these flags are solely for witches. you may request specific flags that more apply to your practice or combine the practices of other paths.
these are not to be used as fiction or regarded as such however you may take inspiration from them.
these paths are not definitive, everyone's practice is different and there are many more than what you may see online.
witchcraft is personal and diverse.
transx/transid and radqueers dont touch my shit thanks.

I think this might just be me needing more media with older queer people in it, but we are in desperate need of more transgender wizards (wizard as a gender-neutral term and can mean anyone, not just trans men).
Hear me out, centuries old trans character, being allowed to grey, and wrinkle as cis characters generally are, and able to live so many lifetimes helping others and understanding themselves.
Staff intricately carved with runes as a glamour or brewing ominously glowing and bubbling potions for their transition instead of hrt, runes and symbols that function similar to a trans pin adorning their robes in intricate silver or golden thread stitching. Tattoos across their skin of the stars and protection sigils covering over OR lining around to highlight top surgery scars, and living secluded in their forest tower tending to their garden, reading, aiding travellers and divining prophesies from the stars they commune with and just being allowed to wizard.
I think ofmd and wwdits have affected me a bit and now I crave more media with queer people that are not still incredibly young and in high school-mid 20s (not that there is anything wrong with that at all). It's just seeing that I may be able to get the chance to age as a trans person is amazing and I also want them to be silly and cast fireball too pleas

The main reason it's important to be at least somewhat literate in historical paganism and folk magic isn't so you can make your own practice exactly like it; it's to be able to recognize when someone is making historically inaccurate claims, because "asserting made-up shit about history as real fact" is a sign you're possibly looking at a cult and/or scam.
For the same reason, it's a good idea to be somewhat literate in pop culture media. Because being able to look at something a person is trying to pass off as Genuine Ancient Tradition or something and recognize that it's nothing like anything people actually believed or did back in Ye Olden Times but it sure as heck resembles something from a popular TV show or TTRPG is a valuable discernment skill.

Red Flags in Witchcraft Books/"Information"
Take it with a grain of salt as usual. A read a good amount of them, own some, returned some... I'm not the master of what these books entails, but it's just about taking what resonates with you and your energy craft in general, and leaving out the rest. For beginner witches, there's no end all be all book. A lot of witchcraft books are going to be biased about something on what they believe and what they practice. However, there are SOME things that you do need to know by the book when it comes to topics like proper crystal/stone care, essential oils that are toxic to the animals in your home, what ingredients you should not smoke for health reasons... And even some ends on high magic where you need to do the ritual as read, drawing in the sigil as descripted to pull off something very traditional and ceremonial -- these I don't mess with. If they are of tradition to how some cultures/religions use them, they must be done by how they do it with respect and understanding. Just use practical common sense. .............. These are some of the practical things that made me put down a witchcraft/occult book and return it/throw it away: 1. Authors bragging they are masters of dragons/transmutations/faeries/demons/angels, etc. (So many of them...) While giving out beliefs as if they're absolute facts. Example: "Heaven and dragons are located in the center of the Bermuda Triangle. I know this because I'm a dragon master and they all listen to me because I was a high priestess. There's 14 clans and I'm in all of them. There are pink dragon clans, star dragon clans, warrior clan--" 2. Additionally to the first -- believing they're the ONLY ONES that can help people and they have no one else to turn to, or they are the only one who can truly have this ability. My way or the highway! (Seen a lot of these too) 3. Bringing in radical politics that has nothing to do with witchcraft. It's exceedingly annoying and unprofessional, especially when it has nothing to do with what I'm looking for. 4. -Extreme absolutes. 5. Initiation into a cult, and comparing everyone else outside of them as stupid, or even easy prey to manipulate. Personal experience: A "high priest cultist" once tried to initiate me and gave me his book. I won't say who it is, but he belongs to a cult where they saw themselves as superior beings, and humanity are just livestock to them. (They don't think they're humans) They promote rape/manipulation/child grooming because they believe it was their birthright to rule humanity. 6. More trivial whining, less information about the craft. 7. Claiming being something with how you're born with, makes you automatically better than the others. (Aka: Class A narcissism) Glorifying something that has no advantage of disadvantage, but only because it pertains to the author. These have nothing to do with witchcraft or being a better person. I immediately don't trust anyone who does this. One upping is never a good sign to get information from -- and they give off/bad vibes anyway off the bat. Examples: "Being bisexual makes you more likeable towards faeries than straight/gay people." "Being neurodivergent/normal makes you more psychic than normies/neurodivergent people."
"Being (insert race) makes you more psychic than (insert race)."
8. Replacing medical needs with witchcraft. 9. Treats spirits as if they're servants. ---- I'll add more or edit things when I get the time. I hope this helps.

I really wish we could see the full list of Blackbeard’s crimes. It’s a pretty curious list featuring things like bootlegging, shoplifting?, impersonating who?, witchcraft?, plagiarism of what?, changing the word “god”?
✨But also!✨
Excessive mirth
Smart casual attire formal function
(I’m not sure if this 👆is one thing or two separate)
“Communism”
Unlicensed midwifery

Without being too much, I really appreciate all of my amazing mutuals and supporters through the last few months of working on this project and being in this fandom! I've never been as accepted and celebrated as I have for my own work, and it's been so magical to share with so many of you wonderful and insane people! Truly the best found-family crew one could hope for, whether it's screaming in the tags, sending me the *best* prompts for lingerie Ed possible, or just being the super sweetest, kindest, most uplifting moots in the messages possible.
Thank you all so so much, this is my love letter to every one of you who I have had a chance to bond with through this madcap journey to S2 (and beyond!)

Witchcraft Red Flags! 🚩🚩🚩
This is a list of things to watch out for, whether about the practice or the people who practice it.
People who say that there's only one way to practice, and if you're not doing it that way then you're not a real witch.
People who appropriate a closed culture and justify it by saying "their deity called to me".
People who are noticeably not from a closed culture and are selling items from that culture (smudge kits, dream catchers, anything chakra, etc) or are calling themselves "shaman," "reiki master" etc.
People who claim that they are speaking for a deity. This is seen a lot in some covens and mostly in Cults where the "leader" is Godspoused to said deity.
People who sell spirit companions. Spirit shops claim that they have bound a spirit to an item and that if you buy said item then the spirit will be under your control.
People who claim that you have to have other witches in your bloodline to be a witch. (These are known as Heriditary witches. They practice the same way their ancestors did, which isn't inherently bad, but the way that they present themselves is. Witchcraft is for ANYONE.)
Witches who use "we are the granddaughters of the witches you couldn't burn." Referring to the Salem Witch Trials, and the witch trials across Europe.
Another witch guarantees that spells work 100% of the time. They do not always work, and that's okay. If your spell has failed, you are not a bad witch.
Witches who can cast "physical change spells" on you guarantee that it will work. (Think body modification spells, i.e., make you taller/shorter, change the size of your lower region, change eye color, make you an angel, mermaid, and other mythical creatures.)
Witches who use the terms "white" magic and "black" magic. These terms are heavily racist coded.
People who offer to teach you witchcraft for a fee. (Think like $50+)
Norse Witches who use heavy white supremacy runes or sigils should be avoided. (You can learn more about this at Southern Poverty Law Center)
Witches who fully believe that they can move things with their minds.
People who use clairvoyance in their craft. (This is directed to those who use their gift to scam others. If something feels too good to be true, then it probably is with this type of diviner.)
Divination witches who charge $50+ dollars for a basic reading and then turn around and try to scam more out of you. (This also applies to those who say that your bloodline is cursed or they say something is bad around you, then they say "DM so I can cleanse you of XYZ"
Witches who claim that they are a reincarnation of a deity or other very powerful entity.
Feel free to reblog with your own Witchcraft Red Flags!

Some toxic witch shit/red flags I've seen and what you should watch out for:
Tumblr media
1. Considering things "low vibrational" if they don't personally like it or saying being "low vibrational" is bad and basically the whole idea that you have to be happy and full of love and light all the time and if you aren't, you're being a witch wrong. Negative emotions are just as important as positive emotions, and in order to have a stable mind you must give ALL your emotions the respect and validation they deserve. You're only human.
2. Fear mongering in general/gate keeping. Things like "don't do this OR ELSE" or "YoU cAnT wOrK wItH eClIpSe EnErGy!" Or "you can't just give sigils new meanings!" Or even when witches won't explain their process when you ask questions without actually explaining any reason why.
"Why can't I do this?"
"BeCaUsE!"
"How were you able to do this?"
Radio silence
Idk something about not sharing how a spell or ritual works when they act like they know everything is kinda shadey to me.
3. Anyone who says you HAVE to worship or work with deities, or people who think they're better than you because they "work with more deities than you’ll ever learn the names of little kid." Lame as fuck. Honestly might start ironically calling people like this "low vibrational" just to be petty and pretentious lol.
4. People who try to force you into practicing three fold law. Those who claim karma will hurt you if you hex someone 1. Doesn't understand what karma is, and 2. Doesn't understand is a personal belief and not universal.
5. Witches who think taking medications interferes with your power and tells you to stop taking them, and witches who say they can cure illnesses whether it's mental or physical. Those witches are wrong. 𝘋𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘥𝘰𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳.
6. People who threaten to hex/curse you if you don't do what they say, or claim to know that you will be hexed if you don't do a certain thing. Please try to ignore these people.
7. ANYONE who thinks their beliefs are facts. I see this most often in occult books where the author has spent their whole lives being spiritual and therefore thinks they know all the facts about the afterlife/where spirits come from/how to properly summon energy. All these theories are extremely useful and I think they should be written about, but they are not facts. It's definitely good to read books like these because they're very interesting and broaden your own ideas, but there is really no proof for anything so don't just immediately believe everything you hear, explore these topics yourself.
8. Similar to number two: witches who claim they "sense" dark/negative energy around you, or claim that the deity you work with is actually telling them you're doing something wrong. Anyone who claims something horrible is about to happen to you or that your cursed and they offer to do a cleansing ritual for money. These people are trying to scare and scam you.
9. Witches who practice unethical love spells and also pretend these spells aren't baneful/harmful. Controlling someone's free will is and always will be unethical. If you're gonna interfere with free will at least be honest and get off your high horse. I DO NOT CONDONE LOVE SPELLS THAT INTERFERE WITH FREE WILL IN ANY WAY. If you do that type of gross shit I am not the person you want to follow.

Welp, after years of exposing myself to and studying BS in occult and occult-adjacent spaces, I feel pretty confident in saying that if somebody starts trying to push you into trying hypnosis, getting a past life reading, or participating in some other form of mystical/quasi-mystical practice to uncover critical information about yourself, get the heck away from them. Even if they only have the best of intentions, this is how people end up getting pulled into a lot of cult and conspiratorial bullshit.

My AP environmental class had a slideshow vaguely mentioning old-timey healing stuff including herbs and how people used to use them as medicine.
Teacher: … actually, most of the “witches” that have been killed throughout history were likely just healers.
Classmate I’m vaguely familiar with: Do you think witches are real, Mr. [name]? Me: well, I’m right here, so.
complete silence in the classroom for a second while everyone absorbs that
Teacher: Well, there you go! :D
