@showcrime SAID: "silver?" kris's eyes widened at the sight of him, all too aware of her uniform, the r blazing across her chest. she didn't think he was around - not that she could have shirked out on the mission - but she'd have tried to be further in if she'd known. "what are you- you can't be here right now."
Silver had come to expect many things of Kris; she and Gold were baffling to a degree that the rival would never be able to rightly describe. A sickening amount of compassion that he would never be able to attest to. So seeing her here now, clad in a uniform under an organisation he's come to greatly despise... forgive him if his blood boils, just a little.

– my proxy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: wise x gn!reader
premise: belle is currently suffering from an incurable disease of watching her brother play oblivious to your obvious hints of affection. she only prays that you confess soon or at least realize that wise actually feels the same.
– warnings: none
– author's notes: i am so normal about wise. whenever he starts talking in game i just burst into a fit of giggles. filler post for now. | ~700 words.
Tumblr media
wise despite his name, wasn’t all that wise when it comes to noticing the very obvious hints you throw at him (or maybe he does know, he just isn’t speaking up about it). but belle does, and it sends her into a fit of giddy giggles that she hides behind her fist whenever it happens.
a fond and amused glint in her eyes whenever wise gets flustered after you call him “my proxy”. it wasn’t anything out of ordinary, wise always calls himself your proxy anyways, but whenever you do it on missions or when you go to hollows to accompany the cunning hares, it never fails to flush his cheeks a pretty pink. belle would let out a snicker and kick his feet from under the table and she’s always met with a warning glare. not once has he mentioned the romantic undertones of your words despite picking up on it himself.
or the times when you would always drop by their store to hangout in his room. more often than not, when belle comes to check on you both, you’d be fast asleep on his bed with a bangboo in between you two. a devious smirk would always creep up belle’s face when she tip toes into the room and quietly open the cap of a washable marker to write on both of your faces. wise, when he wakes up, would come running down the stairs to chase belle around for writing “[name]’s proxy” in big bold letters on his cheek while you laugh. never once wiping the words of “wise’s hollow raider” with a heart on the cheek opposite to wise’s.
belle isn’t ignorant nor is wise, but it does frustrate her when her brother doesn’t speak up about his very obvious feelings about you. a sudden feeling of irritation blooming within her chest when she sees your crestfallen expression when wise keeps calling you “just a friend” when general cop or the tin master ask what your relationship is. belle doesn't miss the flash of slight hurt in your eyes before you mask it with an awkward smile and wave of your hand, agreeing with what wise said even though you obviously want to be something more than just a friend.
she’s frustrated with you too. the hours the two of you spend in their workspace, curled up on the couch as you vent out your frustration at wise’s obliviousness. eight out of ten times, belle would just urge you to confess directly, however, you would always go quiet and murmur into the bangboo in your arms that confessing isn’t an option. at first, belle was rightfully confused. she saw how you looked at wise; you looked at him as if he hung the sun and moon himself. he was your entire world and you had him putty in your hands with just two words. it wasn’t until the day after when belle finally realizes –when nicole has her arms wrapped around your waist and an angry flush on her face when you enter their store battered and bruised, but still smiling– that this was a first for you too.
before becoming a regular client, you would recklessly jump into hollows without a carrot or a proxy. barely making it out alive if nicole hadn’t found you and made you a member of her little band of misfits. you were enamored with wise when he first patched you up. you didn’t have anyone before him that cared enough to lecture you about danger, your recklessness, and bad habits. he was probably the first person that genuinely showed concern for you so belle understood for a moment why you didn’t want to confess. she’s watched enough romance movies and read books and comics to know that confessing has its risks. your friendship that you painstakingly built with her brother brick by brick would come crumbling down if you said those three words.
“my dearest proxies,” you barreled into their store front with a bright grin. belle doesn’t miss the twinkle in wise’s eyes when he sees you. “let’s go out for lunch. my treat!”
“what’s the occasion?” wise asks, putting down the boxes of videotapes on the counter to give you his undiverted attention.
your grin reached your eyes as you waved a piece of parchment in front of them both. “it’s paycheck day! and what better way than to treat my proxies to lunch for taking such good care of me.”
“count me in!” belle merrily jogs towards you and gives you a high five.
“what do you say wise?” belle flashed her brother with a knowing look. the boy only shook his head and started leading the two of you out the store.
“well, how can i say no to free food?”
wise stole a laugh from your lungs as you tangled your arms with them both. “that’s my proxy. now let’s go!”
belle never misses the way wise’s cheeks flush whenever you intertwine your arms together; it was as easy as breathing for you. she just hopes that one day you’ll see for yourself that wise also feels the same, he’s just clueless and a little shy to show it unlike you.

✮ DEMO (457K) ✮ FAQ ✮ PLAYLISTS ✮ PATREON
Latest update -> 9/08/2024
You're going to be a superstar, no matter what it takes.
You and your friends have been in a band since high school, when all you were was a lead singer to a band that played out of someone's garage and did occasional birthday party gigs for the neighborhood kids. after years of grinding, your band has yet to make it big, but has managed a small and dedicated cult following. All you and your bandmates want is to see your names in glittery lights, traveling the world to perform for millions of fans.
Your chance comes in Misfit Alley's Battle of the Bands. After auditioning every year with no success, your band has finally gotten the opportunity to tour across the United States and open for the biggest band in the world, performing against other bands in the hopes that you win and get signed.
As you perform, your fame rises and you can see the dream coming to fruition. But with fame comes problems of its own, some that might just ruin you and the band you swore to take to the top.
Infamous is rated 18+ for explicit language, explicit sexual themes, drug and alcohol use, violence, morally questionable behavior, and more.
✮ FEATURES ✮ CHARACTER INTROS ✮
Customize your MC (the lead singer of your band)'s appearance and personality, as well as their public image and persona. Are they loved or hated by the public? Controversial or appeasing? Humble or arrogant? Fame and money-hungry or simply there for the music?
Following that, work on your band's public image and whether they're mainstream or underground, depending on the choice of music you release and what kind of promo you do. Is your band hated by parents due to its explicit content or is your band squeaky clean, perfect for a mainstream label?
Engage in fiery romance with an array of wild characters, including some that may just get you into hot water with the rumor mill.
Create your own lyrics and decide whether you want to be a genuine artist or the face of a brand.
Get rich and famous ! Isn't that what you're here for?
✮THE BAND + ROs✮
The Band Manager: Orion/Oriana Quinn ✮ he/him or she/her, 35 ✮ [RO] -- strict and reserved, O is the antithesis of what a rockstar is. Some call their cold and uptight demeanor having 'a stick up their ass' but they call it being business focused. O is all about bringing the band to the top, which includes being professional at all times.
Special romance route: you can choose to have been chasing O for years, to no success (until now?)
The New Addition: August Pierce ✮ they/them, 26 ✮ [RO] -- With the exit of your bandmate, August has taken her place as the band's drummer. Usually shy and reserved, that all goes out the window once they start playing. You wonder if their isolation is less a personality trait and more the fact that they're in a band with longtime friends. Doesn't matter--seems like it'll take a while for you to get close to them regardless.
The Idol: Griffin/Gina 'Gigi' Reign ✮ he/him or she/her, 28 ✮ [RO] -- the spunky, charming and controversial lead singer of Misfit Alley and now your mentor, G Reign is currently the most famous person on Earth. Everyone either hates them, wants to be them, or wants to fuck them. Of course, this means a slew of trouble if one gets close to them...that is if they even allow it.
Special romance route: engage in an affair / engage in a strictly physical relationship (that can lead to a romantic one) // poly route with Victoria Valentine
The Rival: Seven Lawless ✮ he/him or she/her, 27 ✮ [RO] -- once your best friend or ex, they are now your rival and the lead singer of Soft Violence, another band competing for Battle of the Bands. They hate you. Still, the line between love and hate is a whole lot of passion.
Special romance route: can either be an ex or a former best friend, enemies to lovers.
The Girl Dad: Sebastian Holland ✮ he/him, 33 ✮ [RO] -- a normal and friendly data analyst, Sebastian isn't about the music scene....but his daughter is and she's a superfan of your band. Sebastian is your typical 'nice guy' almost too nice, sometimes, and has been dragged along by his daughter to follow the Battle of the Bands for her birthday. He's just a normal civilian. The last thing you should do is get to know him, right?
The Eye Candy: Victoria Valentine ✮ she/her, 27 ✮ [RO] -- G Reign's wife, she's an upcoming actress and model. Victoria has been G's eye candy since they came up on the scene, but you can almost sense the tension between them. And the way Victoria seeks shelter in someone else...that could be you.
Special romance route: engage in an affair // poly route with G Reign
✮BAND MEMBERS✮
Rowan Hart (he/him) -- guitarist
Iris De Luca (she/her) - keyboardist
Devyn Powell -- (they/she) bassist, background vocals
reblogs appreciated! and thank you for your interestttt

bad idea, right?
Pairing: Adam (Hazbin Hotel) x Sinner!Reader
Inspiration: Prompts #47 (“you’re so fucking hot when you’re mad.”) from Prompt List 1 and #34 (“hate is not the word. i loathe you.”) from Prompt List 3
Warnings: Spoilers for Season 1 of Hazbin Hotel, heavy cursing, homophobic language, Adam is just generally an asshole (duh), mentions of murder, depression (?), angst, digital stimulation, choking, general kinda rough smut (18+, minors DNI!!!)
Word Count: 1,657
Author’s Note: So ever since that Hazbin finale, I’ve loved the concept of Adam getting sent to Hell, mirroring how Sir Pentious was redeemed to Heaven. So, since it’s Hell, I figured this would make sense to have it be a little darker and more mature than my typical stuff. So yeah, minors DNI (for real, I don’t want to have to block anyone). If people like this, I might try my hand at other Hazbin characters if I feel so moved (or if anyone sends in a request). As always, check out my Masterlist, About Me page, and Prompt Lists if you do want to send in a request! Happy reading, you degenerates.

“Would you get your hands off me? I just stepped in the door, asshole.”
“Did anyone see you?”
The door slammed behind you, shaking the walls of the seedy motel room on the west side of Pentagram City. Needy hands were already roaming over your figure, and you groaned in frustration.
“No,” you hissed, shrugging away from Adam’s grasp, taking off your overcoat. It was raining heavily that night, so most of the denizens of Hell had confined themselves to the indoors for the evening. That is if they weren’t working the corner or trying to find their next fix.
“As if I want to be spotted here anyways,” you huffed, “I have a reputation to uphold too, ya know.”
“Reputation,” he repeated, his golden eyes glowering beneath the horned mask that he still insisted on wearing. He chuckled darkly, “If I was seen cavorting around with a fucking sinner, there would be zero chance of me getting back to where I rightfully belong.”
Adam couldn’t fathom how this happened to him. He was then first man, the first human, and wielded unimaginable angelic power beyond comprehension.
But he was taken out by a two-foot tall, one-eyed maid with a penchant for stabbing. It almost would’ve been badass if it didn’t result in his untimely demise.
Next thing he knew, he woke up hours later, his angelic form altered into a tacky red and black cloak and broken wings. He still maintained his gold pupils, a haunting reminder of his previous afterlife.
And now he was a fallen angel.
Fallen.
Fallen. All because of that clit-licker Charlie Morningstar and her merry band of misfits. Which, at the present moment, included you. You had decided to take up residence at the Hazbin Hotel, and it made his blood boil.
So why did he still feel so drawn to you?
“Newsflash, but you’re down here too, dickwad,” you spat, taking offense to his comment, “You fucked up big time going after Lucifer’s daughter, and you’ve got no one to blame but yourself.”
Before you could launch into a tirade, Adam grabbed you firmly, pulling you flush against him, “Ya know,” he purred, “You’re so fucking hot when you’re mad.”
“Pig.”
“Talking back will only make you pay for it later, dollface,” he growled, his dick twitching under his robe as he eyed you hungrily, “And if you didn’t like it, why do you keep coming back for more, hmm?”
You glared at him. The truth was, you didn’t know. He was the antithesis of everything you were trying to work toward; ever since the Princess of Hell had let you seek refuge in her hotel, you felt like you actually could be on the path to redemption.
That is, before you had a chance encounter with a fallen angel—and not just any fallen angel, but Earth’s first man—who also happened to be a massive shithead. You almost felt bad about lying to Charlie and the rest of the crew, but there was something about Adam that made it impossible for you to stay away.
You felt your insides twist as Adam spun you around so your ass was pressed against him, his form much larger and intimidating than your own. You let out a groan as his fingers weaved through your hair, giving it a slight tug as he pulled it back to expose your neck.
He nipped at the sensitive skin by your collarbone, while his other hand deftly palmed around the front of your skirt until it was hiked up to expose your panties. You should’ve been disgusted by the thought of him—and oftentimes, you were—but that didn’t stop your body from tingling with arousal.
He could sense it, the anger radiating off of you. It only turned him on more. These days, he only felt this kind of thrill when he was taunting you, teasing you until you came undone around him.
It was almost as good as when he would come down for his yearly visit, slaughtering sinners with his faithful lieutenant by his side.
Almost.
“Can’t hate me that much when you’re wet as fuck for me, huh hot stuff?” he said, his voice low in your ear. His grip tightened, the discomfort of his clawed fingers becoming almost unbearable.
“Hate is not the word,” you muttered, venom laced in your words, “I loathe you. I should do all of Hell a favor and kill you for good.”
You both knew your threats were empty. Having been an angel, Adam possessed more power than half the overlords of Hell. There was nothing special about you. If he wanted, he could snap you like a twig.
But despite his best efforts, Adam was incredibly lonely. Despondent, even. He didn’t know who he was without his legion of exterminators and Lute.
He had no plan to take over even a measly quadrant of Pentagram City, because he was struggling with the point of it all. Most overlords were now armed to the teeth with angelic weapons, which meant one more stab to the back and he was done for good.
Maybe an end to this misery would be good, but he so desperately wanted to claw his way back to Heaven that it wasn’t a risk he was currently willing to take.
He felt like a pathetic coward. But at least he had you to torment. At least when he was with you, he could stifle the cacophony of melancholia in his head. For a little while, anyways.
“Ugh, I love it when you talk dirty,” he mused, unphased by your aggression as he removed your shirt, exposing your breasts. His fingers moved your clit as he stroked you through your underwear, making you flinch, “Face it, toots. You might not be as fucked up as I am, but you have to admit this is adds just the right amount of spice to your miserable fucking existence.”
“If you’re gonna monologue all night about me being demon scum, I can go,” you shot back, glancing back at him with an annoyed look splashed across your face. “Besides, I told you last time, I’m not fucking you if you keep that stupid mask on.”
The digital façade he wore fell into a scowl, but Adam caved almost immediately and tossed the mask aside, revealing his tousled brown hair and piercing eyes. A five o’clock shadow adorned his face, and you’d almost consider him handsome if you knew nothing about his personality.
He pushed you onto the bed, his fingers threading to grip your hair again, making your back arch. Your comfort was the last thing on Adam’s mind. A part of him actually liked that you fought back against him; being challenged made fucking you even more interesting.
You could feel how hard he was against your ass, and the pit in your stomach started to tense as you felt his cock rub against your folds, your panties now hanging pathetically from your ankles after he ripped them away from your waist.
Satan forbid he actually take off that stupid outfit of his; he had no problem disrobing you, but you didn’t have time to protest. With a sudden thrust, he sheathed himself into you, making you moan involuntarily.
You could almost hear the smirk coming from behind you as Adam began to pound into you almost immediately, his pace steady and rough. “You’re gonna take it like a good little slut, aren’t you?” he mocked, not letting on how perfect you felt around him, “You know there isn’t demon dick in all of Hell that’s as good as the original.”
How this guy got into Heaven in the first place, you’d never know. “Wouldn’t be too sure of that,” you needled as he pulled you to him again, his strokes getting deeper and making your abdomen tighten, “I’ve heard Lucifer is amazing in bed.”
You knew this would set him off; any time you invoked Lucifer’s name, you knew you were playing with fire.
Adam growled in your ear, his temper flaring. His rhythm quickened, becoming more frantic and desperate. You felt your eyes starting to water as he slammed into you, causing your pussy to throb around him.
Before you could utter another insult, you felt his hand finally loosen its grip on your hair and rest on your throat, squeezing the sides of your neck as he continued fucking you from behind.
He wasn’t going to forget that comment, but he could bitch about Lucifer later; he had more pressing matters at hand.
“Doesn’t matter, babe,” he said, his breathing starting to get ragged as he inched closer to coming inside you, “Your cunt is mine.” Adam might’ve been a sadistic asshole, but he was no idiot; he knew you were just as wretched and alone as he was.
You had to be if you were willingly sneaking around with God’s former favorite on a regular basis.
Which suited him just fine. If he was really damned, he might as well fill his time filling someone else.
His grasp tightened around your throat, and you felt your climax building inside you as he rutted against you at a now punishing speed. “Fuck you,” you squeaked out, trying to sound intimidating, but it was hopeless.
You unraveled around him a few moments later, spasming as you gasped for air, the constriction around your throat deliciously agonizing. Adam spilled into you soon after, a low hum of pleasure emitting from him. Him coming inside you was the most intimate he’d get as far your hookups were concerned.
Feeling equal parts disgusted and satisfied, you pulled your underwear back on, resting on your elbows and finally able to look him into the eye again. Even in the lusty post-sex haze, you could feel the sadness in his stare.
“So,” he drawled, leaning down to close the gap between you, “Same time next week?”

The Rut (Marko x Fem!Reader)
It is finally here! The next installment of the rut series!! I'm glad everyone is liking this so far. As I said in the Paul one, every boy will be getting his own part. (Also since I've been asked, this isn't really a poly relationship series, this is a "only (insert boy) likes reader" kinda thing).
So this series was inspired by @auntvamp 's headcannons about the boys in rut, and when I say that I couldn't help but write this after reading those lol. I'd highly suggest reading that first. I also got inspired by Marko NSFW headcanons
Lastly I'd like to thank @santacarlatourism for their headcanons of each boy's scent on my post

"Do NOT invite him in"
That's what David had told you when he informed you to stay away from the cave for the next couple of days. You were confused when David had met you at the entrance the night before, you were fully prepared to spend the night at the boardwalk with the boys and your favorite vampire, but David had quickly shot down those plans.
"Wait…A rut? Like how animals have ru-"
"Yes just like that" he told you as he walked you back to your car.
"You see when we go into these we are very dangerous to you, if you were a vampire you would be ok but since you're a human you're far more…"
"Fragile" you finished, the boys had all told you that before, taking it upon themselves to protect you all the time because you were "like a China doll" in Dwayne's words.
"So you understand why it's best if you just stay away for a couple of days" he explained, to which you could only simply nod as you climbed in your car. Your thoughts suddenly taking a turn as you thought of him…they were all extremely attractive…him especially…and you knew him taking a partner for a quick time was something he had done before…would that happen again? After all, if he was gonna kill them anyways why not? It didn't matter if they were fragile right? But why did that thought make you wanna cry even more in this situation?
"It's not like that" David's voice broke you out of your thoughts and you were unsure if he had read your thoughts or could just read your emotions.
"Go home y/n, don't overthink, you can come back soon" he told you as he shut your car door, watching as you started the car and rolled down the window when he knocked
"And one more thing" he told you while leaning in.
"Do NOT invite him in"
So here you were, sitting in your room, listening to music and drawing, wishing you could just go hang out with the boys, you hadn't really realized just how much of a staple in your life they had become until now. Night's seemed boring without them…without him. Sighing you sat your sketchbook down on your nightstand after you realized that in your zoned out state you had successfully sketched what was probably the twentieth picture of him that resided in the book. Stretching, you got up and changed the music, putting on the Misfits album you had bought the first time the boys had taken you to the record shop, Marko had been more than happy that someone liked the same music as him. As Helena began playing you could feel your body move with the beat, getting lost in the rhythm and memories of that night, his smile and excitement as he showed you all his favorite bands. Your body came to a sudden halt though when you heard a faint tapping on your window, you wondered if you had actually heard it or was it perhaps the wind, almost ready to chalk it up to the wind you heard it again, though this time there was a slight scratch with every tap.
"Oh Y/N" you heard Marko's sing-song tone ring out, but it was different, that underlying growl and rasp told you he was in his vampire form.
"Do NOT let him in" David's stern words rang in your head as you stared at your window, curtains drawn.
"Come on baby, I know you're in there" he stated from the outside of the glass.
"Marko" you breathed, a low growl responding to your words.
"Yeah cutie it's me, wanna let me in baby?" He asked, voice dripping in a sweet tone but you could hear the danger behind it. Truth be told out of the four boys Marko had you the most on edge when he was vamped out, you had seen him feed, and even David had told you that Marko could be very unpredictable at times when he was like this…throw in the fact that he was in rut and the knowledge had you gulping…A sound he must have heard.
"What's wrong babe?" You could hear the smirk on his voice.
"I'm not supposed to let you in Marko" you told him, listening as another low growl left him.
"And why is that?" He asked, his tone losing all sweetness.
"David told me not to"
"David doesn't know shit" he stated angrily, and you were honestly shocked, you had never heard him speak about David like that before, besides him and Paul, he and David were the closest.
"Marko it might not be a good ide-"
"Let me in y/n!" He told you sternly, his voice deeping more and the sudden change and words made you jump, he had never gotten angry at you before.
"Come on baby" he spoke after a moment, his tone softer.
"I'll explain everything if you let me in" You still hesitated, unsure if you should, you hated being away from Marko but you weren't sure if this was wise.
"Please y/n" he pleaded, and you noted that his voice sounded slightly strained, like he was really hurting. Taking a deep breath you slowly made your way over to the window, slowly pulling back the black out curtains and coming face to face with Marko who stood on the small balcony. You were right about him being vamped out, golden eyes met (e/c) as he stared at you, a small smile on his lips before he gave you a little wave.
"Hey baby" you took note of the fact that he wasn't wearing his jacket, a big deal for him since you were sure that thing was part of his body at this point, you also noticed his breathing was heavier than normal, like someone who had run miles, or maybe he had just fed? That thought made you relax a bit, and slowly open your window.
"Marko I'm still not sur-" you had started but was quickly cut off as he grabbed your face and crashed his lips against yours. One hand gliding through your hair before gripping it, the other running down your side before you started feeling him tugging you out of the window, you realized at that moment if you didn't let him in, he would just bring you outside. His fangs grazed your lips as he parted them with his own, you noted that there wasn't a strong metallic taste, which meant that he had in fact, not fed that night. A thought that should have made you more worried if your brain wasn't beginning to become fuzzy. You weren't sure if it was the lack of oxygen, vampire magic, or the fact that the scent of leather, slight weed and Patchouli from being around Paul, the ever present exhaust smell from their bikes, mint and the scent that you could only describe as simply, Marko, seemed to be a hundred times stronger. He broke the kiss once he remembered that humans needed to breathe, and instead started kissing down your neck.
"Invite me in baby" he spoke against your skin, giving light nips to it while his hand joined the other on your side, tugging you.
"Invite me in and I'll explain it all" he told you, lips ghosting over yours again as you nodded.
"Words cutie" he smiled against your lips.
"You can come inside" you whispered, feeling his smile widen.
"I'll remember that" he spoke before the next thing you knew you were being pushed back into your room. He quickly gripped your thighs, easily picking you up and dropping you down on the bed.
"Marko, you said you would exp-"
"Explanation later, fucking now" he told you as he climbed onto of you and reconnected your lips, the kiss was messy, hands ripping your clothes off, quite literally. You could hear the fabric shredding in his hands as he tore it from your body, hands gripping your newly exposed skin while his lips descended to your neck, leaving dark marks to show everyone in Santa Carla just who you belonged to. You swear to yourself mentally that you should not have found his completely feral attitude as hot as you did. His hands slid down your sides, claws leaving red trails where blood began to surface, the feeling causing you to yelp at the sudden pain and you could hear the giggle from him. You felt his kisses begin to move down, his hands gripping your breasts while his mouth lowered further, attacking your stomach and hips with nips, just hard enough to break the skin a bit but not hard enough to make you bleed a lot. And everytime a drop of red surfaced, it was quickly lapped up, a growl now constant from him as he abandoned one of your breasts, clawed hand coming down to grip your thigh, sinking his nails into the tender flesh and smiling against it when he heard you gasp. He knew how much he was affecting you, he could smell it from the moment he threw you on the bed, the pure scent of arousal. It was a scent he had smelled on you many times before, times when you would come in, trying to act like nothing was wrong, but he knew what had gotten you so worked up, he had found the romance novel on your bedside table one night when he went to pick you up so you could hang out with them, you had rushed to go get ready as he sat on your bed and skimmed through it. He couldn't help but roll his eyes at how…vanilla the whole book was, and he wondered if that was really what you were into…until he noticed the book slightly peeking out from under your pillow. Snatching it up he examined the cover, another shirtless guy, but this one with blood covering his front, opening it up he quickly realized the subject…Vampires…and rough sex…the smirk on his face couldn't get any bigger as he quickly tucked it back in it's hiding spot before you came out. He knew thoughts also fluttered through your mind the one time you saw them feed, he had smelled it, mixed in with all the blood, the pure scent of you, and man did he want to just bend you over right there on the beach and show you what it was like with a real vampire, not just reading about it. You could feel his fangs grazing your skin every time he kissed it, and although the thought of fangs near such a tender area should have scared you, it only heightened everything. You were sure he could hear your heartbeat racing as you watched him with lidded eyes, watched as his tongue pressed against your thighs to lick up the blood his claws had caused.
'Fuuuck, just bite' you found yourself thinking as you watched him, your core clenching at the thought. A thought…that he seemed to be able to read, if the laugh was anything to go by. It was a very teasing laugh, that and the Cheshire grin he gave worried you that he was about to make fun of you.
"So needy" he all but purred.
"M-Marko I-"
"Marko I" he repeated in a mocking tone, body slowly crawling over you.
"You what hmm? Need me to fuck you? Need me to use you? Need me to claim what's mine?" He asked, smiling down at you, watching your every move. His words had you moaning, the thoughts they brought about were absolutely filthy. Marko holding you down and just taking what was his, because that's what you wanted, you wanted to be his.
"All mine huh?" He whispered, breath fanning against your ear.
"You wanna be all mine?"
"Y-yes" you breathed.
"My good little human?" he said, kissing back down your body.
"Yes" you whimpered, as you felt his breath on your dripping core.
"My mate" he all but growled, and the sound paired with his words had your hips bucking up towards him, you expected to hear him laughing at your neediness for him again, but when you looked down you were met with almost glowing gold.
"Say it" he told you, hands gripping your thighs tight, he already had them up, slightly resting on his shoulders.
"M-Marko-"
"Say it"
"Yes"
"Yes what?"
"I-I wanna-"
"Say that you are" he growled, and it was only now that you noticed his heavy breaths again, like he was restraining himself.
"I'm your mate" you whispered.
"What was that cutie?" He asked, head lowering ever so slightly.
"I'm your mate" you spoke a bit more loudly, and watched as he smirked.
"Damn right you are" and with that his mouth attached to your clit, giving it a harsh suck before his tongue ran along your slit. The sudden action had your hand shooting down to his hair, fingers tangling in his golden curls while your other gripped the sheets, head thrown back as a loud moan left you. He growled against you, vibrations sending even more pleasure shooting through you. His name left your lips in a pleading moan, your hand pulling at his curls as you felt him smile against you, your neediness causing him to chuckle as he doubled his efforts, tongue circling your clit before diving inside, then running along your slit before back to your clit. The way he basically made out with your core had your moans pitching quickly, the coil in your belly tightening with every swipe of his tongue or harsh suck. But it was the feeling of his tongue paired with the feeling of his claws digging into your thighs, slowly creating crimson lines that had you tossing your head back, screaming his name as you tugged at his curls with both hands, your hips lifting to meet his tongue as you rode out your high. He let you, happily gave you your orgasm and then some, keeping you in place as you started to become overstimulated. He watched the tears start to cloud your vision as he continued his work, only stopping when you had sobbed his name enough. His lips were on yours in an instant, the taste of yourself falling into your tongue as he dominated the kiss, only breaking it when he flipped you over, pulling you up onto your hands and knees. You whimpered as you felt him undoing his pants, lowering them enough to release himself but keeping them on. You felt him lean over you, his hands on either side of your own, his breath fanning across your neck as he spoke lowly.
"Beg me"
"Marko" you whined, trying to push yourself back against him, but he held you still with a hand around your waist.
"Beg" he told you again, beginning to kiss and bite along your shoulders.
"I know you know how to, so beg for it, tell me how much you want it" he teased, slowly beginning to grind against you, the friction amazing but not enough.
"Please Marko" you panted
"P-Please fuck me"
"Such a dirty mouth" he chuckled, letting go of your waist and bringing his hand up to your lips, you didn't hesitate to start sucking on the two fingers he pressed to your them, not stopping under his glove touched your lips.
"Some other time I'll have to put it to good use" he all but purred at your actions.
"But since you asked so nicely" he started, and you felt his free hand reach between the two of you, before you felt him run the tip through your folds, gathering your wetness before pressing inside. You couldn't hold back the moan you released around his fingers as he pushed forward until he completely bottomed out, your eyes rolling back at the feeling of just how well he filled and stretched you.
"Like you were fuckin made for me" he chuckled against your skin, his voice strained as he rested his forehead against your spine.
"Though I guess you kinda were huh?" He smiled. Pulling his hand away from your mouth to hold your one hand while the other lowered to hold your other hand.
"I'm not gonna be gentle baby" he told you, watching as you nodded before he started his fast pace. Not gentle was right, you felt his hips hit your ass with his brutal pace and you found yourself being pushed forward. His hands left yours, instead grabbing your shoulders to lift your body back up, his pace never faltering as you heard him moan.
"So.fuckin.tight" he growled, claws digging into your skin as he pounded away. You couldn't stop your own moans at this point even if you tried, the feeling of him filling you again and again had you seeing stars, and had you practically sobbing his name as you clawed at the sheets for something to ground you.
"You like this baby?" He hissed
"Like me just doing whatever I want with you?" He laughed, watching as you hung your head, a moan leaving as you took everything he gave.
"Fuck" he groaned.
"Such a good little mate" he smiled, letting go of your shoulders to lean over you again, his chest pressed against your back and you couldn't help but moan at the feeling of his shirt pressed against your heated skin.
"Taking everything I give you" he hissed, hands holding your hips as he gave a harsher thrust, your body jolting forward again, and again.
"Shit you're getting tighter, are you gonna come already?" He laughed breathlessly.
"We just got started and you've already come twice" he smiled against your shoulder, his hips picking up their fast pace again. Your second orgasm washed over you quickly, your body still sensitive from the first and you heard him hiss as he slowed his motions, giving more shallow thrusts while his grip on your hips tightened.
"Fuuuck…Fuck you make it so fucking hard to last" he groaned, pulling out and flipping you back over, you looked up at him with a dazed expression, you mind slowly coming back from your sudden high. You watched as he gripped himself again, about to sink back into you when you stopped him with a whimper, his eyes shooting up to yours, looking for any sign that you were wanting him to stop. He would have to fight the rut if you did, and would probably have to leave. But instead he watched as you reached for his shirt, whining before speaking.
"Off"
"You want me naked?" He smirked.
"It's only fair" you told him, watching as he laughed before quickly discarding his gloves, boots, shirt, chaps, jeans and underwear. You had only seen him without his signature jacket a few times, other than that the only peeks you got were when he and Paul were wrestling and his shirt would ride up, or if he reached for something high. But now, now he was on full display and you couldn't help but stare, you knew Marko looked good but you didn't know he looked that good, suddenly you wondered if you could draw your own vampire romance novel cover, with him as the vampire.
"Better?" He asked sarcastically, but watched as you nodded with a smile, reaching up to pull him down into a kiss, he grinned in the kiss before taking over again. Lining himself up before entering with another quick thrust that had you breaking the kiss to throw your head back. You felt him grab your legs, spreading them wide as he began his fast pace. Your body rocked as you reached for your headboard, trying to stop yourself from moving. You looked down at Marko, finding his eyes trained on where your body connected, jaw slack before he moaned.
"Shit it's like your body doesn't wanna let me go, just keeps sucking me back in, Fuck baby" he groaned, eyes shutting and head falling back as he kept his pace, mouth open as moan after moan left him while he lost himself in the feeling of you. The grip he had on your legs kept getting tighter and you knew he must have been getting close. His claws scratched down your legs, creating more crimson lines as you watched his eyebrows knit together.
"Fuck baby…Fuck…I…" he suddenly let go of your legs, his hands coming up to grab your wrists and pin them above your head.
"Shit" he hissed, eyes still closed as he picked up his speed, your bed squeaking even more in protest.
"You're gonna take it all" he growled, eyes locking with yours and you found yourself getting lost in his golden gaze.
"Right?" He asked, watching as you nodded, mouth open but nothing coming out.
"Words baby" he spoke, leaning down to bury his face against your neck.
"Yes"
"Every last drop?" He laughed at the needy moan you let out, his words shooting you towards a third orgasm, one that was shooting him towards his own. Being so pent up and finally getting to have you, feel your body against his, was catching up to him.
"Marko" you whimpered, legs wrapping tightly around his waist as you felt a new weird feeling in your stomach.
"Gonna, fuck.. Be my good little mate and, fuuuuck….Fuck, take it baby, I know you can, shit" he groaned in your ear, his hands abandoning your wrists to move underneath your back, coming up to grab your shoulders before you felt him push up onto his knees, your lower half resting on his legs. The new angle caused him to hit that spot inside and you couldn't hold in the scream of his name. Your mind was only partially aware of him constantly licking and sucking on your neck at that point, and you knew what he wanted, so without a second thought you leaned your head to the side allowing him more access and hearing him growl before you felt it. The sharp sudden sting of his fangs sinking into your skin. The feeling had your third orgasm rushing over you, far more intense than the others, the strange feeling intensifying until you felt your world becoming fuzzy, and then suddenly black. Marko wasn't much better, as soon as your blood hit his tongue he knew he would be addicted, but pairing that with you letting him bite you while the two of you fucked…As soon as your blood entered his mouth he snapped, his whole body froze before going into overdrive, feeling your body shake in his grip, his lower half suddenly far more wet than normal, but all he could focus on was how sweet your blood was and how good it felt to pour inside you. His lips left your neck and he let his eyes take a moment to come back into focus, body still slowly moving before stilling. Breaths fast before he looked down at you, your eyes closed and breathing quick, he panicked at first, afraid that he had somehow hurt you, before he realized that you had passed out. He couldn't help the shit eating grin that spread across his face at this, at the fact that he fucked you into a black out and the sheer amount of wetness that covered him. He watched as you slowly started coming around, peppering kisses along your face.
"You with me baby?" he laughed, nuzzling your cheek. Listening as you gave a pleased hum, shaky hand slowly coming up to bury itself in his curls.
"Honestly I wasn't sure you would be able to handle me" he chuckled, leaning back to look at your body, red lines littering your skin.
"Should have carved my name" he giggled, tapping the skin over your heart.
"You're a sadist" you groaned with a laugh, voice rough from the screaming.
"Would just be marking what's mine" he shrugged.
"Are all of you like this when you're in rut?" You asked, watching as he shrugged again.
"Honestly I don't know, I'm the first one, we've only been told about it by Max"
"Wait..What do you mean?"
"Why do you think I came here?" He asked with a laugh.
"Honestly I'm not sure…David had warned me to not let you in but"
"But you did anyways, you got a crush on me cutie?" He giggled, teasing you while you simply rolled your eyes.
"Nope totally hate you, that's why we just had sex"
"Best sex of your life huh? Not only did I make you squirt but I made you pass out" he stated, that Cheshire cat grin returning.
"You did not make me-" you started before looking down at the wetness that covered his stomach.
"Oh my God" you quickly covered your face, hot with embarrassment and listening as he laughed.
"No need to hide baby, it was hot as hell, being able to make my mate feel that good" he smiled against your neck before placing soft kisses to the skin.
"You keep calling me that"
"Cause you are" he told you, meeting your gaze when you went quiet, his golden eyes, now less red, meeting yours.
"According to Max, our rut only gets triggered when we find our mate, the one we're supposed to be with..I guess humans would call it a soulmate. That's why none of us have ever been through a rut before"
"So I'm your soulmate?" You asked with a smile.
"My one and only cutie" he told you, leaning down to capture your lips, fangs grazing the flesh before biting gently.
"Would this be the right time to tell you that I've pretty much had a crush on you since we first met?" You giggle, listening as he growled.
"Well then, I think we have some missed time to make up for" he smiled, and suddenly you felt like prey being cornered by a very hungry predator…And you knew you were in for a very long night.

What kind of music do you think each of the Batfam members listen to? (Besides Jason who is obviously a Mitski stan)
OH I LOVE THIS QUESTION!!!!!!! i'm gonna tryyyyy and take this seriously
starting off i think alfred's music taste influences just about everyone in the manor to some degree. lots of classical music flowing through the hallways at most hours of the day, the music reminds everyone of home. i think it's a general rule of thumb in the family that if you want to locate alfred, just follow the sound of mozart.
drawing off a bit of canon, i think dick listens to a lot of popular 80s stuff. the cure, joy division, the b-52s, billy joel, abba etc. that one panel of him humming 'here comes the sun' also comes to mind, i think he'd enjoy the beatles. however i do think he'd also be into some soft rock, maybe just a little bit of more intense stuff too. fleetwood mac's a big one i think he'd like. i've mentioned in a post before how i think dick would enjoy foo fighters in his post-robin rebellion phase, and i stand by that.
i do also enjoy his insane love for david bowie in the live-action titans adaption... very dear to me. i take that as gospel. also have a slight feeling he's a bit of a jazz guy once in a blue moon.
however i don't think he'd be overly into music, (the artists though, that's a whole other thing), i think he's also just happy to flick on the radio to some random dated station... or, don't crucify me... the top hits of the day.
i think jason's taste is a bit more refined. he's the #1 victim of alfred's classical music agenda, sitting in the library he's got something like 'lacrimosa' looping endlessly.
unlike dick who's got a happy-go-lucky approach to music, i think jason feels into it a bit more. he's joyriding through the city and listening to slipknot, sleeping with sirens, misfits etc etc. he's just looking for background music, maybe he's playing dashboard confessional, or... hear me out... lana del rey. he's out on patrol and is playing 90's rap through his helmet's bluetooth.
i think he'd also enjoy amy winehouse, the boys next door, no doubt, alice in chains, and maybe a bit of lorde. he's definitely into more indie bands too, local stuff. makes his own mixtapes and you'd only be able to recognise like 20% of the bands by name. he's also the one batfam member who i think would go to war to defend the songs he feels deeply about.
tim's a bit more difficult to narrow down, but i'll throw 90s alternative out there; jimmy eat world, oasis, radiohead, weezer, pearl jam type stuff. i'm also very set in my ways about femme-pop tim, which is definitely more out there and harder to justify. in terms of that i think beyonce, rihanna, and britney spears are the big three he'd enjoy.
i just think he likes anything with a beat tbh, it's not so much about genre or the actual song, as it is about the mood. similarly to dick, i don't think he's typically meticulous with defining his taste or anything, just happy to listen to whatever's making him feel good.
as for damian, i think anything with soothing instruments entices him. mainly classical, but not just limited to european stuff, i'm thinking of tyagaraja, toru takemitsu etc just off the top of my head. he'd also like elton john, queen, and other older artists with a polished vocal and avantgarde nature. i'm also going to put cartoon soundtrack music into the mix, specifically songs from adventure time. for whatever reason i'm also super drawn into the idea of him being big on kpop, although i don't know enough about the genre to make specific assumptions.
steph (ik she's not exactly batfam but i'm including her anyways) listens to predominantly female artists, and oscillates between very uplifting pop stuff, and.. societal hatred. so i think on one hand she's very into marina and the diamonds, kesha, and olivia rodrigo, but also paramore, hole, fiona apple, lorde etc. in contrast to all of that though she's also a huge fan of the beatles' solo careers, particularly paul mccartney.
cass is into a lot of the music she's done for ballet performances. the music for the snow queen instantly comes to mind as something that would be a favourite of hers. this might be a bit out there, but i think she'd enjoy grimes a lot, mostly because of how enriching it is to just listen to the sounds of, without having to pay much mind to the words she's speaking (grimes never really makes a lot of sense anyways). apart from that i don't think she really listens to all that much music, maybe some 2000s pop she hears on the radio driving around with steph.. i did enjoy the all star gag in batgirls (2022).
babs has a pretty similar taste to steph i think (i believe steph may have gotten some of her taste from her). she's a big fan of stevie nicks, gwen stefani, maybe the cranberries, hole, dolly parton, janet jackson, lauryn hill, and lesley gore. i'd like to say she enjoys a bit of 70s eccentric too, the doors, blondie, bowie etc. i don't think she's overly fussed with what she's listening to, as long as it doesn't sound too watered down and modern-pop like.
and i don't really know enough about duke to make assumptions, so i'm just going to let him sit out of this one. i also don't think bruce has any time for music, except for a bit of classical to help him concentrate every so often.

WARNING MAJOR ANGST AHEAD
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ilysen (ill-e-s-in) has always been considered a powerful squaller. She grew confined within the walls of the little palace, her beautiful cage. So naturally, when she escaped and went to ketterdam for solace (a bad idea on her part, truthfully), nobody expected her to survive it's gruelling streets.
But you know what they say, those who have tasted freedom will not give up that which they have tasted.
Ilysen walked into the barrel— doe eyed with bright light blue hair and the personality of a puppy. Quickly though, the barrel toughened her up— and her blue hair only became the shell of a person she once was. She earned a new name, 'The slyph of ketterdam' A beautiful creature that will manipulate the air at the comand of the smallest bone in her body. She will swipe you off your feet, and knock the air out of your lungs. Ilysen became a force to be reckoned with and she worked for no one. Kaz Brekker took notice of this, He took notice of it all.
He set his wraith on her tail and found out her secrets. Then, he tried asking her nicely to work with him, he tried getting jesper to charm her, he even he got his wraith to befriend her. But she only listened and agreed when he threatened her. When he threated to send her back to the cage she once escaped from.
Cruel, I know. So did she, this was the life she chose and kaz brekker and his antics were slightly respectable but no one would know that last part. Instead they would know the slyph that hated his soul, bones, and questionable fashion choices. They would come to know her as unreliable and the untried, theortical lose string whose loyalties could change at any given moment.
Nobody knew why she worked so closely with the Dregs. Not even the trusted sharpshooter and wraith could get get that out of her. Sometimes, kaz brekker found himself staring at his office wall not quiet knowing the answer himself. But he knew she wouldn't betray her only friends in the barrel. He knew that she only stayed because of inej and jesper. She had no other reason. Right?
One faithful night, when the barrel was as quiet as usual with it's citizens hiding in their houses and criminals lurking in it's shadows, the unofficial crows— atleast half of them, found themselves at the harbour for a deal.
They watched closely as the other party's leader approached kaz, really getting into his personal space hoping it intimidated the bastard infront of him. They watched as Kaz hit him with his trusty cane, And continued as both the bosses succesfully reached an impasse.
Until suddenly, they ran. Down the street and under the harbour's bridges, into the dimly lit caves— they hid. Those idiots had broken their conditions and brought out weapons, gunshots ringing through the harbour as the slyph struggled to save their lives, Kaz couldn't believe he let this slip past. For the first time, he felt stupid. He looked around the dimly lit underground cave as he thought of ways to save the lives of his band of teenage misfits.
Perhaps if he was faster, they would have missed the explosion above their heads. Perhaps then, Ilysen wouldn't have had to use her powers to hold up the ceiling above their head and instead hold open the only exit which was now burried under the rubble. Kaz worked quickly to try find a way out of the underground cave, but something felt wrong.
Ilysen, who would typically be complaining her lungs out right about now, was silent. A still, unmoving, shell of the noisy companion kaz had gotten used to. her hands remained raised up above her head as she held the roof up, scared to move even by an inch. The room was quiet as Kaz searched for a way out while encouraging the others to do the same. Another explosion. Those two-timing bastards were set on bathing in young blood but there was no time to complain now, only escape.
"I don't hate you." the words rung of the walls of the cave and pierced striaght through kaz brekker's heart as he turned around, Ilysen was looking straight at him now. "If we don't make it out of here—" She said as a shaky breath escaped her lips "—I just need you to know that I don't hate you."
A ringing explosion was the only sound that broke the silence between them.
"We're not dying today." He said, certain that if he couldn't save them, the fates would protect them all because she didn't deserve to die yet. She looked away as she struggled to hold up the ceiling distracting herself from the growing weakness in her arms and her chest. She knew what she had to do. But would she? "Ilysen, look at me." Kaz urged, hating himself for not being able to physically comfort her. She obliged.
"We're not dying today." He said as confidently as he could. His voice wavered somewhere, but he knew if anyone noticed it would only be her. He continued ignoring the pang of guilt in his chest, promising things he wasn't sure of. "I promise you."
Ilysen nodded, She would do anything for them. With steadying breaths she changed the directions of her arms.
In one swift movement, she raised the previously blocked entrance and pushed the crows outside, saving their lives. Unfortunately for her, the ceiling she once held up came crashing down. Only the saints could do something now.
Jesper, Inej, And Kaz stood still. The realisation of what unfolded weighing onto them heavier than the deafening silence of the vast ocean behind them.
They searched the rubble for her all night, not scared of what they might find. Kaz called in all the dregs as they lifted up large rocks in silence, secretly praying for the survival of their slyph. They found her body at the crack of dawn, A single ray lighting up her almost still body. Almost. She laid on the floor, a doll— but there was a faint rise and fall of her chest. There was hope for her survival. Kaz would never admit it but he owed her his life.
Even if she happened to remain in this unconcious state for the rest of her life, kaz would take care of her. He would never admit it, but he was grateful for her. And maybe one day, He could tell her that.

🐉 anon here! I hope you're doing alright! I hope these request won't be too much! Would it be okay if you wrote about Shinobu with a s/o, she/her, who has that dragon tattoo? Possibly a criminal syndicate but wants to leave her family because of how bad they have gotten! The family found her at a younge age and took her in, becoming the imitating woman she is. But what her boss asks of her is too much and not what she wants to do. So she tries to leave and stagger away from the family, meeting Shinobu in the process! She would be seen as a monster, but she really does have a good heart. Maybe even a slow burn with Shinobu? Those are my favorites! While she stays or keeps meeting Shinobu, the family finds her and roughs her up, she kicks thier ass but ends up being taking down. The boss would come in and try to cut her pinkie off, but Shinobu comes in being the badass queen that she is and deals with him herself, and saves her s/o, with a happy ending! Again, I hope this isn't too much to ask! I love your work!
What Is Right
Shinobu Kochou x She/Her Reader
A/N: Here you go, sorry it took so long! I hope it’s alright, I am having trouble with the December requests that are left. 😫 Word Count: 5,640
“Aniki, are you sure about this? Is there really no other way?”
“Of course not,” Akira scrutinized his adopted younger sister, put off by her reluctance, “That cowardly man’s betrayal killed my father, our father.” He hissed, crushing the remains of his cigarette in his hand, ignoring the burn.
“Then, if it’s absolutely necessary, shouldn’t it just be him who has to pay?” (Y/n) risked speaking out against him yet again, “Why kill his family, but leave him be?”
“It sends a message!” Akira shouted, “He’ll know not to fuck with us again. He’ll be forced to confront what he took from me, us. Don’t you understand, (Y/n)? That’s why I’m telling you this.” He grasped her shoulder a little to tightly to be friendly or comforting. “I’m trusting you to bring honor back to this family. That dragon tattoo on your back isn’t just for show, its supposed to mean something. It’s what unites all of us. Otosan loved you like you were his own flesh and blood. If you want this band of misfits, your family, to continue to have a legacy, you will do this.”
“But, they’re only little kids. Not even his wife knows the shady shit he’s dealing in. And it’s not just that… we’ve been pushing away our allies with the decisions you’ve been making in Otosan’s stead—“
“Do you think this is easy?!” Akira shouted again, getting in (Y/n)’s face, she stayed remarkably calm despite this, “I was chosen to make the choices that no one else has the guts to make! This is what has to be done!”
“I just can’t do it, Aniki.” (Y/n) shook her head, “It’s more than and eye for an eye to me. I think you’re asking for too much.”
“You either do this, or you will be marked as a scourge on this family. The family that gave you everything when you had nothing. You think you repaid us for that debt yet?” He asked coldly.
“I doubt I ever could.” (Y/n) murmured, focusing on her breathing to keep a calm appearance, “I’ll… prepare then.”
Akira searched her eyes for a long moment before straightening up again, “Good. Go on, then. I expect results. You have a week.”
“Very well.” (Y/n) bowed before the young man who had used to be so carefree, then got up and took her leave.
***
It had been a couple days since (Y/n) had that meeting with Akira, and she had yet to carry out her mission. She had shadowed the happily unaware family in that time, and it only made the reality of what she had to do even harder.
She was running out of time, only a few more days before her once beloved Aniki would call her back and put her through god knows what for disobeying him. So she decided to do what any decent person tasked with killing a burgeoning family would do, and got wasted. If she couldn’t do it sober, perhaps she could do it drunk.
But of course that plan went south quickly. Instead of gearing herself up for a bloodbath she was drunkenly sobbing in the izakaya. She had never had to kill anyone before, hustle and intimidate, rough-up, sure, but never with the intent to irreversibly maim or kill. The very public moral dilemma (Y/n) was having was finally brought outside when the owner of the establishment cut her off and sent on her way, leaving her to drunkenly stumble down the road alone.
She barely knew where she was, but that didn’t stop her from picking a direction and lumbering away. She didn’t really care where she’d end up. She wasn’t going to be welcomed back to the family unless she had carried out her job, and she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. She knew she’d never be able to go through with it.
“What am I supposed to do?”
Her foot rolled over a pebble as she said this and unable to correct herself, she fell sideways, half in the path, half in the woods. Instead of attempting to get up, she just laid there. Not long after her tumble, she heard the crunch of gravel from the main path, the sound eventually coming to a stop right where she had fallen.
“Oh dear, have we had a little too much to drink tonight?”
(Y/n) managed to sit up on her elbows a bit so she could peer back into the path and her breath caught in her throat. Standing over her was a downright ethereal woman. Oh no, had she hit her head on a jagged rock on the way down? Had she died? Well, that put an end to one dilemma at least.
“Woah,” She said, oh so eloquently, “beautiful.”
“Oh my, thank you.” She chuckled, causing (Y/n)’s heart to stutter. “Here, give me your hands, let me help you up.”
(Y/n) didn’t need to be asked twice, she took hold of the strangers hands, a little more calloused than she would have imagined, and clumsily rose to her feet, almost falling back down a few times in the process.
“You can hardly even stand up. We had better get you home so you can sleep this off. I hope you will have learned your lesson about such heavy drinking when you wake up with a hangover tomorrow.”
Home… (Y/n) sobered just a bit.
“I, I can’t go home!” (Y/n)’s shoulders drooped and the buzz she had going fell flat, “I have no home to go back to anymore.”
The woman gave her a sympathetic look then seemed to be contemplating something before finally speaking again.
“Then I suppose you can stay with me for the night. It’s too dangerous to be out alone at night sober, much less drunk.”
“Nah, it’s fine. Don’t worry about me, I’ll manage.”
“Don’t be difficult,” the woman sighed, “either walk with me, or I’ll drag you along. Your choice.”
(Y/n) laughed half-heartedly. “The way my feet keep tripping up you’ll probably have to drag me anyway.”
“I can see that.” She smirked, putting one of (Y/n)’s arms over her shoulders to help her keep her balance.
“My name is (Y/n) by the way.”
“And mine is Shinobu.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Shinobu.”
Shinobu hummed, but did not outwardly share the sentiment and somewhere in (Y/n)’s drunk brain she had the sense to be a bit embarrassed. What a wonderful first impression she had made, laying on the side of the road, drunk off her ass.
“I swear this is not normal behavior for me, you just caught me at a really bad time.”
“I’m not judging you, we all deal with grief in our own ways.” Shinobu told her.
“Grief?”
“Based on the puffiness around your eyes and the way the moon catches on your cheeks, how sore your voice sounds, you have been crying a lot, haven’t you?” She clinically deduced.
Grief… that would be an apt way to describe what (Y/n) had been feeling since her adoptive father had been killed, since everything she thought she knew about her family had crumbled in his absence. How Akira was spiraling in the name of revenge. How heavy and constricting the ink engraved upon her back felt as the days dragged on. How quickly things had changed.
Shinobu led her to an incredible mansion that she couldn’t help but gawk at. The inside was just as impressive. She had half the mind to ask Shinobu if she was a noblewoman, but by the time she had recovered enough to ask, she had already been led to a guest room.
“Drink this water and then rest. I will see you in the morning.”
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” Shinobu gave a short nod and smiled before closing the door.
(Y/n) staggered into the cot and fell into a sleep like death mere moments later.
***
The next morning, almost afternoon, actually, (Y/n) awoke with a brain splitting pain. She could hear whispering around her, but they might as well have been screaming. She groaned pitifully and weakly attempted to shield her eyes from the sun.
“Oh! She’s waking up.”
“Is Shinobu-sama’s medicine ready?”
“I have it right here. Excuse me… Can you sit up please? We have medicine for your headache.”
(Y/n) grunted, slowly sitting up and then putting her head in her hands. Her head was swimming and she immediately wanted to lay back down, but a cup of sludgy looking medicine was soon put under her nose.
“Make sure to drink it all.”
“The smell may be off-putting, but it works really well.”
“Once you get some food and water in you, you’ll feel a lot better.”
Beyond the smelly hangover cure, (Y/n) could smell something good enough to make her mouth water. With great resolve, she downed the medicine and suppressed a gag, finally looking up at the three young girls working around her.
“Thanks,” she sighed, “sorry, I’m normally not such a mess.”
“Shinobu-sama said you were going through a difficult time. We aren’t judging.” The girl with pink butterfly clips promised.
“Here,” the girl with pigtails offered her a generous tray of food, “eat up.”
“You’ll feel better in no time.” The girl with braided hair smiled.
“Thank you all so much, really. This is fantastic.” (Y/n) said between bites.
“We will be sure to let Aoi-san know you enjoyed her cooking.” The girls beamed.
As (Y/n) ate, she chatted with the girls, learning all about the Butterfly Estate and all of its inhabitants. She also learned about the mansion’s purpose, to provide shelter and care to the injured. After her meal had settled, (Y/n) felt almost normal. There was still a bit of a dull throbbing in her skull every once in awhile, but given how much she drank the night before, it was amazing how much good that medicine did for her. She didn’t want to go back to her reality. She wished she didn’t have to leave this oasis.
“So, where is Shinobu now? I wanted to thank her before I left.” (Y/n) asked once she helped the girls clean and prepare the room for any new guests that may need it.
“Oh, she had something come up earlier this morning so she couldn’t come by to check on you herself.” Kiyo explained.
“She probably won’t be back until much later in the evening.” Sumi nodded.
“But we will make sure to let her know when she comes back.” Naho promised.
(Y/n)’s shoulders slumped slightly with disappointment. She had made such a poor first impression, she was hoping to end on a good note at least. There was also the fact that every moment (Y/n) was here, was another moment away from facing her reality. Maybe she could stall just a little bit longer.
“I’d really like to tell her myself… ah! What if I helped you guys with your work until she gets back? Would that be alright? Then I could really show my gratitude to you all.”
The girls gave it a little thought, but saw no harm in getting a little extra help for the day, so they happily agreed. (Y/n) spent the rest of the day sweeping, dusting and washing bedding. She was a little clumsy, and bit too rough and almost ripped the sheets she was scrubbing, but she got the hang of it. It was a lot different from the work her adoptive father would give her.
As she worked, she found out there was more to this infirmary than met the eye. She learned about demon slayers and was fascinated by their cause. It all seemed so noble to her, risking their lives to save unaware people like her from demons who roamed the night. She owed Shinobu more than she knew for last night.
When Shinobu came home around dinner time, she was surprised to see her guest was still there and even more surprised when said guest fell to her knees before her, thanking her so thoroughly for her good deed. Stunned, she blinked slowly then worked her mildly surprised expression back into a kind, yet reserved smile.
“Oh my, you are much more chipper than you were last night. Thank you very much, but please stand, there is no need for any of that.”
(Y/n) stood, but let it be known how much Shinobu deserved every second of praise and appreciation. She bowed again, but only at the waist. It was at that point the younger girls decided to chime in, telling Shinobu about all the tasks (Y/n) had helped them with during the day, so of course Shinobu offered to let her stay for dinner as well, and since the sky was darkening, she invited her to stay another night. Before they knew it, an extra night became two, then three, then—
(Y/n) was running out of time. Her week was almost up, just one more day. She had a decision to make, and she wasn’t sure why it had taken her so long to get to this point, as there was only one correct course of action.
Early that morning, she leapt out of bed to make the treck back to the city. She would come back, of course. She promised Shinobu she would fix all of the clunky sliding doors around the mansion today. She silently thanked the stars for the millionth time that she crossed paths, er, fell into the path of such an extraordinary woman. She was going to follow Shinobu’s example and live a life she could be proud of, a life her adoptive father would have been proud of.
“You’re up early.”
(Y/n) nearly jumped out of her skin when she heard Shinobu call to her from the engawa, a cup of tea in hand.
“When I told you the doors could wait until the morning, I didn’t mean dawn.” She teased.
“Ah, right, but I’m actually heading to the city. I have some affairs to get in order, but I promise I’ll take care of those doors as soon as I get back.”
“Is that so? Well then, safe travels. Be back before nightfall and stay away from any alcohol while you’re out.”
“I’m telling you that was a one time thing!” (Y/n) said in an exasperated tone.
Shinobu chuckled and (Y/n) smiled despite the jab.
“I’ll be back later in the afternoon, try not to work too hard!” (Y/n) sent Shinobu a wave, then bounded off of the engawa and left the estate grounds.
When she made it to the city, she kept a low profile, staking out a certain home as she had earlier in the week. At this time, the man who had killed her adoptive father with his cowardice and big mouth was busy at his day job while his wife took care of the children at home.
She took a deep breath, and knocked on the door. When the wife answered, (Y/n) asked to come inside and explained all that her shady husband had been up to and why it was important for her to take her kids and leave the city as soon as possible.
(Y/n) expected to have to persuade the woman further, force her out the door if necessary, but it seemed she already had her suspicions about her husband’s strange behavior. Hearing gossip about people seeing him in the Red Light District, and him claiming they had barely enough money to make ends meet despite the large amount of money she had found hidden away in the back of one of his drawers. She had been waiting for answers before doing anything rash, but (Y/n) provided her the last bit of incentive she needed to skip town with her kids and take her unfaithful husband’s money with her. Her parents still lived in a little known mountain village a couple weeks journey from the city, they would go there.
(Y/n) helped the woman and her children pack up their most precious belongings and got them a ride that would take them to the city limits where a carriage would be awaiting them next. When (Y/n) saw their car disappear around the corner, she left the crowded city herself, finally allowing herself to really breathe for the first time all week. There was no turning back, but that was fine. She felt so much lighter.
She couldn’t risk showing her face around town any more than she already had today. It wouldn’t take long before her betrayal was discovered and Akira would send the clan after her. What her punishment would be, she was not sure. However, under Akira’s harsh leadership, she was sure it would not be pleasant.
She stomped down the anxiety fluttering within her. She was on a better path now. No more shady shit, she wanted to put her strength to good use. She was going to ask Shinobu about becoming a demon slayer once she returned to the mansion. When she got back and took care of the doors like she promised she would, she did just that and asked Shinobu about becoming a demon slayer. Shinobu didn’t seem surprised by (Y/n)’s interest, but she did try to dissuade her from taking that path. However, with passion and persistence, she did finally manage to get Shinobu to give in and introduce her to a cultivator.
“But… I thought you were going to teach me.” (Y/n) had sheepishly admitted when Shinobu dropped her off on the first day.
“To start all the way at the beginning with the fundamentals of proper swordsmanship and Water Breathing would be… how can I say this kindly… tedious and not worth my time.” She answered with a mischievous smile.
“That didn’t sound kind at all!”
“I’ll tell you what, you do well, and I’ll give you a supplemental lesson here and there.”
“I’ll hold you to it!”
And in the next few months, (Y/n) learned a lot. When the time for the next Final Selection came around, she would be well prepared. Between what the Water Breathing cultivator taught her and what Shinobu refined with her own expertise, she felt confident in what she could accomplish. Maybe a little too confident.
“Can I come with you this time?” (Y/n) asked hopefully as Shinobu packed a light bag of supplies for her mission.
“I will tell you what I always have. You haven’t passed Final Selection yet. It would be unwise to bring you along.” Shinobu said, snapping her small medical kit shut. “I mean no offense when I say this, but I don’t want to have to worry about you while I have to focus on doing my job.”
“Please?”
Shinobu gave (Y/n) a smile that was paired with a look she knew all too well at this point. The ‘I’ll leave you in charge of all the most annoying chores while I’m gone if you keep this up’ look. (Y/n) pouted.
“I don’t get it! Why can’t we have supervised missions? Don’t you think it’s a little extreme to go from training without seeing a single demon, to a several nights of fighting them alone in the woods? I trust that everyone is doing their best to prepare me, but it would still be helpful to see what I’ll be up against in the future.”
Shinobu considered this as she checked over the experiments scattered around her lab one last time. It was a fair point. People tended to either go in with too much confidence or went in terrified over what to expect. Many fledglings had been killed by getting stuck in their heads and forgetting all they had been taught.
She would hate for (Y/n) to meet the same fate.
“Very well,” she sighed, “you may come, but,” she pointed her finger towards (Y/n) in warning, “you are only to observe from a distance. Do not attempt to engage unless absolutely necessary. If you go against me, I will make sure that you will never be cleared for final selection. Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes! I’ll be on my best behavior, I promise!” (Y/n) eagerly held out her pinky and Shinobu sighed again inwardly before hooking their pinkies together.
Hopefully she wouldn’t regret this decision. It was getting harder and harder for her to deny (Y/n) anything. Despite the undesirable first impression and how rough she appeared around the edges, (Y/n) was a true sweetheart. She had a very abrupt introduction to the mansion, but quickly became another familiar friendly face within its walls. It would be devastating to see her life cut short.
“So, where are we going?” (Y/n) grinned excitedly and Shinobu couldn’t help but smile as well.
“A village to the southeast.”
***
Everything had gone smoothly until it hadn’t.
Shinobu had left a small trail of poisoned demons in her wake, (Y/n) safely observing and cheering her on at a distance, until two other demons had snuck up on them both. While Shinobu was busy taking care of one demon, (Y/n) had to defend herself against the other. Shinobu had lent her a Nichirin Sword for just such an occasion, but (Y/n) was having a hard time reading the demon’s erratic movements and had been slashed half a dozen times across her arms, legs and back before she finally managed to behead the thing. It hadn’t been very clean, but she gave a triumphant, albeit breathless shout of victory.
She had then turned to Shinobu, excited to she her reaction to her hard fought kill, but that fire died immediately when she saw how angry Shinobu looked as she strode towards her, the last demon melting into a pile of goo behind her.
Instantly (Y/n) felt the need to be defensive. “You- you said I could defend myself if I absolutely had to! Everything’s fine, right?”
“Everything is not fine!” Shinobu dropped to her knees beside her and opened her medkit, “You are covered in wounds! If you had a uniform, you wouldn’t be hurt half as badly. You might even get an infection on top of all of this. I shouldn’t have let you come.”
“Hey, none of this is your fault. That demon scratched me all up, not you.“
“You wouldn’t have gotten hurt, if I had left you at home.” She restated stubbornly. “Now show me your wounds, the sooner I clean and wrap them, the sooner we can get home so I can give you proper aid.”
(Y/n) let Shinobu clean and wrap her calves and arms, but when Shinobu began peeling back her clothes to try to work on her back, (Y/n) froze.
She had been rather vague with Shinobu about her past. How could she tell Shinobu she had been raised in a criminal syndicate that took a turn from admittedly kind of in a grey area, to definitely irreprehensible? That the night Shinobu met her, she was trying to gear herself up to kill an innocent woman and her children? No, she couldn’t. She could only imagine the disgust Shinobu would feel, the betrayal. (Y/n) suddenly felt ill.
“What is it, what’s wrong?” Shinobu asked. She tried to peel (Y/n)’s clothes from her back quicker, worried she was having some kind of reaction to the demon’s attack.
(Y/n) tried to pull her clothes back up over her shoulders, but Shinobu was faster, a quiet gasp that felt deafening in (Y/n)’s ears left Shinobu’s lips as the spiraling dragon tattoo was revealed. The blood seeping from the gashes across (Y/n)’s back making it look even more ferocious.
“When did you get this done?” Shinobu lightly poked her shoulder blade, the dragon’s snoot.
“A few years ago.” (Y/n) mumbled, pressing her palms together.
“Why haven’t you told me about this before?”
A weak hum and a shrug of the shoulders.
“You know,” Shinobu traced the coils, making (Y/n) shiver, “I have heard about a group of criminals that bear similar tattoos…”
(Y/n) broke down and told Shinobu everything about her up-brining from when her parents had gone out on a routine fishing trip and didn’t come back, up until the night they met, now months in the past.
“I understand if you don’t want me around anymore. I’ll—ah!”
Apparently Shinobu had been treating her back throughout her tale, as made evident by the sudden tightness of the bandages around her torso.
“That’s just foolish. Do you think I’m afraid of a little ink? Do you think I would ever be afraid of you, (Y/n)? Let’s think logically here.”
Shinobu proceeded to verbally beat some sense into (Y/n)’s brain. Reminding her of all the good she had done in the last few months.
“There is no better place for you than the Butterfly Estate. It’s a much better fit. Isn’t that right?”
Before (Y/n) could collect herself enough to respond, she felt Shinobu pinch her skin lower on her shoulder blade.
“Yes, you are so very wise Shinobu.”
“Why thank you.“
(Y/n) blinked, turmoil somewhat pushed aside for the moment. “Are you… pinching my skin to make it look like my tattoo is talking?”
“I’ve patched you up as best I can here. Get dressed, it’s time to go home.”
“Hey, don’t ignore me!” (Y/n) fumbled with her clothes then stumbled to her feet to catch up with Shinobu.
It was a little awkward on (Y/n)’s part as they walked back to the mansion, but once the fact that Shinobu still liked her caught up to her, the conversation became more natural and by the time they returned to the mansion and Shinobu completed the finishing touches to (Y/n)’s care, (Y/n) felt a familiar weightlessness and with Shinobu’s teasing pokes, the tattoo on her back didn’t feel as heavy and constricting anymore.
***
In the following weeks of recovery, (Y/n) and Shinobu grew quite a bit closer and many residents of the mansion took notice. The touches that were a couple beats too long when they passed the other something, the lingering looks, and most damning was how Shinobu would put off some of her work to join (Y/n) for a meal or a chat and a walk around the garden, knuckles brushing as they went. (Y/n) couldn’t help but feel hopeful that Shinobu might want to change the nature of their relationship as well.
On this lovely summer day, she was prepared to share her feelings, for better or for worse. She had already planned a little outing that Shinobu agreed to join her on. Nothing too grand, just a sweet little picnic in the woods near the mansion. It was pretty much a date already. She had woken extra early that morning with the intent of getting everything in order before they left, but when she walked past her window, something on the sill outside caught her eye. A letter.
She opened the window and took the letter and wasted no time in opening it. The curiosity she had felt chilled into a heavy feeling of dread.
Traitorous coward, the letter read, If you have any ounce of honor within you, you will come to the cemetery and accept your punishment for deserting the family, or we will burn this mansion and everyone in it to ash.
There was no sign off, but (Y/n) didn’t need one to know it was Akira. She let the letter flutter to the ground and jumped out of the window so as not to be caught running down the halls. This was her mess to deal with. She would not allow anyone to be hurt because of her.
Part of her was hopeful she and Akira could talk it out, but she knew that wasn’t going to be very likely. Whatever happened today would be the final wedge between them.
She went to the cemetery and walked to the very last row. Though it was not specified, she had a feeling she’d find him near his father’s grave.
“There you are.” Though she expected it, (Y/n) stiffened at Akira’s icy tone. “Look who left her comfy new castle to finally face the consequences.”
“Aniki—“
“No, you are no sibling of mine. Not by blood nor bond.” Akira sneered, “I trusted you to do the right thing for this family. You’d think after taking you in, you’d have a sense of duty to avenge the man who took you off the streets and put food in your mouth.”
(Y/n) stood a bit taller, holding her head high, “I don’t regret letting them go. They did nothing wrong. I heard all about how you got your man in the end. That was all that needed to be done. It’s over.”
“Not until they’re all dead.” He growled, then sighed. “Here is how this is going to work. You tell me where they ran off to, or you will pay dearly.”
“I won’t tell you anything.” She declared almost talking over him with how quickly she replied.
“Oh, trust me,” he glared, “you will.”
People (Y/n) once considered family and friends had quietly surrounded them as they talked. And now were charging at her with the intent to harm. She managed to hold them off for a time, even incapacitated some after all the training she had done to become a demon slayer thus far, but between being outnumbered and her wounds still relatively fresh, she was beaten to the ground and held there at knifepoint barely able to breathe with the combined weight on top of her back.
“Start with the fingers.” Akira ordered cooly. “If she manages to hold out, we’ll move on to the toes. But before all of this is done we also have to take that tattoo back as well. Try to be as delicate as possible. I want to dry it out and hang it on my wall. My father always said it was one of his favorite works.”
“Stop!” (Y/n) squirmed beneath the weight, struggling to pry her wrist out of one of the many grabby hands. She closed her eyes and grit her teeth tightly, anticipating the first slice, but then she felt some of the weight get yanked away and her eyes shot open, craning her head back, she was surprised to see that the Calvary had arrived.
Inosuke cackled and crowed as he swiftly kicked outward like a hurricane, Kanao weaved behind thugs and struck them in their weak points, toppling them. Tanjirou delivered a few swift headbutts and even Zenitsu, though screaming, came through as well. Last but not least, Shinobu floated gracefully to the ground behind (Y/n), her smile too sharp and her eyes to dark to be considered kind. Her gaze was trained on Akira, challenging him.
“My home is filled with an array of trained fighters at all hours of the day, and our allies are many. You had best cut your loses and move on with your miserable life.”
Akira ground his teeth together and his eyes flickered all around him to see just how overpowered he was despite how small the opposing group was in comparison. He determined his clan was no match and called back his gang to retreat, but not before giving (Y/n) one last hateful glare.
While Inosuke cheered and cackled wildly around them, Shinobu dropped to the ground beside (Y/n) to check her over.
“Are you okay? Did they hurt you? Show me.”
“I’m alright, you guys got here just in time. How did you know where to find me?”
“I believe we had a date planned for today.” Shinobu reminded with just the tiniest hint of attitude. “I went to your room, saw the letter on the floor and rallied the troops. If something like this ever happens again, you better tell me instead of running off by yourself. We are stronger together.”
Now, Shinobu had a lot to say just then, but (Y/n) was still fixated on the first line. A date. She saw the outing to ask if she wanted to date as a date in and of itself!
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Shinobu asked, tilting (Y/n)’s head in her hands, “Are you concussed?”
“No! I mean, I don’t think I am, I just, you just—“
“Yes?” Shinobu coaxed with just a touch of impatience. If there was something wrong, she wanted to know about it as soon as possible.
“You-me-we-us— date?!”
Shinobu laughed, it was a little more unrestrained than her usual chuckles and it made (Y/n)’s heart palpitate.
“Yes, is that not what this outings was supposed to be?”
“Well,” she flustered, “technically no. It was supposed to be like a pre-date to ask if you would like to date… it sounds kinda silly when I say it out loud but—“
Shinobu then sighed and rested her forehead against (Y/n)’s. “I think it’s cute. But we can just start dating now. I think we’ve beaten around the bush for long enough.”
“Y-yeah? Okay.” A smile spread across (Y/n)’s face. “Awesome.”
Shinobu took (Y/n)’s hands in her own and placed a quick kiss on her cheek before helping her to her feet.
“Why are you stumbling around like you’re drunk?” Shinobu asked, finding it difficult to keep (Y/n) upright. “Perhaps I should check your pupils again.”
“No, no, I’m good! Great, even! A goddess just kissed my cheek!” (Y/n) beamed, hooking her arms around Shinobu’s shoulders.
“Don’t make me change my mind.” Shinobu warned, a light blush dusting her cheeks.
On the tail end of the sweetness of the moment, Inosuke butted between them to tell Shinobu how hungry he was despite Tanjirou, Kanao and Zenitsu’s best efforts to keep him back. Shinobu chuckled and nodded in understanding. They all marched back to the mansion and enjoyed a hearty breakfast together with the rest of the Butterfly girls, (Y/n) and Shinobu sitting hip to hip during the whole lively affair.

Interview from Upset Magazine 6/2023
Tumblr media
Words: Steven Loftin
Like an apparition manifesting within a dense fog, it was through radio static that Swedish rockers Ghost were formed. In the kindergarten he attended as a young boy, Tobias Forge found himself enamoured with the music crackling through the little toy speakers. From this point forward, he began picking apart the notes and melodies - his journey toward the lore and canon coming into focus as he sat, trying to figure out how this black magic could be summoned.
While it would be many years before he would don his garb as Papa Emeritus, the essence of what his future would sound like was being set through his exposure to a wide variety of music. If any proof were needed, just look to the impressive list of covers Ghost have put their ghastly mark upon, including 2016's 'Popestar' EP, which included the band's takes on Echo & The Bunnymen ('Nocturnal Me') and Simian Mobile Disco ('I Believe').
Ghost's latest EP is another covers bonanza. A five-piece offering of Tobias's backstory, 'Phantomime' plays out like a Greatest Hits radio playlist - a fitting throwback to Tobias' first dalliances with music. Of course, when a group more aligned to the metal/hard rock community bust out covers, including Genesis and Tina Turner, eyebrows are raised. To this reaction, Tobias scoffs. "In 1991, Genesis was one of the biggest bands on the planet! That was a huge hit. In the mid-80s, when I had an older teenage brother who rented every VHS movie that came out, of course, we saw the fucking Thunderdome, and that was a huge hit, and it's still being played on Swedish radio. It's an evergreen; it's not an eclectic choice at all," he declares. "I grew up listening to Stranglers because my brother liked them. What else do we have, Iron Maiden - I mean, are you kidding? I'm a metalhead!"
Originally conceived during the sessions for their fifth album, last year's 'Impera', there were two folders on his computer's desktop: one named 'Impera', the other simply 'Covers'. As the ideas for 'Impera' grew, Tobias would enter his usual routine of working on a cover or two. "At any point, when you lose a little wind in writing your own things, it's quite nice to say, 'Today let's go in and work on the covers'; you can choose anything you want, you can work on absolutely anything you want. And you don't have to finish it, you don't have to release it, you don't have to do anything, but just continue working."
He likens it to the freedom of being a theatre owner who, instead of trying to pen the next greatest Broadway phenomenon, opts to have a go at something already timeless and perfected.
"Maybe you're like, 'Okay, so this fall we're just going to do a reinterpretation of Hamlet instead, that's going to be fine, and that keeps everyone working, and that keeps a project moving along! And I find a similar thing with working on covers. So as I was writing "Impera', the covers folder was also growing exponentially and at a point. I had this idea that was going to be a full-length album."
With COVID restrictions meaning the original producer for 'Impera' was stuck in the US, Tobias had to source a replacement. It would be Klas Åhlund who stepped up to the plate. But, on one condition. "He was pretty upfront. He was like. Yeah, I only want to make the record; I don't want to work on covers," Tobias remembers "Fine, fine, fine, that's fine." he shrugs. "So, after the 'Impera' recording was done, I felt as if making a completely different, whole record again: I didn't have time for that. I didn't have the energy for that. But once I trimmed down the number of songs to only these five to make a very rocky record, it loosened up the screws a little bit for me in terms of like, "Okay, so now I know what the EP is going to be - it's going to be a full, full-throttle rock one."
Ditching some rumoured softer covers, including U2, Misfits, and Motörhead. 'Phantomime is instead a delectable slice of Ghost doing what Ghost do best: creating theatrically big rock. It's Tobias's mark upon some bonafide classics, including Iron Maiden's 'Phantom of the Opera' which feels as befitting to Ghost as it does seeing Papa Emeritus kick the bucket ready for his next iteration. While the focus was on creating this small dose of Tobias's musical DNA, it also served another purpose; to simply be "not very complicated." The project began with the mindset of "we can make this recording loosely - quick but stress-free - as opposed to making a record which is your hard fifth record that needs to live up to certain standards. So it was just a very inspired, very simple recording, actually."
After the complexities of 'Impera' which wound up requiring two studios simultaneously running in parallel "to be able to work efficiently" - Ghost was morphing into a taxing experience for the band leader, "It was just a bigger thing [and] way more stressful."
Deciding to strip that covers folder down to the five tracks, by all accounts, 'Phantomime was a measured and reserved effort. "It ended up being me, an engineer, and an occasional musician coming in and doing something. It was so much looser, so much more mentally Feng Shui," he smiles, relief glowing in his voice. "And I think that that reflected a little bit on the two different records. They're meant to be related - they are definitely related - they were made roughly in the same time, but they're completely different things."
'Phantomime' plays out like a ghoulish social commentary. Starting with a searing rendition of Televison's 'See No Evil, the journey traverses the scourge of Televangelism (Genesis' Jesus He Knows Me') with a delightfully-fitting NSFW video, the instant gratification humans require to feel (The Stranglers' Hanging Around"); the pull back into cruel reality (Phantom Of The Opera"), and the resulting undying hope from a degraded society (Tina Turner's 'We Don't Need Another Hero"). Each offering is bolstered with Ghost's dramatic, theatric rock licks and Tobias's powerhouse vocals.
With 'Phantomime' in the bag and the European leg of the 'Impera' tour imminent (Tobias is currently holed up in preparation), the idea of reflecting on how he came to go from a young boy listening to the static sounds of pop hits on the radio to orchestrating not only a feverishly adored band and its lore but finding the capacity to embrace his inner music nerd, couldn't be more timely. Tobias's relationship with music has always been one of intrigue. He's a pop songwriter with the ambition and ideas of a stadium rock band, which, in essence, explains perfectly why Ghost can sit in a unique, exponentially growing and expanding space.
"My earliest inclination of wanting to transform into something else was definitely Twisted Sister," he recalls. "You know, "I Want To Rock' and 'We're Not Going To Take It' - that was a huge record in 1984, and in 1984, I was three years old," he says. "My brother was 16, so everything that was going on pop-culturally amongst teenagers was happening in my home."
It was thanks to his brother that much of Tobias's relationship with music was formed. He's introduced him to various giants of the time, like tectonic plates being pushed around, impacting and shaping his musical landscape. Translating for young Tobias the attitude of punk at the time, as well as everything else that was 'in', he remembers, "When I was a kid, and he was supposed to babysit me, as a pacifier he would put me in front of [Sex Pistols mockumentary film] 'The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle"," he laughs. "And then when that was over, he would just switch to [X-rated cartoon] Fritz the Cat. And I loved that stuff, of course. That was as much [about] the expression and the attitude. Of course, I loved the songs, but it was also filtered or combined with big songs for me." Those big songs ("Men At Work 'Down Under'," he initially cites, "those sort of songs still have a unique place in my in my writing") would eventually entwine with his darker side that he'd explore as he grew older. "Whilst my whole adolescence was completely in the name of extreme metal, I always had a very soft spot for Top 40 rock and pop radio always," Tobias explains. "And I've listened to that all my life. So it's almost equal portions of Venom as it is anything. that was on the radio."
Also, witnessing shock and glam-rock bands explode intrigued Tobias. He became swept away in the idea that not only could you push a boundary to its absolute limits with convictions and over-the-top grandiosity, but you could do so with songs that quantifiably bop. But, as time has gone onto prove, it wasn't pop music that enamoured Tobias enough that he wanted to become a pop star. It's the mythology and mystery that has become his calling card.
Tobias remained an enigma under the disguise of an evolving form of the iconic Papa Emeritus (now in his fourth incarnation) until 2017, after a lawsuit from a previous iteration of his backing band's rotating cast, the Nameless Ghouls. Visual and video components to releases are often hoovered up by the fandom, stripped apart for meaning and potential. Instagram posts are referred to as a '[Message From The Clergy]" (a phrase later claimed for 2022's Best Of playlist), and lest it is forgotten, the Ghost 'Grucifix' - the prominent crucifix deconstructed into Tobias's gothic 'G' logo - which ties together the vision, religious imagery and satire that would become a core part of the Ghost experience.
His musical ambition and education colliding in the middle of his Venn diagram between dark metal and pop magic is thanks to the likes of the aforementioned Twisted Sister and W.A.S.P., as well as his teen years in the black metal community. "Their first record was also a huge impact in Swedish media," Tobias remembers. "There was this big sort of Satanic panic thing going on at the time in the fall of 1984. Where you had essentially all those things happening. You had Mötley Crüe 'Shout At The Devil', which came out a year earlier, and they were there because they toured with Iron Maiden in 1984, so there was a lot of focus on these shock-rock bands. I saw that as a kid, and I was immediately blown away - it was the coolest thing I've ever seen. And I think that that was the trigger that made me identify as that is how I want to express myself."
Decoding the songs he'd hear also became an integral part of that expression. "That was the only thing I did for years before I started writing my own songs." Recalling his time in kindergarten, they had a piano and guitar, which Tobias became infatuated with. Instead of playing with the other children, he would find himself enraptured, listening to the radio or flipping over whichever cassette happened to be loaded at the time. He would then imitate the sounds he was soaking up. "A lot of those early beginnings of how to learn and how I've learned how to understand music filters through everything I do now," he explains.
The early records he'd find himself trying to unpack included KISS 'Alive' and Pink Floyd's 'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' - disparate matches, but undoubtedly Ghost fuel with hard rock melodies and psychedelic tendencies. "I had the first and the second Pink Floyd on a double LP that was called 'A Nice Pair'. And that's the shit that I sat and listened to and played guitar to," he says proudly. "That's weird music, that's really weird chord sequences and melodies that sort of went nowhere. And, that coloured me a lot in my vision of this is how you write a pop song. Of course, I knew more conventional writing as well. But I figured that this resonates with me, and I want to write more like that."
Tobias is the first to admit that the influence his musical exposure has had on him isn't the most straightforward. "For all the years that I was in bands, up until Ghost, basically when I was in bands not doing well, I got a lot of, I wouldn't say stick, but it was always like, 'You write weird songs, there's something weird about them, and it will never really become anything because it has that sort of weirdness to it".
As he grew, the songs he'd heard reflected this inherent strangeness he'd constructed. Before the days of mass formulaic pop factories, the music emanating from the radio abided by the strictest rule of needing to at least be approachable, but within these confines, artists of the 70s and 80s would push the envelope as far as they could. Citing Nik Kershaw's 'The Riddle' as one example, "Holy shit, if you would have taken that song and taken it to a chord structure masterclass amongst pop writers now who want to write songs for Miley Cyrus or The Weeknd or any of that sort of level they would say, no, no, no, no, that this will never work. It's too strange. It's too weird. You can't do that; it doesn't have the normal chord progression.
"There are a lot of songs from the 80s that are like that," he reckons, "compared to the now, more informative way of writing, the 80s was braver actually, and it worked well. And those songs are evergreens in a way that a lot of the top radio shit from seven years ago is forgotten, and that's the stuff that I grew up with when I started playing the guitar."
Having made that inner sanctum, he would enter kindergarten a reality, one where he can explore those recesses of his mind shaken by the musical earthquakes he experienced; now, he's matured and deeply entrenched in the reality. "Throughout the modern day of pop writing, I know a few professional pop songwriters, and we continue having these conversations because in pop," he says, "where some of them work prolifically on really high releases, they're like, it's strange how the business wants everything to be so informative. Everybody wants a weird song, but still, all the big songs are usually very, very formatted [and] very, very simple."
While unpacking the songs he'd heard back in the 80s offered Tobias a chance to comprehend what makes a good song, it, more importantly, helped him to set out doing it on his own. When digging into crafting a new Ghost number, Tobias explains that "each new song is a little bit like virgin territory with its own riddle to be solved, and is always a combination of the horror of maybe not solving the puzzle, with the thrill when you do. And it's never easy because each new song needs something new. And so you constantly need to feed your ability with knowledge about how other things are."
Breaking it down into a figurative example, he likens it to being like a detective. "I'm assuming that part of being a great detective is to constantly have an open mind, but also constantly learning about human behaviour and wha people do. If you just had 100 forensic classes, but you know nothing about people and how they live their lives, it's gonna be hard to solve crimes." The same rings true for writers who have to read to improve and further understand language, while comedians pull from real-life experiences - music is no different. Tobias's early days of stripping down songs to their basic parts and then rebuilding them have remained a constant endeavour. "But that's how you write songs as well; you go and absorb new things."
The covers process, as mentioned, is a release for Tobias. When things are stuck when trying to piece together a new chapter for the Ghost bible, a cover offers up a chance for something lighter. "Working on covers can be equally euphoric," he confirms, "because it's fun to understand a song whereas, on the other hand, it can be almost demoralising because you're like, I can't believe that this song is so much better than anything that I've written! And it's so much easier. It's so simple."
"I find myself overcomplicating things often, but you might not hear the complicated detour that I took to end up at the more understandable, straighter version that ended up being the actual recording," he continues. "That's a never-ending struggle because that's how it's supposed to be. It's not like you write the one song. I don't think I know anyone or know of anyone who's content with the idea of having written one huge song. And then you know, okay, that's nirvana for you. You don't write the one song the same way that if you're a comedian, it's not like, 'Oh, I just told the funniest joke. So now I'm done".
While Tobias is one for wanting to keep the ball rolling and on a constant endeavour to continue his musical evolution, he knows there's a limit. Every release of Ghost must have a purpose. Nodding to the 60s method of firing singles out on all fronts, eventually compiling them for a full-length release, Tobias acknowledges his relationship with his fans is based on a more long-term understanding. "That's not how we do things; we make an album, and off of that album, there are singles - it's a 70s/80s thinking. And I don't want to refrain from that - I don't want too many singles to be these autonomous little creatures."
But the world is different now. It's a Wild West where being in the masses' consciousness is key, so things may have to change for him. Admitting that right now, he knows he's post-release of Ghost's last canon entry, 'Impera', which arrived back in 2022, and while 'Phantomime' is a reasonable enough bridge, sooner or later, he's going to have to play the game of ensuring Ghost ramp up. Earlier this year, Ghost collaborated with Def Leppard's Joe Elliott on a re-release of 'Impera' cut 'Spillways' which, while a fantastic addition to their arsenal, adds to the same notion Tobias is fearful of. "I'm slowly preparing for making a new record that's going to come out in 2024, which is way too long for the current contemporary music climate; you need to be ever-present," the last phrase hanging in the air ominously.
That doesn't mean he has to lower his standards, however. No Ghost release will exist just for content's sake. Everything must have its place. He even reckons a 14-track album is "a lot of music", and he still sees an album as being "22 minutes of music per side" - true to form, currently, no standard issue of any Ghost album breaches 12 tracks. He's even ready to aim for the likes of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles by swiftly lobbing a couple of spicy takes out. "Look, man, I don't even think that 'Exile on Main Street' is that good. Not even the fucking White album is that great - break it up! Both of those records would have been better if they were trimmed down to singular records."
That pop mind breaking through; Tobias is someone who knows that music is entertainment. Certainly, a medium which often leads to more bulky connotations, but it must entertain. It's why he doesn't pay any mind to those naysayers that yearn for Ghost to be more metal or to follow a different path. This is Tobias's game; we're just privy to the sermon. These days the floodgates are open and, when compared to previous decades, as Tobias remembers it, "you had to buy your own records. Whatever additional music you got, that wasn't maybe heard on the TV or the radio, when you took something from someone else, was usually a choice, so music styles could in some way be a little bit more insular back then just because you weren't subjected to as much." He mentions his beloved death metal as being a signifier of the changes happening. "Back in the day, when I was starting listening to extreme metal, that was completely embraced by a certain little subculture or group of mostly teenagers and 20-somethings. Whereas in the 2000s, when Vice started doing black metal reporting, all of a sudden you have indie personalities who were fans of Darkthrone, and so, obviously, what ended up that turned into this fusion, which was a positive and very natural thing."
This cultural shift is another reason Ghost's space is widening and its success growing. "Nowadays, people are a little bit more open," he admits. But, with this comes issues. "As time has progressed, metal and hard rock, as well as most genres that have been around for a while, [they've] gone from this youth culture to a conservative institution because so many of the fans are now aged." The passage of time waits for no one. But, more presciently for culture, it also means our understanding of what is 'good' and what should be where is moulded differently to when we were younger. "Unfortunately, that happens to most people regardless of who you were when you were 20," Tobias reckons, "or your ideals when you're like 40/50/60 years old. Your brain starts morphing into a slightly more conservative, slightly more nostalgic... You don't want things to change."
Tobias is the first to hold his hands up and admit the same has happened to him. He yearns for 1984 and even 1990-94. He would even be happy with 1987, back to those days with the crackling radio and a childlike spirit. "That would be so much cooler. I loved that way more than in this day and age. But I can't sit around and mope about that because it's not a problem that it's not 1987."
'Phantomime' is proof nostalgia can be a useful tool. It fuels with passion, and Ghost is Tobias's Neverland. "There's such a debate about what we are and why that is." Ghost are a band that, thanks to Tobias's musical education, transcend time. They exist on their own plain and with the evergreen, timeless sounds of yesteryear echoing around Tobias's head, long may Papa reign with his gloved melodic iron fist.

When it comes down to it, the vast majority of this job is simply making sure people get tea and coffee when they need it.
It’s not what people expect when I tell them: I’m a Prophet of the Lord*, tasked with protecting this world from those malign forces that would threaten creation. And, sure, there are times when I must gather the bold and the steadfast beneath my banner and make war against the darkness itself.
(It’s a pretty cool banner too, the rivers of prophecy themselves streaming in a shimmering cascade from the branches of the World Tree that grows out of my back. The rag-tag bands of misfits, paladins and lost little heroes look pretty badass when they gather under it.)
But, like I said, those times are pretty rare. Which is probably a good thing – the world can only take so many apocalypses, after all…
Most often, what I see in the river that streams from my eyes (seriously, the visions look exactly like I’m in floods of tears … I guess that’s because it’s what they are) are regular people who are ground down. They are the ones worn down by time, by sadness, by a world that has shown them time and again how little it cares for them.
They are also people with great power. Even if, most of the time, they do not realise it.
I see them in those droplets and, even as they shatter on the floor (or a nearby shoulder), I am tracing back their course through the river and marking the moments that brought them there.
All it takes is a kind word, a warm embrace, and a nice cup of tea to alter that course.
You wouldn’t believe the number of times that world-ending events nearly occurred, simply because a spectacular person was dangerously under-caffeinated…
Or maybe you would.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise really, that tiny moments of kindness have the power to save the world.
*(well … of the Lord(s)/Lady(ies)/Genderly Interesting Overlord)

I am appalled by the negativity in the comments of the reveal trailer. Not exactly surprised, but appalled.
I'm not saying you need to love it, there are some things that aren't quite sitting well me either–such as the overly cartoony graphics–which I'm hoping might look better and less mobile game-like in the actual gameplay trailer.
But the amount of people in the yt comments complaining about how it doesn't look like dark-fantasy anymore and how "woke" it seems ?????
If of all criticism, the thing you're pressed about is the representation (the ONE thing I think they've done pretty well afaict), then Dragon Age IS NOT FOR YOU. IT NEVER WAS.
As for the dark-fantasy thing- Dragon Age hasn't been strictly dark-fantasy in years. If you've even looked at a Dragon Age game in the last 10 years, you know this. Doesn't mean it can't still have some elements of it, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see, right?
Personally? The graphics in the trailer kinda caught me off-guard, but that's also been true of all cinematic Dragon Age trailers (remember how weird everyone looked in Inquisition's trailers?). And even if they do end up looking similar in-game, I'm sure I'll get used to it, as graphics haven't really stayed consistent through the first 3 games anyway.
It looks fun and like a great mix of Origins and Inquisition's high stakes with DA2's chaotic nobody protagonist surrounded by a merry band of misfits.
