NXEdge Style Senjinmaru

Mashin Hero Wataru features half-chibi robots - essentially a giant head with arms and legs - and a fantasy sci-fi world. This style was a staple of 90s mecha anime, especially from Sunrise. But Wataru has always been the shining star.

You may also remember these characters from the American adaptation video game - Keith Courage in Alpha Zones for the TurboGrafx 16. Typical late 80s early 90s hack job localization.

The beauty of Wataru's design language means that a typically chibi-style toyline like NXEdge Style can double as a Robot Damashii figure.

Senjinmaru is the Mashin piloted by Shibaraku, the old-fashioned big goof that's looking for love in all the wrong places. Think half Mr. Satan, half Boss from Mazinger - but much nicer. And his robot follows that design sensibility.

If you haven't seen Mashin Hero Wataru, treat yourself to a few episodes. It's a comedy action series by Sunrise from the 90s - a little bit of Dragon Ball, a little bit of Brave Series, and a little bit of Urusei Yatsura. Funny and exciting, and incredibly imaginative. Bandai Spirits released a handful of episodes on their Youtube channel a few years ago.

This is Hitochi!

He is a foreign robot that was stolen and reprogrammed by villains (they just did a Dr Wily move).

Although Hitochi is reprogrammed and had 90% of his past memories wiped, they are still roaming around in his systems. Sometimes appearing as fragments when he's sleeping/charging. Just like most of the robots that are owned by ROGUE, Hitochi is tasked with killing Cyber. But he disobeys this order and in return, gets teased for being a "weak, Megazord-looking robot".

Despite being teased a lot, Hitochi is usually chill with this. His coolheaded behavior and polite mannerisms have actually earned him the respect of most humans, including the ones from the Valorous Force. The VF kids mostly see him as "a villain that unintentionally does good things" rather than an actual threat, like Kevlar.

Among all the other large robots, Hitochi is the tallest. He is also insanely strong, being able to lift a billboard and even carry both Cyber and Jaya at the same time. For weaponry, he has a laser katana and a bow and arrow. He can also transform into a giant mechanical horse.

I feel like I should clarify that I took all these pictures myself, which I'd like to think I'm pretty good at because I took 4 photography classes in high school. I like going around and taking candid photos of environments and then drawing cartoons and other fictional characters on top of them, which is a little bit of a reflection of my love for cartoons and also my home in the Twin Cities. Some of these pictures are a bit old but I prefer posting these as a series.

Anyways isn't it crazy that there's a nexus connecting our reality to fictional ones in Minneapolis. /j

Arcane and Blue Eye Samurai compete for the best animated series I've ever seen, of all time, and they're both ongoing. That's wild. What gorgeous animation. Scavengers Reign is a wonderful sci-fi series that's actually original, and I'm sad to say that's a rarity. It shouldn't be! I'll let you discover the rest. Just a reminder that Love Death + Robots is an anthology, and as usually this entails hits and misses. But the hits are SO good.

Other good series that are not groundbreaking or anything in terms of animation (which is generally on purpose: most of them aim to emulate a specific established style, and succeed), but they still get the job done, and are fun to watch:

Might be a hot take but if the 30s-40s was the golden age of animation then the modern stylized animation of today is definitely the silver age, both are insanely creative and take (or took) so much effort and passion to make

Jet + Heihachi (Senna Gianelli): Quiet, serious, low-key machinist with some level of combat training. Alarmingly okay with the notion of replacing body parts (both her own and others') with machinery, despite her inexperience as a surgeon. Successfully built herself prosthetic/robotic feet after they were removed following a loss in battle.

Zero + Jet (Fuze): Fiercely independent wanderer who always seems to be restlessly looking for the next fight. Crackshot with his weapon and capable of flight but also doesn't consider himself above brawling. An experiment in bio-technic advancements that just wandered off one day, avoids human settlements as much as possible to stave off recapture.

Heihachi + Zero (Saltpetre): A friendly and quiet mechanic, who mostly keeps to himself- disguising the fact that he's shockingly willing to commit violence to achieve his goals. Very "end justifies the means" type outlook to things, but at least generally acts mostly moral.

Jet + Heihachi + Zero (208): An easygoing and confident battle cyborg who always sets his sights on the future to avoid thinking about the past. Has a bit of a messiah complex, but disguises it most of the time by acting almost cartoonishly self-centered and aloof- deep down he feels that his continued existence has to be continually justified by acts of virtue, but that if someone were to find out their feelings of pity would prevent him from being as effective. Highly skilled, but has equally heavy emphasis on the "glass" part of his being a glass cannon.
