[No, it's not the same as
"zoning out" or "lost in thought"]
Dissociative disorders aren't the same as normal dissociation.

Last week we had a psychiatrist assessment. We got a draft copy of the drs papers back today to see if any changes needed to be made (stuff that we told the psychiatrist) and on the diagnoses list was DID.
So that confirms it. What we have. But that also means we have to face it and start therapy. Which is something we were afraid of, actually being diagnosed with a disorder that cannot be cured. Only managed through grounding and therapy. To any undiagnosed systems. A diagnosis makes you no different, your still loved <3

Can anyone share the process of being diagnosed with DID? In particular if you are Australian and/or knew about having DID prior to the diagnosis?
We have been being treated by our psychologist, who is a trauma specialist specialising in complex cases, for a while now. However, we believe it would be in our best interest to seek a proper diagnosis and recieve treatment for it from a DID specalist.
We are admittedly a bit frightened to. The only thing we have heard about it is either from people who were unaware of DID prior to the diagnosis and stories about how horrible and traumatic the diagnosis process was. So I would really appreciate it if anyone would be willing to share anything at all about what the process involves.

Remembering how the prismatic church of Light handled DID got me like O.O
Idc if you're pro-endo or not for this post. They had kids practically diagnosing other kids. They had kids telling kids diagnosis didn't matter at all and was worthless bs lies anyways.
Yes, a lot of research is outdated and still needs to be done. But they practically threw everything out the window. The adults too. The MODS too.
I'm talking 13 year old fully aware of every system member, fully controlled switching, splitting from getting a new snack and that member being fully developed in 30 minutes type "DID"
Multiple members like that. That are told they're breaking boundaries and you do you and the medical field isn't always right(true) so disregard all of it(bad).
Last I was there it was just a hivemind of these systems, and endos, and telling each other "you are/ you might be a system"
You know what's dangerous? Pushing delusions onto minors, telling them to be an endo system and delude themselves into having alters. Telling highly traumatized and sensitive minors they're a delusional disassociating system and don't bother getting fact checked by any medical professional.
Medical and therapy trauma is real. The system is very broken in many places. In a victim of that. But it's also incredibly good if you look hard enough. Discrediting it entirely and doing whatever that ^^^ is, is not better at all. It's arguably worse.

Hey, had a quick question. I saw that you're medically recognized, but not diagnosed? How does that work?
I mean that in the context of, I'm most likely a system, I want therapy, but getting diagnosed would fuck my life sideways.
Are therapists ok with not diagnosing systems if you ask? How does it affect stuff as far as therapy goes? (In the US, btw)
Hey anon, very blurry here, haha! Also in US, midwest area.
That’s usually how it goes prior to diagnosis. If you find a therapist who specializes in trauma or DID, they will generally do a whole “You have DID, let’s treat you for it.” And that’s called being medically recognized. I am recognized to have DID. If my therapist had the power to diagnose me, she would if that’s what I wanted. Us, her, and my nurse practitioner who works on my meds are all on board with us having DID and are actively treating me for it despite it not being on our medical record. We have many reasons for not wanting it on our medical record, so this works well for us. Getting dx’d would do almost no good for us, as there is no way we would ever qualify for disability assistance in the US and I am already getting the highest level of care I can really receive for someone with DID in my state. There might be an outpatient program of sorts however it wouldn’t require a diagnosis, just my therapist saying “yeah they’ve got trauma.” (Trauma-based outpatient group.)
Hope that answers your question. Medically recognized isn’t like a special title or process, it’s just your therapy team going “Yep! It’s DID👍🏻” and treating you for it, without the extra steps of finding a psych willing to dx you, paying for that psych, going through the frankly awful dx process, just to get a slip of paper that says what I and my team already know. I don’t need it for validation or anything, I’m well aware we are a system, our DID specialist knows we are a system and is treating us for it, and I don’t need it on my medical record currently. If that changes and the dx becomes necessary for one reason or another, I would consider it, but even then I am so hesitant. It’s a purely personal choice, so no hate to systems who go for the official dx. Good for y’all, that takes courage.
Have a good day, anon. If you have further questions, shoot another ask or a DM.

So uh. The new therapist? The dissociation specialist?
Says we definitely have DID.
We’re gonna take an assessment to “solidify” the diagnosis but. She said the words. She said “You definitely have DID.”
And I have….no idea how to feel. Relieved? Terrified? Both? Definitely both.
Any advice on what to do now would be greatly greatly appreciated.

Our therapist... Is it really ours? I fucking swear I’m the only one who pays the fuck attention!!! Anyway... She suggested We get reevaluated to get re-diagnosed. Because We have finally accepted what and who We are. But I don’t know if that could work against us. Our whole thing was to get more people seeking diagnosis so they couldn’t deny it’s existence anymore! But... I can’t be the only one in here that thinks that... may be not such a great idea. When We had the diagnosis, We were completely unaware. How will it affect us to know that is the reason We were being treated that way We were. Now We will KNOW why they think We’re insane. Why they look at us the way they do. I, Animal am not so sure I’m ready for that level of awareness yet.

Who was gonna tell me that sitting down on a cold hard floor alone in a room barely illuminated with only a small lamp light in the dead of night, hugging your knees while putting the same song on loop to play over and over and over again as you close your eyes and start rocking side to side softly and slowly for 30 minutes FELT SO GOOOD??

Things my ADHD has made me forget:
Where I put my damn keys JFC-- (they are in my hand)
Due dates if I don't set alarms
What day it is
Whether or not I gave my dog her after dinner treat (which she's fine with because it usually means she gets to double dip)
The 200+ videos in my "Watch Later" playlist
To Eat
Things my ADHD has not made me forget;
That I copy pasted an entire book into a paper and didn't cite it

If you aren't purposely faking it, then you're not fake, even if it turns out you aren't a system, you weren't faking, you just had the wrong label for your symptoms, its okay to be wrong, there's nothing morally wrong about it, and if it turns out you are a system you wouldn't have known if you didn't explore it,
Everything will be alright in the end, I promise, stay strong and keep fighting

me finding out i may have DID instead of OSDD-1b because we have a lot of amnesia apparently (so much so that it would most likely qualify us for a DID diagnosis) but it hides itself very well cuz we're extremely covert: wow that's crazy man, can't believe it! wait what's crazy? Hello
