in like a one person gets one, who would dicks soulmate (platonic or not idk) be? i’ve asked this to several ppl and the answers are usually wally, donna, or jason though i’ve seen some ppl say slade, roy, and bruce.
Anon your ask has literally been haunting me at night. I thought I knew the answer but then you hit me with a Donna!! But between Bruce and Donna, I can't decide so I'll just present a case for both.
Bruce
Bruce and Dick are soulmates on a cosmological scale. The DC universe ordained them to always find each other because they're quite literally a fated pair.
Tumblr media
Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight Issue #23
Bruce: The only regret is that I'm out there alone. It felt good having someone at my back, being part of a team...but no sense wasting time wishing for something I'll never have.
Dick: He's cool, dad...d'you think we'll ever see him when we play Gotham?
The universe literally brings them together no matter the circumstances.
Tumblr media
Convergence Issue #4
"The bond between you and Bruce Wayne echoes in every reality."
I don't think there's any stronger evidence for Dick and Bruce being soulmates than this.
But if that's still not enough I have more-
Tumblr media
The Multiversity: Guidebook
In Bruce's world he lost Dick and in Dick's world he lost Bruce, but still in the end they somehow find each other. In every universe that has Batman, if someone is his partner it's always Dick.
In the medieval ages world-

In a world where Bruce is a doctor at Arkham -

The Batman of Arkham
Dick is always there as his second.
Here's another interesting but depressing fact: In worlds where Dick Grayson has died as Robin, Bruce Wayne has never taken in another Robin.
This is because on top of the fact that Dick and Bruce as fated to meet, Dick means the entire world for Bruce. Like sometimes Bruce will come across a case with a child involved and the first thing he'll think about is Dick.
Tumblr media
Batman: City of Madness Issue #2
Bruce's mind and life is literally consumed by Dick Grayson on a cosmologically spiritual level.
Donna
Donna is Dick's soulmate on a twin-sister spiritual level. Dick and Bruce are two halves of a whole, yin and yang. Dick and Donna though are one person. Their relationship is like taking paint and mixing it together to get something new. Like in those comics where two people look at each other and there's a "zing!" and suddenly it's an instant connection. That's them.

They're so special and integral to each other that when an evil witch erases Donna from everyone's memories, there is only one focal point for her. One focal person for her throughout the years. They're the definition of soulmates.
She knows him better than anyone else and he knows her. She even had him walk her Donna the aisle for her wedding. He was given that honor because of who they are to each other.

hey man, my first comics where the rhato stuff and I've noticed a lot of people think roy n starfires really out of character? I mean I get starfire (I thought that was just classic comics can't write women disease at the time)
do you know what are the comics I'd have to read to like, get it?
that’s cause they are out of character in a way neither of them have still entirely recovered from. they are featured in some good books however!! when written well they both really shine w the titans
these are not definite lists but for kory id recommend starting with wolfman and perez’s new teen titans, where she was introduced, then jla/titans, titans 99, and outsiders vol.3. convergence new teen titans was a cute mini run and while there’s many things to criticise about teen titans 2003 i do like her mentor role in it, so could also be worth checking out. i really disliked her solo series so id avoid that personally
for roy u can start with the silver age teen titans, but otherwise an easier entry point is teen titans year one and worlds finest teen titans. then new teen titans volume 2, nightwing; old friends new enemies, snowbirds don’t cry (aged very badly but still important), batman plus arsenal, the arsenal mini, titans 99, outsiders vol.3, and green arrow 2003. the green arrow/black canary wedding special is also funny to read, but if u don’t like pain and unimaginable torment avoid cry for justice and any book that also features jason todd.
i know ive missed a bunch of stuff but that should at least give u a good indication of exactly how bad lobdell fucked up the supporting cast in his shitty book ♥️

ULTIMATE SUPERGIRL READING GUIDE
Tumblr media
since i've been asked a few times in the past for various reading guides for kara, i thought i'd compile them all into one post for the sake of convenience!

if you have any questions at all don't be afraid to shoot me an ask!
for each section bolded comics are required, italicized comics are recommended, and everything else is optional!

Why did Red Robin fail as an alias that Tim was transitioned into? Did it ‘fail’?
I don't have any special insight on this one, but I can give you a bunch of reasons that made it unpopular.
The main one however? It's heavily associated with n52 Tim, and people don't like n52 Tim.
(Heads up going in - I will be using cover dates for all of this, because working with cover dates over publication dates is simpler for me)
Tim used 'Red Robin' as a name between August 2009 and July 2018. This splits up as follows with the major titles he was appearing in:-
2 years, 3 months (August 2009 - October 2011) in Batman Reborn pre-Flashpoint as Red Robin (Red Robin vol 1):
Tumblr media
5 years, 1 month (November 2011 - November 2016) in n52 as Red Robin (Teen Titans vol 4 & 5, Batman Eternal, Batman & Robin Eternal):
Tumblr media
2 years (August 2016 - July 2018) in Rebirth as Red Robin (Detective Comics):
Tumblr media
I wanted to put the photos up to help clarify the differences between each of these versions.
Yes, there's overlap between the last two, because Teen Titans vol 5 finished several months after the start of Tynion's Detective Comics run. The two characters are essentially separate - switching over to Rebirth was a messy process that took several months depending on the title
The majority of appearances of 'Red Robin' as a character are of n52 'Tim Drake', who doesn't have the same backstory, parents or history as Robin as the characters either side of him. He's the one that most long term fans of the character would rather not talk about or think about.
Tynion's Detective Comics run between 2016 to 2018 was about taking the characters therein back to their pre-Flashpoint characterisation, as much as possible. And you can tell from the costume, Tim was 'Red Robin' in name only. He was wearing a Robin costume that simply happened to have an extra R on the crest. He looked like a Robin, acted like a Robin, was doing Robinlike work for Batman, and when Young Justice 2019 started he got a costume update that dropped the extra R from the top and he's been using Robin again ever since (less the attempt at using 'Drake' as a code name in 2020).
So why did it fail? Here's a bunch of reasons:
People don't like the cowl design on Tim: even Marcus To, the artist best associated with Tim as Red Robin before Flashpoint, perpetually draws Tim with the cowl down and often with part of the costume off for commissions and artwork.
People don't like the new 52 version of Tim.
Red Robin was a costume that Tim put on back in 2009 as a punishment to himself while was was doing 'unRobinlike' things looking for Bruce, and once that circumstance was over, there wasn't that much time during Reborn to really cement it as Tim's adult persona due to the universe getting cut off and rebooted.
New 52 Tim was largely not associated with the rest of the Bats for various editorial reasons, making him an outsider that's unusual compared to the rest of his characterisation since 1989.
To show the difference for Tynion's 'Tec run and convince all the fans that new 52 Tim was gone, they decided to make a very clear visual distinction between the characters. That visual distinction essentially was making Tim into a Robin again.
If you're looking at character storyline for Tim Drake, son of Jack and Janet, the story arc effectively goes: Batman Reborn, Convergence, Detective Comics, Young Justice 2019. Which is a story of Tim transferring himself back OUT of the Red Robin costume as he healed and no longer needed it as a temporary measure, and regaining his memories and history.
I mean, why would DC want to use Red Robin for Tim? It's got the difficulty that Jason has taken over effective ownership of the colour red for identification in the family purposes. It's associated with times of grief in Tim's life (because Tim explicitly wears red for loss: for Kon and for Bruce) and with storylines they've excised from his history. It's explicitly a form of self-flagellation.
It could have been Tim's Nightwing, but it's effectively ended up Tim's Grayson period. Something that happened and is referenced, but there are good reasons not to return to.

Kate Kane- 14 Years Before Batman
Barbara Gordon- 8-9 Years Before Batman
Helena Bertinelli- 8 Years Before Batman
Dick Grayson- 1st Day of Spring™, 7 Years Before Batman
Cassandra Cain-Wayne- 26th January, 2 Years Before Batman
Jason Todd- 16th August, 2 Years Before Batman
Stephanie Brown- 1 Year Before Batman
Tim Drake-Wayne- Batman: Year One
Damian Wayne- Batman: Year Nine
Long Version
Bruce Wayne- 26 Years Before Batman
On the 4th of January, Year One, a 25 year-old Bruce Wayne returns to Gotham after 12 years abroad on 4th January, months before his first outing as Batman (Batman: Year One #1). Unless his birthday is between Jan 1-4, Bruce turns 26 the year Batman is born.
Tumblr media
Dick Grayson- 1st Day of Spring, 7 Years Before Batman
Dick Grayson's origin story is appears in the tail end of Batman: Dark Victory, which takes place in the 4th and 5th years of Batman's career.
In its sequel, Robin: Year One, Dick begins attending Bristol Middle School. And in Batman & Robin (2009) #13, Dick, as Batman, tells the Joker he had already figured him out at 12 but The Joker doesn't appear in Robin: Year One. So, Dick is probably 11 when he becomes Robin, in Year Five (Dark Victory). Dick is 19 years younger than Bruce.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Important for later, Dick becomes Nightwing, aged 19 (Nightwing: Year One and Batman #116) in Year Thirteen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jason Todd- August 16th, 2 Years Before Batman
According to his death certificate, Jason Todd was 15 years and 8 months old when he died on the 27th of April (Batman Files). His birthday is August 16th (Detective Comics #790). At this time, Dick Grayson was 21, having left the Robin mantle 2 years earlier; at 19 (Batman #436). Jason is around 5 years younger than Dick. He was hence Robin for less than 2 years, from when he was 13 going on 14 in Year Thirteen up to 27th April, Year Fifteen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stephanie Brown- 2 Years Before Batman
Steph is 15 when she debuts as Spoiler (Secret Origin 80-Page Giant). At the same time as her debut comic, Deathstroke (1991) Annual 1 has Dick saying he, one of the oldest Titans, is no older than 21 (the age he was when Jason died). Dick is 6 years older than Steph. So Steph debuts in Year Fifteen; the same year Jason dies and Tim becomes Robin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Steph becomes Batgirl right before her freshman year of university, aged 18, going on 19 (Batgirl 2009 #1). This is in Year Nineteen. Which means that Preboot ends in Batman: Year Twenty as Steph has not yet entered sophomore year. Convergence takes place after of course.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Barbara Gordon- 8-9 Years Before Batman
Batgirl (2000) #45 shows that Babs was already Batgirl at 18. As an adult, Babs is 5'11" and yet she did not meet the minimum height requirements for the GCPD or FBI during Batgirl: Year One. She must have become Batgirl before she stopped growing, and so was at most 16 during Batgirl: Year One. She also says that she is older than Dick in Batgirl: Year One but they must be close enough in age for them to go to prom together (Detective Comics #871). My theory is that Babs didn't go to her own prom because she skipped grades and was or felt too young so her high school prom was actually when she went with Dick to his. Babs is somewhere between 1-2 years older than Dick.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's more evidence for this. Dick is already a Teen Titan during Batgirl: Year One and in New Titans #89 said that he knew Donna Troy since they were both 13. So Babs likely became Batgirl between Year Seven and Year Eight, when she was 15-16 and Dick was 13-14. Also, Dick and Babs have a picnic as friends 12 years before The Black Mirror, in Year Twenty, so these ages are pretty perfect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Important for later, Babs is shot by the Joker just before Jason is killed and becomes Oracle before Tim becomes Robin. This is in Year Fifteen; she is roughly 22 here given that Dick is 20-21 at the time. No panels just math :P
Cassandra Cain-Wayne- January 26th, 2 Years Before Batman
Cassandra Cain debuts in No Man's Land aged 17 (Batgirl 2000 #1) and turns 18 on the 26th of January the following year, though she only learns this after it has passed (Batgirl 2000 #33). Later that year, Bruce brings her to Jason's grave on the 16th of August, the day he would have turned 18 (Detective Comics #790). She is 7 months older than Jason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Helena Bertinelli- 8 Years Before Batman
Helena Bertinelli was 8 when her family was murdered and the events of Huntress: Cry for Blood takes place 15 years after, following directly after No-Man's Land. Huntress is hence 23 following No-Man's Land. Cass turns 18 soon after No-Man's land, so Helena is around 5 years older than Cass.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But, Cass is born in January and Helena could be born later in the year. Helena Bertinelli is 21 years-old during Huntress: Year One; when she becomes the Huntress. She soon moves back to Gotham after Carvinal in Venice (late Jan-early Feb), and encounters Barbara Gordon as Batgirl. Babs is at most 22 here so Babs is close to 1 year older than Helena and Helena is slightly older than Dick. Huntress debuts at the tail end of Year Fourteen.
Damian Wayne- Batman: Year Nine
Dick and Stephanie call Damian a 10 year old in Batman and Robin #2 and Batgirl #17. One takes place before Steph starts uni (since Damian appears in Batgirl 2009 #1) and the other takes place during Steph's second semester of freshman year (Batgirl #13). So Damian is 9 years younger than Stephanie. He first appears aged 9 at the start of Year Nineteen and becomes Robin later that year, aged 10.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Renee Montoya- 7th September, 19 Years Before Batman
In 52 #14, published in 2006, we see Renee's passport and date of birth: 9/7/1970. It is the 14th week of the year so she would be 35 going on 36. 52 takes place in Year Eighteen, the calendar year Damian turns 9, so Renee is 27 years older than Damian.
Tumblr media
She debuts as the second Question in 52 #48 the same year, aged 36.
Kate Kane- 14 Years Before Batman
Kate Kane is 32 at the time of Batwoman: Elegy, in Year Nineteen, since she was in the same class at West Point as the real-life activist Dan Choi, which means that she was part of the US Military Academy Class of 2003. Damian is 10 at the time so Kate is 22 years older than Damian.
Tumblr media
Tim Drake-Wayne- Batman: Year One
Tim's age is THE weird one because DC are hellbent on keeping him at 17. It's too much for my brain, like how is he still 17 in Red Robin?? Let's say he seems to be only a year younger than Stephanie Brown a la Secret Origins 80-Page Giant or that he was bitten by a strange vampire bat during the One Year Later time skip. Your pick.
Fun fact: Dick permanently becomes Batman at 25 (in Year Nineteen), which is possibly the same age Bruce was when he became Batman.

The Teen Titans movie needs to be either -
Raven assembling the Titans to defeat Trigon
OR
Starfire escaping the Psions
And the line-up needs to be the New Teen Titans plus one or two extra heroes not in the original ensemble.
I'm talking Dick Grayson, Donna Troy, Wally West, Victor Stone, Garfield Logan, Koriand'r, Rachel Roth
AND
Let's add Karen Beecher/Bumblebee and - possibly - Jericho.
It's no secret James Gunn loves 80s pop culture and it influences his work. The above team WERE the Titans of the 80s.
And we can update it by having Dick, Donna, and Wally be young adults, college age or freshly out of college, who USED to be part of the Teen Titans until it fell apart, and even the first five to ten minutes can be a flashback of the first teen titans versus their first villain, Mister Twister, that way we get the Roy and Garth shout out, before it skips ahead and shows them living normal lives. Meanwhile you have Gar, Vic, Karen, Rachel, and Kory all converging on the three to face whatever villain they choose to make the first big bad. Whoever doesn't get picked for the first film is the sequel villain. Meanwhile the third movie absolutely has to be the Judas Contract.

Harley Quinn's insane popularity during the mid-2010s is a super interesting phenomenon precisely because her abrupt rise in popularity was less about her unique appeal as an individual character and more about everything else DC Comics was doing at the time
Harley's New 52 aesthetic revamp from her classic harlequin costume to a corset, booty shorts, and two-toned hair happened entirely because people loved her look in the Arkham games and DC was trying to capitalize on it. Also almost entirely on the basis of her popularity in those games (and because the company was in desperate need of positive PR after mass criticism about their treatment of female characters in the early New 52, including Harley), editorial greenlit a solo book for her.
Her 2014 solo book outsold most of DC's line partially because of the character, story, and the creative team of course; there's no way it could have been that successful without people liking those things. But its success was massively helped by Harley being one of the few characters who (outside of Glass's Suicide Squad run, which was promptly yeeted into oblivion and never mentioned again) wasn't completely fucked over by the reboot and whose book DC editorial largely left alone during the notoriously micromanaged New 52 era.
She also had one of the few decent "fun" books at a time when DC's offerings were mostly either grimdark and edgy, disliked, or doing something radically different with their protagonists than normal (for example...Lobdell's Teen Titans and Red Hood and the Outlaws, making Supergirl a Red Lantern, and having Dick Grayson fake his death and go undercover as a super spy), making Harley Quinn a breath of fresh air for anyone seeking to escape the melodrama of Forever Evil, Future's End, and Convergence or find a new book after the ones they were reading ended or became unpalatable.
Over in the DCEU, people had two lukewarm movies they weren't really that excited about despite starring DC's Trinity. And then you got Suicide Squad, which was kinda hot garbage and a critical failure but made bank and had the wonderful Margot Robbie playing Harley Quinn. No one else really made it out of that movie looking good, but Margot's depiction of Harley was widely praised and her look in that movie became wildly popular, selling tons of merch. So DC went "oh she's a seller!" and then greenlit the Harley Quinn cartoon and Birds of Prey 2020 while generally refusing to acknowledge that the lack of decent DCEU movies overall, Robbie's performance compared to her co-stars, and Harley's grunge Hot Girl look were the main drivers of Harley's seemingly unique popularity following the movie's release.
Basically: Harley got incredibly lucky because she got a major internal editorial push as a character at the exact same time basically every other character whose comics would have normally outsold hers got fucked over, and then got lucky twice when DC cast Margot Robbie to play her in Suicide Squad while the movie's Hot Topic Aesthetic™ was still somewhat en vogue.
Combine those two things with the fact that her relationship with Poison Ivy (an A-list Batman Rogue) was confirmed at the same time same-sex marriage was legalized and DC was looking to promote a diverse character slate...and you get the wild popularity she's enjoyed since ~2012 that nonetheless is obviously starting to slowly return back to base levels. Which you can tell when you look at, for example, Harley's sales numbers post-Rebirth/Infinite Frontier (since facing actual competition from DC's staple characters) and the number of new Harley-led projects that have been greenlit since the 2020 management massacre that took out Didio.
At the end of the day, The Harley Phenomenon is less about Harley Quinn and more about what happens when a company capitalizes on a character's aesthetic appeal and Cool Girl Status while largely abandoning the goal of making quality content starring the rest of their staple characters. She's certainly popular on her own and has individual appeal, but she never would have achieved the level of mainstream popularity she's enjoyed over the past 10 years without an astounding set of major coincidences all falling in her direction.

I’ve been thinking about kory so how much of her willingness to kill to achieve complete victory do you think can be ascribed to Tamaran’s culture vs her experiences with slavery and regret over not stopping her sister?
I’m not sure if the question makes sense so feel free to go idk and delete the ask lol
I’m not sure I’m qualified to answer questions about Starfire… I’ve really only read her in different Titans titles, and I’ve not kept up with if there are new versions of her backstory, other than the original (raised in a culture where they let emotions rule and then being enslaved for several years).
That being said, if you look at the Convergence NTT book, I read that as that her years in enslavement is the most important factor. On the other hand, that's an out-of-continuity book and there might very well be other books out there that tell another story.🤷🏼‍♀️
If anyone who sees this happens to know more on the subject, please feel free to add your thoughts!

comics situation update (summer 2024)
this is mainly from june onwards
comics i've finished so far (kind of in order):
new teen titans (1980)
the question (1987)
the question quarterly
the question returns
azrael plus the question
the omac project (2005)
52
checkmate (2006)
crime bible: five lessons of blood
final crisis: revelations
azrael (1995)
azrael/ash
arsenal (1998)
so it's been the summer of the question for me. it seems like i've been reading a lot of greg rucka and dennis o'neil too. azrael plus the question (and also knightquest) is what got me interested in reading azrael comics. i wanted to try reading checkmate because mem made it seem intriguing and i read the omac project because they recommended reading that first :]. also arsenal 1998!!! was so cute and nice!!! roy and lian are the father daughter duo of all time <3. yeah. i've also just been reading titans comics while on public transport so i finally got to the end of ntt (1980) at the beginning of the month.
comics that i'm in the middle of (not including ongoings):
hardware (1993)
birds of prey (1999)
the new teen titans (1984)
batman: no man's land
batman: knightfall saga
deathstroke (2016)
i think that's it. they're all pretty good and i read them at different paces.
comics i want to read (not in any particular order):
wonder woman (1987)
books of magic (idk which one but i'll investigate)
the question: convergence
lois lane (2019)
hellblazer (1988)
batman: gotham knights
i've just been meaning to read wonder woman and hellblazer for a while. also gotham knights but i'll probably hold off on that at least until i've finished nml. the question: convergence and lois lane are next on my renee reading journey. and izzy's book of magic posts were intriguing so i'm going to give it a try :].
comics i want to reread (not in any particular order):
the question: pipelines
batman/huntress: cry for blood
maybe batgirl (2000) too hehe
i might try rereading pipelines before starting the question: convergence because i think they might be connected? but also i've just been wanting to revisit it after reading more renee stories. i just love cry for blood and i want to read it again now that i've read huntress (1989) and the question (1987) because i feel like i might understand it/like it even more now with added context. batgirl 2000!!! and now i can read physical copies for puckett's run and some other parts too. but idk. maybe i'll wait a little longer.
anyway i think that's all :D

you said you were looking for asks so i thought i'd jump in with: 3 (or 5, whichever you'd prefer) favourite comics ever? if you're feeling fancy, two lists, one in terms of quality of the actual comic, and one in terms of character moments etc
Ok so i'll make a list of my top 10 and say why (i'm also not exclusively doing DC comics but they are the majority):
Batgirl (2000): do i even have to explain this one? the art and visual storytelling makes me ill, the way it explores cass's character through her relationship with established characters like bruce and babs, the way cass is so fucking unhinged, the mother-daughter comparisons with shiva&babs vs the father-daughter comparisons between cain&bruce AASSFHFKSDF. ILL.
The New Teen Titans: this one holds a lot of nostalgia for me because it was one of the first comics I read! They were the first team i really latched onto and by extension the first characters i really felt strongly about. Rereading it as an adult and seeing how it still holds up is soooo incredibly satisfying (dickkory was baby's first otp)
Spinning by Tillie Walden: technically cheating because this is a graphic novel but I'm counting it because it's included under the umbrella of sequential art. it's a autobiographical graphic novel about tillie walden's experience growing up a lesbian in the south (of the US) through their relationship with figure skating. i really relate to it and it's a massive inspiration for me and i think everyone should read it
Impulse (1995): ...i'm audhd...it hits a very special and specific place in my heart...but in all seriousness i love the shape language and the character dynamics. god the cast is soooo fun
Robin & Batman: i love introspection and this whole comic is just Dick Grayson introspection. The way it covers Dick's emotional state post his parents death and how Bruce didn't really know how to help Dick outside of guiding him in channeling his grief into being a vigilante makes me insane...also the alfred characterization in this...the implication that he thinks he made the wrong choice by enabling Bruce and wanting to rectify that by not enabling Dick...
Spider-Gwen (2015): The art and concept is what drew me into this comic. I've been a spiderman fan since I was a little kid and the idea of gwen stacy being the spider person...AND SHE WAS A DANCER.. i was hooked. I love gwen as a character on a meta level and in general; she's my girl
Convergence Batgirl: listen...the implications this comic has about steph and cass's relationship...the "what do my eye's say" scene...lovers. teeny tiny baby run but im still counting it as a comic
...Is it cheating to say Young Justice 98? Imma say Young Justice 98: it was a gateway to me finding a bunch of characters that are now my faves. It shines a spotlight on characters we don't see all that often (like Cissie, Cassie, Anita--girl i miss you) I think about this comic constantly
Tea Dragon Society: another graphic novel! this is a comfort read for me! it's cozy it's sapphic it's a low-stakes
Batman/Huntress Cry for Blood: again this feels like kind of cheating BUT its my list so this is what I'm going with. This was my introduction to Helena and omg the feelings i have about her because of this comic...she makes me bonkers...the things i'd do for this woman
Bonus: JLI (i have not ever finished this one but i've started it many times and i love it i just need to actually finish it)

alrighty, I went through my dc universe infinite history (keeping in mind, this does NOT include stuff I read on other sites or stuff I own physically. For example, somewhere I have a nearly complete collection including all of the new 52 Birds of Prey run)

growing up, new52 birds of prey was my first and only subscription to a comic, but we'd go through the $1 back issues bins all the time and just pick up whatever had a cool cover and that behavior definitely stayed with me lol
