Modern AU
Berrigan: You are so funny when you're so concerned about this whole romance stuff
Crowley: Oh yeah?
Berrigan: Well, yes. I've barely been sitting here for two hours and I already know all the details of your relationship with Halt
Berrigan: Which actually scares me a bit...
Crowley:
Crowley: Do you remember when we used to live together in the dorm and you got the first message from Leander, you yelled at the middle of the night, fell out of bed, came to me and woke me up just for me to tell you what to do...?
Berrigan:
Berrigan: That doesn't count. It was a different situation.

This puppy
Not hiding his urgency, the tall young man made his way through the winding streets. Left and right, there were people sitting at the side of the street, some of them drunk in broad daylight, others begging for money, but the man paid them no heed, he had no time for it after all. Horace hated this, to say the very least, but orders were orders and who was he to go against his master. He wished he could just deal with the matter at hand all by himself, but much to his dismay, he was told otherwise. After a few more turns - some of them wrong ones - he reached his destination within the maze-like street network. The inn seemed inconspicuous, fitting right in into the unruly and dirty chaos of the slums, but Horace knew this place held a secret.
'We're closed,' someone annoyed called from behind the counter as soon as Horace had opened the door.
'Even for...' He hesitated in his embarrassment. Why did the password have to be that again? 'Even for the richest cub of the selfish lion?' The slander he spoke against his own master's guild almost made him cringe. Almost.
The man behind the counter finally looked up, raised an eyebrow and gave him a once over. 'Be careful with what you're saying, kid.'
'I'm here to talk business,' he replied coldly. 'With the Hunter.'
The man shrugged. 'Which one?' he asked innocently before grabbing a glass and cleaning it.
Horace paused. There was more than one Hunter?
'C'mon Berrigan, be a bit nicer to my customers,' said a voice right behind Horace. He flinched and turned to the man he hadn't heard coming.
The bartender sighed. 'Youth these days. Doesn't allow you to play with dogs anymore.'
A cold smile formed on the newcomer's lips. He might be equally young and a good bit shorter than Horace, but his eyes glimmered with hunger. Hunger for blood.
'I've nothing against you playing with the watchdogs but this puppy is mine.'

April 2, 2023: The World Keeps Ending, and the World Goes On, Franny Choi
The World Keeps Ending, and the World Goes On Franny Choi Before the apocalypse, there was the apocalypse of boats: boats of prisoners, boats cracking under sky-iron, boats making corpses bloom like algae on the shore. Before the apocalypse, there was the apocalypse of the bombed mosque. There was the apocalypse of the taxi driver warped by flame. There was the apocalypse of the leaving, and the having left— of my mother unsticking herself from her mother’s grave as the plane barreled down the runway. Before the apocalypse, there was the apocalypse of planes. There was the apocalypse of pipelines legislating their way through sacred water, and the apocalypse of the dogs. Before which was the apocalypse of the dogs and the hoses. Before which, the apocalypse of dogs and slave catchers whose faces glowed by lantern-light. Before the apocalypse, the apocalypse of bees. The apocalypse of  buses. Border fence apocalypse. Coat hanger apocalypse. Apocalypse in the textbooks’ selective silences. There was the apocalypse of the settlement and the soda machine; the apocalypse of the settlement and the jars of scalps; there was the bedlam of the cannery; the radioactive rain; the chairless martyr demanding a name. I was born from an apocalypse and have come to tell you what I know—which is that the apocalypse began when Columbus praised God and lowered his anchor. It began when a continent was drawn into cutlets. It began when Kublai Khan told Marco, Begin at the beginning. By the time the apocalypse began, the world had already ended. It ended every day for a century or two. It ended, and another ending world spun in its place. It ended, and we woke up and ordered Greek coffees, drew the hot liquid through our teeth, as everywhere, the apocalypse rumbled, the apocalypse remembered, our dear, beloved apocalypse—it drifted slowly from the trees all around us, so loud we stopped hearing it.

Crowley, lying on the sofa, slowly: And he never understands that I try to pick him up.
Berrigan, sitting next to him, notebook in hand: Have you tried to be more obvious? Or more caring?
Crowley, tired: I've tried everything
Berrigan: Food?
Crowley: Sure, I've cooked for him hundreds of times, I've taken him to the inn for dinner a couple of times, made provisions for the road. I even feed his kids sometimes.
Berrigan: Hmm
Crowley:
Crowley: Ok, it's been a quarter of an hour, move along.
they swap places
Crowley emphatically from above the notebook: And what, dude, you're still acting like it's a school love and just staring at him instead of, I don't know, trying to talk to him?
Berrigan:
Berrigan: I felt attacked, and this was supposed to be a safe space
Crowley, sighs heavily: Never mind, tell me what's new with the song for him. Just please cut out the descriptions of the smile and the eyes because I've had enough, I've really got it, yeah, he's smiling nicely, you can leave that out
Berrigan, a bit offended: Mind to remember that you-
Crowley: Okay, fine, say what you need to say just keep in mind I am the one who needs to be able to look Leander straight in the face in one hour, so...
Berrigan: Straight?
Crowley: YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN GET TO THE POINT

Headcanon that Berrigan’s mentor was the one who taught him to play the gitarra. He inherited his gitarra after his mentor died, and that’s why he cherishes it so much.
He and his mentor also worked out the tune to the Cabin in the Trees, while Berrigan was the one who thought up the lyrics.

April 2, 2024: from Understory, Craig Santos Perez
from Understory Craig Santos Perez
(to my wife, nālani and our 7-month old daughter, kai)
kai cries from teething—
how do new parents
comfort a child in
pain, bullied in school,
shot by a drunk
APEC agent? #justicefor
-kollinelderts— nālani gently
massages kai's gums with
her fingers— how do
we wipe away tear-
gas and blood? provide
shelter from snipers? disarm
occupying armies? #freepalestine—
nālani sings to kai
a song about the
Hawaiian alphabet— what dreams
will echo inside detention
centers and cross teething
borders to soothe the
thousands of children atop
la bestia? #unaccompanied—
nālani rubs kai's back
warm with coconut oil—
how do we hold
violence at arm's length
when raising [our] hands
up is no longer
a universal sign of
surrender? #black livesmatter—
kai finally falls asleep
in nālani's cradling arms,
skin to skin against
the news— when do
we tell our daughter
there's no safe place
for us to breathe #...
