Which Hermione are you talking about?

i think when describing Hermione as book-smart, nerdy, introverted, fussy and socially awkward that only breaks SCHOOL rules for Harry’s adventures because she’s his friend, is also very insecure and kinda cute that Ron would love and would LOVE Ron, people are thinking of the Hermione from book 1 and 2. Typical Virgo girl - like very stereotype tumblr horoscope described Virgo. They cant think too far ahead or the big picture, but will perfect any details on their work for their friends and those who need them. They do think by the book, literally. Ron, with his emotional and social intelligence and his jest for life, would help her to be more openminded and relaxed with her perfectionism.

And when people are saying she’s this vindictive, extroverted, ambitious, unapologetic activist, that has a penchant for breaking BIGGER rules as in LAW and ORDER in the wizarding world with sudden social vision and influence, they are talking about the “Rowling” Hermione who existed in book 4 onwards. She’s an Aquarius rising and is NOT a good partner to Ron. Whatever Rowling intended with her, the book 1 and 2 is NOT the second Hermione aka Rowling and would turn out very differently from Rowling herself. And after book 3, it seems Rowling lost touch and connection on who’s really Hermione and who’s herself. That’s why the “breaK” of the 4th wall, of Hermione’s characterization, and the loss of Ron’s. And why it’s so hard to get a picture of her in fandom : whenever you have book quotes as Romonie evidence for Hermione 1, people would have theirs for Hermione 2. Again which is she?  What the hell would Ron/Hermione become? 

Hermione 1 cant be paired with Harry because she’s so…nerdy and closeminded and cant be paired with Malferret because he literally called her Mudblood. But who is us to say anything about Hermione 2, who used Umbridge’s method to punish people, who not only nagged (Virgo) but also can lie and can trick adults into submission with her so-much-bigger-than-Hogwarts-and-Dumbledore “big picture” rule breakings and also solved anyone’s romance problems (Aquarius) ? She would and can fix 100 Draco’s because he lied and tricked people out of Hogwarts scope too, just that he’s so much more coward and incompetent than her. Also Fred/Hermione, the intellectual business man/intellectual business woman ship itself and even Fred died because he’s still a character that has no meta powers. No wonder Snape/Hermione exists. Even he cant break the meta like Hermione 2.  

Compared to Ron/Hermione. Harry/Ginny is much more consistently written throghout the books and same for any other ship, because Rowling remembers that they are characters and not herself and her problems.

To be honest, "Hermione 1″ was also VERY ready to fuck shit up and break the rules when it was convenient for her.

Remember how she set Snape on fire out of fear for Harry’s life? How she brewed Polyjuice Potion so they’d be able to interrogate Malfoy (and Ron himself, very justly, points out that this “a plan where so many things can go wrong”: they didn’t know the password, they almost got caught by Percy, Malfoy could’ve been doing his homework in his room).

But “Hermione 1″ IS extroverted, she’s bossy and nerdy and in-your-face, she knows stuff and isn’t afraid to tell you she knows, she’s not the kind of person that stays passive and lets herself get steamrolled (... unless the person steamrolling her is an authority figure).

The issue is that as Rowling went on, she started to prioritize both Harry and Hermione’s characters over Ron’s. Ron is constantly looked at in a “bit rubbish ain’t he?” fashion, almost patronizingly, a sort of “oh you’re so immature but there there you’ll grow up eventually, if you could hurry up tho that’d be great”.

Ron receives ZERO support from his friends as he goes around trying to figure out how this “growing up” thing works.

Harry and Hermione are meanwhile excused of everything bad they do, because “Harry’s got PTSD and such a difficult life”, and “oh well Hermione is so mature, she’s allowed to be impatient and annoyed with people who can’t keep up with her genius!! Plus they probably did something to deserve it anyway”.

What Hermione really needs is to be humbled. It could happen in many ways, some more cruel than others. Have her make a mistake that for fucking once has consequences on her personal life and fucks all her shit up. Have her need to accept defeat, to understand and internalize that it was no one’s fault but hers that it happened that way. Destroy the notion that “no but actually HERMIONE was the true victim-”.

The sad truth is, a lot of people want to be Hermione - “Hermione 2″. The girl who always turns out to be technically right, who puts the fear of God into those who offend her, who is such a key player in Harry's story, whom a Quidditch superstar would date, who constantly gets told how brilliant and clever she is but can also look so pretty but doesn't because "she's smarter than wanting to be pretty"... who would refuse to be such a girl? Especially if you idealize her so much that you forget she’s not supposed to be nice, approachable, unfailingly kind and all that crap (which is the image of Hermione we got thanks to the fucking movies).

I do enjoy the idea of Hermione being this feral gremlin that loves her friends and would set the world on fire for their sake - but a thing that happens starting from GOF onward is Hermione setting the world on fire more for her own sake than for her friends’. See how it’s only once Rita Skeeter made an article about her, Krum and Harry that Hermione goes truly on the warpath when at first she kinda was like “ugh people are so dumb to believe her”. How Rita Skeeter in OOTP is identified as “one of Hermione’s least favourite people in the world” when it’s Harry who was the most preyed on by Rita. See how Hermione Confunds McLaggen in HBP so Ron can join the Quidditch team (and so Hermione can feel like Ron “owes” her something). And of course see her wiping her parents’ memories and beating Ron up when he’s back...

The problem is that JKR thinks abuse, if done by a woman, is badass.

If anon is looking for western AAA games there’s like red dead redemption assassin’s creed fallout franchise mass effect tomb raider watch dogs deus ex etc. most of those are already open world RPGs of different genres. Most rpgs published by major companies go for open world nowadays.

I still suggest sailing the high seas for AAA though unless you’re supporting them for their diverse content or wait until they go like 50-70% sale. In this economy those prices are not worth it for the amount of content they give and the increase in sales doesn’t even really go to the dev teams anyway its more direct to the company. For me its just a metric to tell the companies I want more diverse content. Support Indie devs steam has its own indie tag to make it easy to find!

or if AAA isn’t a necessity open up steam and search by tag. I got 1200 results checking fantasy open world and rpgs on steam.

Some particular suggestions that I haven’t seen though I guess its because its been like 4 years since their release?:

- The Outer Worlds open world rpg scifi shooter is made by a AA company which is known for Fallout New Vegas Pillars of Eternity and SWTOR KOTOR II. The player character doesn’t get a romance but you do get a companion who is a sapphic asexual and you can help her get a girlfriend. Its has choices and relationships in a similar style to FNV

- Tell Me Why is a narrative adventure game by Dontnod who made Life is Strange. It features a trans man as one of the leads and Dontnod had this on their FAQ https://www.tellmewhygame.com/faq/ : “Trans, nonbinary and gender non-conforming staff at both DONTNOD and Xbox have made countless key creative contributions to Tell Me Why, including in character design, narrative and dialogue, building inclusive online spaces for the game, and much more. To ensure that Tyler’s character would resonate with a wide and diverse audience of trans people, the Tell Me Why team worked closely with two of GLAAD’s transgender staff: Nick Adams, Director of Transgender Representation; and Blair Durkee, Special Consultant for Gaming. I say why go for a game who names a trans character in the same ignorant way it named Cho and Kingsley when you could go for games that have creators who genuinely care for and listen to the perspectives and rights of the people they’re trying to represent right? In addition to all the other issues.

if magical systems in particular are a need aside from open world rpgs:

- Tiny Tina’s Wonderland – if you’re more familiar with borderlands this is a spinoff but spellcasting instead of guns

- Pillars of Eternity is fantasy from the same studio as outer worlds and is really good. Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire was the latest release

the TES games have been mentioned but I wanted to reiterate that there are 5-6 magic schools and 100+ spells for those games. Worldbuilding and roleplaying is very fun and makes it quite repeatable so worth the money. They all also have quite a prolific modding community especially oblivion and skyrim and it isn’t that hard to download mods to personalize the game. But even without mods its still fun to replay and go on sale along with ESO often enough

Most JRPGs in general have magic systems and are largely open world. All of the final fantasy games have magic. Adjacent is kingdom hearts. I’ll just add the Shin Megami Tensei series which is related to Persona. The Atelier series brand is alchemical magic. The “Tales of ____” of bandai namco series allows you to main the magical casting characters if you wish. Ni No Kuni is again fantasy setting. Valkyrie Elysium was recently released. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 too was released last year.

Forspoken is a recent game published by SquareEnix so its technically jrpg but its setting is western with a black main character that was rendered based off the VA who is half black caribbean. The main character is based in New York then gets transported to a fantasy world where she gains magic and mixes that up with parkour style movement. if you can’t afford it yet wait for a sale.

Check out golden week for sales since they tend to really go low for JRPGs during that time more than any other sale

Some indie games that have witchy elements:

Flying Neko delivery – if you like studio ghibli and kiki’s delivery service why not fly around on a broom as a cat making deliviries?

Little witch nobeta – you play as a little witch to explore ancient castles. The magical system is a bit limited but at the price you’re getting it I think its a good deal

Little Witch in the woods – 2d pixel art in the style of old school rpgs you play as a witch and make potions and cast spells, help people and refurbish your house.

Potion craft – not an rpg but its an alchemy simulator

Kena: bridge of spirits – not witchy but it has magic and exploration. Not quite open world in that you tend to travel linearly but you’re free to go back to places you’ve explored before. The gaming company partnered with a vietnamese animation studio and they based the animation on the environment of SEA/East Asia so if you’re from there and find the environmental aspects familiar in a fantastical way like buildings and the way the characters were conceptualized that’s why. from where im frm Kena costs the equivalent of $15 but it seems like its still expensive on steam US though as it costs $40? it tends to get 50% off on epic stores though so you can wait for its sale there

kitori academy – should be coming out this year. You’re a magical apprentice going to school to learn magic.

I was sent death threats for shipping rosekiller. This is mainly an issue i’ve seen on marauders twitter though, where fans can essentially try ‘cancel’ you for different opinions you have. I feel a lot more comfortable and safer on tumblr.

Hey!!! (This isn’t a hate message! I’m writing by anonymous because I’m quite scared of my friends finding out I quite like radfem ideology)

I was listening to “The witch trials of Jk Rowling” (have you heard it?) and I was just wondering on why certain celebrities can be forgiven or their mistakes can be forgotten by the public but Jk rowling is from now on, a “terrible person”??

I’m quite young, a teenager, and I relate to the HP books so much. Obviously, I have a lot of respect for JK and I one day want to be a writer too… so I just can’t seem to understand why she’s so continuously hated. I know lots of other celebrities are attacked and hated on.. but people always seem to move on. But never from her.

Its just been an itch I can’t scratch, and I know it’s because of sexism, but again, lots of others have done terrible things. But nobody ever seems able to move on from JK. Everytime HP is brought up, she HAS to be insulted.

(Sorry for the rant! I just don’t have anyone to tell!!)

You've got a point here. It's absolutely true : people not being able to move on from JK Rowling isn’t logical. Many celebrities have done far more horrible things and people have moved on. So why don't they do the same thing for her ? I personally think there are several reasons :

1) She's a woman. Obvious answer but still important ; a lot of the hate and violence directed at JK Rowling comes from sexism and misogyny. They wouldn't hate her as much if she wasn't female. We know that women and men aren't held to the same standards. Men can do absolutely a lot of things and be forgiven. Women do not have that privilege : in fact we get hated for very stupid little mistakes, harmless things, for having different opinions... If she was a man, she wouldn't receive all this hate. But she isn’t. And it shows in the language people use against her that their hatred comes, for a big part, from misogyny. Perhaps they'd have moved on if JK was a man, but she is a woman.

2) She cares about women and put women first. People hate that. Men have to come first, especially if you're a woman. But JK ? She does things for women and she is proud of it. People hate female solidarity. They hate seeing women caring for other women. They hate that she's ready to fight the whole world and popular ideologies to help women. It's not what women are supposed to do.

3) Related to the two first points but... she is everything people hate in a woman. She has power, she is successful, smart, funny, confident, she expresses her opinions even on controversial topics, she is strong minded, unbothered by their bullshit... They hate that she's a successful woman, that she speaks her mind and isn’t afraid to say what she thinks, they hate that a woman does not support their ideology, they hate that she will not apologize, they hate that she is smart, they hate that she is confident, they hate everything about her. A woman isn’t supposed to be like this. A woman is supposed to put people's (men's) feelings first, to be sweet and submissive, to apologize or back down if she does something people didn't like... well she said fuck that. And now they're angry.

4) We know that TRAs are basically MRAs. The trans rights movement is a men's rights movement. It's a misogynistic movement that benefits the patriarchy. It oppresses women and give even more power to men. So when JK Rowling fights against it, she fights against something that put men first, give them more power, help them break women's boundaries... that's everything people hate. The men feel attacked, their fandom is offended. She fights against their movement. You can't criticize the patriarchy and try to prevent men to get what they want. People are so shocked that a woman does it.

5) Jealousy. Is tied to everything else, but people are jealous because she did something unique. No one had ever written books that successful before. No one had ever made that much money from writing books before. I feel like many people were waiting for a reason to hate on her, or at least are happy to have one now. They'd like to erase her name, so that history and people forget her success and the fact that no writer ever had as much success. They'd like to prove that she isn’t special or that they're better than her. Plus, she is a woman. Can you imagine how mad people are that a woman had done something as huge as that ? Especially since she proved that she was a good person after that, giving a lot of money to charity, spending billions of dollars to create ways to help women and children... They'd like to prove she isn’t that great.

6) She criticizes gender ideology and TRAS are losers and crying babies lol

Many celebrities have done terrible things, but people moved on because it didn't hit all these sensitive points. To me, at least. I'll add if more reasons come to my mind (I think I had more and then I forgot them) but for now I think that's all.

I think its kinda funny how Rowling self inserted into Hermione but forgot herself is a adult woman, and Hermione is a teenager sometimes, but like only sometimes.

A lot of Hermiones rule bendings and actions just sounds like what an 20s or 30s something would want to do, and would have full conviction as well as planning ability to carry it out. Sorta like the way you cant file a lawsuit and WIN if you are 10 but can if you are 21. Rowling wishes she could do what Hermione can do but forgot she was writing a teenager, then went "oh its ok. She settled it all in the end off pages."

Rowling will be like "Hermione is me and so mature and i wanted to do that to people i hate all my life" when it comes to time traveling - to take more classes than her peers because its fair where? - and "punishing" a bad journalist who spread stupid rumors and "punishing" the students and teachers she hated, or erasing her parents out of her records. Because only adults could break big rules like that and maybe deal with consequences. But then in the same books same chapters she will be like "Hermione is forever 13 year old and hates defying rules" when it come to the characters emotional development. And worse, after that couldnt write all the messy logical backlashes and consequences that this teenagers actions left.

Coupling with Emma Watsons casting and all the Mary Sue script changes influencing later books, the result is the worse, most self entitled, inconsistent, sloppily written female character ever created among all the real, logical teenage characters. Some like Harry is Mary Sue-ish, but hes at least consistent and logical to a teenager. Hermione is a Sue and couldnt even be a decent one that makes a lick of sense.

we like to dunk on Movie Hermione, and her looks and the Ron bashing can make us dislike her because thats not book Hermione, but in terms of being a Mary Sue , movie Hermione is actually a much better written character than book Hermione. One is at least consistent and is a character despite "perfect". Movie Hermiones lines and moments are still things a , very perfect, schoolgirl can know and do. Book Hermione cant decide if shes a teenager character with emotional flaws or a 30 something 4th wall goddess with super meta powers that can solve every characters romance problems. Like you cant choose both of these, Rowling.

its so frustrating bc this is actually why its so hard to convince Hermione lovers and criticizers on points from either side on her personality and her relationships with others. Because a very blazen competent girl that could "punish" teachers and students and new reporters alike on the basis of very adult, very real LAW and ORDER can not act like an jealous, immature 15 year old that also cries all the time with no handle on her emotions, is "book smart" and stick for rules, and vice versa. I mean, the way she "punishes" Rita and Marietta is totally the way a teenager fantasizes about punishing the people who hurt them, but the fact that Hermione manages to do it without ever having it bite her in the ass is the part that's really making her a Mary Sue for me.

I was a dark little child, and I was entranced by the first potions lesson on. He wasn't ever a good guy, very much an asshole, very much "I hate all of you and I hate that I have to do the right thing, but I'm doing it anyway". He wasn't a good teacher, obviously, but he was forced to teach by both of the nasty old men who were controlling him. And then in the last few books, he went full incel. And it was weird and bad and I didn't like it. I mean, the last two books were weird and bad in general. But I do think Severus was fucked over in particular.

ALOT of streamers even tried setting up charity stuff for their streams and people like you harassed and bullied them out of it. you people have ironically done MORE HARM to people in general over a fucking video game about wizards than jk rowling and you know what this is coming from someone who doesnt even fucking like harry potter. ive tried. my whole family loves it but i cant. and after this i cant and i wont i cant stand the fucking fake activist people in this dumb fucking wizard fandom who think its okay to harm people in the name of "trans lives" or "trans rights" over a fucking video game you make me sick. harrassment, doxxing, and suibaiting ARE SERIOUS ISSUES and they do not become "OKAY" or fucking justifiable because you think its for a "good cause" Thats not how this works and you should be ashamed of yourselves. boycott the game if you want. but no body has any right for any reason to harm others.

it sucks to be sent hate mail, it sucks even more when the person sending it has a point.

the thing is, yes, i am jewish. but i’m not very good at it. i never went to hebrew school, never had a bat mitzvah. my family doesn’t celebrate sukkot or purim. we didn’t cover the mirrors at my grandfather’s shiva. i don’t do shabbat dinner every friday. i don’t write god’s name as g-d for the same reason i don’t write halloween with an apostrophe: it interrupts the reading process for me. i took something i heard years ago—that judaism is matrilineal—and i took it as fact without doing any further research on the subject. i fucked up. i should have just said “i won’t exclude non-matrilineal jews” and left it at that. in fact, i probably shouldn’t have brought up lineage to begin with. and i will edit the original post to reflect that.

with all that out of the way, i want to reiterate what so many people have said before me: please don’t send hate to poll runners on tumblr. and while we’re at it, maybe just don’t send hate to anyone you don’t know over the internet. i don’t care what you do to asshole celebrities; jk rowling and elon musk deserve whatever shit they get and they’ve got plenty of sycophants backing them anyway. but if it’s a not-remotely-famous complete stranger? just don’t. it’s not that hard.

these complaints were valid, and i’m glad this person voiced them. but they did not need to turn it into a personal attack. everything beyond “go fuck yourself and i hope no one comes to your shiva” was feedback that deserved to be heard. it is entirely possible to call someone out in a way that doesn’t make them feel like absolute shit. but this kind of vitriol doesn’t help anyone.

maybe i am unqualified to be running this tournament. and when someone gets hurt, whether the hurt was intentional doesn’t matter; no one wants to hear “but i didn’t mean to!” when confronting the person who hurt them. but i think it does matter that i never intended to cause anyone harm. you did.

anyway, i’m probably going to lay low on this blog for a while. i might close submissions early—i got as many submissions within the first hour as @shittycartoondadshowdown got in total. i won’t close the form without letting y’all know in advance. but i’m running three other tournaments. i have plenty of shit going on in my life beyond that. i’m tired. and to all the people i hurt, i’m sorry.
