I'm finally dipping into my [bulk, because I'm obsessed with it] coffee bean purchase this afternoon, and while I was concerned about the aroma of the roast (I worried it might have been overroasted; it's my first time buying from this company), the taste is just so fucking heavenly.

I am writing this post to admit my addiction. Yes, I am a coffee addict.But not just any coffee, quality barista coffee. YES, I am a coffee nerd!! How did I get here? I don’t know either. I wasn’t really into coffee until after graduating. My first coffees were made by my grandma. They were ‘Koffie Verkeerd’ as we call them in Belgium. It’s coffee with a lot of milk and sugar. Sudden brain blast over morning coffee:

John Gaius, necrolord whatever, cringiest man alive, refuses to let the earth die. And not just in the literal sense of locking the earth’s soul in a barbie on ice, in subtler ways too.

The most obvious is the memes, John constantly references memes that are dated even to us, but are in universe from a culture that died ten thousand years ago!

Slightly more subtle is the years. Why does everyone in the Houses measure in earth years? It’s been ten THOUSAND years since anyone lived on the earth! But John keeps them as a unit of measurement.

Even more subtle is the language. In sci-fi and fantasy we’re all used to the idea of the translation for the reader, people don’t speak english in lord of the rings, or dune, but the dialogue is in english for us, the readers. Not in The Locked Tomb. In this series, they ARE speaking english. Modern, bog standard english, to the point where two people born thousands of years apart speak similar enough dialects that one can pose as the other (dulcie/cytheria).

Now, this could possibly fall under that standard sci-fi trope, EXCEPT!!!! In Nona The Ninth, we see the non-house humans! And they speak dozens of languages, like you’d expect after TEN THOUSAND YEARS of linguistic drift!

John is trying SO HARD to keep the earth alive that he’s forced a language to stagnate for, say it with me now, Ten Thousand Years, to the point where even completely new things with no equivalent in our world don’t even have new words, just repurposed old ones (flimsy, sonic).

John Gaius, the first necromancer, could resurrect the planet itself, and millions of people, but he couldn’t resurrect the culture. So, John, cryogenics researcher, tried to put the culture on ice, to keep it as close to the one he remembers as possible. And he still failed.

“Why is that coffee named 666 in the Morning? It sounds cursed.” Tim asked, glaring at the menu board beyond the counter.

“Oh-oh-oh! That’s because it is, my friend,” Tucker said, rapping an arm around Tim’s shoulder. “666 has six shots of Arabica Espresso, six shots of Roasted Hazelnut Root, Smoked Vanilla, Blood Red Sea Salt Caramel, Void Chocolate, coconut, and pistachio syrups from The Year 1666’s original line—,”

“The banned line?”

“Yep! But it’s no longer banned, so don’t worry about it,” Tucker said. “Anyways— from the original line, and brewed for six days and six nights, without filtering the grounds. There is no milk or sugar, the syrups are sugar free. So it’s just bitter flavors, and pure black coffee from the tenth layer of hell.”

“That sounds disgusting,” Tim said then paused before adding, “I’ll take six.”

break trio coffee headcanons (because why not):

Kidou kinda gets deeper into hand-brewing, quite to the nerd depths but instead of making it his personality he just enjoys the meticulous preparation process. he probably has an app to follow the flow rate... and of course he has a chemex. in two sizes, most likely. he still does drink all kinds of coffee, but only in the morning, to not overcaffeinate.

Endou doesn't really drink coffee but he likes sweet coffee drinks and coffee flavored things. he has the adhd brain where caffeine makes him sleepy, so he doesn't really get people who use it to energize.

Gouenji doesn't like the coffee flavor that much, and prefers energy drinks for caffeine boost. though, he's the kind of guy who takes a cup if everyone else's having, more for the social experience than the drink itself. I think he enjoys chai a lot more.
