I was a fool. An absolute bafoon. Deadpool and Wolverine 2: the musical starts with a montage of their daily life to the soundtrack of Accidentally in Love (from shrek) to WADE falling in love with Logan, not the other way around, because honestly who better than Deadpool? He can girlishly kick his feet and smile sweetly to the camera and (badly) play it off when Logan is actually looking at him. And it’s just them being domestic. Logan cooking, Wade sneaking glances throughout the day, can even have them fighting something together. And of course it ends with them platonically sharing a bed and you can see Wade wanting to reach out to Logan but he doesn’t, just goes to sleep instead.
And one way or another they’re fighting some big bad magical being, and honestly Marvel it doesn’t really matter who you pick. All they need is to be able to use magic and get pissed that 1-Wade can’t die and 2- he never shuts the HELL up. And bam, instant curse. The entire world is a musical and Deadpool has to suffer the consequences (being annoyed by the constant noise of everyone singing)
Except he LOVES it. He walks down the street and hears someone singing about cheating on their spouse, someone singing about how they miss their dog at home, and someone getting increasingly angry about traffic through the open window of their car. And the icing on the cake is that his roommate, THE Hugh Jackman is cursed too. Since y’all wanna make him be the Wolverine until he’s 90 you can at least throw him a bone and let him sing again, it’s what he was made to do. And since Ryan can’t/wont/doesn’t like to sing it gives him the opportunity not to, plus it has comedic effect if he’s bland and boring, making comments through everyone’s songs. Social commentary on people’s rhymes/pitch/beats. The potential is limitless. They should also have multiple people who are just genuinely bad singers, because that’s just how the real world works.
And by the third act Wade has had enough of the singing. “Can everyone shut the fuck up for five minutes PLEASE. Not you, Logan, you have the voice of an angel, please keep going.”
And since Disney owns them now they can have a scene of Logan singing ‘i won’t say I’m in Love’ from Hercules with Ellie, Yukio, and Blind Al as the muses because surprise surprise the main story is Wade trying to undo this Musical curse but the subplot is Wade and Logan both being in love with each other but both being too emotionally constipated and unaware to make a move on each other. And you know what, if the power of hand holding and gay love could save the day last time, maybe it can do it again this time. I’m thinking something cheesy like an off key duet between Wade and Logan that ends in a kiss, but I’ve never been great at endings so I’ll leave it up to Ryan.
And bam @vancityreynolds I’ve got the outline of your new movie right here. I’ll accept payment in the form of one meet and greet with you and Hugh where I can take a picture of you guys holding my Toddler so I can frame it, hang it on the wall, and ask her for the rest of her life how she could possibly not remember something that happened when she was under 2 years old.

anyway these are the musicals i think the kids at wagstaff would each try to convince frond to put on:
gene: okay so there are a LOT of options with gene and i think he would like the classics and the really weird ones but i’m on a urinetown kick and i think he would vibe with it. it’s got everything! romance… drama… social commentary… fourth wall breaking… gay people… pee jokes… he would hear lockstock go “wee-wee never fail” and immediately declare that this was the greatest work of musical theater created this century, and he’s insistent they all perform it
louise: evil dead the musical, sweeney todd, little shop, beetlejuice, the guy who didn’t like musicals— you got a horror musical, she’s naming it. evil dead is her top choice because of the traditional audience splatter zone, but she also thinks sweeney would be a ton of fun. she also likes suessical but doesn’t back andy and ollie up when they suggest it. would also be happy with spamalot
tina: she’s a phantom of the opera girlie, i just know it. she is also supportive of evil dead for Obvious Reasons. she’d put her vote behind anything with a heavy romance theme (or zombies) but phantom seems up her specific alley imo
jimmy junior: if it’s dance heavy, he throws it out there. newsies, footloose, billy elliot, a chorus line, cats, west side story, hairspray, anything goes— he’ll do any show with a lotta dancing, he just wants to move. he only leaves grease out because wagstaff did it several years in a row and it’s off the table. he also tells gene he will back urinetown if he’s allowed full creative control of snuff the girl
andy and ollie: as previously mentioned, their first choice is suessical. also you’re a good man, charlie brown, shrek, beauty and the beast… they have the basic “things your local middle school might actually put on” choices, but then ollie throws everyone for a loop by strongly agreeing with louise’s sweeney todd suggestion with absolutely no prompting, and andy further baffles everyone by disagreeing with his twin and backing jj’s suggestion of cats
courtney: rails hard for les mis because she’s pretty sure she was born to play éponine, actually. i also think she’d like legally blonde, but her Deep Connection With Éponine compels her to fight for les mis. she also feels very strongly that they don’t do starlight express because keeping her dad from butting in will already be hard enough, and they cannot bring roller-skates into the whole affair or it will be unbearable trying to get him to back off
tammy: wants to do heathers. is convinced she’d be cast as veronica
jocelyn: backs tammy up on heathers. knows tammy would not be cast as veronica
rudy: oliver! this one is just because it was my favorite musical when i was his age and i love rudy so dearly, but i do genuinely think it would be something he’s familiar with and would suggest. i also think he really loves putnam, and that’s a strong suggestion from his as well. he’s also happy to back up louise, andy and ollie when oliver and putnam are (sadly) met with “meh” from most of classmates
benj: everyone thinks he’s gonna vouch for avenue q because puppets but he’s insistent that most productions just rent out the avenue q puppets, and those that don’t all stick with the same basic designs for everybody. he doesn’t think he’d get a lot of creative leeway with avenue q, and instead he goes in hard for little shop. please let him design, build and operate a bunch of twoeys, it’s all he’s ever wanted
zeke: backs j-ju but also kind of wishes they were doing a play instead of a musical so he could suggest some tennessee williams

Concerning the Shrek 5 discussion, it's hilarious seeing younger generations, and even mine, become boomer-like in our attitude when our generations dissed older ones for being behind the times.
No. Every generation has a comfort era when things made sense and were objectively or perceivably good. As time passes and things become more socially and culturally unfamiliar, we regress to our comfort periods while letting a few new things leak in.
Reboots or sequels touching those periods of comfort and changing too much cause this reaction.
Tumblr media
Update because this is so funny to me... People are upset that *checks notes* Shrek makes pop-culture commentary...
Tumblr media
...
That... That was like - 50% of each movie... The pop culture references... Lmao.
I'm suspecting people are mad because it's pop culture references they don't like or know. Or they think they're "too modern", all of which prove my point.
The Shrek series skeleton is pop culture reference. The movie has Shrek's kid ( what happened to the other two ) becoming a teen so of COURSE she's going to be using the medieval magical equivalent of social media.

DQXI Characters’ Favorite Musicals
Disclaimer: I’ve seen like, half of these.
Erik
Epic the Musical ; I don’t think Erik has ever read or even knows of that much ancient classic epic poetry but Epic is an insanely well executed and accessible adaptation that I think Erik would adore. This musical brings up questions of what it means to be a hero, where loyalties lie, the question of manmade will vs. fate, and closure. He cries at like six different parts.
West Side Story ; Doesn't want to admit how much he loves the romance so he pretends to project onto Tony.
Shrek the Musical ; I refuse to elaborate.
Veronica
Heathers ; Veronica loves fun and campy, and Heathers is exactly that. Yeah, there’s a really intense plot and social commentary about teen culture, bullying, and that ideal coming of age get twisted into a nightmare, but also she loves belting that one note in Candy Store.
Legally Blonde ; Thinks it’s a cool story about an underestimated girl diving into something way over her head for maybe the wrong reasons and coming out all the more right for it.
Mean Girls ; She just thinks it’s funny! Gets so heated if someone tries to compare Heathers with Mean Girls and call them the same thing. Likes to argue with Serena about whether Heather Chandler or Regina George would win in social warfare.
Serena
Peter and the Starcatcher ; Okay so this one is a play and not a musical but i think it has the perfect balance of childlike whimsy and narrative drama that she’d love. It’s just like her favorite storybooks from childhood!
Matilda ; Absolutely adores Matilda. Sometimes she feels a little guilty for resonating with the story, because it’s not that her family wasn’t loving or unappreciative of her talents. She just really likes Matilda.
Anastasia ; Oh...her poor heart...the themes of family, memories, romance...
Sylvando
Mamma Mia! ; Is anyone surprised? No? Didn’t think so. The drama, the Mediterranean beach vibes, Meryl Streep. Has all the musical numbers memorized by heart and can play most of them on his recorder.
Kinky Boots ; Listen, Sylvando is queer and we all know this. I think seeing Kinky Boots was part of what helped him explore his own identity growing up.
Come from Away ; I think this musical means a lot to him and even moreso after he comes to join the band of merry misfits that is the DQXI party.
Jade
Dear Evan Hansen ; Gets her right in the imposter syndrome. It reminds of her of how she's always longed for meaningful connection with others, but was never really able to achieve.
Beetlejuice the Musical ; It's silly and fun! Also the dead mom subplot also does a lot.
Six ; She can get a little bit of girlboss musical. As a treat. Really though, the story of a bunch of queens being independent and learning to rise above their reputations that've been dominated and tainted by men? Come on!! So perfect for Jade.
Rab
The Sound of Music ; He’s a classics enjoyer and what musical could ever be considered more classic than this one? Beautiful soundtrack, such a bittersweet story. It captures a lot of aspects of life that he finds himself reflecting on, like finding purpose, building a life with love and music, and defending that love even in the face of darkness.
The King and I ; Another classic and, in his eyes, a super fun exploration of the whole "royal romance" tropes.
Hadestown ; This is a newer retelling of an old story, but he eats it up. The adaptation of Orpheus and Eurydice is just so unique, and the musical showmanship is something he can really appreciate
Hendrik
The type to say he loves theatre because that’s expected of someone of his status, but he falls asleep in the balcony seats every time. Jasper smacks him awake with the playbill. There’s only a few he’s actually stayed awake for—
The Lion King ; Wonderful theatrics that are so visually interesting that he stays awake past the opening number. It's the only court drama that he finds compelling. The duty and honor of it inspire him.
Waitress ; Saw it with Princess Jade when she was younger. It was just so different and exciting from the typical high society bores that he's used to seeing! And Jenna is just such a determined protagonist, he's rooting for her from the start.
Annie ; He cries.
Jasper
Phantom of the Opera ; He will fight within an inch of his life defending this musical as The Best Ever, The Musical That Defines Musical Theatre. Will absolutely sob during “All I Ask of You.” He thinks the phantom was just misunderstood.
Wicked ; Enjoys the musical entirely separately from the written work. This musical has brought Jasper to a point never experienced by anyone else in Erdrea but explicitly experienced by early 2000s fandoms. He's rotated the this musical in his head like a microwave and probably talks Hendrik's ear off about the lore, character dynamics, etc.
Cats ; Secretly his favourite musical literally ever. It's just so silly. It makes him laugh. Hendrik does not understand what he sees in this musical.

Majority are debating about Shrek 5's animation and here I am praying to the heavens that this movie's writing is just as good as the first two if not better. Three and four were eh ok so I'm worried if it's all downhill after that. I mean if the comedy and social commentary don't land then I hope there's some heart to the plot instead.
Coz like Kung Fu Panda 4 was pretty bland and rushed despite coming out after Puss In Boots: Last Wish. So I have my doubts with this new installment.

I've been revisiting youtubers recently. some I like under the cut
Folding Ideas: a marvelously well-spoken social and media critic, with commentary on symbolism in film. his breakdowns of the editing failures of films such as Suicide Squad and The Snowman are entertaining and informative, and he has mini-episodes on narrative concepts like Thermian arguments (the Watsonian of Watsonian vs. Doylist explanations) and ludonarrative dissonance. politically on top of it (mostly), extremely astute, and a pleasure to listen to. See Earthsea and Adaptation Sickness, End of Evangelion and the Audience Author Membrane, The Thermian Argument, The Art of Editing and Suicide Squad, Cinematic Trainwreck – The Snowman: A Vlog, Cooking Food On The Internet For Fun And Profit, Annihilation and Decoding Metaphor
Ariel Bissett: a delightful young Canadian book reviewer takes us on her journey of renovating her old house. mostly cosmetic changes rather than structural as she's essentially self-taught, but she's a charismatic and charming host with a unique eye for style and color. her design sense matches closely with my own (we're both Monet fans), so I find her videos very soothing and satisfying to watch. I haven't seen any of her book reviews, but she seems thoughtful and passionate. I like all her house videos, but particularly the three yearly house tours so far (intro video, one year in, two years in,), Building The Perfect Guest Room, Complete Office Renovation!, Living Room Renovation To Look Like Emma's House!, Building The Perfect Reading Nook, Transforming the Smallest Room In My House With Wallpaper, and honestly all the others. it's a real pleasure to see the changes she makes over the months. I can't wait for the kitchen redo!
Accented Cinema: probably my favorite youtuber right now. he's a Chinese Canadian filmmaker with a focus on films and film-making processes, both his own and those from China (most often) and other non-American countries (occasionally). his videos have brought me to tears more than once. honestly I love too many to list all of them so I'll just list my top favorites but I highly recommend this channel. I loved Why China Cared About Kung Fu Panda, Shadow: Adapting Chinese Art, Who Killed Captain Alex: What Makes a Movie Good?, Chinese Animation: In Search of a Style (brief shot of mdzs donghua at the very end), Why Ghibli's First 3D Looks Soulless, East vs. West: Differences in Story Philosophy, Mahjong & Crazy Rich Asians, Why Are Kung Fu Movies So Patriotic, How I Made a Fake Video Essay
Local Script Man: a professional screenwriter whose advice and commentary on creating stories is really interesting and different than what you tend to see on tumblr. he tends to be kind of harsh but not in mean-spirited way, just in a way that makes it obvious that he knows what he's talking about. I like Oops No Plot, The Key to Writing Freakishly Good Dialogue, and both parts of 5 Essential Storytelling Rules I Just Made Up (part 1, part 2)
Schaffrillas Productions: a guy breaks down and ranks various animated films, often by studio. these videos are just a lot of fun. I liked his videos on the Shrek franchise (one, two, three, four, and the musical), and Raya vs. Encanto - How One Message Failed and Another Succeeded
Super Eyepatch Wolf: this man is, as we speak, convincing me to read Berserk. he has a slow, dramatic presentation of his arguments that draw you in and a great sense of humor. All of his "Why You Should Watch" videos are interesting even if you don't have any plans to watch the show he's describing, because they give an overview of the themes and strengths without spoiling it. he also presents a wealth of information on manga/anime history, and miscellaneous commentary on other media. I liked in particular The Fall of The Simpsons: How it Happened, "Non Battle" Battle Anime, What Makes A Fight Scene Interesting?, The Impact of Dragon Ball Z: The Series that Changed Everything, Why You Should Watch Yu Yu Hakusho, What Makes A Good Character Design?,
Cinema Therapy: these two guys are charming and sometimes funny. they can get annoying and their analyses tend to be very superficial, but I really like their videos tearing into bad romantic cliches. I like 10 TROPES We Hate About Rom Coms, 7 Tips from THE ADDAMS FAMILY to Keep Your Marriage Alive, TITANIC: Love Triangles and Compatibility, Therapist Reacts to THE KISSING BOOTH (Part 1, Part 2), Relationship Therapist Ranks Christmas Romances with guest Shona Kay
Sideways: a channel about music! knowing nothing about music at all, I find these videos really interesting and accessible. see Why the Music in Cats (2019) is Worse than you Thought, Why Pipe Organs Sound Scary, Decoding the Music of The Matrix, Why Avatar has the Most Ironic Soundtrack of All Time, Why the Soundtrack to Shrek is Actually Genius, Ear Training and Sight Singing: The Superpower you get from Music School, Why "Spoken Word" Makes me Nervous
Pop Culture Detective: I like this channel for the analyses of troubling tropes in media, especially the ones on misogyny. See Marvel Defenders of The Status Quo, The Ethics of Looking And The “Harmless” Peeping Tom, Born Sexy Yesterday, The Complicity of Geek Masculinity on the Big Bang Theory, Sexual Assault of Men Played for Laughs (Part one, Part two), Stranger Things, Belligerent Romance, and the Danger of Nostalgia
favorite misc videos here

top five movies?
Thanks for the ask! I got this message right before I fell asleep last night so sorry for just now answering. In working through this list, it became pretty clear what I enjoy most about movies.
Knives Out (2019) Beautiful sets, fun script with biting social commentary, solid twisty mystery, excellent cast that's clearly having an absolute blast, and a great soundtrack? Yeah this is a winner. Really the only thing I would change is Marta's tell. I hated the vomit gag.
Pride and Prejudice (2005) Is the BBC 1995 miniseries more book accurate? Yes. But Joe Wright nails the aesthetic of the era even if he's not quite as "accurate." Gorgeous cinematography, another excellent ensemble cast, a script that distills the story to its best elements, and captivating music? You had me at hello.
The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003) I'm counting them as one and I'm referring to the extended editions. The ultimate medieval fantasy genre epic that needs no introduction. The books are great too, but idk for my enjoyment value you can't beat the movies. I really can't think of how to make them better. Yes, there's always additional lore to add and characters that get cut for time and clarity (sorry Tolkien, you know you ramble) but the choices that were made are excellent.
The Princess Bride (1987) I can't tell you how many times I watched this movie growing up because my mom loves it. This film didn't do great in theaters but exploded on VHS. I can practically quote the entire thing. Again, the snarky dialogue is 2/3 the fun. Another great cast. I love turning genre tropes on their head and having fun. More good music and a fun blend of good production choices mixed with intentionally campy elements. The comedy with a heart of gold that sneaks up on you.
Shrek 2 (2004) An oddball choice. Honestly I prefer this one to the original. Great animation for the era (honestly watch it again, it's almost 20 years old and it still looks good. RIP me noticing that it's that old), great original story, the jokes are sharp, the voice acting is fun, and every song is a banger. Seriously, the Holding Out For A Hero cover is unironically fantastic.
You come from my side blog, so you might be surprised by no Top Gun or Top Gun: Maverick. Honestly, TG:M is up there on the list and would make my top 10 because it's a fun watch. OG Top Gun is so very 80s and was my dad's favorite movie in the 90s so I saw it a lot. It gets points for soundtrack, cast, and cinematography but lacked in story and gets a heavy cringe ding imo. Honestly he might have watched Hot Shots just as much so sometimes I forget what was in TG and what was actually HS lol.

In some adaptions of Shrek, Princess Fiona is only seven when she is imprisoned in the tower. As Shrek functions in this quasi-reverent, quasi-social commentary take on fairytales, there’s some many questions I have...so Princess Fiona begins wishing that a Prince will rescue her from the imprisonment she’s banished to when she’s seven. Does that mean that same plea we hear emitting from her when she’s over thirty is still that damaged, scared seven year old inside? Parts of it echo with Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, which explain her...fragile mental state when Shrek meets her, while other parts just seem so haunted and tragic.
Imagine if a Prince did rescue her at that age, though- I wonder if Lillian and Harold would permit a marriage. Perhaps that’s another commentary on fairytales, and our past likewise- after all, Snow White was seven in her original story. It could just go to prove how frightening some of the Grimm stories are, just as some courtships in the middle ages occurred between literal children and adults. It just puts the past into a different context and explains so many generational curses and all the trauma that persist to this day.

Lemme say something real quick about this image that’s being passed around
I believe it was originally on Twitter, either posted by one of the staff, or one of the staff commented positively on it
(TinEye didn’t dig up anything, I guess because it’s so new, so I can’t be precise)
Tumblr media
In a world where you can change your body’s appearance at will, I HIGHLY doubt they would have anything resembling the relationship to gender and birth sex as modern hegemony. Much more likely they would subscribe to something more like many indigenous peoples’ malleable concept of gender identity.
(I know I’m probably once again taking a silly cartoon too seriously, but hear me out. And no I’m not counting ATLA as silly.)
Now granted, I’ve written an anthro fish character (some species can change sex) where social pressure is applied to change your sex if you don’t conform to gender roles, but see that’s an intentional commentary on relatively new modern rigid roles. In practice talking animals and fantasy creatures with their own societal history would most likely have a system entirely their own when it comes down to it.
They may have many genders, like some societies in the real world. (such as ancient Judaism, for one) They may have androgynes (called something else) that prefer no distinguishing features. (Oops hello OC idea) They may only think gender is kinda-important-but-not-really if you favor one body or the other after doing perfectly normal and frequent switching. Some people may have Seasonal Gender where they feel more comfortable in one gender during one time of year. The possibilities are endless.
Especially given completely unnecessary friction over microlabels lately, I think this is an opportune time to point this out.
Notice that this image does not specify what kind of trans person Zulius is. Is he non-binary? A demi boy? Just a guess, but it’s likely whoever made this image is assuming he’s a flat out trans man, was AFAB at some point, and expects you to take that verbal assumption at face value.
That’s usually what people mean when they say “is trans” for headcanons, but it in one fell swoop ignores the rest of the umbrella.
And yes I also know that this show relies on things such as Shrek-like humor that references modern appliances (toilets) but I think this in particular should stand out as a chance for fandom to use a setting like this to branch out, not just re-use the same old binary gender constructs and terminology (see image) they’ve been taught.
So, Zulius the Zebrataur (he’s not a zebra no more than Horse is a Centaur). Is he “trans”? Maybe. Would he use that term?
