Hello there - I had a question which I think(?) you might be able to help with. Or at least point me in the direction of more information.
I have a few chronic illnesses and disabilities and as such there's many gremlins I deal with. One thing that crops up a lot are comorbidities between my conditions.
I'm trying to be more vigilant with regards to my health - as a child there were many, many missed opportunities to get my symptoms seen to by a doctor (all squandered due to my parents nor believing me about my symptoms).
Anyway, I wanted to ask about MCAS and if you know it's possible to have it but not realise it?
I've had a few incidents like this, but mostly forgot them or ignored them. But yesterday I ate some basil from my windowsill plant and I had what can only be described as an allergic reaction. I'm not allergic to any foods (as far as I know) but I've eaten from this exact plant before and been fine. I have mint growing next to it which I also ate and it caused the same reaction. Again, I've eaten from this exact plant before. It was like my mouth was burning or stinging and the leaves felt, spicy? In my mouth. I'm not sure how to describe it but I hope you know what I mean. Today I ate from the exact same plants and had no reaction whatsoever.
I've definitely had similar things happen before- but events like yesterday are few and far between. But utterly confounding when they do happen. I have urticaria (diagnosed since age 18) which I suspect is relevant, somehow.
I'm starting to wonder if a lot of my symptoms I've written off have actually been MCAS. But I'm not sure. Do you have any advice around talking to a doctor about this or if I have a leg to stand on so to speak?
Sending my best wishes!
Hey friend, sorry to hear you've been dealing with some neglect.
And considering MCAS was only really recognized as a condition in the last 15 years, it's absolutely possible to have it and not know until symptoms get worse. I was experiencing anaphylactoid reactions my whole childhood, but because I tested negative on IgE tests (I still do), it was dismissed as anxiety right up until I hit my 30s and I experienced my first episode of full-blown idiopathic anaphylaxis.
(Note: anaphylaxis is not a requirement for diagnosis, and not everyone experiences it.)
You should discuss your inconsistent allergies with your doctor or allergist. I would also advise pursuing allergen testing, as new allergens can develop at any time, even if you don't have mast cell instability.
If you suspect some form of mast cell instability may be the root cause of your issues, I'd suggest checking out The Mast Cell Disease Society. (Their website is in the process of being updated, still. But they have good resources there.)
Their signs and symptoms (and triggers) page has recently been updated and is fairly concise:
If any of that rings a bell, it might be worth bringing up with your allergist, but fair warning, not everyone is receptive to the idea of mast cell disorders outside of mastocytosis. (And even then some doctors gaslight their patients to hell and back.)
If you do find yourself in this situation, try joining a couple of support groups to see if there are any MCAS aware doctors in your area, or alternatively, try the TMS physician finder tool:
Sorry if it seems like I'm just throwing a lot of links at you, but they are very useful links and I'm not at my best right now to explain things.
I hope this is helpful and if I missed something, please let me know.
I wish you luck in remedying your chronic health issues <3

hi tattedpetticoats!
i got into making bobbin lace recently, but i don’t know what kind of thread i should use for it. do you have any recommendations? thanks :)
Hello friend!
The short answer is, anything! When you're starting out, just about any thread will give you good practice. Truly, you could use standard sewing thread and it'd still turn out just fine. Colours, so you can track specific pairs? Glitter? The world is your oyster! The only thing I'd say is look out for something with a good twist in it that isn't too fuzzy, so it won't felt and it won't unravel. Maybe some nice crochet cotton? If you have a local craft store, poke around and see what catches your eye! Thrift shops can also be EXCELLENT sources of random threads. I strongly prefer natural fibre, especially cotton, but that's just me.
Now, if you want to get a bit more specific, I have always heard from my grandma that different types of bobbins beget different types of thread. If you're using wooden bobbins with a chunkier bit at the end, those are made so you can tug them and pull your threads into place. Use a thicker thread with these!
I'm more used to English-style bobbins, with spangles (the technical term for the beads threaded on wire). These spangles weigh around 8g each, and they provide all the pull you need when you're using stupidly fine thread. If you tugged on them the way you would European-style bobbins with bulbs on the ends, you'd snap your thread (trust me on this. I know a thing or two about snapping threads). So if you have a fondness for styles like Buckinghamshire Point Ground (what I'm most used to), you want to work up to very fine thread, with a slightly coarser thread on one or two pairs to form the 'gimp' which outlines your patterns.
I personally can't really give you any good recommendations for brands/stockists, because I get thread from my Grandma's MASSIVE stash, but perhaps some other lace maker could help me out?
@thehistoricalfrog, any thoughts?

Oh, this makes me so happy. I'm super glad you finally found a Fun-Guy Bertie and could add him to your bunch of Fun-Guys!
Thank you for sharing the photos with me! They look lovely together. I've always liked Fun-Guy Ozzie the most (he looks like a sweet baby to me) but Fun Guy Bertie is definitely second, because he just looks so ridiculous with his humongous head and fat body.
Judging by the popularity of these guys, I am sure he isn't the last Fun-Guy and your collection will grow quite a bit more! 😁

Pride Angels FAQ
What is Pride Angels?
It is my series of angel designs in the colors of different Pride flags. I am planning to make the Pride Angels into stickers, pins, keychains, patches, and lanyards. The campaign is planned for June 2024, after Angelology IV. You can follow the pre-launch page to be notified when the campaign launches.
Can you draw X for the Pride Angels series?
Before inquiring, please check that your request is not already complete! I am not taking requests for any new flags at this time, but read on for how you can request a Pride Angel during the pin campaign. After I complete this series this year, I am not planning to make any more Pride Angels.
About the Pride Angels design request pledge tier:
If you would like to request a Pride Angel, I will have a pledge tier available in the pin campaign to pay to request one. Outside these pledge tiers I will not be accepting any requests. Please save your requests for the pin campaign!
If you nab one of the design request pledges, you can request a flag and optionally suggest a theme or inspiration. If I shared a design you liked that I ended up not going with, you could request that too.
Where can I find the 2022 Pride Angels merch?
Most of the past Pride Angels have been discontinued in my main shops, but you can still find them as pins, stickers, keychains, and patches with my stockists.
I liked an old design better. Will the old designs be available during the campaign?
Depending on order quantity I will make the 2022 Pride Angels available as stickers, keychains, pins, and patches. If they don’t meet the order threshold they will not be funded.
Can I draw a Pride Angel too?
Of course, I don’t own angels or Pride flags! If I inspired you I would love to be tagged to see and share your design.

By the way, for the true enthusiast - Mando ne'tra gal, or black ale, is not Guinness. It's a milk stout like Mackeson - sweeter, more fragrant, and 3% ABV. As the Mandos would say, ne'tra gal mesh'la, jat'isyc, bal - wayii - jahaal'got; black ale looks good, tastes good, and - by golly - it does you good! For American readers of drinking age, you can buy a slightly stronger version of Mackeson in the USA: check out this list of stockists.

INSIDE ISSUE 40 // “Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo produce the style of fantasy art which I personally grew up with – as have, it seems, many of the creatives I have spoken to over the years. This isn’t that surprising, considering that Boris and Julie are world-renowned fantasy artists. The couple, both partnered in marriage and sometimes within their painting, are as much in demand as ever. An aesthetic set in stone in previous generations of fantasy, it is like visual popping candy for the brain to see modern actors portrayed amidst the dramatic environments. Look closer, and you will see the subtleties of modern culture embedded. This wonderful mix of nostalgia and contemporary references is refreshing, playful – and most importantly, shows there is very much still a place for fantasy painting in the modern age.” An intimate conversation between artist couple @borisvallejoartist & @juliebellartist about life, love, and living and working together. I love when you talk about clothes. How do you shop?
OH MAN valda my dude you have opened such a can of worms
so the tldr of it is: all over. it really depends on what specifically i'm looking for and like.... the size i need, etc. i get a god awful number of *really on point* fb ads for small clothing brands, plus i try and pick up shirts and such from indie artists where i can, plus a variety of fast/er fashion alternative brands, and thrifting. so much thrifting
however, i do have some pretty strict guidelines for what i will buy. ymmv on a lot of my specifics because a solid chunk of it is based off of how i like my clothes specifically to fit and everyone has their own jam, but the key things i think everyone should pay attention to are:
sizing/fit: do not compromise. there is some flexibility depending on the item and how willing you are to alter a thing, but it should always ALWAYS fit the way u like, or otherwise be comfortably tolerable in the ways it doesnt (sleeve length almost always gets me because i have very long arms, but i generally push my sleeves up anyway so its not a deal breaker, BUT the rise of my pants will absolute result in me never wearing them if it's not Right, hence ymmv)
everything you buy should either be immediately wearable in at least 3 full outfits from things you already own OR be a staple piece to build a new branch of outfit options off of that otherwise works with at least one key item already owned, like shoes
other things i really look at are under the cut cos it got long lmao
colour pallet (i own almost no bright colours; if there's colour, it is 80% of the time going to be pastel pink or lavender, though I've been branching out into brights and primary tones a little. i also own precisely Four brown items: two are CR merch, one is my vintage cat vest, and the fourth is a pair of absolutely gorgeous vintage boots that i got for hella cheap as a bootblacking restoration project)
cut/fit (depending on where i wanna present of the masc >< femme spectrum in that outfit; i like all my bottoms to sit on my (very high and narrow) waist, with skirts generally hitting at or below my knee and either very flared (circle or swing) or pleated. box cut "unisex" shirts should hit where the ball of my hips sit in my pelvis but femme cut shirts dont have to be that long they will be tucked in. i almost never wear something sleeveless, or if i do i wear a shirt under it, and the closest i get to a low cut shirt is shirts with keyholes, otherwise nothing lower than maybe an inch or two under my collarbone. my shoes are also generally high tops or boots and often have either a thick sole or a full out platform)
theme (this is how i wear really weird shit in very cohesive ways lmao; my tshirts are all generally ominous goth graphics OR cutesy kawaii vomit (or both lmao), patterns on my blouses and skirts (or pants, on the few patterned pants i have) are in similar veins (lotta halloween themes, lotta hearts) OR theyre very basic stripes/tartan that i mix and match with graphic shirts)
i also pay attention to quality as much as i can, and will absolutely not shop directly from the really aggressively fast fashion brands like shein, h&m, romwe, etc. they're always cut and made like shit and basically never look good on an actual person, but every now and then i'll find something cute in a thrift store that i can physically check for quality. vintage also tends to be better quality in general, especially if youre looking for natural fibers (the number of vintage silk dad shirts i own for summer is A Lot lmao), but can be cost and size prohibitive
aannnddddd some shops that i either routinely buy from or have been planning to buy from, for reference
"big" brands:
killstar, blackcraft clothing (generally traditional goth, better for straight sizes, decent quality for the price)
unique vintage, modcloth (vintage repro, both stockists for other vintage repro brands on top of selling their own things, generally pretty good quality across stocked and in house brands, most skirts and dresses have POCKETS, lotta killer sales, good size range)
smaller brands:
myviolet and foxblood (sibling companies run by the same people, myviolet is pastel kawaii stuff while foxblood is goth; they do sometimes carry the same cuts of things in different pallets. generally pretty good quality, does a lot of stuff in cotton or modal but not everything. size range is pretty stellar tho especially for a small brand)
disturbia clothing, straight to hell apparel (disturbia is more corporate goth leaning with a lot of business type wear in goth colors and patterns, straight to hell is very rockabilly leaning. both are pricey but their quality seems very sound (i have not bought from them though))
wicked clothing (sarcastic goth), two crow collective (chronically ill), thentvs (native american streetwear) (mostly tshirts, but really off beat ones. only bought from wicked clothing so far, just tryna decide how many more tshirts i need)
sleepy peach (retro repro but make it weird, lotta weird mens cardigans)
kei collective (stockist of a lot of indie designers in the western kawaii streetfashion scene, a wide variety of very cute to VERY WEIRD apparel and accessories)
die with your boots on (stockist, carries foxblood and a lot of other straight black goth basics. quality is on par with foxblood, size range can vary depending on brand, great place to peek for things like strangecvlt shoes or foxblood items that are out of stock on the main site)
art brands:
morning witchy (lot of botanical all over patterns on button up dad shirts, skirts, joggers, shorts, tshirts, and so on, with absolutely banger size range. gorgeous quality and absolutely beautiful designs. i want so many of their sweaters so bad)
stablercake (not specifically apparel focused but they do pretty frequent tshirt designs and theyre all great, ESPECIALLY if youre a furry. quality is always top tier unless its a bs manu error, in which case they typically offer a replacement or coupon when they find out something is fading weird, etc)
crescent creepers (weird goofy goth all over patterns, like 80s style cartoon bugs or deep sea creatures. sizing isnt great but if you're thinner, they have a lot of really fun overalls/shorteralls and button ups)
vetiver fox (very pretty goth patterns, has a lot of gorgeous swoopy skirts (with fuck off huge pockets) and some cool tank tops, is planning on maybe doing a run of regular tshirts too)
s2heart bunny (kawaii anime girl art shirts except soft and pretty and often sad or, as is the case with the ones i have, kawaii bunnies with nail bats and middle finger flags lmao)
egglien creations (weird bright very clowncore apparel, i have the cardigan from their collab with lulu van hoagland, who also does gorgeous work, just usually not apparel)
also a lot of the times, artists (especially tattoo artists) you follow will do tshirts and the like, which is where i get a lot of my really weird things
uuuuh yep thats it

I drew The Skeleton Tarot over two years and published it in 2017. Since then we have printed thousands of copies and sent them around the world. It's an indie deck; every single deck is printed in my hometown of Des Moines, Iowa and shipped out by my wife and I.
I am unbelievably grateful for the success of this project and for the fans of The Skeleton Tarot, especially the people who have shared about it, gifted it to others, or just sent me a note about the deck.
The deck is available in select boutiques nationwide (one day I really should start a Stockists page!) and always on my etsy.
About the back:
The back of the cards (pictured) was one of the last images I drew. It highlights the five major icons of the set: skulls (obvs), and the suits: knives, canes, coins, and mugs.
About the deck:
When I began drawing the set I chose these suits as they felt like personalizations of the generally-used suits of cups, pentacles, staffs or wands, and swords. Mugs because I love coffee, coins is just a friendlier term to me, knives felt like a tool I use every day, and at the time I was often using a cane as a mobility aid and I liked naming them in my deck.
The skeletons appear as a memento mori, a reminder of death in everyday life. They also show up as ancestors connecting you back to all who came before you. These may be blood ancestors or ancestors of your lineage: queer ancestors, forebears that share your work or calling, or ancestors who share your lived experience of race or religion.
The six fingered hands are a symbol of transformation or evolution, giving a little extra blessing to those readers who are using the deck as they seek personal or spiritual growth.
