Growling some more at you while you reattach it and he lifts his hand with the little thing he’d removed to touch the back of his helm.

• Fiddling with your primitive tech and chirping softly at him while he syncs the partially decoded language file, he shudders slightly as it integrates. “-twenty percent already? That can’t be right,” you’re mumbling as you swipe a gloved finger on your display. Helmet bent over the tiny screen, you make a soft noise. “How bad a way to go is suffocation?” Suffocation? Reaching out a servo, he hooks it around you and turns you. “Whoa, hey. Easy big guy.” Optics narrowing at the tank on the back of your suit, he vents. What exactly are you breathing?

• “What gasses are you breathing?” He asks and you freeze. Because he asked. In actual words instead of just growling at you. Gaping up at him, you’re silent. “Can you understand me, little one?” Reaching out he taps your oxygen tank and you stumble away, afraid he’s going to damage it without meaning to. How is he speaking your language? Is that what he wanted your console for? To learn your language?

• “I can understand you,” you say, shadowy features upturned to stare at him. “I need air, I’m running out. My tank might have a leak.” Rumbling softly, he knows the translation files are rough at best. Needing more data from you, from interacting with you to be complete. Needs you to keep talking. “Really wish I’d paid more attention in my science classes. Maybe if I could remember the molecule I could draw it.” Watches you lift your little hands, laying them on your helmet. Scared and alone in a strange place. Maybe one of his other Primes can help figure out your air?

• “Don’t worry, little one. You won’t suffocate,” he says and you want to believe him. Need to. Because you have much less oxygen than you’d initially thought. It was never meant to last long, though. You weren’t supposed to be on this side of the gate for more than five minutes tops. The suits meant to withstand radiation and hostile environments. For a short period of time. But there wasn’t supposed to be giant, sentient alien life on the other side either. Air, water, and food. If you can’t get access to all three, you’re dead.

Philosophy - aims to ascertain basic existentialist truths of the world around us.

The term comes from “philosophia,” a word that has Greek and Latin origins.

Philosophers examine the nature of reality by posing philosophical questions or problems that they then attempt to solve through critical thinking.

Branches of Philosophy

Much of the value of philosophy lies in the specialization and categorization of philosophical questions that cannot be easily answered with empirical data or scientific knowledge.

Scholars organize such questions into different branches of thought, although there are perhaps as many ways of categorizing the different branches as there are scholars.

Here are just 3 of the potentially dozens of branches of philosophy:

Epistemology: Also called the theory of knowledge, this analytic philosophy studies the scope, validity, and extent of human knowledge—in other words, concepts surrounding how we can confirm what we think we know is true. Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason is an example of epistemology. In this work, Kant disagrees with philosopher David Hume, that our experiences and perceptions of things are subjective—therefore, our knowledge of things is not universal. Epistemology overlaps with many other branches of philosophy since human knowledge is relevant in other areas, such as the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mind.

Ethics: The moral philosophy of ethics is one of the oldest and broadest branches of philosophy. Ethics works to debate values of good and evil and questions where human actions fall on that spectrum. The ancient Greeks struggled with these questions as they developed their societies along two schools of thought—Stoicism and Epicureanism. Although these two schools, established in 300 BC, shared several tenets, they differed in describing the best way to live. Stoics believed that living a just and virtuous life was paramount, while Epicureans believed the search for pleasure should be the highest priority. Metaphysics often encompasses or overlaps with the philosophy of science—for example, as scientists grapple with questions related to humanity’s literal and figurative place in the universe.

Historical Figures of Eastern Philosophy

Laozi (born circa 570 BCE): The historical existence of Laozi, or Lao Tzu, is disputed, but some believe the Chinese philosopher is the author of the Tao Te Ching, a manuscript central to the philosophical religion known as Daoism (or Taoism). Ancient Greek philosophers established western philosophy as early as the sixth century BCE. Here are a handful of Greek philosophy figures who created theoretical foundations and frameworks that future generations could use to question their own complex societies:

Socrates (470–399 BCE): The Athenian philosopher Socrates is credited as the founding father of western philosophy and the Socratic method—a form of questioning that scholars in multiple areas of philosophy use to pinpoint shortcomings in logic or beliefs. His teachings were never published but lived on through the work of his student, Plato.

Plato (428/427–348/347 BCE): An influential thinker of the classical Greek period, Plato is famous for his theory of forms, which questions the connection between our minds and reality. Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831): German philosopher Georg Hegel is best known for his metaphysical concept known as idealism. The concept dictates that the perceptions of a self-conscious mind result in the most accurate interpretations of concrete objects. His work had a dramatic impact on western philosophy in the twentieth century and influenced the works of philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Nietzsche.

On TDOV, a historian’s perspective on the transphobic nonsense some people spout about bones, burials and gender.

We have been finding burials of gender divergent folk and folk outside the binary since we started any form of organised study of archaeology. The 18th and 19th century European and European-derived archaeologists who didn’t recognise that were the ignorant ones, assuming their definitions of gender were “universal”. Including within the binary; their definitions were deeply reductionist and deeply inaccurate, failing to recognise that even societies they actively claimed some form of cultural descent from had very different definitions of what a “man” or “woman” was from theirs.

Notably, they came from a *very* colonialist society that was doing its best to destroy living cultures with fuller definitions of gender than it allowed. We are still living in a framework of repairing the damage they did in how we understand past cultures, and modern media is frequently very unhelpful on how it reports on discoveries and interpretations, erasing or flattening the huge element of interpretation and uncertainty involved even with the exciting level of data that new techniques can give us on any given site.

Anyone who takes even a cursory look into bioarchaeology will find out that “sexing” bones - which every modern archaeologist knows is at best one element in gendering the person they belonged to - is *incredibly* fucking difficult. A lot of the techniques for it involve measuring proportions of anatomical features that may well not be present - it’s rare for a specimen to be intact. And, frankly - humans are a spectrum in every physical feature. Height, weight, bone density, width of shoulders and pelvis etc etc. Cheaper and more widespread DNA testing is slowly making more people realise that chromosomes aren’t the final word they were told in first year high school biology either. For the remains of people from some cultures, we have some written history to cross-reference archaeology with about the meanings of artefacts. In others, we don’t - and even when we do, half the time what we have is the interpretation of two lines from some dude from a different culture altogether, or from an aside in a religious tract, or a recipe book.

Almost every older specimen we have has been reinterpreted multiple times. Probably the oldest remains as yet found in the UK, from circa 31,000 BCE based on current best estimates, were known as “the Red Lady of Paviland” because they were dyed red with ochre, and the person who found them in 1832 decided from that fact and fact that there was jewellery found with them that they belonged to a female Roman-era sex worker. From around 200 years more work, and considerably more data, we now interpret them as having belonged to a male hunter-gatherer, likely from a nomadic or semi-nomadic people who frequently lived much closer to the coast than the place in Wales where the remains were found. We do not have the information about this person’s culture, how their culture viewed gender, the pronouns their language used and if they related to gender; this was minimum 20,000 years before and on the other side of the world from the oldest writing we have as yet found. We are putting data together and interpreting as best we can, with the awareness that there could be a discovery tomorrow that could utterly change that.

I’m sorry if this seems an obscure topic to address for TDOV, but I do know how this idea of “the bones don’t lie” has got into plenty of folks’ heads when they are having a bad time. So I wanted to address the fact that not only is it bawbins, the entire series of assumptions it posits is bawbins of the type that TERFs and transphobes, like racists, misogynists, and fascists in general, like to spew out there - that gender, or indeed race, is biological, fixed, and essential, that their understandings of it are “fact-based”, and that science is a series of fixed, immutable facts that are just lying there like stones on a beach.

And all of that is complete and utter bawbins.

Gender, and race, like all human frameworks of knowledge and understanding, are constructs - tools we use to understand a ridiculously complex and difficult world. They may *reference* objective facts, but are not in *themselves* facts. None of which means they aren’t incredibly meaningful or don’t have massive impacts on our experiences as humans. But they are mutable, ever-evolving, and incredibly open to constant interpretation and re-definition, and while your individual experience of them will be mediated by your culture, it’s also unique to you too.

No one else’s definition of your gender can *ever* be more accurate than yours. Because it is *yours*.

Most days you'd stand in the lab, comparing and accumulating data relevant to his research, taking care of any specimen, and cleaning

Most commonly, you were tasked with chemical waste disposal; each chemical was different, and each process was longer than the last

Today, however, Perceptor tasked you with sorting through the 'other' portfolio of research data

It was a list of all kinds of extras that were never finished, tasks galore.

It was also the perfect opportunity for you to work closely with him, since he was helping you comb through it

"What about the anti-anti-matter gun?"

"Anything with the word 'gun' is just Brainstorm trying to get me to do his projects for him. Dispose of it."

While he handled the physical box of 'other' projects, you were sifting through the online database

Thankfully your job was easier because you'd been so distracted watching him across from you and mulling over your plan that you wouldn't get anywhere otherwise

It is easier to get lost and lose sight of your ambitions when with others who don't have the same aspirations as yourself. Use your own time to sit down and work out what you want to achieve and quietly put in the effort to win.

It can be quite daunting to ask questions in lectures, so I prefer to ask my questions during times that aren't forced into a short time interval, such as tutorials, office hours, and other forms of learning support that your university/college provides. Ask questions based on your own conclusions, questions that challenge current rules and perspectives. Think deeper into your lessons and seek to make use of every bit of information.

##    How to find a good research topic?

It’s best to familiarize yourself with a discipline or topic as broadly as possible by looking beyond academia

Be enthusiastic, but not unrealistic. “Huh…?” 

Squinting your eyes as you leaned closer to the bright computer screen, it didn’t help that you were also sitting in complete darkness. “-I was, uh, accepted?” Your voice came out more as confusion than disbelief. “What? Did you even get a job interview with them?” Your friend’s muffled voice spoke through the phone speaker, her tone rather skeptical. 

“No,” You huffed under your breath as you repeatedly pressed the ‘refresh’ button on the keyboard. ‘Maybe it was some sort of accident? But why would they use my name?’ The thoughts swirled in your mind as the blank page loaded back up the unmistakably addressed “in your full government name” email. 

“I guess I’m now, uh, employed?”

You, a once brilliant student that had excelled in every task you did. The pride and joy of your parents, you worked so hard for their attention since birth. Every positive report card, a smile and hug.

 “Honey, we're so proud of you!” 

Every gold medal and award, more praises and head ruffles. 

“You are our pride and joy.”

Toothy grins, loving friends, scraped knees, ambition, sunshine, fresh grass, rain, thunderstorms, heavy, tired, tired, tired. 

A young star who shone too brightly had burnt out, crashing hard and fast into reality. 

Everything began to feel meaningless as you moved slowly through the thick of it all, your youth was supposed to be the best part of your life yet all you felt like a puppet lead on strings. Dancing till your feet bled, entertaining the masses.

By the time you finished high school, you had remembered the looks your parents had given you as they circled around you like a pack of hungry hyenas. Starved for more, when did it stop being your life and became theirs? You had told them that you wanted to take on some part-time work rather than head straight into university when reality was that you wanted to slowly disappear between the slips of time, becoming nothing. Maybe then people won’t have such high expectations of you or maybe you were just a waste of space like what your parents had said.

“Miss, we’re here.” The voice of the taxi driver had snapped you back into reality, losing your train of thoughts. You thanked him as you handed over the cash, unbuckling the overly-tight seatbelt and stepping out of the vehicle. The salty air of the ocean hit you almost instantly as you looked up at the large building standing tall in front of you. Using one arm to shield your eyes from the bright sun rays as you read the large letters across the building. ‘The State of Science: BLUE LOCK’.

God knows how you landed this job, without any experience nor interview. But the strange man on the phone assured you that you would be the perfect fit for this job as he had looked into your background (creep?!) and gathered some personal data of yours (is this a crime?).

After much persuasion from your friend, jokingly calling you a NEET and saying you spend way too much time inside and that you have nothing to lose if you went. If you didn’t like the job then you could always quit, right?

“Right.” You mutter softly as you nervously fiddled with the strap of your bag, heavy from all your personal belongings. The man on the phone had requested you to bring some with you as a part of the job required you to stay over in the facilities for a couple of nights. Whatever it was.

Stepping through the automatic glass doors, you are immediately greeted by security guards. Handing over your bag as you stiffly hold out your arms, letting the guard give you a thural pat down. It wasn’t too surprising that they had such tight security measures as Blue Lock has become one of the leading science research departments across the world. 

What had caught you off guard was the over fifty page NDA booklet placed in front of you as you were led into the next room. The woman, Anri, she introduced herself as, guided you through the process. ‘Anri is so lovely’, you thought as she showed you to your room in the facility after all the paperwork. By the looks of it, you two seemed around similar ages too. Maybe this whole thing isn’t so bad.

“Once you’re done unpacking, I’ll take you to Ego. He will show you what you will be doing.” Anri cheerfully explained as she flickered through the papers in her clipboard. You smiled reluctantly as the name Ego reached your ears. 

 The man, though you hadn’t even met him in person, already left a sour impression after the hour long phone calls and exchanged emails with him. He’s thoroughly convinced that you would be the perfect candidate for this ‘role’, whatever it is and he certainly made it very clear with the bombardment of texts when you accidentally missed another call.

“I think I’m ready.” You said as you placed your bag down by the foot of the bed, un-packing can come later, you thought. The nerves of this unknown job was killing you, maybe mixed in with a bit of excitement too. It had been awhile since you properly interacted with people other than your close friends.

 “Follow me.” Anri’s voice was already fading down the hall, you had to jog a little to catch up with the quick-paced woman.

It seemed to take forever before the both of you reached a pristine white metal door. You felt a bead of sweat trickle down the side of your face. Before this, you were led by Anri through one elevator going down by almost 50 levels? You had lost count when you were then taken through a long hallway, followed by twists and turns before landing in front of another elevator; going down again. 

It almost felt illegal for you to even breathe in this building, what kind of sci-fi movie did you just land in? You casted a quick nervous glance at Anri beside you, who looked as relaxed as ever. A small smile resting on her lips as she pressed a thumb onto the keypad beside the large door.

The loud ‘DING’ that followed almost made you jump out of your skin as the door slid open smoothly. “C’mon, you’re gonna love this!’’ Anri assured as she walked in, casting you an expecting look.

If your jaw could hit the floor, it would have. As you stepped into the large room you were met with large monitors, tables scattered with papers, tubes and beakers. There were a few small tanks and cages filled with strange critters that you couldn’t name even if a gun was held to your head. What really caught your attention was behind all the scientific madness, leading up a small step of stairs to a viewing platform. The whole back wall was replaced by thick glass. The water behind the glass was murky, it wasn’t blue like the tanks of water you saw at the aquariums when you were little. The lights beneath the tank casted the whole room a deep forest shade of green, just like the water. You could see shadows of fishes swimming around in there yet through the algae floating around and tall plants threading through the waters peacefully, it was hard to tell what they were. The scene in front of you unknowingly filled you with tranquility, the jumping nerves you felt just mere seconds ago lost among the slow moving waters.

“Pretty neat, isn’t it?” The sudden booming voice definitely made you jump (and yelp, a little) as a shadow casted over your face, looking up you see a tall slender silhouette of a man as he stood proudly in front of the tank. “Ah, Ego this is-” Anri was abruptly cut off by a slim finger pushed to her face as the tall man took mere seconds to get down the steps, with long strides. Stopping right in front of you. “Shut up Anri, I know who she is.” The man spat, now that he was closer you could actually make out his facial features in the dark room. His large beady black eyes hid behind a pair of thick black framed glasses, yet they couldn’t hide his lack of sleep with the heavy eyebags beneath his stare. His face was pulled into a large almost comical frown as he stared down at you. “Welcome fresh meat.” He finally said after seemingly analysing you on the spot. 

“Um, thank you?” You raised a brow at the strange nickname but still responded. Without wasting a second, the man turned on his heels. “Follow.” He ordered as he made his way through the tables to the side of the room, with a sweep of a card, a small side door that you would’ve never noticed opened. You quickly followed after him, looking back at Anri to see if she was following but she was already head deep in reading something on her Ipad. You felt your heart speeding up a little again because of the jumping nerves as you followed Ego up a narrow set of stairs. 

Through pushing open the metal slab at the very top of stairs, almost like opening the small space leading to a dusty attic. You were met with an open room, roof and walls lined with heavy set silver bars. You stepped out on the platform, behind the tall man. 

“Woah.” A small gasp left your lips as you set your eyes on the scene in front of you. The stairs led the both of you to the very top of the large tank. Growths of lily pads and other types of aquatic plants scattered across the surface of the waters. A large tree stretched out from within the bog, you definitely wouldn't have noticed it from looking below the murky waters. If it weren’t for the strange metal cage bars this tank was encased in, you would have thought this place was painted straight from a medieval fairy tail.

“Well this place is still a bit of a work in progress, we’re trying to make it more homely.” Ego started, turning to look at you. “From today, you will be taking care of this place and the owner of this home.” He stated simply, gesturing to the swamp of water.

You furrowed your browns in confusion, “The owner? Of which home?” You asked, only to receive a large grin in response from Ego. “You will meet Rin soon enough, he’s a bit shy. He only really comes out at night but you don’t need to worry too much. As long as you do your job, everything will be fine.”

“Is Rin one of those creatures? Like from below in those tanks?” You ask, more confused at the explanation. Ego casted you a strange look before smirking again, “Yep. Something like that.”

You tugged at your new uniform, checking your reflection in the mirror. A plain set of white overalls, the BlueLock logo etched into the right breast pocket. You wore your striped long sleeve shirt underneath as well as your slightly worn down DocMartins. It didn’t look half bad! It was simple but you felt comfortable enough. 

The door to the locker room pushed open behind you causing you to turn, a freckled face peaked in. “Ah hello you must be new as well!” The young man spoke politely with a smile, he was wearing the same uniform as you. Ginger hair peaked out from beneath the matching white cap he was wearing. “Yes I am.” You introduced yourself, extending a hand to shake. 

“I’m Regan. Just started today as well. Anri told me to meet you here.” He said, grabbing your hand. “We should head there soon, ya nervous?” Regan grinned as he fixed his cap in the mirror. “A little, not gonna lie. The whole thing has been a little bit of a mystery to me.” You responded and Regan chuckled as he nodded. “Right? I still don’t really know what we have to do exactly but I’m glad I have you so we can figure this out together.” He gave your shoulder a little playful nudge and you laughed a little. This guy might be a little overly-friendly but you were also glad you have someone else to work with during this night shift.

 “Ugh this stuff stinks.” Regan muffled through his palm pressed to his face as he picked up the bucket filled with slush. “I know, let’s hurry.” You huffed back, covering your own nose as you picked up a bucket. Looking down, the content of the bucket looked to be a mixture of dead fish and other sorts of mystery meats? You gagged internally. The instruction left by Ego was to take the feed to this RIN creature. Simple enough, right?

The two of you made your way through the maze of a building (might have gotten lost a few times), finally found your way back to the big tank. 

“This place is so dope, man.” Regan said as he picked up a test tube from one of the desks, bringing it up to his face. You casted him a quick glance before scanning the keycard like the way you saw Ego did. The small door unlocked and slid open. Bless Regan, he seemed like a great guy, but from the past half an hour of knowing him. He’s almost talked your ears off. You suppose knowing about Regan’s whole bloodline and his family drama instead of your own inner monologue filling the silence was better in the seemingly empty building. 

“C’mon Regan.” You called out as you began climbing up the staircase with the bucket, careful not to disturb it too much with your movements. You’d rather not deal with that stench clinging to you for the rest of the evening. “Coming!” Regan’s loud voice echoed behind you, followed by his footsteps clanking against the metal staircase.

Finding your way back to the top of the tank, you set the bucket down. Despite the smelly bucket next to you, the large room smelt of fresh grassy woodland. It was hard to describe, slightly earthy? Was there also a hint of floral from the blooming lilies? The plants of the man-made swamp really made up for the dull exterior. 

‘ Flomp! ’ 

You watched as Regan poured the slimy content of his bucket into the water, the wet sounds reaching your ears making you scowl in disgust. Regan caught your gaze and frowned, “What? Isn’t that what we’re supposed to do? Feed this Ren thing?” He huffed, taking a step closer to the edge of the platform before getting on his knees and peering into the dark water. “What is this thing anyways, have you even seen it yet?” Regan’s contorted face asked from the reflection of the rippling waters.

You frowned, taking a step towards the ginger. “No I have not and I wouldn’t get so close. Ego said not to-” You were cut off by the man sticking his whole arm into the water, swishing it around. “Do that…” You deadpanned. 

“It’s fine.” Regan rolled his eyes, “It’s probably a small sort of small extinct fish that they are trying to keep-” It happened so fast, a long muscular pair of arms reached out from beneath Regan and dragged the man by the collar of his shirt and into the murky water. It took you a few seconds to process what you had just witnessed before you screeched out Regan’s name, rushing to the edge of the platform. The waters were still for a moment before Regan’s pale arms splashed about the surface, his freckled face emerging for a moment as he spat out a mouthful of water. His panicked eyes met yours, “Can’t- SWIM!” He gasped, before disappearing below again.

Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuck.

The alarms in your head were going haywire, should you call Ego? Anri? What should you do?

Stupid fucking Regan.

You took in a deep breath before leaping off the edge, the cold water hit your warm skin like a slap. You dove deeper beneath the waters, looking for the familiar head of red. Yet it was so hard to see through the swirls of green, everything was dark and shadowy. You fought hard to keep your eyes open as you pushed yourself further into the tank with your arms, looking around frantically.

From the corner of your eye you finally caught a glimpse of pale skin through the shadowy water, without hesitation you reached out and grabbed the arm. Pulling hard as you kicked your legs, turning to pull the both of you to the surface.

Yet as much as you kicked, you felt like you were going nowhere. 

‘Why is this bastard so damn heavy? ’ The thought crossed your mind as you turned your body to face him, hoping that using both of your arms might help a little more. 

You felt your whole body freeze as you finally met eyes with a pair of sharp emerald eyes. 

Those are not Regan’s eyes!

Though the water was murky, those cat-like eyes were clear as day. They almost seemed to glow against the dark as they stared deeply into your own wide terrified ones. Your grip on the creature’s arm never loosened, you couldn’t even answer yourself why. 

Maybe it was the shock? The creature, no, man? His face was the most ethereal thing you’ve ever laid eyes on, his pale lips were pressed in a thin line. His face was small, almost feminine like with the especially long eye-lashes that framed those beautiful emeralds that sat perfectly between his slim nose, his pupils were animalistic, sharp black slits watching your every move carfully. His inky hair blended into the waters, flowing gracefully around him.

Without thinking, your free hand slowly reached out towards the creature. Ever so carefully cupping his cheek. He had watched you the whole time, sharp eyes drifting from your face to your hand before looking back at you again. He didn’t respond in any way as he felt your warm touch, face remained blank as he observed your curious gaze.

Time seemed to stand still as the two of you shared this strangely intimate moment. All of your worries and thoughts disappeared at this moment, just nothing. Like what you had always hoped for, to just exist so simply. How could someone look like this? So hauntingly beautiful, you couldn’t breathe. What was this darkness? You had always had a fear of the dark, the unknown yet how could this feel so comforting? You couldn’t breathe. Everything was so quiet, you couldn’t feel the cold water nipping at your skin anymore.

Blackspots began appearing around your vision, you hadn’t even realised that you were running dangerously low on oxygen before you let out a gasp. Air bubbles clouded your vision, that gorgeous face disappearing among them.

No, I want to see you again!

Everything fades to black.

6. if you work, what's your profession?

i write internal software documentation which means it's architectural, high-level design stuff... not so much code-specific, but the reasoning behind why software components are organized the way they are. it's not very fun, mostly mind-melting... i work closely w engineers and it's kind of a toss-up whether they'll be nice/patient or think i'm stupid lol

but my brain now contains so many company secrets :^) if you ever have any questions about data storage/virtualization i can possibly help lol

7. if you could have any job you wish, what would you have?

funny story—i applied for grad school, and i've been accepted to an english m.a. program that starts this fall!!! 🥹 we'll see where i go w that, but i'll likely enter education!

uhh i suppose BG3 LOL i beat honor mode twice! 🎉 (i'm still trying to figure out how DA works 🤔 DA2 hard mode is chill idk if i'd ever do nightmare tho 😬)

ok it's not rly a "hate" thing but it does irk me when i see fandom claims/arguments that don't cite specific quotes/screenshots/instances lol (the english major in me activates and i am consumed by the thought "🚨‼️ where do you see this in the text 👁️👁️🫵" LOL)

the grief 😂🖐️ it creeps up on me! almost cried in my cubicle multiple times this week. haha.

receiving is probably words of affirmation? giving is probably gifts, i like making silly things for my bestie (eg. fenris keychain lol) and finding weird stickers for my brother 🤡

oh man, i was so bad at science, especially biology/chemistry... i could scrape by in physics bc i was decent at math, but it was still awful...

worst...??? according to my last annual review, i need to be more confident in the workplace LOL 💀 + sometimes i let my anxiety get the better of me... i think that's just a lifelong struggle thing though, but i know i can improve to be a better friend and such 💪

best... multiple reviews from mom-aged women say that i am a "nice" and "sweet" person so hopefully at least that means i can leave a good first impression haha

17. if you could change any detail of your life right now, what would it be?

i'm not a huge fan of what-if-ing personally, but i do wish i were on vacation 😆

18. if you could travel in time, who would you like to meet?

i'm currently very curious about my paternal grandparents... it's hard for me to conceptualize why they got married... and how my dad grew up... i guess i would want to witness some of that??

hi! i'm shy as hell usually but trying to branch out cuz i saw u reblog that post abt asks. do u have any recs on where to start for a beginner coder (who has virtually no free time)? i feel like the landscape is so vast and overwhelming.

I think the best thing I've learned throughout my coding journey is that you must first pick a field that interests you. Computer Science is a VAST world, once you pick a field, you must really commit to it. For example, maybe data science interests you. You look up the requirements to be a date scientist. I don't have in-depth knowledge on it, but I do know that you need good knowledge about python and some of its modules like numpy, matplotlib etc. So you start learning the basics, and then move on to the modules. The key is to find what you love, then find what you need in order to pursue it.

For a kickstart I'd recommend w3schools — it's a really good site that has so many tutorials on various languages.

I was also a person that had no free time at all to focus on my learning. But then I realised that you must make time if you want to work on something with dedication. So now I devote Sunday afternoons to learning and working on my projects, and I try to stick to it as much as possible, except for when I have uni exams or any submissions lol

I really don't have any time or respect for people who call themselves marine mammal scientists while acting as lobbyists and continuously misleading the general public about marine mammal welfare.

Animal welfare is a relatively new scientific field - especially in cetaceans. It's really only in the last few decades that we've been actively studying and determining welfare parameters in dolphins and whales.

That said, we have scientists like Dr. Isabella Clegg, Dr. Jason Bruck, Dr. Heather Hill, Dr. Kelly Jaakkola, Dr. Kathleen Dudzinski, Dr. Fabienne Delfour and many other incredible scientists, research fellows and facilities contributing amazing welfare data.

Not to mention the fantastic global Cetacean Welfare Study

We're learning how to study welfare, what good welfare and bad welfare looks like, what affects welfare the most, monitoring welfare acoustically, comparing parameters to wild animals, what is actually the best habitat for these animals and so much more.

Yet you have people like Dr. Naomi Rose, Dr. Lori Marino and Dr. Ingrid Visser who claim that "the science is settled" on cetacean welfare. That we don't need to do anymore research, show's over, nothing to see here. Tank bad, sanctuary good, don't look at over there at the actual research, trust us - we're the scientists.

That's why I get so frustrated when I see people uncritically use these scientist's sources. Or any sort of anti cap media who take their word as gospel, regurgitate Blackfish talking points and deliberately mislead with emotive, anthropomorphic language.

I can't understand why, when presented with the notion that these animals may not be suffering, that the response is anger.

Why? When I realised that the orcas at SeaWorld were living a much better life than what was portrayed in Blackfish I felt relief! I was happy to see the high energy enrichment and training session videos.

I was happy when I travelled all the way to Orlando from Australia and spent hours and hours at SeaWorld at the underwater viewing area. I asked questions and I watched the orcas rest, play and engage in sessions. I was excited about the idea of being apart of this world and getting to work with animals using positive reinforcement and prioritising welfare.

Little did I know that only in a few years I'd be networking with those amazing welfare scientists and working with dolphins! I don't expect others to have the same journey I did, but I hope some of what I post can make a difference in changing how people perceive cetacean welfare.

There's a lot more we need to learn and study but a lot of the current data is pointing to positive/neutral welfare states in cetaceans in human care. I hope more will be published on orcas - a lot of the data is in bottlenose dolphins (which is probably why lobbyists aren't targeting them in legislation as much anymore).

Cetacean welfare is in no way a settled science, so be very wary of sources that claim it is or make uncritical claims about "captivity".

"Over The City" info post!

Guess what has a name finally! So this post is an intro to not only the 'reader' character I've made for my fic I'm currently working on. But also just a quick look at what it will contain since there does need to be a content warning should you choose to read. This post won't spoil too much and I was inspired by @stellaspectral's post for her story "Sun Killer", which I love!

The plot revolves around the reader insert character Seraphina Daniels, a cisgender bisexual female, and it will touch on her family and backstory as the story goes. While I will not get into the details of what happened to her, here or in the fic during her last 2 years of High School, there will be a reference to past non-con/assault as well as the lose of a family member.

Now that I have my biggest content warning out of the way! Sera starts the story trying to gather as much info as she can on her, kinda but not really BF, that she is only dating to try and get him busted. How ever as she learns that he has crazy connections the plan starts to look nebulous. That is until she realizes there is a certain team of vigilantes also investigating him after they accidentally keep her from getting caught allowing her to get away with the data she stole. So Sera then makes it her mission to find the mutants that got her out of that sticky spot in order to get them the info she had been keeping in order to avoid giving it to the wrong person. [She knows who the Turtles are, kinda, due to the fact that her family moved to NYC shortly before The Krang attack. BAD TIMING!]

Now this will be Reader X Raph but it is gonna be a slow burn because I love a good slow burn! [Imagine two dum-dums who like each other, but they are dum-dums. You're Honor you don't understand these are my emotional support idiots.] Now these two aren't the only ships and as of right now I mostly have Capril and Leoichi and the side ships but I know I will include Warren and Hypno because I love Rys Darby so... Hypno my beloved! That being said there will be some explicit content in later chapters and I will be using the 'afreakingdork' method of marking the title of the chapter with an *.

Now I will be playing a game with the chapter titles since I listen to music for inspo like all the time and the chapter titles will be lyrics from the song that inspired it in the original language. In the author note before each chapter I will provide full lyric, if I cut it down which some are, and a translation if the title isn't in English. I guess I wanna see if anyone recognizes the songs I use as a little extra thing people can engage in.

Now I will get into a few more spoilers, mostly about Sera. So her family originally was her and her brother Kellan with their parents Tormond and Marion Daniels. [Marion's maiden name is Valentin] Her mother's side of the family is pretty fucking big and Valentin Holdings is a fucking giant company so Marion's family doesn't look to favorably on Tormond. Despite everything the 4 of them all got along fairly well when the kids were younger since they moved around alot before settling in NYC due to Tormond's business being established here. [The Daniels Corporation, a medical technology company] However, Sera's brother dies before the start of the story due to a super weird illness, that I am still working through the science on, which leads to the state of the family during the start of the story.

Sera does deal with being neurodivergent with her autism and ADHD which isn't helped by the fact that she has CPTSD and mostly self soothes because she never shared anything that happened to her with her parents. She only ever told her brother and he is gone now. [Kellan was 2 years older than her when he died]

Sera lives in a residential building in Manhattan that her dad slowly bought up in order to bring the best of the graduating medical students and engineers from all over the country by giving them housing. [He is technically building a safe building to keep his family safe since he is having a bad time with his oldest being sick.] Eventually he bought the whole building and everyone that lives and works there are technically his employees.

Now I do have a funny link between Sera and Kendra because they dated in the past and had a bad break up! Kendra will show up in the story pretty early on so I'm very very excited for that chapter(s). [I am slowly warming up to her the more I think about her chapter] Sera love taking photos and sketching but has a lot of art supplies due to her being rather introverted. [I have so much paint and other supplies it's nuts so...]

Well now that I have a perspective pinned down I can really start writing, since I'm like 35 chapters into my outline. I can't wait!
