Imagine, if you will, a match in TF2 where there is a Soldier on the enemy team. Of course he is using the Original, as these types of players always seem to do. He has a Medic. Your team, well...I think they might have just installed the game.
What I am trying to say here is I don't think that Soldier died even ONCE! (Actually he did and I was the cause of it but that matters jack shit if he still gets to dominate me anyways just because of my rotten luck.)

When the test subject they told you was aggressive is actually just angsty and autistic
.
I figured if Wheatley were a human he would probably be part of a team that cares for test subjects. Which involves basic medical checkups and general wellness checks. Maybe in Chells case, since she’s so anti-social, he was tasked to be a sort of companion so they could get more information out of her for testing purposes. :3 he’s classified as a nurse and has basic training in it. But he’s not making sense because he’s kinda scared of Chell at first. She just thinks he’s weird and kinda smells bad.
.
I have a hc on why Chell is a test subject I’m just gonna try to write it here
Basically her mother was too young and poor to raise a child so she felt it better to put Chell up for adoption. The orphanage she was raised in was being used by aperture to scout out children with certain “exceptional skills”. They noticed that Chell was highly intelligent and a great problem solver, but had no interest in spending time with others. She had no friends. And none of the other children noticed or cared when she left. She was probably adopted by a high ranking scientist and raised for the specific purpose of testing. She has little concept of social norms or things outside of aperture because she was taken from a “normal” environment so young. [like. Before she was 10 maybe? Idk.] but it doesn’t mean she’s dumb or anything, she just doesn’t really get it yk. Sorry if this is actually so stupid and embarrassing ignore me

The 118 doing an escape room:
Buck gets laser focused on a red herring and wastes twenty minutes trying to solve it
Hen starts complaining about medical inaccuracies on a very obviously fake body
Eddie gets distracted and doesn't realize he managed to open one of the locks thirty minutes ago
Chim becomes convinced something is a movie reference (it's not) and throws out completely incorrect suggestions for ten minutes
Bobby just gives up because somehow his team of highly skilled firefighters are all morons the moment they take off their uniforms

A fascinating insight into the inner workings of our esteemed flagship!

Sorry for being insane , and for the horrible graphic design .. anyways here's the text on the pages if you have difficulty reading it

POPULAR TROLLMECHANICS
THINKING ABOUT REFFITING YOUR ENGINES ?: Check out our picks for the best helm accessories available on the market today, with advice to help you make the perfect choice for your ship P.54
THE MOST POWERFUL EQUIPMENT NEEDS THE BEST ENGINEERS!: Learn all about the thorough maintenance routine Her Imperious Condescension's skilled team of engineers stick to to ensure that the most powerful (and oldest!) engine in our mighty fleet keeps running for thousands more sweeps! .

HYGIENE, REPAIR AND HEALTH
"Something a lot of newer crews miss, is the importance of hygiene".
The empress is known to put a lot of emphasis on keeping her iconic helmsman intact and in good enough shape to power her ship perpetually , and so her engineering team is highly trained and capable in both the mechanical and the more medical aspects of helm care. The chief engineer told us all about the philosophy present on the imperial flagship: "On this ship we really believe that keeping the helmsman physically healthy by seeing to its biological needs , similar to yours or mine, such as brushing its teeth or washing its hair, is the key for a long lasting engine". Working with such dated equipment is not without its challenges, but the crew -
A small change in your outlook on helm maintenance could make your engine last a lot longer, and stronger!
Touring the flagship made it evident that while the helmsman is not a living, sentient troll such as the actual crew manning the ship, it is still more similar to them than to the computers surrounding it. For this reason, it should come as no surprise that it can fall victim to ailments like sicknesses and disorders comparably to any living troll. The crew stresses that these problems can easily be avoided by simply spending a few minutes each day, or at least once a week, practicing basic care on your helmsman. Our team met with a specialist who recalled encountering a rotting, sick, and weak helmsman powering a smaller spacecraft they had once visited to oversee maintenance. No wonder the ship was running slow and unreliably! See, a lot of captains are repulsed by their engine, and want to avoid seeing it as much as possible. This is the wrong approach!
Hygiene for your helmsman should be thorough and even down to the teeth, as they are the source of many infections. Just be careful not to get bitten!

When the system goes down and the dinosaurs escape with evacuation impossible, it’s up to you and a ragtag team to restore order and protect both man and dinosaur.
-> ROMANTIC OPTIONS <-
GRAY/GRACE COLLINS [M/F] - Your big boss is cool, calm, and ruthless. It is well known that they’re not someone to cross, however, they seem have a soft spot for you which some might consider strange considering they also happen to be your ex-fiancé(e). [Poly with Nikolaj available].
LEE MIN-SUN [M/F/NB] - As Operations Manager of the Island, Lee is no-nonsense, grumpy, and has no real time for the corporate side of things that xe’s forced to deal with, but xe has a heart of gold under all the bluster and would do anything to protect those that xe cares for. [Poly with Aija available].
NIKOLAJ OLESEN [M] - He’s your best friend and the embodiment of the term ‘golden retriever energy’. He’s also the head raptor keeper. You’re not entirely sure how those two things go together, but it seems that you’re about to find out. [Poly with Gray/Grace available].
CIERRA DE LA ROSA [F] - A tourist that is vacationing on the island for the third time. You’ve met her a handful of times during those visits, but you haven’t found out much about her beyond her name and the fact that she’s one of the most beautiful women you’ve ever seen.
AIJA MISHRA [NB] - Highly intelligent and more at home among computers than people, Aija is a techie who works in the control room. They’re one of the friendliest and sassiest people you’ve ever met, but, in a crisis, there’s no one you’d rather have on your side. [Poly with Lee available].

Skill stats will include intelligence, charisma, marksmanship, agility, and science and technology,

Hey, could you do an Amelia Shepherd x fem!reader where they are in the OR and one of the interns is just starring at Amelia the whole time and reader gets mad (reader is the head of cardiothoracic surgery and she and Amelia have been together for a long time now)
Tumblr media
Authors note: I promised you, so here is a new story from me. I hope you like it & I'll try to post and write a little more from now on. I promise ♥
ᕚ---ᕘ
The fluorescent lights of the operating room cast harsh shadows on the concentrated faces of the medical team gathered around the operating table. The atmosphere was tense, the silence broken only by the quiet hum of medical equipment. Dr. Amelia Shepherd stood at the head of the table, her gaze focused on the tiny area of the brain she was trying to operate on with extreme precision. Next to her stood you, the head of cardiothoracic surgery, whose hands calmly and confidently guided the instruments to stabilize the patient's heart.
It was a highly complex operation in which every movement had to be precise to the millimeter in order to preserve the patient's life. The surgical light shone into the interior of the open chest, and despite the bright light and busy, intense activity of the situation, you noticed something unusual out of the corner of your eye.
One of the interns, a young doctor in training, who was attending the procedure didn't seem to have his attention focused on the operation, but instead stared steadily at Amelia. His looks weren't one of admiration for her surgical skills, but of something else - something you couldn't approve of.
A feeling of anger and annoyance rose within you as you noticed the inappropriate attention from him. Why couldn't he concentrate on his work and why did he have to stare at your partner like she was the only thing that mattered?
You felt your heart rate increase and you forced yourself to stay calm so as not to jeopardize the operation. But the sight of the intern looking at Amelia with obvious interest gnawed at her. Was it jealousy you felt? Or just annoyed at the lack of professionalism?
Determined to clarify the situation, you abruptly turned to the intern, your expression serious and stern. "Hey, eyes on the operation!" you snapped, your voice sharp and unmistakable. "Dr. Kwan, this is not an act, this is a vital operation. If you are unable to concentrate, please leave this operating room!"
The intern jumped as if snapped out of a daydream and quickly looked down, his cheeks reddening with embarrassment. "I'm sorry, Dr. l/n. I'll concentrate on the operation immediately," he murmured before hastily shifting his gaze from the neurosurgeon and focusing back on his tasks.
You took a deep breath, your anger slowly fading as you saw the intern focusing back on his work. But the feeling of unrest remained. As you continued to run the operation, you felt a pang of worry in your heart. Was there more to your emotional outburst - an unpleasant hint of jealousy that you couldn't ignore? Was your relationship really as strong as it seemed, or would the shadows of insecurity and jealousy tear you apart before you even had a chance to grow closer?
The situation in the operating room became increasingly complicated when Dr. Kwan continued to stare at Amelia with inappropriate looks minutes later instead of concentrating on his work. Despite your previous admonition, the young doctor seemed unable to take his eyes off the brunette, and this distraction was beginning to negatively impact the quality of the operation.
Suddenly, in the middle of an intense moment, the monitors around you started beeping wildly and a critical condition jeopardized the entire course of the operation when the intern made a mistake. The patient's vital signs spiraled out of control when an important instrument slipped from his hand, further aggravating the patient's already weakened condition.
"Damn, we're losing him! Y/n, talk to me, what happened?" Amelia shouted, desperately trying to control her position on the brain. The brunette felt the pressure in your body rising as the entire team around you reacted frantically, feeding you everything you needed to avert the impending loss of the patient. "Pericardium was injured. I'm trying to repair it."
You didn't have time to talk. You reacted quickly and precisely, your hands working to the rhythm of a well-oiled mechanism as any professional duty outweighed any personal sentiments. But despite your quick efforts, the patient's condition didn't seem to be improving. Time seemed to stand still as you found yourself in a desperate fight to save the life of the person lying on the operating table in front of you.
Minutes passed, but for you and Amelia it felt like an eternity. The exertion and stress began to take its toll, but you continued to fight, every move crucial before another unexpected complication arose, making the situation even more desperate. An artery that was directly underneath where the instrument slipped began to bleed uncontrollably, and the blood streamed into the surgical area, dangerously close to the patient's heart.
"Damned!" you scolded, pushing the intern, who was still standing at your side in shock, out of the way to give you more space. "Y/n, you can do it. Keep a calm head, you know how it works. You're the best in your field." Your partner spoke calmly and you took a deep breath before sharpening your focus, her voice and words always keeping you at bay.
You worked feverishly to control the bleeding while the neurosurgeon tried to continue the brain procedure. Time seemed to continue to stretch and distort, each second becoming an eternity as you were caught in a desperate dance between life and death.
Despite all the odds, you didn't give up. You continued to fight, your hands melding together in a choreographed dance of survival. And amidst the chaos and hustle and bustle, you finally managed to stop the bleeding and save the patient from imminent death.
But the anger towards the intern was bubbling inside you. When the immediate danger had passed and you could turn your attention back to the root cause of the operation, you turned your burning anger on the young doctor.
"What the hell are you thinking, acting like a schoolboy in love while we're here fighting for someone's life?" you shouted at Dr. Kwan, your voice filled with a mixture of anger and disappointment. "You have a responsibility to this patient and the entire medical team, and your unprofessional attitude of pandering on my wife not only endangered his life, but also the career of everyone in this room!"
The young doctor lowered his eyes in shame, his cheeks once again coloring with shame. "I'm sorry, Dr. l/n. I was careless and it won't happen again." he stammered, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Damn right it won't. For the time being, you won't be able to see the inside of an operating room anymore." You spoke, taking a deep breath, your anger slowly giving way to exhaustion as you felt the tension inside you slowly release. You turned back to the patient, your mind focused on the final task in front of you as you ordered the intern to leave the room.
In the hours that followed, Amelia and you worked tirelessly to continue to keep the patient stable and ensure he would survive the surgery. And as the first signs of success appeared and the monitors flashed gently in confirmation, you felt a moment of gratitude.
But amidst the triumph of saving someone's life also lay an uncomfortable realization - that the lines between professional duty and personal emotions could sometimes become blurred, and that life's challenges exist not only in the operating room but also in the relationships between people.

Spring has come to me
Shohei Ohtani x Reader (female pronouns)
Synopsis: A story of love between the team physician and the superstar of the team.
Tumblr media
Author's note: Hey y'all this is my first ever fic! I have been reading fics since forever and have been contemplating on making my own for the longest time and well my first piece is dedicated to Shohei Ohtani, since not much people write for this talented gorgeous man, I figured why not. Feedbacks are highly appreciated, altho pls don't be mean :< i didn't check for grammar or punctuation mistakes so I'm sorry for dat :>> there might also be some mistakes abt team technicalities and dynamics sooo :3
Working as part of the Dodgers' medical team was not really the dream but the opportunity was dropped into your lap and you'd be a fool not to take it. Spring training has started but not everyone on the team has been on the field as consistently as the star player of the team, Shohei Ohtani. Without fail he has been on the stadium even before beginning spring training. As part of the medical team you have been corresponding closely with the rehabilitation personnel that works closely with the players, most notably Shohei. It was slightly different from working in a hospital but certainly a lot less work and stress. Although the higher ups breathing down your neck making sure the star was going to be alright might be causing you a headache. You weren't much for baseball or sports in general, what with being an over achiever who seeks validation through academics, never having much extra curricular unless it involves the academe, despite that though, you have certainly heard of the name Shohei Ohtani and the ripples of his achievements.
You were at your office, contemplating the best course of care to be administered to common baseball injuries and rehabilitation, personalized treatment, the best apparatus to use. Your mind running through every possible scenario and making contingency plan for each. Not only is your skill and credibility as a professional on the line but also a player's professional career. Everything has to be perfect. Nothing more, nothing less.
A knock came through the door, "Come in" you called.
"Hey would you like to meet the players? They're out on the field right now, I figured we introduce you", Called out a staff member as he entered through the door.
"Yeah, sure. Let me just save this and I'll be right out."
There wasn't much distance to walk out on the field, you see the long stretch of players talking amongst themselves, stretching, checking out their equipments.
"Alright, everyone listen up. This is the new team physician joining us this season. She will be corresponding with the medical staff and personnel in ensuring the best care and treatment for every single one of you. She is one of the best in orthopedics. I expect that you guys will heed her advices regarding to your health." The team manager gathered everyone near him and had me introduce myself to everyone present.
Everyone had the opportunity to introduce themselves, accompanied by a handshake. Soon it was the superstar's turn. A hand that shook yours in greeting, dwarfing it in his roughed up hand. He gave you a smile that reached his eyes, you like his eyes, you decide. Like crescent moons as he gives a slight chuckle.
It wasn't all that hard to get occupied with Shohei's matters, you had to correspond with his surgeon about his recent surgery, you had to be in constant communication with the physical therapist in charge of him and you had to plan and administer the best care for his current state. One might say that you are too focused on him despite being the team physician but that is just the effect of having a $700 million player in your care. Not a thing spared if it's for his well-being. Besides he's the only player in the current roster with the most recent surgery done and you'll be damned if he's not good to go when the season starts.
Being in close proximity with him made you realize things about him. The talent he has and the grit he puts in everything he does on the field makes him the amazing player that he is, you have not seen someone as dedicated as he was in their craft. He's meticulous in his actions, moves with intention. Careful and purposeful. When he is off the zone, his laughter rings, albeit like a hyena. Wide smiles and the carefree way he carries himself. So carefree but so sure. You have never seen him look like he was out of place in his new team. He always looked like he belonged where he is, wherever might that be. An energy so magnetic but the type of magnetism that pulls you in slowly, carefully, like a smooth caress and then when you least expect it you were pulled into his orbit and you were none the wiser.
It started when he would be in your space. Rushing towards you as he finishes his set, like he has a special radar that is exclusively for you. Whether you're observing him or the other players or talking to other staff members. Nothing will stop him from going to you. Smiling down at you with a boyish smile, engaging you in conversations like "What have you been up to?", "Are you here to supervise?", "Are you here to see me?", "I'm gonna practice my batting today, can you check my form?". It flustered you at first but it has been such a common occurence that it has failed to phase you anymore.
Then, he would message you outside working hours. Sending pictures and videos of his adventures with Dekopin, fully taking advantage at the fact that you are weak for cute animals. You guys would talk about the everyday mundane things like the weather, food, hobbies and many other things. Then came more personal questions that dug deeper to reveal more of each other. A peek inside this amazing athlete, the person inside. Grasping the melancholy he feels, the little joys in his days, the trepidation that tomorrow brings, the pressure of the pedestal that he was put on. He seemed a little more human, a little more relatable. A little more like a boy who dreamed big and is now living it but still grasping at what was lost.
Then came the invites. Inviting you outside working hours for food, hanging out at his home, tagging along at Dekopin's vet appointments and anywhere else you could think of. Of course, there is definetely skepticisms and wariness with all these invites. He was a man who has his whole country watching him through the media's lenses, whether it be from reputable sources or the tabloids. For him to be seen with a woman was a sentence. Sentenced to be lump into rumors and gossips. The man of the hour and his partner. It was a headline just waiting to happen. But you reasoned with yourself. Surely they are aware that you are one of the team physicians, right? Surely they'll think it's just an appointment outside working hours, a bit unconventional but people wouldn't think you guys are together, right? Right. No one will think so. You were just a team doctor hanging out with one of your team's player, nothing more. You said in your head like a mantra, as you accept his offers to go out. Truly hoping for it to be the case.
The realization came to you on a quiet night. You didn't mind the closeness of Shohei, you didn't mind that he would come running to you whenever he sees you, in fact you enjoyed seeing him jog to you and grace you with that ever so handsome smile of his. He fills your head with mindless ramblings and chats, you think you would hate it since you have learned to value silence as your companion but you found out you didn't. His voice and presence now accompanies you too. You found that you didn't mind being linked to him. You didn't mind if your face or name will be plastered on a headline on Japanese newspapers or tabloids by tomorrow. You didn't mind people writing about you and your relationship. It really doesn't matter. What matters is if he is happy, it matters if he is comfortable with you accompanying him to whatever and wherever and well, he is happy, he is comfortable. What matters is that you love him. You have learned that Shohei has wormed his way to your heart slowly but surely and he is there to stay, taking hold of a chunk of your heart. Ready to hold his hand tightly and face the world. Courageously love and be loved.
Shohei was intrigued by you, you were young, the youngest physician he has seen on the team and yet you managed to be one of the best orthopedic in the country and landing a job at Dodgers, well he might have also been struck by your outwardly appearance and honestly he isn't shy to admit that. You are beautiful.
You are a constant presence in his training, checking up on him and the others, taking special care of him and his recent surgery. He noticed how you're a little stoic, maintaining that air of professionalism like an armor, your brilliance showing through the improved physical care of the players and everyone surely took notice of it. But you were also coy, giving him small smiles or chuckles when he finds courage to talk to you or when you're assisting him on his rehab exercises, putting slight pressure on his forearms and chest, eyes shyly meeting his. It never fails to makes his heart flutter like a teenager.
You had a strong wall built around you, from past hurt, perhaps? He doesn't know but he vowed to himself that he will do anything to break it down or climb his way up over to you. Meticulously planning everything to give his heart and to have yours.
Shohei figures that you love cute and loveable things and he thinks Dekopin could be the best wingman for the job. He was cute and loveable, the perfect tool, the perfect excuse to message you. He knows you couldn't resist and from then on he would talk and talk until you'd answer, he didn't mind waiting he knows you're busy and he knows you might not be used to it. It's okay he'll glady start the conversation if it means getting to talk to you. He's patient and he will wait until you come around. The conversations turn personal at one point and he saw a little more of you. The anxious, perfectionist that is a tad bit hard on herself. A tortured genius, if you will. He can sympathize with you in that regard, with both being young people on such peaks of successes, people from your respective fields waiting on your next moves, ready to pounce when the chance arises. It's exhausting but he figured he wouldn't mind being exhausted together.
Shohei knows he's always being watched, he knows paparazzi are lurking at corners near the stadium, near his home, and wherever places he frequents to. He admits it is a little selfish of him to invite you to his home, or wherever outside work. He knows there is a big possibility of getting caught and photographed but he couldn't give a damn. He doesn't care if people speculates about his romantic life if it is with you. He doesn't mind giving out a statement that you and him are at a stage of getting to know each other. He doesn't mind declaring to the world that he only has eyes for you. He knows he's selfish, the press might hound you and pick you apart so he's careful when inviting you out. Always at odd hours, using an unusual and discreet car, making sure to cover your face when arriving and leaving his home. Yes, he is selfish but he is not to put you in any kind of pressure and danger. He cares about you too much to be too selfish.
On a perfect breezy midnight of spring he received a call from you, asking him if he was awake. His heart quickens, mouth dries a little, he answered you "Yes", with a light waver in his voice.
"Alright, wait for me, I'm coming over."
"Okay, I'll be waiting for you. Be safe."
His heart stutters in his chest, you have never called him first, never initiated on coming to his house, he was a little scared but your voice seems resolute like there is something that has to be done and he hopes deep deep in his heart that it is what he think it is.
You came knocking on his door after a few minutes and Shohei almost falls over trying to get to the door to get you. And there you were in your full glory, a little disheveled in your most comfortable sweater and sweats. The breeze caressing your hair, your skin. Shohei can't believe that he starts to get a little jealous of the way the breeze kisses you and be so upclose to you. You also take him in, in his loungewear shorts and thin sweatshirt, tousled hair and a slight pink tint to his full cheeks.
"May I come in?"
He's stunned for a little bit then clears his throat and replies, "Of course, come on in. Don't mind the mess Dekopin just destroyed another one of his toys".
As you guys shuffled inside his home, the air stills and there's an undeniable tension between the two of you. Shyly meeting each other's gaze for a minute and like magnets you draw towards each other. Timidly, you put your hands against Shohei's chest, both your hearts jumping out of your ribcages at the action.
"Is this okay?", you asked looking up at him through your eyelashes. Eyes flitting between his eyes and his lips. Shohei noticed the action and wrapped his arms around your torso, bringing you impossibly closer to him, he needs to feel you, he needs to feel your skin on his, your breath on his skin, your lips on his.
"Yes", he replied as he carefully places one of his hand on the back of your head. Slowly inching towards your lips.
"Is this also okay?", he asked lips almost touching yours as he spoke. You didn't waste your time and finally have your lips meet in a sweet embrace that slowly deepened into a dance of lips flitting at each other. The kiss was sweet and sensual, just like him, you think. The kiss was everything the both of you have hoped for. A kiss that says everything and a kiss that seals everything. You finally break away from each other to catch your breath, but lips still touching each other, exhanging breathes, panting on each other's lips.
"Thank you for being patient with me. I love you." You said to him, lips touching his as you speak. He gives you a long peck.
"I'll be here always waiting for you, I love you too. I love you." He utters to you sweetly, saying the last part in his native tongue. Conveying all the love he has in those words. He hopes that you can feel his sincerity, if not then he'll just have to show it to you every time until you can feel it.
Truly, spring has come and bloomed love both to you and Shohei.
A/N: I've been inspired by what the phrase "Spring has come" mean to both Korean and Japanese language ik its not yet spring but yeah I just rlly wanted to write about this. Hope you guys enjoyed it <3

When you hear "fintech," think "unlicensed bank"
Tumblr media
Tomorrow (May 2) I’ll be in Portland at the Cedar Hills Powell’s with Andy Baio for my new novel, Red Team Blues.
Tumblr media
In theory, patents are for novel, useful inventions that aren’t obvious “to a skilled practitioner of the art.” But as computers ate our society, grifters began to receive patents for “doing something we’ve done for centuries…with a computer.” “With a computer”: those three words had the power to cloud patent examiners’ minds.
If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/01/usury/#tech-exceptionalism
Patent trolls — who secure “with a computer” patents and then extract ransoms from people doing normal things on threat of a lawsuit — are an underappreciated form of “tech exceptionalism.” Normally, “tech exceptionalism” refers to bros who wave away things like privacy invasions by arguing that “with a computer” makes it all different.
These tech exceptionalists are the legit face of tech exceptionalism, the Forbes 30 Under 30 set. They’re grifters, but they’re celebrated grifters. There’s a whole bottom-feeding sludge of tech exceptionalists that don’t get the same kind of attention, like patent trolls.
Oh, and the fintech industry.
As Riley Quinn says, “when you hear ‘fintech,’ think: ‘unlicensed bank.’” The majority of fintech “innovation” consists of adding “with a computer” to highly regulated activities and declaring them to be unregulated (and, in the case of crypto, unregulatable).
There are a lot of heavily regulated financial activities, like dealing in securities (something the crypto industry is definitely doing and claims it isn’t). Most people don’t buy or sell securities regularly — indeed, most Americans own little or no stocks.
But you know what regulated financial activity a lot of Americans participate in?
Going into debt.
As wages stagnate and the price of housing, medical care, childcare, transportation and education soar, Americans fund their consumption with debt. Trillions of dollars’ worth of debt. Many of us are privileged to borrow money by walking into a bank and asking for a loan, but millions of Americans are denied that genteel experience.
Instead, working Americans increasingly rely on payday lenders and other usurers who charge sky-high interest rates, on top of penalties and fees, trapping borrowers in an endless cycle of indebtedness. This is an historical sign of a civilization in decline: productive workers require loans to engage in useful activities. Normally, the activity pans out — the crop comes in, say — and the debt is repaid.
But eventually, you’ll get a bad beat. The crop fails, the workshop burns down, a pandemic shuts down production. Instead of paying off your debt, you have to roll it over. Now, you’re in an even worse situation, and the next time you catch a bad break, you go further into debt. Over time, all production comes under the control of creditors.
The historical answer to this is jubilee: a regular wiping-away of all debt. While this was often dressed up in moral language, there was an absolutely practical rationale for it. Without jubilee, eventually, all the farmers stop growing food so that they can grow ornamental flowers for their creditors’ tables. Then, as starvation sets in, civilization collapses:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/07/08/jubilant/#construire-des-passerelles
As the debt historian Michael Hudson says, “Debts that can’t be paid, won’t be paid.” Without jubilee, indebtedness becomes a chronic and inescapable condition. As more and more creditors attach their claims to debtors’ assets, they have to compete with one another to terrorize the debtor into paying them off, first. One creditor might threaten to garnish your paycheck. Another, to repossess your car. Another, to evict you from your home. Another, to break your arm. Debts that can’t be paid, won’t be paid — but when you have a choice between a broken arm and stealing from your kid’s college fund or the cash-register, maybe the debt can be paid…a little. Of course, digital tools offer all kinds of exciting new tools for arm-breakers — immobilizing your car, say, or deleting the apps on your phone, starting with the ones you use most often:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/04/02/innovation-unlocks-markets/#digital-arm-breakers
Under Trump, payday lenders romped through America. A lobbyist for the payday lenders became a top Trump lawyer:
https://theintercept.com/2017/11/27/white-house-memo-justifying-cfpb-takeover-was-written-by-payday-lender-attorney/
This lobbyist then oversaw Trump’s appointment of a Consumer Finance Protection Bureau boss who deregulated payday lenders, opening the door to triple digit interest rates:
https://www.latimes.com/business/lazarus/la-fi-lazarus-cfpb-payday-lenders-20180119-story.html
To justify this, the payday loan industry found corruptible academics and paid them to write papers defending payday loans as “inclusive.” These papers were secretly co-authored by payday loan industry lobbyists:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2019/02/25/how-payday-lending-industry-insider-tilted-academic-research-its-favor/
Of course, Trump doesn’t read academic papers, so the payday lenders also moved their annual conference to a Trump resort, writing the President a check for $1m:
https://www.propublica.org/article/trump-inc-podcast-payday-lenders-spent-1-million-at-a-trump-resort-and-cashed-in
Biden plugged many of the cracks that Trump created in the firewalls that guard against predatory lenders. Most significantly, he moved Rohit Chopra from the FTC to the CFPB, where, as director, he has overseen a determined effort to rein in the sector. As the CFPB re-establishes regulation, the fintech industry has moved in to add “with a computer” to many regulated activities and so declare them beyond regulation.
One fintech “innovation” is the creation of a “direct to consumer Earned Wage Access” product. Earned Wage Access is just a fancy term for a program some employers offer whereby workers can get paid ahead of payday for the hours they’ve already worked. The direct-to-consumer EWA offers loans without verifying that the borrower has money coming in. Companies like Earnin claim that their faux EWA services are free, but in practice, everyone who uses the service pays for the “Lightning Speed” upsell.
Of course they do. Earnin charges sky-high interest rates and twists borrowers’ arms into leaving a “tip” for the service (yes, they expect you to tip your loan-shark!). Anyone desperate enough to pay triple-digit interest rates and tip the service for originating their loan is desperate and needs to the money now:
https://prospect.org/power/05-01-2023-fintech-ewa-payday-loan-scam/
EWA annual interest rates sit around 300%. The average EWA borrower uses the service two or three times every month. EWA CEOs and lobbyists claim that they’re banking the unbanked — but the reality is that they’re acting as sticky-fingered brokers between banks and young, poor workers, marking up traditional bank services.
This fact is rarely mentioned when EWA companies lobby state legislatures seeking to be exempted from usury rules that are supposed to curb predatory lenders. In Vermont, Earnin wants an exemption from the state’s 18% interest rate cap — remember, the true APR for EWA loans is about 300%.
In Texas, payday lenders are classed as loan brokers, not loan originators and are thus able to avoid the state’s usury caps. EWAs are lobbying the Texas legislature for further exemptions from state money-transmitter and usury limit laws, principally on the strength of the “it’s different: we do it with a computer” logic.
But as Jarod Facundo writes for The American Prospect, quoting Monica Burks from the Center for Responsible Lending, a loan is a loan even if it’s with a computer: “The industry is trying to create a new definition for what a loan is in order to exempt themselves from existing consumer protection laws… When you offer someone a portion of money on the promise that they will repay it, and often that repayment will be accompanied with fees or charges or interest, that’s what a loan is.”

Wait something funny just occurred to me. In the AU where the kids get cyber formed but remain on the edge of being adults, someone would have had to give them the Cybertonian version of The Sex Talk.
Would it be Ratchet, giving them the strictly medical side of things, or would it be some bot, talking about the experimental/exploring parts?
(I genuinely believe Ratchet would have an aneurysm of some kind at the prospect of it. But let's pretend)
I have to name this verse properly because Tarn isn't here, but it will eventually lead the D.J.D. to Earth. I'll keep the soulmate au tag until I can figure out something.
Ratchet does have an aneurysm because he has set ideas on what is and isn't 'appropriate' from Functionist-held Golden Age Cybertron, but he also carries a lot of guilt from out-surviving almost all his friends, cohorts, and students...
And it's all being dragged into the mud by the Jasper trio, who gives no quarter on crushing his prejudices and fears. Even Raf, his favorite, casually steamrolls over it with the draconian and American mindset of giving no fucks.
Team Prime had harmless thought exercises of what their charges' Cybertronian frames would be like... and none of them were remotely correct!
Because Miko is a Seeker femme, Raf may or may not be a type of Predacon, and Ratchet can't get proper readings on Jack's base-coding, Ratchet sits them all down because they're not sparklings or mechlings with sealed plates but full-framed mecha with total access. He gives them the reproductive talk, especially since Seekers and beastformers go into reproductive heats, but humans don't have that. He's trying to be mindful, and Ratchet is going through the different sexual methods and the variations of parts. Of course, Raf has to interrupt because the draconian mech has two spikes and no receptacle, and he would like to know about any necessary care.
All in all, it's really Ratchet having another fit because his weird humans are now weird Cybertronians of yore/throwbacks. And the ex-humans are taking it rather well, but Jack, Miko, and Raf had literally lifetimes to explore sexuality: as humans, human-hybirds by exploring their heritage as well as alchemical concoctions and very curious lovers.
This, however, did kickstart the path of Ratchet teaching Miko his medical knowledge as she doesn't want the results. She's burning to have the technical skills and knowledge of the processes. Ratchet does pass on his skills to Raf and Jack, but Raf prefers the science as Jack is more fascinated by procuring research material. Miko literally bullzoned her way to become his student. The howling matches they had shook the foundations of the base, but she got her way because she deliberately aimed at his vulnerable parts. ("You'll leave us one day to go back to Cybertron! And you're refusing to tell me how to properly care for myself!?") Ratchet is highly concerned about how voracious Miko's appetite is for that knowledge.
She yearns to become a Tsunade/Unohana terror among them because they have a strong suspicion that if their status is revealed, then they'll become targets. She'll become a Cybertronian Bloodbourne horror if it means she'll never be trapped like what happened to some of her kin.

Skip, Julie here. I worked for 43 years in fantastic jobs. Some as an employee, in HR, and in Senior Management. My employers were very well known Companies or Government. They had sick leave policies where employees from CEO to newest employee were entitled to medical leave and privacy of all medical information.
As a Manager I was aware of some very serious medical issues and we offorded those people complete privacy. Time to heal was dependent on their medical team despite how much they might have been needed in the workplace (perhaps being the only person with authority or highest level skill to deal with something vital).
A couple of these medical issues dealt with very serious surgery plus complications, and convalescence to deal with consequences of how their bodies or lives were changed and the mental processes they had to go through to understand and accept the changes.
Under no circumstances would I have ever thought it necessary to inform the other employees what was happening with the ill employee other than to update the return date. These people worked closely together but knew the value of allowing the one who was ill the time and space to fully recover. My contacting the employee for an update on whether they needed us was their choice to make, not mine or the company.
Princess of Wales is a senior member of a firm and a much loved member of a family. In her case she has a world wide family who care that she has been seriously ill and as family members we just want her to fully recover physically and mentally from her ordeal. We care and I think that says so much about how highly people around the world think of her.
As a senior member of the firm her bosses are aware of her illness and prognosis and have given her sick leave based on medical advice. I know the taxpayers of the UK keep up the mantra of BRF works for us, we pay them. Ok they are shareholders in the Company and they have an interest in ensuring the Company is providing the service they expect from it. The Company is BRF but no Company provides health information on senior employees except the CEO for obvious reasons. The company continues to operate even if a very important senior staff member is unwell.
My personal view is Catherine has been through a major abdominal surgery that has immediate and long term consequences for her. For HER, her husband and her 3 children. She does not owe any of us an explanation or an update. She loves her job and she does it brilliantly. She is totally loyal to King and Queen, her parents, siblings and the Commonwealth. She will never intentionally cause harm to her husbands family members.
People need to give her the same space we would all expect if we were seriously ill. I know people want to know what happened to her but really it is none of our business. Our role is to allow her time to fully heal so she can return to her role in the Company as soon as possible. No doubt she is already working behind the scenes.
I’m sorry this is long winded but I feel for her. 20 years of trying to please everyone yet when she needs some help people turn on her some will be because they are worried others for their own reasons. People need to send a private message of support but otherwise let her heal.
Princess of Wales, Catherine, God bless and keep you and your family fully protected and return you to full health We await your return, with patience, to your essential role for the Monarchy and we look forward to seeing you with your beautiful family vase soon as you feel you are fully recovered.
This is a lovely, thoughtful post Julie…no not too long.  I greatly appreciate the time and your experience you have shared with us.  I am quite proud of the fact that the people that come to this blog, are sensitive and caring and express nothing but support for Catherine and her family.  People are so concerned with “accountability “ these days….people are simply forgetting that behind the public life….is a real life going on, and people are dealing with all the same issues as everyone else.  The old “walk a mile in my shoes” comes to mind!  Thank YOU again Julie!🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Echoes of Duty (COD Sentinel AU) Worldbuilding
Echoes of Duty Masterlist
Tumblr media
In this Sentinel and Guide AU, the role of a Guide, when it comes to elite military units like the SAS, would make sense for a Guide to have some degree of military experience or training in order to handle the high-stress, tactical situations that the team faces. Here's how that works:
1. Combat-Ready Guide
Active Soldier: In this interpretation, the Guide would be a fully trained soldier, capable of handling themselves in combat alongside the Sentinels. Given the elite nature of the SAS, this Guide would likely be highly skilled in tactical operations, firearms, hand-to-hand combat, and military strategy. This makes them a valuable asset in missions, providing both sensory support to the Sentinels and combat effectiveness.
Specialized Role: The Guide might also have a specialized role within the unit, such as a medic or intelligence officer, which would complement their ability to provide mental and emotional support to the Sentinels. This dual role allows the Guide to contribute directly to missions while still focusing on their primary duties with the Sentinels.
2. Tactically Trained, Non-Combatant Guide
Support Role: Another possibility is that the Guide isn’t an active combatant but is still trained in military tactics, protocols, and basic self-defense. They would not be on the front lines like the Sentinels but would work in close proximity, offering guidance, mental support, and sensory management without necessarily engaging in combat themselves.
Field Medic or Analyst: The Guide might serve as a field medic or intelligence analyst. Their skills would be in keeping the Sentinels grounded and focused, ensuring that they can carry out missions effectively, while the Guide handles medical emergencies or provides real-time intel.
Crisis Management: In high-stakes scenarios, this type of Guide could be invaluable for keeping the team calm and functioning, even if they aren’t directly fighting.
3. Civilian Guide Embedded with the SAS
Non-Military Guide: In some cases, the Guide might not be a soldier at all but is embedded with the SAS due to their unique abilities. This could make for interesting dynamics, especially if the Guide is not accustomed to combat situations. The Sentinels would likely be highly protective of the Guide, ensuring their safety during dangerous operations, while the Guide focuses on helping manage the sensory aspects of the mission.
Highly Skilled in Guide Abilities: Despite not being a soldier, this Guide would need to be exceptionally skilled in their abilities to justify their presence in such a dangerous environment. They might act as a calming presence, helping the Sentinels recover from sensory overload or emotional distress, even in the heat of battle.
Reluctant Soldier: In some stories, the civilian Guide might be forced to learn how to handle themselves in combat, either through training with the SAS or from being thrown into situations where they have no choice but to fight. This could lead to interesting character development as the Guide becomes more capable over time.
4. Elite Tactical Guide
Hybrid of Combatant and Guide: For a Guide working with the SAS, they could be portrayed as a hybrid between a soldier and a Guide. They would have the military training to survive and thrive in combat, but their primary role would be to serve the Sentinels’ sensory needs. This might include helping Sentinels maintain control during operations, ensuring they aren’t overwhelmed by sensory input, and offering emotional support during downtime or after traumatic events.
Bond Strength: Guides who work with elite Sentinels might have stronger bonds, allowing them to be more effective at keeping their Sentinels calm and grounded during high-intensity missions. This bond could even extend to providing physical support during combat, enhancing the teamwork between Guide and Sentinel.
5. A Guide Who Transitions into a Soldier
Progression: The Guide might initially not be a soldier but, due to circumstances or their bond with the Sentinels, undergo training to become a combatant over time. This would allow for character growth and development, as the Guide would need to learn how to balance their duties as a Guide with their increasing responsibilities as a soldier. The Sentinels might train them, leading to deeper relationships and more trust.
141 PRIMARY SENSES
In a Sentinel and Guide AU, each Sentinel typically has one heightened primary sense that stands out among the rest. Here's what each of the 141 members could have as their primary sense:
Captain John Price (Hearing) Price’s experience and leadership would lend themselves well to heightened hearing. He’d be able to pick up on conversations, footsteps, or distant sounds that others might miss, helping him plan and react with precision during missions. His acute sense of hearing could also help him detect subtle changes in tone or emotion when talking to others, making him a strong, empathetic leader.
Lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley (Sight) Ghost’s sharp sight would align with his role as a sniper and his ability to stay hyper-aware of his surroundings. Whether spotting enemies from long distances or noticing the smallest details in his environment, Ghost’s enhanced vision would make him a deadly force in the field, as well as a perceptive sentinel for danger.
Sergeant Kyle "Gaz" Garrick (Touch) Gaz’s primary sense could be touch, allowing him to notice subtle vibrations, changes in air pressure, or textures that others wouldn’t. This would make him incredibly effective at working with equipment, climbing, or detecting hidden threats, such as pressure-sensitive traps. His sense of touch would also make him an exceptional hand-to-hand combatant, feeling the flow of movement and reacting instinctively.
Sergeant John "Soap" MacTavish (Smell) Soap’s sense of smell could be his strongest asset, allowing him to detect explosives, chemical agents, or changes in the environment that would otherwise go unnoticed. His heightened olfactory sense could also help him track enemies or detect danger through subtle scents in the air, giving him an edge in both recon and combat situations.
LOCKED IN
In the context of a Sentinel and Guide AU, "getting locked in" refers to a Sentinel becoming overwhelmed by their heightened senses to the point where they lose control. Their senses become overstimulated and hyper-focused, making it difficult for them to function properly. It often happens in stressful situations where the Sentinel is bombarded by strong stimuli—whether it's a sound, smell, sight, or other sensory input—causing them to become "trapped" or "locked in" to one or more of their heightened senses.
When a Sentinel is locked in:
Overstimulation: The sensory input becomes so overwhelming that the Sentinel struggles to filter out irrelevant stimuli, focusing intensely on one sense or experiencing a barrage of sensations.
Loss of Focus: The Sentinel may become disoriented or unable to concentrate on anything but the overwhelming stimuli, losing awareness of their surroundings or their mission.
Physical or Emotional Strain: The strain of being overstimulated can lead to physical symptoms like headaches, nausea, or fatigue. Emotionally, the Sentinel might experience frustration, anger, or fear, further exacerbating their condition.
The Role of the Guide: The Guide plays a crucial role in helping a Sentinel break free from this state. By using their abilities to calm and focus the Sentinel, they can ground them, helping the Sentinel filter out excess stimuli and regain control.
In Soap's case from the previous scene, he was close to getting "locked in" due to his heightened sense of smell being overwhelmed by the scents of fear, sweat, and gun oil from the recruits. Y/n, as his Guide, stepped in to help him regain control by guiding him to focus on calming, familiar scents and using her presence to soothe him before he became fully locked in.
During a "locked-in" state in the Sentinel and Guide AU, a Sentinel becomes completely overwhelmed by their heightened senses, to the point where they lose control over their ability to filter stimuli. This can lead to several intense physical, mental, and emotional reactions. Here’s a breakdown of what typically happens:
1. Sensory Overload
Primary Sense Overwhelmed: The Sentinel’s strongest sense (like smell, hearing, etc.) becomes hyper-stimulated. For example, if a Sentinel's primary sense is hearing, they might hear every little noise as deafening, even the sound of their own heartbeat.
Inability to Filter: Normally, Sentinels can filter out irrelevant stimuli, but during a locked-in, that ability breaks down. Everything feels equally intense, whether it’s useful information or not.
Disorientation: The inability to focus on anything specific makes them feel disoriented or trapped in their senses. They can’t ground themselves or shut off the sensory overload.
2. Physical Symptoms
Headaches or Migraines: The overstimulation can cause intense headaches or migraines as the brain struggles to process the bombardment of information.
Nausea or Dizziness: Sensory overload can lead to feelings of dizziness or nausea, as the body becomes overwhelmed by the input.
Fatigue: The effort of managing heightened senses under normal circumstances is tiring, but when locked in, it becomes exhausting. This can lead to sudden fatigue or even collapse.
Physical Rigidity or Pain: The Sentinel may become physically tense or rigid, as their body tries to cope with the intense sensations.
3. Emotional and Mental Effects
Panic or Anxiety: The Sentinel may experience a sense of panic or anxiety as they feel trapped in their senses. Their inability to filter can make everything feel chaotic, triggering a fight-or-flight response.
Frustration or Anger: As the locked-in state persists, Sentinels may become frustrated or angry with themselves or their surroundings. They may lash out verbally or physically, struggling to regain control.
Shutting Down: Some Sentinels may mentally or emotionally shut down as a defense mechanism, becoming unresponsive or withdrawn as a way to cope with the overload.
Hyper-Focus or Dissociation: In some cases, a Sentinel might become hyper-focused on one sensory input (like a noise or smell) to the exclusion of everything else, dissociating from their surroundings.
4. Guide’s Role in Recovery
Calming Influence: A Guide can sense the Sentinel’s distress and use their abilities to help ground them. They may touch the Sentinel or use soothing verbal cues to help them focus on one calm, familiar stimulus, like their own heartbeat or scent.
Redirecting Attention: The Guide can help the Sentinel filter out overwhelming stimuli by redirecting their focus to a single, calming sensation—perhaps the Guide’s voice, touch, or smell.
Establishing a Mental Connection: In some instances, the Guide may need to establish a deeper mental or emotional connection, temporarily linking themselves to the Sentinel’s mind to help untangle the sensory overload.
Post-Lock-In Recovery: After the lock-in, the Sentinel may feel weak or drained, needing time to recover both physically and emotionally. The Guide continues to provide support during this period.
5. Post-Lock-In Vulnerability
Emotional Sensitivity: After a lock-in, Sentinels are often emotionally vulnerable and may seek comfort from their Guide, feeling ashamed or embarrassed about losing control.
Increased Bond Strength: Experiencing a locked-in state and being brought back by their Guide can deepen the bond between the Sentinel and Guide, as it reinforces trust and reliance on each other.
In summary, being locked in is a dangerous and overwhelming state for Sentinels, making them vulnerable and disoriented. A Guide’s presence is essential in pulling them out of it and helping them regain control.
In a Sentinel and Guide AU, it is often depicted that physical touch between a Guide and Sentinel greatly enhances the Guide's ability to calm and ground the Sentinel, particularly during moments of sensory overload or when a Sentinel is "locked in." However, touch is not always strictly necessary depending on the strength of the bond and the abilities of the Guide. Here's how it typically works:
FIXING A LOCK IN
1. Physical Touch
Immediate Grounding: Physical touch provides an immediate and powerful connection between a Guide and a Sentinel. It helps the Sentinel focus on the Guide's presence, allowing them to filter out the overwhelming stimuli.
Enhancing the Bond: Touch strengthens the emotional and mental bond, making it easier for the Guide to channel calming energies or direct the Sentinel’s focus.
Soothing Sensations: Touch itself can be soothing—holding a hand, brushing fingers along the skin, or resting a hand on the Sentinel’s back or shoulders—helping to calm overstimulated senses.
2. Proximity Without Touch
Verbal Cues: Even if they aren't touching, a Guide can often help a Sentinel through soothing words, focusing the Sentinel's attention on the sound of their voice, particularly if their bond is strong. This is especially effective if the Sentinel’s primary sense is hearing.
Strong Mental Bonds: For Sentinels and Guides with a deep, established bond, proximity may be enough to offer a calming influence. The Guide might use their emotional or mental connection to reach out to the Sentinel without needing to physically touch them.
Aura or Energy Projection: Some interpretations of the AU depict Guides as being able to project calming energy or influence from a short distance, especially if they are highly skilled. This can involve breathing techniques, body language, or mental projection, allowing the Sentinel to sense their Guide’s presence even without touch.
3. Remote Guidance (Distance)
Mental Connection: In rare cases or with highly trained Guides, it’s possible for the Guide to connect with their Sentinel mentally even when they are physically far apart. This usually happens if the bond between them is exceptionally strong or if the Guide has a particular skill in mental projection. This mental link allows the Guide to provide reassurance and calm even across distances.
Telepathic Influence: Some AU interpretations include telepathic abilities between Sentinels and Guides, allowing for a mental connection where touch is not needed at all. The Guide can calm the Sentinel through a mental link, communicating through thoughts or emotions.
4. Variability Based on Bond Strength
New Bonds: If the bond between the Sentinel and Guide is new or less developed, physical touch is often more necessary. The Sentinel may not respond as well to verbal cues or distant influence because the bond hasn’t fully solidified.
Established Bonds: In stronger or older bonds, the Guide may not need to rely on touch as much, as the Sentinel is more attuned to their Guide’s presence and can be calmed through proximity or mental/emotional guidance.
5. Touch During "Locked-In" States
Direct Touch is Critical: During a "locked-in" state, when a Sentinel is overwhelmed by their senses, physical touch is usually the most effective way to pull them out of it. The immediate grounding sensation helps break through the overload and refocus the Sentinel on something familiar and comforting.
Safety and Security: Touch also provides a sense of security and safety, particularly when the Sentinel is at their most vulnerable, giving them something tangible to hold onto as they regain control.
In summary, while physical touch is the most effective way for a Guide to help a Sentinel, it is not always necessary. Verbal communication, proximity, and mental connections can also be used depending on the bond’s strength and the Guide’s abilities. However, in extreme cases like sensory overload or being locked in, touch is usually the fastest and most reliable method for calming a Sentinel.
In a world where Sentinels and Guides exist, not everyone falls into these categories. Here’s how it works:
Sentinel and Guide AU World Structure
1. Sentinels:
Role: Sentinels are elite operatives with heightened sensory abilities who are often involved in high-stakes missions requiring their specialized skills.
Population: Generally, Sentinels are a smaller, specialized subset of the population due to the rarity of their heightened senses. They undergo rigorous training and selection processes to serve in this role.
2. Guides:
Role: Guides are individuals with the ability to stabilize and enhance the effectiveness of Sentinels through a unique bond. They play a critical role in maintaining operational stability and supporting Sentinels.
Population: Guides are also a specialized group, often fewer in number compared to the general population. Their abilities are rare and highly valued, making them critical to the success of Sentinel operations.
3. General Population:
Non-Sentinels and Non-Guides: The majority of the population would not possess heightened sensory abilities or the specific skills of a Guide. These individuals lead everyday lives without the specialized attributes of Sentinels and Guides.
Role: They may serve in various civilian, administrative, or support roles within society, but they do not have the specialized abilities or responsibilities associated with Sentinels and Guides.
4. Interactions Between Groups:
Integration: Sentinels and Guides work closely with the general population but maintain distinct roles and responsibilities. The general public may be aware of Sentinels and Guides but does not interact with them in the same way as those within the specialized circles.
Support: Guides and Sentinels may rely on the general population for logistical, operational, and support functions, while maintaining their own specialized roles.
Determining whether someone is a Sentinel or a Guide involves a combination of inherent traits, specialized tests, and recognition of abilities. Here’s how individuals discover their roles:
Discovery Process for Sentinels and Guides
1. Inherent Traits and Early Signs:
Sentinels: Individuals might exhibit heightened sensory abilities from a young age, such as enhanced hearing, smell, sight, touch, or taste. These traits can become more apparent through activities or situations that require acute sensory perception.
Guides: Guides often display a natural ability to support and stabilize others. They might show an intuitive understanding of others’ emotions or states, which helps them maintain balance and support those around them.
2. Specialized Testing:
Sentinels: To confirm Sentinel abilities, individuals undergo specialized sensory tests conducted by trained professionals. These tests assess the extent and precision of their heightened senses through various controlled stimuli and scenarios.
Guides: Testing for Guides focuses on their ability to bond and support Sentinels. This may involve simulations or assessments to determine their capacity for stabilizing and enhancing the effectiveness of those with heightened senses.
3. Training and Evaluation Programs:
Sentinels: Once identified, potential Sentinels are often put through rigorous training programs that further develop their sensory abilities and teach them how to apply these skills in operational contexts.
Guides: Those identified as Guides may enter training programs designed to refine their bonding abilities and enhance their support skills. They learn how to work effectively with Sentinels and understand the intricacies of the Guide-Sentinel relationship.
4. Recognition by Specialized Institutions:
Sentinels and Guides: Specialized institutions or agencies that handle Sentinels and Guides might conduct evaluations and provide certifications or recognitions. These organizations confirm an individual's role and provide further training and integration into their respective functions.
5. Mentorship and Pairing:
Sentinels: After confirmation, Sentinels are often paired with experienced Sentinels or Guides to mentor them and help them adapt to their role.
Guides: Guides are typically paired with Sentinels, either during the training phase or once they are operational, to establish and strengthen the Guide-Sentinel bond.
6. Self-Discovery and Community Support:
Sentinels: Individuals might self-identify as Sentinels if they notice their sensory abilities surpassing normal levels, especially if their skills align with the needs of high-stakes or specialized roles.
Guides: Potential Guides might recognize their role through their natural ability to support and stabilize others, and through feedback from peers or mentors who notice their aptitude for the Guide role.

@paradoxolotl wrote one of the cutest andreil fics, Necromancy for Children, and I love it because it makes Neil work at the place I currently work at! BAB, or Build a Bear Workshop.
However, because I work at BAB now, all I can think about (with the lovely @jtl-fics encouraging) an AFTG AU where the foxes are a team of Bear Builders. Wymack is the General Manager, Abby is the Assistant Manger, Dan, Allison, Renee, and Seth are all team leads (Matt is in training to become a lead as well they just need to hire more builders first) and the Monsters are the rest of the crew.
Kevin transfered in from the West Virginia branch to the south Carolina branch because he recently found out that Wymack is his dad but oh no, now his dad is his boss.
This is not Aaron's only job as he pushes himself through medical school. He also works at the cafe that everyone frequents because it's just a walk across the street away. Sometimes, he even comes into BAB smelling like coffee and pastries. He also has another job at a book store closer to the apartment he, Andrew, Nicky, and now Kevin all share. Now Kaitlyn also works at the cafe and the bookstore. However, she and Aaron met during their classes then found out later that they also worked together.
Andrew is just there for the kids. He doesn't express it, but he likes how the young kids light up when he's helping them build their new friends. Andrew is also working for his tuition but he's going to community College to improve his writing skills as he works on his manuscript.
Nicky once again is in the US for the twins. Adopting them as soon as he was able and working hard until they also started working. Nicky is the other person along Matt in the run to be a Team Lead. They just need more employees first.
Neil is a new hire that everyone is unsure of, besides Kevin. Kevin saw him interview at his old store then never saw him return even after his old Managers spoke highly of his interview. He's not inexperienced, though. He's worked at multiple BABs and knows the rules and standards by heart. The binders are his Bible. He'll read them for fun. Master of the Bonus Club captures and Bonus Gift Cards.
Matt is a relatively new hire that was hired on seasoned a year or two ago that just stayed after everyone else left. He and Seth got along immediately, which led Seth and Allison setting him up with Dan as a little double date senario. Renee and Matt used to work together at a local bookstore, but they were let go when the owner couldn't keep it running. Matt ended up working at a sports store, his unique knowledge of boxing coming in handy while Renee went into retail at a small clothing business catered to folks looking for stylish clothes that also followed religious modesty requirements.
Seth is the longest employee besides Wymack and Abby (they've been at this store sense it was first opened). He was, in fact, one of the first people Wymack and Abby hired after getting promoted. Seth, by experience, knows the rules and regulations by heart. He helped Allison, Renee, and Dan all learn the ropes.
Dan and Allison were both interviewed and hired and trained the same days. They quickly became bffs and Dan and Renee had a friendly competition when she was hired on. The girls have become so close they hang out outside if work frequently. Wymack and Abby learned to schedule them at least one day off that lines up.

this was js sm i had in my notes, figured id try and post it 🤷‍♀️
pairing: simon 'ghost' riley + medic!reader
Tumblr media
the feeling of having an animal's life in your hands was one you couldn't shake.
hunting made you uneasy. ending the beautiful pattern and cycle of another creature's life was something that would grow to eat away at your soul.
you were an impeccable opposite to most of the other people here.
now, that doesn't mean that the other's found pleasure in the act of killing- ending a life and simply moving on with your own.
many had simply grown numb to the feeling. but you knew that there were still a few that felt the same aching pain you did when you would imagine how easily a knife could cut through the delicate string that was life.
you'd seen it firsthand, too.
each of the lines on your palm had been soaked in the blood of another as you desperately grasped at every option to save this delicate string from snapping and shattering.
you knew a bullet to the heart was all it took for this to happen. but if it didn't, you wouldn't have a job.
you would heal rather than hurt. it filled the little gap in your body with something that felt like it could help the growing guilt you felt for every life you couldn't save. every family you indirectly broke.
in return, you grew to treasure the things you had now and not search for anything more than that. you were nurturing and warm, but yet so cold. no one could sneak in and make a place in your heart or your home or your bed. no one.
and just like that, you became a mystery.
you weren't scary or anything. not some looming mass of impending death and ill intent like other mysteries were. you were still kind and warm and everything a medic needed to be, but no one knew anything but that.
then you were hauled from your old post and thrown into the cesspool they called Task Force 141. your skill was highly recommended and appreciated by the captain--- Price, was it?
Garrick was the first of the group you let yourself attach to. he was easy to let yourself down with. with all his jokes and warm outer shell, he was a delightful man. easy to fall in love with too, if you wanted that. but you didn't.
each joke cracked your shell just a bit more.
Soap was next. despite the horribly ugly haircut and honestly repulsing stature, he was a good man and an even better friend.
then Price. he smelled of wood and cinnamon and it made your lips twitch up every time the smell filled your senses. his warm eyes and even warmer words to offer.
this group became your family. each and every one of them. each smile and each word that finally graced your lips was because of them.
it was like something had been opened and that little sliver of light slipped through and your team held it.
all except Ghost.
his eyes would never meet yours. never fully, at least. they would just burn behind that mask of his, simmering in their deadly and dark way. you had seen what he could do and had to deal with the aftermath of it.
but you had never dealt with him. he wouldn't let you heal him. he avoided you like you were the plague itself. but, why?
you had no fucking idea.
Soap would say it was because of how opposite the two of you were.
"the pair of you are like the sun and the fuckin' undertaker, i'm tellin' you." he would tell you. you merely shrugged in the way that you always did. (💀)
but he never stood beside you like the other's would. always in front of you, right there where he could see you.
he didn't think you fit in. not one bit.
like a deer in a pen of wolves. all eyes hoping to swallow you whole, all hands itching to touch what they can't. all of the sex-starved men dying to touch the newest doe in the woods.
you and your big pretty eyes...
you and your small demeanor and even smaller hands.
you and your pretty cheeks that would adorn the shadows of your eyelashes when the sun hit you right.
you.
and you were just a medic. many of the men would throw themselves in harms way or make up fake illnesses to see you. to feel you touch them as you would examine them.
it irked him. truly, it did.
because you were so goddamn fucking oblivious to it all. the way you willingly helped them and had no knowledge of the vile things they said about you in the halls and the barracks. (yikes.)
and you...
you left him be. you didn't press him, you didn't say anything to him without him talking to you first. you excepted the fact that he wanted nothing do with you.
...
it was getting warm again.
summer was creeping up around the corner, brushing her sweet fingers over the hills and across the forest rooftops, gifting the world with new lives. just like every spring did.
you creeped out from your room, your socks doing little to keep your skin from tingling against the cold flooring as you trudged into the main area. the team always packed in here on their days off.
after poking around with the coffee maker for a while, still unsuccessful at getting the coffee you needed, Price spoke up from his spot leaning against the counter.
"hey, ya' know that's broke, right?" he asked, his voice drawing a low groan of annoyance to slip from your lips.
"fucking really?"
"... yeah. Soap put water where the filter was meant to be." from their left, Soap let out a sharp gasp. "hey!" he tried, glaring back at Price. the older man tilted his head at the scott and shrugged.
"yeah. it was honestly pathetic to watch." that was a new voice.
you turned your head, feeling small in your sweater. you felt your own skin grow tight and this uncomfortable heat spread across your body. fuck.
your lieutenant walked in, mug in hand. he wasn't wearing his gear. no one was. they had a day off. a day of peace and normalcy, even if it was for a heartbeat.
your pulse thundered in your ears, the blood rushing through your body all at once as his cold eyes landed on you again. your eyes met his dead brown ones and you swear to whatever god is up there that his jaw twitched under his mask.
"oh fuck off, LT." was Soap's response. but his voice barely registered in your mind.
he didn't wear the skull mask this morning. only the balaclava. meaning; his upper half of his face was visible. but, of course, he wore that dreaded black hoodie and his sweatpants.
at least it wasn't his gear...
but he looked... human. and it hit something inside of you. "morning." your voice was small as it rasped out from your lips. his only response was a small nod, then he moved over to sit down across from Gaz.
"coffee?" Garrick asked, nodding towards the mug in Ghost's hand. the bigger man shook his head in response, his leg bouncing ever so slightly. "tea."
"of course." Soap scoffed from the other room. "you bloody brit's and your tea." you swallowed back a smile as all three of the other men groaned in annoyance.
"surprised you're not wearing a kilt, Johnny." Ghost sneered back, raising his eyebrows. Garrick snickered, taking a bite of his bagel. you let a soft laugh pass through your lips, the sound bubbling up like sweet honey as it filled the still air.
eyes.
there were those eyes again- burning into your skull and burrowing in your chest to heat your whole body.
you had laughed- at his joke. why did that make his pulse jump? it was a foreign and forgotten feeling under his cold skin.
then the eyes were gone. back on his tea and anything else but you. the fragile thing that you wear... hardly any muscle on your little body. only a pretty face and big, round eyes that anyone would say yes to if you pleaded with them.
it was as if you had no idea what you were.
and maybe you didn't.
but he sure did.
"leave him be, LT." Price said, waving a hand. "yeah, casper." you muttered, finding the strength to meet Ghost's eyes with your own. it was as if the world started to crumble under you, your body aching and burning and humming with your pulse.
"leave him be."
Ghost paused, his cheek twitching slightly.
"who the fuck is Casper?"
your brows furrowed slightly, head tilting like a deer's would when they heard something deep in the woods. "wha- who's casper?" you asked, a hand on your hip.
"Casper. the ghost? it's a movie, man."
"yeah.. not ringin' a bell, love."
even he noticed his slip. love. your skin went cold, then burst into flame all at once. your face felt hot and you felt the heat pound between your legs.
love.
love.
love.
love.
lov-
"you there, doc?" Soap's voice chirped in with its usual mocking tone. you swallowed thickly, trying to rid your mind of every thought the darkest corner of your brain churned up.
you straightened your lips into a tight line, hoping no one noticed the thoughts swimming through your brain.
Ghost shifted his hips up, his eyes half-lidded and dark as he pulled the mug to his lips as he pulled back his mask to drink.
his lips. oh my fucking god-
for a white guy, they weren't bad. there was a jagged scar that ran down one of them... the top one. a soft cupid's bow, the bottom was a bit bigger than the top.
imagine them running over your skin, leaving love marks to bloom across your skin like sweet memories... imagine them over your own, or over your jaw or your neck... or down your sternum---
you were staring, weren't you?
oh, yeah. yeah you were.
"doc?" Price's voice. "you catchin' somethin'?" he had asked. but you barely heard him as you tried to calm your breathing and tear your eyes away from the poor lieutenant.
"yeah i um... i jus' don't feel too hot. can i.. uh.. i'll just be-" you looked back at your room. "back. back there."
oh what the fuck was that, man?
perfect save, really. you fucking nailed that one.
a flurry of yeah's and okay's hummed out from their lips, a few worried glances passing your own.
when you were hidden behind your door again, the heat grew and grew and simmered and stayed there. it lingered and festered just as the memory of his lips and his eyes did.
and that was only the first 'incident.'
