"Does [Dick] seem pissed?"
No, Jason, he just knocked your helmet straight off your head for no reason. He likes getting pushed in front of moving trains actually. /s

being manipulative is basically a requirement for being a bat and I do love that for them. Bats that lie together fly together <3. Whole family is gaslighting gatekeeping and girlbossing

You know, I think there's something so interesting and fucked up in the way Rosenberg writes Jason's current status and relationship with the rest of the batfamily in Task Force Z. Something about the way that it's made abundantly clear that all the normal things you'd expect from a 'reconciliation,' like forgiveness and trust, are completely absent from this dynamic.
If anything it kind of just makes it seem like it's built pretty much entirely off acceptance. Not even like mutual acceptance of each other's flaws and different values, but Jason's complete acceptance of his family's values versus his family's "acceptance" of the fact that he's an unstable mess. It completely reframes Jason's rejoining of the family from something mutual to an unconditional surrender on Jason's end. Which, honestly, is always how it came off in the first place, but I didn't expect an author to actually be honest about it.

Jason in a suit on that one cover by Cullen Hamner and on that one panel he cheered to provoke Bruce lives in my mind rent free so I’m drawing him in a suit. Contrary to popular belief that he’s rebellious and everything and that he won’t wear a suit to the gala, I think he’s fine with wearing luxury stuff, cuz he takes it off as soon as he puts it on lmao (i swear idk how he managed to take off the damn suit in the middle of a damn rampage with everyone in the lounge running and shit, but tbh I could be wrong cuz I passed on the comic pretty quickly at that part lmao, but the idea that he’s ok with suits stays!)

Yay Some Jason and Barbara interactions!
Do you know if there any other comics where they interact either platonically or romantically? I’m a fan of both.
More Jason and Babs interactions for the soul!!
I don't remember them even having romantic interactions unless you count his one sided feelings on the Three Jokers comics. I'll tag it to their ship's tag, so if maybe a fan of the pairing knows something that I'm missing.
Here are my favourite platonic interactions:
Batman: gotham knights issues #43-44 (the first one takes place during Jason's robin days and the second one is about batfamily -Babs included- reacting to his death).
Task force Z issue #8 (Jason runs into various Batfamily members- Babs included- and addresses some of the issues between him and the rest of bats)
Batman:Urban Legends issue #1-6 (a Jason centric story where Babs not only provides help but also tries to remedy the relationship he has with Bruce)
Batman:Wayne Family Adventures episode 53 (a funny and fluffy situation where Babs discovers Jason's online activities)
Red Hood: Outlaws webtoon (it's established within the webtoon's canon that the two people who are always there for Jason are Babs and Dick. On episode #42, he spends time on their appartment and on the latest episode #47, he asks Babs help)
Batman Eternal issues #10-12, #15, #18-20, #24-28, #36, #41-42, #52(Bruce asks Jason look after Barbara who is trying to get her father out of jail. Jason also has feelings for Babs on this run )

canonically, how are each member of the batfam these days? I don't keep up with the comics because it's a mess and the characterization varies so much (especially Dami)
As of 8/2/2022
(spoilers ahead)
Bruce, Dick, Tim, Steph, Cass, Duke, Babs, and Selina all appeared in Batman #126, which just came out today. So far the storyline about piecing together the Penguin's lineage, including an introduction to two new members of the Cobblepot family. This specific issue did a good job of showcasing how the batfamily works together in an intense fight against Failsafe, however, the battle takes up a large chunk of the story—I give that part a 7/10 because Failsafe wasn't exactly the most compelling antagonist and the fight was a bit out of the blue. The focus also did lean more heavily on Dick than the other batkids. However, Selina's concurrent story with piecing together the Penguin's family made up for that as we uncover a new dimension to a long-time Batman villain. The expected release date for the next issue is September 6th, so hopefully they can clean it up a little then.
Jason appeared in Task Force Z #10 on July 26th. Jason and what remains of the team after the previous 9 issues are investigating Power Industries, where in a HUGE twist, they discover that Bane was Nobody the entire time (yes, the Nobody). The artwork fits the tone of the story and Jason's characterization has been pretty good, sort of on par with Urban Legends. I thought this was gonna be a filler issue so I was pleasantly surprised when they just jumped right into the main point. Also, I love seeing Jason's dynamic with Amanda Waller and other villains because it reinforces the fact that he's not 100% good or bad (as fandom likes to polarize him as)—he's versatile and can get along with people all over the moral spectrum. The projected release date for the next issue is 8/23.
Meanwhile, Damian's latest appearance was in Robin #16, which came out on July 26th, where Lord Death Man (yes, that weirdo) puts Damian's investigation into the Lazarus Island on pause. Flatline then calls Damian and Connor Hawke to Tokyo to deal with Lord Death Man, so we get a bit of international traveling bits. Mara Al Ghul and the Batman of Japan also appear in this, if you wanna count them as batfam? I like that this balances the sharper edges of Damian's personality with the classic Robin charm and I do kind of wish the series wasn't ending (alas, DC won't allow its characters to grow up). I also like that the setting of this story influences the artwork—you can see the subtle manga influences. Next issue comes out on 8/23. Overall I give this run an 8/10 because it explores a new, slightly more mature version of Damian's character, but I'm taking two points off because Lord Death Man annoys me to no end.
We see Alfred in Batman: One Dark Knight #3, which came out on 7/26. The story is a simplistic mini-run with good art as Batman nears the end of his journey to Blackgate. I like that this story takes place over a single night rather than stretched over a few days/weeks/etc. like we normally see—it's almost like Batman's typical Tuesday night. Alfred is still alive here, so it's nice to hear his sarcastic sense of humor after missing him for so long—it's sort of like seeing a family member at the airport. This comic also establishes him as DC's best trash-talker in his classic Alfred Pennyworth style. If I recall the miniseries is done, but the hardcover comes out on 9/13.
Luke Fox makes a cameo in Harley Quinn #18. Yes, that came out today too (#19 comes out on the 9th). Apparently the JLA left some old science experiments on their moon base so Luke puts together a team of former villains to... send them to the moon and clean it up (including Harley Quinn, Solomon Grundy, Bronze Tiger, and Killer Frost). I just read it and I'm too confused to actually criticize at the moment. First, I think Task Force XX is a dumb name—it sounds like an account on an adult website. Second, I think the artwork is alright in that you have all these bright, poppy designs, but the bodies and expressions feel kinda stiff and off-putting. I think it has potential to be one of the more absurd, fun, campy storylines, so I'll hold out and see where this goes.
An alternate-universe Thomas Wayne closes in on the Clockwork Killer in Flashpoint Beyond #4, which also came out today. However, Dexter Dent gets in the way with his own mission to break his mother out of Arkham. I already had skepticism about Flashpoint Beyond because I tend to be skeptical about a lot of alternate timelines and was never the biggest fan of Thomas Wayne as Batman or Martha as the Joker. I don't know if I should be happy or not that they proved me right, because this run has been moving a bit slowly—it feels like they're dragging what could be summarized in 4 sentence out to 32 pages. Overall I'd say it's a 4/10 (since the artwork isn't too shabby). Again, I'm biased because I never liked the Thomas Wayne concept in the first place so take it with a pinch of salt. Next issue also comes out 9/6.

Ok so, let's talk about how many times Jason's died.
There was that one timeline (no idea if it's still canon) where his heart stopped when he was a baby for, like, a minute before they put him in that box thing.
The OG death of course.
His soul was almost absorbed by that dude in a Deadman comic, so death after death?
if we're counting the all caste as canon that's another one, cause it seemed very between life and death to me for the whole ritual bit.
When Batman slit his throat.
Battle for the cowl on the bridge.
That one where there was like and after words issue where Jason's on a ship covered in guns and Roy shoots him out of the sky and he exploded, a thought box said something about not being able to stay dead or not being allowed to be dead.
and then task force z Lazarus resin, which I remember in one run made Tim immortal?? So, we'll see where that goes.
By my mathalations that's 8

You know, with Tim fans like you who needs haters? I mean, do you actually like the character? And don’t give me “it’s not that deep”, fans like you make it easy for his actual haters to be louder and that leads to the writers thinking it’s okay to have him get beat up in the books. Cause who actually likes him anyway? Not expecting a response, you’re probably just gonna delete this ask anyway, but this fandom is so fucked up sometimes. I miss when Tim fans actually liked him.
so I’m gonna give you benefit of the doubt on a few things here like: assuming that you haven’t read the Task Force Z issue thus don’t know that the scene I was talking about was… kinda treated as a comedic moment?
Tumblr media
(Task Force Z #8)
Like… Jason’s being quippy this whole scene even as he’s doing it, Tim’s dialogue is written non-standardly to show he’s talking funny, and then Jason just hits him again instead of responding. And the follow up later is, again, a comedic moment:
Tumblr media
(Task Force Z #8)
Laughing at these things and then sending them to my friends because I think it’s funny is uh… kinda the intent? With funny moments? Like it’s dark humor sure, but still.
Plus, this issue had Tim, Cass, and Dick all get beaten by Jason for at least a little bit during the fight- it’s Jason’s book, he’s the one who’s gonna win and do the cool stuff no matter how little sense it might make. It’s really not a Tim-specific thing in this case. Like, not everything’s about him 🤷‍♂️
And second, i’m assuming that you either don’t follow me and just saw the post I made that got reblogged, or you just have not followed me for a long time. Because otherwise you asking if I ‘actually like the character’ is just… so ridiculous to me.
Like, I feel I’ve made it abundantly clear on here exactly how much I adore Tim Drake. The amount of essay length posts i’ve written, questions about his character and history i’ve answered, spreadsheets i’ve made, art I’ve drawn, fic i’ve written, and action figures I own is a testament to that.
But that also means I like to make fun of him sometimes- and yeah that includes laughing at times of comedic violence he’s on the receiving end of because these are comic books which use violence in ways that real life doesn’t.
Anyways. I am one random person, and jokes I make genuinely do not have as big an impact on… anything as you seem to think. People are gonna hate Tim regardless of anything I say or do and like, people are allowed to do that! Especially anything on tumblr is gonna have such a negligible impact on actual comic books. Like twitter there’s maybe more of an argument to make since more creators are actually on there… but I didn’t even make that joke on twitter.
The joke about it that I made on twitter was more specific rather than general laughing at it- saying that Jason doing this was payback for Battle for the Cowl, when Tim had hit Jason with a crowbar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Task Force Z #8, Batman: Battle for the Cowl #2)
Soooo. Yeah. I know you said not to say “it’s not that deep” but I really truly disagree with ya on that, and feel it… genuinely isn’t! It isn’t. If I was only ever saying mean things about Tim while claiming to be a fan I think that’d be different, but considering that is just… super not what happens on any of my accounts, this just feels like you’re getting mad over nothing.

Case of Barbara, Jason & Bruce's Dynamic
Disclaimer: this is a long post in which I am going into a detailed analysis of interactions featured in two pieces of media (Three Jokers 1-3 and Task Force Z №8) between mentioned above characters. This take is purely my opinion and based on my personal research on topic of communication. If you want to start a discussion with me, please, be polite about it. I'm not here to pick up a fight. Any rude replies will be deleted.
Recently I’ve watched an interview from developers of Gotham Knights in which they touched upon the subject of difference in interaction between featured Bats. The focus was specifically on Barbara and Jason and it reminded me how I got this thing sitting in my drafts for months.
Enjoy!
I am writing this analysis under the impression from reading Three Jokers and one of the issues of Task Force Z that featured the interaction between Jason and Batfamily members.
I am not going to go into a detail about them all, but Jason and Barbara specifically because they are connected to a reoccurring pattern that I noticed in Three Jokers and they are, in my opinion, are the key to understanding Jason’s dynamic with his family.
To provide context, I've noticed one really alarming thing back in winter when I read Three Jokers (yes, I was a little late for the party). It was a comparison of Jason and Barbara made by Bruce that in the end opposed the two of them in a "Jason bad/Barbara good" manner.
What I mean is that Bruce, given both Jason and Barbara went through a traumatic episode because of Joker, makes an argument that Jason’s healing went wrong and that he wished that the former Robin actually would be more like Barbara, implying that her path of recovery was seen as “good”, making her stronger.
Tumblr media
While it's understandable that Bruce would wish on his child a better recovery, the wording and the way this interaction was portrayed makes it seem like Bruce actually evaluates Jason's recovery as negative and unsatisfactory while putting Barbara as an example of what he'd expected. The implication that only Barbara got stronger because she chose the path that is deemed worthy by Bruce disregards Jason’s suffering that he claims to understand in “Three Jokers №2”. It's unpleasant to see him downplay Jason's journey and compare things that should not be compared as cherry-picking at someone's experience and evaluating it as good or bad is a pretty common thing in our society still.
I would argue that it is unethical and inappropriate on Bruce's side to make such an assumption for one simple reason: we can't compare trauma and recovery of two individuals because 1) both experiences are valid and should be respected; 2) aside from Joker's involvement there is no common ground for comparison. Let’s take a closer look at both of said experiences.
Jason's trauma is not necessarily about Joker. It's more about the fact that his death meant nothing in the long run, that his mentor moved on to another child soldier and his killer continued to kill. On top of that, the world around changed without him, leaving a lost teenage boy he was out. He had not only to recover from several shocking events such as the encounter with Joker, inevitable death of his birth-mother and his own death, resurrection and Lazarus Pit effects, but also the new world around him. We should also consider the fact, that Jason's recovery went in absolutely unknown to him conditions and places, with no support from people he knew or used to rely on. While it is not the first time he had to deal with things in his life on his own, it is quite a heart-breaking event for him, considering that for some time Jason had that support, someone to rely on. The shock value is also at fault for the way he proceeds his trauma and recovers from it.
I would also like to mention that it would be wrong to blame the family for not being with Jason when he needed them, that’s just how circumstances played out. What we should talk about is the way he is treated in the family after his initial recovery and come-back, but that’s for later.
Barbara’s traumatic experience is also not tied to Joker entirely. While he was the cause for her suffering, paralyzing her and further hurting her mentally by taking pictures of her naked body, her journey strives far away from him and focuses more on the other motive - helplessness and reliance. These motives come from two points: 1) in the moment of being shot and abused by Joker, she is unable to save herself, making it look like she needed someone else to come and rescue her; and 2) the tragic event Barbara went through took away her life metaphorically as, being disabled, she wouldn’t be able to continue her path as Batgirl and live her civilian life in the same way as before. The world around her did not change, but rather the conditions she was in changed and would heavily impact her as the feeling of helplessness that she felt during the episode with Joker was now an ongoing motive in her life. She lost her mobility and had to rely on others to help her navigate in the new conditions. The entirety of Barbara’s journey is about overcoming that feeling, learning how to still be herself in a seemingly new world, adapting and growing despite everything. Traumatic as it was, it still gave her an opportunity to reborn into a leader and independent hero as Oracle and later return to the cowl on her own conditions. Three Jokers №2 briefly covers the pains and difficulties she had to endure with her physical recovery, but Barbara herself claims that the outer support from her father, her doctors, etc. helped her a lot.
Tumblr media
While still receiving support, she proved herself to be independent and capable on her own which in some way shows her partial trauma recovery, excluding the motives of helplessness and reliance. I consider her journey to be beautiful and inspiring, with all honesty, it created a whole new soft spot for Barbara in my heart on top of the one I already had.
Both of pieces about Jason's or Barbara's trauma are purely my personal take, but even if we exclude my thoughts, the factual information that is given in canon is enough to make a conclusion that those two experiences are nothing alike therefore incomparable. Before moving to the next part, I would like to mention that as much as their conditions differed, it does not mean that Barbara’s trauma is less to Jason’s or vice-versa. Both experiences should be treated as valid and equal, moreover, whatever is the outcome of recovery, it should not give the ground to evaluation and put someone on the pedestal as “an example of better/good recovery”. Not only it diminishes somebody’s struggle, it creates tension between two individuals that is not necessary, which we can see happening.
Here I would like to include Bruce into the picture. Let me explain why.
Bruce, in a way, is a root of the problem. He is at fault, but not for not being here for Jason back then, he is at fault for not trying to understand Jason and his trauma fully and further mishandling of situations that involve his son. His own system of beliefs and morals stops him. While it’s not necessary a bad thing to have different opinions, it is wrong to exclude any possibility of a healthy dialog between individuals based on those differences. We all are familiar with the way Bruce and Jason interact and it rarely ends well simply because one side wants to be heard and the other does not want to listen. It creates a clash and misunderstanding that is shown in the Three Jokers №3:
Tumblr media
This interaction fails because Bruce has a certain vision of what Jason needs while it was never communicated with Jason what he in fact needs and any attempts at that end with a fight. It also makes Barbara here (and the whole family in perspective) to take sides and go with “Bruce is trying while Jason does not give him a chance” but it’s a clear miscommunication. Jason never asked for what Bruce is trying to give him and Bruce never tried to talk it out openly, with a guarantee that nobody is going to get backlash. The dialog between them is not established and therefore leads to such instances; it opposes siblings and friends against each other furthering the consequences this ongoing miscommunication has. Jason, claiming he doesn’t need help in the next slide, is the proof that it was never discussed what and whether or not he needs anything at all.
Tumblr media
My personal take here is simple: whether or not Jason needs help, he is not going to ask it from Bruce or his family, not because of his personal qualities, but because he is tired of knocking on the closed door. His past experience of surviving alone on the streets and recovering by himself also contributes to why he replies the way he does.
Moreover, it’s not much of “Jason being stubborn about going out of his way”, it is rather “Bruce pushing his agenda onto everyone in the family and not accepting anything (and anyone with) a different take”. Even in that instance Barbara, as the one opposed to Jason since she and the path she took after her trauma are in favour of Bruce, blindly follows Bruce and allows miscommunication by taking his side without taking into consideration Jason’s perspective. It’s understandable. After all, Bruce is her hero, inspiration and mentor. Regardless of whether or not it is on purpose, he has a certain influence of everybody in the family as their father figure or, at the very least, a mentor, a beacon of hope for their city.
Still, it does not excuse the ongoing miscommunication within the family. The dialog or the lack of it is important because Task Force Z №8 shows that at least one of the parties is open to the communication.
Whether or not it was a conversation that was calculated (which I doubt) and manipulated in Jason’s favour (more likely), it still is meaningful as an example of a dialog where both people are treated as equals by the end of the interaction (which should be the case).
Tumblr media
In the frame above we can clearly see Barbara 1) pointing at the reoccurring issue (“you’re pretty hard to talk to”) and 2) establishing her independence (“I am not Bruce”) and Jason showing how the situation looks from his side and defending himself. Here we can see that Barbara is willing to talk, however, she can see that Jason becomes defensive around her (which is justified since we take into account that she clearly holds onto an existing agenda and an image it pushes on Jason). What happens after these frames is much more prominent.
Tumblr media
Barbara recognizes Jason as her friend, which he actually needs, however, quickly ruins a moment that could be heart-warming and touching because of the false assumptions that are based on the view we discussed previously. It is a condescending attitude, which Jason recognizes and is not willing to allow by putting his boundary up (“We’re done here”) and explaining to Barbara where she went wrong in the conversation. He communicates how his boundaries were overstepped (which he expects from Bruce, a father figure, not Barbara, a friend).
Via that exchange, Jason levels himself and Barbara, showing that he is an equal to her, an individual that does not live up to the image that Batfamily has of him.
What’s more important is the way Barbara reacts: she accepts her fault and apologizes, directly saying that she screwed up. It’s prominent simply because behind such a small portion of dialog we can see that she listens to what Jason has to say; she is able and is willing to form her own opinion on him, step aside from the image she based her opinion of previously. It straightens the idea that, at least in the moment, Barbara and Jason are equal to each other, not one of them being worse than other, as Bruce put it. It’s also an example of a mature reaction to a mistake made in communication process.
I would also like to mention that it happens without Bruce being in the picture, unlike the interaction in Three Jokers, which certainly is helpful because it does not set Jason off immediately and allows the room for Barbara to be open-minded in the moment.
Taking into consideration that it is a Jason-centred media, we can state that he clearly is inclined towards being open and listened to and entertains the idea of establishing a connection with Batfamily members. Why do we see such difference when it comes to Bruce, then? To answer that question, we need to return to Three Jokers:
Tumblr media
Shout out to all my fellow Jason stans who just got an ick from a reoccurring “You don’t understand… You never have”(Three Jokers, frame from above)/”You don’t understand… I don’t think you’ve ever understood” (animated Under the Red Hood). It is an ongoing pattern of behaviour when it comes to Bruce and Jason that came into place from the very first post-resurrection Jason’s appearance. To my mind, it is what stops the problem between the two from resolving: from the very beginning of Jason’s path as an antihero, we can see Bruce pushing the image he developed because of the difference in the views they both have (which also would not have been the case if the difference was communicated properly and both parties would come to a mutual understanding of their valid points).
I also find it important to mention that Three Jokers is more of a Bruce-centred piece of media, this is why we see the pattern showing and Barbara taking his side throughout the entirety of three issues. Same with Task Force Z – Jason-centred piece of media in which we can see how Barbara is less influenced by her views (partially or majorly passed onto her by Bruce) and more open-minded towards acceptance and allowance that Jason seeks in the family. With other Batfamily members it is the same thing.
That clash in communication is a rupture on the whole family now and it will continue to resurface until the moment Jason and Bruce (emphasis on Bruce since he is a parental figure and the main influence on everyone in the family) resolve the conflict between themselves and establish a healthy dialog. We will only see any growth and change in the family dynamic if authors decide to give up on this ongoing since 2005 family drama.
I would also argue that the choice of character in Task Force Z is not a coincidence for one reason: Barbara is not Bruce’s child in any matter, she has her own father she loves dearly and she also has a role outside of the family as the Oracle and as the Bird of Prey. She is much more independent and self-sufficient which allows her to be more flexible and inclined towards seeing the other perspective that Jason has. As much as nor she agrees neither condones Jason’s actions, his motives and his take on the situation that also affects their friendship are valuable to her which makes a room for some sort of understanding from her side.
This is why, in hindsight, the interaction between Jason and Barbara in TFZ #8 is so important, especially put next to the interaction they both had with Bruce in Three Jokers. It provides readers, who follow appearances of these particular characters, with an idea of establishing boundaries and inappropriateness of mentioned comparison/attitude to exist between two individuals with valid experiences. It was good to see Jason react accordingly to condescending attitude and Barbara accepting her mistake and apologizing for it, which could possibly give ground for allowance and acceptance of his experience on her side in the long run. It's far-fetched, but it's what we are supposed to have, not a harmful comparison that opposes things that should not be opposed at all.
Considering all of above, I wanted to say that it’s harmful to see such behaviour presented as a norm; it only straightens the idea that we should evaluate each other experience with trauma recovery. The only person who can speak on such subject is the person in recovery or, at last, a professional who helps said person through their recovery, not somebody outside of the experience who can enforce the idea of good and bad according to their own or societal standards.
It's natural to have different individual experiences even if some parts of traumas coincide or even if individuals have a shared traumatic experience. Under no circumstances should we put it into good/bad evaluation perspective.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk, I'll be taking my leave now.
Add.note: foreseeing the “it’s not that deep” comments I digress and leave body language portion out of this piece of text I wrote because, as much as we all would want a deeper meaning to be in comics, it’s still an art piece that might not have any consideration behind it. Don’t come after me, I stand behind what I said.

The landslide recall of three left-wing San Francisco school board members last week has media outlets across the country wondering about the wider political implications and how powerful a voting bloc angry parents could be in November.
Progressives Alison Collins, Gabriella Lopez and Faauuga Moliga lost their seats, with more than 70% of votes in favor of removing them last week. Mayor London Breed, D., who supported the recall, is now tasked with replacing them, and the debate now rages over whether their firings were about prolonged school closings, failed "woke" efforts to rename schools named after figures like presidents on Mount Rushmore, close ties to unpopular teachers unions, banning merit-based admissions at a high-performing high school or their general ability to do their jobs.
Parents Defending Education president and founder Nicole Neily said the results were well-earned, adding they "fiddled while Rome burned" and noting Lopez and Collins have cast blame on "White supremacists" and "billionaires" for their ouster.
"Voters in San Francisco turned out en masse to throw out a set of school board members who were more interested in imposing their will on others than on listening - and if other elected officials around the country prove to be similarly tone-deaf, then I have no doubt voters will take that into account," she told Fox News Digital.
NEWSWEEK, LA TIMES ISSUE ‘WARNING’ AND ‘WAKE UP’ CALLS FOR DEMOCRATS AFTER SAN FRANCISCO VOTE
The resounding success of the recall has gotten national attention. Attempts to rename schools after figures like Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., drew derision, and the board also took heat from the city's Asian American community for removing score-based admittance at prestigious Lowell High School in exchange for a lottery system in order to address "pervasive systemic racism." Collins, one of the recalled board members, previously accused Asian Americans of engaging in "White supremacist thinking" with their desire to "get ahead" and referred to them with the "house n----r" racial slur.
But perhaps the most salient issue was San Francisco's lengthy school closings and what was considered a lackadaisical effort to get students back in the classroom. The recall effort began more than a year ago while public schools remained closed even as San Francisco's private schools figured out how to reopen safely, and as city officials deemed it was safe for all kids to return to in-person classes.
"What happened Tuesday was more a foreshock, a warning — as if Democrats needed any more of those — that November’s midterm elections could be very bad indeed, as parents unsettled by two years of pandemic-related upheaval vent their frustrations at the polls," Mark Z. Barabak wrote in the Los Angeles Times.
Noting this was hardly in a red area of the country – San Francisco went for President Biden by more than 70 points in 2020 – he wrote, "the results are noteworthy precisely" because of their location.
"Parents of all political stripes have emerged as one of the most potent forces in campaigns and elections today, and woe to anyone seen as standing in the way of their kids’ education," he wrote.
SAN FRANCISCO SCHOOL BOARD RECALL SHOULD LEAVE CONSERVATIVES OPTIMISTIC IN THE EDUCATION FIGHT
"In San Francisco, the latest battle among Democrats over how far left the party should move came to a resounding conclusion as voters this week fired three school board members who veered too close to the edge even in a city that is a bastion of liberal activism," the Washington Post summarized.
Former New York City Mayor and Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg warned, "Coming from America’s most liberal city, those results should translate into a 7 to 8 on the Richter scale, because the three main factors that drove the recall are not unique to the Bay Area."
Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan tied the successful recall to Republican Glenn Youngkin's November win in the Virginia gubernatorial race, which centered on educational issues. Youngkin narrowly won in a state where Biden defeated Donald Trump by 10 points in 2020.
"[It] marks a continuation of the parents’ rebellion that surfaced in November in Virginia’s upset gubernatorial election," she wrote. "It is in the way of things that Democratic leaders in Congress won’t feel they have an excuse to crack down hard on the progressive wing of their party until the entire party loses big in the 2022 elections. But Democratic voters on the ground aren’t waiting for permission. They are taking a stick to wokeness whether the party’s leaders do or not."
"Notoriously liberal San Francisco voters have discovered that even they have limits when it comes to progressivism gone wild … This is hardly the first time progressives have failed to keep pace with the national mood. They mistook widespread public outrage over police killings of unarmed Black people as a mandate to defund and dismantle local police forces," the St. Louis Post-Dispatch editorial board wrote.
On the other hand, the San Francisco Chronicle editorial board rejected the notion that the recall was "a broader referendum on progressive politics or mask mandates or the ills of a hyper abundance of wokeness," saying the vote was about "basic competence." Autumn Looijen, co-founder of the Recall SF School Board campaign, also said Saturday on CNN's "Smerconish" that the vote was about "incompetence."
SAN FRANCISCO ORGANIZERS CELEBRATE RECALL OF WOKE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS: ‘MESSAGE IS LOUD AND CLEAR’
Left-wing CNN analyst John Avlon, in a "Reality Check" segment on CNN's struggling morning program "New Day," framed it as a victory of sorts for liberalism because it showed a progressive bastion like San Francisco didn't live down to "right-wing stereotypes."
"There is such a thing as too extreme, and that's good news, because our Democratic cities don't actually live up to the caricatures created by conservatives," he said on CNN, before outlining the fixation on "symbolic social justice issues" that got the board members booted.
San Francisco-based writer Gary Kamiya said in The Atlantic that the truth lay more toward the middle, but "closer to the conservative view."
"At a minimum, the recall demonstrates that 'woke' racial politics have their limits, even in one of the wokest cities in the country," he wrote.
SAN FRANCISCO HALTS SCHOOL-RENAMING PLAN AFTER BACKLASH, ADMITS ‘MISTAKES’
The city's teachers union, closely politically aligned with the left-wing school board, took what Kamiya called a "maximalist shutdown line that enraged many parents."
"It’s hard to escape the conclusion that a lot of San Franciscans have climbed off the woke bandwagon—or were never wholeheartedly on it. Again, voters’ evident rejection of the board’s incessant braying about racism, White privilege, and the rest is inextricably entangled with their anger over the fact that schools remained closed for so long. But school closures nationwide are associated with Democrats, so that’s hardly cause for progressive relief," he wrote.
A California-based political consultant who works on education issues told Fox News Digital that the marriage between "woke" and more moderate Democrats was looking less stable by the day with these ominous election results.
"Mainstream Democrats have been trying to handle the progressive insurgency by bringing radicals inside the tent and pretending they have something helpful to offer," he said. "But election results in Virginia and now San Francisco are showing what a bad idea this is. When even San Francisco liberals have had enough wokeism, you know there's trouble in paradise. [Democrats] will either figure out a way to get their woke problem under control, or voters will do it for them. I would bet on the latter."
