#diabetes and cancer connection
How Diabetes Affects Cancer Risk: A Comprehensive Guide
This article is originally published on Freedom from Diabetes website, available here. Uncontrolled diabetes lead to several health complications. As the body struggles to deal with the high blood sugar levels (BSL), almost every organ from the skin to the bones, nervous system to the digestive system, is negatively impacted. Over time, this can result in a variety of health issues including heart attack, stroke, kidney damage, vision problems, Alzheimer’s disease, and even cancer!
Tumblr media
Yes, statistics show that there is a definite link between diabetes and cancer, although no validated scientific study exists as yet, there is little doubt that people with diabetes are at a higher risk of some cancers. Diabetes doubles the risk of some cancers: liver, pancreas colorectal, and breast, for instance.
Diabetes and cancer do have some common risk factors, such as age, bad diet, no physical activity and high-stress levels. These are also prime risk factors for inflammation, which is one of the key triggers for insulin resistance and increased cancer risk.
Cancer Prevention Strategies
1.Maintain your sugar level- Diabetics should try to keep their blood sugar level low. It will lower the risk of cancer.
2.Health diet- Diabetics should have a diet , including vegetable, fruits with low GI, rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, vitamins, and minerals.
Regular exercise- It’s recommended that diabetics get a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise. Including cardiovascular movements, resistance training, and flexibility & balance sessions.
Lower your stress- Stress is another big problem for insulin resistance. Try be stress free. Try for meditation. It will helpful for you.
Take a doctor's advice - It is essential that everybody, especially older populations, get their health checks done regularly. This is the best way to stay on top of any incipient health issues.
Do Diabetes Drugs Increase Cancer Risk?
There is no definitive proof that diabetes treatments increase the risk of contracting cancer. While some drugs, such as metformin reduce the risks of cancer, others might increase the risk factor. But this has by no means been substantiated.
So do not let this affect your diabetes treatment. If you’re not clear of the risks, please talk to your doctor. What is clear though is that lowering your BSL will help reduce your risk of health complications associated with diabetes, and, thus, cancer.
By following these treatment and prevention tips, you can manage diabetes and cancer effectively. To read more about this, please visit our Article. Also please connect with me on my website, Facebook page, and YouTube if you want to stay in touch or give me any feedback!

Hi peeps,
Cool company for people:
There's a small start up based out of Massachusetts that helps people improve their health. They have worked with a large variety of people with and without chronic health problems.
Their founders in research and development have been in the field of metabolomics for decades looking at how different diseases affect the metabolites in blood and how different treatments affect them. Based on their research and scientific publications, they developed a basic test that identifies areas that you can improve and provides guidance on how you can go about making the changes.
The test is a finger stick that you can do at home or through a doctor. For people with diabetes, it is the same vibes as sticking your finger for a glucose test. You send by mail about 5 drops of blood, they provide you metrics and give you recommendations that you can review with a registered nutritionist. The nutrition recommendations were developed with research and development and the dietitians so that they are nutritionally sound, based in science and feasible for the average person.
They have helped athletes, people with IBS and GI issues, chronic pain, inflammation, stress/anxiety, energy/sleep issues, diabetes, people going through or done with chemotherapy, etc.
Figured that I would spread the word since they don't seem to have a great online presence and they have really helped a lot of people.

Hi! Today I want to introduce you to my husband and I's dear friend, Abdelrahman Hajjaj.
This campaign is verified by the Butterfly Effect Project. Click here, find the "Verified Campaigns" tab, and check line #947.
Abod is 34 years old, and lives in Al Maghazi camp in Gaza. He is raising money to evacuate himself, his wife Aya, his daughter Leen, his parents, and one of his brothers. Leen was born premature and needs special care. His mother has blood cancer, his father uses a colostomy bag, and his brother is diabetic. Abod is desperate to leave Gaza and build a better life for his family elsewhere.
Tumblr media
Abod's life is extremely dangerous. Something I especially want to highlight is the condition of his house. He lives on the top floor of his building, which has no doors and is missing walls. Thin blankets are the only thing separating him and his family from the elements, and the occupation's ammunition.
Tumblr media
His daughter Leen just turned one on September 2nd, and she's able to crawl around more every day. What should be an exciting milestone also comes with a lot of dread. Abod has built barriers around the house to try and prevent Leen from crawling where it's most dangerous, but anyone who has young children knows it can be difficult to keep them out of trouble. Parents should not have to worry about their baby falling off the edge of their house, three stories to the ground below. Yet, this is just another everyday terror for Abod and Aya.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Abod and my husband are very close. They talk for hours every single day, sharing their hopes and fears with each other. A couple of weeks ago, gfm flagged Abod's campaign for verification, something you have probably seen happen to a lot of Gazan campaigns (this often leads to them being arbitrarily shut down). My husband assisted Abod with gfm's intense verification process, and thankfully it was successful. His campaign is also finally connected to a friend's bank account so he can receive funds.
Abod's campaign has not received much attention since it was created in June, and donations have been very slow. Abod does not have much hope for his campaign's success. Please help my husband and I prove him wrong.
He has only reached €7,112 of his €30,000 goal
Please share this post, and give generously and consistently to Abod's campaign. Even small donations add up quickly, so please don't hesitate!
I'm mailing mystery prints to anyone in the US who gives at least $10 (or the euro equivalent), and if you donate any amount and send me an email, I'll send you some comic PDFs (more info here).
Thank you for reading. Here is a video of Leen and her grandfather's cat :-)

Hi. I've started writing a semi-weekly TB Newsletter, if you're interested in that kind of thing. Here's the second letter--about public-private partnerships, leprosy, and my forthcoming big announcement about expanding access to tuberculosis care. You'll hear more about that on Thursday. Anyway, here's the newsletter. You can sign up here.
---
In advance of the Big Announcement this Thursday, I made a vlogbrothers video today on how we end TB–with the comprehensive care plan often known as S-T-P, which is short for “Search, Treat, and Prevent.” But one thing I didn’t discuss in that video is the downstream benefits of comprehensive TB care.
Once you’ve hired community health workers to screen for TB, it becomes much easier to screen for other illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure, and non-TB lung issues (especially lung cancer). TB is notoriously a disease of vicious cycles–a disease of malnutrition that makes malnutrition worse, a disease of poverty that makes poverty worse, and so on–but addressing TB can be a story of virtuous cycles: TB survivors become TB advocates, as I’ve seen with my friend Henry in Sierra Leone. More effective TB treatment leads to less stigmatization of the disease, as communities come to see the disease as curable and survivable rather than terrifying and deadly. And better access to TB care leads to a stronger overall healthcare system, because more community health workers are better connected to more primary healthcare clinics, which allows communities to better address all kinds of health problems.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis is not the only bacteria of its family that causes a lot of human suffering; there is a closely related species called mycobacterium leprae that causes the disease known as Hansen's Disease, or more commonly leprosy. There are still around 200,000 cases of leprosy diagnosed each year around the world, and while the disease is curable, it also remains–especially if not caught and treated early–a significant driver of suffering and disability in our world.
There are many connections between TB and leprosy: Not only are the bacteria that cause these illnesses very similar, but patients have often expressed similarities in experience. TB patients who were encouraged or forced to live in sanitariums often compared themselves to lepers. One disheartening parallel between the diseases is that in both cases, those living with these illnesses are often abandoned by their families and must make new social connections within the new community of “leper” or “consumptive.” Also, both Hansen’s Disease and TB continue to exist largely because of systemic failures rather than due to a lack of knowledge or technology.
I really recommend Dr. Salmaan Keshavjee’s TED talk about how we ended TB in the U.S., and how we can end it using the same strategy around the world.
Last link from me today: I’ve been thinking a lot about the complex intersection between public and private investment (for reasons that will be clear on Thursday!) and I keep coming back to one infographic in an excellent paper (https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0256883) about the public money that was poured into the creation of the GeneXpert Machine, which can quickly and accurately test for TB. The GeneXpert machine has created a lot of profit for Danaher’s shareholders, and it has also created some societal benefit, but it could create a lot more societal benefit if it created less profit for Danaher’s shareholders. This tension seems to me one of the defining features of 21st century life. Anyway, here is the infographic:
Tumblr media
That’s the money–over $250,000,000 of it–that came from taxpayers (mostly in the U.S. and Europe) to fund the creation of the GeneXpert Machine. And yet, this tech largely funded by the public is controlled entirely by private enterprise. I’m troubled by that model of value allocation, even if I still believe that private money and private enterprise have important roles to play in fueling innovation. But taking a quarter billion dollars of public money and then claiming total ownership over a technology, and using that ownership to deny the technology to the world’s poorest people, seems like a deeply flawed system of resource distribution to me.
I’ll see you on Thursday. I’m nervous and excited.
DFTBA,
John

GUT HEALTH: How it Affects Your body 🍽️🤍✨
Having a healthy gut is important because it plays a central role in the overall functioning of your body. The state of a healthy or unhealthy gut affects all of these things:
Digestion and Nutrient Absorption: The gut's main role is to break down food and absorb important nutrients, including vitamins and minerals. When the gut is healthy, it digests food effectively and maximizes nutrient absorption. When it is not, it can result in digestive issues such as bloating, gas, and diarrhea, as well as nutrient deficiencies.
Immune System Support: About 70% of our immune cells are located in the gut. A balanced gut supports a strong immune response, helping the body fend off illnesses and reduce the risk of infections.
Emotions and Mood: The gut and brain are intricately connected through the gut-brain axis. The gut produces many neurotransmitters, including serotonin, which regulates your mood. An imbalanced gut can influence mental health, leading to issues like anxiety, depression, and even cognitive impairments.
Hormonal Balance: The gut plays a role in the production and modulation of certain hormones. This can impact various bodily functions, from stress responses to reproductive health.
Weight Management: The gut microbiome can influence metabolism, appetite, and fat storage. An imbalanced gut can lead to weight gain and metabolic disorders.
Protection Against Chronic Diseases: Poor gut health has been linked to a higher risk of chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain types of cancer.
Detoxification: The gut plays a role in eliminating waste products and toxins from the body.
Inflammation Regulation: A healthy gut can help regulate inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation, often resulting from an imbalanced gut is a root cause of many diseases.
Skin Health: There's a connection between gut health and skin conditions. Issues like acne, eczema, and rosacea can be influenced by the state of the gut. An unhealthy gut can lead to inflammation, which may manifest as skin issues.
Barrier Function: The gut lining acts as a barrier, preventing harmful substances from entering the bloodstream. A compromised gut lining, often referred to as "leaky gut," can allow toxins and pathogens to enter the bloodstream leading to various health issues.
Production of Vital Compounds: Your gut produces essential compounds, like short-chain fatty acids, which has a lot of positive effects on health from reducing inflammation to supporting brain function.
Sleep Function: The gut produces neurotransmitters and hormones that regulate sleep, such as serotonin and melatonin. An unhealthy gut can disrupt sleep patterns.

hey! I recently realized that one of my stories has a serious lack of physically disabled characters (one secondary character has a facial difference) and I'd love advice on what physical differences and disabilities are in more intense need of representation. I know one of my characters is going to be missing a limb, but idk whether they should be an amputee or just born that way, and what limb/ where it should be missing/if it should be underdeveloped or just totally gone. I want to know what type of limb differences are most underrepresented so I can do some research and see if I could feasibly add it to my character. I'd also like to hear some other general physical disorders and disabilities that need more rep (all physical differences need more rep but yk what I mean)
Most if not all of my characters are autistic/adhd or both, although it isn't mentioned (they're just like that because I as a person can't write neurotypical people)
Hello!
As mod Rot has said before, every disability is currently underrepresented (and those that seem represented are often, well, not getting the best rep to say the least). With that said, I do know what you mean, and there are some that are less represented than others.
For a missing limb specifically it might seem like it's "overrepresented", but in reality there's a ton of limb differences that I have absolutely never seen represented in any way, shape, or form. There's simply way more options than creatives ever consider.
The most common cause of acquired amputation is actually not represented much at all - diabetes. Almost all amputations in media are traumatic, but that's not necessarily how it is.
In most cases, the smaller the amputation the more common it is. A lot of characters in media have a shoulder amputation (with a prosthetic, of course), but that's probably the rarest possible one in real life. It's also worth mentioning that the fewer joints you have, the harder it is to use a prosthetic. A knee can change everything.
If they're missing a leg, consider giving them a mobility aid - connecting to the previous point, the higher someone's amputation is the higher the chance they will use them over a prosthetic, but anyone can use them.
Or, they can use both a prosthetic and a wheelchair/crutches at different times. Or they can use prosthetics with mobility aids, like a cane, crutches, or a rollator to help with balance!
Losing a leg is also incredibly more common than an arm, but in media it's the other way around for some reason.
Congenital limb difference of the not-full-amputation variety isn't seen much either, and it has more types than I could possibly list here, but I'll try; phocomelia, symbrachydactyly, micromelia, radial aplasia, ectrodactyly, tetraamelia, polysyndactyly... The only character that I know of with any of these has been made by my friend. Certainly not a popular thing to represent.
To go with the above, think about syndromes that cause limb differences! Some examples could be Ellis–Van Creveld syndrome, Otopalatodigital syndrome spectrum disorders, Pfeiffer syndrome, Joubert syndrome, or the VACTERL association. Or a thousand other things!
Limb loss due to cancer is also a thing! It also relates to a very specific kind of amputation, called rotationplasty, and it's when a person has their knee replaced with their ankle, and their foot is well, rotated. That's how important having a joint is.
Also I know that you said limb and not limbs, but remember that multiple amputations are a thing as well! For example bilateral above knee (often called BAKA), or quadruple amputation are greatly underrepresented :-)
As for non-limb loss underrepresented physical disability ideas, well, all of them, but just for the sake of some new ideas I will try to list ones that AFAIK haven't even been mentioned on the blog at all before (at least as of writing this).
CHARGE syndrome
Hyperthyroidism
Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia
Hereditary trochlear nerve palsy
Harlequin-type Ichthyosis
Locked-in syndrome
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Primordial dwarfism
Addison's disease
Duchenne muscular dystrophy
Apert syndrome
Charcot Marie Tooth disease
Usher syndrome
Nager syndrome (also, causes limb differences)
Peripheral Artery Disease
[links lead to very basic information pages]
These are just some ideas for disabilities that are 1) physical and 2) very underrepresented, some visible, some not - I hope it gives you some ideas for what to research for your character(s)! I tried to list both very common and rare ones :-)
You can also take a look at our #disabled character ideas tag, or posts like this (there's a lot of facial differences listed, mostly at the end) :-)
I hope this helps!

True:
Cancer, diabetes, and other illnesses have always existed in the world, we just haven't always had the language the recognize and describe them.
Also true:
Environmental destruction, unsafe environments, pollution, intergenerational trauma, loss of ancestral diets, overworking, loss of community and connection, and capitalism and colonization in general have increased the rates of those illnesses and ignoring that will just make the problem worse.

Researchers have made a significant breakthrough in the development of an on-skin bioelectronic wearable sensor: the addition of wireless charging—without batteries—through a magnetic connection. The team’s innovation, an important component to its existing ultrasoft, breathable, and stretchable material, provides the foundation for gathering precise vital sign measurements like blood pressure, electrical heart activity, and skin hydration. The discovery could one day lead to early detection and timely interventions for chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Usually I try not to post too much about Long Covid on my regular FB feed. I’ve learned to just not do it. It’s best I save those posts for my support groups where I can get the support I need from people going through the same struggle.
But I need to get this off my chest.
I always knew I wanted to be an artist. I dabbled in many mediums over the years, photography, music, painting, film/media, writing, I’ve made sculptures. I truly enjoy expressing myself through various art forms, and connecting with others through that.
In 2010-2011, after years of working job after job trying to find my passion (when most of my friends were already college graduates with direction) and feeling a little lost, in the retail industry, I put my foot down, went back to school and chose a medium, & decided to pursue THAT. One medium I truly always loved: Photography. In 2012, I exhibited my work for the first time. In 2020 I opened up my first photo studio. A creative space where I can share and make memories. 1 month later, a global pandemic overturns our worlds and realities. I never would have imagined, that, in our lifetime. You just don’t think it could happen to you (to us). But it did. It’s still so surreal to me.
I got sick with Covid twice. I knew some people who had covid over 4-8 times. I had it twice. It only took that first bout with the virus to completely change my life. My body. My mind. My worries. My perspective. My whole world. And my future. I thought I almost had it figured out, my path, my plans, my goals. What I wanted to do, and where I wanted to go. Who I wanted to be. Now i’m grateful that I make it through my day, without collapsing. (which has happened and was very scary). My last two photography jobs, I couldn’t feel my hands. It’s why I’ve been so inactive, since I got sick. Whats going to happen when I can’t take pictures anymore?
When I tested positive for the first time, I cried in the cab ride home. I was beyond terrified. What will this mean? Will I survive this? What is going to happen. I thought if I can get through the virus and live, that’s all I could want. Some months before, I had lost a high school friend, a fellow musician, to Coronavirus. He was only 32 years old. We didn’t know what would happen. Who was at risk of death. After 9 or 10 days, with the virus. I tested negative, and returned to work. Feeling good, that I survived. Especially after day 4, when I woke up gasping for air in the night. I feared I wouldn’t wake up. I got blamed for testing positive by people around me. It was “my fault”. For “not being careful”. I felt so alienated. After I returned to work, I was preparing to move, packing, organizing, purging. One day, I could not get out of bed. And strange heavy symptoms. I thought I had Covid again. Of course the test came back negative.
But I would never be the same again. I never fully recovered from getting sick. Stuck back in 2020.
Do you know what it’s like? I see the world moving on. Almost like it never happened. Our government lying and covering up facts/truth. We are still sick. Still here. 18 million people in America are still sick with Post Covid syndrome. I’m left to feel like it’s my fault..I’m to blame. Because I “didn’t take care of myself.” Would you say that to someone with cancer? Or fibromyalgia? Or heart problems? Or Alzheimer’s? Or diabetes? Or any other illness? The stigma I’m (and we are) facing is unreal. People don’t believe me when I say “I still can’t taste and smell” and that I’m chronically ill now. “You don’t look sick”. “It’s because you party too much”. “you’re getting older” “it’s all those long nights you work on your feet”. I’ve heard it all. “But I see you at the bar working”. I have to work. There is no disability, go fund me, or assistance. I have to pay my rent. On my own. So I need to work. But just because you see me, at work, doesn’t mean I’m well. It just means I’m pushing myself to stay alive. It’s been true torture working through all this. I mourn and grieve for weeks and months at a time. It hasn’t stopped. It took me a long time, to accept that this is not going away anytime soon.
And my heart is broken. I feel left out in the rain. By our leaders, scientists, doctors, friends I thought I had. There is no community support. Even if someone believes you’re sick. No funding/fundraisers for LC. There is no cure, no pill, no treatment, no progress in finding treatment or biomarkers in the body to be able to even test for LC. The unpredictability of it. The symptoms. It’s really been torturous. Torture. A true nightmare. Having to sit in the shower so I don’t fall. Or hit my head (again) Doubling heart rate just upon standing. I get winded just talking and singing karaoke. I forget everything now. I slur my speech, sober. Tremors like Parkinsonism. My memory loss and constant issues feel like dementia-brain fog. I forget how to spell now. my hands turn purple red and blue when I step out of the shower. Migraines that last for months. Months. I take Tylenol like it’s medication. Neuropathy, nerve pain, nerve itches, tingling and numbness. My body temperature can’t regulate, so I often am cold and hot simultaneously. How do you remedy that? The discomfort and distress I feel is unbearable. Loosing clumps of hair. My hair is greying more and more rapidly post covid. Brittle nails. Skin issues. Digestive issues. Eye problems. Cognitive difficulties. Joint pain. Muscle pain. Muscle atrophy. Weakness. Severe severe fatigue. Almost like you worked out at the gym, full body then took a benadryl. Every. Fucking. Day. I’m tired of being so fucking tired. Before Covid, people would always have to tell me to slow down. Working full time, school, internships, photography, going to the gym full time. I always took on so much. I had so much energy and drive. It was a fire in me.
Now it’s gone. A piece of me has died, undoubtedly. And I question everything now. Most days I’m afraid to leave my house. And don’t. Unless it’s to work. If I do leave my house, it’s because I’m pushing myself, and I’m not well. My anxiety and depression are much worse. Chronic illness has also taken its toll on my mental health. It’s been draining trying to keep up with the world. I feel left behind. I’m not only mourning my health, and my abilities, but my passion in life, the one thing I worked so hard for. My future. And Photography. What do I do, if I can’t create anymore? What purpose do I have?
No one believes me, or think LC exists. And if I don’t “show up”, it’s because “she’s a flake”. I’m in such a dark place you may never understand. How do I navigate this life? Being sick every day.

Diabetes and Cancer: Does Diabetes Cause Cancer?
This article is originally published on Freedom from Diabetes website, available here.
People with out-of-control Type 2 diabetes have a 39% higher risk of developing cancer. Men are more likely to suffer prostate cancer. Women have a 17% higher risk of getting breast cancer. People with type 2 diabetes are also likely to develop cancers of the liver, pancreas, and colon.
If you have pre-diabetes, you are still at risk. Studies have shown an association between pre-diabetes and increased cancer risk of colorectal, lung, liver, ovarian, pancreatic, and prostate cancers. These findings correspond to a certain extent to the increase in testing and improvement in diagnostic technology.

How did historical people deal with hiccups?
Like do we know?
I hate you for burdening me with this question/nsrs
I found basically nothing that actually answers your question, but here’s some info i found thats somewhat relevant
Hiccups are a result of our evolution from fish, who have a respiratory process designed to separate water from oxygen. We maintain some of this respiratory structure, so when triggered, our diaphragm contracts followed by the closure of vocal chords, which causes the “hic” sound. There’s actually a few more muscles involved in this process, but i literally dont care, im not a stem major
Hiccups have very many causes, but the most common ones you’ll experience are from feeling nervous or excited, alcohol consumption, spicy foods, carbonated drinks, stress, overeating, or chewing gum. They can actually be caused by serious health issues as well, such as cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, or central nervous system damage, however in these cases, they last a lot longer than a few minutes. For example, Charles Osborn (1893-1991) hiccuped for 68 years straight after a bad encounter with a hog.
The word “hiccup” stems from the word “hiccough” from 16th century English, showing their association with the act of coughing. Additionally, in Old English used throughout the medieval age, the word for it translates to “elf heartburn” because they were believed to be caused by elves. Either way, they seem to have always been viewed as a normal bodily function
You might have heard older generations say that hiccups mean that one of your friends is talking about you, and if you go through a mental list of your friends and find the person who is doing the talking, they’ll stop. This belief seems to stem from the Northern states of India, where they believe hiccups are connected with the evil eye, and that someone close to you is sending negative energy your way
Anyway, that’s all that I found. I wrote this instead of writing my college application letters so. Clearly i have priorities. I hope you at least learned something from this, because I actually had a lot of fun (i love etymology)

An elder testifying at the inquiry into Innu children in care says colonization has hurt the Innu way of life, and its impact can be seen in the worsening health of her community.
Tshaukuesh Elizabeth Penashue testified Friday — the fifth day of the Inquiry into the Treatment, Experiences, and Outcomes of Innu in the Child Protection System in Sheshatshiu — that the Innu used to have everything Nutshimit, an Innu word that means "on the land."
"Innu ate animals fresh every day," she said. But diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer and kidney problems have become prevalent, and she blames the influence of the government and priests who disrupted the Innu's connection to their traditional way of life.
She remembers seeing the attempts of colonization first-hand as a child, when a priest suggested to Penashue's father that he stop going out on the land to hunt so his children would be able to go to school. [...]

OC: Lance Sheehan
Tumblr media
Basic Info
Name: Lance Sheehan
Alias(es):
Date of birth: July 05 2037
Zodiac sign: Cancer

Place of Birth: Night City, Charter Hill
Sexuality: Polysexual
Appearance
Height: 5’ 11
Build: Average, modestly athletic
Hair: Dark brown

Synth skin with enhanced sensitivity (helps during operations) as well as sensors for monitoring his clients vitals. Upper face plate contains more optical sensor arrays connected to his eyes. Second heart. Electrical discharge cybernetics in his hands, primarily for defibrillation purposes.
Background
Languages: English, Gaeilge, Spanish
Affiliations
Arasaka: former subsidiary employee
Occupation: Ripperdoc
Role: Full-body conversion, Netrunning and neurological cybernetics specialist as well as general Ripperdoc skills.
Weapons: Can use his defibrillator cybernetics as a weapon but at a much higher voltage.
Lance was born to wealthy parents and enjoyed a comfortable and relatively privileged life as he grew up in Night City. His education led him into cybernetic medicine where he gained a wealth of experience from some of the best clinics across the world. His family unlocked many doors and opportunities for him but he was very aware that this wasn’t the case for many others.
Tumblr media
Lance returned to Night City employed in an Arasaka subsidiary company who installed and maintained the cyberwear of their employees and students who were in their employment programme. Lance was put on a team who were part of research into how cybernetics and cyberpsychosis are linked. The research focused around full or near full body conversions. Four groups were involved; one consisted of voluntary subjects who were given cybernetics and their new bodies looked the same as their organic one. The second group consisted of subjects who didn’t volunteer and didn’t know what was to happen but left as a full or near full body conversion looking as they had before with the expected changes they had gone in for. The third group consisted of people who had been told they were going in for a full body conversion but were not given anything new. Finally the control group went in for routine installations. The teams did the work as if it was routine and had been informed and presented with documents saying all of the patients consented to whatever procedure the research leads had designated them for.
Lance was the lead ripper of one of the teams and operated on Voss who believed he was in for something else but left as a near full body conversion. It wasn’t until later when Bernice hacked files from the company that Lance found out about the experiments. He lived with deep shame and guilt after that and it impacted him in many ways around he approaches consent both personally and professionally.
He didn’t know about Voss until he connected and found his name as the one who signed off his conversion when he reviewed Voss' records. Voss never knew as all his work when in Arasaka had been done by the corporation rippers and after nobody commented because it wasn’t relevant to the work being done.
Lance is an ambitious and focused person but somehow he does this without stepping on others to get to where he wants. It could be his outgoing and pleasant personality or it could be that he is just that good at his work or perhaps a bit of both.
Either way, Lance is successful in his work and makes a very comfortable living. He takes his work seriously, is methodical, organised and calm nerves.

Some of the higher end Rippers might like to see themselves as medical rock stars but Lance prefers to let his work speak for itself. There’s no room for showmanship when you’re operating on delicate neurocybernetics or with cutting edge pieces that cost a small fortune. People go to him because he is reliable, steady and has a wonderful consultation process to help his clients get the best out of their cyberwear.
Lance’s perfectionist tendencies however can be a problem which he knows he must keep tabs on as it can lead to more stress than is healthy.
Despite what he learned, Lance continued working as a Ripperdoc. In a way he wasn’t surprised he was lied to as he’d have refused to operate on people who were being misled and many corporations were the same when it came to their ethics. Lance only wants to do right by people in a world which pushes them all to the limits.
He has great sympathy for Voss when he finds out he was responsible. Some may view him telling Voss the truth as the wrong thing to do, and even dangerous but in time they are friendly and Voss goes to him for Ripperdoc work. Who better than the person who made him and knows the original work so well?
He has no partner and no relationship currently. Work often makes it difficult, among other reasons. Lance is a regular client of Charlie’s; Lance has a thing for elves and finds Charlie’s manner and professionalism exactly what he needs.

Jesus Christ can we actually support each other please. If someone’s trying to boycott and is struggling don’t say shit like “well it’s all processed garbage anyway, just eat real food!!” As if poor people in food deserts can suddenly drop any and all food with any vague connection to Israel in favour of local farmers markets, which even in the best of circumstances are often overpriced and hard to get to without transportation. Literally just read a Facebook post saying nestle and Unilever (who manufacture basically 90% of any packaged foods and personal care products) are “junk/poison” anyway so “who needs them”.
Ok yeah like telling people who consume these things they’re shameful by eating junk or cancer or whatever hasn’t been tried before.
There’s people literally making note of every single company involved in Israel, economic ties or not (and slowly discovering it’s quite literally all of them!) and thinking avoiding ALL of these companies including detergent and soap, baby formula, personal care - pretty much packaged food and drinks - as examples - is a realistic goal. Certainly avoid those companies where feasible, but there’s a reason BDS boycotts are TARGETED. Starbucks is easily avoidable, avoiding any and all packaged foods within your price range is not.
“Just buy local” is a choice really only available if you’re well off and happen to have easy access to these things.
For example, saw someone say they had a friend struggling to give up Coke. The typical response was well “tell them to stop drinking liquid poison and try lemon water instead” or some similar, inane response. As if a person addicted to pop really hasn’t thought of subbing out fucking water it hasn’t been told by people they’re guzzling diabetes or whatever. In reality, there are alternate brands of pop like PC, that name pretty close no name replicas of these brand name pops.
I imagine if this person might have been helped with this information instead of shamed it might be a more effective approach. At the very least, stop telling people that they should just “stop consuming poison”. That is not a realistic approach.
Obviously, it should go without saying, it is not the job of Palestinian people to comfort westerners over their boycott issues. But for the (normally fellow white people in my experience) who make it their life goal to just shame and shout at people instead of provide realistic options, we’ve known for a long time shame is not an effective tactic and shaming poor people for not eating organic greens or whatever the fuck is classist and garbage.
If we had a sense of community we would be helping people struggling by giving them realistic alternatives and supporting them so more people can join on. Helping someone switch over to another soda brand is infinitely more effective than telling them to stop drinking poison and shaming them away.

Not to get too personal but I’ve spoken before about how I’ve never met my biological father, I know very little about him. And I’ve never been one of those people who wanted to connect with biological family, I’ve never had that impulse, but recently I realised that every time I’ve filled in a form which asks about my family medical history I’ve just been guessing. Like my biological father’s family could have high levels of diabetes or cancer or some genetic condition that doesn’t materialise until you’re in your 30s and I would have absolutely no idea. And that is a really strange realisation
