being in aroace education mode has me all fired up...... one thing i talk about a lot when given the opportunity is Deconstructing How We Think About Relationships - in short, if we put all of our relationships with other people into a pie chart the 'romantic partner' slice is likely to be a very small slice but gets a disproportionate amount of Relationship Infrastructure compared to other categories, such as vocabulary, rituals, attention and narrative scaffolding - entire systems such as dating / finding "the one" / break-ups / the relationship escalator, etc. on the flipside, 'friend' is such a vast category consisting of a plethora of different relationship, all ranging from Friendly Acquantaince to Extremely Close Childhood Friend You Share Everything With, but we have a lot less language and structure for how we think about these relationships even though many of them can be deeply important and intense to us.

the line between romance and friendship is really blurry, maybe even non-existent, but it feels like the way we think about these categories is that Romantic Partner is this one very specific, formalised box of a category, while Friend is a vast and vague landscape where anything can happen - and it's on this free real estate we have built structures like Queerplatonic Partner. the concept has probably existed since forever, along with many other different types of relationships throughout time and cultures, but it's our current attempt at having a Word for it.

are you with me so far? i want to write a blog post about Deconstructing Intimacy.

just putting a CW here that i'm going to say the word sex a lot and touch on the topic of sexual trauma.

one of the very thorny things about This Whole Topic is that sex and sexuality is extremely political. we just do not live in a world where there's any neutral ground to stand on regarding sex. every demographic comes with a lot of assumptions and expectations and moral judgement tied to sexuality. some demographics are desexualised, some are hypersexualised, some are Both At Once, and in addition to that there's lots of stigma, moralizing, pathologizing, and lawmaking. just a whole mess.

so all of That makes it kind of impossible to fully Dethrone Sex. and by dethroning sex i mean stripping it of the baggage it's accumulated in our cultures. Sex Is A Thing You Can Do With Your Body (And Your Mind?). this does not have to make it any less or more meaningful to you than what it already is. what each person considers intimate is very individual. many people find hugging completely inconsequential and will hug anyone at any time, and for some people a hug is A Lot. For some people, sex is a very fun and casual activity, and for others it's Sacred and carries a lot of meaning and a very close bond. sex is intimate - it requires trust and vulnerability.

it is not the only way to achieve trust and closeness, nor the only thing that requires it.

whenever i take the bus somewhere, i trust the bus driver to take me there safely. i put my literal life in a stranger's hands, but it's a very casual affair i don't think about too much. it's not an act of intimacy, just someone doing their job.

i think the way we talk about sexual assault as the evillest most horribly irredeemably worse-than-death thing, and sexual trauma as a unique kind of trauma amongst traumas, is... indicative. and please do not get me wrong, SA is a horrible thing in every way. it's a violation of trust, vulnerability and personal space. it's an abuse of power. those are the things that make it so horrific - but it's not unique.

an abuse of power, a violation of trust and vulnerability, can happen in so many different forms. emotional abuse, non-sexual violence, medical abuse, et cetera - i don't think it's possible to place trauma into a hierarchy from least to most bad. trauma can be incredibly complex and it's different for everyone. if one day the bus driver on a whim decided to drive off a cliff, i think that would severely fuck up my ability to trust other people to drive me around. if i trusted someone with my innermost thoughts that i have never shared with anyone else, and they used them to be cruel to me, that would severely impede my ability to connect with others.

i just... don't think it does anyone any favours to separate sexual trauma from all other trauma - making it seem like sexual trauma is The Worst Trauma Possible You Can Never Heal From, and on the flipside, make it seem like Well Your Non-Sexual Trauma Cannot Possibly Be That Bad.

TRAUMA TOPIC ASIDE, i think the concept of intimacy has a tendency to get flattened into just the one kind. there are many, Many ways for people to be intimate, many activities that require some form of mutual vulnerability or physical contact, but it seems like we're just very used to placing Acts of Intimacy into the Sexual category. kind of like a venn diagram where the two circles are Sexual Intimacy and Non-sexual Intimacy that are largely overlapping. but what if, instead, it's more that Intimacy is a really big circle, and sex is just one of the circles within it?

the way i think this slots into the whole Relationship Infrastructure thing is that We Like To Categorize Things. if we see two people being very intimate in a way that's not explicitly sexual, it's tempting to think ah yes they are in love AND they're having sex, OBVIOUSLY, because they are clearly capable of having that level of trust and vulnerability together. but what if they're not? does that devalue their relationship? does it make them any less close? these are very chewy questions to ask even without bringing shipping discourse into it, and i would prefer Not To because sexuality is political and there is no right answer.

another way this flattening can be frustrating is all the times non-sexual intimacy is treated as Sexual By Proxy. let's say, for example, you're telling a story, and all forms of intimacy within that story get read as metaphors for sex, despite your actual intentions. there's nothing wrong with using metaphors for sex, especially since Sex Is Political and sometimes we gotta be clever about the storytelling - but it can get very messy if people read sexuality between characters who don't have that, especially characters between which it would be very problematic to portray that. we gotta be able to tell stories about all kinds of close relationships, and surely it should be possible without bringing freud into it at every turn.

intimacy is context-dependent, i would say. a moment of vulnerability can be platonic or romantic or sexual or maybe something else depending on a situation and all the factors involved. human connection is an boundless spectrum, not just a couple boxes.

I love shipping. I love fandom. You are all so creative and so positive and endearing in a lot of ways, and I try to encourage fanfiction and artwork and blogs when I can. But we need to talk. Specifically we need to talk about characters who are asexual and/or aromantic, and shipping them. You do not need to stop! It is fine! But you need to stop erasing their asexuality when/if they have sex and you need to stop erasing their aromanticism when/if they start being in a relationship. When you write a fic where an asexual character is having sex, and you decide they are doing that because of overwhelming attraction to whichever character you are pairing them with, you are being aphobic. You are erasing a core part of the character because it's easier for you to do that than come up with REAL reasons an asexual person might have sex. I am going to use Hazbin Hotel as an example, please don't feel singled out if this ship is one of your faves. Again, the ship itself isn't the problem. One of the common fandom pairings is Alastor, an Aroace, with Lucifer. I have seen so many fics of this where Alastor 'falls in love' with Lucifer. But that's not a thing for that character. What is ABSOLUTELY a thing is that Alastor is scheming, clever, and willing to manipulate people for his own ends. Alastor would start dating the most powerful being in Hell *for a reason* and you, as a writer, figuring out what that reason is, will make your fic more interesting AND more accurate to the character and the canon lore. And you won't be actively erasing asexuality/aromanticism from one of the few characters in all of television history who are canonically aroace.

I just got a comment saying I should have tagged for dom/sub undertones and I'm a little confused. In canon, this guy always bosses his wife around re: doing shit that's healthy for her - napping, drinking water, remembering to eat more than once a day, getting more than 3 hours of sleep - and she lovingly calls him "Boss Man" as a nickname because of it. On some occasions where she's gone more than a day without eating he'll swipe her phone and order her to eat before she gets it back, something she always seems to find endearing. There's a lot of 'I didn't mean to worry you', 'you're worth worrying about, now here's your favorite homemade walnut bread' stuff, all there in canon, just lifted from canon and transplanted into my fic.

Is this dom/sub stuff? I'm aroace so I've never been in a relationship, but I assumed "take care of yourself" "I will but I will call you a silly nickname over it" was regular relationship stuff. Or is it that the frequency of it makes it dom/sub stuff, and I'm just not grasping that because my neurodivergency is making me not read the social cues correctly? I was only recently diagnosed but this has been a problem for a long time, the whole line between normal and abnormal behavior, so I thought I'd ask you. You're much more well-read than I am and know a lot more about shipping dynamics and how they're tagged. I feel like you're an expert whose opinion carries a lot of conclusions-informed-by-knowledge and so your take could help me figure this out.

People who are doms or subs or write them, if you have a guide on this stuff, that'd be cool, too. I want to educate myself more so I know if I should tag something. After all, I can't get my story to people who want to read it if it doesn't show up in the tags they're searching for. Readers aren't mindreaders. It's on me to make sure they can get ahold of the things they're looking for. I just need to work around my own ADHD-addled brain to do it.

Yes, caretaking and food control of various kinds can be a part of BDSM. No, your description of canon does not make it sound like this has obvious undertones.

Readers are going to have different interpretations. It's possible that other readers would agree with this one. I have my doubts. I suspect they're projecting. But sure, maybe other people would think there was some of that vibe.

However, if you did not intend the fic to read this way, I would not add the tag. This is not what the fic is about.

As for what this kind of thing can look like when it is intended as a dom/sub activity, the movie Secretary has a bunch of examples. She calls him on the phone to tell him what her family's dinner looks like that night; he gives her instructions about which things she can eat how much of. The way she acts while making that phone call makes it clear it's an exciting game to her. Another time, he tells her she's not allowed to cut herself anymore: he will provide what she needs.

Even if the characters are being playful, just nagging someone to do basic self care doesn't really come across as this. It's more charged when it's an intentional power exchange thing.

It's more like... hmm... if you and a friend agreed to LARP as characters for a day. Even if you were acting fairly normal and doing things you'd often do anyway, there would be this added extra vibe to it that someone who knew you well could probably detect.

It's not so much about the specific behaviors: it's about the extra meaning those people ascribe to them. If it doesn't seem like the canon characters think of this caretaking any specific way and you, as the fic author, don't see it that way, then I don't think it will generally read as a dom/sub thing to most readers.

I don't much care for Hazbin Hotel, but I'll admit, I can absolutely respect the power play of putting the most blatant tumblr sexyman character imaginable in a show, and then confirming that the character is aroace. If I can give the show credit for one thing, it's Alastor. I always appreciate ace rep. Ace rep is important, regardless of how I feel about the source.

If you're in this fandom, please heed the wise words of this humble outsider - a lot of you are gonna be writing smut of this aroace character who has expressed repulsion towards sex on more than one occasion, canonically. I'd like to very timidly say that disregarding a character's asexuality because you just find it unimportant enough to disregard is kind of not cool.

I am asexual, and I can confirm that we are *starving* for rep. I'm not aromantic, but I'm very confident that they're even hungrier. A lot of people don't understand us, we're a mystery to a world that craves romance and offers tax breaks for marriage and has 90% of its pop songs be about sex, in horrifying detail.

So any time a mainstream ace character comes along, it's an absolute blessing. Acknowledgement. Because romance/intimacy is so often the "final goal" for characters in media. And hell, I love a good romance story. But aces and aros have completely different arcs to go through which are just as important and interesting and fascinating, but so often not prioritised.

So when you're engaging in The Fandom Activity and seeing people writing fanfiction of a sex repulsed character having sex, do spare a thought for us asexuals, many of whom will also be in your fandom, many of whom will see this fanfiction and think "damn, is my experience not interesting enough for you?"

Kung Lao thought he knew just about anything about Outworld courting rituals, but he was sorely mistaken. He did try his best to learn, even asking Raiden and Fujin if they had any knowledge on the topic. Raiden looked disturbed at the question and quickly excused himself (that man is a sex repulsed aroace who avoids romance like the plague), but Fujin managed to find some old tomes, which were out of date and vague.

What he saw Liu Kang go through was incredibly surface level and being on the receiving end was an entirely different experience.

It started small too with the same "expose your neck" jig. Then every time he visited his favorite Outworld cuisines would be made. How Kitana knew that his favorite food was fried vikt on a skewer made by the old Tarkatan woman in her food stand downtown, he'll never know. He asked Kang if he told her that, but Kang didn't even know that was his favorite.

Unlike Liu Kang, he didn't get a Michidou skull. He got some weird creature called a Khuonho that looked like a mix between a mountain goat and a dragon, she even saved him the hide because he mentioned at some point he needed new blankets.

Kitana has a freakishly good memory and Kung Lao is forgetful. Liu Kang has to hold himself back from laughing every time Kitana mentions something Lao said and forgot about as he acts all freaked out that she knows. "Your sister's favorite color is green, is it not?" "(⊙_⊙) ...yeah."

Lao notices right away when his clothes start to go missing, he knows it's Kitana, but he doesn't understand how as he checks his luggage several times before leaving the palace. Kitana asked Kang if he could get her some of Lao's clothes and he was more than happy to oblige, even throwing in a pair of Lao's underwear in there as a joke. Yes, they did come back smelling like Kitana.

Liu Kang actively encourages them both. Telling Kitana what Lao likes and helping Lao reciprocate the courting because he doesn't know what the hell he's doing. He gets a good laugh out of it.

so to summarize:

Some changes made to Lloyd's arc in Crystalized because it was handled very messy.

He doesn't actually believe in Harumi's innate goodness, but he is desperate to convince her to leave the Overlord's side because those two are sources of trauma that teamed up and made a nightmare combo. SO it's a better idea to have her on his side than with the Overlord

his (and the rest of the ninja's) weird pro cop vibes are going down down the drain.

one thing that i think is worth emphasizing more though is his growing anger issues (because they are noticeably there). i think after the events of crystallized he'll have more time to process all that trauma and anger. which isn't to say it won't be locked in or explosive at times

Basically the dust has settled, the major enemies are gone for now. and now the biggest threat Lloyd's gotta face now is his disasterful mental health

which has been causing him to lose control of his powers and go oni mode a lot more since unlocking it.

Meanwhile. Harumi's in jail.

But she's been becoming sicker and weaker as the days go by and eventually she gets moved to the hospital because it turns out. she's dying

turns out that now that since the Overlord is the reason she's alive, and it's gone now, Harumi can't keep staying in the earthly realm and she's starting to fade out of existence.

panicking and realizing that she hasn't really lived properly makes a bucket list of things she's always wanted to do, and then. calls the one person she wanted to make peace with the most as a spotter

Lloyd is really reluctant to meet with Harumi after everything she put him through but hearing that she doesn't have much time left he follows the part of him that really genuinely cares about her and was heartbroken over her.

So Lloyd agrees to help Harumi complete her bucket list.

Things don't go that smoothly though. Harumi is still Harumi. she will become vicious and cruel on a dime, despite trying to resolve that aspect of herself.

And Lloyd, even with as much empathy he has, doesn't alway want to play nice with the person who actively destroyed his life. So.

they're not really in a relationship, they're not dating. it's barely romantic, but there's a layer of genuine care.

also kissing. blooodyyyy kissing.

they break up in the end. and become pseudo-friends

Lloyd and Nya have been covering more hero work ever since the main4 lost their powers. Lloyd's been tackling more underground crime in New Ninjago City. something Harumi is pretty familiar with. so they play vigilante together a little bit.

In my bio, I say I'm Aego/Ficto AroAce for context (so I generally only feel attraction to fictional characters and I can enjoy it in media, though I don't like being the object of sexualization). I'm also Apothi AroAce which is just repulsed AroAce (I'm repulsed by anything sexual or romantic in real life and cannot stand the thought).

I don't speak for all AroAces but this is just my explanation.

When in fiction you're okay with romantic pick-up lines, and dirty jokes, and all this content is shown all over the media, you tend to store it in your brain. And sometimes it's like bottling up your emotions so bad, but in this case dirty jokes and such, you can just unleash a whole load of things.

If it's the right setup and the right situation with the right backup, you can make something amazing. For example, I have an enemy of mine I call M for privacy. One day in class he exclaimed, "I'M A BICYCLE!" My immediate response? "So that means you want someone to ride you?"

It was the perfect setup, and I had so many jokes in my catalog that I can't miss out on using. Imagine having so many filing cabinets full of papers, just STUFFED (not intended...) to the brim, and whenever you get the chance? You can't help but use them.

And sometimes I tell dirty jokes by accident! For example, I was talking to a friend of mine (I don't exactly remember what it was about but it went something like this), "Blah blah blah, it was hard... Like me." And it was just out of nowhere, I didn't even intend it, it's like a muscle memory almost.

Boredom? Yes. You can spice up your life by doing the most dirty jokes ever. It's fun! It almost feels like you have no repercussions for doing so. You make fun of the fact that sex, relationships, and desires like that exist, and that's part of it.

It's also can be such a power move. M once said, "YOU'RE A MEANIE!" Making a sexualized pose, "No, I'M A BADDIE~"

Being AroAce just means you don't experience attraction in any way. Some AroAces do want romantic and/or sexual relationships, some like me don't, and some like me are okay with it in fiction/media but repulsed in real life, and so many examples I can't list because there are so many ways of being AroAce. Being AroAce is just not feeling sexual and romantic attraction and nothing more.

You can have a dirty mind, but it's not directed towards anyone, and that's being a dirty-minded AroAce. You can have a pure mind and be Allo, and that's being a pure-minded Allo. Saying your attraction is just that, attraction. Lesbians can make dirty jokes with men, are they attracted to them though? No. Gay men can make dirty jokes with women, does it mean they're attracted to them? No.

AroAces can make dirty jokes with Allo people, does it mean they experience attraction? No.

This experience is all subjective though. But this is how I feel about this topic (and I tried making it as objective as possible). I don't speak for all AroAce people though.

Being my true self + Life update

I guess since this is a new page in my life I should be open about it.

This May I left a very long term relationship. It was for the better, and I was only a minor when it all began. I was stuck in a trauma bond in a relationship with a power imbalance. I have many issues out of it, actively going to therapy and psych, and dealing with what might be PTSD. But I'm finally able to explore who I am free from it and no longer scared that I'm existing wrong or with expectations I cannot fulfill. If you knew who I dated, I'd rather you not seek anyone out as I've fully cut out contact with them and want to move forward with my life. I have a lot I could say, but I am choosing to move on and focus on myself.

That being said, I'm out trying to explore more things out there, including messing with my identity, name and just be my true self. Please Call me Xei. I use he/it/xey pronouns only, I'm aroace but really like masculine people. I'm bigender and like if a bird like thing was a man.
