2024: A Re-Entry to Fandom

I guess this is a thing? (Oh shit this brackets bit was written at the end and I appear to have emotionally vomited an essay. Sorry ‘bout that.)

In late 2023 I experienced a personal tragedy and retreated to where I had always found comfort: books.

I read a series that had been recommended to me before, but I hadn’t had time to read it - The Simon Snow Trilogy by @rainbowrowell and it awoke a dormant-but-never-forgotten love of fanfiction in me.

In my teens and early 20s I wrote a lot of fan fiction on the ol’ FF net, all of it of atrocious quality I’m certain, which is why I haven’t tried to rediscover that account.

Instead I found AO3, and restarted regularly writing for fun instead of for work or study/research.

I didn’t do any summation for 2023 because I think my first fic was posted on like 10 December 2023, but AO3 tells me I wrote 4 works, all SnowBaz, at a total of 55,154 words.

In 2024, I’ve published 5 works, at a total of 94,323 words.

What truly blows me away (and honestly makes me a bit teary) is the 1013 kudos, 100 subscribers (inc 15 subscribers to just me rather than a fic!), and 222 comment threads on my works. 🥹

Precious to me for not only getting to work with Alex, but also for being the beginning of my relationship with Becky @rbkzz, my incomparable beta who has become one of the dearest people in my life.

On The Rocks, SnowBaz, Rated: E, 74,592 words (WIP)

My opus, as it were. It originated from a fluffy cute prompt of “what if Baz and Lady Ruth were work besties?!” And I came along like “YEAH! But with trauma, exploration of love in mental illness, and alcoholism!”

I began posting it in March and it’s about 2/3 done now. But for Becky it would be both an absolute pile of horse poop, and an abandoned WIP. Instead it has a clear direction and she found motifs that I’d repeatedly used by accident in my drafts and built imagery, greater meaning, and also debated me ad nauseam on my preference for spelt over spelled.

Immune Response, @lumosinlove’s Cubs, Rated: G, 1,421 words

I was a big consumer of WolfStar in my teens and was recommended Lumosinlove’s Sweater Weather and, like many before me, fell in love with the story, the original characters, and ice hockey itself (much to the surprised glee of my Canadian spouse, who for a decade has tried in vain to get me on board. Little did he know the key was obviously gays.)

This is a lil’ slice of life sick fic examining how each of the Cubs responds to getting sick.

I have a lot more unpublished drabbles about these characters and some fics that are being cocreated so stay tuned for 2025?

Preliminary, my dear Basil, SnowBaz, Rated: T, 1,494 words

A gift fic for @martsonmars as part of the Carry On Discord’s Secret Snowflake Exchange.

Among their suggestions was “Sherlock AU, but not BBC Sherlock, 19th century Sherlock” and it hooked me with the idea that Baz would absolutely fancy himself as Sherlock. I actually sketched out a plot to SnowBazify 4 of the Holmes stories, so maybe 2025 will see them unearthed.

There is one other published fic I worked on this year, but as a beta rather than a writer for @swoopswrites @rsbigbang piece Class A which was super fun to do (and got me to watch a great series - The Gentlemen on Netflix) and Swoops has a fantastic mind so I’d encourage you to to check it out.

Finally, I have always been a writer rather than an artist, but I do enjoy drawing, and the need to upgrade my iPad for work arose and so I also tried my hand at drawing again for the first time since I was 17 or so.

In order from the first one to the most recent one, the lil scribbles I did this year:

Raimi Harry or just Harry in general from spider-man media/comics? I actually dont know alot about his comic /other media counterpart right now but...

Raimi Harry has my HEART. Like legit, one of the best and my personal favorite characters of the Raimi trilogy.

I dont know how to describe it, but hes so charming and is pretty much against the trope of "mean, snotty rich friend whos only taking advantage of Peter."

He genuiely cares and loves Peter. (And MJ too!) I love the fact despite growing up in an emotionally neglected household, Harry isnt afraid to show emotion, touch, hug. He doesnt feel above his friends. In the first novel, he tells Flash that he hangs out with Peter because Peter doesnt see him as a "walking dollar sign" and that shows where Harry's priorities are. He wants to be around people who actually like him; its not all for show like his dad.

I was reading some old drafts of the first and 2nd spiderman movie that didnt make the cut- and every draft- Harry is a well rounded character. He still has flaws. Anger, jealously, insecurity. I havent watched the movies in a good minute, but he just wanted to be his own person from his dad. Didnt he paint? I remember him painting. He never got to figure out himself what he wanted to do with his life since he took the company at age 18-19.

His death and angst always makes me cry. So particulary Raimi Harry, i love him so much RAHHH i gotta write more fics about him he deserved better

The film wasn’t that scary. Not really. But the first time they’d watched a horror film together, he’d jumped and grabbed Remus’ hand, but he’d immediately felt safer and now he was addicted to the feeling

As Halloween approached, Sirius suggested horror films every chance he got. Movie night with everyone? Original Scream Trilogy. Sunday night? The Shining. Friday at 3 am when neither of them could sleep? Insidious, obviously.

So now it was just a thing they did. It had started with him grabbing Remus’ hand and progressed to just holding hands the whole way through the film, to Remus’ arm slung around his shoulders so he could press himself into Remus’ side if he got scared, to being curled against Remus for the whole film.

The main issue with this was that Sirius would get so focused on Remus’ body, aligned with his own, that he’d zone out of the film, only to be startled by a jump scare and suddenly find himself half in Remus’ lap. That felt too intimate. He wasn’t sure how it was more intimate than the rest of it, but it seemed to be where the line was for Remus. He’d always move Sirius back beneath his arm, face pressed into his shoulder.

Remus seemed distracted while they were watching some 2000s atrocity called Cherry Falls. Sirius could hear his heart pounding in his chest and his breathing was… weird. He was scared, Sirius realised. But not of the film. He pressed a hand to Remus’ chest. The moon was the following night, but he’d never seen Remus like this before on the day before the moon.

“What’s wrong?” He whispered. Remus shook his head. “Moony?”

“It’s nothing. I’m fine.” He said. “Just… watch the film. You’re missing it.”

Sirius picked up the remote and paused it. “Hey, what’s going on?”

Remus looked at him. There was something in his eyes that Sirius couldn’t quite place. “Maybe we should stop watching horror films.”

“Why? Are you having nightmares?”

“No. I’m… I just think we should stop, ok?” Remus said flatly.

“No, not ok. Moons, what’re you on about? Are they too much? Are you scared?” Sirius pulled away from him, to look at him properly.

“Not of the films.” He muttered.

“Then what?” Remus looked haunted and Sirius was genuinely worried now.

“I don’t want to talk about it. Stop pushing.” Remus said firmly, moving away from him on the sofa. “Can we just watch this and be done?”

Sirius was even more worried now, but suspected he wouldn’t get anything from Remus if he carried on. So he just nodded and resumed the film, maintaining the distance between them. The next time he jumped, he reached for Remus’ hand instinctively before pulling his hand back like he’d been burned. He heard Remus inhale sharply and chose to ignore it.

A locker burst open in the film, the killer leapt out, but this time it was Remus who reached out for Sirius’ hand. He turned to face Sirius, his face trying to express what he was unable to verbalise. Sirius waited, not pausing the film. Silence would only make it harder for Remus to express whatever was troubling him.

“I’m scared.” He said eventually, voice shaking. “I’m scared that the next time you crawl into my lap, I won’t be able to let you go.”

Sirius stared at him, he couldn’t possibly mean—, “And if I didn’t want you to let me go?”

“Well, that would make things a lot less scary, I suppose.” He said, a smile pulling at his lips.

Once in a Lifetime: ENA selfship!!

My relationship with ENA as a series is a bit interesting. I knew of her through tumblr for a while, I'd say, but never looked into it. My friend showed me the trilogy of shorts that had her (it was "Auction Day", "Extinction Party", and "Temptation Stairway" at the time), and I thought the style was cool! I didn't think much of ENA as is, but to be fair, I was still a blossoming bud when it came to figure out what I liked. After all I was only, like...eighteen. Lol.

Ena is def one of my more recent selfships, and I was kinda unsure of her when she re-entered my mind. I was unsure if it was really smth special, or just kind of a spur of the moment situation. I was still kinda feeling that as I got this quite frankly amazing commission, but seeing the WIPs and ESPECIALLY the final product made me go "Oh yeh...that's my gf!!!"

The Lore!!

My sona here is known as Lüc, which is a somewhat corruption of my own name? I wanted something that matched the sorta off-kilter, fake-video-game vibes of ENA as is. Tho, given the sparse nature of world building as of now, I'm kinda just making the setting...Earth-like with special features, lol. Maybe DreamBBQ will change things, idk yet.

But!! Lüc!! He's a starry eyed (quite literally) mid-twenty-something who owns a local theater, but it's a lil crummy. Has an old, 80s style appearance due to lack of budget, which also effects the showings. Since I can't afford big releases, I mainly show older public domain films and cartoons, with "new" content being indie films. It attracts...people, at least. I also sell cashews instead of popcorn cause I don't like how kernels get stuck in my teeth (and in lore an unpopped kernel cracked a tooth of his as a kid)

Ena sorta just stumbled in, as she does, and hung out in the lobby. Didn't even see a film, but she did buy some cashews. We did chat for a while. It was a brief encounter, but...I kinda fell for her at first sight XD

The feeling of liking was mutual, course, but she didn't really think it romantic at first. Which is why she visited so often! To see her friend! Yippie...but eventually I had the guts to tell her how I feel (we were close enough friends by then), and she was a little surprised at first! I was worried I upset her at first, but turns out she was just thinking it over. The look of realization on her face and the way she blurted out "THAT'S WHAT THE CARNATIONS MEANT!!!" still stick in my head, heh!

We didn't start right there, exactly. Ena said she needed time to think it over, so of course I let her. I was bracing myself for waiting a whole week of not seeing her, but she ended up popping back in three days later, roughly. She seemed a lil lost for words, which shocked me seeing as she usually had such colorful vocabulary. I tried to give her some support in realizing her feelings and such, before she blurted out, again, "I LIKE YOU A LOT TOO?? CAN WE DATE MAYBE???"

And we just kinda started dating! I took her out to a very nice restaurant, and that's also where we had our first kiss!!! And we've just been kinda going regular since! She still lives at her place, but she visits a lot to mine (second floor of the theater, saves space and money!!).

We're still very much enjoying being each other's bf and gf, so marriage is hardly on the table. No kids either, probably. Neither of us think we'd be able to handle it, lol. Moony visits sometimes too! We...get along best we can. I realize she's Ena's best friend, she realizes I mean a lot to Ena. We tolerate one another for her sake.

But yeah! That's my self ship with Ena! The series timeline is kinda...nebulous? Especially with DreamBBQ and the whole "second" Ena. I mainly just ship with the OG blue-yellow pre-TempStair version of her; gonna have to wait and see with this new gal!

The amazing art of me and Ena coming together was done by the always spectacular @cupiidzbow! I said before but you did just AMAZING here!! Like my sona is great but also your Ena is so cute???? I def gotta get more with her from ya! And you, the reader, should support Freddie and his monkey business!

Currently watching: I’m currently trying to catch up on all of my shows (and reading) during this break because i swear to god i never got any when I’m occupied with school, so i’ve got quite a a few actually! The ones i’m most focused on at the moment are Ms Marvel, Gilmore Girls, Queen Charlotte, and BBC Sherlock (i’m actually only an episode in for this one but best believe i will be continuing it). But i also am currently watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Last of Us.

Currently reading: I also have quite a few for this one because apparently i am now a “multi-tasking reader” (no actually i just have a short attention span and one hell of a reading slump that always comes and goes). My main focuses are The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (my goal is to finish the entire trilogy and watch all the movies before next semester started), and Babel by R.F. Kuang (i’m only one chapter in, but i love it already! i was quite intimidated by it at first, but i actually found the writing pretty easy to read. well so far at least). I’m also currently reading Five Survive by Holly Jackson and The Goldfinch by Donna Tart but i haven’t continued them in a while.

Current obsession: …… i’m actually not sure lmao. Because one day it’ll be Bridgerton. And then somehow it will change to MCU. And when i’m feeling extra down, i go with If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio (i am so in love with it, it’s so good). And whatever else i’m currently watching and reading. Taylor Swift and Gilmore Girls are a constant one, with Conan Gray and Gracie Abrams. I don’t know. I think i get too attached too much to be honest.

I legit dont know HOW PETER STAYED IN COLLEGE 😭😭 That boy was switching jobs like crazy. A freelancer, a pizza boy, had an internship with Dr.Connors, was a science major, and SPIDER-MAN. Also im pretty sure he was a full time student!!

I just have a part time job (and do full time school) and im SUPER tired from college. I had like 4 hrs of sleep trying to finish a project last night😭 peter is way better than me lol (i know he failed some classes but still he motivatates me)

Those movies always help me through rough times, and I love when King Theoden says, "What can men do against such reckless hate?"

Brief Look at Judge Dredd Novels, Part XIII: Eclipse by James Swallow

More than anything else, Eclipse makes a compelling case in defence of James Swallow's robust and storied career as an author of tie-in fiction for everything from 2000 AD and Doctor Who to Star Trek. This is, perhaps, something of a backhanded compliment, and it's rather telling that his sole full-length Doctor Who novel was a New Series Adventure, released in the period where the book lines were freed from the responsibility of carrying the franchise forward.

Make no mistake, Swallow's work is perfect for the world of science fiction tie-ins, which is, in the bulk of cases, the marginally more polite way of saying that a particular novel wouldn't especially hold up under the more exacting standards typically demanded of books outside that realm.

None of this should be construed as a condemnation of Eclipse, mind you. It was an enjoyable enough experience in the moment, certainly moreso than some of Black Flame's more troubled outings like Dredd vs Death. Sure, it might function best as a string of action sequences with functionally competent dialogue scenes to provide some linking tissue, but that's not exactly foreign territory for 2000 AD, and the fact of the matter is... well, those action sequences work.

The usual pitfalls of sci-fi tie-ins aren't entirely absent, however. Swallow may not display the apophenic, continuity-focused glee of a Gary Russell or a Craig Hinton, but this is still a book which consciously hearkens back to the very earliest days of the Judge Dredd comic strip, bringing back Luna-1, Chief Judge-Marshal Tex, and C. W. Moonie. Part of this can undoubtedly be explained by the nature of the book's genesis, stemming from the intense research undertaken by Swallow for The Rookie's Guide to Luna-1 a rejected supplement to the Dredd equivalent of that most fannish of tie-in artforms, the tabletop RPG.

Certainly, I'd probably find many of the key scenes here far more emotionally impactful if I had a greater familiarity with the mythology of 2000 AD, but I'd also be lying if I said that there wasn't something mildly charming about the zeal with which Eclipse plainly believes in the magazine's continuity as a rich mythological tapestry all of its own, in spite of (or perhaps because of) its relative irreverence.

At the time of the novel's publication in September 2004, the British science fiction scene was waiting with bated breath to see whether Russell T. Davies' vaunted revival of Doctor Who would actually manage to pick up steam, while the fourth season of Star Trek: Enterprise was due to premiere in a matter of weeks, finally seeing that franchise collapse under its own weight after eighteen years of televisual dominance. Even Star Wars was looking rather poorly off the back of the prequel trilogy, and whatever the questionable wisdom of a franchise-dominated conception of science fiction, I'd almost certainly prefer it be defined by the weirdness of 2000 AD and Doctor Who, even if that's almost certainly never going to happen (and indeed, it really didn't).

As for the actual characters and themes of the book, eh, Kontarsky was a pretty engaging guest character with a solid if basic arc, and none of the other Judges were egregiously awful. The notion of the Cold War, with the Space Race and the Moon as proxy participants, having effectively started up again and brought the imperialistic machinations of Mega-City One and East-Meg Two to the lunar surface, to the detriment of the satellite's inhabitants, certainly managed to provide a timely lens on the War on Terror, but it's still nothing groundbreaking as far as the popular culture of 2004 is concerned.

Eclipse is a solid middle-of-the-road Dredd adventure, and while that may be a tad disappointing, it's no crime. (Oh come on, I had to try a pun like that at some point, I'm just surprised I lasted as long as I did.)
