Dearly Beloved,
If you are reading this article, it’s probably because you’re taking the time to start intentionally processing your trauma. I know the pathway to beginning a healing journey is often met with overwhelming confusion and too many starting points.
Perhaps in your search for a starting place, you found this guide nestled in a list of resources. Or maybe you weren’t looking, but saw this shared by friends online. However this reached you, I’m glad it did.
We have very few step-by-step guides to dealing with life after trauma, and my hope is to share wisdom around processing trauma through writing while also holding healthy boundaries and care techniques. I learned these tools while writing and editing my memoir, Trauma Queen, and working as a Project Advisor for Mirror Memoirs.
Feel free to keep what works for you, and change or discard what doesn’t.

Resisting Sterilization & Embracing Trans Motherhood- Luna Merbruja
The main message of "Resisting Sterilization & Embracing Trans Motherhood" by Luna Merbruja is embracing trans women and trans motherhood by resisting hegemonic medical practices that oppress the trans community. The part of the reading that caught my attention was when Luna went online to ask for advice on how to have a child while also transitioning with hormones. However, many trans people online relayed the message that to be "a woman," trans people need to undergo surgery. The advice was not helpful to her since these women had children before transitioning/coming out as trans women. Merbruja's investigation online caught my attention because I remember coming to terms with my sexuality and looking for advice online but being conflicted. After all, there were different ideas about "being queer."
This relates to present society because, in her reading, Merbruja explains the lack of research on trans reproductive rights and how that has affected her process of being a mother. There are more trans programs and support groups that help trans women with their process through motherhood. Additionally, the definition of motherhood is changing and expanding due to women of color and trans women of color. Motherhood is no longer defined by giving birth to a baby but captures so much more.

Who's In Our Book
Resilience stars a wide spectrum of contemporary (C)AMAB trans writers, each exploring different worlds across race, class, ability, and gender identity. We're proud to feature new work from over thirty authors, including  forty-one short stories, essays, and poems from so many of our friends (old and new). Our list of authors includes:
Luna Merbruja • KOKUMO • Magpie Leibowitz • Moss Angel • Joss Barton • Ariel Howland • Casey Plett • Sascha Hamilton • Sophia Quartz • A.K. Blue • Rahne Alexander • Tobi Hill-Meyer • Lawrence Walker • Connifer Candlewood • Serafima Mintz • Talia Johnson • Sugi Pyrrophyta • Oti Onum • Sara Oliver Wight • erica, inchoate • Lillita Lustre • Tyler Vile • Lina Corvus • Bridget Liang• CHRYSALISAMIDST • Ana Valens • Larissa Glasser • Lilith Dawn • AR Rushet • Boudicca Walsh • Rabbi Emily Aviva-Kapor • and an introduction by Julia Serano
“As far as we know, there hasn’t been an anthology specifically like this before,” said Executive Publisher and Resilience curator Amy Heart. “It is the book I needed as a young adult when I was desperately searching for answers about my identity as a trans woman. This anthology is going to change and save lives.”
Our Ask: The $6,000 Goal
While we are committed to bringing this project to print, our collective decided it was time to ask our beloved queer community to help offset some of the costs. The majority of our staff are currently living in poverty and we can't easily do this without you.
Here's what we'd like to do with your support:
Print a first run of Resilience and make it available to purchase here and everywhere.
Give an honorarium to each of our thirty-two writers involved in the project.
Pay our cover artist, Mia Rose Elbo, for her beautiful artwork.
Provide a stipend to our volunteer staff/editors for their time and effort in bringing Resilience to life.
Purchase multiple ISBNs for each edition of Resilience. We've got our ISBN for hardback, but we'd like to also expand distribution to paperback and the eBook/Kindle/iTunes Bookstore.
Give away copies of Resilience to our local libraries and to community members in need.
And if we go beyond our main goal, we can take Resilience on tour to key cities across the continent (like NYC, Portland, Atlanta, San Francisco, Baltimore, Toronto) so our writers can read their own work to you live!
Check out our website and learn more at heartsparkpress.com. You can also email us anytime at [email protected]. We'd love to hear from you!
Donate today and support transgender women and (C)AMAB non-binary literature! ttp://kck.st/2hlZOgY

How do you express intimacy? “Azúcar is an invitation into the everyday love of trans and queer people of color, upending traditional media representations of queerness through simple acts of intimacy and connection… Luna Merbruja’s wordless piece is refreshing both in its unabashed queerness and its attention to the ways in which intimacy can be both platonic and romantic.” (Review by Julia Berkman-Hill, Bowdoin ’17) #TransQueerLove #TransQueerBeauty #Merbruja #Platonic #Romantic #Azucar #QWOCFF2017 #Athabaskan #Trans #Intimacy #Love #TwoSpirit https://www.qwocmap.org/festival2017/azucar-2017/
