Why do you think Joshua Williamson gets so much hate as a comics writer ? I feel like he's such a divisive writer with some people having actual seething contempt for his works, but aside from writing some not so stellar stories, what did he do to earn the hatred that he seems to get ?

It’s a mix of seething envy that he got the big break and their favs didn’t + a little of this:

Now Williamson has written some pretty shitty books, no one is claiming otherwise. Dark Crisis sucked (aside from the Jon Kent portions which ruled). Deathstroke, Inc sucked. Justice League Incarnate was mediocre. Knight Terrors is apparently mediocre (aside from his Superman tie-ins which I enjoyed, I’m not reading it). He’s not a good event writer, he doesn’t understand high-level Morrison concepts, and he can be the worst kind of fanboy - bringing back Pariah and the Infinite multiverse like anyone cared, talking up the Titans, JSA, and importance of legacy while failing to do anything with any of those - but he’s written plenty of great stuff too. He’s one of two writers who demonstrated the potential of Jon as Superman in Future State JL and Dark Crisis.

Something about Superman brings out the best in Williamson. His Robin book was the most enjoyable use of Damian since Tomasi/Gleason B&R. His Superman book is one of my favorite Big 2 books right now period. He’s had great success in the indie sphere with Birthright and Dark Ride. There’s a reason he got to where he is, as much as some people would rather it was someone else.

At least one guy who hates Williamson was out shilling every garbage book that Steve Orlando put out as the greatest thing ever, and how DARE DC not put the guy who wrote a boring CW synergy Supergirl book on Superman proper. Same people screaming about Shush like it murdered their mother are slobbering over Rek-Rap like that character isn’t just as fucking stupid. I can’t take their hate for Williamson seriously. They just irrationally hate the man, if it was Orlando or Ewing’s name on the main Superman book right now they’d be all over it (and Williamson Superman easily laps X-Men Red or Defenders for me). Same people who defend Zeb Wells ASM would be tearing it to shreds if Williamson’s name was on the cover.

Suppose it’s hypocritical for me to judge them too harshly since I’ve made no secret that I detest Taylor’s handling of Superman and the Super Mythos. But I still am able to enjoy some of Taylor’s work! And I don’t act like Taylor is a bad person, which I feel some of Williamson’s haters are dangerously close to doing. Williamson does good work (at the Big 2 anyway) when he’s writing character focused action stories with an eye towards acknowledging continuity. That’s where he shines and where I most enjoy his work. At worst he writes boring mediocre stories that don’t live up to their potential, but are easily forgotten. Anyone who acts like that makes him the worst writer at the Big 2 currently is a hyperbolic idiot I can’t take seriously. Al Ewing, Ram V, Jonathan Hickman, even Grant Morrison or Mark Waid have been guilty of that sin.

Hot on the Heels of the Nightwing 2022 Annual Reveal of Heartless, It's Time to Gather all the Seeds in Son of Kal-El!!

Without spoiling the annual, the identity of Heartless was seeded in Nightwing #78, Tom's first issue on the run. I've already written an essay attempting to prove something is going to drop and bring Jon back to being a kid that is no longer entirely accurate to what I feel is coming, but just for posterity, here's a list of things that could be referencing other bits of information throughout the run.

Superman: Son of Kal-El #1, Jon is born in the Fortress of Solitude

Action Comics #976 (Superman Reborn), Jonathan Samuel Kent is born in the Fortress of Solitude

Superboy (2011) #19 , Jonathan Lane Kent born in the Fortress of Solitude

2. Superman Son of Kal-El #2, Jon's new identity Finn Conners where Jon puts on a bad blonde wig. "Finn" is an Irish name meaning "fair." Connors is also Irish.

Teen Titans (2011) #23, Cassie asks to call Kon "Conner" before going in for a kiss

3. Superman Son of Kal-El #2, no parties with Damian at the Fortress.

Superman & Robin Special, a party with Damian at the Fortress. Jon and Damian beat up Nazis. They also find an alien who rapidly ages before dividing and leaving.

Legion of Super-Heroes (2019) #3, Damian is rumored to become akin to Adolf Hitler.

Shadow War Omega, Damian: "Heroes don't kill!"

4. Superman, Son of Kal-El #4, Jon reminisces about visiting his grandparents as a toddler. As far as we were shown in Superman and Action Comics during Rebirth, this never happened.

Doomsday Clock #12 (Dec '19), Jon and Martha Kent are reintroduced despite not being present since Flashpoint. Jon is not present for this story aside from a single mention in an earlier issue. This combined with Superman Reborn could explain the panels in SoKE, but that's kinda lame if you ask me especially if they were really about to push Jon into the role of Superman soon after this.

Superboy (2011) #19, Jon Lane Kent falls deathly ill just before the age of 4. Notice the choice of white is consistent between this panel and the ones in SoKE. Also notice the farmhouse in the background. Is this what Jon is remembering?

5. Superman Son of Kal-El #4, backstories of The Aerie and Wink retconned to have been caused by Bendix

Suicide Squad (2019) #8, The Aerie reveals their backstory and The Post-Human Project to be a faceless evil. This change in SoKE #4 causes Jay and Aerie to share more than a few similarities, and they share a creator. Both runs were written by Tom Taylor.

Superman Son of Kal-El #6, Jay was Gamorran First Family

Suicide Squad (2019) #10, The Aerie’s mother is a deposed president as well

Superman (2018) #6, Jon returns to Earth 7 years older after 5 years of abuse and only 3 weeks have passed

Action Comics Annual #12, Chris Kent ages rapidly in the Phantom Zone. Note how these text boxes describe a similar description to what happened to Jon in that Earth-3 volcano.

Tom Taylor has also commented on famously poorly-received storylines in Son of Kal-El and Nightwing, namely Event Leviathan and both Devin Grayson and Scott Lobdell's runs on Nightwing.

8. Superman Son of Kal-El #12, Henry Bendix calls Jon an "abomination" for the first time

Superboy (2011) #6, Kara gives the Superboy the name Kon-El, which translates from Kryptonese as "Abomination in the House of El"

Superboy (2011) #33, Kon 2 is reborn in the mind of Jon Lane after dying in the Superman event Krypton Returns just months before this was published.

Either of these last two issues could also explain how Kon 2 would have the memories of Jon Lane Kent or the memories of the people the psychic (and psychotic) Jon would have been in contact with. Kon 2 is shown images of Krypton as Kara remembers them through touch in Superboy #6 as well as learning to speak and understand Kryptonese.

(September 24th - September 30th)

Lots of exciting things going on this past week. Was able to head out to an apple orchard to get some good eats and generally ring in the fall festive season. I have a feeling the apple cider doughnuts, peanut butter fudge, and pumpkin cake I picked up are not going to last long.

I also ran the first meeting of my work library's anime club, which had a fairly decent turnout. The teens were enthusiastic, ate up all the snacks, and had fairly good suggestions as to how to better structure the club. Now I have to think of some more games/activities for them just so we're not just watching stuff. I was thinking of things like Taboo (describe the anime without using words from the title), cooperative model/figurine building, various crafts, etc. Naturally they were a little bummed that we couldn't watch stuff like Chainsaw Man, Attack on Titan, Tokyo Ghoul, since the teen space is a PG 13 space and those shows are WAY too gory. Hopefully I can find/rec some stuff that's similar but a little toned down.

The corridor inside Black Gate that led to the various cells was not welcoming, it was freezing cold and very creepy, it didn't make you comfortable at all, especially because of the stares of the prisoners and the reasons they were in there.

That's why Y/n Wayne's pace was fast but not too fast, just enough to be able to get to the cell she needed and leave as quickly as possible without her father, Bruce Wayne, finding out about her or discovering the person or rather the reason they were there who was Jason Todd, the Robin who was helping Batman at the time.

Jason was against her coming with him but she managed to persuade him by accompanying him in the car and even inside, staying to observe the conversation not expecting at all that Jonathan Crane, aka the Scarecrow, would make an attempt to flirt with her receiving in response only an amused and slightly sour smile of discomfort.

If she was surprised Jason was even more, not only surprised but there was a negative feeling that he felt like a burning in his stomach and an anger that was all too familiar, again that emotion he so hated 'jealousy' but this time felt much more intense than when it came to Dick and the stuff between Robin and Batman.

When they got out of prison Y/n made an attempt to talk to him more than once only receiving grunts or cold, short answers as replies.

It was like this for a while, Jason had been concentrating only on himself still thinking about why he was so jealous of that little flirt attempt, finding himself later, on the very night it was supposed to be his death, in front of Y/n after he had spoken to Bruce on the phone.

He wanted to ignore her and do what he had to do but he couldn't, she kept asking questions apologising for something she didn't even know about, trying to re-establish the relationship between them which didn't happen; the young Robin lost his patience turning around to yell at her why he had ignored her and been so cold "Because I fucking love you, Y/n!".

The two looked at each other for a moment, there was silence now, Jason made to walk over to his Robin's suit and apologise to her but Y/n was quicker, she grabbed his face and connected their lips in a kiss that turned into a make out session that prevented Jason from going out that day and die.
