Review of "Tank Chair" by Manabu Yashiro

Power Fantasies come in lots of different forms. Sometimes they’re about becoming a world leader who can enact lasting change. Sometimes they’re being a big beefy hero with the ability to punch out hitler. Sometimes they’re attaching Boudica Spikes to your wheelchair and taking people out at the ankles for refusing to move out of the way. And when it comes to disabled-on-abled violence, Tank Chair provides one hell of a power fantasy! In a time where people are still claiming that wheelchairs don’t belong in fantasy, Tank Chair gives us a blood thirsty alternative where a wheelchair takes an already deadly assassin and gives them a high speed tank with extra knives. 

Written and drawn by Manabu Yashiro, the series follows two siblings– Nagi and Shizuka Taira – as they make their way through a post-apocalyptic Japan. Nagi is an assassin who, after taking a bullet to the head protecting Shizuka, became comatose and unable to move from the waist down. However, he has a unique ability where he will come back to consciousness anytime he senses a deep desire to kill him. And thus begins Shizuka’s mission to find someone with such an intense desire to murder her beloved older brother, that he comes back around permanently. 

As a mobility aid user, I was initially drawn to the series for rather obvious reasons. Cripple Punk has been around since 2014 but has rarely gotten any mainstream notice. Cripple Punk is the radical idea that disabled people are people, not just inspiration porn to get the ableds to go to the gym. No, “If Alice Tai can have her leg amputated and then win a gold medal 8 months later, what’s stopping you from doing it?” but rather “Holy FUCK how hard core is Alice Tai?! She got her leg removed and then swam 100m in 1 minute 13 seconds?!” Cripple Punk allows for disabled people to be loud, angry and visable. It allows us to misbehave and throw up the middle finger at those who try to fuck with our basic rights. It's been a long time coming that we’ve had a manga that helped embody this, and Tank Chair is off to a great start in reflecting this much needed aesthetic and attitude. 

I was a little anxious when starting the series that it would fall into dangerous “vegetable” stereotypes where Nagi’s lack of consciousness is only played as a joke about taking away his agency and personality. However I was delighted to find that Nagi is still shown to have agency and choice in his situation. He does have some issues with a few of his sister’s choices of mission, but doesn’t appear to be too bothered and it comes across more as sibling banter than anything else. In fact, one of the best parts of the series so far is the relationship between the two siblings! It’s a surprisingly realistic one, where you do feel the genuine love they have for each other – even with some of the more fucked up dynamics at play. For example, how Shizuka is able to awaken Nagi by charging at him with a dagger and genuine pure intent to stab him in the neck. But hey, it’s a nice take on the Cain Instinct by taking the term back to its abrahamic fratricidal origins, rather than the usual cop out of just having siblings thwack each other with wrapping paper tubes. 

Another concern I had was around the idea of them seeking a cure for Nagi. However the series makes it incredibly clear that the only thing the siblings are seeking is for Nagi to regain full consciousness, something definitely worth seeking! I was particularly happy to see Nagi explicitly say that he has found benefits in becoming a chair user! He sees it as a way of bettering his bond with those around him, and also who wouldn’t enjoy charging about in a personal murder tank? 

In terms of design, I’d rather the chair take more inspiration from active sport chairs. Whilst I love that his sister has designed him multiple ones for different tasks and missions, his regular chair feels a little too passive in design despite all the awesome spikes. I do give credit for Nagi’s chair resembling actual wheelchairs, but it's formed around a very basic budget model. The square design and leg clamps might give it that Diesel Punk vibe, but I think the series should continue to embrace the Cripple Punk aesthetic more. In this case therefore, I think it would have been better for it to draw inspiration from the most Cripple Punk Sport in the word: Murder Ball. Also known as Wheelchair Rugby. Chairs for Murder Ball are built more like race karts, with solid steel structures and bumpers. Wheelchair Rugby is probably the most Cripple Punk Sport out there, given that it actively challenges the weak and helpless disabled person stereotype, but is also one of the few full contact mixed gender sports! It also proves to anyone who might think that Nagi’s antics are unrealistic that no – wheelchair users are fully capable of incredible stunts and outrageous blood lust. 

I do have other concerns for the series. So far both disabled characters introduced – Nagi, and Touko Kurosaka – have been used as an instrument for murder. Even if they did choose to be Assasins, there’s still something inherently uncomfortable about how both characters are deliberately sent into action on their siblings orders. Touko in particular is a concern for me, given that she is way more presented as a tool of her brother’s than Nagi is. However, the bonus content at the end of volume one does give me a bit more hope that she will have her story expanded upon and given personality beyond “giant high school girl who can smash people with her fists”. I hope that the current toxic undertones of the Kurosakas’ relationship is just to emphasise the surprisingly loving and balanced relationship between the Taira Siblings.  

On a final note, I’d like to give a shout out to Evan Hayden’s lettering. In my opinion they did an excellent job of matching the style throughout, allowing for a proper 1:1 experience whilst still maintaining Kodansha’s style guide of subtitling rather than completely touching them up. I particularly liked how on page 59, the subtitle was drawn in a way that combined the existing smoke trail to become the “I” of “Kill”.

I’m not usually a fan of excessive violence in manga. I’m not opposed to it, it’s just not for me. I gave Chainsaw Man 3 Volumes and decided that I preferred Fujumoto’s more person-focussed manga like Look Back. Yet I think the personal wish fulfilment of Tank Chair makes it so appealing to me! Whilst I would absolutely recommend it to fans of Chainsaw Man and Dorohedoro, I believe that fans of Run On Your New Legs and Real will also enjoy this athletic narrative of platonic relationships and adapting disabled life. I very much look forward to seeing where this series goes in the future, and hope that we get more Action Packed Cripple Punk series in the future!

...Which is the understanding of Christianity that DC Comics' depiction of the afterlife is based on, to circle back around to the original post. Well, that and a very generous helping of the Divine Comedy, alongside Gnosticism and Jewish mysticism.

Christianity exists in the DC universe, but isn't really a functional religion in the way we understand it, given the supernatural cosmology of the world. It's really treated as just another subsection of the magic side of the universe.

God - the Presence - exists, but is distant and impersonal. He created the universe, but really hasn't been active in the world directly since then, and it's implied that His nature is shaped by the beliefs of His followers.

Jesus was a historical figure, but His resurrection was supposedly faked by the Order of St. Dumas. The Holy Spirit is completely MIA. The most obvious evidence of God's work on Earth is through His divine agent of vengeance, the Spectre - an angel bonded to a human host. Other angels exist, one of them even being a Justice League member, and some of them are in open rebellion against the Presence.

Perhaps the only authentic depiction in the DC universe of a Bible-believing Christian is Norman McCay in Kingdom Come. Huntress is superficially Catholic, but only so she can have Catholic guilt related to her mafia background and becoming a murderous vigilante.

The mysterious, immortal Phantom Stranger is hinted to be Judas Iscariot. Cain and Abel exist, and are immortal hosts for horror anthology comics. Gog (from Revelation) shows up and is an ancient god of the Third World that preceded New Genesis and Apokolips. The spear that pierced Jesus's side is a magic artifact that had enough power to keep the JSA out of Nazi Germany while it was in Hitler's possession. Eclipso, a fallen angel (but not a demon) caused the Great Flood.

Satan proper is missing, but several demon lords appear as stand-ins, as well as other demons in abundance. Lucifer (ostensibly Satan) abdicates Hell because he's... tired of ruling it? and hands over the keys to Dream of the Endless so he can go run a bar on Earth. Neron, Blaze, and Satanus are other Satan stand-ins - who all war amongst themselves for control of a very Dante-inspired Hell at one point. The Demons Three are staple Justice League opponents. Blue Devil is turned from a stuntman in a costume to an actual demon at one point (and oh yeah, he's Irish Catholic too - again for Catholic guilt reasons more than anything). Jason Blood is mystically bonded to a demon by Merlin of Arthuriana fame.

The afterlife is such that it seems that anyone can walk right out of it, and one's final destination isn't incumbent on their belief in Christ as Lord and Savior, but of some measure of good works.

Overall, Christianity is not a functioning belief system in the DC Universe, and is really just another mythology for the fantasy kitchen sink setting that the universe is.

(Marvel doesn't get off scot-free either - Al Ewing's depictions of The One Above All have been close to, if not actually, blasphemous, or whatever else you'd call the idea that the devil is to God as Hulk is to Bruce Banner.)

Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay is just such a deeply unserious movie. I get what they were going for but if you have the barest surface-level knowledge of theology the whole thing turns into a black comedy where you watch a bunch of idiots kill each other over a piece of cardboard.

Magnificent Scoundrels- Humans are Strange

A little bit of shenanigans, a little bit of character development, lots of interactions.  To the person who responded to my last story saying I should write what would happen if Cain met Conn, I will be doing that next, so worry not.  None of these characters belong to me except for Drake and his crew.  

In the Hangar of the Apocalypse

The stainless steel walls of the hangar reflected the clean light from the starship, bouncing it off neatly cleaned surfaces.  A shuttle and sparring mat were off in the distance contrasting with weapons racks, storing a mind-bogglingly large assortment of firearms.  However, in the center, facing towards a padded wall, was a most peculiar device.  

“So, let me get this straight.”  Quill turned to Drake.  “This is an aircraft catapult.”

“Yes,” replied Drake.

“And it’s used to launch aircraft on runways that are too short for them to pick up speed?”

“Yes.”

“And you strapped an office chair with wheels to this thing?”

“Yes.”

“And you want us to sit in the chair while you launch us?”

“Yes.”  Quill turned to the rest of the Scoundrels, who were staring at the contraption with various degrees of perplexity.  Shepard raised a hand.

“Yes?” asked Drake sweetly.

“Why?”

“Why not?”

“...okay.  Fair enough.  I’m first.”  The large, well lit hangar bay exploded with noise.  

“The hell you’re not!” replied Vir vehemently.

“I’m first!” added Quill.

“Nuh-uh.  I called it before either of you,” snapped back Shepard.

“Calm down,” interrupted Drake.  “So, who all wants to be first?”  Everyone except Cain and Solo raised their hands.  Even the Master Chief raised his hand as if he were in a primary school.  Drake didn’t dwell on the comical sight of six of the universe’s greatest heroes standing with their hands in the air as if they were children.  “Wonderful.  I’m thinking of a number between one and twenty.  You will all guess which.  The closest will go first, the second closest will go second, and so on and so forth.  Make sense?”  Everyone nodded.  “Now, guess,” ordered Drake.

“Ten.”

“Heh.  Eleven.”

“Twelve.”

“Damn you.”

“Nine.”  

“Fifteen.”

“Eight.”  Drake pursed his lips.

“Quill, you had ten?  Right on the money.  You’re first.”  Quill did a small victory dance while the others looked on enviously.  Drake stepped over the catapult mechanism.  “Okay…” he muttered.  “You sit there.”  Quill did as commanded.  “And attach the seat belt.”  He reached around and clicked the belt across his lap and shoulders.  

“Is that...is that attached with duct tape?” asked Cooper concernedly.  

“No.  The seatbelt is firmly welded to the chair.  The duct tape is just there to hold the strap at a comfortable place,” replied Drake flippantly.  Cooper raised an eyebrow at Kirk.  Cain and Solo were both settled back with ‘let’s see how this goes��� expressions on their faces.

“Is this safe?  I mean...this is an aircraft catapult, and the only thing you have is a seat belt?” said Kirk.  Drake snapped his fingers.

“Ah!  Yes.  Take these.”  He tossed a bicycle helmet and knee pads to Quill.  “There!  Perfectly safe.  Mostly.  There is padding in the landing area, as well, so you are unlikely to break anything important.  Probably.”  He frowned.  “Eh, not important.  Alright!  You stand there, you stand there.  Ready?”  Quill cracked his neck and took a few deep breaths.  Several nearby crewmen were exchanging money while another one was making motions with a pair of aircraft marshalling wands.  Cain turned to Solo.

“It appears you and I seem to be the least..impetus of the bunch,” he remarked dryly.  Solo gave a dry laugh.

“Or we are the most interested in keeping our appendages in their proper places.”

“You can say that again,” muttered Cain in response.  The two were cut from their conversation as Drake grinned and gave a wild thumbs up.

“Ready!” yelled Quill.

“And...boom!”

In the Medical Bay of the Apocalypse

Vir looked over the broken, bruised, and battered body of Quill, past the beeping medical machines and the busiling of several doctors from the various ships in the Scoundrels' fleet.  

“Was it worth it?” he asked down to the man on the bed.  Quill grinned up at him.

“So worth it.  Even with the broken nose and bruised ribs and face.”  Kril, the Omen’s overprotective insectoid doctor, frowned at the various Scoundrels clustered around the bed.  

“I specifically forbid any of you from doing that again!”

“Aw, but I wanted to try it,” muttered Shepard under his breath.

“Hey, it’s my ship, my invention, so my rules.  Go knock yourself out,” said Drake.

“That’s exactly what you’re going to do if you try it,” intoned Chakwas, the Normandy’s human doctor.

“Eh, he’ll be wearing a helmet.  What’s the worst that could happen?” asked Drake.

Forty Minutes Later

Quill looked over at the two neighboring beds, now occupied by Vir and Shepard.  He grinned.  “Was it worth it?”

“So worth it!”

Later That Night

The room was a large, classy looking lounge, opulently decked out with expensive carved wood furniture and a large, extremely well stocked bar covered with ornate and very expensive-looking crystalline glass bottles.  The lighting was dark, as benefitted such a space, and reflected off the deep mahogany wood paneling of the walls.  All of the Scoundrels themselves, and any of their crews or retinues who wished to come with them, had been invited and were currently sitting at the bar or any of the white-clothed tables nearby.  The room seemed to be divided roughly into groups: the Scoundrels themselves, their second-in-commands or aides, a group of various crewmembers and associates who sat at the bar drinking heavily, the medical professionals, a group of extremely lethal-looking individuals who seemed to be swapping war stories, and a miscellaneous group who gradually formed in the corner.  At the Scoundrels’ table, Cooper turned to Drake.

“Not that I’m complaining, but why exactly do you have a super fancy bar and lounge aboard your ship?”  Drake gave a sly smile in response. “Well, I am the highest charging mercenary in my home galaxy, so all that money has to go somewhere.  Be honest with yourself.  If you had your own spaceship, wouldn’t you do something like this?”

“Yes.  Yes, I probably would.”  The conversation started to turn.  Over at the table of individuals sharing war stories, Garrus Valkarian, the Normandy’s lethal sniper, waved his arms around for emphasis.  

“So there I was.  The only way to get to me was across a single bridge.  No way behind, no way except across pre-sighted open ground.  And what did these idiots keep doing?  Charging me.”  Scoffs were heard all around the table.  

“Typical.  Mercenaries don’t know one end of the gun from the other.  Present company excluded, of course,” said Ramirez, one of the Omen’s marines.  Major Broklaw of the Valhallan 597th shook his head.  

“Never thought I’d be sharing war stories with this particular lot,” he commented.  Garrus and several of the other aliens at the table turned towards him.

“What, with non-humans?  I’ve heard about your particular attitudes.  Rest assured, we don’t want to kill you,” he deadpanned.  

“Yes, well, you never can be too sure.”  Broklaw patted his sidearm in a not-so-subtle gesture of ‘if you try anything you’re going to get a hole through the head’.  

“Enough of that,” said Garang, one of Drake’s armsmen.  “I don’t care about aliens or not.  What I’d like to know is: what is Master Chief and how the hell do we get more of them?”  

“Super-soldier?  Not sure,” muttered someone.  

“Well, I don't know how they do it in their particular universe, but there are super-soldiers in mine,” replied Broklaw.  “Did I ever tell you of the time Commissar Cain killed a Khornite Berserker in close combat?”  

Drake swireld the liquor in his glass experimentally and looked around the table.  

“So.  Plato said that unless philosophers become kings or kings take up philosophy, there is no hope for the human race.  Therefore, question: would you rather have a philosopher king or a warrior king?”  Looks were shared across the table.  

“Warrior king,” replied Cain.

“Philosopher king,” replied Kirk.  

“Have to give it some thought,” muttered Cooper.  Kirk turned inquisitively.

“Vir?  What about you?”  

“I don’t know.  Depends on the situation, I guess,” he said.  Kirk turned his gaze towards the original questionnaire.  

“Drake?”  Drake smiled knowingly.

“You’re really going to compare Hitler with Jesus and the Buddah?” asked Kirk.

“Well, I thought you’d appreciate it, with all your “no religion” stuff.”

“That’s not how it works.  Plus, warriors focus on killing, philosophers focus on doing better for everyone.”

“Okay then.  I’ll make a bet with you.  For every great ‘philosopher king’, I bet I can name two great ‘warrior kings’.”

“Deal.  Abraham Lincoln.”

“George Washington and Dwight Eisenhower.”

“Washington was more warrior than philosopher?” asked Kirk skeptically.

“Fine.  Eisenhower and Napoleon,” replied Drake as he settled back in his chair.  

“Marcus Aurelius.”

“Julius Caesar and Constantine.”

“Pericles.”

“Debatable if he was more philosopher or warrior, but, Leonidas and William the Conqueror.”

“Solomon.”

“Nebuchadnezzar the Second and Ramses the Third, if you want to go ancient history.”

 “Uhh...Haroun al-Rashid.”

“That’s from your history!” replied Drake.  “Before the splitting of our timelines.”

“Well-”

“The Emperor of Man and Lord Solar Macharius,” butted in Cain.  Kirk looked at him with exasperation.  “What?  If you’re using your history then I can use mine.”

Over at the table of second-in-commands, Spock, long-eared Vulcan executive officer of the Enterprise, gazed over at the still bandaged and bruised forms of several of the Scoundrels.

“Are they always like this?” he asked.  Glances were thrown around the table.

“Yeah,” responded every other individual there with perfect synchronicity.  Richter, Drake’s second in command, cast a dull look around the table.  

“Drake is, in his own words, and I quote, ‘fucking nuts,’” he inputted dryly.   

“Hmph.  Shepard seems to have a tendency for collecting the strangest people in the galaxy.  He’s got a bloody menagerie of highly lethal individuals.  The more alien species, the better,” said Miranda Lawson, raven-haired executive officer of the Normandy.   

“Tell me about it,” snorted Simone, second-in-command of the Omen.  “Shepard and Vir ought to get along well.”  

“That makes three,” muttered Gamora, de-facto assistant commander of the Milano.  

“Cheers, then.  To our various commanders.  May they at some point listen to our more rational suggestions.”  This drew a laugh.

“Cheers!”

As the night wore on and drinks flowed more freely, people became more relaxed and comfortable, sitting lower in their chairs and laughing louder at worse jokes.  Some, though, became more alert and tense.  For those with more experience, it would never do to be found wanting at any time.  But at the table of the Scoundrels, it remained roughly the same.  Their members were experienced enough not to get caught intoxicated and to still remain perfectly at ease.  

“So.  We have two Johns, one Adam, one Peter, one Ciaphas, one James, one Han, one Thomas.  Interesting how that pans out,” said Drake as he finished the last of his glass.  

“What do you mean by that?” asked Shepard.  Several glances from the others seated supported this question.  

“John.  Hebrew.  ‘God is Gracious’.  Name used frequently throughout the Bible and in early Christainity.  Became synonymous with the most common name in the English language, and never really lost that identity.  However, you two are nothing like ordinary.”  He nodded at Cooper and Shepard.  “Shepard.  Leader of sheep.  Leader of the flock.  Shepard of humanity.  Leader of men.  Saviour.  Legend.  Hero.  Much better.  Much more accurate.”  He paused, took a breadth, and looked Cooper dead in the eye.

“Cooper.  Old English.  ‘Barrel Maker’.  Somewhat common name.  Can be either first or last name.  Doesn’t really connotate anything.”  Drake’s iron gaze turned to Vir.

“Adam.  Hebrew.  ‘Man’.  The first human.  The first man.  Fitting.  First human to make contact with aliens.  First human to lead the GA armada.”  He paused again and looked around the table.  “Adam.  Husband of Eve.  Father of Abel, Seth...and Cain.  Intriguing.”  Everyone looked much more uncomfortable.  Good.  “Vir.  ‘Man’.  Again.  You have a most appropriate name.  Very interesting.  Perhaps vir-y interesting, if one was inclined to make bad puns.”  A slight lessening of the tension.  More confusion.  Even better.  

“Peter.  Greek.  ‘Stone’.  The First Apostle.  Guardian of the Gates of Heaven.  He’s the reason why the name is popular.  Fitting?  Not particularly, but I suppose it remains to be seen.”  Another pause.  Another breadth.  More looks and stares.  “Quill.  Not a common name.  A quill is a hollow shaft of a feather.  Or, perhaps, a porcupine quill.  Used to write things.  Used to fly.  Used for defense.  Many different things.  Is that what you are?”  Odd.  A question, this time, instead of an answer.  The gaze moved on.

“Ciaphas.  Intriguing.  Most unusual name.  Caiaphas was a Jewsish high priest in the Bible.  He was the one who plotted to kill Jesus Christ.  He was the presider of the Jewish trial of Jesus.  He was the one who handed him over to the Roman governor.  Responsible for the death of the Son of God.  Betrayer.  Murderer.  Responsible for deicide.  Unfitting for you.  Quite the opposite, in fact.”  Drake’s glass was making circles on the table, idly sliding around as black-gloved fingers played with it.  “Cain.  Third human.  Second man.  First murderer.  Son of Adam and Eve.  Brother and killer of Able.  Again, unfitting.  Most interesting name.  Very sordid.  Two infamous murders.  Hmm.”  People were leaning closer, listening more intently now.  

“James.  English for a Latin name derived from the Hebrew Jacob.  Two Apostles were named James.  Unfitting.  You’re anti-religious.  But… English name.  Became popular in Britain due to King James.  One of the most popular names in Britain and America around the turn of the Second Century.  Kirk.  Never heard of it before.  Not going to go into details.”  Another pause.  The looks were becoming more relaxed.  Very good.  

“Han.  Most likely a derivation of Hans.  Hans.  German and Scandanavian derivation of John.  Another John.  Very interesting.  Apparently the stereotype of that name being extremely common is true.  Solo.  ‘Alone’.  By yourself.  Fitting?  Somewhat.  Hmm.”  Another hum of perplexion.  Or was it perplexion?  Perhaps something else.  

“And that leaves only two.”

“And your name?” asked Vir.

“Thomas.  ‘Twin’.  Aramaic.  People forget, but there were originally three Judas amongst the original Apostles.  Jesus renamed one ‘Thomas’ to avoid confusion.  Extremely popular name in English-speaking countries.  Drake.  Old English and Latin surname.  Means ‘snake’, ‘dragon’, or ‘monster’.”

“So, if I were to analyze your name like you did with ours, then I would say that whoever named you didn’t do a very good job.  ‘Unfitting’,” said Kirk.  Drake laughed.  A low, threatening laugh.

“Incorrect.  Thomas Drake is not my given name.  It was chosen by me for a reason.”  Any heads that were peering into drinks or staring around the room looked up sharply.

“What?”  

“You heard.”  Drake’s glass was now sliding between his left and right hand, moving across the table with a scraping noise.  “We all have our secrets.  Isn’t that right, John?” he shot at Master Chief, a small smile playing on his face.  The Chief, who throughout the night had barely moved and said even less, reacted as if he were slapped across the face.  “Yes.  I know your name.  We all have our secrets.  I know all of yours.  You don’t know mine, or each other’s.”  He leaned forward, suddenly much more serious.  “But if you want to trust each other, secrets must come out.  I won’t tell any of mine, until you give me yours of your own free will.”  The atmosphere was tense.  Hostile.  Glances were thrown across the table, looking for enemies and allies.  As it should be.  

“You don’t trust me.  Good.  Or maybe not.”  Drake picked up his glass and stood.  “Do whatever you wish, with or without my presence.  Good night.”  So saying, he left the table and walked, like a specter from the room.  

More looks were thrown around the table.  No one spoke for a long time, each lost in thought.  The silence continued for the rest of the night, each individual lost in their own dark secrets.

The situation is that the world has fallen into a pandemic of Covid-19, and my job closed down in March, leaving me with lots of time on my hands. Despite my doubts, I fell back into Supernatural, deep into it, and I am now rewatching it. I thought it would be fun to try and see how much I could remember from earlier seasons before I watch them all

Summary: Y/N Winchester is an enigma wrapped in a riddle. The half-sibling of the famed brothers and she was there through it all. Until now. After Jack’s birth she made a deal with Batman himself. His money for her expertise. She can pay for a real school and some online classes for her and Jack. All she has to do is enlighten the Team about her world. Easy peasy, right? Pairing: Supernatural x Reader x Young Justice Word Count: 1359 Warnings: None.

A/N: This is not an official pat two, I will be doing one of those at a later date. This is just a small side piece set in the same crossover as the Part 1.

"So what do we have today?"

Wally bounced into the kitchen where Y/N was midway through buttering a piece of toast. She sent him a look that might have been confusion or annoyance, maybe both. She'd been here for nearing four months now, instructing them on how to properly sift through the lore and how to accurately guess what was real. So far they'd only been on three ordinary hunts, a ghost in the north, a pair of werewolves in the harbour and a small nest of four vampires. Not that Y/N had told them how small those hunts really were.

They'd all been quite proud of themselves after they got over the fact that these were not humans they were killing. Wally had actually vomited the first time they beheaded a vampire, and Robin had followed suit when they'd dug up a grave to get rid of a ghost. Y/N hadn't played a very large part in the actual hunt, she was simply instructing them. How were they supposed to learn if she did everything for them?

So they had zero idea what a real hunter in action looked like. So it wasn't entirely Wally's fault for getting a big head. But boy was it annoying as all hell, and Y/N had actually been to hell. The team was just a bit, overconfident. They seemed to think that needing a large team to take on four vampires was normal. Y/N hadn't been able to bring herself to tell them that her and the rest of Team Free Will had taken on larger group of bigger, badder monsters, alone. In fact, some of them seemed to think she wasn't in the actual fighting part of the business.

"What do you mean?" Y/N asked the redhead, biting into the piece of toast and furrowing her eyebrows.

"Well, what are we going to hunt now?" He sat on the island in the centre of the kitchen and grinned. "Ghost? Vampire? Werewolf? Maybe you'll finally let us take on a demon?" He wriggled his eyebrows giving her a nod as if to say; Come on, what have we got?

Y/N all but choked on her food. She paused to cough for a good minute, Wally frowned clapping a hand on her back in an attempt to help. She finally heaved a breath into her lungs and gave a dry chuckle, "You want to take on a demon?"

"Well yeah, that's the plan right?" He furrowed his eyebrows. "Work our way up the big leagues?"

"No," She brushed the crumbs from her hands and began wiping down the benchtop. She glanced over her shoulder at him, "I'm here to teach you what to do if something arises, I'm not teaching you to go looking for trouble. You are not hunters."

"Not hunters?" Wally scoffed, pushing off the counter. He leant over, looking into the adjacent common room where the team lounged. "Get in here guys, come listen to this!"

They shuffled in Artemis leant against the counter, "What's going on?"

"Apparently we're not real hunters," Wally waved his hands angrily. "Little miss lore book says only real hunters get to hunt Demons."

Y/N simmered as they began yelling. Indignant shouts of; We can hunt just as well as you or we're hunters too! What did they know? These immature little superheroes, with their dumb masks and stupid alias'. They couldn't take out one nest together, no way could they take a demon or god forbid an angel. And who knows what else they'd get caught up in? They could die, or get captured by Lucifer while he's topside.

"How would you know? All you do is sit there and read your stupid lore books!" Now that was the last straw.

"Do you have a family?" She hissed at them, louder and angrier then she'd ever gotten in their presence. "Friends? Well, do you?"

They nodded carefully, confused. Some of them glanced at one another as if thinking; I guess, but what's that got to do with anything. Y/N boiled within, they knew nothing. She almost screamed and cried in frustration. This is exactly what she got for coming to help them.

"Well if you want to hunt then, no, you don't." It was a cold, restrained whisper. "Because when you hunt, when you join this lifestyle... You either die or live long enough to watch everyone get killed around you."

They fell silent, dead silent. Contemplating exactly what she meant. Connor looked over the group, Y/N knew about his situation - The Clone. She supposed family would mean these guys. For a few of them, it was each other, and if not family then close friends. Partners in crime. But Y/N was still beyond angry.

"My mother, Mary and father, John died to a demon. My father figure, Bobby was killed by something called a Leviathan. My mother figure, Ellen and her daughter, Joe, killed by hellhounds." She heaved a shuddering breath and continued, "My boyfriend, Kevin was killed by an angel possessing my brother. My best friend Charlie, some psycho Frankensteins. My half brother, Adam to the archangel Michael. My brotherly figure, Castiel, six times over. My older brother, Sam, eight times. I don't even know how much, my eldest brother Dean, has died!"

"Turns out I have a knack for dying too!" She spread her arms to the roof and gave a dry laugh. "I sold my soul to bring my brothers back to life when I was 5, hellhounds collected on that a year later. Spent forty years being tortured in hell with Dean. Released Lucifer at age 8, got dragged into his magical cage when we shoved him back in. Sam and I spent a hundred and twenty years in there being tortured by the Devil. Demon dragged my brother and I out only to forget our souls - was soulless for a year. Our angel friend Castiel decided he wanted to be god so he ripped open the monster afterworld and set free the Leviathans. They killed him but don't worry he came back, we threw the monsters back into purgatory but whoops got trapped there for a year. Broke out just to find another crazed angel wanting to be god, Metatron. The angels fell we tried and failed to close the gates of hell. Beat Metatron but a prince of hell from the past came through a portal and we had to find a way to kill him. That meant finding Cain, the first murder, Dean and I took the Mark of Cain so we could use his magic knife. Killed the Prince of Hell, but the marks drove us half insane. Metatron killed Dean and me, we became demons. Don't worry Sam cured us after we went on murder sprees. Got the mark of Cain off but that frees Amara, god's sister from her cage. So Castiel let Lucifer possess him to help us. God came back from vacation, he and Amara made up and floated away in a big light. Amara brought back our mother. Hitler came back, killed him. Lucifer possessed the president, impregnated his lady friend and sent the secret service after us. Got us landed in prison at Site 94, escaped. These crazy British people tortured us, then asked to become friends so we killed them all. More Princes of hell came out to look after Lucifer's unborn son, that child - Jack - killed them through Castiel. Crowley - king of hell and family friend - killed the other Prince. Then Jack was born, ripped open a portal to another universe. Lucifer killed Castiel and Crowley, Jack's mother died during the birth, then our mother pushed Lucifer through the portal - it shut. We adopted Jack, he brought Castiel back to life, Micheal is trying to come from an Alternate Reality to take over the world. Not to mention that he wants to wear Dean or I like an expensive suit."

"So that is why you aren't ever going to be real hunters," Y/N hissed. "Because I won't let anyone else go through that."

I made this last because this is in my promo and honestly, this entire song fits constantine to a T. this song has a lot of religious analogies to it which fits well with constantine.

in the bible, cain is one of the sons of adam and eve-- the other son being abel. god accepted a sacrifice from abel but not from cain, which caused him to grow jealous and murder abel. this was considered the first crime ever committed.

so, although constantine may appear to be "upstanding," in other words a role model/respectable, he does commit pretty horrible crimes. he's more of a "cain" in this situation. this ties in to how, although constantine thinks the government is corrupt, in reality, constantine himself is no better. perhaps he may even be worse.

Thought: Half of why John is more accepting in 14x13 than most of us would expect based on his past behavior is because John kinda thinks it's a dream. The other half is because he is just a better person when Mary is around. See the "John would have hated John" posts re 5x13.

I’m gonna use this opportunity to point out a few things about the episode that I think a lot of people may have missed, because it goes a very long way toward understanding John’s reaction here:

2003 John, who from the way he showed up in the bunker, armed and apparently mid-fight... I can’t even imagine the shock of suddenly finding oneself supposedly sixteen years in the future, you know? And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

From Donna’s cabin, where Mary was before they called her back to the bunker, it would’ve been approximately a 12 hour drive. Sam and Dean had TWELVE HOURS or so to talk with John before we rejoin them in the kitchen just before Mary shows up. Because heck, they had SIXTEEN YEARS worth of stuff to catch him up on, you know?

First off, he had to be so shaken when he arrived. He might’ve been thinking he get clobbered in the fight he’d thought he was in and was this all a hallucination or a dream? Or was he actually killed, and this was heaven or something? Who even knows what he could’ve been thinking at first, but he seemed to pretty quickly accept that it was real.

This is where one of the lessons the show has been encouraging us to learn really comes in useful. That being, STUFF HAPPENS OFFSCREEN and the show has encouraged us to accept the fact that what happens offscreen actually counts. So we have to assume that in the hours upon hours they talked with John, they laid out the vast majority of stuff that’s happened in the last decade and a half.

Some of it would probably be pretty difficult to hear, like the fact John didn’t survive to get revenge on Azazel (heck, 2003 him might not even know he was legit getting CLOSE even), but that Sam and Dean DO. How difficult would it be to tell this version of John that Dean sold his soul to save Sam, that he spent 40 years in Hell and was rescued by an angel, to tell them about how angels and demons were manipulating them all for decades to start the apocalypse?

Or that Sam let himself be possessed by Lucifer to stop the apocalypse, pulling both Lucifer and Michael into a cage in Hell to save the world? Like... this is still just the tip of the iceberg here... There’s still Raphael and the second attempt at the apocalypse, Soulless!Sam, Dean’s year in the suburbs, Purgatory, Leviathans, how they’ve befriended angels and demons and monsters oh my... oh, and God. Who also wrote a series of novels about their lives that are technically one of the gospels now... all the way up to how Dean earned a gift from God’s sister, the primordial darkness herself... that Mary has been resurrected...

Plus all that stuff about time travel and alternate universes they’ve experienced.

And for John, personally, the story of how they discovered the bunker in the first place, when the father John had always thought abandoned him as a child had actually traveled into the future, saved Sam’s life, and was killed by the demon Abaddon in the process. I mean THAT RIGHT THERE had to be a horrific shocker to learn, you know?

For JOHN, that’s possibly the most life-alteringly earth-shattering thing they could’ve told him, you know? Just to have an ANSWER to that question that had plagued him since HE was four years old and his dad disappeared off the face of the earth. Not to mention learning that he should’ve been a MoL legacy himself, and that if his father hadn’t been hunted through time by a Knight of Hell, John would’ve grown up “in the life” of monsters and magic himself... Kinda an eye opener, you know?

Oh, and learning that their family was a bloodline going all the way back to Cain and Abel (yes, that Cain and Abel, and by the way Dean killed Cain that one time), and that their family was part of a much larger cosmic plot to bring on the apocalypse in the first place, and Azazel-- John’s lifelong obsession-- was only the first step in all of that and a whole bunch of worse stuff happened after.

Oh, plus, Dean killed Hitler.

They’ve met Samuel Colt, Eliot Ness, Dean was on a sub during WW2 for a day or so, and traveled back to 1973 and 1978 and met with John both times (oh, and Dean was the dude who talked John into buying the Impala when he’d intended to buy a stupid VW van).

And this is STILL only scraping the tip of the iceberg here... They talked for TWELVE. HOURS. or so...

Sam and Dean have had some shockingly full lives, you know? It’s not even a surprise to me that after all that, after seeing the evidence of his sons’ lives laid out like that for him-- the good, the bad, the cosmic and the mundane-- (GOD! HIMSELF! MADE THEM PANCAKES! RIGHT OVER THERE!) that John’s only possible reaction would be to understand just how far his children went after his death.

In the wake of learning all of that, what they went through pre-2005 is just kinda... overshadowed, you know? Almost unreal itself.

But yeah, because of all of this ^^, and then the absolute SHOCK of seeing Mary again after all this time, after spending the majority of his adult life seeking revenge and justice for her death, and the long and painful search for the truth that kinda wrecked ALL their lives, to see her again alive and happy and whole... well, heck... everything else kinda pales to that. The literal horror show he and Sam and Dean endured (even the bits that were blatantly his fault) just... they’re suddenly worth it all, just for that moment, you know?

In a weird way, in that moment John had the burden of suffering with Mary’s death lifted off of him, and he could stand there in the perspective of that more innocent John from 1978 who’d unwittingly judged his own future actions so harshly. For one night, he got to step through to the other side of all that trauma and look back on it from a point where he and his family had finally WON. Where they’d emerged from it and built a life for themselves that he might never be able to understand, but he can appreciate it.

Even in 1.21, he told Sam that his goal was to finally be able to walk away from their mission when it was done, for Sam to be able to go back to school, for Dean to have a normal life, for him to finally be able to rest thinking he’d been able to serve Justice on Mary’s behalf. John himself didn’t even plan to continue hunting out beyond killing the demon who killed Mary, you know? I’m not sure he even had considered a future at all for himself out beyond that singular life goal. Because that’s what living for revenge does to a person.

But this also offered him the fresh perspective that of course there wasn’t really an end to hunting, and that Azazel wasn’t the Final Boss they’d needed to defeat. And he’d have some small notion of just how awful the burden he’d left Sam and Dean with all those years ago-- which THIS John is still THREE YEARS AWAY FROM DUMPING ON THEM.

Ow, time travel.

Granted, the episode didn’t try to explain or defend any of this to the audience, because it should never HAVE to... Can you even imagine how much of a mess of an episode that would’ve been if they’d even tried? Because the story of this episode was being told on multiple levels:

they didn’t try to overwhelm the GA with all of this heaviness, because the GA wouldn’t even care. The GENERAL notion of Sam and Dean’s lives to this point and their emotional states in canon during s14 would be enough of an explanation (trust me that the GA doesn’t have Strong Feelings about John the way Fandom does)

this was also the big PR push episode this season, and a lot of JDM folks likely tuned in just for him while having only a tangential knowledge of SPN canon to go on... introducing 14 seasons worth of emotional turmoil for their sake is kinda... pointless...

They assumed that people in the fandom who ARE invested in these characters emotionally would actually understand all of this already without needed to be spoon-fed all of this again

Because that’s how writing works. The writers have to trust that the audience is actually engaging with the story and possesses critical thinking skills.

I think some of the disconnect here was that we each went into this episode with our own personal baggage attached, with our own feelings about how WE might personally react if we were in Sam and Dean’s positions here. And if Sam and Dean didn’t react the way we hoped they would, whether it be via expressing anger at John over how he raised them, or just yelling about any or all of the above, then it was OUR job as the Thinking Audience to ask WHY, and to consider the past fourteen years of canon in coming to a clearer understanding of Sam and Dean themselves.

I wrote something the other day (yesterday? maybe... hang on... http://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/182723615495/rosewhipped22-so-i-havent-rewatched-lebanon-yet) about Dean’s wish that the pearl granted, because he HAS been thinking about his entire life-- including the baggage he’s been trying to lay down all season exemplified in his conversation with Sasha about her father in 14.05. And I think this episode nailed that aspect of Dean’s personal growth, by bringing John back the way they did and specifically NOT making it about anger or bitterness, but about finally being accepting of HIMSELF and of the entirety of his own life, setting down all the shit he can’t change while also acknowledging that he wouldn’t change any of it if it meant it wouldn’t bring him to this current point in his life. And that is HUGE. That is GROWTH and MATURITY.

Because this episode wasn’t really about John at all, but about Sam and Dean (and even Mary) finally getting to lay John’s memory to rest so they can move forward without dragging his ghost along in their wake.

Season 11: What’s worth watching

This is the second of 3 installments (season 10, season 11, season 12) because I think 13 and 14 are worth watching fully **I personally LOVED season 14, I haven’t loved one that much since season 5** && plus, this way you can watch the very final season of Supernatural without being confused!

Season 10 HERE

Season 11

Ep. 1 is… eh. I feel like you have to watch it, since it introduces you to ‘The Darkness.’ 

Ep. 2 isn’t worth watching in my opinion. The angels still have Cas/torturing him for info - they say he’s not their brother because he’s always picking the Winchesters over heaven (duh… you’re just now figuring this out??). We meet the new “Death” which is pretty important - her name is Billy, and she has it out for the boys. Promises that the next time they die, she’ll be the one to reap them, and they won’t be coming back. Baby Amara is going crazy/eating souls. They do the angel needle-in-the-head brain hacking thing to Cas, but then he escapes, kills them, goes to the bunker. And Crowley steals Amara to raise as his own. 

Ep. 3 You don’t need to watch this either. Rowena is recruiting witches, Cas is at the bunker still dealing with his curse (boys helping him), they have to keep the poor guy chained up because they can’t control his curse/reactions yet. ** Cas is super adorable all cuddled up in his blanket that Dean’s always wrapping him up with. Amara is a kid now (like 9 or 10ish yo). Crowley is feeding her souls and giving her an education (basically watching hitler speeches and shit like that). Rowena cures Cas. 

The last 5 minutes are worth watching. It’s Dean/Cas. You get some adorableness with Dean cupping sick Cas’ cheek, and some happy feelings with the boys at the bunker. 

Ep. 4 is a MUST WATCH. Shot entirely from Baby’s perspective, and is just overall amazing. 

Ep. 5 I didn’t like this ep. at all. In fact, I don’t even think I watched the entire thing when the season aired. There is a little Ghostfacers reference by the couple that gets killed at the beginning, though, which is cool. Shows at the very end of the episode Amara watching Dean the whole time and she says this creepy, “Bye, Dean. I’ll see you soon.” 

Have I mentioned yet that I hate the darkness/amara? I do. I hate her. 

Ep. 6 Not worth watching either. Amara is still walking around all barefoot and creepy, eating souls. Papa Crowley is mad. Sam wants to bring Cas in to help with the Amara hunt and Dean isn’t happy about it, wants him to get a break since it’s been rough for him lately (awww). Cas has been binge watching TV (he’s watching a show that’s the equivalent of Jerry Springer or Maury, one of those “the results are in and you are the father!” shows). Dean teases him for it and Cas gives him some sass. Dean’s super worried about him. Cas tries to get himself to leave the bunker and gets a huge anxiety attack/flash-backs to when he hurt Dean under the spell, when he killed the angels, then when Dean beat him up and almost killed him when under the influence of the mark of cain, breaks down and can’t leave the bunker. Cas eventually leaves, tracks down Metatron who has been videotaping crap to see to the news. He interrogates Metatron about the darkness. Metatron breaks and tells Cas that God had to give up the only thing he had ever known in order to create the world - his sister, which is Amara. Dean & Sam show up to Crowley’s to kill Amara, Crowley tries killing Dean, Amara stops him. Dean can’t get himself to kill Amara. Amara points it out to Dean. She cups his cheek and is all creepy talking about how linked they are/how neither of them can fight their connection and it’s weird because she’s in a teenaged girls body and just… ew. Ew. Ew. EW. She says she came there to settle a score “the oldest score,” which is obviously talking about god. Oh, and Sam is getting weird visions about Luci in the cage. I know that was a lot of info, but I’m serious, the episode just isn’t worth watching in my opinion. 

Ep. 7 I have to say this is worth watching, because Donna is in it, and who doesn’t love Donna?!? Plus, it’s a good old fashioned hunt, which is so rare in this season. 

Ep. 8 Is a good one too. It’s a flashback episode, which anyone who knows me knows those are some of my fav.’s. Plus, it’s a pretty funny hunting episode. 

Ep. 9 Pretty important episode, so I’d suggest watching it. Big for plot. Amara is killing preachers left and right to piss God off. Sam is convinced talking to Lucifer will help because of his visions he’s been having, so he and Dean go to Crowley to see if they can talk with him somehow (Dean’s obvi not happy bout that). It is kind of entertaining watching Amara with the bible and trying to understand why all these people believe in him/think he’s great/yada yada. 

Ep. 10 Isn’t terrible. A continuation of a lot of the same stuff going on in 9. There’s some great Dean/Cas in this ep. so I’ll give it that. Post whump hurt comfort between the two of them is always my fav. Kind of a cool ep. bcuz it’s Luci and Sam walking through memories. A huge thing happens at the end, too. 

Ep. 11 Not that great of an ep. But it has a character that turns out to be a bit of a fan favorite, so I’d watch it for her (Eilene). Also, Lucifer/Cas is interesting. Misha does a great job there. There’s a bit of character development/insight with Dean, too. 

Ep. 12 This is a MUST SEE. Ep with Jodi, Claire, and Alex. Great dynamic to see. Plus a nice classic hunting ep. And, of course, the awkward family dinner at Jodi’s where the sex talk comes up? That’s just fantastic. Probably the best of the whole damn season. I loved it. 

Ep. 13 Honestly, this is boring as all hell. (in my opinion). I will say there’s a part where the monster shows people their deepest darkest desire, and it appears as Amara. Dean tells that to Sam and is very conflicted/hates it, and Sam points out that Amara is the sister of God, and it’s not Dean’s fault, because she picked him and now he feels these things because of her power. Says Dean can’t be blamed or judged. And he tells Dean that he believes him that Dean doesn’t actually want her, and that he wants her dead, but that Amara is controlling him. Which is like YEEEEEEEEEEEES. Because I hate Amara, AND I hate the whole Amara/Dean weird romance-esque type thing. This is literally the only plot, though. For the whole ep. They talk about this, and then Dean tells Sam Sam has to be the one to kill her when it comes to that because of the control Amara has over him, and Sam promises he’ll handle it. Save yourself 41 minutes and don’t watch it. 

Ep 14 This one is interesting. It has some time travel/Dean sent back to WWII times. Badass woman of letters in this ep that Dean gets to meet. Plus, Lucifer as king of hell is hilarious. Some decent plot going on here too. 

Ep 15 Honestly, I hated this ep. I also hate anything related to WWE and that shit too, though, so I dunno. Maybe you’d like it? It felt extremely pointless. Crowley escapes hell, goes to find a new weapon (Aaron’s rod), but Luci tricked him into thinking he escaped just so he could get ahold of the weapon. But then Crowley tricks Luci back, uses weapon against him. But then runs out of juice, and Luci is able to disappear. So. Basically. All that fucking happens is Crowley gets out of hell. 

Ep 16 This is a cool one because it involves flashbacks from when Bobby and Rufus hunted the same thing. We find out why Rufus gave Bobby that battle of Jack with the note that Jodi and Sam found in that episode from way back when, when they fought the time god. (I wanna say that was s9, but I’m honestly too lazy to look atm) 

Ep 17 This is a good one if you have time/feel like watching. Not really any plot, though. Dean takes some pills and overdoses in order to talk to Billy, and Billy mentions something called ‘The Empty’ that’s waiting for Dean when he dies. Tiny little thing mentioned there. BIG THING way later on in the series. Like… 3ish season from now? Other than that, though… eh. 

Ep 18 This one should be watched. Very plot heavy. If you feel like skipping it, you can read the paragraph below, it’s not vital to watch. Rowena is alive, explains how she survived (a magic thingy). She’s helping heal Amara. Crowley went and got the horn of Joshua for the battle against Amara, says he’ll give it to the boys if they promise to help him exorcise Luci from Cas and put him back in the cage. Luci is up in heaven terrorizing the poor angels. Has decided to become the new ruler up there. Amara attacks heaven with her dark smoke crap. Luci just giggles. Rowena is afraid of Amara/starting to fear her/regretting working with her. Rowena sends the boys a message that she’s alive, they work together to trap Luci. There is a great scene in here (starts around 26 minutes into the ep.) where Dean uses a spell to try to talk to Cas inside Luci. It’s so sad :( && Luci mocks Dean for being so upset/sad. Crowley possesses Cas’ vessel, so then all three of them are in there. There is some adorableness there when Crowley tries to tell Cas to eject Luci and Cas tells him no, but then when Crowley explains that Dean wants him to do it, Cas is like ‘oh, maybe I should then.’ Luci gains control, tries killing Amara with the horn of Joshua, doesn’t work. Like at all. She takes Luci captive and tortures. Dean and Sam agree to go find Cas and bring him home. 

Ep 19 MUST. WATCH. This is the gay hunters ep that got everyone so excited. And for good cause. Who doesn’t love seeing two manly hunters in love with each other, and who doesn’t love seeing Dean’s reaction to that?!?

Ep 20 is a must watch as well. You meet God, which is - ya know - a big fucking deal. It’s also a very entertaining/well-done ep. 

Ep 21 I’d say you have to watch this one too. Dean & Sam meeting God. Or, well, re-meeting him I suppose. There is SO. MUCH. EMOTION. In this ep too. Sam & Dean (even Luci) have so much to address when it comes to God. All of the things they’ve been put through. Their feelings of being betrayed. Abandoned. Especially Dean. Oh, my poor baby Dean. I just… he has such a hard time in this ep, but it’s a great ep. Much needed. Well done. Among other things. I could talk about this ep for a really long time, but I’ll just stop there. Oh, and a new prophet pops up, which is always great. He’s not my favorite (no one can replace Kevin) but he’s fucking hilarious, so that’s nice. 

Ep 22 Have to watch this too. If not for ALL THE PLOT, then for Luci and God going at it. Oh my. Such a great situation (And Misha did so so so well at it). Luci locked in his room listening to loud music like a pouty teenanger. God cooking pancakes and drinking coffee from ‘World’s Greatest Dad’ mug. I mean, Dean and Sam have to do a family therapy session for the two. Who doesn’t want to watch that?!? 

Ep 23 From there, ya might as well finish off the season.
