotions and things others struggle with. They didn't get to develop good communication skills in their childhood, but they really want to be a proper part of the Dirtmouth community, and exploring such themes in fiction certainly helps.
Zote claims he's above reading, but deep down he loves literature about knights and heroes. He always pictures himself as the great hero that saves the day and gets all the fame and appreciation for his heroic actions. He does struggle with separating those fictional heroes from reality, and he'll often start quoting his favorite knight characters pretending to be them, much to the amusement of others. It certainly feeds into his conviction that he's a great knight, but as he tones down his arrogance throughout the span of the AU, it becomes more endearing than harmful.
Lewk can only read very simple books for children, but he loves whenever someone else reads for him. Vyrm and Grimm would always read him various stories to bed, those of heroes and villains, of family, and who knows, maybe also some kid-friendly equivalent of a Warrior Cats story like you mentioned. He particularly enjoys looking at the pictures in Vyrm's technical books, and asking him what those things are and how they work. He's incredibly curious about everything, and is definitely shaping up to be an avid reader like Hornet or Grimm.
Asta and Milo are way too young to read, and they don't fully comprehend things that are read to them either. They do understand some words, but mostly those they hear often - mainly things like "papa" which they hear from Lewk, that they repeat to get the attention of Grimm or FPK. They like when someone reads them to sleep, but it's mostly due to the comforting vibe created by their soft blankets and their dads' voices.

Can you rate sh gods from the strongest to weakest? If it's not a spoiler
Hello!
Hmm strongest to weakest. Okay! But, in order to prevent spoilers, I will be leaving Lunar out. <3
Eclipse is the strongest. I think we all know.
Sun and Moon are an even match, and close to Eclipse. The two of them together could defeat him, but separately? Not so much.
Elusia comes in next. He isn't a greater god, but he's been around a long time and has amassed a lot of power.
Freddy and Bonnie are also pretty even. They've both got Elusia beat age wise, but they're still descended from familiars- Elusia's relation to the great gods gives him an edge.
Next I'd say Roxy, Monty, and Foxy. They're all warriors, but they're also nomadic gods. This means instead of having a temple, they travel and gain followers through their acts of kindness. Foxy actually treats his ship as a sort of moving temple <3
Millie after that! Though she's pretty on par with Chica! These goddesses are known for more docile work, so they're not strong in a fighting sense.
And all the way at the bottom, we have Pluto. It's actually quite sad to think that this same goddess used to whip Sun, Moon, and Eclipse's butts at sparring all the time. But due to her lack of followers and her poor health, well... she wouldn't stand a chance.
I hope this was as fun to read as it was for me to write! Thank you! :)

Legendary | Chapter Thirteen
Tumblr media
The air hummed with a mixture of emotions. I breathed steady but heavy at the same time, keeping my fists clenched as I refused to let my stance falter. Broly growled, stepping the first step forward. "You won't hurt these people. I won't let you!"
Ginyu let out a loud cackle, the sound belting out ominously. "Bold words, but let's see if you can back them up."
"You won't hurt these people Ginyu," I reiterated Broly's words.
Again after letting out a sharp laugh, "Brave words, but futile. This planet, and its dragon balls, all belong to Lord Frieza."
I took a deep breath, channelling my focus. This was it. The nightmares were becoming a reality. This time though, I wasn't alone. Broly and I stood side by side, ready to protect the Namekian people.
The Ginyu force fanned out, preparing for their attack. Guldo sneered, Recoome cracked his knuckles, Jeice and Burter exchanged grins of confidence, and Ginyu himself stood at the ready.
As the battle of Namek began, the stakes couldn't have been higher. With Broly by my side, I knew we could protect this planet and its people with everything we had. Our eyes met as I whispered, "We have to try to split them up, together they're far too strong."
The tension in the air was palpable as they prepared themselves. I could feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins, my senses heightened, and every muscle was prepared for the battle ahead.
Stepping forward, Ginyu had a confidence that felt like it was outshining mine. He outstretched his hand in our direction, a finger directing itself towards me, "I hope you haven't gone soft since I toughened you up on the ship."
"You'll find out soon enough," I responded, a voice roaring like thunder.
Following yet another chuckle, "Very well. Guldo, take care of them."
I knew the Ginyu Force inside and out. When I was just a scout, they took me on many missions. Ginyu was an instigator in awakening my bloodthirsty nature when I was part of Frieza's army. I couldn't lose focus and think of the past. I knew Guldo's abilities in time manipulation could prove to be a real threat if Broly and I weren't careful. I steadied myself again, focusing on the small green-skinned warrior.
"He can freeze time, watch out," I warned Broly, my eyes not leaving my opponent's sight.
Broly nodded, his muscles tensing. "I've got you, don't worry."
Guldo smirked as his hands raised into the air. "Try keeping up with me!" he taunted, and then he vanished.
Time seemed to slow to a halt as Guldo's ability activated. I fought to keep my movements fluid, anticipating his attack. He reappeared behind Broly, aiming for a critical strike. However, Broly's incredible instincts kicked in as he spun around in perfect time to block the attack, countering it with a powerful punch in return. It sent him sprawling backwards, stumbling back.
"H-how!?" He stammered, his eyes widened in shock.
"I told you I'm not Frieza's slave anymore." I smirked, "and Broly and I taught each other a lot... We aren't going down without a fight."
It was my turn, I launched a flurry of attacks. My body moved without my brain conducting it. Each punch was stronger than the last. Guldo struggled to keep up with me, the confident nature he started off our battle with frayed fast. Broly joined in, his sheer power overwhelming him as we made quick work of Guldo. With a final synchronised strike, we sent him plummeting into the ground, unconscious.
The rest of our enemies looked momentarily stunned, but then Recoome stepped forward with a crack of his knuckles. A grin was plastered across his face, "My turn."
He was a brute. Standing tall with muscles way bigger than mine. However, he didn't have the brains to match his brawn. He was next to charge at us, his strength was immense. The ground trembled with each one of his footsteps. We braced ourselves to meet his attack head-on. The impact was like a thunderclap as it sent shockwaves through the grassy battlefield. Our blows were exchanged like drumbeats. His attacks were strong but Broly and I were both faster, me being the more agile of the three of us. Together, Broly and I worked in perfect harmony and our movements were synchronised, our strikes just as precise.
Jeice and Burter glanced at each other as their smiles faded, and Jeice's red eyes narrowed. "Looks like we did perhaps underestimate them."
Burter, the fastest on the force, vanished in a blur and reappeared behind us. Broly intercepted him, his fist colliding with his jaw in a resounding crash. I faced off against Jeice next. His firey energy crackled all around him. The battle intensified, the air was filled with the sounds of both struggles. His energy blasted streaks towards me, I dodged and countered with my own, each one landing with pinpoint accuracy. I felt unstoppable, this felt so easy. Was it the practice? While Burter's speed was also impressive, I knew Broly's raw power was no match for him. As the battle raged on, I could feel Ginyu's eyes locked on us. I could sense the frustration and amusement racing through his gaze. "It seems they've improved, let me have a shot."
Jeice, being outmatched by me, decided to jump in with Burter to double-team Broly. He moved even faster than I anticipated. When I caught wind of where he had gone I was suddenly stopped by a fist to my stomach. Holding me up by my hair, Ginyu stayed in front of me holding me in place. My breathing hitched as I scrambled in his hands, digging my nails into his wrist as I tried to break free. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Broly staring at me out of complete concern. He kept both Jeice and Burter occupied but I knew all he would've wanted was to jump over to my aid.
"Let go of her!" Broly roared out, his voice mixed with anger and desperation as he continued to fend off his two opponents.
Ginyu smirked, his grip tightening. "Poor Captain 4 Alpha 1. You think you've changed, don't you? You think you can protect these poor people?" His voice dripped with condensation. "You're still the same weakling I trained on Frieza's ship."
I struggled in his grasp, my eyes burned with defiance. "I'm not that person anymore Ginyu! I have a purpose. I'm not a murderer!"
His laugh sent chills down my spine. "A purpose? Don't make me laugh. You've always been driven by fear, but that hasn't changed. You're scared of me even right now."
The memories started to flood back, parts of which I had tried to force myself to forget. The cruel training it took for me to be one of Frieza's elite. Ginyu's voice echoed in my mind, each word was an awakening reminder of the pain and torment I had to endure under his command.

𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕧𝕒𝕟𝕘𝕦𝕒𝕣𝕕 𝕠𝕡𝕤 // 𝕕𝕖𝕤𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕪 𝟚 𝕤𝕥𝕒𝕣𝕥𝕖𝕣𝕤
this dialogue taken from destiny 2's vanguard ops strikes; the lightblade, proving grounds, fallen saber. . . . adjusted for general use. . . . change as needed for usage
The only way in is through some old canals, which means we need a boat. Leave that part to me.
Hey, hey, hey, hey, that's our guy! The one guarding the temple! What's he doing away from his post? This could be our chance.
There's your ride. You just hop on, and I'll handle the rest.
Uh, these weird controls… I mean, how does this… Ah! There it is- Here we go! Boat's moving!
Uh… I don't know. I didn't expect this. Just a… little hiccup! Heh. You can get that barrier down, right? Sure you can.
Hey, hey, you did it! Good job. Boat's on the move again.
Seriously? But I did the thing… it's just this tech, it's so archaic… ugh, just give me a sec…
Okay, we're getting close to the swamp now. Temple's not far from here.
These two killed each other about a million times over, but she dedicated a temple to him. Eh, it's funny how that works. Now be careful here. Something happened to this place.
I just can't see it. Maybe there's a safe path through…
I was right? I was right! I knew it. I knew they were involved somehow…
Ah, contingency plan. They're learning. Trying to stay a step ahead of you. But you got it. That's the important part. That gets us one step closer to taking them down.
The challenge is met. Our blood flows together. May it tend to unity.
I welcome you, but my forces… they do not.
You honor me. May you meet a glorious death.
She breathes, she moves… and she will spit out your bones.
My war machine purrs. She hungers for battle. Have you the same appetite?
Do what you came for — fight well or die quickly.
You fight well. A shame you must pay the price for your pride.
They kneel to no one… not even me.
All feel fear. Some learn from it, while others are ruled by it. Which are you?
I refused to bend the knee. What does that tell you?
Why will you not stand with us?
We sign no treaties at the end of a gun.
Join me and let our alliance armor the stars.
We could work together. But as equals, not your vassals.
All swore their lives to me. They can use them as they wish.
If it must be done.
I have prepared further challenges for you. A banquet of combat to test your resolve.
And my father said you were such fun.
Do not expect gratitude. Those you leave behind will grow. They will learn.
Good. If our foes are capable of growth, let us be the catalyst that forces them to change.
We eat the mountains; we drink the seas!
Yes. And we are here to stop you.
I know stories of fiends who cut at the legs of powerful heroes. I will not be felled so easily.
We do what they must. Today, we must be champions.
My warriors do not die easily. They fight because I gave them their freedom.
Imagine if they fought because you gave them hope.
Such strength. Look what your power can do. I seek that power — not for myself, but for my people.
How selfless. Perhaps we can discuss this further after your people stop trying to kill us.
I see now how you fight. Your potential is wasted running errands for your Commander.
There is no pleasure in killing. If this one act of barbarism will force peace… so be it.
Hold strong. One final victory is all I ask.
I yield, I yield! Let us meet and discuss this treaty. You may be a soft, small person but you hide some powerful tusk!
We take nothing but your word. Tend to your people… but break our agreement, and we will be back to finish what we started.
You have honored our traditions… and I must honor yours. I will see you soon… to "bargain."
I am glad to hear it. You will find our talent for diplomacy matches our skill in combat.
I pride myself on seeing the strength in others, and yours can no longer be denied. When can be discuss this treaty of yours?
I hope the blood spilled here today will be the last.
I… did not imagine this outcome. You have powers told of in the old stories.
Our vaults are full of relics from those who underestimated us. If you ever cross us again… bring a bigger weapon.
You fought with honor, and you accept defeat in the same way.
I am in danger, the systems are damaged.
If I'm understanding correctly, it's a distress call! There are so few ballet fans left, it'd be a shame to lose them.
Sorry, just a little longer--I think they are testing me.
It worked! Maybe too well. Hmm.

What are Dreams? An introduction to Dreams of the Stars' titular species
Dreams are a mystical species of 5 distinct races inhabiting DotS' universe:
Custodians, Dappermau, Ethonians, Puffballs, and Dracos!
In this post, I'll provide brief introductions to each individual type!
Encompassing all five, Dreams are otherworldly beings made by powerful positive life energy, weaved together with light by their creators, the aptly-titled Dream Makers. They were made with the Galaxy in mind, to be guardians, protectors, and a beacon of hope when the stars faced Nightmare's tyranny. Thusly, they're inclined towards being warriors, healers, and teachers for all life on behalf of their chronically docile creators.
Each Dream is rooted in a strong value, which can emerge in individuals in unique ways— be it good or bad.
☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okina (left) and Caizah (right) belong to FayeleneFyre
CUSTODIANS Dreams of Compassion
A draconic bipedal people who generally value knowledge and specialize in mystical arts more than combat. While previously a proud and devout-to-tradition people, they've always prevailed as natural caretakers as well as excellent chroniclers. They have a detailed history of all things Dream, as they're the first and eldest of all the Dream races!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mysique (left) belongs to FayeleneFyre | ??? (Right) belongs to me Two fine examples of a modern bipedal as well a pureblood Dappermau!
DAPPERMAU Dreams of Duty
A beast-like species that's mostly recognizable by their eyes and similar anatomy patterns with their Custodian cousins. These vigilant, intelligent creatures were designed to guard precious lands, and protect fragile peoples. They're not always the most bright among Dreams, but they stand strong to their value, dutiful to the end.
Tumblr media
Lilac (left) and Guy (right) are great examples of the stark proportion difference between males and females
ETHONIANS Dreams of Spirit
Resembling the humanoid D'nno race, Ethonians are a combination of a Custodian's intelligence and a Dappermau's protective ferocity. Agile, graceful, and varied in combat styles, Ethonians have an unbreakable spirit and a deep passion for preserving nature. They're also historically known to have first penned the Knight Code commonly used by today's Knights of the Stars! The gem on their foreheads is their source of power, and embodies their soul— therefore always matching the color of their eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meta Knight & King Arthur, displaying a few ways a Puff can adorn themselves with armor or accessories
PUFFBALLS Dreams of Joy
The smallest of all Dreams, but surely not the weakest, Puffs are the most adaptive with their signature Copy skill, where they can turn their foe's power into their own. Dream Puffs can have one of two Copy styles: Inhale, or Star Sling. Either style plays into their personality a little, but overall Puffs are known for having a generally large appetite to fuel their high-energy lifestyle and combat. They boast a unique amorphous, stretchy, flexible body covered in a short, soft fuzz— though length can vary between individuals and features brought in from different bloodlines.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DRACOS & PALADORIANS Dreams of Loyalty
The youngest, but most powerful of the Dreams, the Dracos are a potent and proud Dragon-esque people. Mysteriously, there's a variant of this kind of Dream, allegedly called "Paladorians", who share the same value as their draconic brethren. Both have the unique trait to combat a mighty True Nightmare's power, with three types of Dracos specializing in three different strengths: Bashers and physical combat Lungs and mystical combat Wyverns and balanced combat Whereas Paladorians seem to have ascended to a Dream status by unknown means. Oddly enough, they appear to be some kind of strange hybrid between average people and Dream. One thing that's most important between both variants is that they're deeply loyal to whom, and what, they have pledged to, and to go against it would be their demise.
So that's a quick crash course on Dreams!
If you have any further questions about Dreams, or characters that I share, please feel free to hit me up in my Q/A box!
If you want to know more about Dracos, and their nightmarish counterparts, Dracomares, just ask my sister, FayeleneFyre! (I'll link her Tumblr when she refreshes it!)

“ You wanted my stamina, right? ”  He wasn't sure if he was remembering correctly, but he does vaguely remember something like that from back when they had been competing against one another for that fitness seminar. It seemed as if ever since coming to Fodlan, the two of them were competing in some way, now that he thinks about it. Rivals. He hadn't expected that kind of relationship with the Isaachian princess, but it's not one he feels any need to revoke either. He thinks they're doing just fine as they are.
And so when the day of the Winter Festival comes, he comes bearing a gift for her. A bottle wrapped in a silver ribbon trades hands from his to hers, but instead of any alcohol, what is in there livens the spirit in a slightly different way.
“ It's not the same, but here. It's an S Drink. ”  She had given him something rare as a present once, so here he was doing the same. He's not sure anything he could give would compare to the treasure of good news her Verdanite gift had been for him his previous birthday, but he tries nevertheless in his own way.  “ My army used these when we needed to push ourselves beyond our limits. If someone was fatigued, they'd drink it and be able to go into battle just fine afterwards. ”
In their darkest hours, this had been the thing to save them. And now he was passing it onto Larcei.
“ If you want to keep training and getting stronger, then this should help. And when you're the strongest you can be, come to me, OK?? ”
Because he wouldn't want to miss it for the world.
S Drink, huh? Doesn't Leif know that pulling the ace out of his sleeve will leave him defenseless in his most desperate hour? Larcei handles the offered bottle with a practiced hand, swirling it from its head to give the contents a healthy mix. She goes wordless at first, just hunting around in Leif's eyes.
What could this mean? Does he not think he'd need the S Drink's advantage to best her; is he hoping to see her at her highest peak so he could savor bringing her plummeting back down? The bronze twins on his face are shields, revealing nothing and concealing everything. She just has to trust that this is what he'd mean, as her friend, as her competitor.
And she smirks.
Larcei would have it no other way. This belief of Leif's--that he can take her at her strongest--is something to be excited about. It's fuel for her furnace, a shovel of dust to power the cosmic engine in her star. "When that day comes," she warns, though she still wears her wicked smile, "I'll wipe you for good. You'll regret even thinkin' you could match me at my best."
His words filter through her head a second time as she eyes the drink. This thing could save her life, if the prince has even one honest bone in his body. Thinking back to all the times she pushed herself to her limit, borrowed power from beyond the grave--fought even after burning out--she devises a number of ways she could put this to good use. This S Drink, that she now pockets, becomes her lifeline.
Leif comes into view again.
"'Till then though, you can't give in. And I'll make sure of that." An arm crosses over her chest, balled into a fist at the end. It's swearing an oath of some sort. Though nonspecific, the heart behind it is very real. "What you gave me might save my life, so I'm savin' yours in return. Leif, you've got my promise as a warrior of Isaach that I won't let you fall." Her fingers clench tighter as the words permeate the space between them. They leave their lingering taste for a second of silence, during which Larcei's eyes flutter shut. This is something serious. She can't have Leif catch her goofing off.
Once it's over, she pats him on the shoulder with a friendlier air about her. They can go back to being buds.
"At least, not until we've had our fight!"

I've just found Call Them Brothers and I am so in love with the way you write Warriors, Time, and Wind. The characterizations are all fascinating and they all feel like real, breathing people and it's super impressive. They're definitely my favorite characterizations I've found in any lu fic and I just wanted to say thank you for giving such complex characters such a fascinating and cathartic story.
Also, the way you have crafted the plot together and connected so many different narrative threads into what I can only describe as a gorgeous tapestry is absolutely masterful. You are truly composing one of the greatest and most well put together stories I've ever read. As a writer myself, I feel like I'm learning so much about how to use stylistic choices to better support plot threads. I absolutely adore CTB so thank you very much.
If it's alright, can I ask how you manage all the various plot threads and especially all the political intrigue?
I hope you have a lovely day/evening and thank you so much for Call Them Brothers
Thank you so much! You're really kind and I'm so happy you like CTB so far!! This story has been a big experiment of just throwing stylistic spaghetti at the wall and seeing what happens, so I'm glad you're enjoying it.
I am a proud preacher of the importance of character drama in a story. Any genre or idea or world is carried by the writing for the characters. I have spent a long time honing in on how to write character dramas.
I say that because all of the various plot threads, even the political intrigue ones, are at their core about two or more characters at odds with each other.
Every plot line about the war can be broken down into what Warriors's relationships are with other people, like Spirit, Lincoln, Zelda, Impa, Anders, and more. Typically, each character is a mouthpiece for a specific stance that Warriors opposes. Let them clash, and what is essentially a story about a bunch of people trying to figure out how to fight a war becomes 10 times more intriguing.
I know I wrote a very long post some time about about how I came up with some of the world building stuff concerning the politics, but I can't find it. Here is a quick summary of what I probably said:
Don't be afraid to just use real world politics in your story; my Hyrule is brimming with a lot of the classic Americanisms
Focus on cause and effect; if character X does something, then it should have a ripple effect
Look at other stories about the topic you're writing on; I was pretty familiar with literature and movies about war before writing this story, which certainly helped me in writing about a war
Get everyone's perspectives; I find that a lot of political intrigue focuses on the upper classes, which is why I think the story becomes richer when you look at how all these policies affect the people
For the copious amounts of plot threads... I'm not even sure, pal. All I know is that I established that certain characters are going through stuff and as I write the story, they kind of just do things on their own.
I can talk more about how the present day and the past are worked together:
For purposes of character development and plotting, I considered the past and the present two different stories; thinking them as the same one makes it more complicated than it needs be
I picked a point in both plots where the events had to happen in the same chapter, then paced CTB around it
The past is more thoroughly planned out in the present so that I could reference one in the other without worrying about inconsistencies
Everyone already knows how the past ends, as it ends in the present. That means the two sides of the story will have different types of tension: one where the reader sees the train wreck but can't stop it and one where the reader doesn't know when the crash is happening; understanding they have different types of tension and intrigue and leaning into it will help the plots match up
Everything beyond that I just kinda wing it. Truthfully, I can tell where in the story I shoe'd in a convenient plot point to help move things along. I don't think many people notice where the plot is weak since I try to make everything come off as being on purpose.
So that's my last bit of advice: be confident, especially if this is a genre you're not used to or a project that you think you're not prepared for. Readers can tell when you're scared. I swear that if you just commit and show no fear, your story will appear more put together than it is.

rouge stained letters (but is red not the color of love?); pov first (?) person
* • + • *
note: this story is not related in any way to past stories, i wrote this on a whim :3
it's first person at the start, but your pov is of an oc, not as y/n haha
then it becomes third person :3
* • + • *
pov: you’re two lovers, fighting in the same side of the war. you send each other letters, 24 from him and 24 from you. you're supposed to be delivered a final, 25th letter carrying bad news: he's been captured and planned to be executed. you don't even receive it as you are dragged away to be executed as well..
-+*+-
later, when they're bringing you out to the execution stand, you hear the voice of your captor and- 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳'𝘴 𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦?
"i read that letter you were supposed to send. addressed to... hm, well, that's the name of another warrior against us. sweet, is it not? you said you'd do anything to see them again.."
"wait... no, no! you're- you're lying! they can't be here! they were- they were in hiding!"
you pale, your eyes blown wide. you would get to see each other again, but at what cost? 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴. you kicked at your executioners harder, screaming as the dragged you on top of a pile of straw and logs.
"ah, who shall die first? well, I'm sure you-" the man looked at you, eyes glinting with something 𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘴, and continued, "wouldn't like to see your fiancé to be killed.. well, i don't grant wishes."
you shrieked, "no! no! let us go-" you ended with a sob as your lover's head fell to the ground, golden necklace (he still wore it, even when you had gifted it to him so long ago) falling to the ground, red covering gold.
you never got to say you loved him.
the man in front of you, who just killed your lover, threw a match onto the pile beneath you. you didn't even feel the flames licking your ankle, as you screamed in sorrow. before the fire started burning your clothes to ashes, you smiled. "o-oi! luke! let's look f-for each other in our next life, okay!? i love you!" you felt the burning sensation creep up your chest, and you closed your eyes.
before you closed them, you swear the necklace on the ground glinted, as if his spirit had said "yes, and i love you too."
𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘪𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘥, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘥.
the final letter was only recently found, due to it being extremely well hidden. it was said it was used as a threat to the rest of the warriors of the lover's country. it ended, however, in a banquet being thrown in honor of the two, for their country had won the next two wars waged.
the contents of the letter, found in the writer's nearly destroyed home, are now on display to see.
"it's sad, isn't it, luke?"
"much so, leanore."
° • °
may 7th, 1522
luke, i don't have much time. they've caught onto me. i hope this letter reaches you before they do. don't worry! they won't take my head that easily! i know your head is going all woozy and your face is all serious like when maki told us we had to be separated. even if they manage to capture me, i know you'll help me escape and we can be together again! i love you! and even if we die, i'll look for you. even if it takes me a thousand lives! i have to go now, mak
the letter, unfinished and never sent was what ultimately led to historians and archaeologists worldwide agreeing on the madman who had executed the two. bloodstains and teardrops were eventually used to match to the corpses of hundreds of fighters, yet it only matched to a man infamously known by students in history as 'the red dog' for the blood and fire he left behind.
the teardrops and other bloodstains matched to a famed fist-fighter in the opposite country from the red dog, and she is assumed to be the writer. found in a different house in the snowy country of ostina in the 1500s, another unfinished letter, assumed to be the other lover.
may 6th, 1522
leanore, i'm sorry i have to greet you with this info but i think i'm being tracked. don't get into fights anymore please, i'm begging you. i'd rather you live. i love you. when death takes my hand, i’ll hold yours with the other, so i can find you through all our lifetimes.
the letter, though seeming fully written, was left unsigned and extremely damaged. it took five years to be able to make out the sharp scrawl. to this day, however, speculation about a faded mark in the paper lead people to see this last letter themselves, to see if it truly existed.
written next to the last sentence, in what is rumored to be blood, is "i love you, so much, please live for me and your" followed by a trail of blood leading to the end of the shredded paper. it is thought that the second lover was already captured at this time, and was allowed to make a final letter, only to be told he couldn't finish. being desperate, he wrote in blood, and when the jailer noticed, he quickly grabbed the paper and handed it to a guard.
the last word being 'your' is said to refer to the woman's two brothers, who died in war two years prior to the start of the letters, their corpses dating back to 1518.
nowadays, there are many a book on the two lover's tale for children, albeit changed and ending happy. the producers of the books, when asked, always say, 'we were told as children that if you thought of the two lovers being happy, they would be no matter where they were, and they would always be together.'
