♦  she’s pretty stubborn so getting her to do things is hard but she ends up doing them because it’s you, and she would do anything for even if she complains 70% of the time

though it was way too late to be giggling like you are, you and rory both know lorelai wouldn't really care

not when you'd have a whole batch of baked goods to present as an apology, anyway

it was around eleven pm when rory had the genius suggestion that you two should bake, in order to satiate both of your sweet cravings

how could you say no to a grin as pretty as hers?

the consequences of her idea?

a slightly messy kitchen and even messier hands and flour stained clothes.

rory's hair was pulled back into a loose ponytail, and you moved to push her bangs out of her face now and then

after much discussion, the two of you had settled on cookies, something fairly simple that would be impossible to mess up

whilst rory measured out the ingredients, you settled for passing her each ingredient she'd need

you worked comfortably as a pair, wordlessly following the recipe and taking over different roles

as you worked to mix the ingredients together to form a dough that you could actually work with, rory disappeared into her room, returning with her cd player tucked under her arm

"rory, it's midnight!" "i'll turn it down, i swear!"

you shape the cookies to the soundtrack of one of rory's pj harvey cds, playfully singing to one another as you go

when you took a second to admire her, your heart skipped a beat

the whole scene was so domestic

rory in her pyjamas, her ponytail barely even holding her hair back from her face, baking with flushed cheeks and a content smile

she pulled you out of your trance by attempting to wipe some dough on your cheek

thanks to the consistency, instead of smearing like she had intended, it just fell to the ground as a smattering of crumbs

you laughed at her efforts, protesting with a soft 'hey!' that both of you knew held no malice

when the cookies were in the oven, you took the chance to just enjoy each other's company

talk, dance, press some soft kisses to each other's skin

sleep was beginning to take its hold when the cookies had finally finished cooking.

rory began to move your creations from the baking tray to a large plate, leaving two aside for you to enjoy right away.

still warm cookies in hand, you and rory retreated to the living room sofa, sleepily eating and curling in to each other

lorelai wasn't incredibly pleased with the mountain of washing up she discovered upon waking, but the offering of cookies definitely took her mind off of it.

tldr: jason todd is rory gilmore’s twin brother who was kidnapped by nurse sheila haywood soon after birth. lorelai was consumed by grief, so no one knows about him

(tw: implied infant death (not actually tho))

post red hood arc, jason returned as red hood, fucked up tim, did the duffel bag crime lord thing, then id reveal to the bats & redemption

he’s teamed up with the outlaws as hood a few times, but usually sticks to crime alley and is going to monthly dinners at the manor at this point

jason does a dna test as part of a regular check up (he hasn’t had one since before his death) to get all his information updated and verified in the bat system

finds out that lorelai gilmore is his bio mom

sheila haywood was married to willis todd when jason was born, hence him thinking she was his bio mom

he also finds out about rory in a background check

he pieces together that they're twins

then goes to stay a week at the dragonfly inn during rory’s spring break

he leaves paper trail that duke picks up

jason was last to use the bat computer and duke was checking something before his day shift and found lorelai and rory in the search history

he pieces it together and hides it from the other bats to give jason some space and time like a good bro

eventually duke and cass team and up and follow him when he takes too long for their taste

various asides of dick, tim, damian, and bruce being kinda clueless/writing off jason’s disappearance for an outlaws mission or smth silly and mundane (ex: an austen estate viewing)

eventually, b, dick, and tim catch on and start getting suspicious about jason’s disappearance

so cass and duke stall then dip to follow jason

the rest of the bats follow soon after (maybe a day or two later after duke and cass)

with each snippet of bats being suspicious or silly, we get a snippet of jason meeting and interacting with townspeople

jason and miss patty get along hilariously well and taylor hates jason and vice versa

jason attends a town meeting

jason meets the gilmore grandparents and charms the shit out of them, then casually drops in “when i was a gotham street kid” or something like that near the very end of night

for jason disappearance, im thinking that there were some complications with their birth, so the twins had to be held in the hospital for a day or two. then sheila haywood, one of the nurses, either straight up kidnapped jason and disappeared, or told lorelai that he passed away and then disappears with him.

also, jason and rory bonding over being bookworms, both of them speaking spanish (or jason teaching her spanish beyond a classroom setting), jason inheriting his grandfathers height, the gilmore grandparents being friends with martha and thomas and/or alfred, rory gets introduced to sibling chaos, sister bonding trip, logan shovel talk, kirk and/or luke being suspicious about jason at first, awkward luke and jason bonding moment (cooking together?), jason becomes sookies favorite bc cooking buddies and he respects her kitchen

basically the characters work so so well together, the amount of really well fitting avenues that this hc could go is crazy

ideally, i have the timeline set in gilmore in mid season 5 and have some scenes written, however i’ve not written jason before and can’t get his characterization down right.

@frazzledsoul's poll about the worst possible people Rory could choose to babysit her child inspired a headcanon. I need there to be an episode where the teens of Stars Hollow High/ Chilton are assigned Flour Sack babies for a school assignment. if you're not familiar, it was a common trope in 90's and 2000's sitcoms to have a teacher pair students together for an assigment where they'd care for sack of flour or an egg like a child. Mostly you would just have to carry it around with you at all times during school and not break it, there isn't much else you can do with a bag of flour or an egg child. I think you also had to do some written work to go along with it. I went to a weird alternative school and didn't have anything like this so I don't know everything about it. But it was definitely a real thing that happened in high schools, although these days I think they assign more technically advanced dolls that actually cry and record how long you ignore it's crying and all kinds of other stuff. Someone on the sitcom would invetiably drop the egg or split the sack of flour open leading to hilarious hijinks. Anyway -Paris and Rory would naturally be coupled up to care for their FSB, there would be heated and sexually tense debates over which author to name it after -Paris is already charting FSB's future college plans -Madelyn and Louise decorate their FSB with makeup -Dean would be jealous that Rory was giving her FSB more attention than him. -Dean and Jess would be assigned to parent a FSB together because deep down inside I find the idea of Dean and Jess having to grudgingly tolerate each other at school to be rather amusing. -Look, I'm not gonna Jess-Worship here, Dean and Jess would both neglect the hell out of that thing. I want Dean and Jess to fight over who had to carry it around at school before one of them just abandons it under the bleachers at the football field.

-or, hear me out, Jess and Lane. Lane knows Mrs. Kim would be absolutely scandalized if she got word of this project about REPRODUCTION with a BOY so J&L have to hide it from her and make sure the FSB stays in Lane's locker and meet in secret to write their parenting reports, anyway they end up realizing they have more in common than they thought and like a lot of of the same music, and they grow closer and then make out a lot. Okay, after reading @frazzledsoul Literati band AU, I was tempted to write a proposal for a Literati AU with both Jess and Rory as screenwriters.

So, I wanted to pay homage to different screenwriting couples (Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich, Dan Palladino and Amy Sherman-Palladino, and Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumchuch) and establish Jess as a novelist turned screenwriter and Rory as a passionate screenwriter wanting to have her big break.

They first meet in the 20s, writing a screenplay on Jess's bestselling work and fall in love, but then Jess marries an actress, leaving Rory heartbroken. She starts writing many movies which gain her immense recognition, and she eventually moves to London and reconnects with Logan, eventually marrying him. I wanted to pay homage to couples who marry young but eventually divorce, especially Hollywood couples. The examples are many but, maybe I'll write it in a reblog.

Eventually Jess and Rory reconnect when they're older and are chosen to work on a reboot of The Thin Man, which gains a lot of backlash (like Greta Gerwig when Barbie was first announced) but eventually they attempt to fix their relationship and fall in love again, eventually marrying once the movie is released (which is a hit, like Barbie). This is in homage to many couples who reconnect eventually (like Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez or Danny Kaye and Sylvia Fine).

@stellaluna33​ be careful what you wish for.... Now let’s start off with a far too long list of Eurovision headcanons I have for Gilmore Girls.

While Richard and Emily did technically come across Eurovision (or at least national selection season) in the first half of the 80s (thank you @thatscarletflycatcher​ for that amazing headcanon) Lorelai herself wasn’t introduced to the world’s best singing concert until she met Michel. Michel told Lorelai about that time Celine Dion participated and won for Switzerland, which Lorelai then had to find proof of. Soon enough she catches her first taping of Eurovision (maybe 98 with Dana International) and she’s been obsessed ever since.

Lorelai loves everything at first, but over the years she grows a special kind of love for the truly tacky Eurovision entries. The more glitter and nonsensical english lyrics the better. 

Rory is obviously brought into this in her early teens and bonds with her mom over it. She does love a good tacky entry as well, but what really made Rory come back for the competition every year is all the political gossip and drama that seeps into each year. The voting results announcements is when Rory inches closer to the screen.

It’s not enough for Lorelai to enjoy this by herself with Rory. She shares her opinions with Michel (who hates it), makes a whole themed yearly event of it with Sookie, spreads the gospel of Eurovision to Miss Patty and Babette, and tries at least once to convince Taylor to make Eurovision week an offical town holiday or at least an event. Taylor will not approve of this anti-American nonsense. That is his loss.

Of course Luke is forced to sit through this every single year. And no he does not like it. He gets angry about the hypocrisy of all the “peace and love”-songs sung by artists representing countries that do not have peace and love in their policies, is intimidated by all the glitter, and could really do without the akward hosts. He will admittedly enjoy the odd dad-rock entry that comes every year, but keep it to himself since everyone else roasts them.

Since Michel is the one who introduced everyone to Eurovision (well, he introduced Lorelai who introduced everyone, but it wouldn’t have happened without him) and since he’s the only actual European around, Michel feels very protective and possessive of it. He will let Rory bait him into talking about how he as a Frenchman views other European countries (it gets stereotypical), and he will at the same time tear a hole into anyone who scoffs at ‘ethnic’ or non-English songs. 

Like his uncle, Jess is not a Eurovision fan and would really like to skip watching this, if only to avoid the crowds that Lorelai gathers for the event. He does like it when audience members sneak up on stage or something goes really wrong. Teenage Jess could stay away because of how things were going around that time of year, but adult Jess who visits multiple times a year for Doula and Luke and has to remain on civil terms with Lorelai cannot escape. And yeah, it might bring Rory joy to watch him awkwardly sandwiched between TJ and Luke watching Verka Serduchka scream numbers in German.

Lane loves Eurovision. She loves the showmanship, loves the variety of musical entries, loves being introduced to country-specific genres. When the internet community around Eurovision grows, she starts finding updates (and eventually streams) of the national selections around Europe and starts watching them as well. For Lane, Eurovision-season starts in December the year before.

Paris doesn’t really get Eurovision at first (noting the same hypocricy issue as Luke), but with time she starts to let loose and enjoy the circus for what it is. She tends to change what genre she prefers every couple of years, but she’s a loyal Portugal-supporter and likes pretending to be as above everyone else as Michel simply because she can speak Portuguese.

Dean never really got Eurovision, but would be fine watching it as long as he was spending time with Rory. Logan tried to convince Rory to get tickets with him and just head on over to Europe once for a finale, but to Rory that would be a betrayal against her tradition with Lorelai and the town. Either they all go or none of them go.

Richard and Emily are appalled by how tacky the whole event is, but they will watch it in the privacy of their home because it’s become a guilty pleasure. They tend to prefer French entries when the French aren’t sending songs like “Moustache”.

Lane has tried to get Hep Alien to add at least one Eurovision song to one of their setlists. She tends to try with safe rock songs like “We Could Be The Same” by maNga or “Something Better” by Softengine, but really she would love to do something hilarous and out of the box for their band, like “Secret Combination” or a Johnny Logan song.

Oh, but Jess liked “Viszlat Nyar” by AWS. He didn’t expect something like that to show up on Eurovision. It was nice.

Rory really enjoys that semi-indie music thing that’s been going on in Belgium and the Netherlands lately. Think “City Lights” by Blanche and “De Diepte” by S10.

Michel’s the kind of Eurovision-fan who prefers divas singing ballads or dancing girls with a whole crew on stage. 

Babette and Miss Patty will cheer for any entry with skimpy outfits, particularly shirtless men. “OPA” in 2010 was a moment for everyone: a fun one for the two of them and traumatizing for everyone else.

Miss Patty makes a whole separate drink for Eurovision. It has edible glitter in it.

Nobody in town seems to know what to make of Australia being in the competition. People like Lorelai and Sookie and Liz don’t mind, while people like Taylor find it categorically wrong that a European song contest has a country from the other side of the globe participate. But nobody even jokes about the US joining. Michel has made sure of that.

Lorelai’s all time favourite entry is Ukraine in 2004. Michel’s favourite is Switzerland in 1988 because of course.

Sookie uses Eurovision week as an excuse to experiment with different European cousines. At first she would do dishes from the host country, but nowadays she will occasionally switch to the country she’s rooting the most for that year or a country that hasn’t had a win in ages.

Michel still has access to voting, and when people catch wind of this it becomes a nightmare for him. Everyone wants to use Michel to vote for their favourite entry, but he refuses to do it for free, and refuses to blow up his phone credit for them. Eventually he gives the entire town 10 votes that they can bid on or agree on together, but either way Michel is getting compensation for this.

Happy (belated) Ace Week, Gilmore Girls fans! 💜🖤🤍

So I started headcanoning Luke as heteroromantic asexual but of course he has no idea he’s asexual or what asexuality means. I also headcanon Rory as demisexual (hetero-demisexual) too. I can explain why… but it would be more fun maybe to explain in fic form. To analyze them from the characters’ own perspective instead of my perspective kind of a thing.

I genuinely would love to write a fic exploring either or both of these things! However… um…

*Sigh* so it’s hard to know how to broach this when Gilmore Girls was so queer-unfriendly of a show, even with a gay main character (Michel) who was in all 8 seasons (8 if you count the revival). The show avoided directly acknowledging his being gay for most of the show, while indirectly acknowledging it every chance they could and making his whole characterization one of mostly comic relief and the butt of all sorts of types of jokes. They very rarely took him seriously as a character. And he was sidelined; not a member of the town in any real way.

But I’m a queer person who has adored Gilmore Girls for nearly 20 years. I still adore so much about it. Started watching it when I was 14 years old and season 4 was wrapping up airing, and I’m 33 years old now. I didn’t know at the time that I was queer, or that my type of queer identity was even an option—I’m a sex-averse asexual but I’m also gray-panromantic, interested in dating people of all genders, and as a woman I have dated other women and a nonbinary person, and I have a lot of queer friends and acquaintances that span nearly every LGBTQ+ identity. This week during Ace Week 2023 marks the 10 year anniversary for me of coming out to myself as asexual. It’s hard to still be so attached to a show that is so cisnormative and heteronormative—and that’s not even mentioning all the queerphobia they wrote into the show via jokes.

During my most recent rewatch of the entire series around December 2020 into February 2021, when I got to somewhere in season 4 I decided to start taking notes of every time queerness is at all referenced, every transphobic and homophobic joke, etc. 

Part of me wants to find a way to salvage that Lorelai joked about liking women herself because actually she was bisexual, like this fits in as a headcanon that the reason she joked so often about it was because it was on her mind for other reasons. I don’t even know if she joked about it that often but fairly often. A lot of the queerphobic jokes generally came from her? But certainly not all. But her jokes sometimes include herself as into women and it just makes you think “What if she really was? All this time?”. Lorelai also teases many other characters, especially Luke quite often, but sometimes people like Sookie or Rory, and implies they are gay or queer in some other way. 

Rory seemed to be much less canonically homophobic and transphobic. She cut her mother off once when her mother was teasing her homophobically and calls the jokes “inappropriate” even and part of this is just Rory didn’t have the same kind of sense of humor as most of the other characters. She seemed less amused by life, by even their jokes, but especially her characterization was just being a person less likely to crack a joke herself. She did tease Paris in ways that evoked referencing queer things or lesbians but I’m not sure Rory’s humor crossed the line of being actually anti-being queer in any way. Some of this humor is more chuckling at double entendres in English rather than chuckling at the existence of queer people? Like Paris saying she’s sleeping with a girl and Rory bringing up The L Word in reaction.

Actually, though, looking back through my notes for season 4-ish till the end, a lot of characters don’t come up much, or the way they come up is in a different context. Jess actually… I don’t think he ever once cracked a queerphobic joke nor laughed at one. He was the butt of two in season 4 (both from TJ). I hadn’t been taking these type of notes in seasons 2 or 3. I have memorized most of Jess’ scenes and I just don’t recall the early seasons having him being queerphobic. I could be wrong though.

I wasn’t taking notes when Dean or Christopher were on the show much so idk if these men had any such moments. And as far as my notes show, Sookie is just the recipient of Lorelai’s teasing at moments, not queerphobic herself. Kirk is not gonna joke about that stuff, just seriously defend himself against being perceived as gay at moments. And the show frames certain things he obliviously says as a gay joke but he’s not purposefully making any. Maybe really the most homophobic characters are Lorelai and even Luke, and at a few times Emily & Richard. 

Logan’s style of homophobic jokes seem more playful and somehow less offensive to me. I don’t know if I’m allowed to say that but there are ways to tease that aren’t based in as problematic of a starting place. It’s like he’s not afraid to include himself in it the most, so he’s not distancing himself from the queerness? Idk I’d have to rewatch to see if I still have that same impression. He’s also just… more worldly than some of the characters feel like to me. He’s experienced bigger city life more or travel and broadened horizons? He sorta seems like he has more friends than a lot of the characters is maybe part of it. But I’d have to rewatch those moments to see how I really feel about Logan’s gay jokes and if this headcanon of him being less homophobic really is valid.

Anyway, here we are…

I basically feel like in order to write a fanfic that feels genuine and actually includes asexuality/the word "asexual" without feeling forced, awkward, etc, it can’t jump to including it. These characters were SO far away from being able to talk about or process that term. These characters needed to grow and change in various ways before it would fit in the worldbuilding and characterization?

I think the only way to make this work is gradually, slowly. The only way is to showcase that these characters actually do have experiences that shape them into being more and more ready for asexuality to exist in their world. The only way I can make it believable is if I can figure out the missing steps on the bridge between where the show was, and where I want the fic to go. I think it’s not just one missing step. It’s not that simple.

I think Lane and Jess were never small towners. Jess came from NYC, then later as an adult moved to live in Philadelphia, both cities. They are the most likely to meet openly queer people and broaden the worlds of people like Lorelai and Luke as they themselves learn and grow. I think it isn’t a stretch to think of Lane and Jess as very much LGBTQ+ allies, and Jess isn’t likely to become the most vocal ally but he… in his own quiet way could very much be one. And he is very closely connected to Luke’s story, even more than Lane, although both of them are. Lane worked for him in the diner and knows him well. Jess and Lane are both extremely connected to Rory’s story. So for either the Luke asexual headcanon or the Rory demisexual one, Jess or Lane could be a key piece of their stories. Anyway I was saying Jess could sneak up on you quietly with his allyship. His would be maybe more casual and incidental perhaps. 

Lane though. Lane is loud. Lane is bold. Lane is the kind of girl the show could have easily chosen to write as queer herself in any number of ways. But the show didn’t. The show wrote her as very much straight. But she’d… RELATE to the queer experience deeply. She’d be drawn to become a vociferous ally, appreciating the LGBT plight because her upbringing made her feel like she wasn’t allowed to be herself, like she knows what it’s like to be disowned by her mother, for her parents to not approve of who she wants to date/who she loves—in her case because they aren’t Korean or aren’t Christian enough. And yes Lorelai lived a very parallel life in some ways to Lane, they are supposed to be mirrors in some ways, but there are key differences.

I feel like Lane, also in part because she’s younger, is easier to imagine as this kind of ally. A big difference between Lane and Lorelai is that Lane started in the small conservative mostly white town as an outsider racially, too. And she leaves to go on tour, to broaden her horizons and was never destined to stay in that small town forever. (I say screw the revival’s mistreatment of Lane.) Lorelai wasn’t raised in that small town, and instead Lorelai chose it for her adult self and feels at home in it. That’s a very different story.

Lorelai, however, has an interesting additional point for the start of some change or growth. Lorelai has Michel. She has been bearing witness to his life for basically decades as a close friend, theoretically. Michel could call her out on her bullshit at some point. He could tell her something she is saying is offensive, is crossing a line that isn’t hers to cross. 

Also if my headcanon about Luke is to come to fruition, then Lorelai is dealing with being in a long-term romantic relationship with a man who isn’t super into their sex life. The way I interpret his asexuality is that he’s… not really into sex. He’s having sex pretty much only because she wants to. His sex drive is low. He’s very romantic, but he’s not very sexual. She’s always initiating. Her sexual flirting is making him uncomfortable. And he’s just… idk. I have a lot to explore specific to this headcanon once I figure out the fic I’m writing. I just think Lorelai will be somewhat primed to believe in and accept the existence of asexuality since she’s been living with a complicated truth that neither her nor her partner understood—that Luke’s potential weirdness around sex/their sex life could be explained by asexuality. I’m not saying they never have sex. But it could explain why when the revival started something had held them back from actually getting married all those years. It could explain some of the issues between them. And it definitely works well alongside the fact that Luke spent so many years single.

I think in order to write this fic, I need to outline a plot that establishes a relatively gradual shift in these characters’ appreciation for the fact that not everyone is straight in the world. That there are more possibilities, make sexual orientation generally something that could comfortably be discussed in a Gilmore Girls style way, with tasteful humor sprinkled in but no longer punching down or ridiculing people who are gay or gender-nonconforming. 

I think I could do it. I just need to find or make the time for it. 

So. I was gonna write a short ace fic for Ace Week while it was still #AceWeek2023 and instead I wrote this meta essay adjacent thing and posted it slightly late. post s7, rory and jess shares luke's apartment above the diner every time each of them is in town (jess for his sister, rory visits a lot to watch over will) and after a while it's became their apartment and their little place full of books and articles rory has to publish and jess edits for her. it's doesn't happen right away, it's very awkward when they realize both of them in town and needs to share the apartment so rory literally says she'll go to lorelai's place if she bothered him and jess is all "rory, you never bothered me." and after a few years..... it's their apartment.
