•i’m vegetarian ( not a sustainable lifestyle for all but it works for me and i’m doing my part to not contribute to the meat industry )

•i buy all my clothes used ( no more supporting fast fashion! )

these are my questions

i want to be tough and empowered

but in the meantime i am insecure and fragile

do empowered women too sigh at the way their thighs puff out when seated?

do they too poke at their round tummies and feel utterly defeated with each pinch?

do they too strain their cheeks and eyes in unnatural shapes to try to manufacture a standard smile?

do they too sit in front of a mirror for hours, trying to master the art of sticking your chin out just right so it doesn’t fold?

do they too critique their arms nose butt jaw head shoulders knees and toes until they know each pore and freckle and stretch mark like an old friend?

or is it just me?

hi everyone!! thank you for being so patient while i experience a little bit of writers block. i have been writing so much material for school, which has drained me greatly ( please, take writing classes in school, but not too many! it’s exhausting and really wrings out any motivation i have to write outside of assignments ). i hope to be back soon. in the meantime, feel free to send me asks! i have a few DMs i have to get to as well, so just know i’m working on catching up with everything :) but if you’d like send me an ask and i’ll go through and answer some. alright, have a swell evening!

nervous system

my nervous system:

first my heart stutters down my ribcage

heavy and thumping

then my limbs fold onto each other

arms grip arms and fingers interlock

knees and shoulders meet in the middle

like clockwork, my palms sweat

soon my stomach aches for assurance

teeth grit and refuse to release from the grooves

and finally my jaw clenches, leaving a lasting pain

magnetism

i wish i was magnetic. i wish my words pulled people in and my actions made people want to get closer.

those who are magnetic seem to have it easy. conversations flow seamlessly, because it’s simply the law of nature. people are attracted to them.

not even physical attraction; people can have personalities, a sense to them, that everyone is led to because nature says so.

i wish i was magnetic because i am not. my mere existence does not prompt others to feel interested in what i have to say. people don’t feel any particular attatchment to me.

and i’ve come to terms with that. of course, i’ll wish i were a magnet from time to time. i’ll want strangers to feel drawn towards me and i’ll want to seem interesting. effortlessly engaging, if you will.

but the people that somehow found their way towards me? they defy the laws of nature. they don’t care if i’m a magnet or not, because they want to be close to me. despite everything about me being repelling, they are my friends. and this connection is stronger than that of a magnet. because we worked for it, and we chose it.

maybe being a magnet would lead me to parties. if i were a magnet, i’d have more acquaintances. but i’m perfectly fine without being attractive like that of a magnet, because i have everything i need without the assistance of a little extra force.

constant

i was dangerously close to posting a sad monologue of me, shaking out my thoughts with intentionally saddening word choice.

rather than that, i will take this time to remind us all of the beautiful constants in life. the things that no matter how much you want to give up, won’t give up on you.

that dog that walks by your window, without fail, every saturday

vanilla ice cream; classics don’t die

colors will never disappear. the sky will be blue and the grass will be green and your favorite sweater will be yellow

the moon will always be there; you can rely on it to change just enough to be interesting, but stay still through it all

the wind that will swoop in to remind you that it’s the heat’s better half

the barista that writes a smiley face next to your name on your order; they’ll believe in you, and you have the marked-up plastic cup to prove it

no matter how much change slips its way into your life, no matter what is keeping you up at night, or keeping you in bed in the morning, there will always be somethings that occur without fail. if they can do it, so can you. i don’t know about you, but i feel better already.

a girl of many hats

it’s difficult to pick who you want to be.

recently i’ve decided i’m not going to.

“being someone” is far more than how you dress, how your hair is styled, the slang you bark.

i don’t need to choose who i will be on any given day. that foundation was set long ago.

i am a girl with kindness to spread and jokes to share. i stay comfortable, because it’s important to me. i work hard because it’s in my bones. being empathetic is in my brain chemistry. i care about my relationships and journey. that is the someone i have become.

however, i am a girl who wears many hats. they don’t change the girl underneath; but they sure as hell add to her.

i have an adventurer hat. it rests in the winter but is practically glued to my head during the summer. with the adventurer hat come hiking sandals and thrift store flannels. headbands with avocados on them. i might say stuff like, “rad”. that hat fills my head with ideas of picking up yoga. wearing this hat gives me the urge to eat sun butter toast and watch the sunrise. it has an edge to it, but enjoys the simple life. i like that.

i have a goblin hat. i only wear it for special occasions, because not many people find it particularly fashionable. i honestly don’t either. this hat fits comfortably over two sloppy french braids. when wearing this hat i am less keen to sunlight and eat far too many mozzarella cheese-sticks. fuzzy socks warm my stone-cold soul. if i wear this hat i typically seek asylum in the shelter of my room and binge-watch sitcoms. i will be the first to admit that it is extremely goofy.

i have a colorful hat. i put it on and i feel carefree, flouncing around in whatever i want to wear, no matter how bright the color. this hat likes posing for pictures and wearing scrunchies in my hair, friendship bracelets along my wrists. i tend to be more soft and gentle, and have the zest to embroider everything and take photographs and write whatever comes to mind. if i wear this hat i immediately notice each flower on my path. this hat makes me ten times more organized than i usually am. it is pleasant.

so, after years of desperately attempting to place myself in a box, i have cracked the code. there are only hat boxes.

i am the same girl, with each hat i wear. the same swollen nose, the same green eyes, the same airy laugh. but with each day i get to pick what hat i wear. and with each year i get to stumble across new hats and add them to my collection.

oh how lovely it is to be human and get to wear hats.

the day the free spirit is freed

she can finally see a shooting star

she is in the sky where her music will play and her heart will beat

we all mourn, weep, feel numb for a while

it’s hard to accept that the world was holding her back

but now she laughs her campfire crackling giggle

and all is well, i hope.

but it gives me comfort knowing that her soul is thriving

she never could be held down
