maybe it's common but recently I've been doing this and I'm wasaay more happy with my creative process and the end products. I used to just add more shading and color or whatever to try to make it look good but it was the equivalent of putting makeup on a corpse.

"it's double effort" maybe, but if it helps you make your art something you're actually comfortable and happy with, then it's worth it!
