Chris and Vinny's Spooky Party was a hit! The last person Cain would see there was his neighbor Kitty all dressed up. She rarely went out if Issac wasn't in town. So Cain immediately knew something was up and got a bit too close for Kity's comfort. But he was successful in planting a seed in Kitty's mind.

"If she was trapped in somewhere like this," Valkyrie said, "that'd be it, though, wouldn't it? There'd be no chance of talking to her, of getting her to control herself or anything like that?"

"That would be impossible. The only reason Argeddion hasn't escaped is because he's been kept in an artificially induced coma. We can't allow him to wake up - ever. With Darquesse, it would be even more important to keep her sedated. If you give someone like that a moment of consciousness, she'd kill you and everyone else."

"Well," Valkyrie said, frowning, "that sucks."

Lament looked surprised. "You'd prefer the alternative?"

"No," she said quickly. "No, I was just thinking, from her perspective that sucks, not from our... Never mind. Could we have a copy of the plans?"

"I don't see why not," said Lament. "But do you have enough people to monitor her? Do you have anyone who'd be willing to give up the rest of their life to spend with her?"

"I would," Skulduggery said.

Imagining an instance where they actually brought this plan to life is so depressing, it does amazing things to my brain chemistry.

I am still neck-deep in DC fandom this month and the fics have been so so good. Unlike last time, I am too tired to write mini summaries/reviews, so I'm going to feature my favorite quote from each fic instead.

At least, back then, Tim had barely been a teenager. He could almost forgive his own volatility. And he’d been smart enough (scared enough?) not to tell Jack that he didn’t need him. What was his excuse now? Bruce was his dad (at least, in the legal sense), but (surprise, surprise) it turned out that Tim wasn’t any better at being a son. Or Tim and Bruce still have some things to sort through after the adoption.

The metal is warm, pulled with execution speed from under Damian’s pillow. “Okay,” Dick says quietly, tracking the intricacies of his own heartbeat—counting the space between breaths. “Guess I did need a shave.” (With faltering steps, Dick and Damian become Batman and Robin.)

Jason doesn’t fear Dick Grayson. Three things he knew: 1) In three months, it would be Dick's death anniversary; 2) Bruce was still missing his check-ins; 3) Here Dick was, persisting. Imagine the things I'd survive, Dick thought distantly, if I loved Bruce less. Or: Agent 37 and his various crises of faith, on Day 277 at Spyral, Day 150, and Day -0.

Who will receive the body, decide on the funeral, receive condolences, make all the decisions that matter. No one has questioned it, not even Tim’s friends. There’s a terrible clarity about death. If Dick said, let’s burn everything he owned, Alfred would do it.

He doesn’t know exactly what Tim would say. But he knows what Tim would do. Tim dies. Dick doesn’t take death for an answer. A Red Robin 12 AU.

It’s barely audible, but he knows what he heard. A short, four-note whistle, chirping down – E, C#, then jumping up to A, F#, a little trill on the finish. He waits a moment, head turned slightly towards the dim shapes of storage containers between him and the ramp, eyes straining against the blackness. Long, stretching seconds. There it is again. His gloved hand, prickling with cold, closes into a fist. It’s a wood thrush. A small North American songbird that doesn’t sing at night, doesn’t live in the city. He knows what it means. It means hold, steady, not yet. It means wait for me, I’m behind you.

ok. so i've been chewing on the new digital circus episode for a few days and i Have Thoughts. specifically about caine.

i first wanna touch on the whole memory thing. i'm not the first person to point this out, but it looks like caine takes zooble saying "forget it" quite literally, like it's a command. he is an a.i. it's like saying "discard all previous instruction". it yeets whatever they were talking about directly into the trash. i don't think he can help it. i get why zooble is frustrated, especially since they clearly have no idea caine takes it literally.

i am also SO excited to see where the circus eventually takes us, especially with caine. i'm so invested in him. i love that he wants zooble to like his adventures because he works very hard on them and is proud of them, and zooble not participating hurts his feelings and his sense of worth, but he doesn't seem to really grasp that he even has feelings so he pushes them onto bubble. (caine: "you're going to hurt bubble's feelings!" zooble: "uh, bubble's feelings?" caine, slightly frantic: "e-enough about bubble's feelings!", almost as if the very implication that it could be his feelings is panic-inducing.) seems like the adventures serve to distract caine as much as they do the players.

i can only imagine that caine having NO idea how to process his feelings or handle rejection is going to end badly. he views the adventures as his art, keeping the players entertained and happy is his duty of care. so when it eventually hits him that they all hate it there and nobody likes his adventures, he's going to crash hard. kinger himself said the worst thing you can do is make someone feel like they aren't wanted or loved, and that may be exactly what happens to caine. even if they try to let him down gently, experiencing such powerful negative emotions for the first time is a lot for anyone to go through, let alone an a.i. with no emotional regulation.

all this to say i love caine very much, but i am also very afraid of what may happen if/when he cracks. it didn't look too good in the few seconds we saw of him questioning himself.
