'binary' isnt a slur, it isnt a mean word, it isnt a bad word. there are differences between how binary trans people are treated by others both within and outside of the trans community, between how you move through Cisiety and are harmed within it, and how nonbinary trans people are. there are things binary trans people are benefited by that actively hurt nonbinary trans people, and ime, whenever i bring those things up as being harmful to me, binary trans people wave them away because they are beneficial to them as binary people.

i dont need to coddle or comfort you and say things like "ohhh yes of course your gender is just as multifaceted and complex as minee!!". i don't need to justify myself when i point out that being or passing as a binary gender brings can give you certain situational advantages that being nonbinary bars from me. i dont need to continuously capitulate, i dont need to be constantly scared over whether or not im hurting your feelings by asking you to acknowledge my experiences as a nonbinary trans person.

I do wish that "oppositional sexism" was a more commonly known term. It was coined as part of transmisogyny theory, and is defined as the belief that men and women, are distinct, non-overlapping categories that do not share any traits. If gender was a venn diagram, people who believe in oppositional sexism think that "men" and "women" are separate circles that never touch.

The reason I think that it's a useful term is that it helps a lot with articulating exactly why a lot of transphobic people will call a cis man a girl for wearing nail polish, then turn around and call a trans woman a man. Both of those are enforcement of man and woman as non-overlapping social categories. It's also a huge part of homophobia, with many homophobes considering gay people to no longer really belong to their gender because they aren't performing it to their satisfaction.

It's a large part of the reason behind arguments that men and women can't understand each other or be friends, and/or that either men or women are monoliths. If men and women have nothing in common at all, it would be difficult for them to understand each other, and if all men are alike or all women are alike, then it makes sense to treat them all the same. Enforcing this rift is particularly miserable for women and men in close relationships with each other, but is often continued on the basis that "If I'm not a real man/woman, they won't love me anymore."

One common "progressive" form of oppositional sexism is an idea often put as the "divine feminine", that women are special in a way that men will never understand. It's meant to uplift women, but does so in ways that reinforce the idea that men and women are fundamentally different in ways that can never be reconciled or transcended. There's a reason this rhetoric is hugely popular among both tradwifes and radical feminists. It argues that there is something about women that men will never have or know, which is appealing when you are trying to define womanhood in a way that means no man is or ever has been a part of it.

You'll notice that nonbinary people are sharply excluded from the definition. This doesn't mean it doesn't apply to them, it means that oppositional sexism doesn't believe nonbinary people of any kind exist. It's especially rough on multigender people who are both men and women, because the whole idea of it is that men and women are two circles that don't overlap. The idea of them overlapping in one person is fundamentally rejected.

I think it's a very useful term for talking about a lot of the problems that a lot of queer people face when it comes to trying to carve out a place for ourselves in a society that views any deviation from rigid, binary categories as a failure to perform them correctly.

a genderqueer musician can literally say "i've been gendering myself as masculine for a year" in french and english-speaking news outlets turn it into "he's been a man for a year" and then the nonbinary wiki uses that article as a source to list this person as a genderqueer man without looking at the actual source material or getting someone who speaks french to look at it. it's really obvious what he said, especially if you know that masculinity does not equal manhood. he never said "man".

this may be hard for english speakers to understand, but in very binary languages, it's not uncommon for nonbinary people to use binary terms and pronouns because everything else is considered socially unacceptable or doesn't even exist. not everyone wants to go through the hassle of explaining neopronouns all the time, so they may just opt for the binary option that hurts the least.

like, my native language is german and while i don't like to, i sometimes refer to myself with masculine terms too because using gender-neutral language is so highly controversial that it might literally be unsafe or at least uncomfortable.

"using masculine terms" and "calling yourself a man" aren't necessarily the same thing either, btw. in german, i'm talking about nouns that describe a person: student. citizen. player. eater. literally everything. in french, adjectives are gendered too. so you basically can't talk about yourself without either gendering yourself as binary or using gender neutral language and risking a very negative reaction. i sometimes talk about myself with masculine terms, but i never call myself a man, a boy or similar.

and the people from the nonbinary people should really understand that if pronouns don't equal gender either.

"Oppositional sexism" (coined by Julia Serano) is a handy term here: the idea is that men and women are inherently rigid and mutually exclusive categories of people. Anything one category is, the other cannot be, and vice versa.

Here, oppositional sexism holds that if women are harmed by misogyny, then men benefit from it; women can never benefit from it, and men can never be harmed by it.

A lot of transphobia is rooted in the ways in which trans people fundamentally defy oppositional sexism, and thus endanger the gender binary. Men are supposed to be big, and women are supposed to be small; but trans men assert that men can be small, and trans women assert that women can be big (to use one overly-simplistic example).

A lot of trans people and trans allies still adhere to oppositional sexism, but claim to do it in a "trans-friendly" way: sex can be changed, but gender is instead rigid and mutually exclusive. Or- perhaps more commonly- gender can be expressed in any way, but the ways in which gender is experienced are instead rigid and mutually exclusive.

Which is how we arrive at this insistence that trans people fall into one binary gender experience, even if they don't actually identify as a particular "binary" gender. "Trans women are women" might mean trans women can look and act any way at all, but it also means they experience womanhood in the same way that all other women do, and that experience is rigid and mutually exclusive of "man" experiences.

It's also why so many people are so eager to create new "inclusive" ways of sorting trans people into the same gender binary using increasingly contrived language: People insist on knowing the gender someone was assigned at birth so they can categorize them as AFAB or AMAB, and thus conclude what gender experience they have: man or woman. People insist on categorizing nonbinary people as either transmasc or transfem so they can conclude what gender experience they have: man or woman. People insist on categorizing trans people as either TMA or TME so they can conclude what gender experience they have: man or woman.

The idea that trans men experience misogyny only implies that trans women don't if you believe that man and woman are rigid, mutually-exclusive categories.
