111. This Little Family, by Inés Bayard

Owned?: No, library Page count: 264 My summary: Three bodies lie around a table. Marie, Laurent, and baby Thomas. All poisoned. All victims of Marie. The question is why? My rating: 1/5 My commentary:

On the surface, this book has an interesting premise. Start at a murder, then flash back to see how and why this horrifying thing happened. In practice, though? I found myself hating this book more and more as it went on, and now I’m just pissed off. There’s nothing to like here. It’s just an endless cavalcade of misery with no light or sympathy, ostensibly about a serious subject, but dealing with it in a completely bizarre fashion. I’m gonna be annoyed about this one for a while.

(Warning for talk of rape, sexual assault, suicidal ideation, suicide, infanticide, and all kinds of unpleasantness under the cut.)

See, I get it, all of the things Marie does and thinks are things that a real person might experience after a traumatic experience like rape. But the thing is, Marie isn’t a real person, she’s a fictional character. And as a fictional character, she’s incredibly flat. I didn’t get a sense of what she wants, what she likes, who she is as a person. She has a perfect but not well-described life, gets raped, and becomes a shell of a person. But she was a shell of a person before, so who cares? She hates everyone for unjustifiable reasons. She doesn’t tell anyone about the rape - okay, fair, it’s a hard thing to speak out on, but she then blames everyone in her life for not reacting to it or realising it’s happened.

And again, I can imagine that’s happened to someone in real life. Trauma is tricky. But she’s not engaging enough as a protagonist to keep my sympathy for this, especially when literally all of her inner monologue is just her going on and on about how terrible her life is and how nobody understands her. There’s nothing else, it’s just that for pages and pages. She also has weird attitudes to gender - she’s repulsed by her son because he has a penis, and that reminds her of her rapist, which...is borderline TERF ideology. The penis is bad! The vagina is good! And she hates her husband for masturbating to porn, seeing him as just another potential assaulter when...it’s just porn. It seems like a huge overreaction, and the narrative seems to expect us to think she has a point, rather than just lashing out thanks to trauma.

And even outside of that, the premise doesn’t work. After we see the rape early on, that pretty much answers the question of why Marie does what she does. When she’s pregnant, it’s easy to guess that Marie’s suspicions that the CEO is the father might not be entirely true, mostly because she accepts this as fact with no analysis. Okay, then maybe it’s a tragedy, Marie sloping towards the inevitable. But if it is, there’s no real tension. From the start, she’s basically saying ‘I’m gonna kill everyone and myself’, so there’s no real tragedy when she actually does it. It’s just...bland and grim. And I hated it.

Next up, plague and death, and another spot of murder.

While I do find it funny that henchmen in Gotham probably warn each other about the Red Hood because he's a bat who will actually kill you. I think it would be better if Jason was actually seen as some sort of savior or idol to like 90% of the goons scattered around Gotham. Doesn't matter who they work for, they all know Jason, former crime-lord that took over majority of Gotham's underground in one night.

Jason showing up to patrol as backup for Dick in an overrun warehouse full of Two-Face's henchmen and as Jason's about to interfere, one of the men stops dead in their tracks and stares really hard at Jason until:

Goon: Oh my God, boss, is that you?

Jason, pulling out his guns, about to shoot:

Goon: Mr. Hood, sir???

Jason, halfway about to pull the trigger: Wait a min–Jeremy? Oh wow, it's been ages! How's the wife?

Goon (Jeremy): Oh my God it IS you, holy shit where have you BEEN? Me and the guys miss you, man!

Dick, with a knife at his throat: What is happening right now

Jason: Ahh, well, crime-lording just wasn't fitting in on the daily schedule. Tryna turn over a new leaf and all that

Goon (Jeremy): Aw, that's disappointing. We really liked working for you, right guys?

[Chorus of enthusiastic "YEAHS" from the rest of the henchmen (even the one holding Dick at knifepoint)]

Goon (Jeremy): Well, anyways, I can't beat you up knowing you're my old boss! You gave us the best health benefits! We'll just let you take the evidence and leave.

Jason: Aw, thanks guys :)

Your kid is relentless. You're tired from a whole afternoon of fun, and your arm's sore. You gently explain this to them, smiling weakly when they pout. Then you look at your husband, whose eyes shock you. Simon looks as letdown as the kid. The paper of his face mask subtly moves, and your brow pinches in confusion, unable to make out what he's trying to say. Then he lifts his free hand. Three. Three more.

You huff, a little grin overtaking your weariness. You're reminded these moments are not just for the kid, who holds one hand each as they walk between you, but for Simon, too.

It breaks your heart when you think of what he did not have or experience as a child. 

So, you bend slightly and squeeze your kiddo's hand. 

"Okay, three more swings. Then my arm's going to fall off."

Your kid giggles madly as you and Simon swing them again. Simon's gaze is fond and soft, low chuckles rumbling out as he watches the kid's feet come up off the ground. When you inevitably reach swing number three, your eyes meet again. This time, it's you who raises three fingers.

Simon deserves all this and more.

Trigons Backup Plan

So! Trigon knew from the moment his Daughter was taken in by the Monks of Azarath that it would be difficult to turn her to his will. He wasn't stupid, he knew just how hard it would be to make his daughter turn on everything she has ever known in her (very short) life.

He can't really blame her, even he believed that indiscriminate mass murder was wrong until his mid-200's, he just needs to wait for her to grow out of it.

But until then he still needs a way into the DC Universe. And if his daughter wouldn't help, then he could always just make a 2nd one.

So, he searches and eventually finds a Couple of Scientists who seem to be good targets. They are researching Magic and Ghosts, so he makes a Demonic Pact with them. He will give them the secrets needed to complete their Research, and in exchange all he asks is that they help him bare a child.

They agree, and Danny Fenton is born.

Danny was supposed to become a Hellmouth when he turned 16, unlocking his Demonic Powers and opening the way for Trigon to enter the DC Universe so he could conquer it.

Instead he managed to get himself killed at 14. Then he managed to come back to life as a Halfa, he got himself adopted by Clockwork, and he usurped the Throne of the Infinite Realms in the span of 1 year, therefore putting himself on the same level as his Father on the cosmic scale.

So there goes his Backup Plan.

Dammit.

Meanwhile Raven is panicking. She had been messing around with her Friends when they asked about the Spells she could do, and she off-handedly mentioned that she could cast Family Tracking Spells.

One thing led to another, and they all wanted to know if they had secret family. Then they asked if she wanted to try as well, and for some reason she agreed.

And long story short, she has a little brother somehow. A little brother who is only a few weeks away from turning 16, who doesn't know the Azarathian Spells she learned to prevent his own transformation into a Hellmouth.

Much like Welcome to Nightvale, I feel like a lot of people have forgotten just how big and influential Yuri on Ice was. It fully broke into the mainstream. It was everywhere. Evgenia Medvedeva, the top female figure skater in 2016 and 2017, had YOI plushies thrown to her on the ice and wore a Victuuri tshirt to an interview. Japanese pair skaters Miu Suzaki and Ryuichi Kihara skated to the YOI theme at the fucking Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics. The Olympics. Canadian ice dancer Joseph Johnson did the ‘J.J. Style’ hand symbol in the kiss and cry. Johnny Weir made me cry by talking about how he wished the homophobic world of figure skating he experienced could have been more like the kinder world of Yuri on Ice.

There were cameos and references to it everywhere. Everyone was talking about it. People who had never watched anime were watching it. It was so big it crashed Crunchyroll and Tumblr. Twice. And all that for what was at its core, a queer love story that helped pave the way for more queer stories to come.
