Sleepover

Hello dearies~ I apologize for the absence, school caught up with me. But here is a little something to make up.

Summary: After VDC, Epel invites his girlfriend to stay for a sleepover, that turns into a frightful night

Pairing: Epel x Oc, minor Ace x Oc, minor Silver X Oc

VDC wasn't a great success for Night Raven College this year, having lost for the 100th consecutive time to Royal Sword Academy by ONE vote. It left a bitter taste. But some students found consolation in other activities....

"No." Vil said to Epel's request.

It was Saturday after VDC, some activities were still happening, which meant some people were lingering. Notably, Victoria Zigvolt. And Epel had just asked Vil if she could stay for a sleepover.

"Hey, you two!" Vordella called them from his corner in the room. "Don't forget protection!" He sneakered as Vil's face contorted to pure shock and horror.

"Don't say it like that!" He gasped. "And it's not happening, she's not staying!"

Vordella raised an eyebrow. "Why not? I say it like that to Nigel and Silver all the time." He explained nonchalantly. Nigel, seated right next to him, coughed in his hand as a crimson blush coloured his cheeks. He swatted his hand at Vordella's head and muttered a low: "That's enough."

Vil, still speechless, turned back to the young lady and young man. Victoria was barely taller than Epel, but her 5cm heels make it almost clear. Almost. And she spoke.

"Do not worry, sir, as my grandfather has asked me to keep the subject of physical relationships outside of school grounds." She said all formally.

Vil had done a bit of a research on her. Daughter of the biggest wine makers of Briar Valley, granddaughter of the ex-general Baul Zigvolt, a countess. Yes, perhaps he could trust her and Epel alone in his room.

"Fine," he started, "But if I suspect that anything happened, I will be after both of you."

"Thank you, sir!" Victoria smiled and Epel grinned.

("Did you see the DVD in his hand?" Vordella smirked as he whispers to Nigel. "Is it horror?" This one asked, still working on his alchemy assignment. "Yes." "Good luck to Vil.")

Epel pulled Victoria to his room, revealing the simple yet comfortable dorm.

"My roommates are out to their own sleepovers." Epel said and opened the bathroom, to let Victoria change her clothes in there as he set up his laptop, blankets, pillows and some snacks. Then he switched to his own sleepwear, settling on his bed.

Victoria came out wearing a lavender night dress, her hair carefully braided, then she settled right next to Epel, cuddling into his side, sniffling from a blocked nose. He smiled and pulled the blanket over them, hitting play on the movie.

However, who said horror is for everyone?

While Victoria hid her face against Epel's chest, tears welling in her eyes from the gorey scene, Epel hugged her back, attempting to put on a brave façade to protect his girlfriend. Yet, when the next death came both shrieked and closed the laptop. It was enough movie for tonight. Victoria sniffled and sneezed in her arm as Epel rearranged her on the bed and stood up.

"I'll go get you something to clean your nose and a hot drink." He whispered, kissing her forehead as Victoria nodded and sniffled, then he left.

Turning the corner of the hallway, Epel almost screamed upon colliding with Vordella. This one looked the first year up and down then sighed.

"That's what watching horror movies before sleeping does to you." He muttered and left.

Epel groaned and shook his head. The movie did more damage than he thought.

Hot chocolates in hand and some more paper towels for Victoria, Epel went back to his room.

Back in the room, Victoria sat up and blew her nose, then drank the hot chocolate. It was all calm, just a little moment between them-

"FELMIER!! I CAN HEAR MY COUSIN SNIFFLING ALL THE WAY FROM DIASOMNIA, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO CAUSE HER PAIN???" Sebek yelled as he kicked down the door, scaring both Epel and Victoria. Sebek ran and pushed Epel away, standing in front of Victoria. "Victo, what has this miscreant done?"

Victoria grumbled and pulled on Sebek's ear. "Stop screaming will you!? I'm fine, I'm sick, not crying!" To which Sebek whined with Victoria's grip on his ear. She released him as Epel settled back next to her and she looked at Sebek. "Why are you here?"

Sebek cleared his throat and sat next to Victoria on the bed. "My.... What do you call it again? Older cousin senses? Whatever it is, tingled. As the older one, it is my duty to aid and protect you."

"Awww Bebek was worried about me!" Victoria chuckled and hummed teasingly. Sebek groaned and crossed his arms.

"Stop this behaviour."

"Yeah, yeah." She nodded and cuddled back to Epel. He smiled and kissed her forehead as Sebek scowled. "Wanna watch a movie?"

"Remind me again, why were you watching a horror movie?" Jack shook his head as he saw Epel, Victoria and Sebek bundled up together.

"Uhm.... Lilia said it was a good idea..." Epel murmured.

"Uhm...." Abi blinked, "So now, you want us to stay for a sleepover?"

"Yeah!" Victoria smiled and offered an apologetic look. "Please."

"Fine by me." Deuce shrugged.

"Eh...." Ace whispered.

"Please?" Abi whispered. back.

"Fine." He agreed. She smiled and giggled, kissing his cheek.

"My only question is why is the robot here again?" Epel muttered.

"I crossed with them in the hallways and Abi told me to come!" Ortho answered happily in his robotic voice.

"Okay then...."

"You want horror stories? I know a few one." Yuubi smirked.

"I have a very very bad feeling about that." Yuumi scowled.

A knock came through. "Time to sleep!" Vil's voice said before his steps went away.

Well, if Vil is saying so, who were they to defy him?

Everyone settled in their respective beds, sharing if necessary. Ortho stood turned off in his corner, Yuumi and Yuubi on the vacant bed on the right, Abi and Ace on the vacant bed on the left, Sebek at the foot of the bed and Jack and Deuce on a mattress on the floor.

Victoria looked at Abi and Ace, then turned back to Epel.

"Are they together?" She whispered.

"Worst, they are stupid." He whispered back.

"Both of you, sleep!" Jack said.

"Fine, fine! Good night."

"Why did you give him that DVD?" Vordella asked as he turned the page of his novel. Nigel didn't even ask how he know. Vordella always knew.

"Lilia wanted to pull a prank and I wasn't about to disappoint my father-in-law." He said and took another swing from the bottle. The liquor ran like fire down his throat.

"...Excuse you, WHAT!?" Vordella looked up from his novel with a shocked face. Nigel's hand was still on the bottle, though it was suspended in the air.

"Shit," Nigel muttered, "I drank too much for tonight."

in your most recent tyson post, you said something about leo being distinctly autistic-coded and I was wondering if you could elaborate on that? it sounds really interesting (sorry if you've already posted something on this, I couldn't find anything though)

Of course! I do have a specific tag for talking about Leo's autistic-coding/traits - [here], and [one for Nico as well].

The main aspects with Leo being autistic-coded actually have a lot to do with Nico being autistic-coded, because it's the comparisons between the two that most clearly indicate Leo is autistic-coded rather than it just being his ADHD or etc.

So with Nico being autistic-coded, it's very clear in the Titan's Curse that he's intended to be autistic. First, the first series has a repeating pattern of secondary characters being very distinctly neurodivergent-coded in different ways (Annabeth's adhd/dyslexia, Tyson's down syndrome-coding, Nico's autism-coding). With Nico's introduction, he's pretty stereotypically autistic and we're given a lot of descriptors about him that are notably not attributed to him being ADHD, like it would be for other demigod characters. He doesn't register social cues such as people getting annoyed at him, he's asking/making inappropriate or impolite questions/comments, he gets particularly upset about change (such as Bianca joining the Hunt) and generally gets emotional, and one of his most notable traits he's introduced with is the fact that he has a special interest (MythoMagic) - and we're shown that this special interest particularly colors how Nico navigates the world. While ADHD has hyperfixations, we don't really get much acknowledgement of hyperfixations with demigods usually - Annabeth gets a little, but most others don't and it's not nearly as focused-in on as Nico's is.

Then as the series continues we see these traits stick with him and him start to show or voice more traits that similarly indicate he's autistic: He regularly mentions how he doesn't understand living people and prefers the company of the dead (social issues). He has more notable stims than other demigods (twisting his ring, fiddling with bones, etc). He's indicated to have strong sensory preferences (usually wearing mostly black/aversion to bright colors, usually wearing layers/his coat, multiple times he's described as wearing loose/baggy clothing or clothes too big for him). He has specific comfort items (his ring, likely his jacket(s) as well). We later get even more information about his special interests (Mythomagic/mythology/history and an older interest in pirates - the latter he specifically notes likely heavily influenced his feelings towards Percy). He struggles with emotions and facial expressions and tone. He struggles particularly with ostracism and feeling like he doesn't fit in and has something distinctly different about him from the people around him (who notably, all have ADHD, which indicates it isn't the ADHD that's making him feel that way), and other characters regularly describe him as being off-putting because of his strange behaviors - again, different from specific ADHD traits they recognize. And that last point is kind of notable because we have Hazel and Bianca for comparison - we know people are off-put by both Nico and Hazel because of being children of Hades/Pluto and their powers/aura, but other characters get past that general feeling of discomfort way faster with Hazel. And even after characters get past the death stuff with Nico, there's a second thing that they aren't moving past that isn't a factor with Hazel (Nico's autism).

So that brings us to Leo - Leo is paralleled to Nico a lot. And there's some very specific traits about him that we know are autistic-coding because of how they're used with Nico: He similarly struggles with social cues/etc, and in a very similar parallel to Nico describes how he prefers the company of machines to people because machines make more sense to him. He has similar types of clothing/sensory preferences (again some stuff with layers but also - pockets! He likes having pockets and things to put stuff in! He's even introduced as having a jacket with lots of pockets), and he has a distinct special interest (machinery) that we specifically know heavily influences how he views and navigates the world (constantly comparing things to machinery, describing things with machinery metaphors/terminology, etc etc). He even describes his entire general worldview to Hazel and it's a machine metaphor. He also similarly struggles with ostracization like Nico does, the only difference being that Leo specifically puts on a persona to compensate for areas he knows he's lacking in and very explicitly describes it as a means to make people like him, because without it he normally struggles to fit in (He's masking!). We also see notes of characters describing that similar discomfort with Leo's behaviors that they do with Nico, except without the aura of death this time. And when we're in Leo's POVs we see a very stark difference between his masking and his actual personality/behaviors such as his internal dialogues or how he behaves when he's alone. Also, like Nico, he stims more than other demigods, though for Leo it's more attributed to his ADHD. Leo also, more often than most, similarly struggles with tone and reading the room, such as making misplaced jokes/comments or etc.

But yeah! It's really interesting. Also it's just a fun thing that ADHD/dyslexia and autism have comorbidity, so it makes sense that we see demigods who are also autistic. It's also really fun to look at how other characters are coded in the series, what coding looks like in the riordanverse specifically (usually it's tied into the mythological stuff - like Chiron being in a wheelchair but he's actually a centaur, Grover being introduced as having a muscular disease but he's actually a satyr, demigods having adhd/dyslexia, Tyson being coded as having down syndrome but he's a cyclops, etc etc - it's a lot of specific metaphor stuff that I've talked about a bit before), and to look at how characters are compared to one another.

I think the part of Twisted Threads that fucks me up the most is that the Olympians just... didn't have anything on Arachne. The "sexual indiscretions" she talks about Zeus committing are completely true- Heracles confirms so in Favored Son- in fact, Zeus' sexual behaviors seem to be well established public knowledge.

Athena is spoken of as a master of communications, she was, after all, the one who mentored Arachne and is an Olympian herself. And she does deceive, regardless of what she told Arachne, Athena does flat out lie using Arachne's voice at the end ("the recent accusations against Zeus have proven to be fraudulent"). But even Athena found Arachne's record to be so flawless that the only option the Olympians had was to kill her. Arachne had neither done nor committed anything that could be spun to be as remotely vile as Zeus.

There is the argument that Arachne's trusted (again, trusted, where the Olympians are largely not) voice and powerful brain made Athena believe that it was simply a better use of resources to kill and then puppet her. But I would argue that public humiliation and disapproval has repeatedly been shown as the preferred method of the Olympians to bend people to their will (Heracles and Oedipus) and the most effective way of making someone irrelevant regardless of their prior standing (Ariadne). Well, the song said it itself "Nothing goes to waste in the City," the Olympians would not have discarded Arachne if they had a way to regain control over her.

There was no way to "smear" her in return, for all her flaws exist only in her ambition, and that ambition was only a flaw to the Olympians, not the population of the City at large.

ZUN's commentary on Koakuma's fortune slip seems to suggest that she may not actually be a demon, and instead perhaps some kind of... demon-themed magician or something?

So the somewhat popular headcanon of Koakuma being a succubus might be improbable.

He furthermore suggests that the nickname Koakuma might be derived from her personality. Helpfully, Koakuma or "little devil" is a term for a character archetype sufficiently widely-recognised to have a Pixiv Encyclopedia entry, which includes such details as (approximate translations):

"A bewitching person who toys with the hearts of others." "A person who uses cuteness, sexiness, and innuendo to draw in targets, then dances around their interest, teases them, and behaves in a sadist-esque manner to toy with their feelings." "In summary, a cat-like personality."

So the personality of fanon succubus Koakuma might be probable.

... This is basically the perfect opposite of what I would've expected from Koakuma getting a canon personality.

Do you have recommendation reading to understanding tarot cards? Tarot cards intrigued me and i must admit i have difficulty understanding it despite having read about it a couple of times from different sources

I don't, sorry! I learned by picking up a deck, studying the imagery and patterns on the cards, and practicing. I also have gotten lots of readings done for me by people I feel comfortable chatting with about their processes, which is an extension, I think, of practicing.

There are lots of online resources for specific card meanings (Biddy Tarot, Labyrinthos, etc.), but each individual deck will have its own nuance depending on the design of the deck. So, the same sort of hobbies, exercises, and opportunities that sharpen pattern recognition and literary analysis are also helpful here.

Reading tarot cards requires intuition, but intuition is just ingrained pattern recognition. So, my best recommendations are (i) engage with the patterns you see and (ii) seek out patterns where you don't immediately notice any.
