The morning before the wedding Angel sits in Hank’s tattoo chair and sets his palm on the armrest. The design of the ring is already stencilled onto his finger, the indigo outline ready to be inked upon his skin.

Engagement rings headcanons

Was scrolling through the engagement rings with my friendo the other day, and they dared me to choose individual rings for everyone in mm, so here's the result of that silly dare. I know we technically already know about this from the 'mysterious confesson' merch we got, but this was still a very fun exercise to do. These are just my headcanons, and were made solely for fun, don't take my thoughts on this too seriously! :D

Yoosung

Would go with something classy and romantic, probably a bit of vintage, too. He wants your engagement ring to reflect his love for you, which may lead him to become antsy and indecisive when picking one. He doesn't want it to be too expensive, or too cheap. It has to be just right. Poor guy even sketches out a clumsy 'prototype' he shows to the employees, as it's hard to relay his vision across with just words. In the end, he ends up either getting either a classic diamond ring with an infinity band (he thinks it's sweet to include a small detail of your appreciation to each other lasting forever, however cheesy that may sound) or something a bit more vintage and intricate in style. I don't think he would have any preferences concerning the color of metal, so he might go with a mix of white and yellow metal.

Zen

Would definitely go over the top - the man's a true romantic, you can't tell me he hasn't dreamed of his wedding at least a couple of times! He appreciates everything you've done for him, and he wants this ring to show it. He wants this ring to be everything you've ever dreamed of and so much more. Might struggle with high expectations he sets up for himself, which results in him just stressing himself out instead of enjoying the process like he's supposed to. You might have to have a talk with him about that. As for the ring itself, I think he'll go with something pink and soft in color! There's just something that's is so sweet and light whenever he looks at rose gold engagement rings, it makes him instantly think about you. That's when he knows it's the one. After all, pink is the color of romance!

Jaehee

Would get something custom-made, but still pretty traditional. She wants something that would catch your attention, but won't be an inconvenience to wear. She wouldn't stress out too much, and you two would probably agree on a design together, instead of her surprising you with something. You are her partner, and she wants your rings to reflect that. A delicate and easy design is her go-to. But, if you want something eye-catching, that's okay too, as long as it's not a bother to wear. I think she would go with platinum options when it comes to color. It's simple but very pretty to look at. Kind of like you :) She would also like to add custom engravings to your rings. Something to look at and smile as she twirls the ring around her finger. Either a cheesy coordinated phrase (probably out of your favorite musical that you two always quote to each other), or a date of your cafe's opening, as it's the start of her new life that she has managed to achieve thanks to your support.

Jumin

Would get something fancy, but not over the top. He desires fir your ring to not be too simple, as you are worth more than that. Still, he focuses more on the spiritual meaning of the ring rather than its cost. Money's not an issue to him either way, and he knows that you don't care about how expensive this ring will be. Regardless, he wants only the best for you, as you rightfully deserve. Jumin would go for traditional classic designs, as he finds them the most flattering to look at. Might also like boho-styled engagement rings. When it comes to the process of picking one, he won't overthink it too much. He wants the ring to be perfect, no doubt, but he's pretty cool-headed with his search. Might ask Elizabeth to pick out the best design if he's conflicted. With her intricate collection of collars, he knows she has a good sense of elegance. Would probably go for yellow gold variety when it comes to color, as it's the most classy one in his eyes.

Saeyoung

Would go with something simplistic but unique. I am like 70% sure he would create your engagement rings and wedding bands by hand. It just sounds like something Saeyoung would do. Poor guy would probably be the most stressed of all the others. He wants it to be perfect so badly, but he's also indecisive as hell. See, he's mostly non-traditional when it comes to his tastes, but he also really likes the classic styles of rings, not to mention that the idea of a classic traditional wedding makes him feel all emotional on the inside. This issue would probably persist throughout your entire wedding planning, and not just the creation of your engagement rings: he just can't decide which side to take for the life of him. In the end, he'll probably find the middle ground thanks to your help and encouragement. He's gonna let out the biggest sigh of relief once those rings are finally done. And probably cry right after, as he has never thought he would hold anything as precious as an engagement ring meant for his soulmate in his own hands. Would go with white gold for color.

Jihyun

Would go for something custom-made and simple, but still a bit unique in its presentation. I don't think he has much preference when it comes to style, so he's fine with anything you pick. He doesn't want it to be too ostentatious or expensive, however. He strikes me as someone who prefers more modest designs, even if he'd like to sprinkle some custom design choices. It'll depend on your relationship with him, and what makes it unique for you. He wants your rings to reflect that, more than anything else. He wouldn't be anxious while working on the design itself, occasionally asking for your input, as he wants these rings to be the representation of your shared love, not just his own. He might go a bit overboard and come up with a borderline silly-looking design initially, so it'd be best for you to keep him from getting too creative. Can't fault the man for getting carried away. He would probably go for yellow metal, as it reminds him of the sun.

GE Saeran

Would go for something simple, romantic, and vintage-styled. Saeran doesn't know much about the intricacies that go into picking out an engagement ring, so I can imagine he'd get pretty overwhelmed the first time he tries to research the topic on his own. You'll probably end up picking it out together, patiently discussing important details between yourselves. He knows he doesn't want it to be too fancy or eye-catching, and he knows he wants the ring to remind him of your smile whenever he looks at it. His criteria is pretty easy but sweet nonetheless. It's less about the details and more about his inner feelings. He would probably go for a floral-themed ring if he comes across one that catches his eye, but it's not definitive. He would also go for a colored gemstone, mostly because he likes it better that way. He loves the color pink, as it reminds him of the feeling your gentle love, so he will have a preference for rose gold rings, not doubt.

SE Saeran

Would go for something both unique but elegant. Now, Saeran is definitely not picky when it comes to engagement rings. He kind of feels out of his depth here. Still, it is very important to ask for his input and offer for him to pick out some options he likes, even just on a whim. You two will take your time during this process, as there is no need to rush, and he will get overwhelmed from time to time. It's best to take it one small step at a time, not rushing into anything too quickly. He needs to be reminded that he has nothing to worry about, as all that truly matters is your bond with one another. Saeyoung will probably be the one to make your engagement rings for you, as well as your wedding bands. Partially to not stress Saeran too much with all the shopping, as jewelry stores tend to be too bright for the eyes. It'll be a pretty unique and somewhat edgy design but with a touch of soft colors in the mix. Kind of like him. 

Rika

Is the type to go over the top but, in reality, she would like something classic and simple. When she's in a good place both physically and mentally, she's very doting, and she's also a hopeless romantic. I'd say she's almost on par with Zen when it comes to her romantic fantasies, which is why she loves his musicals as much as she does. It can be a good thing, but it also makes her prone to perfectionism. Weirdly enough? Despite their seemingly simplistic nature, I think they would go for something very unique and even a little odd-looking. Vanderwood is a pretty laid-back person, but all these casual vibes go out the window once it comes down to design. They are very picky with anything that they own in their closet, and engagement rings are on another level completely. They wear leopard print for a reason! I think they would end up getting something custom-made, as it's the easiest way not to stress out over the perfect design. They are not so much nervous as they are choosy. Still, they do have a major soft spot for you, so it's up to you to stir them in the right direction. They would like you to be very involved in the process of deciding on a perfect engagement ring. The end result will still be weird, though. But, the amount of weirdness will depend solely on you. Whether to embrace the weirdness, or to add just a touch of it - it is your choice to make.

After that is done you tell them to make his group ring a few sizes bigger than the original and to increase the radius within the infinity sign where the Dimond is set in one of its loops

You'd rather say he'd just have both his wedding rings together as one on his finger

Your diamond won't protrude but it would sit as though he'd had the original ring have 2 diamonds instead

The only difference being the tint your diamond had. You'd had the diamond cut into to engrave your initials into it with a drop of your blood and then stitched up like some pouch of a pact with the devil he'd made.

To get a natural diamond cut and re-harvested in a lab cost you good and if at all the love you had for him was any less you wouldn't have done it

Tears trickle down your cheeks as you look at him. He's frozen, as he blinks his tears away.

You're bawling your eyes and so is he. He pulls you in for a quick kiss before letting out his finger for you to put his ring on him as you follow to do the same. You recognize the tinted Dimond and look up to him in disbelief.

Pearl has a suit dress combination, a short, fluffy white wedding skirt with a pristine white blazer with teal accents. she has a teal tie on as well

Marina has a form fitting, shimmery, white dress that reaches the ground and has a high slit by her leg for mobility. It has really delicate, thin straps made of lace or beads, they're really just there for show instead of support but the beads have hints of pink in them

They have the most mushy and from the heart vows ever, Marina saying that Pearl saved her, gave her hope that inkopolis would be a home for her and she fell in love with the kindest most beautiful person ever. Pearl saying how Marina changed her, how she made her evaluate her actions and life choices and became such a better person because of her influence, and there was nobody she’d rather spend the rest of her life with than Marina. 

They have the most gorgeous wedding ring sets, Marina has a round blue sapphire with diamonds around the band of the ring, and a wedding band that fits over the ring to make it look like an infinity symbol. Pearl has a square (but its tilted on its side so its a diamond shape) pink diamond surrounded by smaller white diamonds, and a wedding band that points in the middle making the set look like a crown <3 

Pearl’s dad absolutely cries during their first dance, hes so proud of his daughter and he also gives Marina a dance because she doesn’t have family that she can do that with ;-; that makes Marina cry 

Pearl and Marina’s first dance is so emotional and they have a beautiful dance routine they practiced, a simple ballroom dance with lots of twirling and Marina dipping Pearl and kissing her. Everyone is just so happy for them and the two of them are so excited to spend the rest of their lives together

Their honeymoon is in like a tropical forest/island environment, somewhere they’re kind of secluded in a beautiful nature setting and can chill and relax as wives without worrying about being off the hook

“What do you know of the gods, Adonis?” 

A gentle wind whistled through the berry-scented air, pulling delicate leaves from the gnarled twigs they grew from. Each fluttered through the sky like feathers in the breeze, and then slipped from their branch-woven balcony, disappearing into the mist below. 

A table and two chairs were planted on this balcony, planted being a literal term. Flowers wound around wooden legs, and the bumpy bark-covered table had perfect indents to hold glasses of wine. 

Adonis ran his fingers over the crystal-encrusted hilt of his sword, humming to himself. “I know much,” he said. “But who doesn’t?” 

There was not a being in this world that did not believe in the gods, and how could there be? Mankind would not exist with no creator, and their magic-wielding followers were further proof of the divine. 

Silent, the storyteller took a moment to ponder, and Adonis took the moment to sip at his brimming cup of wine, finding it oddly tongue-tingling and sweet. It was far from what he was used to. 

The storyteller’s lips parted once more. “What do you think of the gods, Adonis?” he finally asked. 

As he lowered his wine, Adonis quirked an eyebrow, though still ran his other thumb over the most starlike of the sword’s jewels, tracing a beloved constellation. “What I think of them, sir?” 

“Yes, Adonis. What do you think of them?” 

Adonis found himself pausing, as pensive as his mentor. “I think... they’re more forces of nature than anything. They aren’t something to praise or to battle or to scorn, more... something to live amongst. I respect my god, of course, but I don’t consider him to be anything more than an equal. My equal.” 

A chuckle slipped from the storyteller’s lips, especially as he lifted his own mug of dark wine, taking a long, slow sip. “And who taught you that particular mindset, Adonis?” 

“I taught myself. Is there something wrong with it?” 

“Not at all.” The storyteller took another sip of his dark wine, staining his lips like a bruise. “But I have a tale of sorts that just might change your mind, Adonis, if it doesn’t confirm your every belief.” 

“What kind of tale?” 

The storyteller hummed a low, deep tune. “A belief, something rooted in both mythology and fact. But I won’t criticise you if you choose to believe in every part of it, nor if you refute it all.” 

Adonis laughed lightly, and sat back in his wooden chair, adjusting the sheath at his hip. “And do you know if it’s true, sir?” 

“No,” said the storyteller in a tone that spoke of finality. “I don’t.” 

“Then I’ll gladly uncover this great mystery with you.” Adonis crossed one leg over the other, taking on a posture that was a little more relaxed. His hands were far from his sheath. “Go on.” 

A moment passed. Two. Three. 

The storyteller placed both hands onto the table, interlocking his scarred fingers in a manner that brought great attention to them. For a moment, Adonis could focus on nothing else at all. 

It looked as if several rings had once donned those dark fingers, but that all of them had been violently stolen away. 

Had the storyteller once been wed? More than once, even? 

“Many men say that the first creation of the gods was not the land, nor the air, nor the fire in their hearths,” said the storyteller, speaking as if to the sky, “but the water that stretches into infinity and cradles every island of Ungode, like a mother embracing her dear womb.” 

Adonis nodded slowly, and said not a thing. 

“Those who say this,” the storyteller continued, in that same slow, pensive tone, “are incorrect, though the foolish believe them to know all. Those folk think far too literally.” 

“And you don’t?” 

The storyteller’s wine-stained lips quirked, though only a little. He leant in, just slightly, holding Adonis’s gaze. “I’ve always been better at seeing the bigger picture than most, seeing magic over matter. My god doesn’t bless those who don’t deserve these gifts, after all.” 

Adonis’s tongue darted to wet dry lips, before he realised he still had his cup of wine. Raising it to his tongue, he took a hearty sip. 

“You cannot begin with only the physical, Adonis. You cannot begin with the land and the sea and the sky.” 

As Adonis lowered his half-empty cup onto the table, he half-smiled at the man sat opposite him. “How could they begin with anything but the physical, sir? We need earth below our boots, after all.” The irony of this statement emerging from his lips in a kingdom of Air did not escape Adonis’s notice. 

“What would be the point to a flourishing forest without a single beast? Would be the point to a city without any human to fill its homes? What would be the point to a physical world with nothing alive lurking inside? The living aren’t the physical, after all.” 

Adonis’s brow furrowed, but he had nothing left to say, nothing but questions he was sure were about to be answered, or ignored no matter how much he pestered.  

He simply listened without another thought in his mind. 

“The gods did not make land first, and then the soul, Adonis. The gods made land for the soul, for mankind in its entirety.” 

Another moment passed. Two. Three. 

Even the wind was silent, though in this kingdom of Air, it was usually as plentiful as a heartbeat. Not a thing kept Adonis from listening to his mentor. His mentor he still hardly knew. 

The storyteller finally leant in. “Do you think man worships the gods, or do you think the gods worship man?”

WandaVision (We Don't Need Another Superhero Roundtable)

How do structural mythology, cultural studies, and cultural history reflect the series’ world and world-building around superheroes?

In Avengers: Infinity War, Vision dies twice. In WandaVision it is revealed that in her grief, Wanda created a town and created a new version of Vision that can only exist within the town, even though he had died. The theme of resurrection from the dead is a popular theme in mythology. As one example, the phoenix, according to legend, is a bird with the ability to die and come back to life. It is said that when an old phoenix dies, it bursts into flames and a new phoenix is born from the ashes of the old. There are many different versions of this resurrection myth in Egypt, Europe and Asia.

WandaVision is steeped in cultural studies and cultural history. The world of WandaVision is set as a television show, so it is a television show within a show. Kevin Williams writes, “A cultural history adds the element of time to the study of the narrative’s values, namely how is the change in values over time reflected in the narrative?” WandaVision tackles cultural history by setting each of the episodes in a different time period. The first episode takes place in the 50s. Wanda and Vision are dressed and styled in 50s clothing and their home has the technology associated with the 50s and 50s-style furniture. The episode is shot in black and white like a 50s TV show. Wanda is portrayed as a typical 50s housewife and Vision is a 50s house husband with a job. The first episode they try to blend in with the 50s-style town, including at a dinner with Vision’s boss, even though they don’t have key knowledge. After interrogating Wanda and Vision, Mr. Hart chokes on his food and Vision uses his powers to save him. 

In the second episode, WandaVision is transformed to a 60s setting. The show is still in black and white, but some strange items occur in color. At the end, Wanda learns she’s pregnant, she resets their reality and the show turns to color.

The third episode takes place in a 1970s setting and is in color as they prepare for the baby. The show keeps advancing through decades the 80s, 90s, 2000s until the last two episodes of the season when it breaks out of the television show model and focuses on Wanda’s real powers. The entire series is very much steeped in cultural aesthetics of the different decades as their clothing and styling change with each decade. The furniture in their home also changes with each style. Wanda and Vision attempt to blend in to each of the decades since the 50s without attracting attention even though they obviously have great powers that they can’t completely control. 

In what ways are the superheroes and their abilities informed by their racial, gender, sexual, and cultural identities?

Wanda’s gender identity as a woman plays an important role in her story. Ethnically, Wanda comes from Sokovia, a war-torn area that is likely modeled after Eastern Europe, possibly Yugoslavia. Her parents were killed when she was 10 and she was found by the SWORD people.  

In episode 1, Wanda and her neighbor Agnes discuss techniques for seducing a man. When Vision’s boss arrives, Wanda makes a very romantic atmosphere and dresses in a fluffy white dress that is meant to seduce Vision. At the end of the episode, Wanda makes wedding rings for her and Vision. In this episode, Wanda’s role as a woman and romantic partner take center stage. 

At the beginning of episode 2, after hearing thudding coming from outside, Wanda brings her and Vision’s beds closer together and then turns them into one bed. Vision tells Wanda to turn off the light, again focusing on Wanda as a romantic partner to Vision.

In episode 3, Wanda is pregnant. There seems to be a connection between the baby and her super powers. When Wanda is making the nursery, she feels the baby kicking and then loses control of her powers. Her progress moves up to six months. Vision says at the rate she’s going, they can expect the baby by Friday afternoon. When Wanda feels a tightening sensation, Vision says she’s experiencing Braxton-Hicks contractions. Her powers go haywire and there’s a town-wide blackout. Wanda wonders what will happen when the real contractions start. She wonders if the neighbors know that what’s going on is her fault. She says that people are always on the verge of discovering her secret. When Wanda has a real contraction, it begins to rain in the town. When Geraldine helps Wanda with her birth, electrical appliances turn themselves on, a chandelier crashes, pictures start spinning on the wall, and the fireplace ignites.  After she gives birth, everything calms down.The show sets up a possible tension between her motherhood and her super powers, but after giving birth, she retains her powers and ultimately her children have super powers too.

More broadly, Wanda’s desire to live an idyllic life with Vision is the basis for the show. But in her determination to create this life, she is giving new identities to the people of Westview. They become characters on Wanda’s TV show and know no other lives. She in essence keeps the people of the town hostage. This relates to her identity as a woman because she is portrayed as a woman so intent on having a perfect family life with her husband and children that she will destroy the lives of others to achieve it.  Wanda’s pursuit of her agenda at the expense of others is consistent with the observation by Kevin D. Williams that “As the questioning of American values and dissension within America concerning the War grew, so did the questioning of the superhero character. No longer was the superhero guaranteed to be an authoritarian do-gooder questioning nothing and blindly carrying out the crusade for American justice” (1336). Indeed, Wanda is a complex character who uses her powers for her own benefit not only to benefit others and even at the expense of others.

In what ways do costumes and concealing identities further separate the superheroes from normal society? How necessary is it for the superheroes to hide their true identities to successfully achieve their goals?

Wanda and Vision concealing their identities separates them from normal society because they have to go out of their way to make sure their neighbors don’t know what powers they have. WandaVision is consistent with Kevin D. Williams’ article “(R)Evolution of the Television Superhero: Comparing Superfriends and Justice League in Terms of Foreign Relations” when he writes, “Yet, in both series, heroes consciously struggle to maintain these secret identities, and they engage in deceit in order to keep the general public from learning their superhero status.” Wand and Vision don’t have to hide their powers when they’re alone, but in order to conceal the fact that she is a superhero who has taken over the town, without arousing suspicion from the townspeople, it is important for Wanda to conceal her and Visions’ identities.

In episode 1, when he’s at work, Vision’s boss says he’s like a computer and Vision says he’s made of organic matter. His boss then asks if there’s a skeleton in Vision’s closet. Later in the episode, Mrs. Hart almost discovers Wanda’s powers so Vision sings to distract her.

At a neighborhood watch meeting in episode 2, after being offered a danish, Vision says that he doesn’t eat food, receiving strange looks from the other characters present. To cover up his gaffe, Vision says he doesn’t eat food in between meals but at mealtimes.

In episode 3, Wanda tries to hide her pregnancy from Geraldine who arrives spontaneously. Wanda says it’s not a good time. Geraldine says she needs a bucket because her pipes burst. Wanda says she has a bucket in her kitchen. When Wanda wants to know more about Geraldine’s temp job, Geraldine goes on and on. A stork appears in the background. Wanda tries to make it disappear but her powers aren’t working. When Geraldine comments on the noise that the stork is making, Wanda says it’s her new icemaker. 

In episode 5, Agnes shows up at Wanda’s door spontaneously. Vision has to quickly make himself look human because he wasn’t expecting her. Later in the episode, after Wanda tells the twins that taking care of a dog is a huge responsibility, Vision shows up. He looks human. He says he had a hunch someone would pop over. This is when Agnes shows up with a wooden house for the dog, and Vision continues his speech with “with exactly the item we require.” Wanda uses her magic to create a dog collar in front of Agnes. Vision doesn’t understand why. Wanda says that Agnes didn’t notice when the twins aged up from babies to five-year-olds. Vision says it’s not what they agreed upon. He says that Wanda made no effort to conceal her abilities. Wanda says she’s tired of hiding and that Vision doesn’t have to either.

Kevin Williams also writes that Justice League gives an opposing interpretation: the costume is the real character and a secret identity is the false secondary identity. This is true in the case of Wanda, who invented fake personas for her, Vision, and everyone in Westview. She pretends she doesn’t know her true powers, but she actually does, which is seen in episode 3, when she ejects Monica Rambeau out of the town and back into the real world using her powers and then fixes up the damage. 

This quote can also be applied to the character of Agnes, who seems to just be Wanda’s neighbor and oblivious to Wanda’s power, but who later reveals herself to be a witch named Agatha Harkness at the end of episode 7. She was concealing her true identity and was just biding time before she revealed herself.

How do the economic, political, and social events that occurred during the series’ creation and broadcast cultivate and inform the superheroes’ decisions and actions? 

Production of WandaVision began in 2019. During this year, Brexit occurred, President Trump was impeached, evidence for global warming became more clear as the Amazon rainforest burned an area the size of New Jersey, and protestors were in the streets in Hong Kong. Against this backdrop of national and global turmoil, the focus of WandaVision on a seemingly simpler, nostalgic past of sitcoms can be understood as an approach to escape from the threats of reality. During production, a new threat to civilization, the pandemic occurred. Production had to be halted in 2020 for the pandemic. It was completed later that year and WandaVision became one of the few shows that aired in 2021, the height of the pandemic. The longing for escapism through sitcoms and television during the pandemic may well have contributed to the success of the television show. Wanda keeping everyone in a contained bubble could have been an allusion to people having to isolate themselves during the pandemic. Further, the attention paid to TV sitcoms is on the one hand comforting and nostalgic. But the show captures the emotions of the pandemic-stricken world because it upended the calming notion of an unthreatening sitcom and instead turned it slowly but steadily into a scarier and creepier show with each episode nudging in the direction of sitcom turning to horror, similar to life in a pandemic.

How do the superheroes question themselves, each other, and their obligations and duties to the people around them? 

In episode 8, Wanda and Agatha question each other. Agatha begs Wanda to reveal how she created the Hex and has Wanda revisit traumatic times from her life. When Wanda reveals how she created the town, Agatha says she knows what Wanda is. Agatha says that Wanda used chaos magic to create the town and that makes her the Scarlet Witch.

In episode 9, Agatha wants Wanda to surrender her power to her. Agatha says she’ll let Wanda “keep this pathetic little corner of the world all to herself.” Wanda throws her car into Agatha’s house. This is when the new Vision shows up. He lifts Wanda into the air and squeezes her head and says he was told that she was powerful, indicating that he believes that to be false. This is when the real Vision appears and throws the new Vision, which causes an explosion. Wanda says she should’ve told Vision everything the moment she realized what she had done. Vision says he understands why she made the world, but shows concern about it. Wanda says she can fix it. Vision seems doubtful. The new Vision emerges from the flames. Wanda tells Vision that Westview is their home and he says they will fight for it. When Vision and the new Vision fight again, Vision asks why Vision 2 is bent on destroying him. Vision 2 says that Wanda must be neutralized and Vision must be destroyed, and punches Vision in the head. Later, when Wanda is in the street, Agatha sends out a purple blast. She says that Wanda has never been up against another witch before. She says there’s an entire chapter devoted to Wanda in the Darkhold, which is the Book of the Damned. She says that the Scarlet Witch is not born, she is forged. She has no coven and no need for incantation. Wanda says that she’s not a witch, that she doesn’t cast spells, and that no one taught her magic. Agatha says that Wanda’s power exceeds that of the Sorcerer Supreme. She says it’s Wanda’s destiny to destroy the world. Wanda says she’s not what Agatha says she is.

Soon after this, Agatha cuts off Wanda’s control of the townsfolk. Wanda tells the townsfolk that they’re going to be fine, that she’s kept them safe. The townsfolk say that they feel her pain. Wanda lets out a scream, and accidentally starts choking the townsfolk. After stopping it, Wanda says she’ll let the people go. Agatha asks what’s stopping her. She tells Wanda to let the people go now and that heroes don’t torture people. Wanda sends up a beacon that is changing the town back to the way it was before she changed things. She tells everyone to leave. Vision then falls to the ground and begins to fall apart, as do the twins. Agatha informs Wanda that she tied her family to the twisted world and now one can’t exist without the other. Wanda puts the shield back up and Agatha blasts Wanda and her family. Wanda puts up a protective shield around them. 

In the library, Vision says that he does not have one single ounce of original material. He says that Vision 2 has the data but his memories are being kept from him, and he no longer feels like the real Vision after meeting Vision 2. He says that Vision 2’s memory storage is not so easily wiped and unlocks it, causing Vision 2 to say that he is Vision, at which point he blasts through the roof.

Wanda brings Agatha to the past and shows Agatha the destruction she caused. Wanda says the difference between the two of them is that Agatha did it on purpose. Agatha reanimates the dead witches, who chant Wanda’s name. They say that she’s the Scarlet Witch, the Harbinger of Chaos. Agatha says Wanda can’t win, and says that power isn’t the problem. It’s knowledge. Agatha tells Wanda to give her her power and she will correct the flaws in Wanda’s original spell. She says that Wanda and her family and the people of Westview can all live together in peace. No one will have to feel Wanda’s pain again, not even Wanda herself. Wanda tells Agatha to take the power, that she doesn’t want it. Agatha says she wants all the power and Wanda tries to give it to her. Agatha then says that once a spell is cast, it can never be changed. The world Wanda made will always be broken, just like her. Agatha tries to blast Wanda but fails. Wanda reveals the runes she made, which means she’s the only one who can use her powers. She thanks Agatha for the lesson. She says she doesn’t need Agatha to tell her who she is and then transforms into the Scarlet Witch.

Wanda tells Agatha that she’s going to lock Agatha in Westview in the role she chose; the nosy neighbor. Agatha says Wanda has no idea what she unlocked and that she’s going to need her. Wanda says she knows where to find Agatha and turns Agatha into the nosy neighbor.

So I've been thinking and I'm gonna dump it all in your inbox because it feels relevant to your interests.

But there is really something to be said about how spoiler culture has absolutely ruined quality storytelling.

Lately it's all about the shocking twist, and doing what the audience won't expect, and it leads to product with absolutely no lasting value. Meanwhile, 20+ years and hundreds of viewings later, Gandalf's death still means just as much as it did the first time. Even knowing that it's not permanent, even knowing he's coming back, even knowing that this is not the end... I still sob with Frodo every single time. Because Gandalf's death, while shocking, had a lasting and important impact on the story. If he hadn't have died Boromir would not have lost hope and would not have tried to take the ring, which in turn means Frodo might not have left just in time to avoid capture by the Uruk Hai. If he hadn't died, he would not have been resurrected with more power - power that was sorely needed in the ensuing war.

Gandalf's death is an important part of the story, and a deeply emotional one as well, and as such no matter how many times I watch those movies it gets me in the exact same way every. single. time.

Meanwhile, studios are lucky if I even remember their latest "shocking twist" that has no emotional weight, no bearing on the story, and no buildup. And I'm so tired of it

I totally agree with all of this.

I can't say for certain when this whole thing started, but do know that the first time it became noticeable was with the flop-buster that was Avengers: Endgame. While there was still the issue with overuse of CGI and general lack of passion in Infinity War, to its credit, it did end on a pretty great note, setting up the next movie in a very open way, leaving room to create an epic finale that satisfyingly paid off the culmination of over a decade of setup.

But then we got... what we got. And then it came out that half the time, the cast didn't even know what they were filming. They were lied to about the purpose of the funeral scene, vaguely told that it was a wedding, leaving everyone looking like bland cardboard cutouts in what should have been an emotional scene. Tom Holland was given scripts so redacted, they looked like the documents from Hidden Figures. Literally, he basically just got fed his lines and his lines only.

The actors became nothing more than props. Just show up, regurgitate this dialogue with no context or meaning, just say the words like a good little meat puppet, hit your mark and that's a wrap.

I don't care for Game of Thrones, but I can acknowledge that it had built up several plot lines and stories over the years, all for that to be dashed in favor of a "twist" - because people had figured out you know, the prophecy that had been set up and hinted at all along - and the showrunners found it unacceptable that the audience could possibly have picked up OK the hints and foreshadowing (as they're SUPPOSED TO). Because that would mean that they couldn't lord their intelligence over everyone else, "see!! You didn't see that coming did you? We GOT you, HA!"

Instead of taking pride in the fact that they had set up a good story and built up anticipation for that moment when those expectations were fulfilled, they decided they needed to change everything, even going contrary to the evidences and foreshadowing they had set up, just to get one over on the viewers.

Knives Out is the most recent thing I can think of where the twist wasn't a gotcha. The hints were there, but not necessarily obvious upon first watch. It all made sense when it was revealed and it rewards the audience for their efforts in trying to follow the clues.

The most important part of any actually decent twist is that you are able to see the hints upon rewatching. When you see it again, you can pick up on other clues and behaviors and signs that you didn't know before without the context of the ending.

Like The Sixth Sense - the first time you watch it, you, along with Bruce Willis, assume that of course he's alive! He interacts with people and has conversations and he's the little boy's counselor! But then the ending comes and you're shocked to learn that he's just another ghost that the little boy can talk to, just another who doesn't know he's dead. And then you rewatch it - and you see that he never actually does have a conversation with anyone but the boy. He doesn't move any objects, the chair when he's at dinner with his wife is already pulled out, she takes the check because she can't actually see him... How could you not have seen it before? Because the film was made so well and set up that way. Not to trick you, but to tell you a story. A story about a man who didn't know he was dead. And if he didn't know, how should you?

But nobody wants to put in that kind of effort and passion anymore. They only want to trick the audience, play by their own rules, and stroke their own ego.
