God I can't fuckin catch a break my adhd keeps pelting me with so many things to be obsessive about and my autism makes sure that if I don't interact with them I'm gonna feel like my chest is being torn out and I'm dying slowly but my adhd doesn't let me actually choose one to interact with cause it keeps bringing up the others but my autism is panicking about that because I need to have a Thing to do
I just want to like. Read, write or draw in peace. Is that too much to ask for. Five minutes
I missed having a hyperfixation when I didn't for a month or so but I forgot how extreme my brain gets about them ig they're called hyper for a reason

Dick being neurodivergent, because why not? (Am I projecting myself onto my hyperfixation character of the moment? Absolutely).
Dick finds the weirdest possible positions to be absolutely comfortable. We already talked about how he likes to hang upside down, but besides that, he's always sitting in a strange way.
Bruce doesn't have any opinion on any of this, but sometimes wonders if Dick is trying to give himself some kind of cramp. The others just wonder if the boy has actual bones.
Bruce thought Dick couldn't be a picky eater, but he's totally wrong. Alfred taught Dick to cook because he knows that if he depended solely on food prepared by other people, the boy would starve. (Worse is when they discover that if they don't remind him, this guy won't eat at all. He just totally forgets that humans need food).
He also taught him other things for sensory issues that he doesn't want to acknowledge. (Yes, there are ways to keep his sheets soft enough, to prevent his shirts from getting lint, even cleaning the slab so it doesn't have weird textures).
Bruce always purposely gave him more work than he needed to do, otherwise he would never get the boy to concentrate. Nothing too difficult, he didn't want to overburden him yet, but seriously, even if he liked math, he would never sit down for more than 10 minutes to do his homework. Organizing his tasks didn't always work, but a deadline? It was his best strategy. Even out of ten minutes, eight were just him thinking about something else and only two to complete the job, he would complete it anyway.
(He never gives him the same task twice in a row. God knows that will never be complete. Have you seen how many jobs this man has? He can't stay in one place for more than a few months).
His thoughts also jump from one situation to another as much as he jumps on rooftops when he is on patrol. Bruce never understands his line of thinking, but it is extremely helpful in solving cases.
Despite appearing extroverted, Dick was still more of an ambivert, sometimes even seeming more introverted, he's just not that shy. His social battery runs out pretty quickly, even if he pretends it doesn't. He still needs time to himself in order to move on, and as a child his best way of pointing this out to Bruce was by hiding under tables in a dark place, or instead, climb to the highest places, farthest from people. Bruce learned that although Dick was used to the noise of people, he was used to seeing it from above, not in the middle of the crowd.
It's not that he's non-verbal, but there are still days where just talking is a no-no. As a child he had better control, but as an adult he just doesn't want to talk, and he's not going to talk.
Weighted blankets? Yes please. Noise cancelling headphones? He would love to, but he is too paranoid to completely isolate himself from his surroundings. (If his friends notice that his leg is bouncing more than usual, they assure him that they will keep watch and ask him to wear his headphones for a while, if they need to talk to him they use sign language).
He also has blackout curtains. And we all know his comfort object is a stuffed elephant, come on. (I love the fandom for this idea. Give the guy his stuffed elephant, give him Zitka.)
Yes, Dick, people have hobbies, but normal people don't change hobbies after mastering them once, much less change them every three days. No, gymnastics is no longer your hobby at this point, it's literally your life.
A special interest falls short when you spent a week without sleep to continue researching your new hyperfixation.

Differential Diagnosis
Spencer Reid x fem!reader x platonic!James Wilson
wc: 3.4k
note: okay, hyperfixations are WORKING. I started watching House MD (I saw a few seasons years ago, but I'd forgotten about it) and this just popped into my head during a night of mystical delirium. I hope it makes some sense; I had a lot of fun writing it.
Tumblr media
The mere thought of asking Gregory House for a favor made your stomach turn.
Not because he was incompetent—quite the opposite—but because you knew his corrosive humor and his eagerness to make others uncomfortable all too well. Every time your paths crossed in the past, he found a way to mess with you, point out any personality trait that might make you vulnerable, and laugh it off with his signature mocking tone.
And yet, there you were, standing next to Spencer Reid at Princeton-Plainsboro, trying to convince yourself that this encounter wouldn’t be as terrible as you imagined.
As members of the FBI, the team had the freedom to consult with as many specialists as necessary, even if they weren’t directly involved in the case you were working on. And deep down, you knew there was no one better to help you than Gregory.
You cursed the moment Spencer had mentioned it in front of Hotch because you had to confess to the "friendship"—if you could even call it that—you had with the doctor. Well, more than a friendship, Hotch had sent you because he trusted that you could persuade him. You had asked Reid to go with you so he could explain the medical aspects and, in part, as a kind of punishment for him.
You had already spoken with the hospital director, and she had given you the all-clear to head to his office. When you arrived, House had his back turned, checking something on his computer. His voice greeted you before you could even speak.
“If this is another attempt by Cuddy to get me to take cases for free, tell her my charity quota is already exhausted this week.”
“It’s good to see you too,” you said, crossing your arms.
House slowly turned in his chair, and upon seeing you, a mocking smile appeared on his face.
“Well, well. My favorite FBI agent. What brings you here? Need a consultation, or are you here to arrest me for being too cool?”
You sighed. House was already getting on your nerves, and you hadn’t even been with him for five minutes.
“I’m sure if I were to arrest you, it wouldn’t be for that. We need your help with a case.”
House leaned his elbows on the desk and interlaced his fingers. He looked curious, like someone who, after hours of boredom, was offered an intellectual challenge. At least you had one advantage: you knew him well enough to read his expressions.
“Are you serious? The United States National Security and Intelligence Service needs Gregory House?”
“Maybe. But if you get too full of yourself, there are always other alternatives.”
“None as good as me, I see. I’m the first one you go to,” he murmured, a mixture of arrogance and mockery in his voice. “Don’t you have other FBI doctors for this? Or perhaps a 'medical council' that includes the entire detective team?”
You took a few steps closer, making it clear you were there for something serious. Spencer followed you cautiously.
“No, House. What we have is... something we can’t solve without your specialized knowledge. And I know this because you specialize in cases that no one else can interpret correctly.”
“And what do I gain?”
Reid intervened in his patient tone.
“It’s a case with complex medical implications. We thought you might be interested.”
House turned his head toward him, assessing him. He seemed as if he had barely noticed his presence.
“And who are you?”
“This is Dr. Spencer Reid,” you said, stepping forward. “He’s my colleague at the Behavioral Analysis Unit.”
“Huh. I’ve heard about you…” House began, as if Reid were some kind of celebrity whose biography he was now trying to recall. “You’re the genius at the FBI, aren’t you? The child prodigy who memorized the Encyclopedia Britannica before he could ride a bike.”
“It wasn’t before I learned to ride a bike,” Reid corrected matter-of-factly.
House burst out laughing.
“Okay, you had my curiosity, but now you have my attention. What do we know?”
You sat in the chairs in front of his desk and slid the files you had brought toward him. Reid, from his spot, waited patiently for you to give him a signal to begin the explanation.
“Several victims have developed severe neurological symptoms before dying. We haven’t found any common toxins or obvious signs of poisoning, but their organs show unexplained deterioration.”
House flipped through the documents with little interest, probably analyzing what Spencer was saying.
“Interesting.”
“At autopsy, we found significant degeneration in the basal ganglia and the substantia nigra of the brain,” he continued. “There was also an abnormal accumulation of proteins in the limbic system, similar to what occurs in prion diseases, but without the presence of prions themselves.”
“Go on.”
“The liver tissue showed massive necrosis, with no signs of viral infection. And the lungs had edema, although the fluid levels were not sufficient to indicate severe heart failure.”
House narrowed his eyes.
“Hallucinations?”
“Yes,” Reid nodded. “In all the victims, the symptoms began with confusion, then extreme paranoia and episodes of aggression.”
House leaned forward slightly, interested.
“How long did it take from the first symptom to death?”
“About a week.”
“Common substances in the body?”
“Nothing consistent with known poisons. No recreational drugs or heavy metal exposure either.”
House let out a low whistle.
“Wow, this is interesting.”
You watched the interaction in surprise. House rarely took anything seriously in the first few minutes of a conversation, and the fact that he was now listening intently to Reid meant he was genuinely impressed. Then again, it was easy to be impressed by anything that came out of Reid’s mouth.
House leaned back in his chair, turning his cane slightly in his hand. His gaze slid from Reid to you and back to the file.
“All right, genius boy, give me a diagnosis.”
Reid squared his shoulders with his characteristic seriousness.
“It could be an atypical variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob syndrome. The abnormal accumulation of proteins in the limbic system and the degeneration of the substantia nigra could indicate an accelerated neurodegenerative disease.”
House shook his head almost immediately.
“There are no prions. There’s no evidence that it’s spongiform encephalopathy. Furthermore, Creutzfeldt-Jakob doesn’t kill in a week.”
“It could be a case of L-Dopa analogue poisoning, perhaps exposure to a compound derived from MPTP. That would explain the necrosis in the substantia nigra and the neurological symptoms.”
“If that were the case, I’d expect to see rigidity and bradykinesia, not extreme paranoia,” House countered. “And liver necrosis doesn’t fit.”
Reid frowned slightly, thoughtful.
“Paraneoplastic autoimmune encephalitis?”
House snorted.
“And where’s the tumor, Einstein? Did I leave it in my other pants?”
“Some tumors may be too small to be detected in their early stages, especially ovarian teratomas—”
“Oh, right, because I’m sure all the victims had ovaries,” House interrupted, his sarcasm evident.
Reid was unfazed.
“Autoimmune encephalitis may also be associated with thymomas or lung carcinomas.”
House tilted his head, assessing him with more interest than he cared to admit.
“How old did you say you were?”
“Twenty-eight.”
House gave a short laugh. There was something like approval on his face, as if you’d brought him a tribute and he was happy with it.
“Medical specialty?”
“I’m not a doctor.”
“Uh-huh, sure. Cardiologist? Neurologist? No, wait—infectious disease specialist with a Sherlock Holmes complex?”
“I’m not a doctor,” he repeated, as if he hadn’t heard him the first time.
House hated being treated like an idiot, and, to be honest, you were enjoying the situation a little.
He frowned, that signature expression of his, and looked at your colleague again. “Then what the hell are you doing diagnosing?”
“I have PhDs in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Engineering. Also, specializations in Psychology and Sociology.”
“So, no medical degree, but you’re still correcting me.”
“I don’t need an MD to understand pathology, neuroscience, or toxicology,” he muttered nonchalantly, as if it were just another ordinary conversation.
You already liked Reid a lot, and after solving the case, you would make sure to buy him a few drinks just for the simple pleasure of infuriating the most cynical human being in the world.
“Tell me the truth, does the Bureau pay you well?”
“Excuse me?”
“Because I could give you a job here. Then I could fire those three idiots I have under my command, and you’d be enough to keep this department running. You’re more efficient, and while somewhat annoying, your answers are more grounded than theirs.”
“Don’t even think about it. Get your own genius.”
“You’re finally talking! For a moment there, I thought you were going to let your boyfriend do all the work.”
You rolled your eyes in annoyance. There was no need to inconvenience the poor boy.
“He’s not my boyfriend.”
“Wow, what a waste,” House said with mock pity before turning his attention back to Reid. “Okay, smart-ass, let’s do another brainstorm. Neurotoxins in the environment? Maybe a rare fungus, something that affects the central nervous system and causes necrosis in other organs?”
Reid shook his head almost instantly.
“If it were an environmental toxin, we should have found traces in lung tissue or blood. We did extensive testing, and there’s no evidence of chronic exposure.”
“Okay, how about mitochondrial disease? A rare genetic mutation that only manifests under certain environmental conditions?”
“Unlikely. The progression is too rapid for a classic mitochondrial disease, and there’s no evidence of prior systemic failure.”
House pressed his lips together in approval.
“You were right from the start. I love this case; it’s like an intellectual prostitute to me, and that doesn’t happen very often.”
Although the tasteless joke didn’t amuse you, you were reassured because he had agreed. The pre-arranged conversation was proof enough for you that the case would be resolved in the best possible way; after all, you had two geniuses standing in front of you.
You looked at Reid with a slight smile, grateful that he’d been so punctual with the details and had sparked House’s curiosity. He, as sweet as ever, returned the expression.
“Tell me something, do you always rub your fingertips together before you speak?”
Reid blinked, confused, as you frowned. It was obvious House wasn’t talking to you.
“Sorry?”
House waved a hand.
“You’ve done it three times since you came in. A repetitive pattern. Do you also avoid prolonged eye contact and feel uncomfortable with loud sounds?”
Now it was Reid who frowned. Before you could say anything, your companion spoke:
“Are you implying that I have autism?”
House shrugged.
“Asperger’s, specifically. Although that’s not used anymore because it’s not right to separate the functionally from the non-functionally mentally ill, right?” he laughed to himself. “And I’m not insinuating anything, I’m just observing what you’re doing.”
“I’m not autistic.”
House tilted his head, looking at him almost like an exotic animal.
“Maybe you should get tested.”
Just then, when you were about to point out House’s clear traits of Antisocial Personality Disorder and Narcissism, the door opened and someone else entered the office.
“House, could you stop torturing the interns for a moment? I need your help—”
The voice cut off as soon as the newcomer saw you, and your heart gave a treacherous leap.
James Wilson stood in the doorway, his white coat neatly buttoned, holding a pair of folders. His expression was calm and patient, as if he was already used to House’s games.
In your youth, you had a ridiculous crush on him, back when you had to do some internships at the hospital and had the misfortune of ending up supervising House. That’s when you met him.
Wilson was the kind of man who exuded kindness and confidence, with a sharp yet approachable intelligence. Not like House, who enjoyed making others feel stupid, or Reid, who was simply brilliant without even trying.
It wasn’t one of those extreme, idealized loves, but it was enough to have followed some of his medical lectures with fascination, impressed by his intelligence, his empathy, his way of explaining things clearly. You admired the person he was, how he always looked out for you and became your lawyer when House was getting too unbearable.
And now he was standing before you, after years of that old crush being left in the past… Or at least, that’s what you thought.
Because the moment he said your name, your mind seemed to forget how to coordinate words.
“It’s been a long time! I heard you’re working for the FBI now, right?” he politely approached, and you jumped to your feet to take the hand he was offering. “Congratulations! I always knew you’d go far.”
“Huh, thanks, Doctor,” you murmured shyly. The others present could notice the change in your voice, your posture, even your expression.
“Oh, just call me Wilson. Otherwise, you make me feel like you’re my patient.”
“Then thank you, Wilson. How nice to see you again.”
The smile he gave you made you blush, and you unconsciously brought a hand to your hair, tucking it behind your ear. House, never one to miss a juicy opportunity, narrowed his eyes and then smiled wickedly.
“Oh, this is glorious.”
Wilson looked at him, confused.
“Did I miss something?”
“Yes, dear. Turns out you have a secret admirer,” House said, pointing at you with his cane. “How did I not notice this before?
You felt the heat rise up your neck to your face. Spencer, who had remained silent, watching the interaction, now looked at you with something close to surprise.
“House, what the hell are you talking about now?”
“She! Look at her when you arrived. She was insulting me a second before, and as soon as she saw you, she turned into a lovesick schoolgirl.”
“It’s called kindness. It’s hard to practice it with you because you tend to be a jerk who makes me insult you every chance I get.”
Your attempt to divert the subject was useless because, once House got something stuck in his head, it was hard for him to let it go.
“You know, I always hoped you’d like older men and thought I was the ideal candidate, but I see you already had someone else in mind.”
“Did you like Dr. Wilson?”
“No! I mean, I… I liked him, but not in that way. Besides, it’s irrelevant!” you exclaimed, annoyed by Reid’s sudden indiscretion. Sometimes he spoke without thinking.
House smiled with delight.
“Oh, that’s completely relevant. In fact, I think your medical case can wait. This is much more interesting.”
Wilson sighed in resignation and looked at his friend, deciding it was time to intervene.
“House, will you stop bothering her? It’s not her fault that no one wants to treat you with human decency because of your behavior.”
You avoided looking at Wilson at all costs. You knew that as soon as your eyes met his, you’d blush, and that would only give House more reason to be a nuisance.
“For God’s sake, can we talk about the case again?”
House let out a laugh you never, ever imagined coming from him. He was ecstatic about what was happening, completely amused.
“Don’t you want Reid to know that his coworker had romantic dreams about the most smarmy oncologist in the hospital?”
“It’s nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, a study from the University at Albany found that nearly a third of young women report having been attracted to authority figures like teachers, doctors, or supervisors at some point. It’s a well-documented phenomenon linked to perceptions of competence, security, and emotional maturity—”
“Reid,” you hissed. You swore you could die of embarrassment any second. “You’re not helping.”
“Sorry.”
House ignored the comments and leaned toward you.
“Tell me the truth, did you dream of being diagnosed with a terminal illness just so you could spend more time with him?”
“House,” Wilson exclaimed, his tone now stern. There was a second of silence before he continued, “Don’t bother her. Just admit that you’re trying to humiliate her because you’re jealous that your pretty assistant had a crush on me instead of you.”
You immediately raised your head, staring at him directly. There was amusement on his face, and you tried not to burst out laughing—not knowing if you were doing it out of embarrassment, to deny the accusations, or out of genuine amusement.
House looked offended, and even Spencer held back a chuckle. He didn’t want to make fun of you because you were his friend, and there were feelings involved, at least on his part, but he found it endearing to see you so flustered by the situation. Besides, it was hilarious to think of a young woman’s pupils dilating in the oncologist’s presence. He hadn’t pictured you as that kind of person.
“I’m Spencer Reid, by the way. I haven’t introduced myself.”
Your partner’s unwelcome intrusion, in an attempt to lighten the tension, made Wilson burst out laughing.
“James Wilson. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
You knew he was truly committed to protecting what little dignity you had left when he shook Reid’s hand—because you knew how terrified he was of physical contact with strangers.
When you looked at House, waiting for him to offer you a truce, he waggled his eyebrows up and down, like a provocative little boy. No one was surprised when you gave him the middle finger.
“Are you going to help us or not?”
House tilted his head, clearly enjoying the spectacle.
“Hmm, I will. Only because now you’ll owe me a favor, and since I know about Wilson, I doubt you’ll refuse to do it.”
Wilson sighed.
“You’re hopeless.”
“You know me well. What did you want to ask me, by the way? Everyone seems to need me these days.”
“Nothing urgent, I can wait,” he murmured. Then he looked at you. “Unlike House, I do have work to do in my department, so I’m leaving. It’s nice to see you again. If you need anything, you know where to find me.”
“Same here. Although I hope we don’t have to call on each other’s services anytime soon.”
He laughed at your joke. Almost as if he wanted to test your limits, he leaned closer and, in addition to shaking your hand, planted a goodbye kiss on your cheek.
House (surprisingly) had the good sense to wait until his friend left the office before he started making exaggerated kissing noises—completely childish, if they asked you.
That was the final straw. You grabbed a tennis ball lying around and threw it straight at his chest: a ruthless and deliberate shot.
“Hey! Didn’t anyone teach you not to hit cripples?”
“And be thankful it wasn’t in the leg,” you exclaimed disdainfully. “Now move your handicapped ass outside. We need to go, and I’ll drag you to the car if necessary.”
“Now I see why you’re not her boyfriend,” he muttered as he stood up, rolling his eyes in Reid’s direction. “She’s just as crazy as my boss, and no one sleeps with that woman.”
You maintained your composure until he limped out the door, clearly pleased with the mess he had made. Once you were alone, Spencer cautiously approached you, testing the waters to avoid triggering your anger.
“That was… interesting.”
“Reid, I swear if you tell the team, not even all the love I have for you will stop me from punching you in the face. And it would be a shame to ruin your best attribute.”
“Hey, don’t take it out on me. I was just an unfortunate listener in this mess.”
“I’m serious.”
“Understood, ma’am,” he said slightly mockingly, raising both hands in a show of sincerity. The two of you then headed for the exit, following House.
There was silence for a stretch of the hallway until, just before reaching the elevator, he decided to speak again.
“But you did like him?”
God knows how you looked at him to make him laugh nervously, half amused and half worried.
“Don’t tempt me, Reid.”
“It was just a question!” he murmured innocently. The elevator doors closed in front of you once you stood next to the man with the cane. “Though, to be honest, I wouldn’t blame him if he had feelings for you. You’re so smart and pretty, it would be silly not to.”
You looked back at him, but this time there was a certain surprise and delight in your expression. Spencer, afraid of your answer, just stared at you with those huge doe eyes.
“Shut up, please,” you laughed.
With that, you leaned against him, defeated, and he allowed himself to give you a sweet hug as if he wanted to console you for the painful scene you had just experienced.
The rest of the case wasn’t any easier to deal with House, but at least you had the company of your own genius to make it more bearable.

The fast passage of time never failed to surprise Alucard.
The way the pages of his favorite books would get yellowed and frail without him noticing. How stone pavement would get slippery, worn out, after years of feet walking on it. How quickly a small village with only a few families could turn into a city bubbling with thousands of lives. How a small seedling would turn into a tall apple tree laden with fruit before he could take notice of it. The way fashion changed rapidly; how his clothes would get outdated and he’d be forced to acquire new ones in order to fit better into society.
How fast humans aged.
He didn’t like to ponder too much into it. Not anymore. It always made old scars ache again. However, as he looked at Juste Belmont, he couldn’t stop himself.
A part of his brain still expected to see a skinny and clumsy boy when Richter mentioned Juste. After all, that was his last memory of the Belmont, although he knew it was impossible. And yet… when Alucard laid eyes on the man, he couldn’t help but be shocked. He knew he’d see an adult, yes… not an elderly man with white hair, beard and deep wrinkles, a man that looked older than him (even though he was in much better form than the average human his age).
How many years had it been since Alucard last saw Juste...? It was around the time his grandfather passed, if he wasn’t mistaken. Was it around 50 years ago, perhaps?
Hell. Only 50 years had passed, and Juste already looked like a raisin.
Half of him knew that was part of the beauty of human existence: its fleetingness. Every human had a clear and direct story: beginning, middle, end. Their will to build, transform, adapt, improve and sometimes destroy, despite the little time they had on Earth. That was why human society changed so much in all those years. They had limited time: they were in a hurry to do everything they could with what they got – and that’s why Alucard admired mankind so much. Despite their immortality, vampires didn’t seem as willing to make significant changes, always choosing complacency or destruction instead.
The other half of him – the half where his deepest scars where hidden – hated this fact about humans. Even felt bitter of them, although he wouldn’t admit it out loud. Humans came and went before he could notice. They marked his life and left him alone before he could even prepare himself.
Alucard inherited the human heart that an immortal shouldn’t have. That was one of the small curses he carried for being who he was.
“Why don’t I come to Paris with you?” Juste argued with Richter, which honestly humored Alucard a bit. The younger man was acting as the adult, coming with up with rational reasons, while the elder was eager to join the fight with them. There it was… humans’ will to do something despite everything.
The white-haired vampire watched the scene in silence, sitting on a tree trunk with Annette by his side. The morning fog over the lake and around the clearing made him keep his guard up despite his relaxed demeanor, as it could hide spies easily; in fact, he was almost sure there was someone out there, but he couldn’t tell exactly where. The smell of burnt wood, ashes and vampire corpses was disorienting.
“Are all Belmonts like this?” Annette wondered out loud with a quirked eyebrow.
“Irritating? Oh, yes.” Alucard knew that it was a genetic trait inherited by every Belmont (other than their clear blue eyes). “To be honest, it’s been years since I’ve had much to do with them.” He admitted. Even so, it seemed that things hadn’t changed much in this aspect. “But if I can’t stop Erzsebet, I’ll need a Belmont to finish the job. Or a revolutionary witch, of course.” Annette opened a small, bashful smile at his last sentence.
Richter started to list reasons to why Juste should stay in Machecoul – he owed it to Maria’s mother, he didn’t care if Juste wasn’t great with teenage girls, all the usual Belmont family drama. Well, something else that time hadn’t changed. Alucard almost had a deja vu, as it wasn’t the first time he witnessed a scene like that.
So he decided to lay his attention elsewhere.
Ruby was standing at a good distance from the rest of the group; she had a focused – slightly annoyed, even – expression on her face as she analyzed the pairs of boots in front of her. She had taken them herself from the corpses before the three men collected the deceased vampires to throw them at the fire burning in the Belmont’s now ruined cottage.
She took a boot and placed it next to her barefoot feet, measuring it. Apparently, it was too big. She sighed and did the same with the next pair.
Alucard had been paying much attention to her. He’s one to always focus on the task at hand – said task meant to stop the impending doom hovering over mankind on Europe – however, from the moment he entered her room through her window, things took a different turn. Got more complicated.
The white-haired vampire knew she wasn’t lying. After you live that long, you learn how to pick up the mannerisms of deceit, especially in humans. They blush, blink, avoid your gaze, stutter, their voice gets higher. It takes a lot of practice to get rid of these involuntary quirks. From the moment they first met, Ruby seemed absolutely honest in her fright; in fact, it was as if she couldn’t lie even if she wanted to. As if… she was trained to never lie.
However, it wasn’t enough to make Alucard less suspicious of her. Too much was at stake to let himself be carried away by her story. He knew he was too old to get fooled, but he also knew to never say never – thus why he kept his attention on her, even if he didn’t show it.
He was trying to understand her. Get a glimpse of what was really going on.
Ruby kept silent during most of the way to Juste’s cottage – and that was a lot, given they walked the entire night. She barely made questions. She didn’t ask to rest, to get some water, didn’t complain about her tight shoe (Alucard could feel the faint smell of blood coming from the scratch on her heel). She kept her head low most of the time. Well… she did promise that they wouldn’t even notice she was there, but Alucard didn’t think she was so serious about it.
It made him feel bad for her, to be honest. He could tell it was another thing she was trained to do.
Three moments of their long walk towards Juste’s location caught his attention the most.
The first was during one of their few stops, when Ruby stood apart of the group and stared at the sky for quite some time, in complete silence. She had a focused expression he hadn’t seen her show yet; one that didn’t somehow look pained. The second was when she caught glimpse of a squirrel – the tiny animal ran up a tree so fast that Richter and Annette didn’t notice it – and gasped, her eyes widened, as if she’d never seen a squirrel before. When the two asked what happened, Ruby brushed it off in embarrassment.
The third moment was while Annette explained what they were going to retrieve in Paris – Sekhmet’s mummy which contained half of her soul. And… Ruby didn’t react.
Alucard remembered that both Richter and Annette got confused at what a mummy is. Ruby didn’t. As if she already knew what it was.
That put a question mark in his head.
Alucard wanted to trust her. She seemed genuine. He got really worried about her at the forest, when she learned about Drolta’s death; there was no way she could lie about that. But… how could he trust someone whose own mind was untrustworthy?
Ruby measured her feet with another worn out leather boot, knee-high and with a very short heel. This time, it seemed to match. She put on the pair. Tip-toed, turned her ankles around, took some steps. Finally, she opened a tiny satisfied smile and sighed in relief. “This will do,” she muttered to herself.
Alucard narrowed his eyes slightly.
There was a time – a long time ago –, when he was young, Alucard would trust her in a heartbeat. He wouldn’t even question her. He’d let himself be carried by his inexperience, his naivety… and his inherent taste for beautiful, delicate things. Because yes, Ruby was beautiful like a flower. She reminded him of a weeping begonia – graceful, colorful, yet with a certain melancholy to it. He’d offer help, cook for her, give her a shelter. He’d even offer himself to carry her on his back the entire way due to her hurt heel.
But Alucard wasn’t naive anymore, and there was too much at stake to have faith in her like that.
Of course, one could argue that if that’s the case, then he shouldn’t trust Richter and Annette as well, given he barely knew both. But Richter was a Belmont – and like all Belmonts, he carried his heart on his sleeve; Richter was incapable of deceit. Annette was mature, much more than someone her age should be, due to her past; Alucard could recognize someone with a strong sense of justice and pride like her. There was nothing complicated about them. Ruby was complicated. Ruby meant mystery in a situation that demanded clarity.
Ruby was their upper hand against Erzsebet, but she was also a problem.
“Annette,” the white-haired vampire called quietly. The girl looked at him immediately, understanding his quiet and serious tone. “I’d like to ask you a favor.” She nodded. “Try to… stay close to Ruby. She might feel more comfortable to talk with another woman.”
Annette narrowed her eyes and pursed her lips. It might’ve sounded that he was just caring for Ruby, but the suspicion in his expression told her otherwise.
“Do you think she’s lying?” she asked in the same quiet voice.
“No,” Alucard said. “But she doesn’t remember anything from her past, so it doesn’t mean much. Perhaps… the real Ruby hidden in her memories might not be who she seems to be.”
Annette appeared hesitant – Alucard knew she had sympathy for Ruby – but nodded anyway.
The white-haired vampire sighed, tired of hearing the Belmonts talk, and got up.
“Richter. We need to go.” He was about to call Ruby as well, but she was already running towards them.
“Did you find one that fits?” Annette asked as she also got up. Ruby nodded.
“Yes. It doesn’t even smell bad, either.” She appeared so content with something so simple. Annette sent her a small smile before frowning and crossing her arms.
“What happens if we get to Paris and the mummy doesn’t hold any power, it’s just some old corpse that was stolen hundreds of years ago?” Annette wondered – but Alucard didn’t really pay attention to it.
Richter hugged Juste. Ruby watched it in silence – and the faint happiness she held seconds ago for finding good boots immediately faded away, being replaced by… longing. It was like watching a flower wither in front of his eyes.
A weeping begonia, indeed.
It was another one of those moments when Alucard wished he didn’t have his human heart. One of the few things that the fast passage of time hadn’t been able to change.
“Then at least it’s no use to Erzsebet, either,” he answered Annette’s question and turned around, not waiting for anyone to follow him.
Tumblr media
When the great flowing river appeared, you couldn’t help but feel a bit of excitement.
Rivers and lakes kept frozen most of the time in Erzsebet’s country. It amounted to your pile of new experiences. In 24 hours, you’d already seen and done much more than during your time in imprisonment.
You tried not to gasp. This river was much larger than the one you’d seen a few hours ago, during one of the stops you’d made to drink water. The sound of the serene current was hypnotizing; it reflected sunlight beautifully, its surface shimmering with the glow of a million diamonds. A bit of fog still hovered over the nearby trees of the river bank.
“The river will take us much of the way from here,” Alucard explained. Since leaving Juste’s clearing, he had taken the lead and resumed himself to not talking much. Richter and Annette were carrying all of the conversations, to be honest, as you decided to also keep quiet.
Since you left the ruins at Machecoul, you noticed that Alucard was a bit… aloof. Or at least, he decided to act this way due the current situation – and you could understand that. The half-vampire wasn’t being rude, and never once did he appear annoyed anytime Richter and Annette made questions; in fact, he was more than eager to debate their plans or to explain how his hunt for Sekhmet’s mummy went over the years. And at the same time… his expression stayed nonchalant all throughout the way.
Well. You couldn’t expect anything less from a man that stayed extremely calm as he invaded Erzsebet’s chateau.
Nevertheless, it made you feel a bit… weird. You didn’t want to say lonely, but that’s more or less how you felt. Alucard was the one to talk to you at the forest after all, and Richter and Annette… they seemed too enthralled in each other, so you didn’t want to interrupt. You didn’t have the courage to initiate a conversation with Alucard either, scared to bother him. So to you, the entire travel had been a long, weird silence.
There was also the fact that you were in panic of attracting any attention to yourself. They must be extremely confident to walk around at night, you thought; how many vampires could be lurking under the moonlight, between the shadows? As much as the sights amazed you – heavens, you even saw a squirrel! –, you couldn’t help but also shiver whenever one of them stepped on twig.
“We won’t be stopping, so if you need provisions, get them now,” Alucard continued. “Keep out of sight. For sure, we’re being followed.” There it was. Just as you were thinking of vampires lurking, he confirmed your fears. And yet, instead of taking a fight stance or getting tense, he just furrowed his eyebrows and completed in an annoyed tone: “I’m always being bloody followed.”
Richter looked back. Then, you saw as his chest bubbled with excitement.
“Are you going to turn the tables on them, surprise them and then take them out with your flying-sword-thing?!” he asked on the same beat, not taking a second to breathe, his blue eyes shining with anticipation.
Alucard stared at him an embarrassingly second longer than normal.
“...I’m going to find a boat.”
And walked away.
Annette covered her mouth to muffle her laughter. Richter’s face got redder than a tomato. You looked down, unable to hide your chuckle as well. He seemed… very impressed by Alucard, you noticed. Once again, excited like a child. It was cute – and you got surprised at yourself, because you didn’t remember thinking anything was cute before.
Richter recovered from the embarrassment in a second. “I’ll hunt, you gather,” he said, pointing with his thumb. “I mean… you could hunt, too.”
Annette giggled once again. “I’ll find some mushrooms.”
They started to walk into the woods while talking about mushroom types.
For a second, you stood in place like a scared cat. Should you follow Alucard? Would that annoy him? Should you follow the other two? Would you annoy them? Didn’t they said you’d have to keep under watch at all times? But what if you became a burden? What if–
“Why aren’t you coming, Ruby?”
You jumped.
Annette and Richter stopped walking to look back at you. The girl had a little smile on her lips. “Do you like mushrooms?”
Oh. Right.
You ran to reach them. “I do,” you said awkwardly. The only good thing about living under Erzsebet’s enclosure was that you were, in fact, well-fed. It wasn’t always like that… but after you became obedient, you were served good food – and creamy mushroom soup was one of the dishes you liked.
“Let’s just hope that Alucard likes it, too,” Richter pondered, holding his chin. “If he even eats at all.”
“Of course he eats. Why wouldn’t he?” Annette raised one eyebrow.
Richter shrugged. “Well, I’m not an expert in half-vampire anatomy to understand his physiological needs.”
You clasped your hands behind your back, taking courage to speak up. “Is he… always like that?” You knew Alucard must’ve been far by that point, yet you still lowered your voice, as if afraid that he might hear it.
You didn’t even need to explain what “like that” meant. Annette pursed her lips. “I can’t tell. To be honest, we know him as long as you do.” That took you by surprise; you mean that Alucard trusted Richter and Annette without even knowing them?! The girl in yellow smirked and sent a teasing look towards Richter. “I mean, I didn’t know him; Richter right here knows everything about Alucard.”
“Hey– it’s not like that,” the boy blushed yet again and scratched the back of his neck. It seemed to be a quirk of his whenever he felt embarrassed. “It’s just that my family knows him for a long time, okay? I’ve… always heard stories about Alucard.”
“And is he what you were expecting?” Annette asked. Richter hummed, taking a second to answer.
“...Not exactly.” He crossed his arms. “I always imagined he’d look older. I mean, if you heard the stories they told me when I was a kid, you’d expect to meet a giant, like five meters tall.” Annette chuckled.
“Why does your family know him?” you asked Richter. He sighed.
“The Belmonts… we’re a long lineage of vampire hunters. Hundreds of years ago, my ancestors helped him defeat Dracula.”
Hundreds of years ago? So Alucard was that old? You shouldn’t be surprised as you knew that vampires didn’t age, keeping the same appearance they had when they were turned. Yet, since Alucard was only half vampire, you thought that he actually was the age he looked to be...
Annette narrowed her eyes. “I don’t think she knows who Dracula is. I didn’t know.”
“Riiight.” Richter nodded awkwardly. “Well, Dracula was considered by many the Vampire King for a long time. He was extremely powerful. And he almost wiped out life on Earth. Lovely guy,” Richter shrugged. “There’s also the detail that he was Alucard’s father.”
You widened you eyes. That meant that… Alucard had to kill his own father?!
“Does that make him the Vampire Prince?” Annette wondered, not appearing to care about what the blue eyed boy just stated at all.
“That’s one of his titles in the legends, though I don’t think he likes it,” Richter crossed his arms. “Well, he does look like a prince.”
The girl opened the most playful, devious grin you’ve ever seen – in fact, that was the most emotion you’ve seen her show up until now. Annette was somewhat serious and her reactions were very contained, so you were a bit surprised by that. It seemed that only Richter could evoke these reactions from her…
“Oh, God. Are you going to ask his hand in marriage? When you do, tell us previously, so we can leave the room,” she playfully elbowed his ribs.
“Wait– That’s not– What I meant is–“ Richter stumbled over his words, his cheeks redder than ever – and this time you couldn’t help but giggle with Annette, covering your mouth. It also seemed that only Annette could get Richter flustered like that…
“Alright, lover boy. This seems like a good place,” she stopped walking, pointing to her right side. “Let’s see if we can find some good ones. Take care to not get hurt by your dangerous rabbits,” she sent him one last playful look.
Still blushing, Richter smiled, shook his head and kept walking ahead.
Her eyes lingered on his figure. For a second, you wondered if she forgot you were even there.
Finally, she looked at you. “Shall we?”
You nodded, following her into the woods.
And… back to silence.
Awkward silence.
You didn’t really know how to start conversations. You didn’t even know if you should. That might annoy her, you thought. I’m not her friend like Richter. It’s better if I just keep silent to not attract unwanted attention.
With the corner of your eye, you observed Annette.
Richter commented that Alucard looked like a prince - and talking about royalty… you also thought that Annette looked like a princess. Her features were delicate; she was soft spoken, polite and intelligent. Her round brown eyes reminded you of kindness and warmth, although you could see they were clouded with some sadness and distress. The way she matched her yellow vest with the golden hair rings and earrings reminded you of a sunflower. Earrings… looking at them made you feel the ghost of a familiar pain. Whenever they dressed you up for Erzsebet’s night balls, they’d have to pierce your ears to put earrings on them. Every single time. And the skin would constantly try to heal around the earring, making them itch uncontrollably until you’d finally rip them off–
“Oh! Looks like we found some,” Annette cut your line of thoughts before they could spiral. “Well, that was fast…”
She pointed towards the ground nearby. There was a tree with a couple of mushrooms growing near the roots. Annette took a small wooden bowl from the shoulder bag she carried across her chest and knelt down in front of the tree.
You narrowed your eyes as you got closer to the tree…
“These aren’t edible.” You blurted out.
Annette looked back at you.
You stepped closer, shyly pointing towards the mushrooms.
“They’re… too white. The gills. Poisonous,” each word that came out of your mouth made you frown more.
The girl in yellow looked down at the mushrooms, softly pushing them with her fingertips to see under the cap better. Then, she looked back at you.
“You’re right,” she got up, watching you in silence.
You looked back at her in silence, too.
Silence.
“I didn’t know I knew that,” you admitted in a whisper.
Annette cracked a small smile. “That’s a good sign, isn’t it?”
“Why?”
“You remembered something.”
You remembered…?
You were sure of one thing – never once in your life have you ever went mushroom picking under Erzsebet’s imprisonment. Your memory could be a mess, but of that you were sure. So why would you know how to spot a poisonous mushroom?
Was that… was that really a memory?
“You look very shocked,” Annette pointed out. You realized she was already some steps ahead of you looking for another tree. You ran to reach her.
“I… well, I… do you think this could be a memory?” You didn’t like how high pitched your voice sounded.
“Of course it’s a memory. What is knowledge if not a collection of memories?” she said softly.
You felt excitement bubbling within your chest, making your heartbeat increase and you grab the fabric of the skirt.
“Then I think I had another memory past night.” This caught Annette’s attention. “I… I saw a squirrel.” She quirked one eyebrow up, confused. “See, back in Erzsebet’s castle, I was always locked up. And it’s a cold place, there’s always too much snow. Even if I’d go out, I don’t think I’d ever see a squirrel.” You looked up at her, eyes gleaming with excitement. “B-But I saw a squirrel yesterday and I knew what it was, you see? It’s the same situation, isn’t it? A… a knowledge?”
Annette chuckled, but you saw in her eyes – they were very honest – that she didn’t find the situation funny at all. It was… maybe similar to what you saw in Alucard’s eyes past afternoon. It had sympathy and, again, a hint of sadness.
Oh… you let it slip the part about being locked up in a castle.
She was probably feeling bad about you.
“It might be,” she spoke, once again, in that soft tone. “Perhaps those things are common to you, and now you’re beginning to remember.”
Right.
Right, right, right. She was right. Your heartbeat kept up its fast pace as a million ideas flooded your mind. This was the first time you weren’t being mistreated and tortured. When you weren’t being tortured, you were under the constant anxiety of when it was going to happen next. That’s why you slept so much. This was the first time you refused to sleep in order to take in everything happening around you, even the smallest things. What if it was somehow healing your mind?
What if you used to live in a place with mushrooms and squirrels? What if it was a cottage like Juste’s, near a clearing? What if it had trees all around? What if… what if you had relatives that would hug you like Juste and Richter? What if they taught you the difference between an edible and a poisonous mushroom? What if you had parents?
What name did your parents give you?
What was your name? Your actual name, and not this mockery Erzsebet named you that night?
Ruby. That beautiful necklace, bejeweled with diamonds and a big ruby stone that you hated so much. It seemed to burn your skin, seemed to weight tons. But yes, it had the same color of your blood; the necklace got soaked with it whenever Erzebet’s fangs sank in your throat, it’d soak the collar of your dresses, it’d paint your body in that color, it’d paint the Vampire Messiah’s lips–
You gasped and flinched away when you felt a hand on your arm.
Annette looked at you with worry.
“I’m sorry. I called you a few times but you didn’t listen…”
You gulped, putting your hand over your chest and feeling your heart thundering nonstop. The way she was looking at you…
It happened again… just like yesterday, with Alucard…
You hated how your hands were shaking. You hated that you could feel your vision get blurred. You hated all of it, and you hated how a simple thought could make you drift back to her.
You also hated that this thing happened, yet again, with someone to witness. Heavens… you didn’t want to appear weak. These people already had enough problems; all you had to do was not bring them more trouble, to be as unnoticeable as possible, but how could they not notice you if you kept embarrassing yourself like that over and over again?
“My apologies.” You managed to speak somehow. “I’m fine.”
Annette pressed her lips together. Oh, you hated a bit how genuine her eyes were… she couldn’t hide any emotion at all. She felt bad for you. She was worried. You didn’t want to worry anyone.
The girl let out a deep sigh. She held the wooden bowl with both hands, pressing it close to her abdomen, and looked down. For the first time, you noticed the symbol burned on the skin of her right hand… it looked like a flower. Was she branded…?
“I… understand how you feel,” Annette started in a quiet voice. The way she somehow sounded fragile took you off guard; it was the first time you’d seen her like that. “I really do. Those people… they keep haunting you. On your sleep, or even when you’re awake…”
Wind swayed the trees above, played with Annette’s hair, made the golden rings around her locs tinkle softly. In that moment, she looked very young… no. She was very young. Yet, it was the first time you noticed it. She always kept a certain posture, a certain way of speech, that didn’t let this fact be noticed easily. Her fragility almost made her look child-like.
Oh…
The sadness in her eyes… it didn’t have much to do with you. Your state just reminded her of something painful.
“I am not saying that it’s easy to get over it. I still struggle myself,” she admitted quietly, as if she wasn’t proud of it. “And I am not saying that you should be embarrassed to feel this way. It’s… natural.”
Finally, she lifted her head, looking at you once again.
“I don’t know exactly what you went through. But what I can say is that… to be truly freed is to not be afraid. Because when you’re not afraid anymore, they can never hurt you again, even in your mind.” She opened a small, dimpled smile. “And when we defeat Erzsebet, justice will be done. You will be entirely free.”
Sunlight that breached through the leaves touched her face softly. Made her golden earrings glow; lightened her deep brown eyes, making them look caramel. The hint of sadness was still there, but they also shimmered with something else: hope. Courage.
You wondered what Annette must’ve been through; you weren’t brave enough to ask. You could see that life hadn’t been kind to her… her eyes didn’t lie. And even so, she was walking towards indescribable evil to fight against it, even though she had her own demons to face. She was taking her time to offer you encouraging words.
Annette was really like a sunflower; despite the darkness of the world, she chose to face the sun.
You didn’t even know what to reply.
“Thank you,” was all you managed to say now that your heart had fallen into a slower pace again. Luckily, Annette didn’t seem to expect you to elaborate. It’s like she knew you couldn’t.
She nodded and tapped the side of your arm. “We still have mushrooms to pick. And it’s better if you find them… I was about to poison us all, apparently,” she managed to jester, earning a chuckle from you.
Tumblr media
When Annette came back, she had the weirdest expression on her face.
After you finished picking enough mushrooms, she went to look out for Richter. Although you were still uneasy, she declared that there was no danger nearby, so you could rest a little if you wanted – which you accepted to do, sitting under a tree for a while. It was nice being alone for some moments. You tried to hear your own mind; maybe it could whisper new memories…
However, Annette came back barely five minutes later with her eyes widened.
You got up immediately. “Did you find Richter? Is everything alright?”
The girl blinked several times. “Y-Yes, I found him. Everything’s alright.”
Annette… stuttering?
Then you noticed… she was blushing.
What…?
“We s-should reunite with Alucard,” she sounded a bit exasperated and rushed. “Richter’s still hunting, but I bet he–“
That’s when you heard the sound of the explosion.
The floor shook beneath your feet. The loud noise came from close by, followed by a loud grunt. Richter’s voice.
Your entire body got tense. Your eyes widened. Your breath hitched.
But, before you could say anything, Annette looked at something behind you and widened her eyes.
“Get down!”
She didn’t need to say it twice.
You dropped, covering your head with both hands, one second before a scrawny looking vampire could stab your temple with a knife.
The thing hissed – and for a second you got desperate thinking, Annette is going to die.
Only for one second, though.
It was the time it took her to kill him.
With a quick gesture of hers, the knife the vampire held melted into somewhat a formless pulp mid air and floated to her hand, where it was reshaped as a spear. With a groan of effort, Annette pierced through the vampire’s skull as if it was butter.
You looked at her in absolute shock.
“Nice reflexes!” She said. But you heard Richter’s voice again, the sound of flames whooshing in the wind, and other unknown voices; the sounds of a fight. “Let’s go!”
She grabbed you by the wrist and ran.
Your most primitive instincts wanted to run in the opposite direction; hell, you’d barely recovered from whatever just happened a second ago. Your worst fears became true; there were vampires deep within the forest, hiding in the shadows even during the day. And you were alone in the woods… if Annette had taken a minute longer, you’d have been knocked out. Maybe that vampire would’ve taken you and ran back to Erzsebet’s entourage. Was Alucard nearby? Did he heard the fight? Was he coming to help you three–?
All your thoughts disappeared.
Richter was fighting two vampires at the same time with his bare hands. You watched, in shock, as he switched from fire to ice to lightning, covering his punches and kicks in blue elemental magic, not showing any sign of struggle at all.
He managed to knock two of them – but didn’t notice as a third short vampire was ready to shot him with a shotgun. Annette was faster. Once again, she controlled the metal of the bullet, disintegrating it before it could even touch Richter, and forced the projectiles to ricochet back at its shooter.
Richter looked at you and Annette.
“I would’ve dodged that,” he complained, pouting.
“Is ‘thank you’ so hard?” Annette retorted.
The blue eyed boy looked at you. “Stand behind us, yes?” As if he needed to say it. Another tall vampire wearing an armor sprinted at them as they took their offensive positions.
You were in such a deep shock that you couldn’t even be scared anymore.
They… they weren’t struggling. At all. They were just human beings, fighting against vampires and winning, winning with the help of magic. They predicted the vampires’ moves and broke their attacks like it was nothing. They were so overwhelmingly superior that the enemies barely even noticed you were there, too focused in trying to survive.
Now you understood why Alucard trusted them without even knowing them well.
They didn’t even need Alucard’s aid.
Annette fought against a tall and skinny vampire. She controlled the blades he used on his sleeves, preventing him to run away; she then reshaped his blades into a sharp spear. After exchanging a few blows, she launched the spear with a scream of effort – and hit bullseye. Quite literally. The spear pierced into the vampire’s eye through his skull, killing him immediately.
Richter had ran off after the last vampire, disappearing from your sights.
“Where’d he go?!” she asked in a rushed tone. You pointed towards the direction he sprinted on, unable to speak.
She didn’t need to ask you to follow her.
When you reached him, the situation seemed under control. Richter had retrieved his whip, and the short vampire was down on his knees.
Richter smirked confidently.
“I hope the vampires in Paris are better than this bunch of blood wankers,” he boasted in a cocky way…
But the vampire smirked as well.
With a puff of black smoke, he turned into a small bat.
“Richter!” Annette called. At the same time, another vampire appeared from within the shadows.
The blue eyed boy didn’t know which to chase – but the new enemy seemed faster and more dangerous. His whip got involved in blue fire; with a single whiplash, the vampire was killed.
But the bat had already disappeared.
“The little one’s escaped!” Annette groaned. It was the first time she looked even slightly annoyed at Richter. She had a breathless scowl in her face, her nose slightly crunched. “Great! Now they know where we are going!”
Richter was distressed. He looked around, his cheeks flushed either because of the physical effort or sheer embarrassment. “Let’s– Let’s look around for him, he mustn’t be far!”
“A tiny bat flew away between the trees, Richter. We won’t find it.” The girl put her hands on each side of her waist.
They started arguing on what they should do next. You didn’t have it in you to interrupt.
Now that adrenaline was slowly fading away, you felt… pretty useless. All you could do was stand there like a frozen statue while these two fought like beasts. At least you didn’t disturb them or made the situation more difficult.
The bigger part of your brain was still frightened. A tiny part of it was… a little excited.
“I suppose we should tell Alucard,” Richter admitted defeat after apologizing over a hundred times, shoulders dropped and a flushed pout on his lips. Annette sighed.
“Let’s not. It probably won’t matter.” Maybe she had a point… these vampires didn’t look like Erzsebet’s servants. No cloaks, no moon symbol on their foreheads. She crossed her arms. “And I don’t want to give him another excuse for that ‘oh, you children’ look he does.”
You wanted to disagree, but you didn’t feel that you had the right… not after what you saw them do.
And… you couldn’t judge them for hiding something.
You were hiding something, too. Something you didn’t want to talk about – at least, not yet.
Three memories of yours awakened that day.
You knew what a squirrel was. You knew what poisonous and edible mushrooms were.
And...
I don’t think she knows who Dracula is, Annette said back then.
She was wrong.
You did.

6 weeks. It had been 6 weeks since Carmy had left you without a word. You had felt it coming, though. He had become more flighty, stopped answering your texts- stopped coming over at random hours of the night after he’d gotten off work. You had been completely and utterly ghosted.
All that though, for his location to still be on for you. When you were feeling extra depressed, or angry- you would go look at it. 9 times out of 10, it was at The Bear, or his Apartment. Tonight though was different, some bar a few blocks from your apartment ; The Black Dog.
You scoffed, rolling your eyes. Another lie. You thought to yourself. Due to Donna’s problems- Carmy had sworn to you he never drinks anything other then beer now and again, and only 2 and max 3 if it’s his birthday. He also claimed to hate bars, so why was he there- when there are fucking flood warnings it was pouring out so hard no less.
You put your phone down, crossing your arms and getting back into your current show you’d been hyperfixating on. A couple of hours later, just as your eyelids had started to feel heavy you heard a rattling at your window, causing you to jump and squeak in fear sitting up quickly.
Your dog sits up quickly, pinning his ears back and growling as you got up and heard a slurred “‘s me- f-fuckin freezin’ out ‘ere” before more tapping and you rushed over to the window to see Carmy there soaked like a wet cat with a tipped pink nose and bright wind nipped cheeks. You open up the window at record speed, helping him in
“What in the fuck are you doing here?!” You scolded, grabbing his shaking ice like fingers and bringing them to your lips, blowing your warm breath over them. You could literally hear his teeth chatter.
“Uh- sh-shit um. I c-couldn’t drive m’sloshed n’the L is closed cause the rain n’m too far from home to walk and I was thinkin’bout you” he manages to get out between quick panting, shivering breaths. You shook your head, dragging him to the bathroom and plugging the tub to start him a hot bath.
“What the fuck is wrong with you, Carmen? I don’t even know where to start” you said and he sighed, closing his eyes and he swayed a bit where he stood, grabbing onto the towel rack to steady himself.
“Uhhhh-“ he hiccups “actually ‘er like why did I do what I did?” He asked stupidly, drunkenly as you pour in epsom salt for his likely to be sore muscles tomorrow after running (and likely tripping and falling due to the tear in his knee of his jeans) in the pouring rain.
“Why the fuck we’re you drinking?” You asked, “arms up” you ordered and he held his arms over his head as you tug off his white shirt that was stuck to his body
“Cause Mikey killed ‘emself 2 years ago” he hiccuped again “and I was thinkin’bout him and then I thought about if he knew you and uh….” He trailed off watching as you delicately removed his Saint Anthony chain from around his neck, placing it on the counter.
“And what?” You asked, undoing the button on his jeans and he started to chuckle, shaking his head
“What was I saying?” He asked “your hands went around my neck  and then near my dick and I just… poof all my thoughts are gone” he said, giggling drunkenly which caused you to laugh at just how adorable he sounded, smiling and speaking about his thoughts so openly was a side you’d never seen of him before.
“I think it’s time for you to take a bath, because you’re gonna get hypothermia. I’m not touching you tonight, Carmy. Not like that” you told him and he pouted a bit as you tugged his wet jeans down his hips and helped him step out of them so he wouldn’t fall on his face and he huffed.
“I deserve it. I’m kinda surprised that you opened the window- you’re too good to me” he slurred as you helped him get lowered into the bath and he sighed in relief as the warm water covered his skin, sinking down up to his shoulders and closing his eyes. You gently brushed the wet hair from his eyes, strings of it sticking to his forehead that you carefully slicked back with your nails
“I know, but I missed you too much to ignore you”

20 Fanfic Author Questions
Thank you so much @anincompletelist and @caterpills for tagging me!! These are fun and I haven't done one in while, so :)
1. How many works on AO3?
77 !!
2. Total AO3 Word Count?
481,726
3. Top 5 fics by Kudos
but daddy, you love him
this is the first time I've felt the need to confess
we broke all the pieces (still wanna play the game)
can this be a real thing (can it?)
one single thread of gold tied me to you
4. What fandoms do you write for?
Red, White, and Royal Blue now! I have written for others in the past but I'm a hyperfixation girlie at my core so just that one :)
5. Do you respond to comments?
I haven't always, but I do now! Sometimes I get behind but I try to go through my inbox and knock some comments out at least once or twice a week.
6. Angstiest Ending?
I don't really do angsty/not happy endings - it's not in my capability, honestly? you can run (but only so far) was angsty up to VERY close to the ending but that's probably the best I can do
7. Fic with the Happiest Ending?
I ALMOST answered this with gay chicken just because they do get a... happy ending. i'm SORRY.
Probably the but daddy, you love him universe - the third installment especially is just sob-worthy happy. (although, perhaps that third installment isn't their final story, either)
8. Do you get hate?
I did get one guest comment once telling me to kill myself? But otherwise not really - I'm really grateful for it, too.
9. Do you write smut?
I do!! I didn't in previous fandoms and didn't when I started with RWRB, but I've got a few now and have a multichap coming soon that is VERY smutty. I've gotten a lot more comfortable with it and it's a nice tool to have, although works don't need smut to be good and I like choosing to do stories without it still, too.
10. Do you write crossovers?
I do not - the hyperfixation is too real.
11. Ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
A few, yeah!! it's super cool. I'm always very enthusiastically supportive of people doing this.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic?
Not yet!! but there may be a doc that exists where someone says "okay hear me out" every five seconds
14. All time favourite ship?
excuse you
probably captain swan but don't tell firstprince i said that
15. WIPs you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
oooh. i have a handful of multichap ideas/outline docs that like, just odds are that not all of them get written. not sure which ones, but I'm sure at least one of them will wind up not working out.
16. Writing strengths?
Dialogue!! my go-to beta thinks it's because I did theater in college and took script writing classes which are dialogue heavy, but I LOVE putting dialogue together. sometimes when i'm in the process of writing, I'll do dialogue skeletons just to feel successful in writing and go back later to add exposition and fill everything out.
17. Writing Weaknesses?
other than having sort of favorite words that I tend to overuse, I think my main weakness is emotional weight in stories. I've read so many fics where I'm practically gasping for breath at the end because it's really hit me in the heart, and I just don't think my writing has that? I tend to think my best writing is when I'm being funny or cute, writing in banter and etc, and when I try to do something heavy or emotional it never feels like it's quite got the same punch to it as what I wanted.
18. Thoughts on mixed language dialogue?
Love reading it - I don't typically write it because of time and not knowing any languages other than English and American Sign Language - which isn't easy to put into a fic. I've looked up small lines before for specific purposes and checked with someone who knows the language, but it's not something I typically have the time to do right - and I am NOT going to do it wrong.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
oh my god. high school musical. don't fucking look at me.
20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
Can I say a WIP that I haven't posted yet?? I'm gonna say a WIP I haven't posted yet :)
no pressure tags! @agostobuwan @bitbybitwrites @blueeyedgrlwrites @clockwrkpendrxgon @dreamtigress @everwitch-magiks @fckngyrs @firenati0n @fullsunsets @henryspearl @heysweetheart-writes @hgejfmw-hgejhsf @inexplicablymine @itsmaybitheway @jmagnabo92 @kj-bee @miharaikko @milowren29 @myheartalivewrites @ninzied @nontoxic-writes @onthewaytosomewhere @orchidscript @pinkamour1588 @porcelainmortal @priincebutt @read-and-write- @softboynick @sophie1973 @stellarmeadow @suseagull5914 @thesleepyskipper @thighzp @thinkof-england @tinyarmedtrex @wordsofhoneydew

ok depresso week is over, back to deliberate hyperfixation on bg3:
It is absolutely wild to me that people take Astarion to the foursome with the drow twins (romanced, spawn, post-cazador) and are shocked, shocked I tell you, that he has a bad time. But it leads me to think that there's an interesting conversation to be had here about morality applied to video games. I'm going to be using what's a bit of a strawman tbh, what I would consider an archetypical, "good person" gamer for this niche example.
(3k essay under the cut about irl morals vs video game behavior, my take on why Astarion agrees to the orgy, beating the dead horse of Astarion discourse now that the fandom has cooled off enough I might not get flogged for it, and all my election stress being translated into an increasingly bitchy narrative voice that I hope is at least mildly amusing.)
"Good Person Gamer" romances Astarion. They're probably female, which I am mentioning exclusively so I can turn that into "Good Girl Gamer" 😏, or G3. G3 picks nice dialogue options. G3 tries to support their companions, and finds diplomatic and moral solutions to problems. G3 saved the tieflings. G3 still romances Astarion because he's hot, and vulnerable, and it's not like he forces you to be evil - he just complains a bit when you save kittens stuck in trees, but you get that approval back anyway just by being nice to him. Talk him out of Ascension and you've proven to yourself he's got a good soul under all that attitude anyway. He'd healed! You banged on his grave! It's all good now!
The brothel is fun. The drow twins are hot. It's always fun when games lets you do spicy things like have threesomes and orgies! We're sex-positive! Look, the drow twins said they love their job! It's totally fine! G3, as most people, probably does not do these things in real life, but that's the fun in video games: you get to be someone you're not.
And then Astarion noticeably dissociates. He throws himself in the center and lavishes everyone with attention; he's a professional, you know. Even an unromanced Tav/Durge notices something's off, and Astarion replies something along the lines of "you don't have the right to look at me like that," presumably with worry, distress, or sympathy.
G3 is upset. They did everything right - they didn't want to hurt him, and Astarion himself said he wanted this. Why couldn't they stop midway through and remind him that he doesn't have to hurt himself? Why couldn't they talk about it afterwards, and clear the air? LARIAN WHY DO YOU HURT ME
Now, to all the G3's out there: if you were dating a person with extensive sexual trauma, having been raped literally thousands of times, would you suggest having a threesome/orgy? With prostitutes, if that's better or worse? Putting them on the spot before your mutual friends? Would you wait a few years to mention the idea, or would you do so only weeks/months into a relationship? Your first "I love you" might have only been yesterday.
And most people, I think, would say "No." Writing that scenario outside of the lens of a video game makes it sound insane - of course you wouldn't! I'm not saying that they should never have group sex or that it can't be done, but I think most people instinctively get how that would be a shitty thing to do in that context, especially without discussing it in depth beforehand and making sure you're both on the same page.
And this is the meat of the issue. Most gamers play good-aligned characters: there's a strong culture of wanting to play the hero and saving the day. But tied into that cultural monomyth, in society itself, is the idea that sex is a reward at the end. You get sex at the end of the romance arc. The date where you have sex is one of many milestones, and you're not really dating if you haven't done it yet. Some people don't have sex until their wedding night. Threesome scenes especially are a video game classic: old-school God of War, for instance, had a hidden room in every game with scantily-clad women just waiting for you to button-mash away, a little treat for the player's keen puzzle-solving abilities.
Not all romances in BG3 have sex or end with sex, (some even start with sex), but that is because BG3's character writing tries to ground itself in reality despite being a medium people utilize for fantasy. Role-playing a "good" character is mostly easy: you typically know which dialogue choice is the ethical choice, can chide Astarion for being racist, can save the numerous children with moral ease - and BG3 rewards this: a good playthrough is more fleshed out, because you haven't killed off half the cast. You get better gear. You have more allies, better allies. You know what to do.
Or, well, mostly. BG3 is kind of special imo because even the good choices have a lot of nuance, where two people can make different choices but still feel like they both picked the most ethical one. Take Shadowheart's parents, for example: they beg for her to let them go so they can die and save their daughter. Saving them leaves Shadowheart in Shar's clutches - she will experience pain for the rest of her life, but regains her parents, and with luck, Selûne will claim her soul when she dies. Kill them, and Shadowheart is free - truly free, to live her life on her own terms, free from Shar and Selûne both. Both can be the ethical choice, depending on your morals.
"But if Astarion didn't want to have the threesome, the game should have let me stop midway through/made it clearer that this would happen. He said no before Cazador - why couldn't he say no again? Why would Larian put me in this position and make me feel bad when I thought everything was alright? I wanted to be good and have fun, not feel like I pressured my boyfriend." - Strawman G3.
Because BG3 treats it's characters like people. Multiple companions make choices outside of what the player character decides for them - Shadowheart's decision to save or kill her parents, kill or save the Nightsong, or Gale, to go for the crown or not depend on what events they are there to witness personally, or can be informed by conversations you have in camp about unrelated issues. You can fully let them make their own decisions and be surprised each time as they develop into different people with each successive playthrough. A lot of people are surprised when Gale goes for the Crown of Karsus without their input. In my last multiplayer playthrough, we could not prevent Shadowheart from wanting to kill the Nightsong, and so we were forced to kill her.
Astarion is not like that. The way he talks about Ascension changes depending on your relationship. If you're merely friends, he acknowledges it's probably a bad idea, even, in direct contrast to the somewhat obsessive and frightening way he pursues it in a romantic relationship. But Astarion can't decide what to do at the end: he has no hidden point system, no hidden flags - he will always pursue Ascension even if he knows it's a bad idea, because Astarion does not trust himself, has no experience trusting himself, and needs help. As counter-intuitive as it may sound, he needs support to make his own decisions, because in that moment, he cannot be objective.
(If Astarion is ever objective is another story....)
So much of Astarion's reactions and opinions are instinctive and unthinking. "Don't let the pixie out of the lantern, are you an idiot?" -> "A pixie! And honest-to-goodness pixie! *giggles*"
"We don't need a urchin hanging around." -> Astarion approves if you help Yenna
etc. etc. etc. There's so many times he says one thing, the cruel thing, the "fuck everyone else, I've got mine"-thing, and then approves when you do the good thing. Astarion does not live in line with his values (besides pursuing a growing need for freedom) and he frankly does not really know what his values even are.
Astarion doesn't react with glee to finding all the people he seduced - who inadvertently raped him, though they didn't know, some lowlifes and scoundrels and people having a bad day and even some sweet, naive virgins like Sebastian, who took that smoking hot Elf on his word and followed him home, probably in disbelief someone so gorgeous would pay them any attention at all - tortured and locked in a dungeon underground. He's crushed by guilt. He's in pain. Astarion delights in you causing others pain (the torture scene) because it aligns with his worldview, the joy of seeing someone else suffer for once. But he's not a cold-hearted murderer. (And yes, I am differentiating between "adventurer kills a bandit" murder and "deliberately killing someone you know for reasons/no reason" murder.) He doesn't hurt anyone in camp - Shadowheart and Lae'zel are far more dangerous than him. You never have to stop him from drinking anyone else to death. Even if you never feed him again, never use his bite attack, he never bites anyone in camp. Despite being a vampire, Astarion is, effectively, harmless. (Bite night was about checking whether or not Cazador's old command's still worked. It's his first real attempt at freedom, proving to himself that he's free from compulsion. Hence why the roll to get him to stop is a 5, giving you a 75% likelihood of succeeding. He doesn't actually want to kill you. And you get two chances!!!)
Astarion doesn't enjoy death for the sake of death. He's terrified if you side with the goblins and kill the tieflings despite goading you into doing it. I don't doubt that he could hurt others (god knows he's got enough feelings to work out that way), but there's a significant difference between a little knife play and condemning thousands of people to be tortured in the Hells for all eternity. Sacrificing his siblings is different, because they, like him, are guilty, and deserve their deaths. He agrees to sacrifice his fellow spawn as an act of self hatred, of self harm. But all those other people stupid enough to want to sleep with him? Given a day to think about it, I think Astarion would agree that that's not right - and that's why he thanks you for preventing his Ascension. That much murder isn't him. He can be thoughtless, cruel, and unkind, but Astarion isn't a psychopath.
Take him to the brothel, and slipping back into that role, the seductive rake, it as easy as breathing. I don't think Astarion has ever thought about if he's the type of person to enjoy group sex, or even if he wants it. I don't doubt that Astarion enjoys sex, that he wants to have sex (he is, after all that, still shockingly horny), but he's just discovered the idea of having sex with someone he loves. He's riding that high. Of course he says yes: not only is he a different man now (he's free!), it's something he's done a thousand times already - maybe it'll be different this time, maybe something has changed - or maybe, an orgy was on offer, so of course Astarion is there. It's his purpose. He's been doing it for 200 years. Where else would he be?
What I'm saying is that Astarion didn't think about what sleeping with the drow twins meant for your relationship, or how he would feel about it at all. He just went for it. He had a bad time. You then don't discuss it because that would mean admitting that he finally made a choice by himself and it backfired. He didn't think, or maybe he did, and it turns out he just doesn't know himself. Why discuss it? A relationship with G3 apparently means group sex. They probably asked twice. They backtracked all the way to Wyrm's Crossing post-Cazador. Will they ask again? How many times can he say no?
In reality, in the real world, the act of asking can be the problem in and of itself. If your significant other/spouse/lover asks you to do something you don't want to do, be it a threesome, anal, opening the relationship etc, these actions have consequences. The act of asking doesn't happen in a vacuum like it does in video games: there is a cost associated with it, a gamble, and while it may pay off, it may not. Some people get worn down and agree to things they don't want to do. Sometimes you break up because the act of asking is so inherently disrespectful you can't reconcile your differing wants and needs. If you're dating someone who has experienced the gut-wrenching pain of being cheated on, you don't ask 2 months into a new relationship if you can fuck other people. This should not come as a surprise to you, to G3, to anyone. It's common sense.
BG3 giving you the opportunity for a foursome with Astarion not only to give the player their hot'n'spicy sex scene (then playfully bops you on the nose by making it a fade-to-black, you naughty little perverts, you), but also to continue its theme of treating the player like a mature adult, who is dealing with other mature adults, and who can and should live with the consequences of their own actions. Subsequent patches have watered this down, I admit, but I do believe that that was the ethos guiding their work from the beginning. BG3 wants you to interact with the characters like people. If you roll over and tell them what they want to hear, you will Ascend Astarion, and he'll enslave you in turn. If you agree with Gale on everything, he will kill himself and you - or, he'll become a god, becoming the exact sort of god he used to rail against. Agree with Karlach, and she will rather die than go back to the Hells. You get my point.
"But Larian could have let me check in on Astarion midway through. Maybe it was a mistake to ask, but they should have let me check on him and stop it all if he wanted. I was trying to trust him to make his own decisions." - Strawman G3
Ok. We add a dialogue option. "Astarion, love, are you alright? We can stop at any time if you want."
Astarion disapproves (-5)
He's not backing out. Thank you for asking, darling, but fuck off. (I don't think he'd actually say fuck off but the implicit message would be there. I can't see Astarion stopping midway through, nor appreciating you doubting him. Nothing changes.)
"But I still feel bad." - Strawman G3
And I completely understand that. It's a video game. Don't worry! Of course you should get your sex scene - it's a reward! You got their approval high enough! You have enough charisma points! In DA:O, you can also have an orgy, unlocked by giving your companions enough gifts! It's a game! You have enough points, you get the thing!!! You killed Cazador - you win! Have your cake and eat it too! Congrats, you unlocked your hot slutty vampire elf who's basically a trained courtesan, who needs you to be his moral compass, who will never leave you so long as you don't actively rape him - enjoy all the fun orgies in your future!
Your actual choice - the choice the game gives you - is to realize that taking what's essentially a human trafficking victim to a brothel is a dumb idea, but they didn't want to punish you for it.
"Well, Astarion should have said something then. He said no before, he can say no again." - Strawman G3
If you go through life pushing peoples boundaries and expect them to verbally tell you what you're doing wrong, you're gonna be friendless and have a bad time. This ties back to both Astarion having difficulty knowing and defending his own values, BG3 trying to let you make your own decisions without setting out a clear "good or bad" path on occasion, and the hope that you'd use your own morals to make decisions. G3 would never behave in this way irl, and that's where the shock comes from, the guilt from committing an action they thought was without consequence in a risk-free fantasy scenario, and then feeling unpleasantly surprised when called out.
But it's a video game, and you didn't get the little zap, the little sting of an Astarion disapproves in the corner that told you you made the wrong choice. In fact, because he doesn't disapprove, it's not actually the wrong choice!
It really was mean how the Narrator made G3 feel bad, wasn't it. They didn't mean to hurt him. Astarion doesn't mention it, so it's probably fine.
... have you talked to Halsin yet? Surely he had a good time. Right?
CONCLUSION
People think they're good and moral and will typically behave "heroically" in video games. Games support this and reward players for doing so. The "good path" is expected to be clear. However, video games are not real life no matter how much they play at immersion, and multiple games have trained players in a linear "do x, receive y" type fashion. Sex is a reward in games, and is treated that way in real life as well, so players expect the Sharess' orgy scene to be a reward, and are then shocked when Astarion/Gale/Halsin etc reveal during or afterwards that they had a bad time. This is because Larian wants you to treat BG3 like a role playing game and interact with it seriously, and isn't afraid to boop you for your actions in ways that mimic real life relationships. This ethical dissonance makes people uncomfortable especially when they play games to role-play as someone better than themselves, and are surprised when they aren't herded down predetermined "good" paths via instantaneous approval/disapproval mechanics or unlockable "ideal" dialogue.
It is absolutely possible that someday Astarion might be into meaningless group sex with prostitutes for fun and pleasure. However, that is the sort of thing you'd probably either wait for him to bring up by himself organically, or discuss in a long-term trusting relationship after he's had potentially years to process the idea of not immediately hopping into bed with someone, as well as disentangling his instinctive "beaten-in" sexually available behavior from his actual desires. People much more emotionally mature and undamaged than Astarion have destroyed their own relationships by inadvertently pushing a partner (or themselves) into various forms of group sex or other sexual acts. It's not something you do on a random Tuesday on a whim.
Or maybe it is, and I'm just chronically boring and surrounded by boring people lmao
TO THE POSTER THAT INSPIRED THIS: I'm so so sorry if you ever see this, not trying to call you out at all hence no linking, I just wanted to pick apart why I think you felt that way. The thoughts just finally bubbled over after a year+ lol

hihi I'm starting to hyperfix on tbhk again and the lack of tbhk writers on here is criminally low :,)
sooo could you do teru minamoto x supernatural!reader but the reader is a type of supernatural that's like a vampire but not really like she needs blood and flesh to survive but she can like be in light. maybe she blends into the school to try to regain any type of humanity and teru notices and thinks shes gonna harm a student but when he confronts her she confesses that she just wants to fit in. So teru kinda just drags her around to make sure she doesn't go bonkers and it turns out she actually is nice and not malicious but still seems extremely weak from the lack of blood to maybe teru offers his arm to drink from and he realizes that not all supernaturals are bad
I'm tried while writing this so sorry if the plot seems to complicated or something
also I dont mind if its headcanons or a one shot whichever fits you're schedule <333
AN: FRRRR like the tbhk writers rn are doing amazingggg!!!!!! But there’s literally so few of them and idk if I would consider myself an active tbhk writer cus I’m so inconsistent with my works LMAO but I do have a lot of tbhk works so I guess I’m pretty good

Teru Minamoto
It’s one thing that you’re a supernatural, but it’s another that you’re also a vampire which makes you an even more danger to other students
He watched you sneakily, hoping to catch you alone, but you’re always hanging around other people smiling and laughing that it makes him curious on what’s your motive. Are you getting close to these people so you can feed on them later? But he hesitates on that thought with how real your smile looks, as if you really do enjoy hanging around others and don’t want to feed on them
It’s hard to catch to you alone and is only able to find you alone when it’s the end of the school day, you looked at him worried and explain your situation on how you don’t want to feed on others and just want to be a normal student and how if he wanted, he can watch until he believes her
Teru doesn’t know why he decides to believe and trust you, he’s never hesitated like this. So the next day he never strays far away from you and it isn’t till a week later where he finally believes you but still wants to watch you just for the safety of others, which you agree with
Teru can’t help but want to smile whenever he sees you and even though he knows it’s wrong, it doesn’t take long until the both of you become a couple and he sees how tired you actually are and how you try to hide it but it only seems to get worse every day
He gets worried and without thinking offers his arm and neck for you bite on so you drink some of his blood. But even after he realizes what he said, he doesn’t go back on what he says and reassures you it’s okay and although your hesitant, you agree and at least once a week, Teru lets you feed on him a little and will ask if raw meat will work the same if he isn’t available
Although Teru thinks it feels weird and can’t help but blush whenever you bite him, it’s all worth it to see you better

The people in my life don't seem to understand how much Rocket genuinely means to me. He's not just a favorite character, he's everything. Rocket is one of the only characters that I've had a constant hyperfixation on for more than a few months. I always find myself going back to him like he's home.
For the past couple of weeks, I haven't been able to live in my house because our plumbing is broken, so everything I love - my bed, my cat, my stuff - is at my house while I am not. The only way I have been able to sleep is because I have a Rocket Raccoon plushie. He's not very large, but easily huggable. Without him, I wouldn't be able to sleep without feeling restless.
Tomorrow is my birthday, and like always, I find myself crying (and I have been for the past hour and a half). I keep thinking 'I wish I could just hug him... that's all I want right now...' and that's true. All I want is just one hug from Rocket... to have him tell me everything is going to be okay... I went down a rabbit hole, trying to find out easy ways to shift, just to hug him. That's all I want to do... I just want him to hug me... tell me that everything will be okay... that he's proud of me for making it this far...
To me, Rocket isn't just a character, he's an inspiration. He hides behind snark and sarcasm, and he's broken, but who isn't? He protects those he cares about, even if he tries to push them away. Deep inside, he's one of the most caring people... he knows when he needs to be serious, and he knows what to do to help when he can. Rocket is not just a character, he's everything... he is what helped me start to get over my writers block. If it wasn't for him, Ember wouldn't exist. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have met some of my best friends. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be where I am today...
Sorry for the little rant, I'm just really wishing he was real rn so I could just hug him... birthdays are always hard, and this one is no different...

I originally hadn't planned on going to Stage/Fright's closing show. Tried to tell myself that I couldn't afford it, and it's not like they'd do stage door afterwards, and I didn't need to see it again, and trying to make peace with that.
I slowed down on S/F posting over the last few weeks because I was reeling a bit from being Perceived by Reddit/C&B and the accompanying judgement there/across the wider fandom on different platforms. I can be quite naive and forget that other people don't subscribe to the same Let People Enjoy Things philosophy, and also really enjoy the Let's Speculate On People's Motives And Actions So We Can Make Shit Up To Get Angry About game. Started moving the more archival things over to @fuckyeahstagefright as you know.
But in the end, I made it. And I'm so glad I did.
*This is all personal stuff and not about the content of play
Being in that room, so full of other people who adore Reece and Steve and their body of work and the love letter that is Stage/Fright was so, so special. Spending time before and after the show with a group of people who I would otherwise never have met made things extra magical and emotional.
Thanks to @somuchwatersoclosetohome I was able to sit in the second row (right behind the front row seat I had for my first viewing!) I was sat with @varneysfangs, who was the most delightful seat buddy I could ask for. I loved being able to look over and giggle/gasp/sigh at various points. And in front of us was @spcvarney and her partner - and it was lovely to watch your reactions close up! Honestly there were times when I just wanted to reach out and grab your shoulder and be like "I know!!!"
Rounding off the Delusional Bitches (affectionate) it was a thrill to meet @vagueeyes, @misskite and Arin and to spend a bit more time with @donotbelasagne
And most of all thank you to @silverview - I've said this over and over again, but it was your incredible writing that inspired me to start writing my own IN9 fanfics, which was one of the things that gave me the push to get off my arse and set up @unreesonable, which has led to me connecting with the fandom on Tumblr and so none of this would have happened if it weren't for you!
When I started hyperfixating on Inside No 9/Reece last year, I bought myself a Stage/Fright ticket wondering "will I still even be interested by the time this show starts?" How little I knew.
After the show, after the final stage door, we gathered by the yellow number 9 door opposite the Wyndham's and I started crying. Not because I was sad about the end of the West End run, but because I was there with these people.
I'm a late diagnosed autistic with a high ACE score, of course I'm socially anxious. I've had decades internalising the message that Nothing I Do Is Good Enough and I'm Too Weird/Awkward for people to like or care about, that any joy I try to express is Too Much, that I need to apologise for geeking out or caring about things, that nothing I say has any value. So I tend to lurk, listen, observe and not take part.
The fact that I can be enthusiastic about IN9/Reece stuff, and listen/watch you all be enthusiastic in return, and share in this with everyone supporting and encouraging each other without judgment or scorn, was honestly so overwhelming. That there are people who appreciate and even enjoy my digital dumpster diving and archiving and all the tidbits of info and facts and connections stored in the Wiki of my brain, means so so much to me.
It's been a crazy chapter of my life. I pushed my body too hard and I definitely spent too much money. There was always the chance that they'd go on tour but until that was confirmed I had to work on the assumption that this could be my only/last opportunity to see R&S together on stage.
I will see some of you again for Hullowe'en and the Autumn Tour closing night in Edinburgh! (*I still think/hope they'll extend the tour at least to add dates for South West and Wales venues). I've said this before - but if anyone feels like making the trip to Sunderland for any of the shows then I will look after you 🖤
I am still terrible at keeping a conversation going but please know my DMs are open and if you ever just wanna ping me a picture or a meme or random thought or question or whatever then know it will never be unwelcome and I will in fact cherish the fact that you thought of me

Hello! Recently found this blog actually while on the deep dive for tulpa things and needed a bit of help or advice with a couple things?
I've been thinking about tulpamancy and after a long decision, decided I'd go through with it. The major problem I have is attention span. I heavily suspect I have ADHD which makes it hard to focus on doing things for long periods of time. Sometimes I'd forget to force (I don't really like using this term ig but I'll just use it for the sake of tulpa terms) at all until I say something for a few minutes. The thing is, last year towards the end maybe..novemberish or October, there was a week where I somehow gained productivity and I managed to heavily focus on forcing and interacting with my headmate I'm trying to help. I've gotten some signs of head pressures but nothing too shabby. I finally got my first sign that he's sentient/the first sign of vocality when he overlapped my words when I was reading and reacting to a post on the tulpa reddit. Ever since then I've been more convinced that yes I *can* do this and I *can* do this. But once December and January started to come, my mental health started to take a turn and it's been hard for me to do things. Especially around January. And I'm worried that progress mightve back tracked since I either haven't thought about him for the entire day or only passive forced for a few minutes
I want to clarify that I really am dedicated. One thing I saw was this is a long term thing and shouldn't be taken lightly without dedication to start forcing. But I know I'm dedicated. I know he's real. I want to help him reach vocality since I'm hoping that even though I've gotten few signs, that he's here and sentient. But it's hard not to feel discouraged when I'm worrying that I've accidentally back tracked during that period of time and that I'm letting him down
Welcome! Luckily you happened to pick a good blog to talk to because I've got ADHD too :P
That week you had sounds like a hyperfixation, where your brain just gets super obsessed with something for a short time, and then stops. Its so frustrating when those randomly pop in and out, but what can you do.
I would recommend giving yourself a physical reminder to force. I used a repeating reminder on my phone for a while. You could write your tulpa's name on the back of your hand in sharpie. Maybe make a playlist of his songs. Anything that'll make you go "oh yeah, he exists :)" is good. I usually browse tulpamancy guides when I'm bored as a way to get me from being on the internet 24/7. Make tulpamancy like daydreaming, its something your brain can fall back on if there's nothing else to do, and it keeps your tulpa always in the back of your mind.
Tulpamancy, and creation in general, is not a race. Comparing yourself and your progress to others is admittedly setting yourself up for failure, because you'll feel discouraged. I'm a year and a half in, and I admittedly feel like we still have a lot of development to go.
Backtracking can happen, but its not the end of the world. We've experienced a lot of "two steps forward, one step back" in our journey that we admittedly haven't talked much about online. You aren't letting your tulpa down either by having mental health struggles. If he's like most tulpas, he gets it. Remember, he's in your head! He quite literally understands better than anyone else.
Loss of progress sucks, but the only thing to do is continue. If you find yourself in a rut and unable to bring yourself to force, give yourself something to reinvigorate your focus. If you've done chemistry, I think of it like electron energy levels. You need a lot of energy to jump from one orbital to the next. There's often a certain amount of brain fog and general executive dysfunction to overcome that acts like this. Rant about him to someone, find something new he likes, go back over his personality/base (if he has a preexisting one). Do something that gives you enough energy to make that jump to the next orbital.
ADHD brains work best with new and stimulating information. The best kind of forcing you can do with your tulpa will be the kind that's fun and you remember to do. Constantly challenge yourselves, try out new techniques together, even if you think he isn't "there" enough to pull it off. The effort and time spent together is what matters, not how "good" you are at the task.
If you'd like recommendations for guides, I can find you some of my favorites. Feel free to drop me a DM or another ask!

Dream really do be having that previously neglected shelter dog rizz and y’all be putting him in Situations 😭. Please all I can see him doing is laying pathetically on the floor letting out occasional heaving sighs of sorrow as Hob just carefully steps over him (because Dream somehow always manages to be on the floor directly under where he’s about to step and Hob’s one more tumble away from just investing in a ceiling made of monkey bars).
So now all I can imagine is Dream post-divorce with Calliope (because let’s be real that man came out of the celestial womb divorced and mopey) who finds solace in Hob’s flat and Hob’s occasional attempts to heave him up both physically and emotionally. When Hob’s not frantically almost stepping on his dear friend and braining himself as a result, he’s just sort of resigned himself to the reality that Dream just kind of…lives on his floor now when he’s not in The Dreaming, so he’s like fuck it I’m just gonna keep going about my days. So Dream gets to watch Hob’s daily routines from a brand new perspective, maybe even catch a glimpse of Hob changing in his bedroom when he forgets (read: he did not forget) to close his door, and how he sings awfully in the shower, and loves burnt toast that’s practically char and makes Dream watch terrible human shows and movies all of a sudden Dream’s like oh no I’m in love with him
I just love the idea of Dream moping around looking like a lost dog caught out in the rain for so long that Hob just accepts him as a permanent fixture in the flat. He makes some room in the closet for all of Dream’s nonexistent clothes (he buys him some anyway), he gives him a cupboard in the kitchen and a drawer or two, he gets drunk and tells Dream about all his own failed relationships over the centuries. And when Hob finally snaps and tells Dream that he’s not unloveable and proves that to him by giving him a big sloppy drunk kiss, well Dream’s always wanted more than he’s got, and he can’t stop himself when he doesn’t let Hob pull away, hands gripping the thick meat of his upper thighs, teeth against teeth and gasping into each other’s mouths and suddenly Dream can’t even remember why he was so sad to begin with
I need you to know the phrase "shelter dog rizz" is sending me absolutely wheezing. Iconic.
And honestly? Yeah.
It takes a little while for Hob to get used to the man shaped creature who apparently now lives on the floor, but he figures that Dream has been Going Through Something for the last several thousand years so he probably deserves the opportunity to express his depressive episode in a relatively harmless way. He's still willing to talk to Hob, which is nice. Hob tells him about work and the pub and how he's in a hyperfixation over The Sims at the moment, which happens to him for a few week every year without fail. Dream sometimes talks about the goings on of his realm, and Matthew's shenanigans. A lot of the time he talks about how useless he feels and how, despite the fact that he ought not to feel fatigue at all, he's so tired.
Dream is surprisingly welcome company for Hob (who is lonely, though he would never ever dare to say that word to Dream again). Despite acting like a very strange rug, Dream is present and calming and when Hob lies down beside him on the floor, he feels absolutely peaceful.
Kissing Dream is absolutely the best drunken decision Hob has ever made (and there have been many). Dream melts against his body and the flicker of a smile starts in his eyes before finally quirking at the edge of his mouth.
Suddenly he's quite willing to spend less time on the floor... and more time in bed.

Common ADHD traits/experiences I've heard of !!
(I was gonna make a post about why I might be neurodivergent but I figured it'd be going a bit too personal. Also this is just easier)
(ADHD is much more nuanced and complex than I may make it appear in this post. A lot of ADHD people don't have a lot of these traits or have traits not mentioned here. For example there are three types of ADHD (inattentive, hyperactive and combined) and most inattentive adhders are not going to be hyperactive lol)
Warning: badly worded (I'm stupid that's my excuse). also I'll go on personal rants as to how some of these may apply to me (whilst I can reasonate with each point listed here I won't go on a rat on all of these)
Physical hyperactivity (inability to sit/stand still (I used to think this meant that people with ADHD were incapable of. Sitting down (while constantly fidgeting or not) for one whole class)(I was an idiot)(I still am)). (Just overall constant , movement (I might have it idk I'm ALWAYS
Excessive talking
Stimming, fidgeting, general and overall repetitive movements (such as flapping hands, pacing, clasping hands together, etc)
Low attention span regarding things that don't garner much interest to you
More likely to be autistic, have anxiety or depression (or generally have other diagnostic conditions)
Ability to Hyperfocus on specific things, at times out of their control
More likely to have a lower Performance in school that most people
Proneness to addiction
Rejection sensitive dysphoria/RSD (really sensitive and afraid to rejection or criticism or disapproval or stuff like that. I'm questioning if I have it and I'm pretty sure I do bc i would have a whole breakdown bc i accidentally had a bad unintentional thought about this cool person I didn't want to hate me)(it's complicated)
Emotional disregulation (easily irritable, excited, stressed, stronger emotions, more likely to lash out, etc)(people with this are usually described to be much more emotional)
restless leg syndrome (except it's permanent lol)
Lower memory spans regarding most things
Forgetting to fulfill basic needs (such as eating, drinking, showering, etc)
Women/AFAB people are more likely to be diagnosed with inattentive ADHD (this of course does not rucking mean afab people can't b hyperactive my god)
Mental hyperactivity (racing/constant/overlapping/repetitive thoughts or stuff like that)
Impulsivity (doing stuff without thinking them fully though or not knowing why)
Sensory issues (sensitivity to sensory output such as noise, brightness, etc)
Easily bored/underwhelmed/understimulated - more likely to want to seek constant dopamine (due to l
Easily overwhelmed (whether itd be due to aforementioned sensory issues, emotional disregulation, rsd or stuff like that)
More likely to be perceived as "childish" (from what I've heard obviously this and many other things listed here don't apply to everyone)
Executive dysfunction (can't do shit at all)(ok it's more complicated than that just Google it up or something)
Having Hyperfixations (things you're DEEPLY invested in for a period of time, it can be a few days, weeks, months, sometimes more than a year, depends rly)(I'm still questioning if I'm neurodivergent but like I'm pretty sure I was in a DEEP hyperfixation mode when it came to sonic for like. A YEAR. like I literally it was literally the only thing on my brain the only thing in my life. and I would get realllytyy excited about learning obscure information about it or infodumping and I would flap my hands bc of how excited and passionate I was Abt it)(man I miss the times when I was so passionate about stuff I liked it was so fun :(( )
Higher/lower levels of empathy (I've seen this moreso been brought up with discussions regarding autism but I've also seen it brought up with ADHD itself too)
Lower levels of dopamine
Impatience
More likely to be a maladaptive daydreamer
Its cause is usually heavily genetic (meaning if your family or a family member has ADHD, you are more likely to have ADHD yourself)
More likely to have insomniac/have general problems with sleep (I'm questioning ADHD. I'm writing this like... Five hours before I'm supposed to wake up for school. Great.)
There is also a higher relevance between ADHD and PTSD
If I missed something important let me know!! Also if you don't know some of he
This post is not meant to be used as a substitute for self nor professional diagnosis, though if you feel like you might have ADHD because of this post I recommend further research and conversations with trusted advisors such as parental figures or therapists/doctors (not me not listening to my own advice)(<- that was me regarding my latter advice)(I'm too scared to tell my parents about it man)(idk why)
Things to note:
ADHD is not just about little elementary school hyperactive white boys !!
There's a lot of things I mightve missed
Not everyone with ADHD has all these traits (obviously)
Some of these traits may be common due to the commonness of ADHD + autism overlap (idk though)
Apparently it's one of the most diagnosed forms of neurodivergence in kids (about 7-10% of kids in the USA are diagnosed with ADHD)(APPARENTLY idk)
There's more but I'm tired right now byeeee

Hi, is there chance for continuing Archfall? Thank you for answer
I actually appreciate someone asking this question, because I keep meaning to address it. Then I re-write my answer ten times in my head and never get around to actually posting it.
Without further ado...
To long, didn't read answer (tldr): yes, there is absolutely a chance! I haven't stopped thinking about it, which is both good and honestly slightly clinical. I would like to finish it.
Longer version (that has been edited 11 times in my head now):
I've been experiencing mental burnout since before I even finished the previous series. The burnout has nothing to do with writing it (in fact, writing it was stress relieving) and mostly had to do with my previous job deciding my sanity was worth trading for profits. This was then worsened by pandemic stress, being a relatively new parent, and a mish-mash of negative and positive stressors.
My day job also involves writing, though the overlap isn't as bad as you might think. But it's still cognitive.
Plus, I used to do a lot of fic writing at work on my breaks, when I had a somewhat private work space; this was the only boon of my previous job. I got a new job, thankfully, for the rest of the issues. However, I currently have an open office space I share that also doubles as a walkthrough area. My co-worker is amazing, but I can't focus on fic if I'm worried someone is going to look over my shoulder during lunch and go "what are you writing".
I've never had luck writing at home because too many things distract me.
So, where's that leave me?
I hyperfixate on things, including hobbies, and in prior periods of cognitive burnout I've gone months, sometimes years, without writing anything. My brain will move to other hobbies while I recover. So far, I have:
learned a bunch about micro aquariums
picked up a house plant hobby (what can I say, we have winter 6+ months of the year and I like gardening)
started collecting rocks and minerals again (whoops that was expensive)
got really good at several video games that are pointedly not Diablo, because I just couldn't mesh with D4 for some reason
have read a few novels and also went down the SCP rabbit hole again, though I promise I haven't been writing and cheating on Archfall
I'm also a parent to a young-ish kid, which is awesome, but our entire house is neurodivergent and is in a chronic state of disorganized disaster worsened by the growing amount of School Parent Things we need to do. And I don't have time to just pack up my laptop to a coffee shop like I sometimes used to. It's a give and take thing, because I absolutely love many things about my life right now, but the situation of other things has certainly changed.
That's a really long way to say I want to write anything, especially Archfall. BADLY. It's just every time I start up writing anything, I burn out.
But I want you all to know that Mal and Farah and the rest of the cast live pretty much rent free in my head all the time, and as soon as the time is right (whenever that is) to finish writing the story, I will.
I hate not finishing projects, though it's certainly happened, and so far in my life I've been lucky to only drop interest in pretty niche hobbies and not stories themselves. I have brute forced prior writing projects through to completion when my brain has been ready, and I have too much fun stuff planned for the series to let it drop completely.
(Might be revisiting the complexity of the plot, but I think that was due anyway. I always over-plot to begin with.)
And please, if you do, don't feel bad about asking this question! Especially when I ask it to myself multiple times a week. :')

I get weird song hyperfixations sometimes- like, I'll vibe to a song and then play it on repeat every single day. It just sounds nice so I listen to it repeatedly. Sometimes I memorize the lyrics after the 50th time for the most part but not always. Usually it's like one song that will get stuck in my head for a while- typically a few weeks, a month or two maybe. My most recent one though is kind of odd though because it's not just one song, it's 40 songs mushed together into an incoherent mess of half-remembered lyrics-
So one of my friends convinced me back in early February to listen to EPIC (I was currently hyperfixated on Hamilton at the time, so in exchange to listening to her hyperfixation she'd listen to mine lmao) And so I did, liked it, listened to it a second time, and then went back to Hamilton for another week before switching to a random one direction song I vibed with for the rest of the month.
So then March rolls around. It's the tenth. I'm bored and am no longer vibing to one direction but not feeling like Hamilton, and I didn't have anything else stuck in my head. Troy and Jay show up in my YT shorts and so I'm like 'why not?" and play EPIC on the busride to school.
I've now listened to it no less than 6 times. It's been 2 days.
By this point, I've obviously ought to have one of the Epic songs stuck in my head- right? More like all of them- All of the sagas have been bouncing around my brain all freaking day- I completely zoned out biology. All of them.
I'll randomly go from "six hundred men" to "full speed ahead" "558 men died under your command" "don't you call my mother a tramp" "youre the worst kind of good cuz you're not even great, a greek who reeks of false-righteousness thats what I hate" "PENELOPEEEEE" "waaaittinggg waitttinggg" "ALL I HEAR ARE SCREEAAMSSS EVERYTIME I DARE TO CLOSE MY EYES" "ruthlessness is mercy upon yourself" "Captain! Captain! *dying noises*" "Polities gear up, you and I'll go ahead" "The world will need a puppeteer no mooooreeee" "all my power, all my power, but it's been 12 long yeeearrrs" "DO WHAT IT TAKES TO SURVIVEEEE" "it's gonna be dangerous my friend youll need a mindset change for this" "cuz we've got all we could want hear all we could need here" "Hell no I could kill you where you stand im no pet im a married man" "558 men died under your command" "ATHENA! Badass in the arena best stategies we've seen" "THE INFAMOUS ODESEYOUSSS" "while i break his pride his trust his faith and his bonesss" "don't you call my mother a tramp" "RUTHLESSNESS" "captain! captain!" "BRACE FOR A STOoOOoOOOOorMMM stOOooROoooM-"
on repeat :3
which I'm fine with
but it's only discombobulated lines from random sagas, I don't think I could sing a singular song without the music because I keep randomly thinking of other lyrics.

Hi, same anon from before who sent the TikTok! I was truly kicking my feet and giggling like a lil maniac watching that Izuku edit 🤭🤭🤭
You and me are the same!! I got dragged back into my MHA hyperfixation 😭 Anyways, after seeing that catboy post of yours, I got inspired to write a bunny hybrid Izuku drabble instead, so here you go <3 I’m not sure I sent this to you already, or if I’m thinking of another person entirely but I hope you enjoy anyways??
— Roseberry anon (if it’s not already taken)
Drabble starts below vv
CW: Sub!Izuku, hybrid behavior, heat/ruts, breeding
Thinking of bunny hybrid Izuku who’s so shy around you, his new owner, for the first few days or so. Thinking about how his long ears stand on high alert, or twitch downwards when you come near him. So skittish, yet curious at the same time; his eyes never straying from your form when you walk around your apartment, in which you’ve been so kind to give him his own room, his own big, comfortable bed. And even though he’s a bit wary at first, he never fails to thank you for your kindness, his hands wringing themselves together as he endearingly thanks you for making him his favorite food, or giving him extra materials for his bedding.
And eventually, over the next couple of weeks, he warms up to you, becoming clingy, wanting to have his possessions scented by you, to be surrounded by you because you bring him comfort in every aspect of his life. He can’t help but to hop in place, a wide smile pushing dimples into his freckled cheeks as he excitedly welcomes you home. You giggle at his adorable actions, at the way his cotton ball tail is constantly twitching and wiggling. It’s this sight that causes you to reach out and touch the fluffy appendage, without much thought. And to your utmost delight, Izuku’s face goes bright red, his eyes becoming round as coins as his breath hitches cutely and his tail twitches once, twice in your hold. Testing the waters, you squeeze experimentally and Izuku lets out the most adorable whimper you’ve ever heard, one of his scarred hands shooting out to feebly grasp at your forearm. Though, it wasn’t to pull you away, but rather to encourage you, to ask for more of your delicious touch.
And after this, Izuku’s still so shy, except this time, he’s shy when asking for more of your touch, for your help during his painful ruts. Ruts that make him think only of you, your lips kissing him, and your fingers trailing down his heated body, all the way to his sensitive cock. It makes him delirious, makes him want to do anything you ask of him, if only you keep making him feel this damn good. In times like this, he doesn’t know whether he wants to breed you, or for you to breed him; his hips present themselves to you while he’s on all fours, his tail twitching sporadically and his ears flopped over to cover his burning cheeks as he pushes his ass back invitingly, mewling and crying out for you. It’s something you can never deny, something you always give in to, because how could you ever not? Especially when he looks back at you, his eyebrows tilted up in bliss, his mouth set in a cute pout as his hand reaches back towards you to once again set your fingers onto his fluffy tail, a breathy whine escaping him afterwards with tears beginning to dot along his lash line. Under your ownership, you take care of your cute bunny hybrid to the best of your abilities, and if he asks you to fuck him silly until the only thing he remembers is your name, then so be it. It’s a win-win scenario after all.
