This tale starts on your first day of class where your new teacher decides the best way for you to fit in is to fight against the strongest person in your class: Bakugou Katsuki.
Warnings/Genre: This piece will feature some angst and reference to an abusive parent, if you are ever worried about other tw’s feel free to send me an ask and I will let you know. There will also be fluff, slight angst, pining, and slowburn.
A/N:  Usually, my chapters are ~5000 words, but this one is less than 3500. However, that is because I wanted to end the chapter here! I hope you guys enjoy some of this glorious fluff with a short explanation to the reader's backstory. There is more to come and unfortunately it with be rather angsty.
(series masterlist)
You didn’t know what to say and Aizawa didn’t expect you to say anything. He gave you a few moments for the concept to sink in and then he began speaking again.
“Your mother is already on a plane back to the United States. She is in contact with your siblings and even tried calling you a few times.” He paused, debating his next words carefully, “Our goal is to have him think you are still in America. Your family is arranging for there to be a record of you at your old school. Your mother left in hopes to convince your father that she rushed home for you.”
You nodded meekly. It’s not like anything will change if I speak up.
Aizawa sighed. “We are working on our end to get rid of your trace here, but we believe overall that it is safest for you to stay here on campus, surrounded by heroes. What this entails is that you will not be in the limelight at all. You will stay training under me, you will not go out on missions where the public can see you, and you will not participate in the sports festival.”
Aizawa sat down next to you, trying to be as considerate as possible in such a difficult situation.
All you wanted to do right now was call your mom and siblings. You wanted to hear their voices, hear the truth from them, and then have their soothing voices tell you it would all be okay.
“I’m sure you want to talk to your family right now,” Aizawa began as if he was the one who could read your mind, “But you can’t.” He once again rubbed his eyes in irritation at the problem. “If you call them, your number will show outgoing calls from Japan to the United States.”
“I understand,” You solemnly replied.
“However, tomorrow morning, I will be calling your mom with the intention to talk to her about the situation and missing class,” Aizawa explained. “Come to my office half an hour before class and you can talk to her.”
You nodded, trying to comprehend just how important and serious this topic was.
“I don’t expect you to be amazing in class,” Aizawa elaborated, “I know this is a tough situation. However,” He looked into your eyes, “I want you to be there and I want you to keep fighting for your hero education as this gets sorted out.”
You nodded.
Aizawa stood up. “Now, go to bed, get some rest.”
You nodded a final time. “Thank you,” Your meek voice responded, bowing slightly because you knew it was the polite thing to do. You made your way back to the dorm as Aizawa followed behind you.
When you entered, you saw Ashido and Kirishima now in the room with Bakugou, Kaminari, and Sero. However, no one else was there anymore. Briefly, you wondered if your friends, particularly Bakugou, yelled at everyone to get lost.
“Have a good night,” Aizawa said as he left you, closing the door behind him.
Frankly, all you wanted to do was go up to your room, sleep the night away, and talk to your mom in the morning. You hoped everyone could respect that.
Ashido was the first to approach you. They had all been sitting at the usual spot on the dining table. The load wooden chair creaked against the wooden floor, surely adding another scratch to the collection. She rushed over to you and pulled you in quickly for a hug.
It was brief, mainly because you didn’t hug the pink girl back, and she pulled away in concern.
She looked deep into your eyes, unsure what to say.
With the utmost concern and care she could muster, the girl simply asked, “Are you okay? Do you want to be alone?”
“I do,” You mumbled out quickly.
“Of course,” She immediately replied, turning to lead you up to the dorms. She was your escort, and she would make sure no one, not a single soul, bothered you.
As you walked, your eyes wandered to the group. Most of your friends were standing at the edge of the dining room, too scared to enter. Bakugou, on the other hand, stayed in his chair, his eyes never leaving yours.
He looked at you with a serious face and motioned for you to take out your earbud.
You listened and took out one.
Are you okay? You heard his thoughts, much more apparent than anyone else’s, ask.
Not wanting to lie to the blond, you shrugged. You didn’t want to hear anything else, especially because most people’s thoughts were focused on your own situation. You popped the earbud back in as your rounded the corner to the hallway that led to the elevator.
Time passed numbly as Ashido ushered you to your bedroom.
“I’m going to fill up your water and bring you a couple of granola bars in case you get hungry,” She paused to look at you, “Do you need anything else? I could wake you in the morning for class if you’re going.”
“No,” You smiled, “I appreciate you.”
“Of course.” Mina’s tone was much more calm than usual. “Even if I am asleep, feel free to text, call, or bang on my door till I wake up, okay?”
You laughed, “I will.”
Your door shut. You sat down. Minutes later you heard the clink of your water bottle be pressed against your door.
A vibration.
I left it outside your door <3
On your phone were multiple calls and texts. A few from your mom, a few from Aizawa, and a few from Momo and Iida, the class representatives.
You clicked on each, ridding yourself of the red notification bubble. Sighing, you got up to grab your water before going back to bed.
You snuggled yourself into the duvet and attempted to play some videos to distract yourself.
You felt tears prick your eyes multiple times through the night until you finally fell asleep.
~~
When you woke up, you were sweaty. You already had been, but this fresh sweat was most likely the result of a nightmare you already couldn’t remember. Your mouth was dry, and you immediately moved to grab your water. You gulped down half your water in only seconds, thankful that it was filled by Ashido.
It was still dark outside so you grabbed your phone to check the time.
2:19.
If anything you were only asleep for an hour. It had been difficult to fall asleep in the first place, but now it seemed you were being plagued with nightmares.
You pondered if it was better that you didn’t remember what you dreamt. Part of you wished you could.
You sighed into your empty room.
Knowing yourself, if you fell back asleep, you would have the same nightmare.
Maybe I can distract myself for a little bit and try to fall back asleep later.
You looked around your darkroom. But what to do?
Sighing, you stood up from your bed and began grabbing your toiletries. You were much too sweaty for your liking and assumed a nice shower would help calm you down.
Quietly, you slipped downstairs, not using the elevator because you knew it would ‘bing!’ when the doors opened and closed.
Thankfully, the living room and dining room were empty. Your bare feet padded against the hardwood as you made your way to the showers, trying to keep quiet in case anyone heard.
You entered the bathroom, lights switching on immediately due to the motion sensor, and placed your belongings onto the sink counter. You turned to one of the stalls and switched it on before returning to your belongings. As the water heated up, you grabbed your essentials and flung your towel across the tile walls that separated each shower stall. You took off your earbuds and placed them securely into a cloth pouch you attached to your basket.
You peaked around the room, ensuring no one was there, before quickly peeling off your sweaty clothes. You rushed to your stall, closing the curtain, and sighing into the security of a warm water stream.
You took your shower slowly.
You spent your time massaging your head as you applied shampoo. You exfoliated your legs carefully, getting every inch and letting your thoughts fall down the drain with the soapy water. Your mind was clear, and you numbly followed each step meticulously.
It was when you were just about to wash the conditioner out of your hair and get out of the shower that you heard the door click open.
Whoever entered, disturbing your peace, let their heavy toiletries basket fall onto the counter.
I can’t fucking believe it!
It was Bakugou.
Someone else is showering at this time when I wanted to be all alone.
You debated telling him it was you, curious to see if knowing it was you would ease his anger. However, he would also know you could hear his thoughts in these moments.
He turned on the shower that was two away from you. You heard him sigh and pictured the blond rubbing his eyes in frustration.
His thoughts flickered over multiple subjects in the span of seconds. With many people asleep, thoughts were quiet. Bakugou being so close made it easier for you to focus on his thoughts but did not stop your head from hurting slightly.
You weaved around his thoughts, pushing away the passive ones that were simply about turning on the shower, grabbing his shampoo, body wash, and conditioner, and entering the shower. You moved away from his frustration, searching for something more.
Y/N.
More.
Is she okay?
More.
I wonder if she was able to fall asleep.
More.
I wish I ignored stupid pink hair and just went to visit her.
Fuck.
“Bakugou.”
A wave of shock when through him. After a few swears within his head, he finally replied.
“Y/N.” A short pause, “Didn’t I tell you to call me Katsuki?” Another pause, “For practice, I mean.”
You chuckled, running your hair under the water. “No, Bakugou-san, I don’t think you ever did.”
“Tch.”
You heard him open a bottle.
“Well, you can,” He finally said, his voice annoyed, but his thoughts telling you it was a façade.
You didn’t bother replying. Instead, you turned off the water and ringed out what water you could from your hair.
“I’m fine by the way,” You said, interrupting the silence.
You could tell Bakugou wanted to ask some questions, but his thoughts were not directed to you. They were not specifically asking so you didn’t say anything.
You dried off your body and wrapped the large towel around your body before realizing you didn’t bring any spare clothes.
Even worse, you slipped your clothes off and just left them out there. At least, you were smart enough to throw them into your basket of toiletries. Despite that sliver, if silver lining, you still needed to wash your face, brush your teeth, and put some products into your hair. There was no way in hell you were going to put your sweaty clothes back on that you ran in.
Maybe if I work quickly… you reasoned as you secured your towel best you could and proceeded to the sink.
The silence allowed you to work quickly, washing your face and applying products to it while Bakugou simply showered, thinking about how to ask you whatever it is he wanted to ask.
“Can you still hear my thoughts?” He asked out of the blue. Or, at least, it would have been if you didn’t hear his thoughts prior.
“Yes,” You replied as you applied a heavy glob of rose water gel cream to your face and neck.
“Then why aren’t you answering my questions? I know you can hear them?” He inquired.
“Your thoughts are different when you are thinking them and actually talking to me,” You explained, moving on to rapidly put lotion on your exfoliated body. “I don’t answer because they aren’t for me.” You paused, unsure how to phrase this next part, “I don’t want to interfere with your thoughts, I just can’t wear my earbuds when I’m soaking wet.”
His water shut off.
His water shut off and you still had things to do.
You checked your towel, rolling the top over a few times for maximum security.
“You might as well just answer them,” He explained. His green towel disappeared, his hand swiftly grabbing it from the tile walls.
“I’d rather you ask me what you really want to know,” You shot back, “I am not inclined to explain a difficult situation to someone without enough balls to actually ask.”
You could hear Bakugou scoff at the comment.
“No offense,” You added.
A chuckle. “None taken.”
He opened his curtain and stepped out. The blond was wrapped in only a towel, much like yourself, except this one hardly clung to his hips.
You looked away, looked anywhere else, and kept working. Next, your hair.
“It’s fine, you can look,” He teased.
It was a bold comment, but you could tell he was nervous to say it and just as nervous to look at you.
“I could say the same thing,” You looked into his eyes, cautious of his expansive chest. You pointed at your head, “Remember?”
“Tch, how could I forget?” He said, meeting you at the large sinks.
“You should have brought clothes,” You said, continuing the conversation and purposefully moving it away from tonight’s events.
“I could say the same thing,” He repeated, mocking you.
You laughed lightly, “I thought I would be alone.”
“So did I!”
You paused, “Yeah, well I got some pretty bad news tonight so you can’t be angry at me.”
The conversation stopped. Bakugou was tentative to say anything.
“You want me to tell you that badly, huh?” You questioned, looking at him through the mirror.
“You don’t have to,” He quickly replied.
“I know.”
You were done. Teeth brushed. Face fresh with lotion. Hair oil on. You turned to lean against the counter and watched the blond as he brushed his own teeth. You folded your arms, more so for the security of your towel, and for the comfort it would provide you.
“And just so you know,” You began, “I’m not telling you this because I crave attention.”
Bakugou gave you a look, not bothering to reply.
You bit your lip debating where to start. As you thought, your eyes looked over Bakugou’s body, admiring his strict diet and workout regimen. It’s really doing him wonders.
You caught Katsuki’s eyes, and he smirked, knowing exactly what you were doing. He didn’t pressure you to start your story and instead simply looked back into the mirror.
“Anyways,” You began, “My dad broke out of prison and he’s probably going to come looking for me.” You wanted to tell this story quickly, much like how one would rip a band-aid off quickly. “My mom is going back to the United States, and I am staying here because it is safest. However, I can’t do certain things,” You paused, “Like compete in the sports festival, or call anyone.”
Bakugou looked at you, your story clearly processing in his mind. He opened his mouth but closed it after a few moments. You knew what he was going to say though.
I’m sorry you can’t compete in the sports festival.
Albeit a little off-topic, you could tell the comment was coming from a good place. He had been training with you for weeks now in preparation. He also knew that it would be your opportunity to get an internship. However, now there was no possibility of doing that.
After deciding not to say such an oblivious statement, he was unsure what to do.
“It’s fine,” You finally said. “You don’t need to console me of anything.” You sighed, “It’ll be tough, but they will eventually get him, and everything will go back to normal.”
An awkward silence filled the room. Although, it wasn’t silent for you. Bakugou’s mind rushed with thoughts, the most prevalent one being—
“Is he where you got your quirk from?” Bakugou asked.
“Yes,” You answered before adding, “But his abilities are much more fleshed out than mine. He is able to manipulate feelings so strongly, and for so long that it’s basically mind control.”
Not wanting to elaborate, or go into your family history anymore, you began packing up your belongings. Bakugou also seemed ready to go as he began doing the same things.
Motioning to the blond, you finally put your earbuds back in. “You’re free,” You joked, enjoying the silence.
Bakugou snorted through his nose and grabbed his things. He held the door open for you and you each made your way to the elevator. You pointed to the elevator and stairs, silently asking him which one he would rather take.
Bakugou answered by leading the way up the stairs, walking slow enough that you were still able to keep up.
“I’m glad I ran into you tonight,” Bakugou said, breaking the silence. His voice echoed through the hall, making your heart flutter. “I was really worried honestly,” He added, worsening your nerves and making your face heat up.
When you didn’t reply, the blond turned to look at you. He immediately saw your red face and began to get red himself. His lips formed a fine line as he tried to remain serious and not smile.
“Don’t look at me like that!” He exclaimed, turning back around, and speeding up.
“What do you expect me to do?” You replied, “You started it.”
Bakugou scoffed, opening the door to your floor. “Yeah, but I didn’t look at you like—” He wasn’t sure what to say and gestured at you— “That!”
“Like what?” You shot back as you each walked to your rooms.
“You know,” Bakugou grumbled, his face becoming even pinker than it already was.
“But what if I don’t?” You questioned.
“I know you know,” He said, looking at you finally. “Of course you know with how I’m reacting.” Bakugou scowled at you and pouted his lips. “I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”
You smiled brightly and the blond and nodded your head. “If it helps at all,” You began, “I’m glad I ran into you too.”
Bright red.
He was as red as his eyes.
You smiled even wider, happy to know you could make him react that way.
Before he could close himself away into his room, you decided to add insult to injury.
“It was also really reassuring having you with me when we first got back,” You paused, thinking about what to say. “It may be small, but you really helped me at that moment, especially when you moved me around.” Although you were doing this to get a reaction out of the blond, it was also an embarrassing moment for you. Neither of you was outright saying that you liked the other, but you were getting quite close to it. “I’m also really glad you yelled at everyone to leave so it wasn’t super crowded when I got back.” You thought for a moment, “At least I think you did.” A smile graced your face that would have anyone starstruck.
Bakugou stared at you like a deer in headlights. His eyes were wide, his face was red, and he could hardly move. It felt rather funny, each of you standing there in only a towel as you proclaim something so personal. Your arms held onto the top of your towel and Bakugou’s hung loosely by his hips.
For a moment, you imagined the garb falling off. It was a hilarious image and you knew the both of you would be nervous, but the way it hung really teased the idea of it.
It took a few moments, in which he stared directly at you, for him to regain his motor skills. With a ‘Wshh!’ of the door he was gone, tucked away in his small dorm.
You smiled to yourself, happy with how tonight played out. Even if your family was fighting for you, even if you had to fear your father showing up at any minute, it felt good to have a silly little high school romance. It made your life feel normal, it made your heartbeat incessantly, and it made you crave more time with the stubborn blond who stole your heart.
Once back in your room, you bit your bottom lip, trying to tame your smile. You change into some pajamas and make sure your alarm was set for the next day. You didn’t need to work out, but you needed to get to class early so you could talk to your mom. You were happy, really happy. Despite everything, your day was an overall great day and you knew it was all thanks to Bakugou.

Guardian Angel
Izuku Midoriya X Guardian angel reader
Edit 7/22/21: This was previously for an event with a user I no longer would like to be associated with. I will be keeping this up because it is my work and I own it, but I am no longer associating myself with that event host
spoiler warnings: Recent manga spoilers starting from around volume 26-present events, essentially the war arc and current events.
massive trigger warnings: Death, Intrusive thoughts, suicidal thoughts. If you are struggling with these, please seek help. Your life is valuable and precious, and there are so many amazing things worth seeing in this world, I promise.
Tumblr media
Life is very short. So short, in fact, that we rarely appreciate it while we have it. We get over 70 years of life, if we're lucky, and most of it isn't appreciated.
Izuku Midoriya knows better than anyone else in this world how precious a life is. He knows how important it is to make every moment count, to soak up every drop of emotion life has to offer. He only knows this in hindsight, of course. Because he had only 2 years with you before you died. And he didn't appreciate those 730 and some days enough.
You died because of him in some twisted away. There isn't a day he doesn't think about that. It plagues his mind in a twisted series of ideas. There was no real way he could have saved you, but he could have tried. If he could have traded your life for his, he would have in a heartbeat. You were all that was good in this world, all Midoriya did was cause problems.
If he was still at UA, he would do his morning jog to your grave to pay respects and eat breakfast with you like he used to. It was comforting, to think your spirit would be eating with him. He just missed you, really.
He just really missed you.
Of course, now nothing is normal. He isn't at UA. You would have chewed him out for dropping out. But, it was his fault you died so none of that mattered. It was his fault you and all of the class were in danger. Loosing you was the last straw. Loosing you was the thing that made Izuku Midoriya, the supposed "next number 1" become a run away hero. A vigilante. The kind of person society spits on. The kind of person you and him were supposed to protect everyone from. But, if he couldn't protect you, how could he protect anyone. He wasn't a hero, he was never supposed to be a hero anyways. He didn't deserve this fucking quirk anyways, not if he couldn't use it to save you.
He thought, maybe, just maybe, there was a way to fix it. Because, it was his fault you were dead, and you died because of the war started by All For One, and he is the one All For One is after in the end, so if he could kill All For One then he could fix it, and you could die in peace, and then all is well, he wouldn't be some stupid waste of a quirk.
But here he was, laying half dead in a street. He couldn't do it. He couldn't take down All For One. His eyes flickered shut, his body slipping in and out of consciousness. Parts of his life played over in his mind. He remembered the first time he saw All Might, playing with Kachan, when he received One for All, when he met you. God, that was comforting. There were so many good memories with you. The night you kissed him, the time you wore matching pajamas with him and his mom to watch an All Might documentary, the time you both fell asleep together in his dorm- the time he held your bleeding body as you took your final breaths, the time Iida had you pull him off your body because there was no time to grieve. There had never been time to grieve. He never would move on. Midoriya would always be stuck in denial. He would die here, never fulfilling his goal, never finding peace with your death.
And then it was white. He felt alive though, like he was in a white room. He looked around, wiggling his fingers in front of his eyes. He must have died, because this wasn't where he just was.
"You didn't die, 'zuku."
His head jolted up, knowing your voice anywhere. There you were in front of him, dressed beautifully in white.
"You just are stuck right now. But you didn't die."
"Its really you?" Midoriya scrambled to his feet, trying to run to you, but he couldn't move.
"I'm me, but I'm not real. I'm sorry."
"I miss you." tears brimmed in Midoriya's eyes. He always wondered what it would be like to see you again, what he would say. He had a whole monologue in his imagination, but in the moment he was speechless.
You smiled that same soft smile, the one that radiated more warmth than the sun could ever dream. "I miss you too, Izuku. We'll be together someday."
"Now. I want to be together now. Y/N, I can't stand living without you. I-I dont know what I'm doing anymore!"
You held his face in your hand. Your hands made his face feel warm, but you felt like nothing more than a warm breeze. "It's not your time yet. You'll find a reason to keep going without me."
Tears poured from his eyes, wetting his cheeks. "No, no, I want to die. I can't live anymore. There's no point in it. You aren't there and I'm never going to be a hero-"
"Shh, hush with all that." You brushed tears from his face. "You can't die, 'Zuku. I won't let you."
You leaned in closer to him, whispering into his ear. "I'm your guardian angel Izuku. I'm always with you, okay?"
Midoriya gasped for air, looking for the right words but falling short. You were his angel, his precious and beautiful angel.
"Keep on living, keep on saving people, okay?" You pulled back, looking into his eyes. He smiled, brushing past the last of his tears.
He nodded, "I promise."
The white walls around him started to fade, turning darker. Your glow started to dim. Midoriya grabbed at you hand in some attempt to pull you back, even if he knew it wasn't possible.
He called out your name one last time before it was black again, and he was back in a life without you. But now, he had a reason to keep going.

Tonight had been advertised as the night to end all nights— a masquerade ball held by the king at the palace, and a brightly lit ballroom decorated with gold and the continent's finest silk, adorning the kingdom's rose insignia. Entertainers and musicians positioned around the vicinity to perform their best acts and tunes, and the gates were left wide open to welcome everyone who wanted to join in, given that they tried their best to dress for the occasion.
Today was an event open to all the kingdom's citizens, from high seated nobles to common men by the streets, everyone was welcome to participate in the king's annual ball. However, that fact didn't matter for a family such as yours. Your father was the Marquess, which meant that you were invited to every single ball or gathering held by the nobility for the nobility. At least, that was how it had been until the incident.
The peering eyes of both the nobles and commoners alike have left you frozen on your spot by the pillar. Your bright red ball gown, although beautiful, was not helping you hide away from the eyes of the crowd. It was evident they were all thinking the same thing.
The unfortunate daughter of a fallen marquess.
News had gotten out about your family's crisis and had spread to the public like a disease. The Grand Marquess losing money, property, and power: The fall of a great noble. The story made headlines for weeks on end— rumors mixing in with the truth, and eventually, everyone had drawn the same conclusion. Pitiful.
You worry about your parents at the other end of the room, doing their best to mingle with the other nobles. The heavy atmosphere was weighing down on your chest.
Closing your eyes and taking a deep breath, you try to think of the things that calmed you down: the rustic smell of old books at the public library, the warm feeling you'd get when the rays of sunlight touch your skin as you sit by the window with your face buried deep into your favorite classic, the bright smile the common mage boy would give you everytime you crossed paths—
"Wow."
A familiar voice brings you back from your thoughts.
"You look incredible in that." The same bright smile you'd envisioned earlier now stood in front of you.
You gaze in awe at the man before you, dressed in what you could only describe as the most beautiful and elegant ensemble you'd seen tonight. The way the white suit hugged his waist left little room for the imagination. You doubt even the king himself could top this off.
"Lady Y/N. I believe fate must have brought us together in this fine evening." The man gently bends down, taking your hand and planting a kiss so fleeting that you barely felt it. Even with the golden mask on, you could easily tell who it was.
"Kai.."
"Ah, and here I was hoping I'd be a little more mysterious tonight." Kai holds back his laughter as he gazed upon you once more. You can't help but do the same.
Tonight, he looked nothing of a common mage but that of a king himself. If you hadn't known him beforehand, you would've mistaken him as so, especially with tonight's main event— the reveal of the king's successor. But alas, what the mage boy had going on for him was merely for appearances. A commoner like him could never be king in a world where even dreaming of becoming one was considered to be of highest absurdity.
"I thought you said you weren't attending?"
Kai shrugs, folding his hands behind his back. "And refuse my lady when you so graciously asked me out?"
His response catches you off guard. "I don't recall ever asking you anything of that sort."
"You asked if I'd attend."
"And that counts as asking you out?"
Kai chuckles. "When you asked me with such a cute look on your face, it was difficult to think you weren't looking forward to me being here."
And he was right. Given your circumstances, Kai being here with you was like a breath of fresh air. You'd been praying all night that he'd magically arrive to help you take your mind off of things, and you felt like crying out in joy when he actually did.
Kai looks around, seemingly getting a sense of the pressure you were in. "Shall we take a stroll around the garden, my lady?"
You follow his line of sight and spot the royal garden just outside the window. "I'll let you accompany me if you drop the whole my lady business."
Kai purses his lips as he takes your hand in his. "Can't you let me be fancy for one night?"
Every moment you'd spent with Kai up until this point had been the highlight of your days. As the daughter of the Marquess, you'd spent most of your time holed up inside your manor. Women barely got any education aside from the usual classes on manners and societal etiquette, and that included nobles as well. But that never stopped you. Once a week, when the guards changed shifts by the gate, and the maids and butlers were all busy with the weekly general cleaning, you'd take the opportunity to slip out in disguise, undetected by anyone. The main goal was to get to the public library and obtain access to educational material— ones that didn't involve any prim and proper rubbish that you've read over a thousand times.
The first time outside was rather difficult. You barely managed to get inside the library's more educational section while passing as a man. However, every succeeding attempt became easier and easier until coming out in secret and gaining access didn't seem like that much of a hassle anymore.
At the library, you were free to read any book you want, and used this opportunity to brush up on some business and economics as well as some of the basic sciences. You spent the first few months stocking up on knowledge until you felt it fine to relax a little and start reading novels to pass the time without the help of a disguise.
There was a section in the library that you hadn't checked; one that you'd deemed unnecessary as it only contained children's literature. It wasn't until you'd heard the sound of a man's voice followed by children's laughter that you felt compelled enough to take a peek.
"And then, the dragon swooped down onto the village and attacked the innocent villagers! ROARRR. Breathing fire as hot as, well, uh— FIRE!"
You slipped up and giggled at the young man's amusing narration, piping down a bit after realizing that he had noticed you from behind the shelves, throwing a knowing smirk your way.
It was then that he pulled down his cloak. Wavy brown locks gracefully reaching the back of his neck, bright eyes that could make any person let their guard down— he looked around your age which made you feel more at ease.
The young man steps back, dramatically breathing fire out of his mouth as the children cheered. Some were yelling at him to continue until only smoke came out, and you swore you heard one of them ask if he could make the fire turn green. Ridiculous, you think. But you were no different from these children, only being able to stand there in awe at the young man's trick. Perhaps turning the fire green wasn't such a terrible idea.
You've heard of mages among the commoners before, and had met a few that visited your manor but this was the first time you'd seen one in action. The flames that came out of his mouth looked awfully hot but the young man didn't even blink or showed any signs of pain.
He stops the fire and clears his throat, now kneeling down to face the children. "The villagers were worried sick! What would happen to their crops, their produce, their livelihood? If only a hero would come along and save them!" He makes an overly exaggerated wail before gasping.
"Well, who do we have here? A warrior has come to save the villagers!" The young man points at your direction and you feel your blood run cold as all the children in the room had turned their attention towards you, hopeful.
"A young maiden has arrived to slay the evil dragon!"
You quickly shake your head at his statement, holding your arms out in a cross. "No, kids. Don't believe what this man says. I am not a warrior, and I'm certainly not here to slay any dragons"
The young man raises a brow, getting up from his spot. "Then why do you have the magical sword that was forged to slay the mighty dragon?"
"What sword?"
The young man snaps his fingers. "That sword."
The weight on your hips dip on one side and you couldn't believe your eyes as a sheathed sword had magically manifested beside your waist out of thin air. "How did you— wait, is this a real sword?! You can't play around with real swords in front of children!"
The children turn towards the young man in confusion.
"Well, kids. Do you want the kind lady to slay the dragon with a real sword?"
"YES!" The children cheered.
The young man turns to you with a smile. "You gotta give the kids what they want, Miss."
An exasperated expression makes its way to your face. "I am not slaying any made up dragons!"
"Now, what's all this talk about slaying dragons?"
Taehyun, one of the stricter librarians, had come out of nowhere, surprising everyone. His eyes scan the room and quickly notices three things: (1) the dangerous sword hanging on your waist, (2) the excessive amount of children in the room when the sign on the way in definitely mentioned a capacity of only five, and (3) someone let the mage boy inside the library again. The culprit was evident.
"Jung Kai, I swear to the heavens I will—"
"Alright kids, time to go! We'll end the story next time!" The young man, Kai, rushes the disappointed children out of the section before they heard something they shouldn't.
You were about to walk away yourself but was quickly stopped by Taehyun's hand blocking your path. "Kai, didn't I tell you that you're not allowed to perform magic inside the library? And seriously," He confiscates the sword on your waist, holding it up in the air. "Violence?"
Kai looks at you and grins. "I suppose we could've gone with a more romantic ending. Something like the warrior's kiss saving the dragon from his curse, and he turns back into this super handsome, super cute, and super macho mage."
The way he shamelessly described himself left you speechless, and you steal a glance at the librarian who looked as equally disgusted as you are.
"Just clean up the mess before you leave. And that means you too, Miss Dragon Slayer."
"But I didn't even—" You cut yourself off after Taehyun dismisses himself from the room.
The section falls silent and Kai walks up to you, a smile ever present in his face. "I'm guessing this is the start of our new friendship?"
And that was what started it all. Everytime you'd visit the library after that, you seemed to bump into Kai more often than you liked. He saw through the disguise the first time he saw you wearing it and had promised to not utter a single word to anyone. The mage boy was much more reliable than he seemed to be, often helping you in your studies and teaching you more than the books ever could. Sometimes, he'd convince you to take a stroll around town and had shown you sights and wonders you wouldn't have expected to see inside the kingdom.
Before you knew it, Kai had become someone you'd cherished, and someone whose company you genuinely appreciated. He was patient and understanding as your makeshift mentor, and was this fun and outgoing guy whenever you two were out together. Kai became the first friend you'd made on your own regardless of status and the only friend you wished to keep by your side.
"I take it that the people in the ballroom were too much?" Kai speaks the moment arrived at the garden.
"Please. I couldn't even breathe in there." You play it off with a chuckle but thoughts of worry still plague your mind. "I'm guessing you probably know by now."
"About what? The fact that you're the daughter of the Marquess or that the Marquess has been in a crisis for a while?"
"Both."
Kai reaches for your hand, holding it reassuringly. "I've known for a while but that doesn't change anything now, does it? We became friends without the burden of our status, and we'll stay as friends regardless."
You hated this, hated how he always knew exactly what to say. The heat rushes up to your face and you squeeze his hand tighter, avoiding eye contact. "Thank you."
But truthfully, there was a little voice in Kai's head that wished you could be something more. Not after you'd shared those intimate moments alone at the library at dusk, not after he rushed in to catch you in his arms when you fell while shelving a book on the top shelves, and especially not after you almost shared a kiss after saying goodbye that night he'd helped you sneak back in.
Even now, as he lovingly gazed at your silhouette beneath the moonlight, he'd hoped that he'd have the chance to tell you how he felt. But then again, the chance could be right now at this very moment. The two of you were, afterall, at the king's ball.
"So, how were the gentlemen earlier?"
"What?" You raise your head to face Kai.
"I've no doubt that hundreds of people had been lining up to dance with you all evening." Kai grins as he gently lets go of your hand.
"Please, I haven't danced at all tonight."
"I find that quite hard to believe."
You sigh, recalling the events from earlier. "No one would want to be seen dancing with a fallen Marquess' daughter now would they?"
"Not when you look this beautiful?" Kai jokingly walks around you and you shy away from his gaze.
"You know I never say things I don't mean, Y/N." Kai bends down and holds your hands in his. "And believe me, I don't think anyone could ever be as lovely as you."
"Is flattery your main personality trait now?" You say as an attempt to not let his compliment affect you any further than it should but fail miserably so.
Kai stands before you with an unreadable expression. You'd argue this was the most serious look he's ever had since you'd met him.
"Care to dance?" Kai asks, leaning in closer, your faces merely inches apart. You feel your heart beating loudly in your chest, and you're almost afraid he might hear.
The moonlight casts a shadow on Kai's face, and despite the darkness, his eyes glistened, reflecting your own as you stared into his. You've never seen anyone look so beautiful. And here he was, telling you that you're the loveliest person he's ever known.
"Right now?"
Kai nods, taking off his mask and tossing it over to the side. "And I'd like it if we could dance without our masks too. I've been wanting to get a good look at your face all night."
You chuckle, removing your mask and tossing it to to the ground next to his. "And how do you suppose we dance without music? My reputation's already dirt at this point and I do not want to be branded as the crazy noble dancing at the royal garden in complete silence."
Kai fails to suppress his laughter, holding on to your shoulder to maintain himself upright. "Well, I wouldn't want to let my dear lady look crazy now would I?"
"And what are you planning to do?"
"Well, I am a mage." Kai smirks as he manifests a scepter out of thin air, leaving a trail of golden dust flurrying down.
This was the first time you've ever seen it in person. Kai had mentioned how he needed the aid of his scepter to perform high level magic, but he'd never taken it out in front of you until now. One look at the scepter and anyone could tell not just any old mage owned the darn thing. It looked majestic by all means, intricately decorated with gold and topped off with a brightly colored red gemstone you couldn't seem to identify. You'd heard that mages often created their own unique gemstones as a manifestation of their mana but for Kai's to be red, which had been said to be a quite powerful variant, made you wonder just how powerful your friend had been.
"And here we go." Kai takes the scepter in his hand and drives it into the ground. The impact causes a wave of light to burst from the scepter and spread throughout the reaches of garden. In a split-second, the wave of light rushes back into its source, compressing into a huge orb of light lifting up into the sky, rivaling the moon with its glow. The orb splits into smaller pieces and starts to dance around the garden, leaving you in awe at the spectacle.
Kai finds himself grinning from ear to ear at your reaction. He'd studied magic as an expression of rebellion against his father but now, he'd found another purpose to perform these little tricks of his. He places his hand on your waist and pulls you closer. "Wait for it."
The orbs of light find their places around you, slowly taking the shape of various instruments you've seen inside the ballroom, from strings to percussions, and even wind instruments. Smaller pieces of light continued to hover the surroundings, resembling glowing fireflies in the dark.
"Kai, this is beautiful." You look up at the young man, and he steps away, bowing his head as he plants yet another kiss on the back of your hand.
"May I have this dance?"
His eyes meet yours and you feel your heart skip a beat. It was rather difficult to explain. The Kai in front of you right now had been the same Kai you've always known, but somehow.. different.
You raise your hand for him to take, guiding your other hand to find perch on his shoulder, and his finding its place on your waist. With the first step, the instruments started playing. It's a piece you've heard before, one that Kai had fondly hummed nearly everytime you were together at the library.
It was as if the world had faded into the distance, and at this moment, there was only you and him, dancing alone in the garden. He pulls you close, his hold gentle and warm. Kai spins you around. The heel of your shoe collides with a rock, and you nearly stumble back until Kai manages to grab you by the waist on time, pulling you back into his arms.
You spot the smirk on his face under the moonlight, and you press a finger against his lips. "Not one word."
"I wasn't going to say anything." Kai lets you go, and you quickly grab a hold of his arms to find balance.
"Of course you weren't."
"Well, I do have something I have to tell you. A few things, actually."
You cock a brow at him, and he steps forward. "I'll tell you the most important part first."
"And that is?"
Kai reaches out to cup your cheeks, gazing into your eyes as if asking permission. You didn't need to say anything for him to understand, and he closes the gap between you, pressing his lips against yours. The feeling was foreign but certainly welcome, and you soon close your eyes and reciprocate, wanting to feel more of his soft lips, and wanting to hold him closer and closer.
For long had you held out on this, on actually acknowledging your growing feelings for the lad in fear of having to live with the thought of him not feeling the same. But in this moment, you felt a heavy burden being lifted from your shoulders.
"Kai, I.."
The light from the orbs dim down and soon dissipates. Kai pulls away, gazing upon your flushed face. "You mean the world to me, Y/N. I don't think my life would ever be the same without you."
The trumpets blare in the ballroom, a signal that the new king was to make an appearance soon. You feel Kai's hand around yours. "As for my other confession, I think it's best we head back first."
He leads you back into the ballroom, and disappears the moment you find your parents in the crowd. You join them in the center as everyone gathers to get a glimpse at the new king.
The herald makes his way beside the grand staircase, straightening himself up to make the announcement that every citizen had been waiting to hear all evening.
"Presenting the next in line to the throne, to rule the vast lands of our esteemed nation, and lead us into a continuing era of prosperity! Our future King, His Royal Highness, Kai Kamal Huening!"
The doors open, revealing Kai, your Kai, adorned in the royal family's crest, robes, and jewelries as he made himself known to his loyal subjects.
Behind him was public librarian, Kang Taehyun, who had been revealed to be serving as one oc the King's advisors, and now, for the new monarch.
"Long live the King!"
Kai could pick out your from the crowd in a heartbeat, hos gaze meeting yours as he flashes you his signature smile. You couldn't believe what was happening— Kai, your best friend in the whole world, had just confessed his love to you. And now, that same Kai had revealed to you and to the public that he had been the future ruler of the country all along. The crowds cheered.
"Long live the King!"
"Long live the King." You whisper to yourself, wondering what the future has in store for you.

Driving Me Mad [G.W] - Part 3
Series Description: You and George come up with a plan to pretend to date each other. But what happens when you actually start to catch feelings...
Pairing: George Weasley x Gryffindor fem!reader
Word Count: 1.9k
Part 1
Part 2
Description: George joins you for breakfast and dazzles all of your friends.                                                           X
Breakfast was awful. At this point, everyone knew about your split with Roger. And it seemed like everyone was studying you to see how you were handling it, but you wouldn’t give them the satisfaction. You had breakfast with Cho and Marietta at the Ravenclaw table and they were doing their best to comfort you, which wasn’t very effective. They made meaningless conversation at breakfast while you sat there and nibbled on your toast.
You caught George’s eye across the hall and he gave you one of his infamous grins. You shook your head and smiled at the prospect of this scheme actually working. In all honesty, you were more excited to shock people than anything. It was kind of exciting to know that soon enough you would be the latest gossip of Hogwarts, topping Roger and Fleur. You made eye contact with George again and he tilted his head up in a head nod, signaling you should come over. You quickly excused yourself from your friends without many words and walked over to where George was sitting with Fred and Lee.
“Morning boys,” you said sitting down across from George.
“Hey Y/N,” George smiled at you. Fred and Lee exchanged quick confused looks before greeting you. You sipped on your cup of tea as they continued eating.
“Okay, I’m going to say it. Is there a reason you’re here?” Lee asked.
“Not that we don’t love your company. It’s just…different,” Fred added.
“I don’t really know. I just needed a change of scenery from my usual crowd and I haven’t hung out with you guys in a while. Plus George and I bonded during our detention so I figured I’d say hi.”
“Ah, makes sense.”
“How’s the break up going?” Lee asked.
“Ugh, what a headache. I feel like I can’t go anywhere without people whispering about me. It doesn’t help that he’s prancing around with the perfect Fleur Delacour all the time. Very classy on his part.”
“Sorry to hear that,” George said.
“It’s fine, I can handle it. But how’ve you all been? Still getting into trouble?”
“Did you really just ask that?” Fred countered.
“Cut me some slack, okay! I’m trying to be personable. We haven’t talked or hung out in a while so I’m taking things slow.”
“Y/N, I’ve known you for 15 years and you’ve never been one to take anything slow,” Fred pointed out.
“Should I just skip to the personal questions then?” you joked. They all lightly chuckled and you were happy you could make the jokers laugh. You glanced at the clock and noticed it was time to finish up breakfast. You had just about finished your grapefruit and you saw George was finished while Fred and Lee still had some food on their plate.
“You finished?” you asked George. He glanced down at his plate and nodded. “Want to walk me to class?” you smiled and gave him a wink. This was the first step to reaching your end goal.
“Uh, sure.” His acting skills were perfect.
“What about us mate? Just gonna leave us here?” Lee said.
“Sorry boys. If you’re lucky one of you can escort me tomorrow,” you said with a wink..
“Tomorrow? You’re coming back tomorrow?”
“Play your cards right and I might be here all week.” You stood up from the table and walked away as George did the same on the opposite side of the table.
“God, that was brilliant,” George said as you met at the end of the table.
“Yeah? Like things never changed?”
“Exactly like that. You’re one of the few people who can dish it back to Fred.”
“What can I say, I’ve basically been doing it my whole life.”
“It’s a good thing you fit in with them so easily. I imagine you’ll be spending a lot more time with Fred and Lee over the next few weeks.”
“Yeah, you’re right. But you’ll be spending some time with my friends too. I’ll try to keep it to the minimum since I know they can be a lot to handle, but we do need to make this believable.”
“So when do I get the big introduction?”
“Soon enough. Let’s just take things a day at a time.”
                                                          X
“Alright mate, spill it,” Fred said to George, as he turned in for bed. They were just out in the common room, casually chatting with you as you attempted to get some homework done. Fred had left shortly after but George stayed and spent more time with you. Part of it was for this whole show you were putting on but he also genuinely liked spending time with you. It had been such a long time since you acted like friends and he forgot how great that felt.
“What are you talking about?”
“Bloody hell, how dim do you think I am,” he said, hitting George’s arm with an outdated Daily Prophet that was rolled up. George merely shrugged and Fred added, “Since when do you hang out with Y/N?”
“Dunno…we sort of just reconnected recently. We spent hours together polishing trophies. It just gave us an opportunity to catch up.”
“George, don’t go down that road.”
“What?” he said, nonchalantly.
“It’s no secret that you’ve had a crush on her forever. And now she’s single and she’s suddenly taken an interest in you. If you even entertain this possibility, she’ll break your heart and I can’t let that happen to you. She’s bad news mate.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“She’s just looking for a rebound after Davies left her. You are a good person and you deserve better than that.”
“Fred, she’s been our friend for 15 years. If something was going to happen between us, it would’ve happened by now. But I’m not going to stop spending time with her.”
“Whatever you say. But just remember I told you so.” He jumped into his bed and turned off the light to get some sleep.
His doubt hurt. It hurt George that he didn’t see the good in you. And George didn’t appreciate the attack. Fred was so quick to assume he would fall under your spell that he couldn’t even entertain the fact that George might just want to be friends with you. It made him nervous for how Fred would react once you started “dating.” He thought about telling Fred about the plan but he didn’t think his reaction would be much better. It was hard to lie to him but you were adamant about keeping everything a secret. He would just have to wait until everything was said and done.
George tucked himself in bed and tried to sleep, without much success. He had so many different thoughts whizzing around his head. He felt like things with you were good but Fred’s comments made him nervous. It’s not that it created doubt in his mind because he trusted you, but it gave him some more to think about. Fred was right in that he’s always had a crush on you. It was a passive crush, but present nonetheless. He liked spending time with you and that was all that mattered.
                                                             X
“Hey you! Heading to breakfast?” you caught George just as he was leaving the common room.
“That is the plan.”
“Wanna eat with me and my friends today? No pressure if you don’t want to, just thought I’d throw the offer out there.”
“Uh, maybe…” he answered vaguely.
“Hey, no need to let me down easy. I can handle a declined offer.”
“Maybe isn’t no.”
“I mean, it sort of is. But seriously, it’s cool. We’ll catch up later.” You parted ways as you found a seat at the Ravenclaw table. Instead of facing the Gryffindor table like you usually did, you sat on the other side of the table today. You didn’t need to see George planning pranks with Fred and Lee. You were fine with him sitting with them, but you knew if you watched them you would become distracted, thinking about how exactly you would pull this scheme off.
Cho and Marietta greeted you and you all chatted casually. Soon Cormac, Blaise and Cedric joined the table and the girl talk ended abruptly.
“So Y/N, how’s the break up treating you?” Cedric piped up. The entire group turned to catch a peek at Roger and the flawless Fleur, cuddling up over breakfast, whispering sweet nothings.
“Eh, obviously not ideal but I’ll be fine soon enough. I just wish they’d be a little more discreet about it.”
“I’m sure it’s not intentional. Fleur doesn’t seem to do anything discreet,” Cedric said.
“I’m just surprised you haven’t found a new boyfriend yet,” Cormac commented.
“Careful mate. You may have spoken too soon,” Blaise said with a head nod in your direction. Everyone turned towards you and you followed their gazes, looking down the hall. A tall ginger made his way toward the table and gave you a playful smirk.
“Is this seat taken?” he said to you. You gave him a smile and replied, “It’s all yours.”
You turned back to the group to see delightfully surprised faces. As their conversations continued, you felt him lean close in and say, “See, maybe doesn’t always mean no…”
You hadn’t really thought that much about how George would assimilate into your group of friends, but it turned out you didn’t have to. It was effortless. He was cracking jokes and making fun of the guys while impressing the girls with his charming nature. You had to say it was quite impressive. Soon the table dissolved as everyone gathered their things for class. George received a few pats on the back as the guys left and some smiles from the girls. Soon you two were left on your own and you were speechless.
“What just happened?” you managed to spit out.
“What d’you mean?”
“You just came over here and charmed all of them into loving you all while I didn’t have to lift a finger.”
“Didn’t think I could socialize, eh? Planning to hold my hand and guide me through the first introductions?”
“I…I just didn’t expect that. Is that why you didn’t give me a straight answer? You wanted to come over here and surprise me?”
“Truthfully I hadn’t planned on doing that. I sat down with Fred and Lee this morning and it was just like every other morning. And I wanted a change, so I came to eat with you and your friends.”
“What did you think of them?”
“They aren’t as bad as I expected. In fact they’re rather entertaining.”
“Well I think they loved you. Now I just have to work on getting in with Fred and Lee.”
“Fred and Lee like you!” he spoke, perhaps too quickly.
“You know, you really aren’t a good liar.”
George went to defend the accusation when you interrupted him, “I’m not dim. I know that I’m gonna have to work a little harder to charm the two of them. I’ve been out of the picture for so long it’s going to take time. But, I’ve known them forever so I hope they’ll warm up to me.”
“We’ll work on it. I’ll try and talk to Fred. I think things would really be easier if I could just tell him.”
“I know that you don’t want to keep secrets from him but I think telling him is too risky. I want things to appear natural and in a way, I think Fred’s feelings towards me helps our case a little bit.”
“Yeah, I understand. Whatever you think is best.”
“Regardless, good work today. Let’s go to class.”

Tom Riddle's Moodboard
Main Character's Moodboard
~////////////////𓆙////////////////~
1940 - 3rd year
There’s no chance of getting out of this. Our mentor must be out of their mind. No smooth sailing this period, not for me. Nothing at all has prepared me for this point in time.
My heartbeat rises by the second. At the brink of jumping out of my chest. I constantly try to reassure myself as I prepare. Forcing the illusion that I have everything together.
I most definitely don’t have anything, not a crumb, together.
My hands sweat with anticipation, my wand almost slipping off multiple times. The magical stick even wants to run away from this situation. I’ll start running with it soon enough.
The whole room is quiet in expectation. The tension levels in this area are too high for me to even start to comprehend. All I can hear is the sounds of my breathing and the occasional ruffle of robes. The high regard these people hold for me isn’t doing me any favors. I’m about to ruin any confidence anyone holds in my skills.
My friends are holding their thumbs up for encouragement. It does little to calm my panic, but I appreciate the effort anyway. Other acquaintances from the same house nodded their heads in an attempt to console my emotions.
Before the teacher signals to start, he gives us a bit to come up with a plan. Ten seconds at most. Now, this isn’t something possible to win. Not against him, no. My only goal here is to last as long as I can and don’t mess up.
Act smart, seem like you know more than you do.
He looks as easy-going as ever. This may seem like a walk in the gardens to him. No “threat” whatsoever to make him feel uneasy. I’m quite irritated at the thought of being anything but a challenge. He may be a little right, but that doesn’t help my ego.
Easy, I’m nothing easy.
Riddle might be stronger at this, but that doesn’t mean I'm complete garbage. I can hold my own, I will hold my own.
My breathing patterns change into more of a deep inhale and exhale. Focusing on completely dropping my heart rate and keeping my thoughts intact. Madam Rose, the school nurse, hates seeing me walk in there. Frequent visits from dealing with plants has her hair getting pulled out. I don’t think Miss Rose would be too keen on me passing out from the lack of oxygen.
“Only stick with the one basic spell of force. For both offensive and defensive tactics.”
Riddle’s atmosphere surrounding him is focused, deadly. He hasn’t moved his gaze from my lips. Probably on guard for whenever I cast something. I’m slightly unsteady on my feet from nerves. It’s almost suffocating being under all these watchful eyes.
A snake takes their time to strike. They examine all angles where you may be weak. Testing the vulnerability of your actions and thinking process. A few testing snaps of their mouth can tell them how the fight will go. They are well-balanced and focused, masters of intimidation.
Breathing.
Oxygen informs the snake how much you’re able to hold on for. The more you intake, the tighter it gets. Restricting the amount of oxygen the prey respires. Until they are physically unable to anymore, slowly weakening. The fight they were presenting lessens to almost non-distinguishable. The prey’s struggling to get free, dying down. Then it passes away, openly given to the snake without any more thought. A mere temporary meal in its eyes.
“Begin.”
Our eye contact is steady, neither of us moving an inch. Our mouths are closed shut, wands at the ready. I slightly squint my eyes while I focus. If he’s waiting for me to go first he is out of luck. I’m not budging, we will stay in the same position until next period if we have to.
Riddle also slightly squints his eyes. His hand doesn’t shake even if his wand was out in the air for a long time. The arm he holds out is steady and unmoving. Nothing triggers my attention since his movements are of little importance. I search his eyes for any life, no emotion is found swirling in those charcoal black eyes. Absolutely brilliant and fierce when focused or aggravated. The class starts getting rowdy, finally allowed to talk since Riddle just made the first move.
There’s only one spell I need to remember, that makes it a little easier to think of ways to find my opening. I quickly revert the spell away from me and send it right back. A tennis match is played between that one spell. Tom huffs and sends his enchantment straight towards the ground. It bursts into tiny magical specks of green. During that time I sent a spell his way.
After a while, I start to notice right before he casts a spell he moves his mouth like he inhales to take a breath. I’ve noticed him do it quite often. Since he casts fairly quickly there wasn’t much to go off of. Not much to use to my advantage. When he “inhales” he’s most of the time not actually breathing in air. It’s just a simple movement he does. It might be because of his accent, the way he learned to talk. Quite a small little quirk of the lips.
To start testing out this theory I centered most of my attention on his mouth. Waiting to see if my theory was reliable enough to depend on. He’s starting to gain more offensive attacks on me. Most of my spells undecidedly move more defensive by the minute.
Right before he mutters the words, I send a spell of my own. The magic aiming for his knees. Before he could defend himself from that one I prepared another offensive conjuration to his wand. He forwarded an incantation my way and I hurriedly obviated the sorcery as it was also heading to my stifle joint. Some of the force still slightly makes contact with my left knee. My balance is suddenly thrown off.
As I scramble to catch my footing, Riddle with point accuracy parries my wand attack. Then diverts my knee attack towards my right knee. Since I was focused on stabilizing my posture I didn’t notice the spell approaching my other knee
Forthcoming my inevitable demise.
I end up planting both hands on the ground. My knees falling one after the other from the pressure.
Our audience starts yelling complaints and praise. Calls for a rematch and cheats. My loss was bound to happen, but I did get to do that three combo. Two offensive and one defensive, all in the span of 5 seconds. Not too bad if I say so myself.
“Mr. Riddle wins this duel. Excellent job to the both of you. A very good strategy was well thought out for each side.”
I make my way down the steps on my platform’s side. Immediately being greeted by hugs and pats on the back.
At least my feet didn’t get tied together from restlessness causing me to fall and he wins the duel immediately. I would have dropped out right then and there from embarrassment.
There’s barely any feedback for Riddle, his little posse praising him like a king. People either saw no fault in him or were too frightened to actually comment on it publicly.
For me, that’s another case. Quite a bit of suggestions are offered, keep my form ready and my attention on more than one thing. Any and all advice is welcomed. Who knows how it can help me one day.
Amelia hugs my side with the biggest grin on her face, “You did so well! I think he actually had to work a little for that win.”
Everyone is dismissed and we head our way to Herbology. Tom’s face looks as if he’s already forgotten about the duel. His body language remains tranquil as ever.

Bubotuber pus, one of the grossest things I’ve had the misfortune of learning at home. Now I have to live through it again? How can one endure harvesting the essence?
“All of you are required to wear gloves for today’s class. Does anyone know what effects you would have when touching this substance with your bare skin?”
Quite a number of students raise their hands. I’m guessing they did research on why they needed to buy these gloves when handed the school procurement catalog.
Exactly what I did, curiosity might actually kill the cat.
“Yes, you sweet girl,” she picks, “What’s your name?”
“Merlene,” the student answers, “If you touch this without protection then extremely painful boils will appear in its stead.”
“Correct! 5 points to Hufflepuff,” she claps.
My fingers already lay inside the dragon-hide gloves. Its rough texture rubs against the calluses from dealing with the harsh stems of different plants.
This substance is usually processed to be used for acne treatments. Only touched in its weakened state. Oddly satisfying to some, I am not a part of that group of people
“This is disgusting,” I say as I harvest the pus. My gagging reflexes acting up every time the plant gets squeezed.
A few students chuckle at my remark. They seem to be having a good time, weirdly focused on this substance. It smells of petrol, not a big fan of the scent. Reminds me of the sketchy gas stations my parents and I would take on family road trips.
Its thick goo is finally contained in bottles. Relief washes over me from finishing the collecting process. My gloves are removed and I do a quick spell to clean my area. Nothing really fell on it so it didn’t need scrubbing beforehand.
Amelia seems to just be finishing her plant. A lot of goo splashed all over her table. Luckily it doesn’t seem like any of that touched anyone’s face or uncovered arms.
“I’m just about done, can you help with cleaning please?” Amelia starts collecting all of her bottles into her arms. None of the glass vials touched in green gunk.
“Yeah, I got you, turn those in to the professor.” I immediately started helping her out. In that process, I also cleaned other’s messes too. Why not, there is still time to waste until we can all leave. Cleaning products smell better than whatever chemicals intoxicate the air.
“Pop quiz, shout out the answers. Why not use spells instead of treated bubotuber pus for treatments?”
Easy question, I whisper the answer in Amelia’s ear when she comes back from turning in the assignment so she can shout it.
“Using spells proves to be too risky, like the Eloise Midgen incident,” she answers.
Good, she remembers Eloise's event.
“Yeah, she cursed her nose off, poofed from existence,” a girl from Hufflepuff adds.
“Precisely, everyone has permission to leave now,” the professor exclaims, “don’t head out without cleaning or I’ll reduct points. Last time a student got boils all over their hand from an improperly cleaned station.”
~////////////////𓆙////////////////~
“It actually went decently. Nothing blew up, surprisingly.”
At lunch, we are all talking about our first three classes. Potions being our first topic.
“Thought as much, I saw your stupid grin. You looked like you just won the wizarding lottery,” I say with my mouth stuffed with food. Hoping they could understand me between my chews.
“Both of you, slow down. The food ain’t going anywhere damn,” Devyn laughs.
Amelia and I pause, we look at each other, then at Devyn, then back to us. After a silent halt in our actions, we continue to shove down a bunch of food.
“I noticed you kept gagging at the pus. You looked queasy, your face was so pale.”
I audibly shiver at the recollection of said class. My eyes were watering so bad there. That stuff would never stop coming.
“I’m eating, stop mentioning that nasty stuff,” Amelia starts shaking her head. If only I could see the thoughts forcefully being shaken out of her head.
“You should have seen her station. That stuff was everywhere. How bad is your aim, the opening to the bottle wasn’t that small?”
“It wasn’t even that!” she drops her fork, “I squeezed that bloody plant too hard and it squirted everywhere!”
“Poor choice of words,” Devyn snickers. All she gets is a shove from me.
“Get your mind out of the gutter, she’s clearly traumatized.”
Devyn shoves me back, “You’re clearly traumatized from the duel. The one you failed at, the one-”
“I’m aware of the duel you’re talking about,” I interrupt, “I bet you wouldn’t have lasted as long as I did.”
“Oh please, you’re just salty about losing.”
I roll my eyes and subconsciously scan the room for him. There he is, mysteriously talking to his group of buddies. After a little bit, he catches onto my staring. He briefly looked around him to see if I was looking at something else. Finally, he comes to the realization it was in fact him I was blessing with my attention.
During this, he was talking to his friend next to him. He stopped his conversation to completely give me his attention. The guy he was just talking to engaged in another conversation quickly.
The moment was interrupted with hands waving in front of my face, “You gonna eat that?”
“Nah I’m full, go ahead.”
Riddle continued on with his food. Never looking my way again.
~////////////////𓆙////////////////~
“Hey, uh, Riddle you have a second?”
I stop him by tapping his shoulder a couple of times. His height already makes mountains seem molecular.
He furrowed his eyebrows and glances at the shoulder I just touched. Making it a scene to dust that part off, what an ass.
“No, I really don’t have a second,” he responds.
“Well that, really, sucks for you huh. Can you teach me techniques for dueling?”
“No,” he starts to turn away.
“Please, you will get one favor from me. Whatever you need.”
Tom turns back around, “Anything? Does that favor expire?”
I shake my head no. If he plans to wait a long time he’ll probably forget about it. He seems to be deep in thought for a bit. No rush really since we're on our break. If he agrees I could get ahead of so many competitors.
“Fine, every Friday afternoon starting tomorrow in the Room of Requirement.”
He immediately strides away while I stare back in shock. My brain didn’t expect him to actually accept. Getting this far wasn’t a very possible outcome.
Now I just have to find out where the Room of Requirement is located.

E.A.T. Prologue infomine
Alright, as before:
Bear in mind this is NOT a translation. This is an infomine. I am sharing only the basic info. There’s a lot about the story in terms of tone and characterization that will be missing until I get to a full translation.
Scene 1
Ron is inside the “fat man’s” room, maintaining a miraculous thing inside it that’s neither lifeless nor alive, and gives off a phosphorescent green light that kills anyone who’s in the room for too long (pretty sure it’s some radioactive material). His job is to maintain it because if the light goes out the theater will crash (it appears to be their source of power), and he’s the only one who can survive being near it, given his curse of always regenerating (note, his flesh is largely destroyed by the radiation when he leave the room but starts growing back within minutes).
Oh, and dead soldiers are now being called “dead servants”.
When Ron is finished with his work he heads out, the theater now silent when it was noisy before. He is greeted by his underling Fry Kitchen, who has the head of a chicken and uses “ssu” in his sentences like Chartette (though in hiragana not katakana—he also uses the more working class personal pronoun of asshi). He cheerfully informs Ron that all the other dead soldiers were killed by a hero troupe who invaded the theater (Ron’s not surprised so I guess this was going on while he was working).
Fry is the weakest of them, but he survived through Lich’s help (Lich is still alive).
Ron goes to talk to Lich, who is outside the theater.
Apparently they are not longer in the world of “Giants battling with beastmen” (I think the world at the end of Heavenly). They’re in a different world now.
Scene 2
A bit of exposition on Ron (wandered the earth for ages, now works for Banica, etc).
The new world they are in has wind, the sky is blue, and the scenery appears little changed from the world they were just in save for that it’s covered in the ruins of a crumbled civilization. It seems barren but there is apparently some life left in it.
They see a black bird flying towards them with a girl riding its back. The bird turns out to be a transformed Lich. They open the front door for him.
The girl said nothing while they spoke, and she has a horn on her forehead.
Scene 3
It’s ambiguous how long it’s been since Heavenly—Ron’s narrative implies it could have been a day or several years.
Ron meets with Lich (now humanoid again) in the main hall, getting him some water. Lich doesn’t need to eat, but he does need water, or his mud body will dry up and become unable to move. Also, he can take moisture from food through his makeshift digestive system, and taste things.
Ron asks about the girl, who is sleeping in a guest room Fry set up. He’s anxious because of what happened with Jarre from the giants world (I guess it was his hero troupe that killed everyone). Lich is unconcerned because he can make them new bodies, but when Ron asks about it he gets a little testy and takes him up to his room.
Inside was a beastman (or rather, demi-human) like Fry, someone covered in white fur with two big ears. It’s the rabbit(bunny?) hero Jarre. asleep/unconscious. Ron’s comments make it sound like Jarre betrayed them at the last minute.
Lich explains that it’s not Jarre’s soul in that body anymore, but Pollo. Cue some exposition on how Arte and Pollo had killed Ron, who used to be human. Lich tells Ron that he failed to account for the fact that the mud he uses to make the bodies only exists in Evillious, and their supply was destroyed during the attack. So Jarre’s body was the only one he could put Pollo in.
The same was true for Fry—he was a beastman from the world they were just in. After the giants killed him, Lich put him back in his original body to make him a dead servant as an experiment.
Lich has done the same with Eater and Arte, who are in the next room, using the bodies of Jarre’s friends. Ron asks about Banica, and Lich decides to take him to the clocktower (the cockpit of the theater) to discuss the matter with Seth.
Scene 4
Some repeat exposition on Seth (he claims he’s Lich’s friend, Lich denies it).
When they get in the cockpit, Seth is there in his mask form (which surprises Ron). Lich explains that while ordinarily they would need lots of people to run the ship, Seth actually built the theater so that it could be operated by him alone if need be. They needed to get him a new body when Jarre killed him, but they didn’t have time or resources to do it, so Lich merged the soul archive housing his spirit data with the ship—Seth is now the theater itself.
Seth asks if Lich will give him one of the beastmen bodies they have in storage now that the danger is over, but Lich refuses, saying he doesn’t have one prepared (Seth accuses him of just being mean). The two of them bicker for a bit, and Ron reflects on how he doesn’t get the relationship between them.
Lich then decides to get to the point, saying their goal of finding new food for Banica has to be put on hold for now.
Scene 5
This is just repeat exposition on Banica and what’s led up to now.
Scene 6
As Lich says, they were all killed off by the beastmen. Jarre sliced Ron down himself (but Ron regenerated). But they were all souls to begin with. As long as the “soul archive” they have in the theater isn’t destroyed, they can be revived again and again. Lich ran out of mud to make bodies with, so he used the beastmen bodies instead. This worked for everyone—except Banica.
Apparently there’s a difference in quality between Banica’s souls and everyone else’s. Lich, Arte, Pollo, Eater, and Seth all have souls closer to gods. Banica’s soul was originally that of a normal human. Her soul had special qualities while she’d contracted with Vlad, but now that he’s escaped and didn’t come with them, her soul is now human again.
There are ways to revive her, but it’s tricky. He could make a body with mud, but they don’t have any. And they can’t go back to Evillious because of “Ma’s Ghost”. That is—when they first started dimension hopping, they had issues and almost crashed. Lich investigated and determined this to be a result of Ma’s Ghost. He’s not entirely sure what’s going on there or what it is exactly, but apparently it tries to destroy anything that attempts to enter the Evillious world.
The other option they have is to find Banica’s alter ego. This is out of Lich’s expertise so Seth offers to take over, but Lich refuses, claiming he’ll be too long-winded and sesquipedalian. The alter ego will probably be different from Banica in every way, but her soul will be of the same quality. And so, there’s a good chance that Banica can use their body.
Lich is certain the girl he brought back is Banica’s alter ego, in this world of “Angels and Demons”. He’s certain because he analyzed the Akashic Record (not sure what he means by that, and Ron doesn’t understand either).
Ron is uncertain if they have the right to kill the girl to bring Banica back. Lich brushes him off, but while Ron accepts that they are “close to gods” and thus the rules don’t apply to them, he’s different. Lich argues with him, but Ron isn’t convinced.
He’d already become an undead when Banica contracted, so he couldn’t stop her from falling to evil. Still, he wants to avoid the same thing happening again.
Back before he joined her, he had the option of going through the gate to be reincarnated. But he doesn’t know if his curse would be lifted if he went through. Some of the people who went through were once his family, but he feels like it’s been too long now (and their memories were erased upon reincarnating anyway).
Ron argues that he knows the suffering of never being able to die. He argues about that with Lich (whether it’s the right thing, to bring Banica back to life or not), when Seth interjects that it’s best to ask the person they’re talking about.
He’s put Banica in a red cat body, implied to be a replica of the one he made for Irina, until they can get her in her alter ego’s body. Ron is happy she simply has a body at all, but she’s far from pleased with it (also this body requires moisture to function properly, so we can assume that’s why Irina was able to drink milk as well).
Banica ponders taking her alter ego’s body, not minding her looks but finding her blindness to be an issue.
Lich turns on a monitor in the cockpit that shows a map of the world they’re in, explaining it’s one of the Third Period’s parallel worlds, and is very physically similar to it. The race that rules it (or used to) are demons—though he clarifies they are not like the demons of Evillious, and are more just a race that is called demons. A race called angels fought against them, though they’ve either died out or they’ve gone behind the theater’s reach. He only knows they’re humanoids with wings on their backs because the girl (Baamu Kuuren —Berm? Balm? Barm? Kulen? I don’t know) mistook him for one.
Lich also explains he can turn into a bird partially as a result of running an experiment on himself when putting the others in beastmen bodies to make sure that there wouldn’t be any rejections (not totally sure I’ve understood that correctly).
Banica notes that if the girl is a demon, and she thought he was an angel, it’s weird that she trusted him. Lich chalks it up to her being helpless and seeking salvation, and also his natural charisma. –Before revealing he’s joking and that he expects her to try and stab him in the back.
Balm is the imperial princess of the (Puraashino) Empire that ruled the demons. She is the only member of her family who survived the war with the angels, and it was apparently an angel that burned her eyes.
Lich asks for permission to kill her so they can use it as Banica’s body (note—Banica occasionally claws Lich’s face during this scene), but Banica wants him to fix the issue with her eyes first. Lich and Seth argue a little—Lich plans to use one of the beastmen bodies as material for the eyes, but Seth argues that’s a bad idea because they’re from another dimension.
Lich leaves to begin on his work. Ron asks Banica if she’s really going to steal that girl’s body, and she asks him what he would do if he found his alter ego. He can’t answer.
Scene 7
As Seth foretold, Lich can’t fix the eye problem using the beastmen bodies even after several days.
Ron is setting out milk for Banica in the main room, and Fry is bemoaning what a brat Balm is. She’s plucked the feathers on his arm. He also says something about her horn? (I think that it has some kind of tactile sense of things, despite her being blind?)
As Banica is musing over putting the girl to work, Arte and Pollo (both bunny beastmen) come in, followed by Eater, now an enormous Asian black bear, carrying lumber. As they get to work, Banica explains to Ron that she’s been thinking since the whole thing with Jarre happened. Now that she’s lost her demon powers, she shouldn’t be picking fights with people from other dimensions willy-nilly like that. So she’s converting the main hall into a restaurant (it’s not like Evils Theater 2 has a theater room anyway), I guess to better fit in with the other worlds they go to. Ron laughs because this is very like her.
Ron wonders if she’ll have Balm cook, since Banica only has two at her disposal (Eater and Arte) and they both have other duties as well. Banica is confident that Balm can cook, being another version of herself. And, she’ll have a mentor.
At that, she summons a dog beastman wearing a white chef’s hat. She calls him Mister Dog, and tells him to teach Balm how to cook. He agrees and leaves, and when Ron asks where he came from, Banica says that he’s always been here (it’s Carlos, guys).
There’s a bit of thought on why Ron accompanied Banica this time, that it’s not entirely out of loyalty. When he saw her again she greeted him as though the last few hundred years had never happened and told him all about her travel plans. He’d never traveled with her before, as he had to watch the house. It actually made him slightly envious whenever she would come home and tell him about it.
They had finished talking, and to sum up the convo basically he decided to go on the journey with her he couldn’t do all those centuries ago. Though he’s still not sure entirely why even now.

Hero Collaboration Program
Chapter 2 pt. 1: Welcome to The Program! -->
Chapter 2 pt. 2                                            Find Chapter 1 here!
Story Summery: High School Hero Collaboration Program! Helping Sophomore hero students connect with others around the world! Come join us for a two-week-long trip to one of our schools for an amazing once in a lifetime experience with students of Yuuei! Only a lucky 40 students will be selected for this program. They will be split into two groups of 20 and sent to different schools to have completely unique experiences!
AKA; A very bitg crossover fanfic I started because I can’t help myself. I adore all of these characters and hope I had done them justice, though I did take many backstories and threw them into the meat grinder to remold them in a way that fits this universe. Also, I love 1-A but I also want to take them down a peg or two... I also just want to see them get their asses handed to them.
A/N: Here it is! Chapter two! I hope anyone who decides to read it enjoys!
Alfred Freedom Jones practically bounced out of his bed in excitement. All the exchange student’s had arrived around 7PM last night in hopes for them to receive enough rest and get used to any sudden time change and jet lag. He and Valerie - a teacher of the school where they conduct part of the program - had wanted to be the ones to pick up and welcome all the kids. However, They were tasked with any last minute decorating to make the dorms presentable and welcoming and preparing dinner, that way the kids would have food in their bellies before they headed to their dorms and began unpacking and going to bed.
The dorms of the school are located right behind the school itself. Although they were especially made 15 years ago since the program had begun, they are used for other purposes throughout the year to not go to waste. When students find themselves in situations where they need a place to stay, they are welcome to speak to a counselor to explain the situation, where they are given a room key and a ‘job’ as a tutor or teacher's assistant as well as have mandatory counseling to ‘pay off’ their stay. Sports clubs are also welcome to apply and stay in the program dorms during the summer for training camp, and many clubs even enjoy having sleep-overs for a few days as a bonding activity.
This year has been one of the few where nobody has found the need to stay in the dorms throughout their school year. Alfred could almost cry for joy at that fact. Not only is there no student in the school facing such problems, but there won't be a random kid trying to sneak into all of their activities. It’s endearing when it happens the first few times, but the moment you have every one of those students trying to sneak into amusement parks and other field trips with the exchange students they’d become attached to, making you buy them a ticket on the spot to not just send them back, it becomes a little of a problem. Needless to say, he and Valerie have started carrying extra money with them on field trips.
Last year was a new one. Instead of them just buying a ticket on the spot, the two seniors that were with them had been snuck onto the bus and into six flags. They had somehow convinced the shy Brazilian boy to use their quirk to turn them into mice for an hour, so they could sneak in.
Everyone that enters a theme park nowadays are given quirk suppressant bracelets, that are custom-made for each theme park with designs, shapes and looks, that they must wear during their stay and return when they leave. The senior students were somehow able to get their hands on some when they transformed back, inside the theme park.
Everyone was very smug when they explained to Alfred and Valerie how exactly two seniors not in the program and without tickets got into the theme park. Even the shy boy seemed proud that so much was accomplished with their quirk. As illegal as that is, he couldn’t help but feel a little proud of how they had just outsmarted the system. Although that didn’t stop, he or Valerie from lecturing them. His kids were very apologetic, and tried to make up for it by paying the teachers for the two students tickets by all pitching in.  He had avoided Aizawa’s questioning stare at the two students the whole day and allowed Valerie and the kids to keep him busy.
All things considered, Alfred and Valerie might not be the best choices as chaperones for the students, since they let them get away with shit when they know they’ve been outsmarted. Their superiors don’t have to know. Although the teachers praise them for being so innovative, the two teachers always make sure to drill it into their brain how important following the law is and how they shouldn't abuse their quirks in such ways. They also make sure to explain what kind of consequences such actions can cause, especially if they were pros.
The reason they don’t kick them out of the program or anything, though, is because they are kids in training for a dangerous profession. They deserve the opportunity to have fun and act their age every now and again. Sure, they usually end up realizing how idiotic many of their ideas turn out to be, but it’s best they start learning now than mess up later and have their careers ruined for it. He and Valerie have kept in contact with kids who had graduated too! They have all become wonderful heroes, even if they had pulled quite a few pranks during their time in the program.
Adjusting the prescription glasses on his face, Alfred grabbed all the lanyards with cardholders attached to them and made sure each of the students program ID’s, room and key cards were there. He was going to hand them out last night after dinner, but all the kids seemed too exhausted, so he and Valerie had led them to their rooms to go unpack and rest. Once he was sure all of them were there, he grabbed his own lanyard. Wrapping it around his jeans' belt loop, he grabbed a folder and stepped out of his dorm.
Looking at his watch, he realized it was 9:01 AM. They had told the kids to set their alarms, so they should be awake and getting ready by now. Going over the schedule he had memorized, he noted that they all had to be in the cafeteria at 9:45 for a late breakfast. After, they would head over to the large field separating the two dorm buildings for group activities. Since the students are all jet-lagged, they are free from classes till Friday, tomorrow. It may be a program for training, but they're students, can’t let them all fall behind.
Making his way down the hallway, he began knocking on doors to the boys rooms on his floor. “Head down to the common area in ten minutes! Wear something comfortable for physical activity!” he called out as he made his way down all 12 doors. He could faintly hear Valerie doing the same downstairs to the females.
As he walked towards the stairs, he spotted a few students already following behind him. He had even spotted a few of the girls walking behind Valerie, already attempting small talk. Once in the common area, he and Valerie smiled at the kids that followed them down.
“You kids are free to enjoy yourselves with anything you’d like while we wait for the others.” Valerie’s chipper voice practically sang as she spoke. “The remote to the TV is on the coffee table, the pool table racks are on the wall over there, the ball for the foosball table should be in one of the goals, and you are free to explore the field, just don’t go too far.”
Both adults watched in amusement as the students stared around in awe. By the time the ten minutes had passed, all the students were scattered throughout the field, or common room. It hadn’t taken long for the two adults to gather them all up outside. One of the students had been quite sociable, going around speaking to everyone.
“Alright students ~!” Valerie sang as she closed and locked the sliding glass door behind her, “Since we still have time before we have to head over for breakfast, let’s all introduce ourselves properly to one another.”
Alfred gave the kids a two finger salute as his partner took her place next to him, “Wassup guys! I’m Alfred Freedom Jones! Call me Mr. Jones! I’m a representative of the Hero collaboration program! I’ve been to both schools and have been doing this for 6 years! I was actually a student of this program when it was established! I hope you all enjoy yourselves while you are here!”
“Hello~! I’m Valerie Felicity Frizzle! Please, feel free to call me Miss. Frizzle or even Frizz, as many of my kids call me. I have been teaching in Marina high school for 19 years now. I was actually the teacher that had convinced my coworkers and the district to sign our school up for this lovely program! Truly, it has been a wonderful joy to meet and work with such wonderful children! I hope you all have a glorious experience and take home with you something new~!” The woman curtsied, showing off her dark purple dress that depicted outer space in beautiful patterns and colors.
“Now then! Your turn guys! Anyone want to go first, or shall we popcorn it? Maybe left to right? Choose someone and let them choose after? Whatcha guys up for?”
Both teachers watched in amusement as they watched the kids glance around at one another. They had seen some of them already starting to make some friends. Five of them seemed to get along well while playing foosball. Two had played 8-ball while conversing with two other students that watched with interest. Some of the others kept to themselves while watching TV or hanging around outside. Hopefully they are able to make some friends too. Just as Miss. Frizzle prepared to call on someone, a green arm raised up.
“Me! Me! I would love to go first!” The boy’s grin widened as everyone's gaze landed on him. Everything about him was a different shade of  green, from his skin to his hair and eyes. He wore a white tank top with an unbuttoned short-sleeved button up that has Disney dogs printed all over it, and loose, knee-length jean shorts. A boy at the other end of the crowd of students with green eyes and a serious face jolted in surprise and sank a little into his seat once he noticed him.
“I like your enthusiasm, kid! Alright! Let’s hear it! Ah, don’t share any quirk information, though! We have a little activity planned later, and staying anonymous would be the best course of action.” Alfred grinned just as wide in response.
“Okay!” He bounced over to stand between them. It was unnecessary, but it looks like it’s a thing now. Both teachers could see the discomfort that had settled on a small handful of students at the thought of standing in front of strangers to introduce themselves. “Hi! My name is Garfield Mark Logan! You guys can call me Gar! My name can be quite the mouthful. My hero name is Beast Boy and I came from San Francisco, aaand oh yeah! I’m Vegetarian! It’s nice to meet you all -! Oh my gosh, Damian! Hey dude!!”
Said boy groaned as he facepalmed. A few people in the group held back their laughter as best they could as Garfield rushed over to him. Grabbing the sleeve of Damian’s jacket, he dragged him to the front of the crowd, “You practically ghosted us, dude. This is your punishment. Introduce yourself.”
Damian almost stumbled when Garfield pushed him before retreating back to his spot next to a boy with green highlights in his hair. Letting out a heavy sigh, he fixed the sleeve to his hoodie and straightened his black V-neck shirt. Clearing his throat, he spoke, “Hello, I am Damian Wayne. It’s a pleasure to meet you all. I suppose if I am going off of Garfield’s introduction; my hero name is Red Bird, I came from Gotham in New Jersey, and I am also Vegetarian.” Green eyes scanned the crowd before pointing to a boy with light brown hair wearing a tie diy shirt. “You go next.”
“O - oh! Um, okay.” The boy stood to his feet from his place on the concrete, “Hi, uh, My name is Rudy Tabootie. I live pretty close actually, Burbank, to be exact. Uh, I’m not vegetarian… sorry? Uh, my Hero name is Snap. It’s really cool to meet you all.” and just like that, all the introductions went, and the group found themselves in the cafeteria for breakfast with their new lanyards. It wasn’t long till all the student’s exited the cafeteria and made their way to the field between the dorms.
“Alright guys! We want to explain a few things with you before we start today’s first activity!” Mr. Jones clapped his hands together, excitedly.
“I’m sure you have all noticed how the special guests, the main reason for this program, Yuuei isn’t here yet. Well, they will all be arriving tomorrow. However, you will not be introduced to them until Monday.” Miss. Frizzle smiled widely, the students before them began murmuring to one another in confusion.
“Um, Why?” A girl with pearl white skin asked. She wore light gray joggers, a sky blue tank top and had her cobalt blue hair tied up in pigtails. Jenny Walkman.
“The answer is simple! The students of Yuuei have had the whole school year to train and get to know one another, as well as their abilities. Needless to say, they all know how to work together.” Miss. Frizzle explained, “For this reason, our program is set up to allow all the exchange students to have time to get to know one another as well as each other's quirks and skills, so you may be able to work together when needed. This way, when we do battle training, everything would be on as equal footing as we can get.”
Mr. Jones nodded beside her, “Which is why all weekend, as they rest from their long flight, get accustomed to their surroundings and have fun sightseeing, we will be doing a bunch of group activities to get to know one another better. That way, when we begin battle training…” He trails off, hoping someone would finish for him. He wasn’t disappointed.
“We’d at least be on equal footing against them.” A girl with long red hair that she had tied up in a ponytail responded. Wearing a green crop top, and dark blue cargo pants, she crossed her arms over her chest, a smile crossing her lips slightly at the plan. Kimberly Anne Possible
“Precisely!” Miss. Frizzle and Mr. Jones sang together.
“Today’s activity, drum roll please,” Miss. Frizzle happily made the sound effect for her coworker. Mr. Jones held up a dodgeball, where he got it, nobody knows, “Dodgeball!”

Summary: Peter is 9 years old. Parents still alive. Still friends with Flash. They go on an excursion to Stark Industries, right before the events of Iron Man 2. Side note: Tony is not romantically/sexually interested in Peter until chapter 3, when they are in an established relationship. Warnings: Even though Peter and Flash are still friends in this chapter, Flash is already bullying him. Other than that, not much, tbh?
Rating: Mature (just to be sure for later on lol).
I hope you enjoy! -Lien
...
“Mister Thompson, you’re old enough to know you shouldn’t stand in a driving bus, please take a seat,” the young teacher sighs while tightening the pony tail on her head. They’re nearly at Stark Tower now, so obviously it was difficult for most students to keep their cool. They all showed it in their own way. Flash got even more talkative and jumpy, something Peter never understood. They’re best friends, have been since kindergarten, and they know each other inside and out. When excitement hit Peter, he turned more inward, like a star waiting to implode, as opposed to Flash’s bomb waiting to explode. They were opposites, yet it fit. Obviously, the school wanted to go to Stark Tower to get them interested in science and technology, something both Flash and Peter already kind of were. However, anybody who cared even the slightest, was more excited to get a glimpse of Tony Stark. Of Iron Man. The metal hero. Even though the chances were slim, they couldn’t help but bounce on the bus seats. Because, what if… The class was going to go and do some kind of interactive walk through the building’s public spaces, with one special look inside a child-friendly lab. Erica had quietly asked how they would be able to get inside a dog and Mrs. Marie had to calmly explain that a laboratory and a Labrador are two very different things. … About two hours after they arrived, they’re in the child-friendly lab. During the tour of the building, nearly everyone forgot about Tony Stark. The place itself is wonderous and gigantic. It’s filled with moving gadgets and displays of future technology. The famous Arc Reactor gets promoted on pretty much every banner they pass. The students were allowed way more than they were at Oscorp two weeks earlier. Stark Industries sure sparked the kids’ interest in science and technology, as was the goal of this trip. Most of the other students were involved in the interactive tests, but Peter had seen all of that fairly quickly. He wanted to know more about the science behind it- he didn’t just want to watch it happen. Peter was all over the place. He’s wearing his dad’s favorite “Science Rules” cap – he was allowed to borrow it for the day – and bounces from desk to desk, asking endless questions that the pedagogically trained scientists answered accordingly. Some seemed surprised by Peter’s brightness, but the young boy didn’t really notice as he was usually quickly distracted by the next shiny project someone else was working on. With a short: “Thank you, bye!” he made his way to the other scientists in the room. “Peter, check this out!” Peter rushes towards Flash, who called for him. The boy has his face pressed against a glass balustrade that looks out over four levels of open space. “What is it?” Peter asks as he mimics Flash’s pose, pressing his open palms and his nose on the surface. “Are you blind?!” Flash exclaims, nodding at the ground floor, two floors below them. Peter follows his friend’s gaze and gasps when he spots him. “Tony Stark!” Both kids immediately waddle their feet in their place, not daring to look away from the legend who is having a casual chat with a red-haired woman. Peter and Flash giggle with delight, but eventually fall silent. “We should go say hi,” Flash whispers. “We- We can go say hi!” “As if! I’m not going down there,” Peter replies, not taking his eyes off Tony. “He’s probably super busy.” Peter is startled when he notices Flash reaching out for him. The boy grabs Peter’s father’s cap from his head and swiftly tosses it over the balustrade. “Flash! No!” Peter shouts as he stands up straight to reach over the fence in an attempt to grasp the cap. When he fails, all both kids can do is watch the hat fall and fall and fall and it seems to take forever before… Thunk. Flash’s face pales and he runs off, leaving Peter – who is frozen in fear – behind. The boy is stuck, clutching the balustrade with both hands as he stares wide-eyed at how Tony Stark picks up the cap that hit his shoulder on the way down. He reads the words that are on it and then looks up, making eye contact with Peter. The boy is so caught up that he barely notices security freaking out around Tony for what happened, but the man dampens the situation by raising the cap above his head and pointing at it with his free hand, nodding up at Peter. “This yours?” … Peter took the blame. He didn’t want Flash to get in trouble and so, both he and Mrs. Marie get taken to a separate room by security. The woman chuckles nervously, certain that she screwed up for losing track of Peter, and that she’ll never be allowed back in Stark Industries. Peter just feels massive guilt for inconveniencing so many people. After a minute of scared silence, the door opens. “But, sir-“ “It’s alright.” Peter perks up at the voice he has heard on TV so much. He turns, jaw slack, as he looks up in awe at Tony Stark, wearing his cap. The man’s attention turns from the security guard to Peter. “Mister Stark, I am so sorry-“ Mrs. Marie stands up and squeezes her hands together, bowing her head in shame. “Don’t worry about it. If I didn’t want things like this to happen I wouldn’t have opened my labs to youngsters.” Something about Tony’s words seems off, like he was frustrated that she distracted him from why he was here. “You can go, I wanna talk to the boy. Alone.” “Tha- sir, that’s highly unorthodox-“ Mrs. Marie protests, but one stern look has her press her lips together. “Just wanna talk about the cap.” Tony shows a tight smile and gestures at the door. “Besides, I believe you still have three hours left to keep an eye on your other students during this excursion.” Mrs. Marie rushes out after quickly thanking Tony for not being in trouble. He leaves the door open and sits down in the desk chair opposite Peter. “Richard Parker?” Tony says casually as he places his feet on top of the desk and cocking his head. He takes off the cap and shows the little label with the handwritten name inside of it. “Tha- ehm…” Peter stutters. “My dad,” he pushes out quickly. “Huh,” Tony says with a curt nod, turning the cap to look at the front again. “Smart guy. Had a couple chats with him a while back.” Peter’s eyes widen in shock. “You know my dad?” “I mean, he’s not in my phone’s contact list, but we’ve had some talks at conventions before.” Tony puts his feet down and leans forward. His elbows rest on the desk. Peter frowns slightly when he sees some dark lines in Tony’s neck. Are those his veins? “Which has me wonder if you’re bright as he is.” “I’m nine,” Peter retorts without thinking. Tony snorts surprised and can’t help a chuckle. “You sure are.” The man seems to ponder for a bit and then he tosses the cap on the desk. “Tell you what, kid.” Peter swallows, scared that this is the hour of reckoning. As much as Tony doesn’t seem angry, Peter is still afraid that he will get punished for what happened. “You get to ask me one question.” The boy frowns again, so Tony quickly continues. “If it’s a good one, you get your cap back and you can go.” Peter opens his mouth, immediately knowing what to say, but Tony raises his index finger, stopping the kid from talking with just a gesture. “If it’s a great one, I’ll give you a tour of the place myself.” Peter immediately wants to ask what the difference between a good and a great question is, but realizes that would be an immediate throwaway of the one question he is allowed to ask. The stakes are high, he can’t screw this up. He licks his lips and takes a breath. His head bows down to look at his fiddling fingers and then back up, noticing the faint glow coming through Tony’s dress shirt. “I read somewhere that the arc reactor uses cool fusion to regulate temperature…” Tony’s eyebrows shoot up surprised. “But I- when we went to Oscorp two weeks ago, we talked about nuclear energy and there someone said the most ideal element to use for cool fusion is palladium.” Peter swallows. “If that is in your body… How do you keep it from poisoning you?” The man’s jaw tightens and his expression sterns. “Still working on that,” he mumbles, nearly quiet enough for it to go past Peter. Peter blinks. Once. Twice. Did he just ask a question even Tony Stark himself has no answer to? No sound is made for a full minute. Peter can hear his heartbeat thump between his ears, though his breathing is slow. “How old did you say you are?” Utter disbelief seeps from Tony’s words. “Nine, sir.” “Jesus Christ.” “Does that mean it was a great question?” This time, it’s Tony who blinks. Once. Twice. “Yes, kid.”

Someday Soon-Chapter 1
Pairing: JJ Maybank x Fem!OC
Summary: The only goal Isabella Bailer has this summer, is to have a good time with her friends, the Pogues. But when they find a ship wreck after a hurricane their summer takes an unexpected turn.
Note: So this is my first fic that I have actually properly finished and I am so excited to share it. I first posted it on Wattpad but I find that I don't really use that platform much so I wanted to post it somewhere I go on often. I hope you enjoy my twist on Outer Banks :) Also the I have written Iz to be as nondescript as I could so that you can imagine her however you want.
Word Count: 10.5k (The first chapter is really long but later on the chapters get shorter.)
🔅🔆🔅
We’re the Pogues, and our mission this summer is to have a good time, all the time.
The soft breeze brought the smell of the ocean to my nose while the sun shone brightly on my cheeks. I had to squint to see my friends through the bright rays. As the sun fell lower the day only seemed to get warmer, the beer in my hand brought a cool relief, after taking another drink a smile grew on my face as I listened to the conversation between Pope and John B.
“That’s what, a three-story fall to the deck?” Pope asked, looking up at John B who was currently balancing on one foot on the edge of the roof. We were all hanging around one of the many mini-mansions that were under construction in Figure Eight. “I give you about a one-in-three chance of survival.”
“Hm” John B replied as he stuck a finger into the air pretending to check the direction of the wind. “Should I do it?”
“Yeah, jump.” Pope quipped, pointing a drill at him. “I'll shoot you on the way down.”
“You’ll shoot me?”
“Yep. Pow!”
“They’re gonna have Japanese toilets with towel warmers.” Kie told us shocked, as she emerged from the house that was yet to be finished.
“Of course. Why wouldn’t they?” I inquired somewhat bitterly from my spot sitting next to JJ. Nothing Kooks did surprised me anymore, all they seemed to care about was their own vanity.
“This used to be a turtle habitat, but who cares about turtles, I guess?” Kie asked, sounding somewhat defeated. I sent her a sad smile, wishing I had more power to change the way things were.
“I can’t have cold towels.” JJ added sarcastically before we all directed our gaze towards John B.
“Can you please not kill yourself?” Kie asked him sweetly as he continued to lean dangerously close to the edge of the building.
“Yeah that would really ruin my summer.” I added, I had protested John B climbing onto the roof in the first place but once that boy got something into his mind, no one could change it.
“And don’t spill that beer. I’m not giving you another one.” JJ warned seconds before the can slipped through John B’s grasp and came crashing onto the deck.
“Whoa! Oh, shit.” John B exclaimed as he attempted to regain his balance on the roof, I turned to look out at the ocean again, not wanting to see him hit the deck as well.
“Of course you did. Smooth.”
“A plus.” Pope commented as he leaned over the side of the deck before looking back at the group. “Hey, uh, security’s here. Let’s wrap it up.”
“Humpty Dumpty, let’s roll.” JJ called to John B while he hopped off of the scaffolding we had been sitting on, before turning around and offering me his hand to help me get down. “Sweetheart?”
“Thank you.” I replied, accepting the hand he held out as I jumped down onto the deck.
“Yeah. Let’s go.” John B agreed as he followed us down.
“Gary, is that you?” JJ called out to the security guard as we gathered our stuff up. “It’s me. Gary, good to see you, man!”
“You’re just asking for it.” I told him as I shook my head trying to hold in my laughter.
“Get ‘em! They’re comin’ your way!” I heard one of the guards shout from behind me as I followed Kie towards the van. “Hey! Stop!”
I spared a glance behind me as I exited the house and saw the guard catching up to JJ.
“Not much of a hugger!” I heard JJ shout as he avoided the guard.
As I ran down the front steps John B pulled up in the van, Kie hopped into the passengers seat as I climbed into the back leaving the side door open for the boys to jump in whenever it was they decided to show up.
“Bus is leaving!” John B called out as he honked the horn. I peered out the back window watching as Pope started climbing over the fence, before promptly falling flat on his face. JJ hoped over next and helped him back to his feet.
“Come on, boys!” Kie called.
I held out my hand for Pope who was struggling to get into the moving van. Once both boys were inside John B stepped on the gas and we all watched Gary hopelessly chase after us. We were all left in a fit of laughter after JJ was done teasing the poor security guard.
🔅🔆🔅
The Outer Bank, Paradise on Earth. It’s the sort of place where you either have two jobs or two houses. Two tribes, one island.
All right. So there’s Figure Eight, the rich side of the island. Home of the Kooks. So, guess where we don’t live?
And then, there’s the South Side or the Cut. Home to the working class who make a living busing tables, washing yachts, running charters. The natural habitat of… drumroll, please… the Pogues.
That’s us.
Pogues, Pogies, the throwaway fish. Lowest member of the food chain. Okay. So, the downside of the Pogue life is we’re ignored and neglected. But the upside of the Pogue life? We’re ignored and neglected, which means we do whatever we want, whenever we want. So, let me introduce you to the crew.
First up… JJ Maybank, my best friend since the third grade. He's about as local as they come. Latest in a long line of fishing, drinking, smuggling, vendetta-holding salt-lifers who made their living off the water. Best surfer I know. Just don’t tell him I said that. Mild kleptomaniac and a future tax cheat.
Next up is Isabella Bailer but we just call her Iz. A former Kook up until she was ten and her dad was caught embezzling money from his company and promptly arrested, her family basically lost everything. Shortly after that she moved in next door. Definitely the Mom of the group, she basically takes care of all of us, and when she’s not cleaning up our messes, she’s working with her Mom, cleaning houses for the Kooks. Iz is the sweetest girl you’ll ever meet until you threaten her friends then you better run the other way and hope she doesn’t find you.
After Iz there’s Kiara Carrera, or Kie, as we call her. When she’s not saving turtles or listening to Marley, or getting a dolphin tattoo, she hangs out with us. I’m not really sure why though. So, she’s a rich kid, actually. Foot in both worlds. Her family owns The Wreck, this Outer Banks institution. Total cash cow with the tourists. You know, I’m not really sure how her parents feel about us. But I think we all have had a thing for her at one point or another.
Finally we have Pope Heyward, the brains of the operation… finalist for the Lucas T. Vanderhorst Merit Scholarship. And the smartest person I know. Little bit of a weirdo. His father’s this legendary character, Heyward. Anything you wanted on the island, Hayward could get for you. Now, I’m not sure Heyward knew what to make of his oddball son, but it didn’t matter. He was a Pogue, just like the rest of us.
So, that’s my crew. And my name is John Booker Routledge. I’ve been living on my own for the past nine months in an old fish shack on the marsh. The Château, as my dad used to call it. Where is my dad? Well he disappeared at sea nine months ago, looking for a shipwreck. Who disappears at sea these days? I miss him. Any other possible guardians who could look after me, might be your next question? Well Mom split when I was three. Last I heard she was in Colorado and Uncle T who is supposedly my legal guardian is currently in Mississippi, building houses…
Which means it’s just me right now, on my own, hangin’ with my friends.
🔅🔆🔅
I swung lazily in the hammock that sat between John B’s house and my own as I watched the water. The sun was starting to rise higher and I could already tell it was going to be another long hot day. I was lost in my own thoughts until I felt the hammock dip to the side. Glancing up I gave John B a small smile as he tried to readjust the balance of the hammock.
“You know I really hate this thing?” He told me still struggling.
“I know it's ‘cause you don’t know how to relax.” I replied, teasing him as I shifted to help balance the hammock after the change in weight.
“I’m gonna take it down one of these days.” He threatened, finally leaning back.
“No, I love this hammock, it's my favorite spot.”
“I know I’m only teasing you, I’m not sure you would ever talk to me again if I took away your hammock.”
“You’re damn right I wouldn't.” I told him attempting to sound serious before letting out a laugh. We laid quietly for a few minutes before I spoke up again. “So do you have big plans today?”
“Um, yes.” He responded after taking a moment to think. “I get to go down to social services and talk to some people about how there are no responsible adults in my life.”
“Oh that sounds like sooo much fun.”
“I know right? You want to come with me?”
“As much as I would love that, JJ said he was going to take me out so I could practice driving the boat.” I had my license but I was not the best driver on land and I had barely ever driven in the water.
“Oooh you and JJ alone on a boat?” John B asked, stretching out his words and wiggling an eyebrow at me. He loved to tease me about the very obvious crush that I had on JJ every chance he got. At his teasing I took the half empty beer he had brought out with him much to his protest.
“No, number one, you and I both know that I will never be brave enough to make a move, number two, no Pogue on Pogue macking and number three I think that Pope said he was coming with us.” I rambled about the many reasons why what John B was suggesting would never happen before I downed the rest of the beer and handed back the empty bottle.
“Wow, thanks, I wanted to drink that.” He commented on the bottle in the grass beside us, I shrugged my shoulders as if to tell him he should have expected it after his teasing. “Also if I were you I’d go confirm that JJ still knew this was happening because he’s inside with a girl right now and they looked like they might be awhile.”
“Seriously?” I groaned trying to cover up my jealousy with annoyance. I knew that I had no right to be jealous, JJ didn’t belong to me and I was far too scared to ever confess how I really felt, not that I could even figure out how I really felt. But it still hurt to see him with different girls all the time. “I guess I’ll go investigate.”
I quickly stood from the hammock before thinking, but it was too late. As I turned around and watched the hammock flip and John B tumble off onto the grass below.
“Thanks for the heads up.” He grumbled as I helped him to his feet.
“Sorry. I forgot how terrible you are at sitting in a hammock.” I said trying to cover the smile on my face.
“Yeah laugh it up, your friend just got attacked by a hammock, real funny.” He replied pretending to be upset as he dusted the dirt off of himself.
“I mean it is kind of funny.” I called over my shoulder as I made my way back towards The Château to find out who was around. “I’ll see you later John B.”
I stepped onto the porch only to find Pope stretched out on the couch fast asleep. ‘I suppose he won’t be joining us.’ I thought as I walked past him into the house.
In the main room Kie laid on the pull out couch blowing clouds of vapor above her. I sent her a soft smile which she returned before I turned the corner towards the bedrooms in the Château.
Only one of the room's doors was closed so I figured that was where JJ was. I raised my hand to knock on the door but the sound of a shrill giggle stopped me. I was pretty sure I didn’t want to know what was going on so my hand retracted back from the door and I walked back towards where Kie was.
I laid down beside her with a sigh. Kie shifted closer to me as we both just hung out.
“I’m pretty sure it’s some Touron who’ll be gone by the end of the week.” Kie finally spoke up, I raised my head to send her a questioning look. “The girl in there.” She added pointing to the room JJ was in.
“Oh.” I nodded laying back down. I stared back up at the ceiling, contemplating whether I wanted more details about this girl. “Was she pretty?”
“I didn’t get a good look.” She responded.
“Huh.” I responded, unsure if she was telling the truth or just trying to make me feel better. “Are you working today?” I asked, wanting to change the subject before I thought about JJ anymore.
“Um, yeah. I have to leave soon.” Kie responded, glancing at the time on her phone. “Did you want to come with me, I might be able to sneak out fries for you.”
“No, I better stay here. I think my Mom has a few things she wants me to do before the storm tonight.” I responded, I also still half hoped that JJ would want to hang out.
“Okay, well I’m sure that I’ll see you tomorrow.” She said, smiling as she stood to gather her stuff.
“Yeah, tomorrow morning we’ll all go out and check out the damage.” I responded, standing up as well.
“Love you.” She cooed, pulling me into a hug.
“Love you too.” I responded, before we both let go of each other. She then grabbed her backpack and headed for the door. “Stay safe!” I called after her as she walked towards her car.
After Kie had left I had made my way to the dock, which is where I was now sitting watching the stormy clouds that were forming out in the open water.
“Hey.” Pope spoke softly, alerting me to his presence, before he sat down next to me.
“Hey, I figured you were going to sleep all day.” I teased, sparing a glance at him.
“Yeah, I guess I was more tired than I thought.” He responded with a smile. “It looks like it’s gonna be bad.” He added, referring to the dark clouds that were beginning to move closer.
“Yeah I just hope it isn’t too loud, last year Emmy had nightmares all summer from the thunder.” I said, remembering how bad my little sister’s nightmares had gotten.
“Well there aren't any thunderstorms in Agatha’s path so there shouldn’t be much thunder this time.” He informed me.
“You are too smart for me, Pope.” I said with a smile.
“Speaking of smart things, we should bring in the boat before it ends up in a tree somewhere down the road.” He said, I looked over at the boat which had sat in the water by the dock all day, waiting for us. I was more than a little bitter over the fact that JJ had stood me up. “Iz?” Pope asked, pulling me from my thoughts.
“Oh, yeah. Sorry, yeah let’s bring in the boat.” I finally responded before standing up to help Pope.
We were able to bring in the boat before Pope had to head home to help out his Dad and I walked back to my house to help my Mom before the storm hit.
🔅🔆🔅
The next morning I woke up to the sound of someone clattering around in the kitchen. After getting dressed I walked out to see my Mom and Emmy at the kitchen table eating breakfast in the dark.
“No power?” I asked as I flipped the switch knowing nothing would happen.
“Nope.” My Mom replied as she walked past me to put her bowl in the sink. “And no water. I’m gonna pick up another tank of water from Heyward on my way home from work. Seems like the storm took out the whole island. Listen I know that you wanna hang out with your friends but I need you to take down all the storm shutters at some point.”
“Mom the day after a hurricane is a free day.” I argued, I knew better than to argue with her most of the time but I still had to try.
“I know and I’m not saying right this minute but at some point it would be nice.” She surprised me with her reply, most days I would get a lecture about talking back.
“Are you feeling okay?” I asked checking her forehead temperature.
“Yeah are you feeling okay Mommy?” Emmy parroted from behind us, one of her new hobbies.
“Yes, I’m feeling fine.” She said, swatting my hand away from her forehead. “I’m trying to be nice, this is your last summer before you graduate and I know you’ve been working a lot.”
“Okay…” I replied, still suspicious that this was some kind of trick. Quickly kissing her cheek, I grabbed my bag and kissed the top of Emmy’s head, jogging to the door I left the house before she could change her mind. “I’ll see you when you get home.”
I heard them both say goodbye as I closed the door behind me and made my way over to where John B and JJ were standing clearing branches off the HMS Pogue.
“Mornin’ boys.” I greeted the pair as I helped them finish clearing off the boat.
“Someone's in a good mood.” John B suggested as he made his way over to the side of the boat I was standing by. “You and JJ have fun?” He asked in a quieter voice.
“Nope, he completely blew me off. I don’t even think he remembered.” I replied, biting the inside of my cheek trying to not show my disappointment. “But it’s fine, today is a free day and we are going to enjoy it.” I said putting a smile back on my face as I looked over to where JJ stood oblivious to mine and John B’s conversation.
🔅🔆🔅
“Well, look who we have here.” JJ taunted as we pulled up to the Heyward’s dock.
“We have a safety meeting. Attendance mandatory.” John B added pretending to speak into a walkie talkie.
“I can’t. My Pop’s got me on lockdown.” Pope replied sadly.
“Come on, man” JJ grumbled from his spot beside me. “Your dad’s a pussy. Over.” he commented speaking into his own pretend walkie talkie. I turned to look at him surprised as I hit his arm lightly. “What? He is?” JJ tried to defend.
“Oh, I heard that, you little bastard.” Heyward scolded JJ.
“We need your son.” I said as I directed my attention to Heyward. “Island rules. Day after a hurricane’s a free day.”
“Who made that up?” Heyward demanded moving closer to the boat.
“Uh… Pentagon, I think. We have security clearance.” I added, trying to come up with excuses.
“Yeah, I have a card.” JJ tried to add to my story.
“You think I’m stupid?” Heyward challenged.
“I'll do it tomorrow. I promise. Tomorrow.” Pope told his dad, getting ready to get into the boat.
“You think... No, no. Hell no. You doin' it right now.” Heyward told Pope as he hopped into the boat. “Bring your ass back up here.”
“I promise I'll do it tomorrow, Dad.” Pope assured his father as we started to float away.
“We’ll bring him back in one piece.” I called back to Heyward as we started to speed off towards Kie’s dock.
🔅🔆🔅
After picking up Kie, Pope had taken over driving the boat and the rest of us were sitting around watching JJ attempt one of his many tricks that he had tried a million times but that never seemed to work the way he wanted it to.
“You’re getting beer in my hair!” Kie reprimanded JJ.
In an attempt to avoid the same fate as Kie I stood up from my spot beside her. But just as I got to my feet I felt the boat shift under me and jolt to the side throwing me off the edge. After a moment underwater I realized what had happened and swam back to the surface.
“Jesus, Pope!” I heard Kie berate Pope.
“You okay, JJ?” John B asked, I assumed he had also been sent overboard.
“I think my heels touched the back of my head.” I heard JJ reply from the other side of the boat.
“Kie, you okay?” John B asked, shifting his concern away from JJ.
“I’m all right.” Kie answered John B after a moment of pause. “Where’s Iz?”
“Over here.” I called from where I was treading water, a moment later I saw JJ swimming over to where I was. We made eye contact for a moment before he scanned that rest of my face with concern making sure I was good. I gave him a reassuring smile before looking back at our friends on the boat.
“Guys... I think there's a boat down there.” Pope said looking out from the ledge of the Pogue.
“Shut up. What?” Kie asked moving to look into the water. “No way.”
“No, no, guys. I'm serious. There's a boat down there.” Pope added confidently. “For real. “
“Holy shit, he's right. Let's go.” Kie said, getting ready to jump into the water.
We all dove down as deep as we could and sure enough a sunken boat was sitting below the surface.
“You guys saw that?” JJ asks as we all come up for air. A chorus of agreement followed JJ’s question as we looked at each other shocked. “That’s a Grady-White. A new one of those is like 500 Gs, easy. That’s a primo rig.”
“Yeah. That's the boat I saw when I surfed the surge.” John B informed us after we had all climbed back into the Pogue.
“You surfed the surge?” I asked, concern filling my thoughts.
“What the heck John B?” Kie added in the same tone.
“That's my boy. Pogue style.” JJ congratulated him, as John B nodded confirming what he had just said.
“Wait, wait. Do we know whose boat that is?” Pope asked curiously, wanting to know more about the wreck.
“No, but we're about to find out.” John B replied as he went to grab the anchor of the boat.
“Dude, it's too deep.” JJ warned as John B made his way over to the edge of the boat.
“Oh, for the weak and feeble, JJ.” John B challenged as he readjusted the anchor in his grip.
“Well, I'm not resuscitating you. I'm just making that clear up front.”
“That's fine.”
“Diver down, fool.” Pope said while giving John B a mock salute.
“Diver down.” We all called as JJ pushed John B off the side of the boat. We all leaned over the side of the boat anxiously waiting for John B to come back up.
“Should we go get him?” I asked the others in a concerned voice. It felt like he had been gone for ages at this point and I couldn't spot him in the murky water. Moments after I spoke John B broke the surface tension in a fit of coughs.
“Oh, my God. That took forever!” Kie said, relieved as we all allowed John B some space to climb onto the Pogue.
“I found this motel key.” John B supplied holding up the key while he got into the boat.
“Great! We salvaged a motel key.” JJ spoke sarcastically as I inspected the key that John B had found.
“Guys, we should report the wreck to the coast guard.” Kie suggested “Maybe we'll get a finder's fee.”
“Yeah, and not work all summer.” JJ added, hopefully as we speed off toward town. “Thanks, Agatha, ya batch.”
🔅🔆🔅
After an unsuccessful talk with the coast guard, as in we were completely ignored because they had no interest in what a group of teenagers had to say, we decided to head straight to the source and check out the motel.
The boat slowed down as we got closer to the motel and began to take in the scene before us. It was a disaster, mattresses thrown on the lawn, windows broken, and trees that had been uprooted or close to it. I had to wonder how much of this damage was caused by the hurricane and how much was caused by a neglectful owner.
“I thought the Château looked bad.” JJ commented from the front of the boat.
“This place is a shitshow.” John B added.
“Doesn't look like a place somebody with a Grady-White stays.” I said, confused as to why someone with such a nice boat would be staying somewhere so rundown.
“No. Looks like a place someone with a Grady-White would get killed.” Pope suggested.
“All right. Here we go.” JJ started jumping out of the boat ready to tie us to the shore. “This is your captain speaking. HMS Pogue comin' in for landing.”
“We good?” John B asked, standing beside me.
“Yeah, we good.” JJ confirmed.
“All right. Here goes nothin'.” I stated, while I tried to take the key from Pope’s hand, who had elected to stay on the boat with Kie as lookouts.
“Hey.” Pope said seriously, while he held the key just out of reach.
“Yeah?”
“Don't let them do anything stupid.”
“Yeah, I’ll try.” I gave Pope a reassuring smile as he passed me the key, still holding a look of uncertainty on his face.
“Uh, be careful.” I heard Kie tell John B from behind me. “I mean it.”
JJ offered me his hand as I jumped out of the boat but I just ignored it, still a little mad that he had forgotten about me the day before. I made eye contact with him for a moment and saw a look of confusion grace his features before disappearing. I began walking away from the boat as JJ waited a moment for John B to finish talking to Kie. I listened to them talking behind me.
“Just be so careful, John.” I heard JJ tease as I started making my way across the front lawn of the hotel.
“God, you're so weird.” John B replied.
“What was that about?”
“I don't know. Maybe she wants us to be careful?”
“Ever since she heard you're being threatened with exile, she's just been, like, <Oh! Be so careful, John B.>” JJ mimicked what Kie had told John B earlier as we started to climb the stairs to the second floor. “<Oh, just give me that John D already.> Just ask Iz she sees it too, right Iz?” JJ asked me.
I paused for a moment when I reached the top of the stairs, turning around to meet JJ’s eyes
“Are you done?” I asked in a sour tone.
“What?” He responded with confusion evident in his voice and the smile falling from his face. I rolled my eyes before turning around and beginning to count room numbers. “Why are you so mad at only me? What’d I do?”
“Dude.” I heard John B start saying. “You completely blew her off yesterday.”
I was curious what else they said to each other but their voices became muffled as I walked too far ahead. Stopping at the end of the hall in front of room twenty-nine. I turned to find the boys jogging towards me, John B gave me a small smile and JJ had a look that almost resembled remorse on his face.
“This is it?” John B asked as JJ took the key that I was holding up in front of me.
“Housekeeping.” JJ called out in a shrill voice knocking a few times on the door.
“Should we try it?” John B asked, pointing to the key in JJ’s hand.
“No power. No security cameras. No one's gonna know.” JJ reasoned as he pushed the key into the lock. It felt like we could still get in trouble if we were caught but before I could voice my concerns JJ was already half way into the room.
“Huh.” I muttered, as the two of us followed JJ in. It was dark and smelled of mildew, definitely not the kind of place someone would stay if they had the funds to buy a Grady-White.
“Check the bag. See if there's a name on there somewhere.” John B instructed JJ as I moved past the pair to open the blinds at the side of the room.
“A jacket.”
“No name on the jacket?”
“No. It's a nice jacket, though.”
“Definitely over 50. He's got New Balances.”
I listened to their conversation as I walked across the small room into the bathroom. As I moved through the bathroom and rustled through the medicine cabinet, I heard the beeping of a safe in the other room.
“Uh… JJ? Iz? You’re gonna want to see this” I heard John B call from the other room.
Entering the room I looked at John B first who was looking over to where JJ stood with wide eyes. Following John B’s line of sight my own eyes widened as I realized what JJ was holding.
“Is that a gun?” I asked as if it could be anything else.
“Put the gun back, JJ!” John B tried to reason with him.
“This is a fucking spendy gatt, man. Just…” JJ said, eyes wide like a kid in a candy store. “Bam! Bam!” He mimicked the sound of a gun as he pointed it around the room.
“JJ, we’re not stealing anything.” John B told him for the hundredth time.
“Just take a pic of me. Right here.” JJ pleaded with John B, but my attention had shifted to the sound of a rock landing on the window sill.
I pushed past the boys as they continued arguing with each other, and looked out the window.
“Cops. Cops!” I could see Kie and Pope whisper yell while they pointed in the direction of the door. Turning around quickly I waved at the boys to get their attention.
“Guys, the cops are here.” I told them in a hushed tone. John B moved towards the door to see if he could hear anything. “How are we gonna get out?” I asked them, feeling panic start to rise through my chest.
“Out the window?” John B suggested as he pushed open the small window as far as it would go.
With John B out first and standing to the right of the window, I followed quickly behind him moving to the left so that JJ could get out. In an attempt to keep us from being seen JJ pressed me against the wall of the motel, which meant that I was now pinned between him and the wall. My chest rose and fell unevenly as I squeezed my eyes shut hoping the cops couldn’t see us. As we we’re standing on the ledge I felt JJ’s hand grab on to mine and give it a reassuring squeeze.
“Listen Sweetheart, I’m sorry I ditched you yesterday. I didn’t mean to forget.” JJ whispered to me, his head was right next to my ear and I could feel his breath fan out against my skin as he spoke.
“As much as I appreciate your apology, I really don’t think this is the time JJ.” I whispered back terrified of every word that left my tongue.
“Yeah, yeah, you’re right, sorry.” JJ replied, shifting his weight slightly.
“Guys! Shut. Up.” John B whisper yelled from where he stood on the ledge.
As we both turned to look at John B I felt cold metal touch my free hand, startling me I pulled my hand back swiftly and as I did I heard a clattering as something fell from the ledge.
“JJ, tell me that wasn’t what I think it was?” I demanded as quietly as I could.
“Well you tell me what you think it was and then I’ll tell you it wasn’t.” He said and I could hear the smirk in his voice, shocking me that he could still be joking when we were about to be caught at any moment, I rolled my eyes at him.

After our narrow escape from the motel, myself and the Pogues were headed towards town, discussing what we were going to do next.
“The cops took everything like it was a crime scene.” John B stated still sounding shocked at what he had seen back at the motel.
“Did you guys find anything?” Pope asked us curiously. My gaze shifted to JJ as I already knew what he had taken.
“Did we find anything? No, I don't think so. Oh, yeah, we did.” JJ responded smiling as he held up the gun, and to my surprise a wad of cash. I let my head fall into my hands wondering how JJ could be so dumb.
“What the hell?” Pope asked standing, panic written all over his features.
“Dude, chill.” JJ started walking over to where Pope stood. “Better than cops having it.”
“I'm gonna lose my merit scholarship.”
“Hey, hey, hey. Sh, sh, sh, sh, sh.” JJ said, grabbing Pope by the shoulders in an attempt to calm him down. “At least you have us, right?”
“I'm living the nightmare.”

After a trip to the marina and witnessing Scooter Grubbs get taken away by a coroner, we were back at the Château trying to figure out what to do next.
“Okay. So, um... we didn't see anything.” Pope spoke up as he paced in front of us all. “We don't know anything. We need to have total and complete amnesia.”
“Actually, Pope's right for once.” JJ stated, looking at us all. “See, I agree with you sometimes.” He assured Pope. “Deny, deny, deny.”
“Guys, we can't keep that money.” Kie piped into the conversation. “We have to pass that off to Lana Grubbs. Otherwise, it's bad karma.”
“Bad karma to be implicated in a felony, too.” I added referring to the gun JJ was still in possession of.
“We gotta go dark.” Pope suggested.
“None of it makes sense.” John B finally said, breaking his silence. “This is Scooter Grubbs we're talking about. Same dude that's buying individual cigarettes at the Porthole. Shit, one time I saw this dude begging for change in the Save-A-Lot parking lot because he needed gas. We're talking about a dirtbag marina rat who's never had more than 40 bucks in his pocket, and all of a sudden, he's got a Grady-White? Just sayin'.”
“So how does a marina rat get a Grady-White?” I asked, thinking out loud.
“Prostitution.” Pope suggested making me laugh under my breath.
“Okay...” John B stated, trying to move past Pope's comment. “Or maybe they're trying to fly under the radar, no aerial surveillance. They don't do that stuff during a hurricane. What does that mean? JJ?”
“They were straight smugglin'.” JJ finished John B’s thought.
“Smugglin'.” John B confirmed. “And I guarantee there's a serious amount of contraband in that wreck.”
“For the record, if that is a smuggling ship with illegal contraband on the inside of it…” Pope said and I could tell he was thinking about all the terrible outcomes. “...it probably belongs to someone else.”
“Minor details.”
“They could come looking for it.” Pope warned. “Taking it would be catastrophically stupid.”
“Right. Well, stupid things have good outcomes all the time.” JJ reasoned holding up the money that he had now decided belonged to us. “All we need to do is figure out a way to get into the cargo hold of that wreck.”
“Until then, we just lay low. Just act normal.” John B added.
“Right. And how exactly do we do that?” I asked. I still felt like Pope was making a lot of good points that the others were not listening to.
“Kegger?” Kie suggested looking at the rest of us for confirmation.
🔅🔆🔅
You can't understand the Outer Banks without understanding the boneyard. It's kinda like a three-layer burrito. There's us and our friends, the working-class derelicts. Then, there are the Kooks, the rich second-homers. They're mostly from poncey-ass boarding schools, just rich trustafarian posers. Our natural enemies. And then, there are the Tourons. Totally clueless. Here for a week on vacation with their families. Chum for the sharks.
Later in the day after the sun had set, the kegger was coming to life, basically the entirety of the island's teen population was in attendance and the beach was getting pretty crowded. Earlier on I had been hanging around with JJ, all had been forgiven between us and we were back to cracking jokes.
Up until JJ spotted a girl he wanted to flirt with and I was left alone. Since then I had started chatting with a couple of Tourons who had taken one surfing lesson earlier in the week and now thought they knew everything about the sport. Desperate to make my escape I searched through the crowd for my friends. Just as I was about to make up an excuse I heard shouting from the water.
“Sorry, I have to go.” I told the pair lamely. “I think that’s my friends calling me.”
“Okay. Bye.” They replied as I walked away.
Much to my horror, once I had reached the shore it turned out to actually be my friends shouting, and the shouting had turned into a full out fight. I recognized John B in the water but the Kook he was fighting had their back facing me. I pushed my way through the crowd once I spotted Kie and made my way to stand beside her.
“What the hell is going on?” I asked, looking at her face which was covered in fear.
“Topper and John B started arguing and now they're trying to kill each other.” Kie answered, watching as the fight got worse. That’s when I noticed the Kook Princess, Sarah Cameron, trying to calm down her angry boyfriend.
I used to know Topper when I was young. We had been friends but when I had moved to the Cut we lost touch. Now as he stood over John B I barely recognized him. He wasn’t the young boy I had once known, now he was a cruel person who thought he was better than others just because his parents had money.
“Hey, John B, don't make me drown you like your old man, all right?” I heard Topper challenge John B.
After that comment I had had enough and I was desperately looking around the crowd trying to figure out what I could do to stop them. I felt useless as I definitely couldn’t just jump in there, I had no idea how to fight. But we had to do something before Topper killed John B.
As my eyes scanned the crowd I noticed JJ who was already looking at me. His once bright eyes looked dark and it seemed like he knew exactly what he was about to do. I shook my head as I tried to make my way over to him, but he was already stalking towards where Topper and John B fought. I had a feeling I knew what he was about to do but I didn’t want to believe it.
I held my breath as I heard the crowd go silent when JJ clicked the gun's safety off.
“Yeah, you know what that is.” JJ threatened as Topper pulled away from John B. “Your move, broski.”
“Come on. Chill, dude!” Topper responded, trying to reason with him.
“Put the gun down.” Sarah cried desperately.
“Did you say somethin', Princess?” JJ asked, not taking his eyes off of Topper.
“We're good. We're good.” Topper tried to tell him, raising his hands in surrender.
“Kie! Iz! Can you check your psycho friend, please?” I heard Sarah screaming behind me pulling me out of the trance I had been frozen in. I took a few steps closer to JJ but I didn’t want to get too close when he had a gun pointed at someone. I had seen him get in fights before but never like this, this was different. I really thought that he might kill Topper and that terrified me.
“JJ.” I spoke softly so as to not startle him. He turned to glance back at me but kept the gun pointed at Topper who was looking back at us. “Think about what you’re doing.” I continued speaking calmly, meanwhile I could hear Sarah practically sobbing behind me. “You have to let him go.” I said, at this JJ nodded ever so slightly before pulling the gun away from Topper.
“Okay, everyone, listen up! Get the hell off our side of the island!” JJ yelled into the crowd of people before shooting the gun into the air.
The second JJ moved Topper was out of sight and Sarah wasn’t far behind. While Kie and Pope began to berate JJ over his actions I ran into the water to go check on John B.
“Hey, are you okay?” I asked John B once I reached him, holding his shoulders so he wouldn’t fall back into the water. He mumbled back something incoherent as he swayed in my grasp. “Guys! Can you help?” I asked the three Pogues who still stood arguing behind me.
With their help we got John B out of the water and closer to the fire that had been started a while ago. We all sat silently there for sometime before John B was able to get up again and we all headed home.

After a sleepless night, we were all back together at the Château, I sat next to Kie as she lazily hit a pair of bongos that sat on the table between us and Pope. JJ was further away in the yard throwing god knows what into the grass. I stood up as I saw John B make his way over to us. Meeting him halfway between the main house and where the rest of our friends were I pulled him into a bone crushing hug.
“What was that for?” He asked, chuckling while he looked at me.
“I’m just glad to see you’re okay. I can’t lose you, any of you guys.” I explained making myself think back to last night.
“You can’t get rid of me that easily.” He joked trying to lighten the mood.
“Yeah, I know.” I said the smile returning to my face. “Hey, by the way I saw the cop car driving away this morning, is everything okay?”
“Eh, it’s alright Peterkin stopped by, told me to stay out of trouble and to clean up the house.” John B explained as we made our way over to the others. “Look, I'm callin' it off. All right?” John B announced to everyone. “Peterkin said, if I stay out of the marsh, she'll help me with DCS.”
“And you believed her?” JJ questioned.
“Yes, I believe her, JJ.”
“An actual cop, John B. You believed a cop.” He added, trying to make his point.
“All I gotta do is stay out of the marsh for a couple days, and she'll help me out. It doesn't help that your ass was the one shooting a gun.”
“You know what I should have done? Just let Topper drown your ass.”
“Topper was gonna drown me?”
“Sure looked like it.”
“Alright, calm down.” I spoke up trying to get them to stop.
“Come on. They always win, don't they, man? Kooks versus Pogues. They always, always win!” JJ started to raise his voice.
“Look, it's okay!” Kie reasoned, also trying to help me calm them down.
“No, it's not okay!” JJ argued, turning his attention to John B. “It is not! They don't want us to go down into the marsh. That means there's something valuable down there, and you know it. I know you do. And I understand why you don't wanna go. You're the golden boy. You got way too much to risk.” JJ added pointing a finger at Pope. “ And you...I mean, you're already rich as fuck anyway. Why would you bother?” He asked Kie. “But us three.” He finished looking at John B and I. “We got nothin' to lose!”
“I don't want to talk about this.” John B told JJ as he began to walk away.
“So that's it?” JJ asked and I could tell he was losing hope in John B.
“Just get out of my way, bro.”
“John B, listen to me. I have a plan.”
JJ telling us he had a plan? That was never a good start.
🔅🔆🔅
We all gathered around Kie who was inspecting the tanks that John B had stolen from the Cameron's. JJ had tried to argue that we were going to return them so technically we were just borrowing them but I didn’t think the Cameron's would see it that way or the cops they would inevitably call if they found out.
“This is empty. You took empty tanks? I…” Kie told John B sounding defeated. “Okay, this one's a quarter full. It's enough for one of us. Love it when a plan comes together. Does anybody know how to dive?”
“It's kind of a Kook sport.” JJ replied.
“I... read about it.” Pope responded cautiously.
“Great, Pope read about it, so someone's gonna die.” Kie reasoned.
“Look, y-you put the thing in your mouth and breathe. How hard could it be?” JJ asked.
“If you come up too fast, nitrogen gets into your blood, and you get the bends.” Pope told him.
“Bends like, bend over and…” JJ asked, making me roll my eyes at him.
“The bends kill you.” Pope said seriously and JJ straightened up.
“I can do it.” I finally said standing up at the front of the boat. “I went diving a few times with my dad when I was younger.”
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea.” JJ stated, a look of worry crossing his features.
“I’ll be fine, it’s like riding a bike, you don’t forget.” I reasoned. “Right?”
“Let me do some calculations real quick.” Pope said while he looked through his bag for a notebook.
“Are you serious? You’re gonna do some calculations right now?” John B teased Pope with a smile on his face.
“Hey, let the man do his calculations, alright?” JJ told John B before glancing over at me again.
“That boat's about 30 feet down. Okay.” Pope stated, thinking out loud. “So it'll take 25 minutes at that depth.”
“Twenty-five.” I confirmed half listening to him half focusing on keeping my hands from shaking, suffice to say I was a little nervous.
“Which means you need to make your safety stop at about... ten feet. All right? For two minutes.”
“Okay, ten feet, two minutes.” I confirmed, attempting to remember everything he was telling me.
Kie suddenly stood up from her spot and jumped off the side of the boat, disappearing into the dark water.
“What was that all about?” Pope asked, distracted.
“I don't know, but I liked it. A lot.” JJ commented.
“Anything else I need to know?” I asked, looking at the boys who were all very clearly still thinking about what Kie had just done.
“All right. Yeah. Uh, when you... uh, when you're down there, you look for the cargo hold.” John B stated remembering where he was.
“You stick this thing inside and twist and pull, okay?” JJ told me, holding up a key and miming it in the air.
“Yeah I think I know how a lock works JJ.” I told him sarcastically, as I took the key from his grasp.
“Hey! I tied my T-shirt to the anchor chain about ten feet down.” Kie said finally emerging from the water. “It's where you need to do your safety stop.”
“Okay, thanks.” I responded giving her a smile before pulling the heavy tank onto my back. I could barely pull the straps tight because of how much my hands were shaking. Seeing me struggle, JJ made his way over to me and finished strapping me in. Giving a thumbs up as he took a step back.
“Keep an eye on this.” Pope said, pointing to the console attached to the tank before handing it to me. “You need to make sure you have enough air to decompress.”
“Okay, how much do I need?” I asked.
“Unclear.” He answered truthfully after a brief pause. “Breathe as little as possible.”
“Zen. Think Zen, you know?” JJ commented trying to get me to relax. He took my hand in his while I looked around at everyone.
“Yeah. Got it.” I responded, moving closer to the edge of the boat.
“Hey, if we get caught in the marsh, we're basically screwed, so... better get a move on.” Pope said. I knew he was just trying to be helpful but it did not help me feel very Zen.
I was about to pull down my mask from where it was sitting on top of my head when I realized JJ still had a tight grip on my hand.
“I’m gonna need this.” I told him, holding up our interlocked hands.
“Oh, yeah, sorry about that.” He said, awkwardly letting go of my hand and rubbing the back of his neck. “Be careful, yeah?”
“I’ll be fine.” I responded, but I wasn’t sure if I was trying to convince him of myself. “Diver down?”
“Diver down.” My friends all confirmed as I pulled the mask down over my face before jumping into the water.

A couple of minutes after Iz had dove off the edge of the Pogue, the rest of the group sat waiting anxiously in silence for their friend to return. Well everyone but JJ who was currently pacing back and forth across the floor of the small boat, seemingly mumbling something under his breath about how Iz would be fine. The other Pogues watched, baffled as to how he could do things like this and yet still not realize how he truly felt about the girl who had just dove into the water.
JJ and the rest of the Pogues were pulled out of their thoughts by the sound of sirens and the flashing lights of a police boat.
“Shit.” Kie said, alerting everyone that the cops were pulling up next to them.
“Guys, that's the police.” Pope said, the panic in his voice rising with each word.
“Oh, you gotta be kidding me.” John B said standing up.
“Yep, that's the police. Just act frickin' normal.” JJ confirmed what they were all seeing, meanwhile acting the least natural the Pogues had ever seen him. JJ never panicked. “Evening, officers.”
“How you kids doing?” Deputy Shoupe asked the group, passing a rope over to connect the boats. “You know the marsh is closed?”
“No. No. Wow. I didn't know that. Why... Why is it closed?” Pope asked, trying to look calm.
“Well, we're conducting a search out here. Boat went down. Seen anything?”
“No. No boats. No.” John B responded.
“Where's your other friend you always hang out with? Who’s that, Bailer’s kid, uh, Isabella? She here?” Shoupe asked.
“She's working.” Kie lied.
“Hm.” Shoupe hummed, not entirely convinced. “I'm gonna check your little boat out.”
“Yeah, hop aboard.” John B said, waving a hand. “You wanna check... uh, check her out.”
Meanwhile below the surface Iz had found what she was looking for and began unlocking the hold.
After Shoupe had inspected their life jackets, he made his way to the front of the boat, putting his sunglasses on and looking out onto the water. From the back of the boat JJ also scanned the water, he thought that he saw something move beneath the surface and prayed that Shoupe hadn’t seen the same thing.
🔅🔆🔅
After getting into the hold I found a small bag and took it with me as I swam towards the anchor of the boat so I could make my safety stop before heading back up.
From my spot ten feet below the surface I looked up, noticing the shadow of a new boat and someone looking into the water. I squeezed my eyes shut for a moment as if that would help me keep from getting caught before opening them and looking at the console in my left hand. There was less than thirty seconds of air left and I was panicking even more than before.
Just in time the figure left and moments later the second boat disappeared. With my last breath of air I swam to the surface pulling off my mask as I took a huge breath of fresh air.
“There she is!” JJ pointed at me letting out a sigh of relief. “Don’t scare us like that!”
“How'd it go down there?” John B asked as I made my way to the ladder on the back of the boat.
“Did you find anything?” Pope asked, pulling me up.
“Did I find anything?” I answered the question by holding up the small duffle bag that I had found in the hold.
“Yeah, there we go! That's my girl!” JJ hollered scooping me up into a hug as John B took the bag from me.
“Jeez.” I laughed as JJ let go of me again and Kie made her way to my side.
“You okay?” She asked, a look of concern painting over her usual happy expression.
“Yeah, I ran out of air.” I said trying not to worry her but realizing my words did the opposite of that.
“You scared the shit out of me.” JJ said, snaking an arm around my waist. I knew he just thought of me as a friend but his actions still gave me butterflies, it was nice to know he cared.
“Yeah, the cops were up here, but, uh... we took care of 'em.” Pope informed me.
“Hey, guys? Guys, bogey, two o'clock.” Kie said, pulling us from our previous conversation.
“Do you recognize that boat?” Pope asked.
“I've never seen it.”
“What are they doing here? The marsh is closed.” John B asked and I couldn’t help but smile at the irony of his words, after all we knew better than to be there and yet here we were.
“Let's not stick around and find out.” JJ stated, moving to the front of the boat.
“Should we wait on 'em?” Pope asked.
“Are you joking?” I asked, helping start the boat up. “JJ, hurry up.”
“Guys, don't wait for me. Go.” JJ told us as he pulled the anchor up as fast as he could.
“Go right.” I suggested to John B who was standing behind the wheel, thinking if we went further into the marsh they might not follow us.
“Let's go!” Kie rushed as the boat turned behind us. “Hey, guys, they're following us.”
“This can't be good.” I said as JJ moved to stand beside me.
“Dude, you gotta go faster!” JJ urged John B as the boat began to gain on us.
“I'm going!” He said while trying to maneuver the marsh that was filled with thick weeds.
Looking back I noticed that one of the men had leant down and was now standing back up holding something I could quite make out.
“Uh, guys what is that?” I asked as everyone but John B looked back.
“What the…” Pope started but the rest of his question died out at the sound of a gunshot.
As everyone one dropped down to the floor of the boat I felt as if I had been pushed, there was a heavy weight on my chest.
“Holy shit!” I heard Kie mutter as I opened my eyes realizing that JJ was on top of me. This was now the second time in the past two days that I had been pinned between JJ and another surface. Had it been under different circumstances I might have been able to enjoy it.
“John B, get down!” I heard JJ yell as I felt the vibrations of his voice echo through my own chest.
“We're gonna die!” I heard Pope say hopelessly from beside me.
“Shit! Pope, move.” Kie muttered, I couldn’t see much but I thought I saw Kie walking to the back of the boat carrying something.
“Get down, Kie!” John B yelled as the man in the other boat continued to shoot at us.
Then the shooting stopped as the sound of the other boat died out.
“Oh my god.” Pope sighed, sounding very relieved as everyone started to get back up except for JJ.
“JJ?” I asked, looking up at him. His face turned towards me, inches away from mine as he hovered over me.
“Yeah?” He asked, sounding completely oblivious.
“You gonna let me get up?” I asked, smiling.
“Oh, yeah, sorry about that Sweetheart.” He said standing before he offered me his hand. A look flashed across his face that I couldn’t quite recognize, if I didn’t know better I would think it was disappointment?
🔅🔆🔅
After arriving back at the Château we all gathered on the dock. To take a look at what I had found in the hold of the Grady-White.
“What do you think it is?” Kie asked us.
“Gotta be money, right?” John B responded with another question.
“That or a couple of keys with street value from the low-to-mid-mils!” JJ added.
“Can we please just open the bag?” Pope let out looking impatient.
“Wow, Pope. That's a rare outburst of emotion.” John B teased as he stretched out the wait even longer.
“Okay. You guys are literally killing me with anticipation.” I said in the same boat as Pope, urging them to hurry up.
“Alright Sweetheart, calm down.” JJ said from beside me putting a hand on my arm to calm me down.
“We almost died over this.” Pope added to our argument to open the bag faster.
John B opened the bag pulling out a metal canister. After opening that too he let the contents spill out onto his hand. Disappointment rose up as we looked to see that all it was was an old compass. While taking a second look I thought that I recognized it from somewhere but wasn’t sure.
“Oh, wow. Yup. That's about right.” Pope stated, standing from his crouched position. “Good job, everybody. We found a compass.”
“Dude, what? It's not worth anything.” JJ told John B who was staring at the compass in awe.
“This was my father's.” Were the only words that left John B’s lips.

After the disappointment of not finding much of anything after we all risked our lives we all headed home. Entering my house the sun was setting outside and it seemed empty. But my Mom’s car was parked just off the road and I could hear faint talking coming from the back of the house. I walked through the living room and kitchen, past the stairs that led to the loft which was my Mom’s room. Past my own room and the bathroom before coming to a stop in front of my little sister’s door. Leaning against the door frame, I saw my Mom reading Emmy a book by candle light, I assumed that the power was still out.
Walking back to the main room I started to make myself a sandwich, realizing that I hadn’t eaten much of anything all day. Just as I was about to take the first bite. I heard Emmy’s door close and my Mom entered the room, holding a candle in her hand.
“Hey, Honey.” She greeted me as she set down the candle. “How was your day?”
“Good.” I responded in between bites of the sandwich I had made. “Pretty uneventful.”
“Really?” She asked, almost surprised. “I saw Shoupe on my way out of town and he said that he saw your friends out on the marsh when they were doing their search for Scooter’s boat. He also said that you weren't there. Your friends told him something about you working, but I didn’t know you were working at all for a few days.”
“Oh really?” I said trying to figure out how to cover the real story up. “Um, Mr. Cameron came down and asked if I could pick up another shift. I guess his kids have been spending a lot of time inside since the storm so it was a bit of a mess over there.”
“He drove all the way down here?”
“Yeah well since the phone lines are down he couldn’t call.”
“Huh, it seems strange he would come all the way down when he could just wait a couple more days for us to come over.”
“Yeah well it was really bad. I would have taken pictures if my phone wasn’t dead.”
“Oh no I don’t need pictures, I’ve met those kids and cleaned that house, I believe that they could make a terrible mess.” She said seemingly believing everything I was telling her, she paused for a moment before asking another question. “You don’t know why your friends were in the marsh do you?”
“Well” I started, thinking about what I could say that would get us all off the hook. “They were actually waiting to pick me up. Yeah. Cause I went up to Figure Eight with Mr. Cameron but I didn’t want to make him drive me all the way home. So they hung out in the marsh I guess while they waited.”
“How’d you call them?” Mom asked, picking apart my story.
“Walkie Talkies.” I blurted out. “You know the ones that Heyward got Pope and I a few years ago? And that must have been why they were in the marsh even though it was closed. You know cause the walkie talkies only work for a certain radius, and the Cameron house is probably too far from here.”
“Yeah I guess so.” She said moving towards me to grab my now empty plate.
“Thanks.” I said, as she put my plate in the sink. “I think I’m gonna head back over to John B’s if that's okay.”
“Of course just don’t forget to sleep at some point. You do still require sleep.” She told me.
“I know, I’ll see you later.”
“Love you!” I heard her call after me as I closed the door and made the short walk over to John B’s where I saw him and JJ lounging on the porch.

Stubborn Independence
TITLE: Stubborn Independence
CHAPTER NO./ONE SHOT: 1/10
AUTHOR: brightsun-and-darkmidnight
ORIGINAL IMAGINE:
Imagine Loki struggling to adjust to someone who is independent and insists on paying for themselves all the time, even if it is a struggle sometimes. They need to do everything on their own. They never ask for help and refuse help. Just imagine Loki really wanting to spoil this person. Imagine how creative he would get to make life easier on this person who has captivated him.
+
Imagine being a talented singer at your local club. Loki comes in one night with Thor and the others (he’d rather be anywhere else but who turns down free drinks?) and gets ensnared in the voice of the beautiful singer on stage. Suddenly, his interest (and arousal) are more than piqued.
+
Imagine getting into a petty fight with Loki, so in retaliation, he puts everything on the top shelf where you can’t reach?
AUTHOR’S NOTES: College AU. Loki is determined to take over Odin’s company. He works hard and has a strict schedule for success. However, with the interference of Thor and the other four, Loki’s plans are often interrupted so they can play matchmaker.

 ~ ~ ENJOY  ~ ~
Fandral smiled brightly with a loud laugh and in a desperate time to prove him wrong, Loki looked at his schedule with a smart remark on his tongue. Loki’s smile disappeared quickly. Damn. He did have the same class as Fandral.
Fandral smiled that bright smile and then winked to the side and Loki heard the high pitched giggles of flirting women, “Shall we walk together when classes start next week? Perhaps I could get you a date this year?”
With an eye roll and voice laced with sarcasm Loki replied, “yes because I want help from you."
Sif held her hand out to Loki for his schedule. Thor insisted earlier she could mark where everyone would be this semester for easy communication. So, unwillingly Loki handed it to her knowing he was sentencing himself to public outings instead of the comfort of his room with books. He pondered if he should get out of those outings or try to get out of his room. Perhaps he would meet someone, or a few people, to hang out with instead of his brother during meal times.
Thor clapped Loki’s back, "this is going to be the time of our lives. College is full of possibilities. Last year was such a great time for the five of us! There were plenty of people I met! Last year all you did in your free time was study. Lighten up Brother, and develop friendships.”
Siff spoke up after scribbling on schedules, “Or he could get the best grades, and the honors scholarship for extra money.” Sif gave Thor a raised eyebrow after he chuckled, then she shrugged going back to scribbling. She muttered, “graduate top class and make more money than you. Support himself and whoever stumbles into his life.”
Valstagg’s boisterous laughter caught everyone’s attention until his eyes darted in the direction of a food truck. He mumbled, “That would be quite the stumble for Loki to notice.”
Hogun’s lip twitches a smidge as he looked at the schedules with Siff and marking them. Loki’s schedule was back and he looked it over. He had the 8am class with Thor and knew the idiot would miss too much class from the way Thor groaned over a class first thing on a Monday. Loki had the damn extracurricular art class that Fandral was also in.
Loki was excited for art class because he practiced occasionally by drawing what he imagined a scene looked like from his leisure readings. Although Loki was terrible at drawing realistic details, nothing stopped him from trying. This class filled a block in his major which further helped him decide to pursue some knowledge for his little hobby. No one would ever see such things due to drawing being a secret… well, for now anyway. Fandral was likely to tell everyone of his poor skills once their shared classroom of a three hour long session two times a week.
Fandral inquired, “so…Sif are we going to come to your dorm room for lunch?”
Sif smirked, “the invitation goes to everyone but you.”
“How cruel to keep me away from the sight of your beautiful dorm mate.”
Loki turned as he claimed he would see them later. Loki strolled to the dinning hall. It was a typical day; annoying brother and his friends, people all around him talking animatedly with others, some more intimately touching with the hold of hands or lips locked together. Loki tore his gaze from those people and observed where he was, and why he was there and NOT for some romantic adventure.
The buildings seemingly new due to constant cleaning and repairs. The pathways that seemed to be expanding due to hurried people walking beside the sidewalk trying not to be late. His night owl of a brother for example was always in a rush and did not go with the pace of everyone else. Otherwise, the grass was perfectly manicured. There were areas for decorative flowers, bushes, as well as well placed trees.
Individuals gathered under trees seeking some comfort in the cooler shade. Loki glanced upwards to the sky that was currently cloudy. Then the sun shone thus pouring warmth onto him and momentarily blinding him.
Loki was sure he somehow ran into something but with a curse word flying out of someone’s mouth realization struck instantly this was not an object. Loki instinctively held his hands out to catch the person. Short hair in blended layers caught the sunlight in wonderful variations of browns. The hair seemed to flow slowly as Loki hastily pulled the person closer to prevent a fall. Warm leather in his hands that helped with the grasp. Once stabilized Loki glanced down and noticed the petite and plus size girl in his grasp.
Her eyes were shielded by huge sunglasses, her full cheeks framed by hair placed perfectly, except for a few strands dancing near her lips. A full lower lip pressed to her thin upper one as she pushed out of his grasp.
The trance seemed to end as Loki watched the girl pick up her phone. The glistening pieces around the device let Loki know instantly the screen was shattered. The woman ran her fingers through her hair and Loki was convinced that must be how her hair was supposed to be due to it looking better than before. Her eyebrows angled as she tapped on the phone and it seemed to be working.
Loki had money to replace her phone, even get his which was the newest model of over a thousand dollars. His parents had money due to his father, Odin, owning a software corporation that was supposed to be handed down to either Thor or Loki. Of course depending on who learned the most in college from their business majors. Loki actually had plenty of money he earned himself due to taking a position to work in his father’s business, a branch closest to the campus in an attempt to learn more. To inherit the corporation was the goal and was the reason he spent too much time in his room, practicing programming for his second major in computer science.
Loki quickly replied as soon as it registered, “I am sorry. I didn’t-”
The woman’s face turned to his with lightning speed and her lips parted with a harsh tone, “if you say you didn’t see me because I am short I will bring you down to my level with a punch to your gut.”
Loki blinked and finally noticed how short the woman was. He estimated a little over a foot smaller than himself due to him being able to rest his arm on her head easily, if he were to even attempt it. However with the fiery look he was getting, Loki stammered, “I can get you a new phone. Any phone you want.”
The woman was already tapping on her phone quickly as if sending a text. A few strands of her hair danced in her face but she seemed to ignore it. Loki however, needed to push back a single hair back in place to maintain his professional and clean appearance. Loki was not sure if she was ignoring him or not and he absentmindedly cleared his throat.
The dark haired woman placed her phone in a pocket, ran her other hand through her hair that parted in a different way..that was visually satisfactory as well. Her leather jacket protesting with sounds of attempts to stretch as she crossed her arms. Her eyebrows rose above her glasses and her bottom lip pressed to the thinner one. She seems to be annoyed, arguably she had every reason to have that right. She said nothing, nor did she make any attempt to even try to speak.
Loki wasn’t sure if this little ball of fire even heard a word he said. He spoke again as he took a small writing tablet from his inner coat pocket, “here is my information, we could meet later and you can pick out any phone you wish. There is a business not far from here that I work at-”
A casual, but with irritation mixed, voice spoke, “Not interested. I have the insurance on this one to have it replaced.”
Loki glanced up but did not see her. He turned and she was already walking away, quickly. Loki took long strides to her as he handed the woman the paper with his name, number, and location information to meet. The woman took the paper and seemed to be looking at it with a tilt of her head towards the paper but Loki already seen her eyelashes high up due to her obviously looking at the path she was on. The woman did nothing to stop her quick pace that Loki’s long legs easily kept up with.
As she crumpled up the paper and threw it in the recycling bin she spoke, “Thanks for the offer but I will pass.”
Loki’s eyebrows furrowed, “pardon?”
The small woman stopped as she replaced the sunglasses to her head. “Can you see now that I don’t want your help?”
Big eyes that were sharp and harsh with angled eyebrows. Eyelashes so thick they seemed to cast their own shadows among her face. Bright green eyes with flecks of dark brown and an inner iris of honey gold that stemmed into the outer green.
“You just cost me a ton of work to replace a dumbass phone. Nice work by the way to try to get me to call you. Clever plan, but it’s not something I fall for.”
“If you would let me help-”
The woman interrupted him, again with a scoff.
All Loki wanted to do was help her. Atleast to replace what he had broken. Everyone else would jump at the latest phone with the best camera and larger screen. Top notch software that had lighting quick responses. A phone that stored everything for Loki; His contacts, everything in his calendar, personal alarms for daily routines, apps that helped with maintaining his body physique, and importantly he had access to the school web pages for homework-In conclusion, Loki’s phone was his life.
Loki tries again for a chance to talk quickly.
She waved her hands, palms to him and waved them with her head down, “Uh huh. Nope. Go try to woo someone else with your good looks of, ‘tall, dark, and handsome.’” Her eyes met his as her hands gestured to him and her eyes skimmed over him briefly with the burning rage behind them. “There are a ton of people out there to fall for someone to take care of them with your fancy handwriting that obviously comes from a prestigious schooling. As well as your expensive clothes.”
Loki’s mouth parted and then shut firmly. “You make accusations based on nothing but a few things. Maybe you should try not to judge a book by its cover.”
She rose an eyebrow, “how? Over dinner while playing some Q and A?”
Loki rose his eyebrows in shock and his mouth parted slightly. Loki did not miss a chance though, “If it could even things out. Perhaps.”
She scoffed and put her glasses back in place over her eyes, “I would pay for myself anyway.”
Loki gesture between them before she would turn, “You think that would make this even?”
“How about you just read my lips and understand you don’t owe me anything.” Her eyebrows rose over the glasses with a forced smile, “we good now?”
Loki stared at the woman in disbelief. “If you insist everything is ok but-”
The woman replied with a curt nod and side smile, “Everything is great. Try to have a good day.”
Loki looked elsewhere not believing he was going to let her leave, “I wish you well and give many apologies.”
The woman turned when her phone went off, “I have to go. Bye.” She did not look back but greeted the person on the other line with a happy melodic, “hel~lo! Sorry I am late. I bumped into someone.”
Loki raised an eyebrow at the odd change but paid no attention to it as he went to the dining hall for food. Loki was going to enjoy some of his remaining free time with a large serving of sweets before returning to his room in solitude before Thor, Fandral, and Hogun returned to their combined space. Loki thanked the school for having the set up of separate bedrooms, however cursed the common small kitchen and livingroom that he had to walk through to use one of the bathrooms.
They would always try to get him to join in their “fun” of watching each other play a fighting game while they drank energy drinks. Hogun would go to bed at a reasonable time but the other two would stay up talking loudly about the damn game until they went out to a bar.
Sometimes Loki would join in a few games of cards just to take some of their money. It got to the point where everyone agreed to use just change instead of dollar bills.
Loki smirked as he remembered to take the vase full of coins to the change machine, “Idiots…”
Loki ate alone and no one bothered him either. He did watch as others around him talking cheerfully. A friend might be nice to spend some time with once in a while. However, Loki’s phone buzzing in his pocket with his schedule alarm to start practicing programming made him remember he was not there for companionship. He was at college to get an education.
Loki picked up after himself and walked swiftly to his dormitory, swiped his ID card to get through doors and finally his pin password for his shared space with the others. Loki stomach sunk when the lights were still off and no one was there. He noted the feeling as odd while he walked in a daze to his room. He shut his bedroom door off to the rest of the world and readied himself for an hour of programming.
Loki programmed for about an hour and a half to figure out something new he stumbled onto. Loki needed a shower. Something about programming made him feel dirty, uncomfortable, and needing to feel fresh again. Loki’s cursed phone rang for the third time since he was getting ready to relax with a book. The most annoying sound he had on his phone was Thor’s ringtone. Loki purposely hit the end button to hang up and force the call to his mailbox. Grabbing a book and sitting in his comfortable desk chair Loki’s daily peace began.

2020 Goals Check in
Hey friends! It is officially 6 months since the start of 2020 (even though this year feels so much longer) and so I’ve decided to check in and update everyone on the progress of my goals. Because of COVID, some of my goals can’t be done which is unfortunate because I tried to make my goals easier to achieve this year. But this pandemic is out of my control and I’m going to try to meet the goals I can still meet! That being said, I considered altering or replacing those goals but I’m going to hold off on that because like everyone else, I don’t know how much worse this year is going to get. Therefore I won’t know what mental space I’ll be in to complete projects. Without further ado, thanks for reading and let’s get into the goals!
1. Graduate College! This actually isn’t a given because I’m trying to graduate a semester early so I have to get my credits done and everything lined up. I’m not going to be mad if I don’t graduate early because I’ll just go study abroad that 2nd semester but it’d save me a couple thousand from tuition.
So this goal will be incomplete/omitted. Even though technically I would have to complete Fall 2020 semester to achieve this--I applied for a study abroad scholarship in my school for January 2021 and as you can see, if I graduate in fall 2020, I’d be an alum and not a student so I can’t go on that trip. So my school said I can go if I pay for the trip out of pocket or if I don’t stay a second semester, they’re not paying for the scholarship. I did the math when it comes to adding a second semester and in terms of student loans and time/effort from taking summer classes (this summer) and it’s worth it for me to go on this trip in January and go part time in the spring. So I’ll just be graduating in 4 years like everyone else in my class and that’s fine :)
2. Apply to study/volunteer abroad. I go to a small school and 70% of our student body goes abroad at some point. Our entire month of January is a separate term that you can take one class, travel, or just take off the entire month. But you have to take 3 of these “Janterms” and if I’m only here for 3 ½ years, I’ve had to take 3 classes and I don’t have a 4th year to travel next January. So I will apply to a summer program where my school will pay for me to go volunteer out of the US. I hope to go to Ivory Coast (where my mom is from) but likely, I’ll go to Ghana because of their volunteer programs. I’m definitely applying to go to Africa though. This goal doesn’t mean I have to get in; just that I have to turn in my application.
This goal is complete but this goal was affected by COVID. I applied to the summer program and I got in but COVID happened and I was informed that it was cancelled. But silver lining, like I mentioned above, I got a different scholarship to study abroad in January 2021 and by then, COVID exposure should be lowered (honestly at this rate, I can’t be sure so I shouldn’t say that) so I’ll get to go out of the country next year.
3. Save up for a car. Again, doesn’t mean I have to buy one (though I need one). Just to save.
Goal is in progress (sort of). I haven’t saved a significant amount because I lost my summer job/internship because of COVID but I’m still applying places. Even if I don’t get a summer job, I’ll go back to my jobs on campus in the fall--my school is confirmed opening in the fall btw--and I can continue to save.
4. Apply to graduate school. I plan on applying to Boston University in the summer through a joint grad program my school has with them. I’m only applying to that one school because the program will give me 25% off the tuition and grad school will put me in significant debt lmao.
I can’t submit my application until fall (I was wrong about the application being due in the summer) so this goal is incomplete.
5. Read 10 books.
Incomplete. I’ve read 3/10 books so far. I’ve read The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater, and I am on the last three chapters of Maze Runner. I rated The Red Queen 3/5 and I won’t be continuing that series. I rated the Raven Boys 4.5/5 and I’m not sure if I’ll be continuing the series. It was good, I’m just not interested in the lore/quest that the characters have but I’m willing to read it whenever someone returns the second book to my library but I’m not going to purchase a copy. I’m not done with the Maze Runner to rate it properly but I do like it.
6. Submit a short story to 5 magazines/ competitions. Idk if this will be a new short story or old-probably new because all my short stories are too long and I can’t submit them because very few take over 5k words.
Incomplete. Haven’t even attempted to write a new short story lmao.
7. Send The Island to Betas. More info about this to come. What you need to know is that I freaked out, didn’t send it and I’m a dummy.
Complete!
8. Draft Knocking on Death’s Door.
Incomplete but I’m debating on writing this for Camp Nano this July. I wanted to read some third person/books similar to the story first. I also need to work on the outline some more but again, this is half way check in so I have a whole six month to decide and finally write this book.
Like I mentioned earlier, I am going to omit the goal I can’t do because of COVID so with that in my mind, I’ve completed 3 out of 7. I have the rest of the year to complete the rest of my goals so I will update this at the end of December :)

Loki's mouth parted and then shut firmly. "You make accusations based on nothing but a few things. Maybe you should try not to judge a book by its cover."
She rose an eyebrow, "how? Over dinner while playing some Q and A?"
Loki rose his eyebrows in shock and his mouth parted slightly. Loki did not miss a chance though, "If it could even things out. Perhaps."
She scoffed and put her glasses back in place over her eyes, "I would pay for myself anyway."
Loki gesture between them before she would turn, "You think that would make this even?"
"How about you just read my lips and understand you don't owe me anything." Her eyebrows rose over the glasses with a forced smile, "we good now?"
Loki stared at the woman in disbelief. "If you insist everything is ok but-"
The woman replied with a curt nod and side smile, "Everything is great. Try to have a good day."
Loki looked elsewhere not believing he was going to let her leave, "I wish you well and give many apologies."
The woman turned when her phone went off, "I have to go. Bye." She did not look back but greeted the person on the other line with a happy melodic, "hel~lo! Sorry I am late. I bumped into someone."
They would always try to get him to join in their "fun" of watching each other play a fighting game while they drank energy drinks. Hogun would go to bed at a reasonable time but the other two would stay up talking loudly about the damn game until they went out to a bar.
Sometimes Loki would join in a few games of cards just to take some of their money. It got to the point where everyone agreed to use just change instead of dollar bills.
Loki smirked as he remembered to take the vase full of coins to the change machine, "Idiots…"
Loki ate alone and no one bothered him either. He did watch as others around him talking cheerfully. A friend might be nice to spend some time with once in a while. However, Loki's phone buzzing in his pocket with his schedule alarm to start practicing programming made him remember he was not there for companionship.
Loki's cursed phone rang for the third time since he was getting ready to relax with a book. The most annoying sound he had on his phone was Thor's ringtone. Loki purposely hit the end button to hang up and force the call to his mailbox. Grabbing a book and sitting in his comfortable desk chair Loki's daily peace began.

Start Writing Strategically
It is no secret that writing regularly is the key to becoming a great writer. We have been told over and over again that we need to write x-amount of words a day or free-write for y-amount of time. These are certainly useful tactics but can be hard to keep up. Maybe you’ve tried these before and stopped after not making the progress you wanted. That doesn’t mean you are a bad writer or lazy. It just means that you’re in need of some strategy and structure.
If you’d rather watch a video than read a blog, check out our video on the same topic here.
Part of establishing this new writing habit involves some psychological trickery. We are intelligent human beings, but we are also animals. There is the logical part of our brain that says things like “I should go to bed before midnight” and “I should eat fewer french fries.” But there is also the primitive part that only cares about food, water, and reproduction.
We need to be very aware of this part of ourselves. We constantly have a voice inside our heads that is looking for immediate gratification, and sadly writing doesn’t always provide that. Our goal is to combat that part of ourselves in a way that establishes a permanent and beneficial new routine.
This means we will need to address how we form new habits. Humans are incredibly habitual. Our brains reward us for doing things on a regular basis, which can work to our benefit and to our detriment. If you decide you want to start writing and just do it whenever inspiration strikes, you are setting yourself up for failure. Find time to regularly write. I know that’s easier said than done, but there are ways to help you establish a new routine.
Finding Time
Often when we start something new, we just find a time in our schedule and throw it wherever it fits best, but we don’t pay attention to an important question: What were we doing with that time before? Podcaster and Youtuber CGP Grey has a great theory on this. He says that to effectively establish a new habit, we need to be time neutral. When we add new things to our schedule, we need to take equivalent things out. Otherwise, we will tend to revert to whatever filled that space before.
Tumblr media
Maybe you have a lot of free time and think this won’t be an issue for you, but we still fill our free time in habitual ways. No matter what our schedule looks like, something will likely have to go. We need to be careful about what we choose, though. Some habits are stronger than others, and it may be easier and more effective to remove one rather than another. We must remain aware of the primitive beast that lurks within.
Here’s a personal example: When I was in college, I wanted to start working out. I tried to start multiple times, to no avail. I would go whenever it worked for my schedule and never established a consistent workout routine. After a couple years of false starts, I came across CGP Grey’s theory. I looked at my schedule and saw how full it was. Classes, internships, homework, and media production filled almost every moment of every day.
I realized that if I wanted to get serious about working out, something had to go. I was working morning radio at my university’s student station, and I decided my time was up there. I quit the station and decided that early mornings were for the gym. I was able to make a time neutral change to my schedule, and I was actually able to keep with it!
Address Roadblocks
It will no doubt take some experimenting to establish a new schedule. We all have different inclinations and habits, and we may need to play around and see what works. It is important to record what does and doesn’t work. If we stay aware of the things that keep us from writing, then we can plan for them and adjust accordingly.
Tumblr media
Identify the things that we think will help us maintain the habit and the things that hold us back. As we start to see these tendencies play out over and over again then we can really start to address them.
To continue my example from earlier: I actually didn’t just start working out regularly right out of the gate. I fell into the trap that many people fall into when it comes to exercise. Day one, I hit it hard then woke up the next day super sore and didn’t go back. This caused a few more false starts and the ever-familiar “I’ll try again next week.” I would get upset at myself for not working through the soreness which would lead to self-doubt about the whole situation.
Eventually, I came up with a new plan: start small. I decided not to work out so much that I got sore, because I knew I wouldn’t go to the gym the next day if I did. That was when I actually started hitting the gym on a regular basis, and I was able to slowly build up to where  I wanted to be. I identified the things that kept me from what I wanted to do and addressed them.
In terms of writing, I know that my phone has often been an issue. It is a grand distraction. Every little notification has the ability to completely derail me. Step 1 for me was putting it on do not disturb mode, and while that helped, it didn’t completely resolve my issues. I would still instinctually pick up my phone and start scrolling through some app designed to steal my attention. So I downloaded an app designed to block distracting apps during my writing time.
That helped a lot. Sometimes I still find myself still disabling that app and scrolling anyway, but at this point, if I am having a particularly hard time with my phone, I just put it in the other room. Even small things like that can help us stay consistent and effective.
An important thing to address here is the feeling of self-doubt caused by failure to stick to our new habit. It is inevitable, and we all feel it. It is hard to distance our self-worth from our failures, but if we stay aware of what caused us to fail, then we haven’t failed at all. We’ve learned. In the words of Adam Savage, “Failure is always an option.” Establishing a new habit is incredibly difficult, and just because you’ve been unsuccessful in the past doesn’t mean you always will be. Take those failed attempts, see what caused them, and then address it.
Goals
Our brains love to hit goals. When we hit a goal we’ve set, our brain will reward us for it in the form of chemicals. As we associate these chemical hits with a certain task, we will be more likely to do a task again. When we eat food with a lot of sugar, our brains reward us with dopamine, so we tend to really like sugar!
Tumblr media
If you start setting and reaching writing goals, you can trick your brain to reward you for writing. This helps change your habit from something that your logical brain wants into something that the primitive brain also craves. Turn writing into sugar!
As with anything else, we need to be strategic. People like Stephen King will tell you “write 1000 words a day,” but you might be setting yourself up for failure if that’s where you start. Start with something manageable and stick to it. Writing 1000 words a day will no doubt help you become a better writer, but not if you aren’t able to do it consistently. When it comes to setting goals, it’s important to be somewhat conservative.
If you set goals that you aren’t likely to accomplish, you will experience the opposite of the desired effect. Your brain will start to associate the failure of not hitting goals with writing and will be dis-incentivized from doing it. We need to set attainable goals and increase them over time. Then we can work our way to 1000 words a day or whatever your daily goal is.
Starting writing can be incredibly hard. It isn’t as easy as “just doing it.” Once we become conscious of the things that hold us back, we can really start to hone our craft. Having a consistent writing plan will provide a path for you to improve. Obviously, there are other things we can do along the way to help we’ll address in future blog posts, but the first step is starting.
Don’t forget to put your plan in action with our Let’s Find Time worksheet. If you have any questions or comments, join the discussion on our Discord! For more writing advice, check out our YouTube videos on the Campfire Technology YouTube Channel.

Once you reach the dorms you go straight to your room, Morgan closing the door behind you while you take off your clothes to put on your sleeping gown. You only look back at her when she speaks up again, you are already in your bed, reading a book.
"I need you for this plan (Y/N). You are going to be very important. I just need to get some more information and I'll share my plan with all of you."
"I still don't think this is a good idea, Morgan what if it backfires or something? We are dealing with things that are beyond our power. We can't just change the way everyone has been punished by overusing the power from day to night, or just because a book said it's possible."
"Shut it. It's going to work, and it's going to take care of those idiots." she said with a tone of finality making you shut up and look down at your covers. Why wast your time telling her how bad of an idea this was when she wasn't going to listen to you? Might as well just follow her, and if things start to go sour you'll just have to see the best way to save yourself.
Chase' eyes don't leave your mind, haunting you with their beauty for a few more hours until finally exhaustion takes you in its embrace and you manage to fall in a restless sleep. He manages to make an appearance in your dream, but once you wake up you can barely remember what was said between the two of you.
In the afternoon at Nicky's, Caleb and Pogue approach all of you, startling you when Pogue slams his hands on your table to grab you girl's attention. "Which one of you witches sent it?" Caleb asks with a snarl.
"Sent what Danvers?" Morgan asks without much interest, while she keeps her eyes cast on her phone.
"You know damned well what!" he says taking the phone from her hands to have her full attention.
"Hey! Give it back!"
"Then answer the question, which one of you sent the darkling?"
"What? You saw a darkling?" she asks, sitting straight on her chair and looking now at him, with her full attention.
"Don't play coy, we know one of you did it."
"We didn't do it!" she said, looking at each of us in the eye, to make sure we really hadn't, until we all nodded. "See? You're barking at the wrong three, why don't you turn yourself to your friends before you accuse us of anything ever again?" they look at you for a while longer until they just leave to go to the table where Sarah and Kate were sitting with, you notice delightfully, Chase.
He looks your way once Caleb and Pogue get to the table, catches you looking at him and grins at you, raising his glass your way before turning back to the conversation when Kate directs it at him. Damn, he does look good, you get distracted looking back at him again when he takes off his plaid shirt.
"..../N)? (Y/N)?" you finally take notice of your name being called. "You coming?" you nod and stand following them halfway across the bar before music starts to fill your ears and a hand on your shoulder stops you. You turn around to see Chase with a smile and an outstretched hand.
"Care do dance?" he asks with a charming smile and a small wink your way. You look back at your group, Morgan humphs and turns to leave unbothered if you stayed or not.
"We'll be outside, don't take long or we'll leave without you." she simply throws back at you. Turning back at him he pulls you more to his body, hands on your hips willy you two dance to the music blasting trough the speakers.
"The name's Chase, and yours beautiful?" you giggle at his forwardness.
"(Y/N):"
"Is it normal?"
"What is?" you frown a bit, and after he twirls you a bit he answers.
"For your friend to have a stick up her ass?" you give a heartfelt laugh, hiding your head the next second on his neck and looking around the two of you. "Don't let her catch you saying that, she'll kill you and turn to me next for having even dared to laugh."
"If it gets this cute reaction out of you then I can face her just fine." he grins until a crash his heard coming from the pool table. Pogue and Caleb soon joining Reid and Tyler outside. Letting go of him, even against your will, and smiling up at him you turn to leave.
"I have to go, they're my ride." he pulls you again to him, kisses your cheek and legs you go.
"See you around." Reaching outside you find them still waiting, you open the back door and get in. You can hear him asking the guys if they wanted help dealing with the situation, being turned out afterward.
"Done flirting?" Morgan throws out bitterly, we have more important things to do, like devise a plan to accomplish our goal." you lower your head, ashamed of being called out, but you didn't regretted it one bit. Chase was a charmer and even though that might spell disaster and a possible heartbreak for you, you are willing to try and see where this all leads to.
You all hear a loud crash, like glass breaking, before Morgan speeds up back to campus. You say goodnight to them as soon as you are inside, thunder cracking in the distance, you go to your room, pick up a towel and your nightgown and head towards the showers.
They are empty, so you pick the first shower stall on the bathroom, take off your clothes and turn on the water. Its warmness sipping into your bones to muscles, relaxing you totally. You are rinsing the shampoo out when a shiver runs pass you, making all your hairs rise, and goosebumps to appear on your skin, despite the hot water hitting it. You look around you, fog around you, making it hard to see much.
"Hello?" you call out. The only thing you hear is the water running. Weird. but even after you have finished your bath the sinking feeling of being watched remains. You leave the bathroom slowly, almost like a scared cat, the thunders illuminating the hallways while the rain pelted down on the windows, making it hard to hear your own footsteps.
Slightly on hedge, you run to your room, closing the door behind you and leaning your forehead on it. The clicking of the light and Morgan's voices scares you, making your heart race, your hand coming up to your chest, breathing ragged.
"What are you doing?"
"Nothing. Sorry to wake you, you can go back to sleep." she huffs at your answer, turns the light off again and turns around in bed, facing away from you. With your heart still racing you head to bed, the cool covers absorbing the sweat that seems to be covering your skin.
'Damn, I just showered.' you thought. Sleep evades you for the good part of the night, only managing to fall asleep around 2 am once the feeling of being watched slipped away and you were able to relax.
During classes the time passed by slowly, dragging itself despite being your favorite classes. Not even Reid's attempt at a joke made you laugh today. Caleb and Pogue kept sending looks at all of you, their faces scrunching up on disgust most times. What did they want now? Morgan made a comment to which you barely paid attention to. Once class was dismissed Pogue comes on to you and looked at Morgan in the eyes.
"We might have believed you the first time but not now, I also saw the darkling last night, and if I find out one of you witches sent it you are going to regret it." he walked away without even waiting for an answer from you.
"Urgent meeting. Now!" Morgan calls out, walking away to a small alcove outside of the school surrounded by some bushes and trees, some stone benches beneath them. Leaves cover them, spattering the ground with orange and red tones. "Ok now, tell me the truth. Which one of you did it?" when there was no answer she stomped her foot down and almost yelled, anger barely contained on her words. "Which one of you sent the darkling?!"
"Morgan I don't think any of us did it." you pipe in, voice low, to appease her anger. Or at least try to. Her eyes trailed on to you next.
"Then if we didn't who did? Because it sure does have to have been someone!"
"Maybe Reid did it, he's always the one playing pranks on everyone." Gwen suggested.
"But wouldn't they have confronted Reid already?" Edith says looking at her sister.
"They wouldn't be accusing us if they had. They clearly just want to make us the culprits of everything and Reid is probably taking advantage of that." Vera says next.
"I don't care what they think, someone is using their powers and that's giving us trouble. I intend to find out who." Morgan said with finality walking back inside, you all following her.
"I'm going to go to the library, girls, excuse me." you tell them before climbing the stairs to the library, while they walked back to the dorms. you found an empty table in the first floor, right at the back, with a view to the open area of the lower floor, and start taking off your book and laying them out in front of you, ready to work on some small assignments the teacher asked to be delivered next week. You are somewhat focused on your work, being almost done until you hear someone talking about the boys. You look around you, Sarah and Kate's voice drifting up to you from downstairs, you look at them, work forgotten, and focus on their talk.
"Did you know that the witchcraft actually started her in Ipswich?" you hear Sarah ask.
"Every time he's talked about it, he just tells me its all nonsense." Kate answers, probably talking about her boyfriend Pogue.
They don't talk too much about it after that, but that small interaction got your interest up. Why was Sarah curious about our ancestor's history? Did Caleb tell her anything? Did she suspect them? You text the girls to let them know to be wary of Sarah and head to the school grounds, the cold air hitting you as soon as you opened the doors.
You fish up your headphones from your bag and put on some music, getting distracted from the world around you. A text from Morgan makes you pause to read it, 'Don't worry with the girl, as long as she keeps Caleb entertain she's of no concern to us.', Morgan still hadn't told you of what her plan was, but if she wasn't concerned about Sarah then you wouldn't either. It's starting to get dark, and some thunder can be heard from the distance once you focused back on the world again. Looks like you staid daydreaming too long this time and completely lost track of time on your wanderings.
Going back to the dorms you hear loud voices coming from Kate's room, it's not like you are eavesdropping, they are talking rather loudly, so you just start to walk a bit slower.
".... ridiculous. What is your problem?
"Chase is my problem." Now that get your attention.
"What are you jealous?"
"I just don't want you hanging around with him." you hear Pogue say.
"Look, he's just a friend."
"Yeah right. I'm sure he's interested in just being friends." you hear a door open and jump up a bit, Pogue coming out of the room with Kate still talking with him. "What are you looking at?" he directs at you while walking away.
You continue walking to your dorm when you hear someone calling you name down the hallway.
"Hey, (Y/N)." Chase, you smile up at him.
"Hey, Chase. Where are you going?"
"I was actually looking for you. "
"Really? What for?"
"I wanted to invite you to the swimming practice tomorrow."
"Oh really? Well, in that case, I'll be there." He smiles up at you, eyes shining with excitement.
"Great, then I'll see you there." you nod at him, he goes to walk away but stops as if he had forgotten something and goes back to you. He leans forward and plants a small kiss on your lips. Both your smiles widen, he looks up at your eyes and he kisses you again before leaving. You raise your hand to your lips, savoring the sweet moment.
You go to bad thinking about Chase that night, and all the things you wanted him to do to you, you should probably be ashamed of the turn your though took, but they were just that, thoughts, so what harm could they do if you just indulged a little bit longer?
In the morning, on the swimming pool, you were watching the boys practice, cheering them on until you saw Chase and Caleb approaching the diving board alone. Where they going to compete on their own? Nice.
"C'mon Chase, I know you can win." you cheered him, he looked over at you and winked, his smirk still in place. Once they both jumped in the water your heart started beating faster, waiting to see which one of them would finish first the two laps. They were a flurry of limbs, water gliding pass them on their torpedo-like speed. They were both tied until the very ending, were Chase seam to have gotten a boost and finished first, Chase, however, hit his head on the pool, all traces of gleeful happiness gone with worry for him.
He was quickly pulled out of the water, his worried friends in a circle around him to make sure he was ok, Chase was with them, after all, he had been the one to take him out of the pool. Once he was awake and responsive again they helped him up and to the changing rooms, Chase approaching you.
"Hey (Y/N), I'm glad you came."
"Hi Chase, it was fun watching you guys swim, pity what happened with Caleb though, I hope he'll be fine."
"I thought you girls didn't like Caleb and his group." he says, smile dropping for a fraction of a second.
"They can't stand them really, me? I would just prefer I had the choice of staying on the sidelines and avoid their open war against each other."
"What the fight about? Did someone broke someone's heart?" he was joking a bit you could tell that much, his smile showing, making some dimples to appear.
"Oh, it nothing really, they are just taking our families rivalry to a new level of idiocy over something that happened over 300 years ago, and that they can't just get over with." you let out without much thought.
"Family feuds?" Shit... even if no one really believed in witches and that your families really descended from them, you should still be careful about what you say to strangers. How did you get so careless?
"Stupid things, I can't really be sure about it since it happened so long ago." he nods, and looks a bit behind him to the changing rooms.
"Well, I should probably go get dressed for classes. See you around?" you hum, nodding your head and he reaches forward planting a kiss on your cheek.

Communes & Land Projects: A Nomadic Critique of Communization
The establishment of intentional communities of all kinds is a popular fad yet again. Perhaps we have reached a point where economic pressures and the failure of government have heightened the desirability of such living arrangements. Leviathan has spread its slimy tentacles across every corner of the globe, and the jungles of concrete — the urban sprawl — have reached nearly everywhere. In the United States, the furthest distance to complete isolation from any road or structure is only 18 miles from one point to another. Where I am currently, this number falls to 6 miles. It gets as low as 2 miles or less in some US States. This shows how the urban setting is now essentially inescapable. There is a total of 2.43 billion acres of land in the United States, and its overseas territories. 17.5% of this land is Alaska. Out of these 2.5 billion acres of land, only 4.5% of it is wilderness today. The State of Alaska comprises 52% of the wilderness in the US. The State of New York, an exception in terms of population, but completely median in terms of geographical land mass, has less than 1%. It is the same for my home State. As a matter of fact, every State in the US besides Alaska and California (14%) have 4% or less. 31 States, including Hawaii, plus Puerto Rico, have less than 1% of the US wilderness area. Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, and Rhode Island don't have any wilderness areas at all. In lieu of this lossage, the very human, yet also wild desire to “get away from it all’ and return to the land and nature is perfectly understandable. Our personal connections to pristine nature are as tenuous as ever. Hundreds of millions of people have never spent a single night camping outdoors. It’s difficult, if not impossible, to escape the ever-present noise and high-pitched buzzing of the AC units, Internet routers, giant flat-screen TVs, PC fans, etc. We are inundated with overwhelming, panic-inducing amounts of ads and information. On top of all this, most feel forced to engage in wage-slavery, for some boss. These realities and countless others paint an increasingly bleak picture of what civilization has to offer to the individual, or any of us, today.
The old idea was that we need to confront the bourgeoisie and the State head-on through class warfare via popular revolution. After centuries of failures, this outlook has been exchanged for one that says we can and must start doing communism now. This is often justified by obscure Easter eggs offered up from the writings of Karl Marx. Anarchy, class warfare, communization, and revolution are all seen by communisateurs as synonymous concepts. The Tiqqunistic text Call by an anonymous author describes “the process of instituting communism” as “only tak[ing] the form” of “acts of communization” [original emphasis], such as “making common such-and-such space” (2009, 22). The text also describes “this constellation of occupied spaces where, despite many limits, it is possible to experiment with forms of collective assembly outside of control, we have known an increase in power.” (2009, 17)
This optimistic talk of occupying spaces, becoming free of control, the talk of increasing power, of acceleration, is surely bothersome especially coming from neo-Marxoids like the communisateurs, but similar suggestions have also been made by anarchists, including Peter Lamborn Wilson (aka Hakim Bey). Similar claims about communes are made in T.A.Z.: The Temporary Autonomous Zone, Ontological Anarchy, Poetic Terrorism, first published in 1991. Much of the ideas of the communisateurs seem informed by, if not lifted from, these older writings of Wilson. And much like the communisateurs have asked us today (more than a quarter century later), Wilson also queried us the same way back in 1991:
“Are we who live in the present doomed never to experience autonomy, never to stand for one moment on a bit of land ruled only by freedom? Are we reduced either to nostalgia for the past or nostalgia for the future? Must we wait until the entire world is freed of political control before even one of us can claim to know freedom?
...a certain kind of 'free enclave' is not only possible in our time but also existent"...(38)
"What of the anarchist dream, the Stateless state, the Commune, the autonomous zone with duration, a free society, a free culture? Are we to abandon that hope in return for some existentialist acte gratuit? The point is not to change consciousness but to change the world.” (39)
Wilson, like the communisateurs, sees this as “the seed of the new society taking shape within the shell of the old” (41):
“I do suggest that the TAZ is the only possible ‘time’ and ‘place’...for the sheer pleasure of creative play, and as an actual contribution to the forces which allow the TAZ to cohere and manifest.” ... “A world in which the TAZ succeeded in putting down roots might resemble the world envisioned by ‘P.M.’ in his fantasy novel bolo'bolo. Perhaps the TAZ is a ‘proto-bolo.’” (52)
Both anarchists of Wilsons ilk, and the communisateurs of today, seem unfocused or uninterested in what many across the communist left (specifically its more traditional groups) have deemed “defensive struggles”, which is a term meant to refer to the increasingly extreme austerity measures imposed on the general populous by the ruling class (attacks made by the bourgeoisie). When I talk about defense, I usually mean the defense of nature rather than the economy. We have seen these attacks come in the form of tax hikes against everyday working families, instead of tax hikes for corporations and the wealthy captains of industry. Another example of these attacks by the bourgeoisie was the use of public revenue in the US to shore up companies and ensure the economic bailout of corporations following the 2008 US stock market crash. But Wilson differs from Marxist class warfare advocates in that he advocates camouflage and social concealment; “a tactic of disappearance” (1991, 50). Wilson believes the commune should blend in to its surroundings as best it can, hide, and not be outwardly confrontational, or stir up trouble with the neighbors. It’s more anarchist in this regard, but even with statements like “TAZ is a nomad camp” (43), the bolo’boloism of T. A. Z. and Wilson doesn’t quite cross into true nomadism, advocating something more similar to hermitry.
The communisateurs differ from Wilson in this regard in that they all want communes as a launchpad for centralized communist attack. Attack is something Wilson rarely mentions, if at all, which is a shame because I like attack as much as the next person! But what is unappetizing about the call for attack by the communisateurs and Tiqqunists is exactly that they are communisateurs — they are Marxists — they want the communes so they can have spaces to build their Party, or build whatever of their organizations, to opportunistically centralize and “increase power” (anonymous 2009, 17). This is in preparation of them launching their inevitable revolutionary war against the bourgeoisie, and following their victory, the communizers would of course seek to institute the dictatorship of the proletariat (also referred to in some circles of the Marxist far-left as the proletarian semi-State).
I am not against the breaking of legs in general, in the typical sense of moral opposition to a particular action, or beyond having my legs broken. And I’m not above, against, or beyond party-crashing tactics, either. I am an individualist, and in the sense of applying force, of many kinds, an occasional nihilist. But I would never use violence with the aim of controlling others. My attack is direct, purposeful. Violence must only be applied when and where it has to be, to the appropriate degree it has to be, without enjoyment, or with the goal of controlling others in mind. Saying this is not to ignore all the reasons violence does happen. But attack to destroy, because you must. I would use violence in self-defense, and perhaps even out of self-interest, but I differ from the communisateurs in that when I apply violence, my intentions and actions are meant to be centrifugal. They are directed away from a given pole of focus or concern. That is why Bolshevik coups are of no concern to me. Neither is direct action that aims to coerce people into dictatorships, the Party, or the Parties way of thinking. This kind of homogeneity is a hallmark of the State, Civilization, and Capital. I am not at all interested in being involved in any kind of community, network, or worknet that aims to progress in a quantitative way, to grow in numbers, or one that maintains a membership. My associations with others are never aiming to be coercive. I wear my intentions on my sleeve. Whether there are two or two-hundred people doing what I am doing and communicating with me about it, makes no difference. Although, groups bigger than three-hundred are increasingly Leviathanic. I suppose this also includes domestic living communities and villages. I prefer small groups. Under ten is perhaps best for me, and we all differ, but the point is small groupings of any size within natural limits encourage heterogeneity naturally. This is another difference between the views of Wilson and the views of the communisateurs. Wilson, displaying at least some awareness of the concept of nomadology, understands the need for not just escape, but dispersal, and generally describes his writing project as being against history, progress, and the narratives they bring with them. Wilsons T. A. Z. may be utopian, but it isn’t even in the same realm as the communization texts in terms of millenarianism.
My issue with attempting to permanently occupy spaces through any means whatsoever is that land occupation does nothing but encourage and even solicit domination over nature, domination over the other animals we share space with, domination over each other, and so on. I don’t have any interest in controlling things or others. In fact, I should not even separate myself from these things I’ve just mentioned in the ontological sense. The word land itself implies domination: I landed a job, I landed a date, I landed the top prize. To land, to be landed, to have stopped being in flux, is not dissimilar to having occupied a thing, and is often the same. This is, according to James C. Scott, the primary goal of the State: to fix populations to specific geographic boundaries. We might say in English, “I have this land. This land is mine.” Which is to say, because you stand there on it, apparently dominating over it, it is yours. I am here, so now this is mine. That’s what it means to land, to have it, to be landed. It’s like Manifest Destiny for everyone, an ideology not restricted only to whites and Christians. I am not part of this community, it is mine altogether! It belongs to me. In fact, God created it like this, just for me!
As you are hopefully beginning to see, or already seeing, we can not lay claims over spaces without first attempting to ontologically separate ourselves from nature, an impossible task. We are nature. Everything that exists, and even things beyond our awareness and perception, are also part of nature. It pains me to say it, but even technology is technically part of the natural world. I refer to this as pluralistic naturalistic holism. For billions of years before our arrival, the planet Earth was already one big commune. For the fishes, for the lizards, for the flowers, for the bees and ants — I think we have just forgotten our place in it.

BakuBabes fighting system changes
Or else: Idea-package to change/fix the brawling in Bakugan: New Vestroia
Tumblr media
Last time I ranted a bit about my overall problems with the brawling in the latter seasons, including the second season.
This time, let's see, what we could do to make the brawling feel less like 'rock-paper-scissors' and more like 'chess'.
(Massive break-down under the cut, Wall-Of-Text warning)
There are going to be new gameplay components brought in, some original ones varied or changed, and some dismissed. All of these changes are brought up with this in mind: adding extra depth to the game, giving a better space for tactics and strategy. Even with these changes, I attempt to keep the system canon-compliant, both visually and gameplay-wise. (For example sticking with one gate card per round, talking about this later)
I attempted to give a lot of examples for better comprehension.
Now, let me go through a a point-by-pont list and check the problems and solutions while doing it:
1. Imagine it like a MOBA - Team-based arena fighting
Tumblr media
Although I personally liked the first season's brawling system and card-strategy game charactetistics, I support the idea of 'spicing up' the strictly tabletop game depiction and heading a more free-style, team-based gaming mechanics.
Tumblr media
The closest moment to have something team fight-y was in S2 Ep27, where the Ancient Warriors of Vestroia gathered into a party to fight Farbros and Zenoheld. (It was basically a party-boss match.)
Sticking with traditional duelling in the show was justified on the basis of ‘fighting for honor’, but in times, it forced out situations from the plot, where - spite the Resistance being aware of the power of unity - a few people had to be left alone for one-one duels to work ‘plot-logically’ and run simultaneously. Well, here let’s interpret, that scattering to ‘keep the enemy busy’ is not needed and everyone is burning from the passion to free and fight for the Bakugan as much as Dan does. So they just jump into the fight without hesitation. (BakuBabes comic ; Part 6)
Part of the inspiration for the change came from the Bakugan: Defenders Of The Core console game. B:DOTC - even if it falls into the ‘hack and slash’ genre, not MOBA - is a good material to work with, considering it categorizes the monsters into several subcategories, uses an attribute-counter system and is a generally good reference for the diverse fighting styles and abilities used by the monsters. (For example: Have you known, that Brontes can turn invisible?)
The brawls turn into multiplayer games instead of the traditional few playered duels, and become much more action-reliant. (= Less standing in one place, more ‘real time strategy’ feeling) Along with this come in a bunch of new aspects, which give room for tactical thinking and honing skill:
Positioning
Ability effect and ‘cooldown’ management
Ally-enemy correspondence = hero (in this case Bakugan) synergies and enemy counters
Adaptation to different situations
Adding these extra layers of aspects gives a bigger room for both tactics and skill, and makes the brawler - Bakugan personalities shine.
2. Emphasis on: Teamwork & Synergy
Many times during double - or tripple - duels throughout the second season, there were more than one Bakugan out on the field, but they never actually interacted with one another. The game still got played out as individuals doing their stuff separately next to each other.
As more players join the fight, they form a party and the G Powers are displayed in an aggregated sum. This is important from the perspective of mentality: In a team, individual power matters less and the focus shifts to the teamworking potential and coordination of the members.
Going a more teamfight-based depiction instead individual duels will not only eliminate the problem of the inconsistent match outcomes, but corresponds well with the overall message of the show. (=Being stronger in unison with others)
Although the season takes place in New Vestroia (the monsters are innitially locked in ball form due to the dimensional controllers, but this could come in handy in later seasons), I always imagined, that the brawling up from the second season was about having the physical advantage over the opposition. Being able to summon a house-sized monster out of one's pocket gives a higher ground for individuals in both defending themselves and attacking opponents or buildings. Which means: During a Bakugan brawl the goal is to knock out - or with other words -, force the enemy Bakugan back into ball form. (This is something, which had been present in the whole show, but felt important to mention due to the mechanical Bakugan in a later point.)
So, the point of fighting is to remain in the posession of the physical upper hand and power advantage. In exchange of the physical protection of a giant monster, the human partners are empowered to activate ability cards (Talking about abilities in a later point) and to give shotcalls to their partners. This latter makes sense, for the human partners may be much smaller than the summoned Bakugan, but they are standing further away from the action, having a better overall view on the battlefield. Calling out enemy positioning or ability effects is essential to the Bakugan and their partners' synergy. Coordination is important between not only the brawlers and their partners, but among the party members as well.
Tumblr media
3. Roles
Tumblr media
In order to maximize team-efficiency among the party members, the brawlers have to shift into and fulfill separate roles in correspondence with their Bakugan's capabilities. We will stick with the 3 basic roles commonly used in multiplayer games:
Tank - Support - Damage dealer
I leave a relatively short description of the roles here:
Tank: Tanks mainly protect their teammates by being a ‘living wall’ between allies and enemies. Off-supports the team via 'eating' the incoming damage and physically peeling for allies (either offensively zoning or defensively getting enemies off of teammates, protecting them). Frontliner, usually melee with large healthpool and sustain.
Support: Aids the team through healing / shielding / utility provision. Can be defensive (focusing on protection and sustaining with healing, shielding or buffing allies) or offensive (helping the team getting picks and takedowns via utility means like crowdcontrolling, targetcontrolling, debuffing, ...) Usually squishy target with low healthpool, backliner, caster. (This may vary depending on monsters.)
Damage dealer (DPS): They are the main source of damage, their job is to do as much damage to the enemy as possible. Can be melee or ranged, caster or physical attacker, frontliner or backliner. The two main types of dealable damage are sustain and burst damage.
Examples mentioned in the header:
Tumblr media
Volt & Brontes - Support
Julie & Fly Beetle - Tank
Distributing the power among different roles prevents ‘one-man army overpowerdness’ to happen (Yes, I am looking at Drago...) and incites an actual team effort.
Teamwork becomes essential, as the roles naturally rely on each other to be efficient: The tank peeling for the dps and the support, the support aiding the tank and the dps and the dps doing what they do best: damage to the enemy to end the fight quick (before the tank and support runs out of resources and energy).
Taking a note here, that roles are not as explicitely stated or solid as attributes are.
1. Role classification highly depends on the monsters’ characteristics and ability kit and usually is in a kind of correlation with the brawlers’ personalities and brawling styles.
2. There are monsters, which can ‘flex’ into other roles with limitations (e.g. bruisers, assissting dps,...).
3. The role system doesn’t mean, that Bakugan can’t have abilities from other role aspects. Roles rather show the main specialization of the Bakugan. ( For example: Drago is an offensive damage dealer, but he can keep the defensive Fire Shield ability, in a form of an activable ability card.)
4. Abilities, ability cards
There is a thing I forgot to mention on the account of ability spamming in the show: Although every ability was usable only once per round, this rule didn’t have any impact on the overall game, because starting a new round automatically unlocked every ability again to spam. This is why the game just felt so stacked with abilities and why they could use the same cards over and over again within a short period. So the goal here is to reduce the back and forth snowballing with abilities and enable different counterplays along with making them impactful enough to balance out the fewer usage.
To prevent abilities from getting spammed:
1. We have to shift power into the basic ability kit of the monsters. This means: Not every ability require ability cards to be usable. For example: Basic projectile shooting for ranged monsters (Drago spitting fire) or other abilities for other classes (Nemus shielding allies).
Tumblr media
2. Abilities - to also have a better dynamic with the overall game - are going to have ‘cooldowns’. (Just like Nemus’s fusion ability ‘Flow Skylight’ in S2 Ep4 without the extra conditions.) The cooldown durations may vary depending on the impact of the effect. For example: Abilities affecting the whole party are on longer cooldown periods than one-target spells.
Adding to the impactfulness: Abilities might also have different ‘status modificator’ effects, such as root, stun, poisoning / damage-over-time, etc.
In this system, activating an ability should rather feel like popping an empowered spell, or a longer ‘cd’ in a game. But they are not always straight forward to use or affects enemies strictly: e.g. supports healing their teammates.
5. Gate cards
As abilities are meant to directly affect the monsters themselves, gate cards have effects on either the battleground itself (reactor cards) or on the rules of the battle (command cards). / Character cards are not brought back from S1 under the mentality of team-based games. /
The reason we’ll keep with one gate card per round is to have canon-gameplay consistency.
/There could be something with bringing back more gate cards and them being physical territorial indicators of power dominance on the field, adding an extra importance to positioning but for the sake of canon-compliance I let this go for now.../
Gate cards have the potential to change the overall tide of the battle. Therefore having the gate card down from your own team may have advantage. But important: The given advantage is not guaranteed! In themselves, gate card effects - instead of automatically affecting allies beneficial or enemies harmful - are mostly neutral from the 'game’s perspective’. Gate cards have risk to fire back upon faulty or ill-considered use. Making them less streamlined gives another tool for players to think in advance and set up a higher ground for themselves via planning.
5. Attributes
Tumblr media
Attributes didn’t really play any role in the season, majorly due to abilities overshadowing everything. Here attributes have a kind of minor ‘statistic modificator’ influence.
To have a better overview on this, here is an already existing listing from the Bakugan Dimensions game (back from 2010):
“Pyrus – The Aggressive attribute of Fire. Pyrus Brawlers use fast attacks and attacks that ignore defense. Pyrus Bakugan also increase their fighting power throughout a battle. Subterra – The powerful attribute of Earth. Subterra Brawlers use slow, but devastating, attacks at close range. Their strong, earthen durability gives them high defense. Haos – The wise attribute of Light. Haos Brawlers know the importance of a strong defense. They lure their opponents in and strike hardest when they seem the weakest. Darkus – The hidden attribute of Darkness. Darkus brawlers use Gates to exhaust their enemy while building their own power base. Aquos – The flexible attribute of Water. Aquos brawlers shape both themselves and the environment to suit the needs of the battle. Ventus – The quick attribute of Air. Ventus brawlers are always on the move. They use their incredible speed and mobility to both avoid their enemies and attack faster. “
(Sadly, I never had the opportunity to play the game myself.)
According to this and adding some new ideas, here are the main aspects and added benefits of the attributes:
Pyrus - Strong on offense, great fire-power (better offensive capabilities)
Subterra - Enduring, extra-sustain (better defense, ‘larger Healtpool’)
Haos - Caster-based, extra power on magical spells (both offensive and defensive)
Darkus - Tricky, power in unpredictability (twisty abilities)
Aquos - Flexible, easier adaptation (flexible kit, see: attribute changing)
Ventus - Evasive, great agility (faster movement, better dodging)
1. Attributes add basic characteristics to the Bakugan, but don’t necessarily determine their roles. (The only likeliness is Subterra Bakugan usually being tanks and Haos ones supports, but these come from the extra features those attributes give them. Otherwise any role can be played by any attribute. Attributes are like ‘racial passives’.)
2. The reason the attribute-counter system is not entirely making it to the Au’s brawling structure is because the roles already give a twist to it and the game is balanced around the capabilities of the team itself. Making one attribute more powerful against another from a standby would render a lot of things (like the monsters or the entire deck of players) situational or niche to play.
/Players can change monsters between rounds, but they insist on their played attributes. As in most of the second season, brawlers mostly play with only one Bakugan, or at least not likely to switch. (Theoritically they could, Mira even gave Dan extra monsters for Drago to ‘have back-up’. Plot-wise we can justify this with ‘they already built out trust with their partner monsters so they don’t need to switch’.) Switching monsters between rounds is possible to adapt to the ally / enemy line-up, but since players play only one attribute, this wouldn’t help with fair matching./
6. Things dismissed: G power numerical values and Traps
1. The reasons of declined G power number usage are:
a. It would be way too complicated to calculate with and follow every single modificator’s effect on every single monster. (Especially as the headcount grows.)
b. Perspective-wise, individual G power levels don’t make a difference as long as we talk about teams as units. Not only in gameplay, but according to the group-mentality, individual power level matters less and has a lesser impact, than a good team-coordination.
c. The game itself revolves around the actions and their real-time effects, not the numbers. (G powers originally meant to be indicators of power difference. The accurate power level or difference weren’t actually interesting, only the state of being the upper or the lower out of the two.)
2. Traps are left out of the picture for now, because the main focus is on the Bakugan themselves and their interaction on the battlefield. Extra summoned units could jumble things a bit (both with the roles and the abilities) and they also make up for an even bigger crowd on the field, making it harder to keep track of everything again.
7. Mechanical monsters
Tumblr media
One of the biggest deal of the second season’s plot was to bring in mechanical Bakugan into the picture. But due to the streamlined gameplay, these were not more than envisualisation of flashy overpowerdness.
This time, mechanical monsters will actually have benefits and downsides gameplay-wise.
Cybernetic monsters are immune to some effects (such as poisoning) and are generally well-equiped with an arsenal of weapons. Due artificial tuning and upgrading, they have a strong kit and their statistics are artificially set high. This makes them hard to beat and they impose an actual threat to the normal Bakugan. (They are like the Terminators of Vestroia.)
On the other hand, what cybernetic Bakugan lack is self-sufficient willpower and consciousness, thus for most part they are reliant on input and given orders by the players. For they also lack conscience and a ‘living soul’, they have no sense of fear or exhaustion. This can lead to an exaggeration on the half of the brawlers. If they are not careful enough, forcing a mechanical Bakugan back into ball form may burn them out a bit (as we have seen with Altair or Hades), pushing the monsters to their limits may even get them annihilated or entirely destroyed. (This is something, which normally doesn’t happen to a living Bakugan. It’s very rare for Bakugan to ‘die’ during brawls, because their automatic ‘fear-response’ turns on if they have a near-death experience. Both this, hitting them hard enough to retreat or falling unconscious renders the monsters back into ball form.)
8. One on one duels
The only visible downside of this system is making 1v1 brawls work. Due to the introduction of roles, the monsters are no longer balanced around their damage dealing capabilities and not all of them starts and stands with equal chances in a duel. And falling back to one monster per game per player brings back most of the problems we tried to give a resolution to previously.
/The only possibility I see is having the three Bakugan per player mechanic from S1 back and making all of them active on the field, ‘controlled’ by one player. But this would complicate things, so for now, we don’t talk about this./
But this doesn’t mean 1v1 games are impossible or against the rules. (They just don’t play out as smoothly as team fights do.)
9. For the end: About this post
I’m sure, there are things I left out, this ‘guide’ can never be complete entirely. For example: I haven’ talked about whether life gauges are going to be aggregated or (probably) not, or what’s up with universally activable abilitiy cards. This is because there are stuff I’m still thinking on or not sure about. Not every piece here is in their place yet, we’ll see, what the future brings. Until that, this is the best foundation I can work with regarding the brawling.
(Wow, this thing became ultra-detailed, I’m not even sure if the comic itself can stay true to everything I lay down here, but I’ll try...
I had to write a post about this to show: The brawling can be made interesting again, it just needs a shake-up and some game mechanic thoughts put behind it.)
