Ok I need to get this out somewhere because the way Wednesday (show) displays pilgrims really irks me. needless to say, spoilers for the show under cut!

Ok. Let's start right off the bat in the psychic vision Wednesday had of Joseph Crackstone in “Friend or Woe” when he was trying to kill all the outcasts.

For reference, Joseph Crackstone is canonically a pilgrim that helped found Jericho in 1625. He’s seen repeatedly being a sadistic asshole that is willing to kill anyone who doesn’t fit in, no matter the cost. Below is a transcript of part of the scene.

[villagers] Burn her! Burn her! Burn her!

[villager 1] Devil Spawn!

[villager 2] Beast!

[villager 3] Witch!

[villagers] Repent! Begone! Witch!

[Joseph Crackstone] Stand aside! Goody Addams! You have been judged before God and found guilty. You are a witch, a sorceress, Lucifer’s mistress herself. For your sins, you will burn this night, and suffer the flames of eternal hellfire.

[Goody Addams] I am innocent. It is you, Joseph Crackstone, that should be tried. We were here before you, living in harmony with nature and the native folk. But you have stolen the land. You have slaughtered the innocent. You have robbed us of our peaceful spirit. You are the true monster. All of you!

[Addams slices a blade at Crackstone’s cheek]

[villager 4] Punish her!

[Joseph Crackstone] The Devil ne’er sent such a demon.

[Addams cries out as Crackstone slaps her face]

[Joseph Crackstone] And I will send you back!

[Goody Addams] No!

[Joseph Crackstone] You are abominations in the Devil’s grip! I will not stop till I have expunged this New World of every outcast. Godless creatures!

[Crackstone and the villagers walk away from the meeting house]

[Joseph Crackstone] Set it ablaze!

...

[Goody Addams] He won’t stop until he’s killed us all! ...He’s here.

[Joseph Crackstone] There will be no escape for you.

After that, Wednesday wakes up.

There’s a couple things wrong with this scene. Burning’s were rare, if ever, in pilgrim and even puritan societies. The idea of ‘burn the witches!’ likely ties to Joan of Arc, a French martyr that was burned at the stake. Even during the Salem Witch Trials, the 19 deaths were all hangings and one crush...ing. (tl;dr, the accused denied being a witch and was sentenced to being crushed between two stones) Goody Addams, creator of the Book of Shadows, would have been the only confirmed witch that Crackstone targeted. I do applaud to the realism of Crackstone killing Addams specifically because she claimed innocence however, as that is exactly what happened to many of the accused witches in Salem, as tragic as it is.

Crackstone’s course of action is also very strange, as the cost to build (or rebuild, in this instance) was high. I can’t attest to the accuracy, but this site claims that it was about £80.00 during the 17th century (not accounting for modern inflation), for the meeting house it cites. This is a costly repair for a relatively weak and trivial public stunt.

While the supernatural outcasts in the show are drastically different from outcasts in real life, outcasts typically weren’t... Burned, or hung, or anything of the sort. Anne Hutchinson, for instance, was considered an outcast for her more individualistic beliefs regarding faith and reaching salvation. John Winthrop opposed her ideas, and when he became Governor, she was eventually banished. This can also apply to the Natives—while a decent number of those who survived disease ended up dying at the hands of European colonists, others were simply pushed west, banished from their homelands.

The fact that Crackstone targeted outcasts instead of witches is odd as well—witchcraft was a much more justifiable reason to kill during the 17th century over simple ‘outcastery’. For instance, there was another witch trial in Wethersfield, Connecticut that predates Salem, with one accusation and death in 1648, two in 1651, and one accusation and banishment in 1669. You could do all of that with charges of witchcraft, however that would be a lot more difficult if you charged ‘being an outcast’. The other people in the meeting house aren’t confirmed or denied to be supernatural outcasts, simply “abominations in the Devil’s grip”, so it’s hard to know if they really were supernatural or not. Plot wise, having Addams as a supernatural outcast might let the viewer infer that the others are also supernatural outcasts, however, false accusations were widespread (again, look at Salem!) and they could have just as easily been the result of fallout of the discovery of a real supernatural outcast.

Another albeit nitpicky detail is the stereotypical black/white clothing choice of pilgrims. While pilgrims—and puritans, for that matter—sometimes wore the well known black/white combo, they also had other articles of clothing in many bright colours (puritans were more reserved and stuck with symbolic, muted colours). The pilgrims typically only targeted detailed clothing (ribbons, seductive styles, etc. were discouraged likely to display modesty).

All right. Now for “A Murder of Woes”, of which holds two prominent scenes of Joseph Crackstone. The first takes place in his crypt after he’s revived:

[Laurel Gates] I am of your blood. I have summoned you to rid the world of outcasts once and for all.

[Joseph Crackstone] My vengeance will be swift and true.

[Wednesday Addams] As will mine.

[Crackstone’s staff pulses]

[Joseph Crackstone] Goody Addams. You haunt me still. You will suffer the same fate you bequeathed me.

[Crackstone stabs Addams in the gut]

[Joseph Crackstone] Now burn in the eternal fires of hell!

[Crackstone twists the knife suddenly]

[Joseph Crackstone] Where you belong.

[Crackstone and Gates leave as Addams stumbles to the floor]

[Laurel Gates] Sweet dreams, Wednesday!

And then, the scene depicted in the prophecy:

[Wednesday Addams] Howdy, pilgrim.

[Joseph Crackstone] How canst thy heart still beat? What demon sorcery is this?

[Xavier Thorpe] Stay away from her!

[Xavier shoots an arrow at Crackstone. He flips the arrow around and shoots Addams]

[Xavier Thorpe] No! Oh my God!

[Wednesday Addams] I’m fine. Go. Get them out of here! Now!

[Xavier Thorpe] Ok! Come on, guys. Let’s go! Go! Go!

[Addams grabs a nearby sword and attacks Crackstone. Addams is pinned to the ground]

[Joseph Crackstone] I will send you back to hell.

[Crackstone is stabbed through the heart, and killed for good]

There’s... Not a whole lot to note about this, actually.

I do find his hypocrisy in condemning witchcraft while using magic-like properties while zombified rather comedic though. He quite literally became the very thing he swore to destroy.

As an autistic child who didn't fit in anywhere, I always looked at the people I knew with strong ties to their heritage with big ol sparkly eyes. I would constantly pester my family about our heritage. Of course, Native American would be included in the list. Potawatomi, I'd be told, "she was the daughter of the chief," someone claimed at some point... Then I grew up, learned history, studied anthropology, and all together came to realize that any native heritage I had (if I had any to begin with) was nothing more than a "fun fact" to my family. It didn't mean anything to anyone.

I was still curious, though, and through working on a family tree for a few years, I realized I did have "native heritage," an x-times great grandma who was Shawnee. It made me wonder a lot of things. Did she pass on any of her culture to her children, or, for any of the numerous reasons that would have prevented/pressured her to not, didn't? And if she did teach her children, when did it stop being passed down? At what point did she stop being our grandmother and start being a "fun fact"?

Hey ive sent in what was basically a really well thought out fan letter like at least a month ago through here and it never got answered so im operating under the assumption that it got accidentally eaten by the ask box so I'm going to say what i had to say once more to make sure the message gets to you!

So a while ago i was very big into listening to explanations on horror series and args and whatnot and i had begun to watch a video about winter of 87 because i thought it would be interesting and when they mentioned the fact that you had made it i was surprised because my father was a very very big fan of you back in the day and I thought that you wouldn't even still be on the internet lol.

So i checked out your channel for the first time on my own with honestly quite a bit of fear because i didnt honestly remember what you were like. All i knew is that I enjoyed you as a child because my father watched you and my father was the absolute biggest piece of shit I have ever met lmao (complete kid diddler, bigot, the whole package really) so i did not have high hopes on you being a good person because of the things that my father enjoys but i was pleasantly surprised!

I decided to watch your remembrance of the daleks vid and i was really really enjoying it and all the points you put out in it but the whole time i was waiting for you to make some sort of transphobic joke about the transmat cuz hey lowhanging fruit. But it never happened. In fact it became quite clear to me you only had positive jokes to make about minorities and i was astonished.

I know youre just being a good person and all that but given my history it means a lot. As a queer autistic youth who grew up in a harmful environment its beautiful to find that the figures that i used to look up to would actually be on my side. You are just really a beacon of hope for me and a reminder that even when my life was at its lowest there was good and I think you are a very inspiring and genuinely wonderful person from everything ive seen about you.

I really wanna get into art history but I’m just not sure where to start. Im a history nerd though and though and would love to get into art history but my anxiety makes me second guess myself whenever I start to research it about starting at the wrong point. Do you have any tips on getting into it?

i would say as for art history, there is no right or wrong way to go about studying it. it just depends on what you want out of the experience ? if you want to be knowledgeable about art history generally then i would start at the beginning !! (if you want a brief “these are the artists that defined the time and the most famous works and the movements” knowledge) but you’re probably not going to get a very in-depth knowledge about everything.

if you’d rather know everything about the renaissance or everything about van gogh you can start there and get super into the politics/pigments/styles of the time and become an “expert” in that one area.

if you want to answer a lot of trivia questions right, take a tour of the most famous art works ever made ! and start there !!

if you’re more interested in modern art and the philosophy then there’s no shame just starting in the 1920s onward!!! there is no right or wrong way!! it’s all about what interests you most.

if you don’t know what interests you most yet, then i recommend starting chronologically and moving forward until you find something that sparks your interest !!!

khan academy is a great resource to start at !!!! (and it’s free)

as for writing a fic consistently, i wish i knew 😭😭 i have never had a consistent upload schedule for anything ever. and i hop around when things don’t interest me anymore 😭 i would say that and outline is always good!! so you always know where you’re going next with the fic ! it’s always easier to write when you’re like “chapter two: x,y,z happens and y sets up the thing for chapter five” <- i feel like i’m not being revolutionary here 😭 but yeah !! thank you for the kind words friend!! 🫶🏻💖

- You practically had to beg itachi to sit down with you to watch it. The show has always been classified as a "you thing." Or you'd watch it with your closest girl friends.

- But imagine getting the opportunity to watch this book nerd watch such an extravagant show. The thought alone gave you the courage to ask him to watch with you.

- I mean this man is defo NOT straight, so he needs to learn some queer culture!

- It's the night of a lifetime and he is NOT matching the vibe. The bright pink of the work room on the TV reflecting off onto his glasses and stoic face, along with his leg crossed and the man is sipping on a cup of tea like an old grandmother.

- The reaction from the first episode was lackluster at best. There's not much to tell if he liked it or not. Every time you caught a glance at him you could tell he had his "thinking eyes," the ones with the slight squint and the soft furrowed brows.

- You ask if he liked the episode and he responds very properly, "it was very interesting, thank you for showing me." Polite, but not very telling if he was actually intrigued or was just sparing your feelings.

- In a surprising turn of events, the next night as you two are washing dishes from dinner, he casually asks if you wanted to continue to the second episode. (HUH?!?!)

- Second episode turns into third episode, and there's more signs that he's slowly catching the drag race bug. During the judges' debriefing you start to hear him humming at comments that you can only assume are comments he agrees with.

- The whole time you have been commenting and reacting to all the challenges, runways, and lip syncs. By episode five Itachi begins chiming in with you, although not quite to the energy you have. He'll chuckle more at the puns and gimmicks, and will always give a soft compliment to the queens with the more interesting designs. Of course he'd like the more artistic queens.

- Nothing could have prepared you, however, to be watching one of the runways with him and he casually remarks, "...hmm, a unitard and fishnets. Michelle will hate that..."

- (please imagining him saying that would have me looking at him like he's one of the damn pit crew 😈)

- By the end you two are doing your own debriefing after runways and lipsyncs, getting to hear his analytical brain try to break down drag fashion as opposed to his usual history or theory material.

- Little secret, he definitely only started it to spare your feelings. But look at him now. Regardless, he's happy to let his guard down and watch what he would now consider his "guilty pleasure" show with his lover.

- The only one, besides you, who he brings up the show with is Shisui. But they're super close, and I think Shisui definitely might have watched an episode with one of his hook-ups, and even knows the names of some of the more famous queens. (They're both queer men talking about drag race, how original lol)

but my picture of it was

clusterfuck are the templars. obviously annabel lee is the master templar of this whole ordeal. handed down the position from her father as a family title. Lenore was a templar before escaping her family and restarting a new, being rescued by duke and the misfits and climbing and being respected enough to hold title of mentor Lenore escaped being a templar, she was ready to be one. Her training with her brother and social status being held with the other templar rankings had stood a foot hold and her power was rising all because of her fathers status as head grandmaster templar.

Until her and her brother, Theo, was required to go on a mission to investigate an Object of Eden. Didn't go as planned, Theo ended up dying, Lenore lost interest as being a Templar and her father used that and Theos death as a way to shut her down completely. So she ran, as far as she could. She eventually ran into Duke and the rest. It was Pluto who helped her first, seeing her beat down and left to nothing until Berenice saw the Templar ring and it took a while but they trusted her and she climbed up to Mentor.

Annabel, however, is still a templar. Her father is still grandmaster but she's right behind him and his authority is her authority as well. She secretly and very, very, discreetly tracked down Lenore. What would her father think if he found her searching for a traitor?

Annabel found Lenore, convinced her father to open trade to (wherever lenore is currently at with the creed) and made her way to Lenore. She ended up falling for her, she never intended it but she has to keep it to herself and make it seem like she's just there on business.

Moral of the story, Annabel becomes head templar and her right and left hand are Monty and Prospero Lenore is a former templar turned assassin and finds out her childhood friend who her fathers introduced to each other out of pure templar business is now living in the same region as she is. And she thinks its on templar business but for Annabel its for Lenore.

been thinking a lot about the "im joining the war on pretentiousness on the side of the pretentious" and how it is affirming my elitist need to be Specific And Pedantic about the term "Classical Music"

i used to think people who were pedantic about that were pretentious assholes, and that's probably true, but the more i have learned about 20th century western music history the more i think being specific about that shit matters. i don't expect everyone on planet Earth who wants to talk about dead guy music to know exactly which period every piece of music ever was written in, and i think the term is used to describe a category of music that is useful to discuss because it IS treated as a category, but i also think the category sucks.

when people use "classical music" to refer to basically the Generally Agreed Upon White People Canon Of Dead Guy Western European Composers, i want to emphasize that they include works that span about 4 actual centuries of lived human experience and shove them all together completely devoid of context.

There are two equally sucky reasons for why I hate it.

Composers who were writing music that was intended to be uncomfortable, fucked up, experimental, specifically a reaction to previous ""classical"" music categories.... just get lumped in with them because in hindsight it was "decided" that their music is also Qualified to be Elevated to the same Standard TM.

The circumstances in which some 20th century compositions were deemed Good Enough to be Elevated to ""classical"" are SO FUCKING POLITICAL.

On point 1:

Basically everything written in the early 20th century was a response to how sick everyone was of the Romantic era. Mahler and Debussy were parts of very different reaction movements (maximalism and symbolism respectively) but both of them intentionally broke Romantic-era rules because they were sick of them. The shit Debussy did to harmony was BONKERS by the standard of the turn of the century.

(He also totally appropriated scales and motifs from gamelan, which is both an interesting historical result of the World Fair and a newly globalizing world, and also still kind of shitty and worth acknowledging that orientalist exoticism was a huge part of his clout. I'm not about to start a debate on influence vs appropriation here, but regardless it's worth knowing about.)

It's honestly kind of a disservice to the radical innovation of some of these composers to lump them with the exact kind of music they were explicitly being a distinct reaction to. This isn't just for 20th century composers; it's true for just about every movement encapsulated in the ""classical"" umbrella. Romantic music broke the rules of the Classical era the same way Classical music broke the rules of the Baroque era. All of them have deep relationships to emerging technologies and the geopolitical circumstances in which they emerged, but I am a nerd for the early 20th century specifically so I know way more about that than the other ones, sorry. I WILL say that I am practiced in Baroque cello though, and at its heart BAROQUE MUSIC HAS MORE IN COMMON WITH JAZZ THAN ROMANTIC ERA MUSIC. I AM DEAD SERIOUS ABOUT THIS. The emphasis on improvisation, no conductors, listening and handing off solos, using figured bass/lead sheets, I could go on!

And while this is obviously focused on Western Europe, what exactly ""counts"" as Western Europe is ALSO insanely political - but that's its own post.

On point 2:

Do you know that one of Shostakovich's most-played symphonies even today is his fifth? "why do i care about that" because his early career was defined by writing supercool weird modernist shit and also drew from what the weird modernist composers in Western Europe were doing, and then when Stalin came into power, Shostakovich was basically met with "stop doing that disgusting degenerate shit or you are dead," and his fifth symphony was written out of fear for his fucking life to an "acceptable" standard of "innovative, but not TOO innovative. if it doesn't sound good your ass is dead. you need to write us Good Russian Music or else."

so his fifth symphony is Good Russian Music that was acceptable to those in power, unlike his degenerate weirdcool stuff from earlier.

and it is THAT symphony that is his lasting legacy to the world, divorced of context and just presented as "this sounds good, doesn't it? :)" almost a century later.

Sorry if this is annoying lmao I'm just a weird nerd being a weird nerd. Please drop any weird Jordan Li parallels you've seen in other fandoms or other rants about characters you love in the replies. Be a weird nerd with me.

But! My biggest fandom is Sailor Moon, and I can't stop thinking about Sailor Neptune/Marie and Sailor Uranus/Jordan. Ignoring the obvious, there's a few things that really make me think limoreau.

i will be putting spoilers for sailor moon, mainly the third arc

the lore around the outers and their 'cosmic purpose' or whatever is very interesting to me. so they are basically like lone watchmen, destined to patrol the outer circles of our solar system. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto hold the keys to destroying an entire world if its ever necessary (the ability that saturn has, they like... can summon her? create her? idk im still a lil iffy on that part. but like they each have a thing, put the things together, saturn becomes a human death star.) so like big duty! big responsibility! They take it very seriously.

(all of this is from mainly e106 09:44 - 18:20 ish. I watch the viz dub if anyones curious :) )

either way, what makes me think of limoreau is the fact that neptune discovers her destiny first. she accepts the device, she becomes a guardian. (marie accepts the truth and wants to be a real hero, its practically forced upon her with her history and whatnot). she is the one who comes to haruka and like tells her about her destiny. shes like 'this is not easy, dont do this if ur not ready' and then saves her life and seeing michiru's heroism and dedication (and her love for haruka :) ) and then he chooses to become a guardian. (which just gives me strong 'fuck the rankings' vibes)

There's a scene right before this where they talk about the end of the world and it has gala scene vibes.

But what's the most interesting is the fact that unlike a lot of the other characters, they have very little doubt in their relationship and their choices. They move as a unit because they are united in purpose. Neptune is never doubtful of Uranus and she understands Uranus well. Even Mamo and Usagi have multiple moments of doubt and they are like super destined by fate or whatever

So to me, they are the strongest couple. And it's the undercurrent of devotion to duty that really really reminds me of limoreau. I really view the entirety of season one as matching up with those 10 minutes of backstory. And then imagining that like end of season 1 limoreau as the START of season 3 harukaxmichiru and then how would Jordan and Marie react to fckn sailor moon like jenfkdjdjskndbh the episode with Usagi and Haruka being chained together is one of my all time faves and like... Jordan would act the same. I think it was that that convinced me that Haruka and Jordan match up better than Seiya and Jordan.

And then Neptune. She's kind, sweet, and yet unrelenting. Teasing and serious, driven by duty. Idk she's a very enigmatic character, just like Marie imo? But idk dhjdjdhshksj I need to do some more thinking about Marie.

Anyways, that's my unhinged rant.
