How do you format a book?
I’m still on my first draft so I’m not at that point with my work yet, but I’ll refer you to Abbie Emmons’ video on the subject - she also has a lot of other great writing tips if that helps!

Happy STS! If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
If I could tell my younger self anything, it would be that the key to outlining and worldbuilding is to ask myself the question "Why Does It Matter?" Because if it doesn't matter to the character and the plot, then I'm wasting my time worldbuilding it, and I'm just procrastinating.
There were many years there where I would spend so much time and energy worldbuilding and plotting, that by the time I began writing a story I was bored of it. That stopped me making good progress on my stories for years.
It wasn't until I stumbled over Abbie Emmons on youtube that I first heard someone talk about worldbuilding in that way and it really unlocked the key to the whole process for me.
So if I could have learnt to look at it that way much earlier, I can't even thing about how much forward progress I might have made just a little earlier.

“My writing is either great, or it is making me great. There is no bad writing. Every time you sit down and practice your art, that practice is not wasted. It does not matter if you’re not proud of it, or if you’re not happy about how it came out — that’s okay! It is not wasted because it has brought you experience.” —Abbie Emmons

Rating books by their huggableness
I’m a book hugger. Whenever I’m upset, I will hug the nearest book. Why? For one, it is more socially acceptable to bring a book to school than your favorite teddy bear or baby doll. Also, there are a surprising number of people who aren’t willing to give hugs to those in need, so hugging books can help in case of hugging emergency! In my experience, some books are more huggable than others, and…

Etrit's Internal Conflict
So, I've been watching a lot of Abbie Emmons's videos (shout out to her because I absolutely freakin' love her content!), and I've struggled in trying to write the perfect internal conflict (desire, fear, and misbelief) for my main character's (Etrit) internal conflict for about 2 months. I refused to start writing my book without knowing that I feel comfortable with my character's internal conflict and that it fits well with my side characters.
I've re-watched Abbie's "What's the Difference between Fear and Misbelief?" video several times. She explains really well. I've had to physically take down notes of the examples she uses.
It wasn't until today that I found the internal conflict that I wanted. I must've rewritten his internal conflict about 5 times (while also writing my side characters' internal conflicts). That's why I was trying to have Etrit and my side characters fit together. And a theme that I wanted to say.
I find it best for myself to figure things out in this order: Desire, Fear, Misbelief, Theme.
Just so you know, I plan to introduce one of my side characters this Sunday. I'm excited to introduce her. I'm excited to introduce all of them really. I love all of them. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I know Etrit is my baby.

Guess what just came in the mail??!! She's one of my fave writer YouTubers and she's an indie author! So support indie authors! Also can we talk about how much I love this cover? It's so good! And I love how the paper cover feels in my hands. I love paperback books like that. It's just. so. satisfying.
Anyway so I'll be staying up later than usual reading this tonight.

#1000wordsofsummer, day 2 (02/06/24)
1000 words of summer, for anybody who doesn’t know it, is a writing challenge founded and run by a novelist named Jami Attenberg. It involves writing 1000 words a day for the first two weeks of June.
I’m going to be posting about each day of the challenge, with my own work in the spotlight on odd days and a recommendation for something that helps me write on even days.
Today’s Recommendation
Abbie Emmons’ immersive writing session videos on YouTube are super fun! so far I have especially enjoyed the “fantasy castle” one.
youtube
Update
Fight Princesses and Rescue Dragons is 1312 words longer.
The bottom line
Veel success and good luck to everyone taking part in 1000 words 2024! Over the next two weeks I’m going to try to find anybody else who’s posting on Tumblr about this and cheer you on.
In the meantime, you’ve got this, you’re doing great.

This is the writing sprint video I like to use during my writing sessions. It’s split into four parts that last thirty minutes each; twenty-five minutes of writing and a five minute break. I find it helps to keep me focused and to make myself keep going when I can see I only have to do it for X amount of minutes before I can take a break
