DC gave us both an all Batfam webtoon and an Outlaws webtoon so the next logical step is a Dead Robins Club webtoon.Reblog to bully them into giving it to us

We all agree that Knuckles is black coded. We all see it, we are all aware of this fact, it's something that a big part of the community agrees on and cares about, because, you know, representation's important and all that. However, even if I completely agree with this statement, I feel like a lot of people are ignoring another important fact about this character.
I feel like a lot of the times, when this topic about Knuckles comes up, people either ignore or flat out just forget the fact that Knuckles and his culture take a lot of inspiration from Mesoamerican cultures, specifically from Central and South América.
It's not much in his appearence, but mostly in his background as a character. We all know Knuckles comes from the Echidna Tribe, and Echidna culture takes a lot from latinamerican culture.
For starters, this is the Echidna Tribe in different Sonic media.
Tumblr media
And these are Azteca and Maya representations.
Tumblr media
You see the resemblance, right? And it's not just a coincidence. The developers of Sonic Adventure visited Central and South América during the development of the game to study the culture and create the Echidna Tribe!
Second point, this is Tikal.
Tumblr media
And this is also Tikal, in Guatemala.
Tumblr media
They literally named her after a Maya temple!
The same case here. This is Pachacamac.
Tumblr media
And this is also Pachacamac, a peruvian sanctuary.
Tumblr media
Another echidna named after a latinamerican temple.
Third point, this is Mystic Ruins, from Sonic Adventure.
Tumblr media
And these are Aztec and Mayan temples.
Tumblr media
Fourth, just this:
Tumblr media
So yeah. I absolutely agree that more people should be made aware of the fact that Knuckles' black coded, but I wish more people were also aware of the importance that Mesoamerican cultures have on not only Knuckles but also his background and the environment he comes from. Being latinamerican myself, it really bums me out to see my culture and others' being erased and mocked (because you have no idea how many racist fanart I found of both Knuckles and Tikal when searching for the photos I used above).
That's all I have to say, I'm probably just rambling, but I really wish this came up more in conversation, because it's important to me and I believe it also is for other latinamerican people, and I really would love to see this part of such a popular character being recognized more often.

I'm gonna be honest. I forget canon kon is white now because I only consume fanon content most of the time so I'm like. yeah this is kon! and then I see a comic screenshot and get whiplash cuz my brain thinks ur version is correct
before i actually read the comics literally every kon i saw was poc so my mind was just like oh okay this is definitely gonna affect my brain perception of this character 🙏
headcanoning is a very interesting concept because it can add a layer or recontextualize canon but you also have to keep in mind that canon will contradict your hcs sometimes because it doesnt have the things that make things like a sexuality or ethnicity unique, if that makes sense (well duh, it was written by primarily cishet white men who are writing from a specific lens). for example, the smallville setting is very white in my opinion and if canon kon actually wasnt white then the story might have had a new layer of storytelling to explore. but his feeling of intense out-of-placeness and the struggle with identity is something that is very relatable to me so oops if i let a lil projection slip out you know? and the fact the superfam are immigrants and kon’s journey with proving he’s worthy of being a kryptonian and worthy of being a super? it’s just sooo relatable. i definitely tend to attach myself to these type of stories. if you were to ask me to write an official dc comic of him id comply with his real canon but there’d definitely be subtext id sprinkle in for people like me to relate to if ur looking for it🤷🏻‍♀️
however it’s also good to actually read stories that were built with these lenses and intentions rather than just hcs because those stories will take that potential where it needs to go.
sorry that was very rambly 💀

Hello I come here today because I really want you to hear me out on my top tier headcannon which is… Filipino! Matt, I just mainly think it’d be neat. Also bc that’d mean his Ancestor’s were colonized by the Spanish, half of my ancestors were colonized by the Spanish and he’d be just like me fr.
hey anon you're a fucking genius. I honestly well and truly believe that characters can only gain more depth from being race-changed. Filipino works explicitly really well because it addresses the weird orientalism that comes with all the hand plot lines. Like the hand is Japanese but the lore makes it so that it is spread across most of Asia. Honestly, there's no fixing the orientalism in comics without scraping it all. But like making Elektra south Asia in the show was an inspired choice like it turns the hand from "scary Asian mysticism coming to corrupt our western ways" to "an evil force that is first and foremost hurting the people closest to it." But also, the Philippines is a deeply catholic nation but that catholicism is a product of colonialism which only adds to the angst around Matt's religion. It's a thing that connects him to his family, his culture, and his community, but it is also a moral code that he obsessive abides by and something about doesn't click, something about it creates a devil within him. And also Matt started out as Irish Catholic because in the 1960s there still was hostility towards that group in America, it makes sense to update his nationality to reflect that aspect of his character.

I got a point you can’t just take away rep bc you feel like it with your hcs. You literally have other characters to claim as other races bc their skin tones don’t matter (Bloom, Stella,Tecna) but sure take away Musa and Flora as if their skin and race isn’t important to their character just say your racist and accept that because you can have ANYONE ELSE. How about you go fuck yourself!! Y’all love making anything about yourselves. You aren’t the only other race in the world besides white people. 💀
It’s also extremely weird that you keep tryna do these one liners that’s like “brown people exist” or “you aren’t the only race in the world besides white people” when I already spoke on that in the reply which makes me think you saw the hcs and rushed to respond without comprehending anything I said which, whatever, but back to the first point; I think you see diversity and representation as purely skin deep and it’s lowk kinda weird. Someone being black and Latina, makes them black and Latina. The blackness doesn’t take away that they’re Latina. If you think it does it’s because you value pale skin and idk man that’s kinda weird it honestly tracks that you’d be too pussy to admit it with ur chest.
#this lowk reminds me of ppl saying it would be fine for miles to have a blk live action actor#who wasnt Puerto Rican#as if it’d be difficult to find a darkskinned puertorriqueño#or even ppl saying miles got a different curl pattern to reflect his Latino heritage 💀💀💀💀#as if afrolatinos can’t have 4C#come off anon and we can talk if u want my DMS are open#or come off anon and send an ask#honestly I just wanna know if you’re white tryna have this convo with me#It’s giving cracker#and i rlly wanna know if u extend the same energy towards artists who whitewash characters which is an actual recognized racist tactic#like Id bet money you don’t but I still wanna know#OHHH#i also think it’s interesting that you didn’t react the same way to Aisha being blasian that you did to Musa#like i already had the hc but I included it just bc I knew you wouldn’t#Bc it’s literally just anti blackness#but anyways#i also think it’s so interesting that when it came to yt characters u said their skin doesn’t matter#but When u came to musa and Flora you said skin AND race. as if they’re the same.#and Im like 10000% sure you think race is skin deep but it’s not I promise#like the Convo on race is extremely complicated and convulted atm but I promise you we all at least know race isn’t just skintone#which is like. the basis of ur entire issue.#read a book ma#also#‘y’all make everything about yourselves’#sends an anon ask bc of smth u presumably saw in a tag or 9 note post#aint no way

Hey! After you watch Spider-Verse remember to think critically about how you treat Miguel O’Hara!!! He’s a brown character and the way I’ve seen people treat him has been so uncomfortable as someone who is also latino. People either make him into a feral beast (which can add to the dehumanization of POC) or they fetishize him (which acts to see POC as only an exotic object for an audience’s attraction and nothing else). He is a person with his own motivations and flaws, and I’m begging for this website to actually think critically about a movie that is a coming of age story for an afrolatino character.

the spiderverse movies, especially across the spiderverse, are perfect stories to analyze through a metafictional lens (for context: metafiction is when a story deliberately draws the audience's attention to its status as a story)
it's almost inevitable for a spider-man story set in a multiverse to build commentary on what it means to be a spider-man story. itsv certainly does it, but atsv doubles down on it tenfold.
throughout all of the film we see characters imposing a narrative on miles, telling him not only what to do but also how to present and even think about himself and his place in the world. they want him to distort his story, make it palatable, to conform to the beats and tropes everyone expects from him both as miles morales and as spider-man.
his guidance counselor wants him to be poster boy for the stereotypical american dream "poor child of immigrants pulls himself up by his bootstraps to become a great scientist" narrative
Tumblr media Tumblr media
miguel insists on subjecting every single spider-person to the same traumatic tropes— sorry, "canon events" that (according to his algorithm) define the very nature of a spider-man story. he's like the comics authority of this spider-verse. any divergence miles attempts from the standardized narratives that are thrust upon him is heavily policed and disciplined
both the counselor and miguel are essentially saying the same thing: being who miles is is about sacrifice, and it's about suffering. to prevent that suffering or to acknowledge its absence means erasing his identity respectively as an afrolatino young man and as a superhero
Tumblr media
and he is having none of it. this is not a spider-man narrative, this is his spider-man narrative. he's not going to reduce himself to fit into a nice cookie cutter generic marketable version of his own life
Tumblr media
and in his literal main character moment he graduates from guy who is doomed by the narrative to Guy Who Dooms The Narrative. he's taken control of his own story. bet in the next movie he's gonna make the whole canon theory unravel. bet he's gonna break canon so hard it explodes.

So basically, here's why Miles and Peter B worked and Spiderson and Irondad and all those 'Batman adopts [crossover kid]' stories don't:
Peter B didn't overshadow Miles-Yes,he's a vital part of his character and had a lot of screentime too but Spiderverse is always MILES' MOVIES.Peter B was not his co-star but his mentor so they didn't share the spotlight and this was a wise choice on the writers part because it would be very unfair on black superhero fans to claim it as Miles' debut only for it to be another Peter Parker movie(Wayne Family Adventures:Take notes)
While yes,Peter B was lowkey an asshole in the beginning,he was never outright cruel. He was literally just snarky and bitter and Miles snarked back at him so they were equals instead of a grown ass man picking on a lil boy and being rewarded for it
Jefferson and Rio weren't demonized or downplayed to prop Peter B up-They got plenty of time with Miles too and it's very clear that while Peter B acts like a parental figure to Miles,Miles views Jeffrio as his only parents while Peter B is more like his way older brother that defaults to acting like a dad due to their age difference(Speaking from the experience of an adult with only kid siblings and a good amount of teen friends that i've gotten close enough to consider we consider eachother siblings too, this is 100000% accurate to how it works)
Peter B dosen't baby Miles-He just teaches him the best he can but believes in him enough to try things out for himself and do his own thing so he's a genuinely good teacher for him in addition to a positive adult figure like his parents and Uncle Aaron but again, they're not blood related and they both act that way and that is appropriate due to the differences in their heritage(Peter B a white jewish person/Miles an afrolatino person.Again, realistic rep and i'm Miles this time)
Peter B also genuinely cares about Miles feelings and thinks extremely positively of him as a person instead of just another crime fighter and provides him comfort and safety instead of traumadumping all over to him and placing the responsibility of caretaker on him like a discord mod LMFAO

Seeing some pretty gross posts about Miguel, and... It's actually pretty important that Miles, an Afrolatino character, is both making friends with the younger generation of POC and in direct conflict with the older generation of POC. Like yeah Gwen and Peter B. are still important figures in his life for good and now also bad reasons, but it is Miguel and Jessica who he has an ideological conflict with. It is Hobie who in some ways takes over as a mentor and guide. Margo helps him escape. Pavitr is someone Miles himself helps and gives advice to. The antagonist is not Latino because they wanted to use stereotype shorthand to make everyone understand how dangerous he is, he is Latino because Miles is Latino. And surprise surprise this movie has a lot to say about-- not generational trauma per say, but community trauma. About what happens when shared trauma starts to define the boundaries of who is and who isn't a member of your community, rather than shared passions and shared dreams and shared missions.
