Seeing so many people railing against the netflix show Dahmer because it hurts victims and exploits their suffering got me thinking some kind of way about the way America in general portrays themselves on movies, more those that either want to attribute to America especial kind of values that apparently no one else has (”freedom”) or directly reference war or militaristic actions as somehow good. This is an idea I have been cooking for a while when I saw a review, that otherwise was fine, in which the youtuber said that the Iron Giant is “anti-military” and I was so patently confused because no, it’s not. The military is literally portrayed as the good guys who did the right thing and reacted to a credible threat, rejecting the actual bad guy of the movie because they are too good to ever even think about hurting a white american child. The Iron Giant himself is a weapon of mass destruction that has the capacity of killing everyone but chooses not to because Superman, a symbol of American Exceptionalism if I ever saw one, inspires him to heroically take on a dangerous mission for the sake of saving everyone and if that isn’t metaphorically bringing to mind the way that the USA is the owner of some of the most destructive weapons in the entire Earth, but it’s fine because they are the USA and they are the good guys, then I don’t know what to tell you because it sure looks like that to me. And, like, that got me thinking... there are people out there to whom that can be traumatizing. There are people who have died on wars, or almost did, because of america exceptionalism, because of their “freedom”, because they tried to get an american taste and end up dying on a cage without knowing what happened to their children. Colonialism has a body count, slavery has a body counts, America and the military  have body counts, and those can cause traumas that will probably remain on some cases with an entire family, entire communities. If you all felt something about the generational trauma on Encanto, but still argued more about Latine characters never being queer or neurodivergent, then just try to imagine for one second how it feels for the people to whom America meant pain and suffering to constantly being gaslighted into believing that they are a force of good, sometimes the only force of good that keeps the rest of the world safe from certain evil and that evil happened to be your home. Why is that trauma not talked about more? Why is that pain the one that has us stopping for a moment and consider “wait, is this right? Is this truthful? Is this something worth repreating even though we are literally rewriting history and putting on a bright smile over the dead bodies of these people”? I don’t even want to say those narrative shouldn’t exist, I mean that kinda of discussion is just never there on the first place when it comes to certain kind of victims. Why we treat “true crime” as this precious thing that has to be handled carefully because “the family of the victims could be listening” but there is never that type of care about history, especially that one that happened to affect to the “losers” of it? Pain is pain and unnecesary suffering is bad, so why it’s okay on one context in which it happened to one person or a group of person by the actions of one or more individuals but not when it’s an entire country on an entire demographic?  Rationally I know why. Because that is the foundation of American Exceptionalism and to believe that they could be the bad guys for someone else, someone that is just as valuable and good as they believe themselves to be, is asking to tear down the entire fabric of what being american even means. Not to mention that it’s hard to see an statistic about the many fucks up of the CIA on Latinoamérica and realize that there were people behind those numbers, sons and daughters and everything else, a victim that didn’t deserve shit. I get that, but at the same time it kinda underwhelming when I see leftist going all out about how this or that show shouldn’t exist or it’s especially bad because it had this effect on the victims, which are valid feelings to have, don’t get me wrong, but there is still a clear distinction between who even brings those ethical questions and who doesn’t. Anyway, I don’t mean to invalidate anyone affected for the crimes of a person or the people who care about them because pain is pain and unnecesary suffering is bad, but the whole talk about how ethical or unethical true crime content can or has to be got me thinking about this. Also Iron Giant sucks. There, I said it.

Danny blinked at the small children Ellie was holding the hand of, looking quite proud of herself. The small children- between ten and twelve so somewhere similar to Ellie’s age- who both practically stank of magic and Gods.

It is my sincerest and unironic belief that we must invest in preserving "old technology." The more we move to a hegemonic, easily-surveilled way of living, the worse we will find this world to be.
Letters, public phones and transport, cash, and so much more are key to ensuring both freedom of movement and information, but also to combat the surveillance state. We need to preserve the ability to both access the world but also to be untraceable. I truly hope more people start to recognize this. It isn't about nostalgia for the past. It is about ensuring that we are actually afforded freedom, from the richest person to the person who lives on the sidewalk.

rereading some of my favorite classic fan fics and again just so struck by the fact that mainstream fiction could never give me what you people give me every day for FREE. you're all the exact level of poetic and deranged that i'm endlessly searching for. no one is doing it like fic writers.

I'm listening to a lot of Maintenance Phase (bc I love it) and this comes up sometimes, so I'll just be sat here thinking about how common it is for little kids to grow up watching their moms and other women in their life jump from diet to diet. Just as ambient background noise in your childhood, the adults around you obsess over calories aloud, express guilt over eating enjoyable food, frame exercise as a form of punishment for eating, and so on.

Some Business Bozo puts a hit out on Vlad. It's one of Vlad's earliest victims, back before he knew how to properly cover his tracks but there were so few metas no one knew exactly what the hell happened. BB had his entire fortune and company stolen and has spent the rest of his life building up enough fortune to hire the best assassin to murder this bastard.
Enter Slade Wilson.
Slade has recently accepted the job to kill Vlad Masters. During preliminary research, Slade discovers Daniel Masters, formerly Fenton, the godchild Vlad adopted after his family died in an accident. The godchild who despises Masters for murdering his friends and family. The godchild who is willing to sell Masters out in a heartbeat if it means being free.
The Terminator and the Ghost Boy strike a deal. Slade even grows fond of the little maniac.

I don’t get akeshu / shuake at all.
Like I get it from a typical “fandom loves the enemies to lovers trope” perspective but in all honesty I don’t get the insane brainrot the persona 5 fandom has for this ship.
Like do I think Joker cares for Akechi? Yes.
Do I think he was genuinely conflicted/tempted by Maruki’s ultimatum? Yes.
Do I think they have a genuine relationship and see a lot of themselves in each other and actually somewhat understand each other? Yes.
That being said, I really don’t see how anyone can look past the fact that Akechi tried to kill Joker. And okie fine enemies to lovers, fandom’s favorite ship aside, I don’t see how Joker can actually want a full on relationship (like romantic) with this dude when Futaba, Sojiro, and Haru are like right there?
This may just be me but I reallllllllly wouldn’t be friends with someone who is friends (hell forget even in a romantic relationship) with someone who horribly hurt me.
And I don’t think Joker loves Akechi more than Futaba, Sojiro, or Haru. Especially Sojiro and Futaba. Those two are like his family, and Akechi is responsible for their suffering.
Like… it’s kind of one or the other. Joker can’t be friends/dating Akechi without horribly betraying Futaba, Sojiro, and Haru. That’s just how I see it (but I’m open to hearing other perspectives!)

Prompt 293
Jason takes a deep breath. He takes a deep breath, in for ten seconds, out for eight, and just takes a minute before looking again. Nope, there’s still the strange quartet of orbs in the box of what should be stolen weapons (What, the government had enough, honestly) that gave his workers the heebie-jeebies.
Which is not the vibe he gets from them. In fact, he’s actually kind of concerned with how much he has to beat the Pit back with how quickly it lurches to latch onto the… Well they’re not gems, and he’s a little wary about touching them at first, but the Pit does seem to settle when he does.
Alright, he can deal with this. It’s not like he has several heads in a duffel bag that needs to be delivered or a tiny assassin child back in his safehouse (Seriously Talia, why was he the preferred babysitter?) or an entire gang in Crime Alley to deal with. It’ll be fine.
He would like to curse out his past self, because there’s now four babies in his safehouse that appeared to have fucking hatched from the orbs. Goddamnit.

Shoutout to all the other adults who have acne or any other condition of the skin that you are expected to outgrow or "just deal with."
Adulthood isn't this magical time where everything just disappears, and the reality is that these skin conditions are largely genetic. It isn't your fault (nor your skin's fault) that you are an adult with different skin than other people. In fact, it's neutral (and even, dare I say, good!).

speaking as a fatherless son here i think both telemachus and diomedes got fatherless son behavior but its in different ways. like diomedes is old enough to remember his fathers death he probably wandered his household and fields looking for him because he knew something was missing but telemachus. telemachus always had that missing yknow? there was never a time from his childhood where he remembers his fathers voice or embrace and so its both less noticable and more isolating if that makes sense. diomedes could remember tydeus as a larger-than-life, blurry figure faded in his memory but telemachus had to rely on stories and himself to cobble an imagined man out of scraps. he literally does this in book one. do you think he tried to find odysseus in his face? in himself? and always coming up short?
