In communities living next to factory farms, residents have long voiced their concerns about environmental pollution. Now, research shows that not only can we see the air pollution generated by industrial swine facilities, but we can see that it’s disproportionately affecting communities of color — all the way from space. A new study published in Environmental Science & Technology used satellite data to measure ammonia — a common pollutant produced by factory farms from the massive amounts of animal manure — in North Carolina. Across the eastern part of the state, University of Virginia researchers saw that ammonia levels were elevated in areas where there were high concentrations of industrialized pig facilities. In their research, they found significant population disparities. From 2016 to 2021, ammonia levels were 49 percent higher for Indigenous communities, 35 percent higher for Hispanic and Latino communities, and 27 percent higher for Black communities, compared to non-Hispanic white communities.

You know what?
My ancestors would have wanted pasteurization, vaccines, antibiotics, disinfectants, birth control, psychiatric medications, pain management, anesthesia. My ancestors would have wanted to be able to keep their loved ones around longer, and not lose them too early/too soon to childbirths, injuries, bacterial infections, mental illnesses, and diseases that are curable and/or preventable in our modern day life.
Modern medicine saves lives.

Black Excellence, Community, and the Future of Healthcare
As we wrap up this two-part series, I can’t help but sit in deep gratitude and reflection. Love Begins At Home isn’t just a name—it’s a movement, a commitment, and a testament to what Black excellence looks like in action. When I first conceptualized this organization, it was just a seed, something that I carried with me spiritually. But now, it has grown into something tangible, something powerful, something that belongs to the community.
Love Begins At Home has always been about more than healthcare—it’s about holistic wellness, empowerment, and creating spaces where our people feel seen, heard, and valued. And now, as we step into 2025, we are expanding our reach, our vision, and our impact. Our new location at 6909 West Colonial Drive in Orlando is more than just a building; it’s a beacon for those in need, a sanctuary for healing, and a place where transformation happens daily.
I couldn’t do this alone. None of us could. Like a bridge that requires multiple supports to stand strong, Love Begins At Home thrives because of a team of dedicated individuals who hold it up from all sides. This organization may have been born from my spirit, but it requires guardianship, protection, and love from all of us to flourish. And let me tell you—this baby is running now! We’re serving 1,500 patients and counting, welcoming in new faces, and creating opportunities for people to take charge of their own healing.
One of the exciting changes coming in 2025 is the addition of Peer Support Specialists. This role is vital to our mission because it focuses on walking with our community members, not just treating them. A Peer Support Specialist is not a therapist—they don’t diagnose or prescribe. Instead, they guide, support, and empower. Think of them as a clinical companion—someone who helps you navigate your journey while honoring clinical frameworks and ethical standards.
It’s about more than just telling people what to do. It’s about giving them the tools to process, reflect, and come to their own conclusions. We’re not in the business of creating carbon copies of our experiences. We want individuals to be so grounded in themselves, so rooted in their own growth, that they can flourish on their own terms.
And let’s talk about boundaries and sustainability. Love Begins At Home is here to serve, but in order to keep doing this work, we have to maintain our integrity and sustainability. This is why we operate within a structured ethical and legal framework—because excellence demands accountability. We are a Black-led, community-centered nonprofit, and we will always operate above reproach. Our leadership team ensures that we remain within the highest standards so that we can continue to provide care for generations to come.
So yes, sometimes we have hard conversations about what it means to balance giving and sustainability. But at the center of everything we do is love. Love for our people. Love for our work. Love for a future where access to quality healthcare is a right, not a privilege.
I remember walking into an office in 2019, just a young Black man with an idea, and asking for partnership. That moment changed everything. And now, here we are. Love Begins At Home isn’t just my dream anymore. It’s a shared vision, carried forward by a community that refuses to let each other fall.
Black excellence isn’t just about achievement—it’s about collective progress. It’s about building, sustaining, and uplifting. And we’re just getting started.
