tim should be one of the funniest character of all time when bruce starts acting like that loner, depressed, pushing people away man. like this isn't the teenage boy that pulled a grown ass man out of his depression after he lost his son. tim is supposedly the most like batman? fine so he knows what works. from personal experience. all tim has to do is smack that man on the head and scream at him to act right. (bonus about this is bruce can't say shit, bc they both just know; they both lock eyes and all timmy has to do is squint his eyes like a disappointed mother, daring him to try.)
keep in mind that tim will sit there pretending like azael didn't choke him out at all of 16, causing him to take a car and run out of the cave in fear; you think tim gives a fuck if bruce's fee fees start to get to him? no! it's called compartmentalizing bruce, schedule your attacks when you're free. thus, tim "bruce can you lock the fuck in" drake is taking no prisoners when something goes wrong and this man pushing 50 dressing like a rodent is having an unneeded anxiety attack from stress he caused on himself. meanwhile, there's a MAN BAT INFESTATION, LET US HELP!!!

5:57am
the parking garage was quiet, especially considering that the sun was barely rising and most of the rotating shift was already clocked in or finally leaving. you were part of the latter. although in the past twenty three minutes the only move you had made was to reach into the glove box of your 2011 toyota corolla for the unopened bottle of tequila.
tonight has been one of the hardest shifts you've encountered since transferring to the pittsburg medical trauma center, informally known as the pitt to the staff, to be closer to your older brother.
the tire of your corolla was digging uncomfortably into your back through the thin scrubs that adorned your body. though you made no move to aleve yourself of the pain. it was your sick and twisted way of punishing yourself for the events that transpired during your shift.
no one in the pitt had blamed you for the patients that you had lost today and in the beginning, you hadn't blamed yourself. but the more the deaths had piled up on your roster the more you began to ask yourself, 'could i have done more'.
yesterday, or more accurately last night, you had lost a record number of five patients in one shift. your first was an elderly woman from a group home, who had arrived after experiencing cerebrovascular accident, most commonly known as a stroke. she had been helping another resident of her group home with a crossword when she just slumped over in her chair.
it was hours before they had called emergency services and the blood clot in her brain damaged her brainstem before she entered the ed doors. she was dead for hours before you ever even got your hands on her. but still you blamed yourself. it was a habit you knew better than to indulge.
the next three patients were from a motor vehicle accident. it was three teenagers. a midsize sedan had run a red light at seventy miles per hour and was t-boned by a semi-truck. you hadn't found out until later that all three of the teenager had been under the influence of drugs but by the time you did find out they had all already died, one on your trauma table, one in the or, and one in the ambulance.
the last one, and the more recent reason for your drunken stupor in the parking lot of you employment, was a child. a little boy not even a year old. it hadn't been until you'd seen the the brain scans and seen the subdural and retinal hemorrhaging. the baby had been shaken so hard and for so long that his brain had swelled inside his own head.
the mother had been sad enough but the boyfriend acted like he had a million other places to be. after declaring the ten month little boy officially braindead, you had left it to the oncoming shift to inform the family and the police.
you had never clocked out so fast, skipping the 'goodbyes' and 'good nights' from your favorite nurses and fellow residents in favor of sitting on the dirty ground in the hospital staff parking garage downing your guilt into a now half empty tequila bottle.
said tequila bottle clinked against the pavement as you set it down, tiny splashes spilling out and on to your dark scrubs, scrubs you'd wished were dark enough to hide the blood stains on the cuff of your pants.
the tequila mixed with the blood as you tried to scrub it out. you stopped after the blood stain widened in size and opted for another large swig of the aforementioned alcohol before placing it once again in between your stretched out legs. the label had begun to peel at your habitual picking and turned sticky from the contents running down the side.
you lifted your right hands and drug it across your mouth catching the drops spilling out of the corners of your mouth with your jacket. for a moment you had mistaken the drop for tears, but it had hit you that you hadn't shed a single tear through this whole ordeal. and that only made you feel like more of a monster. we're you so good at compartmentalizing that you had lost all the feelings that had made you a real person?
you didn't have an answer for yourself, so instead, for what felt like the hundredth time in the last half hour, the tequlia bottle was back on your lips, pouring so much into your mouth you almost gagged at the burning sensation. but that is what you had deserved right?
after telling upward of four different family members that their loved ones, the ones that had come to her for healing, wouldn't ever open their eyes again. that they would never eat their favorite food again. or listen to their favorite music. you had throughly convinced yourself that you deserved every burning drop that slid down your throat and poisoned your liver.
if your patient couldn't count on you to save their organs, why did you get to keep yours healthy and functioning? it was backwards logic but you were far to wasted to argue with the darker part of your subconscious.
you sputtered out a cough and the bottle clanked against the concrete ground but that wasn't the sound that had completely over taken your nervous system. footsteps echoed across the parking garage and you almost felt guilty for losing your composure here instead of the confines of your own apartment.
the key word being almost, as the cruel part of your brain reminded you of the morbid tally of deaths you had wracked up today had far outweighed the lives you had been able to save.
you wanted to scream. if you had been alone, you might have. and if you were a least a little more sober you might have commended drunk for having enough sense to hold it in. you squeezed your eyes closed, tight enough you began to see stars dancing on your lids, although that might have been all the tequila talking.
'you planning to sleep it off on the pavement?'
you opened you eyes, albeit taking your time. the rising sun shined bright behind him, making him look almost ethereal. not that you need it to. in your eyes jack abbot was a angel sent form heaven. as much as he tried to portray himself as the gruff war veteran without a soft bone in his body, you had seen right though him.
perhaps that is why he had been trying to hard to avoid you, despite being your boss. if it hadn't been for his familiar voice, a voice that you had spent the last three weeks practically memorizing, you might not have realized it was him for the sun blinded your drunken eyes.
you tried not to be embarrassed that even drunken you held the same candle that sober you held for him. you hoped that he wrote off the flush in your cheeks to your inebriated state.
his voice was dry and flat, a voice he used with most everyone, but you especially. as if he was always trying extra hard to hide the uptick in his voice anytime you started talking to him. and he'd thought to himself, how foolish he felt. like a damn teenage, feeling things he was far too old and far too emotionally complicated to indulge in.
she squints at him from her position on the ground. he stood a few feet away, leaned on his dark black truck with an indifference he would swear was natural. as if he didn't have to practice at least once a day when he knew he'd be seeing you.
he still wore is black scrub top and dark wash cargo pants. you wondered if he usually came to work ready or changed in the locker rooms. not that you needed to know the inner workings of his routines. but a part of you felt yourself wanting to know.
you laugh bitterly. even your silly little school girl crush on your much older boss didn't lift your spirits. you stand, although you don't think what you did counts as standing as you nearly face plant into the concrete. the fact that your car is still so close to you is the only reason you were still on your own two feet, slouched agains your corolla. you hold on to the backseat door handle and you stumble and lean down to snatch the tequila bottle into your hand once again.
even those his arms are crossed over his chest, you clock the small twitch in his hands as you stumbled. if you weren't plastered beyond the point of no return you might have thought he wanted to steady you. once in your hand, you raise the bottle to your lips in attempt to curve the silence and maybe spare yourself any more embarrassing moments. though you know that he alcohol will not help in those terms.
'come on, lets not do that. i think you've had enough.'
'your not . . . my - my boss right now, dr. abbot,' you slurred, stretching out the syllables of his last name, 'im oooofff the clock.'
tequila bottle still in hand, you begin patting down your pockets for the keys to your corolla, huffing out triumphantly upon hearing the telltale jingle in your scrub pant pocket. you pull out the object and immediately he grunts in disapproval.
'you're not driving.'
he steps forwards a millimeter, intent on taking the keys from your hand but never actually making the move to do so. you scoff as your giddy feeling from his mere presence turns sour.
'i don't need a babysitter . . . and you can-can't tell me what to do.'
'you're right, but you're still not driving."
he takes another step forward and holds out his hand. 'give me the keys.'
you step back, defiantly, tugging both your car keys and the alcohol bottle close to your chest. and he doesn't miss the way the action pushes your breasts up. even in the most unsexy piece of clothing you own the action was creating the illusion that they were bigger than they actually were.
he thanks the heavens that your probably too drunk to notice the way he was ogling your chest. he should have known that you noticed everything about him, drunk or not. you feel your lips tugging into a slight smirk but then remember that your mad at him, however foolish the reason may be.
'or what?'
your statement must have surprised him, the shock written on his face was evidence of that.
'you gonna take them from me, dr. abbot?'
'if i have to.'
you laugh at that. this man, who makes it his priority to avoid you at all cost, he's gonna take them from you. now that is something you'd pay to see. he grunts at your defiance, because of course you were calling his bluff.
'if you think i'm just gonna walk away and let you drive like this, you are a lot drunker than i thought.'
his face is unreadable. but his stance isn't confrontational. there’s no righteousness. no judgment. just observation. cold, clinical, and just maybe a little tired, not that he'd ever admit that to you or anyone else for that matter.
but what ticks you off the most is the way he's looking at you. like you were a child. like you were a delinquent he's just caught stealing from their parents liquor. it pisses you off more than you'd like to admit because you weren't a child, no matter how much your older brother insists you still are.
and jack abbot is the one person you didn't want to see you like that.
'don't pretend you care.' you snarled, though it didn't sound as threatening as you had wished it did, as much as you had intended. he doesn't take your bait. he just tilts his head, the barest hints of annoyance in his eyes.
'don't paint me the asshole for doing the bare minimum, sweetheart.'
your breath hitched at the pet name. you were never 'sweetheart' to him. it was always 'dr. robin' and if you were lucky just 'robin'. the pet name was a slip up on his part, but he didn't feel too worried about as he knew you probably wouldn't remember any of this tomorrow morning anyway.
but for you , no pet name in this moment could curve your anger, your guilt. you glared at him as your breath hiccups. too sharp to be a laugh. too shallow to be a sob.
'you think this is the worst thing i've done tonight?"
you hadn't actually meant to ask that. and jack seems to of understood that because he didn't respond, at least not in words. his shoulder sag just a little as he remember to grueling shift the both of you just endured. you more so than him.
there was another long silence, fulled with nothing but your guilt and his bare look of sympathy that your refused to acknowledge. you next actions were purely in attempt to get him to stop looking at you in the way you had looked at yourself in the mirror just an hour prior.
despite your rash action of throwing your keys square at his chest, he still caught them. 'fine!' your yell echoed through the parking garage, 'you win! are you happy?'
though you refused to give up your tequila bottle even when he reached for it. you stumbled forward, probably in attempt to reach his truck, you weren't actually sure. your own feet tangle with themselves and you flailed around helplessly as you fell forward. the bottle fell to the ground and shattered with a sickening crack.
'woah there! come on.'
and if not for jack, you'd probably of hit the concrete with the same sickening crack. his hands gripped your waist as he pulled you into his chest. the grip was anything but professional. his fingers dug into her top as he tried to steady you. his touch made your head spin more than the alcohol did.
you, in turn, gripped his scrub top as if he was the only thing holding you up. and to be far that was probably true. he was warmer than you thought he'd be. the cold and nonchalant attending that you had come to know what acting like he was anything but. like nothing you'd experience from him.
you rested your cheek to his clothed shoulder and hummed as your eyes fell closed. if his face were half an inch closer to your head, it'd be resting against it. you could feel his steady breath on your ear, lightly swaying the fallen strands of your hair. for a second, you swore you heard his breath hitch much like yours did.
but your bliss was cruelly short lived. when you opened your eyes, you eye sight landed directly on the broken glass bottle to your right. you were upset for a number of reasons, rational and irrational. but the first one that came to your mind was that you would no longer be able to drown your sorrows from the inside out.
you mumbled out a quiet, almost to quiet to hear, 'no,' into his shirt. you pulled out of his grasp, despite his verbal and physical protests. you fall to your knees in front of the broken bottle. there was nothing to salvage but still you reached for the broken glass.
'hey, no, your gonna-' 'fuck!'
you groan as the sharp glass slices through the skin of your palm. its not deep enough to require stitched but it bled like it did. dripping blood on to the dirty concrete below.
'- cut yourself. christ, do you ever listen?' his jaw clenches. he's angry but not at you. its almost like he is angry at the cut itself, at the glass for harming you, even if it was you fault. because how dare anything cause you harm and get away with it.
he pulls his back pack off his back, not surprisingly fast or easy because it was only hanging off one shoulder to begin with. the back pack was green with a camo pattern and if you were so focused on the blood dripping down your wrist, you'd have probably noticed the personalization he had done to the front of it. in medium sized black bold lettering was his name. 'abbot'.
and of course he carried a first aid kit in it. he didn't say a word as he leaned down, groaning as he settled on his knees in front of you. he wasted no time at all reaching forwards and grabbing her wrist.
the reservations he had about getting too close flew right out the window the moment blood was drawn. she mumbled a drunken 'ow' as he applied the damp alcohol wipe to her already red skin, wiping the blood away.
'not gonna lecture me?'
'said it yourself, not your boss right now.' he tossed the now dark pink alcohol wipe in favor of grabbing a piece of gauze and medical tape. he wrapped the tape and you winced again. he glanced at you briefly.
'it's too tight.' you mumbled, reaching to loosen some of the tape, but jack grabbed your other hand in his, stopping you from doing anything. 'yeah, well, i'd rather you didn't bleed to death in my truck.'
you snorted, it was involuntary but you flushed with embarrassment anyway. it wasn't like he had just confessed his undying love for you but he had admitted that he didn't want you to bleed to death. that was an improvement, at least in you book.
'didn't know you cared, dr. abbot.'
'your my best resident, dr. robin. need you in tip top shape.'
and you were back to the professionalism. you weren't going to lie and say you didn't appreciate his sentiment. but was that all you wanted to be to him? his resident?
he must have noticed your shift in demeanor because not longer after and his touch left yours all together. his thumb that had been rubbing small circles on the inside of your wrist in an attempt to soothe, now left the space cold. the butterflies, no matter how cliche is sounded, that had taken up resident inside your stomach and under your ribcage had settled the moment his skin left yours.
you wanted to reach out and put his hand back in yours and to be honest, you almost did. you had the ultimate excuse and your drunken state gave you the perfect alibi.
THE END

top 5 bruce and jason father-son moments?
5. DETECTIVE COMICS (1937) #596
this one is kind of nothingburger to others but it's everything to ME because i read into nothingburger things all the time. throughout bruce and jason's run as batman and robin a huge thing of notice is that in costume jason rarely ever calls bruce anything other than batman. take that as you will, secret identity shenanigans aside. but then:
Tumblr media
this is followed by bruce busting out of the trap, saving them both AND calling him jay. it moves me everytime i read it.
4. BATMAN URBAN LEGENDS (2021)
okay im going to cheat a bit and include 2 (technically 3) moments here but they're from the same story so... i have many (MANY) issues with the cheer story but the part where jason calls out to bruce during a desperate situation, bruce shows up and jason seems genuinely surpised? FLOORED.
Tumblr media
AND THEN. AND THEN. not only is jason's deepest joy bruce killing the joker and being a family, but bruce's deepest joy (that almost drove him mad enough to kill someone, btw) is ALSO KILLING THE JOKER AND RECONCILING WITH JASON. like goodbye. terrible awful plot with life ending revelations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. DETECTIVE COMICS (1937) #542
nocturna arc in general is probably one of the best jaybin arcs ever. but this moment right here...
Tumblr media
i dont even need to add any thoughts just read this shit and really focus on the "i wouldn't shed a single tear if it [his wealth] all vanished [...] after they came and took jason away from me, i broke down and wept." "money is fine gentlemen, but it isnt real. right now only jason is real." and if it wasn't already ruining my life, the batsignal comes on while bruce is working with his lawyers to gain custody of jason again and he flat out refuses to leave because this is more important.
Tumblr media
2. ROBIN 80TH ANNIVERSARY 100 PAGE SUPER SPECTACULAR: MORE TIME (2020)
i can't even formulate any words for this one it's just. world ending. i would add the entire thing if i could. jason "they could never make me hate bruce wayne" todd.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. BATMAN: UNDER THE RED HOOD (2011)
in first place to the surpise of no one, i imagine. the comic entirely, yes, but specifically:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they spend literally every moment before this fighting. there is no trust. not a single moment of wavering doubt. UNTIL THIS. without evening thinking, jason takes up the role as robin and backs up batman by performing a move they've done for YEARS. jason jumps towards him and for a moment, doesn't doubt that bruce understands, and won't drop him. bruce later goes on to say that this particular move leaves his back exposed, which is where robin will usually be standing (since batman will act as a shield for the explosives he's thrown) (THAT ITSELF IS INSANE TO ME BUT WHATEVER) and for a moment wonders if red hood will take the opportunity to stab him in the back.
he doesn't.

DAMIAN WAYNE - Batman and Robin (2011) - Robin: Son of Batman - Robin (2021) - The Boy Wonder - Batman & Robin (2023) (currently ongoing! imo this would be a good place to start reading since its happening right now so you can see it happen along with everyone else!)
DUKE THOMAS - Batman: Zero Year - We Are Robin - Batman & The Signal
HELENA BERTINELLI - Huntress: Year One - The Huntress (1989) - Batman/Huntress: Cry for Blood - Helena is also a character in birds of prey from issues #57-127 and a reocurring bat character in the 90s
STEPHANIE BROWN - Detective Comics #647-649 - Showcase '95 #5 - Robin (1993) #126-147 (steph has a ton of appearances in Robin 1993 so it would be good to read that for more or to look through her appearances on locg if you just want to read about her! these chapters are her as Robin.) - Batgirl (2009)
I haven't read a super large amount for every single one of them so disclaimer that some of the ones I mention here might not be their best! These are what I could think of but there are plenty more, especially as standalone issues, so if anyone sees this please mention more!! also, there are lots of comics that are questionable but this list was very much on the fly off the top of my head so i was kind of sat here with my head in my hands like 'god i need to give more than one jason todd comic dont i....' and this was all i could come up with that wasnt like.... a random detective comics issue idk
I'd also like to say these feature a lot of minis just for ease but there are a ton of really good guides available for these character -- imo a lot of Jason's best stuff is as Robin within tec and batman

On the misconception of Jason attempting to take Tim's life at Titans Tower:
I've seen people be confused about this one, so I figured I'd provide some context/ analysis/ what have you, for anybody who might be interested.
Now, the incident we're talking about occurred in issue 29 of the 2003 Teen Titans book.
There is a lot that could be said about the whole issue, but in the interest of not having this post run on forever, let's just focus on the end to the actual physical altercation between Jason and Tim:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jason warns Tim of the dangers associated with being Robin. He uses himself as a cautionary tale, making it clear that this isn't about envy; that Jason has no interest in being Robin again himself. That that's not what this is about.
Then he knocks Tim out.
Tim is unconscious for a while and Jason uses this opportunity to very dramatically put the word out there that, yep, he is indeed the real Jason Todd and he's ready to cause trouble.
When Tim comes to again, he is injured, yes, but okay overall. He isn't bleeding out on the floor, close to death. In fact, he's very much able to just sit up and have a normal conversation with people. All in all Tim is fine, and Jason has left.
And, well, that's that. At least from Tim's perspective.
The issue actually concludes with a really interesting page featuring Jason's narration:
Tumblr media
Here we see Jason easily concede that Tim is good. No malice, no hate, no ill wishes towards him. And Tim is doing fine. Jason is shown to be in no way surprised that Tim is alive and well, back out in the field. Because he was never out to seriously injure Tim, let alone kill him.
Jason didn't want to take Tim's life at all. He had ample opportunity to do so, but he didn't. One of the reasons the whole confrontation went down the way it did, is because Jason was genuinely excited to meet Tim (see the intro narration of the issue). Aside from delivering the warning discussed above, Jason wanted to see for himself what Tim is capable of, what makes him tick. And he has no problem admitting that Tim is indeed good at what he does.
It's obviously an important incident in their lives, but Tim was never in any real danger here. Getting into brawls is nothing crazy at all in their line of work, and Tim has canonically acknowledged that he holds no ill will towards Jason over the whole thing, e.g. here in issue 8 of the 2011 Red Hood and the Outlaws book:
Tumblr media
Summary/ conclusion: Does Jason feel guilty about things he's done to Tim in the past? Yes. Does Tim hold it against him? No. Was their fight at Titans Tower a murder attempt? Not at all.
Thanks for reading! I hope this helps clear some things up for anybody wondering (:
Bonus: Jason talking about Tim in Battle for the Cowl (2009) #2

Hey I've seen a lot of your batman posts (I only know batman in passing. I know what he is and I know the joker exists and there's robin but like there's a lot of robins so that's not super helpful - that's the extent of my knowledge) but I don't know about like any of the characters you post about.
I recently found out my local library has a big collection of batman comics on e-reader, so I wanted to see if I could get into it! However, there's a LOT of them, and I don't really know where to start. Do you have any suggestions on artists/writers, or arcs, or even specific titles or characters that would be good for beginners/things you'd recommend? Any that I should avoid?
/Disclaimer i'm not the biggest fan of Batman himself so this will be mostly The Batkids
The 1st Robin is Dick Grayson. The og Teen Titans run from the 60s,New Teen Titans,The Titans 1999 and Outsiders 2003 are her best writing and unless you can stomach copganda and misogynoir pedobait retcon Nightwing x Batgirl i wouldn't recommend her 90s solo
The 2nd Robin is Jason Todd. He's my romantic f/o and the reason i started reading comics so i did a whole masterpost on him but all you really need is to watch Under The Red Hood and read Lost Days.Btw if people make jokes about him 'fucking Damian's mom' you should know she actually adopted Jason(and the scene was written by someone who admitted they never read her comics and made it not canon afterwards)so it's just people being weird about incest/csa survivors and wanting to demonize a brown arab woman
The 3rd Robin is Tim Drake.Robin 1993,Young Justice 1998 and Red Robin 2009 are his necessary reads and Teen Titans 2003 is a to avoid for life
The 4th Robin is Stephanie Brown. She appears prominently in Tim's Robin thing and has her own thing as Batgirl 2009
The 5th Batkid is Cassandra Cain. Her debut is No Man's Land, her jumpstart is Batgirl 2000 and she's back in Batgirl action in Batgirl 2025.Don't look up her Orphan books or the Birds of Prey movie
The 5th Robin to ME is Duke Thomas.@/Duketective comics has all his apperances listed in their bio so please read all of them except maybe Wayne Family Adventures.Duke was the first black Robin and the only reason Jason came back to the Batfam and Batstans have never stopped lying about him to swallow their copium over it.No Tim and Jason were not a wasted duo.....They hated eachother before they even knew eachother and the only reason you see is a tragedy is you're obsessed with white boys and think black kid trauma isn't real or significant enough.Jason disagrees
The 6th Robin to me is Damian Wayne. His origin story was an orientalist mess so just read the Son of Batman comic,Streets of Gotham,Gotham Academy,Supersons,Robin 2021 and Batman and Robin 2023 for him
And misc stuff is The Batman 2004 cartoon for Daddybats himself, the 90s Birds of Prey comic book series for the yurious, both Bombshells series',Lego Batman:Family Matters(og Lego Batman Movie was ass and i will not be silenced),Kingdom Come and Batman:Future's End.Robins 2021 is the ugliest shit i've ever seen in terms of art and writing taste alike, followed up only by Red Hood and The Outlaws 2011 and Batgirls 2022 is only enjoyable if you like Stephcass but cutesified in a sorta good way

well how about the main boy himself Jason? Unless u already got an ask for him, then how about rose wilson?
Nobody’s mentioned the best boy yet so sure! ^_^ I’m doing my best to stay concise here since my one on DG was too, too long. 😞
How I feel about this character: honestly, I can’t summarise some of the reasons I find him interesting like I did for DG, but rest assured I love him. I think about him at least 3 times a day, every day. I wasn’t kidding when I said I was obsessed.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: the very specific flavour of Jaykyle that plays with their “Catholic who became the singular wielder of the universe’s strongest weapon + eventually became a god x brought back by a divine force + motivated by a quasi-religious fever but agnostic at best” dynamic. Now we’re getting onto more speculative territory, but vibe-wise, JT reads as a hopelessly romantic gay guy to me. I think he’s just too much of a misandrist to realise this. RE: Talia, Isabel, Essence, Rose, + Artemis (his canon love interests), every single interaction he’s had carries with it the vibe of a guy who likes the company of women so much that he just goes along with women who are sexually interested in him. But he isn’t actually attracted to them/loves them. That’s my opinion anyway. I respect those who see otherwise of course of course <3.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Jason & Bruce plague my mind. I like any Jason dynamic TBH, you can always make it fun in some way if you try hard enough.
My unpopular opinion about this character: neither right nor wrong morally when you factor in how he bridges between morality in-universe (killing as the ultimate signifier of evil, except when states or wielders of the state’s monopoly over the legitimate use of force do it) + morality when recognising the DC world for what it is (fictional + cursed with eternal bloodshed). His whole appeal is his liminality, + how he’s positioned between binaries like life/death, hero/villain, just/unjust, etc. He’s most interesting to me when he’s used as a vehicle to deconstruct those categories.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish he’d get a good solo run. I kind of wish he hadn’t been crowbarred into a villainous role from the late 90s/early 00s onward to exculpate BW for getting a kid killed <3. It’s great material for me to work from in terms of fan stories, but I could do without DC trotting out their victim-blaming OOC Robin II stories + giving me psychic damage. RE: past stuff -> I half-wish (in addition to Red Hood: Lost Days), he’d gotten instead of B&R #23-5 another Post-Crisis mini (maybe Lost Days II?) that charted his development from 2005 to 2011. I say half-wish b/c I think DC would have done an abysmal job. I’ll probably write it personally myself one day, I just wish someone recognised he goes through an unintentional character through line of increasing meta textual awareness + subsequent ‘madness’. Maybe then he could have been reconciled to his post-2011 Batfam affiliation properly without people still complaining about it 14 years later.

nao which comics r u reading rn??? or will read later on
I'm reading Teen Titans (1966), I've read separated issues and character's origins plus short comics like Robin: Year One, Batman Universe, Teen Titans: Year One, and I did start Red Robin, but then abandoned it 'cause I realized it'd be better to read more about Robin!Tim first.
I'm planning on starting New Teen Titans after I finish the Teen Titans, and after that New Titans. I'll probably also read Young Justice (1998) and then some Green Arrow and Flash comics to start with them. I'm also considering Green Lantern after all that and Superman and Wonder Woman comics are on my list too.
(I should consider the Justice League comics, too, to have an overall knowledge of the whole team)
Of course, since Dick Grayson is my favorite, I'll be prioritizing his comic runs also. I don't think I'll read the Nightwing (2016) run though, we'll see. Then I also have to read Batman: Battle for the Cowl and Batman and Robin (2011).
And I don't think I'll ever get to read the main Batman comic complete, but I'll read some important arcs in there, too.
I think that's all I have planned?
If anyone has any recs though, I'd appreciate them!

When it comes to canon it's often hard to separate what is true and what is bad writing/writer's choice.
For example it's easy to say that batman & robin All-stars is a bad comic but how much of what is "parodying" (Millar shitty excuse for being a mediocre writer) is true?
I'm gonna admit that I haven't had a lot of experience with batman comics (I have read probably around 200 of them? For the affiliated heroes even less I think; 85% of Tim's robin run, Cass Batgirl run, Batgirls, an Azrael mini series, Dick's tenure as batman, Damian year of the blood, batman & robin 2011 I think, red robin and no man's land) but can you actually say that Bruce isn't a an abusive parent? Starting from the 80s up to today the character has had a significant change of personality and story from his earlier incarnations, I wouldn't call him abusive with earth 1-2 Dick Graysons and pre-crisis Jason todd. The characters have some bad habits and issues that they have picked up because of Bruce but they are completely fine, things started to change after the crisis and they have never really gone back have they?
And honestly what does that say on how a character is supposed to be? It's an uncomfortable thought to have about characters that have existed for so long, is the writer wrong for following in the footsteps of those who have done the same before him? Like Gotham war is no different from stories like Tim's 16 birthday or Bruce original parenting plan for Cass.
I can't get mad for how things are today without looking back on how they where, I can't say that batman is a good or bad parent without erasing his actions and the situation at hand (saying he's a "complicated" dad is racist, sexist and ableist because you are trying to justify his actions when he is a grown ass man).
Simply ignoring those stories won't change the fact that they still are there, the fact is that now that's who he is and it's not very fun to read about a superhero who is actually a supervillain.
Also this goes for any character who has existed for decades, writers grow up reading about them different and that's how we end up with stuff like modern day Spider-Man.

So question, sorry if youve answered this before I haven't seen it in your FAQ. Ive been reading through some Jason centered comics but want to know which ones you think capture his character best. It seems like you have strong opinions on his character and I'd like to see which comics of his best represent him!
depends which Jason we're talking about but if we're focusing on red hood Jason I prefer when he's written by Winnick so that's mostly under the red hood and losts days and then not all but some of batman and robin (I can't remember off the top of my head if it's 2009 or the 2011 run but one of those two)

10, 11, 12, 13, 17, 25, 26, 27, and 28 for the comics ask game! (feel free to break up or just the ones you want to)
coming from this ask game
i'm going to skip 26 + 27 because when i tried to do it i realized a) certain art styles have grown on me and b) i was hard-pressed to find a comic that fit bc i don't collect books i don't enjoy, unless i'm getting it purely for the variant cover...at which point i like neither the writing nor the interior art lmao. sorry!!
10. The prettiest cover
Tumblr media
from top to bottom, left to right Red Hood: Outlaw (2016) #27, Batman (2016) #150, Tim Drake: Robin #10, Nightwing (2016) #94
-est's are sooooo hard for me, and i'm so indecisive, and there's so many art styles...so i picked these four lmao. i have so many pretty covers okay, i tried.
this picture does not do it justice, but the red hood issue is foiled and i just love it. foil is fun in general, but i feel like it makes the blood more...bloody? wow i'm so eloquent. IT'S COOL IMO OKAY. not that this is shocking to anyone, but i am v obsessed with pink...the batman cover is pink. but also!! bruce is smiling. and the motion of the cape feels so lush. it just makes me happy. um. so. the tim cover. listen. the color palette is pretty, i love the early dawn + his bright colors. also. he's pretty. NEXT. i adore this nightwing cover. it's so soft, like it kinda looks like it was done with, crap idk my art mediums, oil pastels? the texture is so smooth. plus, i love like the scene and all the details, like it's just so satisfying.
i'm realizing i may have defined 'prettiest' strangely. oh well.
11. The ugliest cover
Tumblr media
Teen Titans (2011) #18
ngl i probably have uglier covers but like WTF why does his face look like that. (the struggle here was that i either buy covers i like or the cover is completely irrelevant, so then i was neutral about like...pretty much every book i bought for content not cover lmao.)
12. Your favorite comic you have
Tumblr media
Robin (1993) #10, 13, 46, 156
just for you, i did the tim drake edition version of this question hehe. hang on, lemme compose myself so i can be mostly normal about these comics. *muffled screaming* alright!!
first!! ROBIN!DICK AN ROBIN!TIM ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! with jason-haunting-the-narrative angst?! to die for. then we have tim being robin to dick's batman, so fun, with a healthy serving of bruce and dick angst and they actually communicate a bit. so frickin good. i've talked before about how much i love love love #46, and that has not changed- i revisted it recently and *oh my godddddd*. tim struggling with robin vs. tim drake, and then utterly failing despite his best efforts when he was already questioning if he even makes a difference? fuck yes. sorry. and then!! super-depressed!timbo talking a would-be jumper into not jumping and then calling dick? words cannot express the sheer !!!!!!!!!!!!!! i feel about these issues. this is me trying to be normal about them, that's how bad it is. as with the previous answer to 12, i have pages of these comics eternally memorized.
13. Your least favorite comic you have (and why you originally grabbed it!)
Tumblr media
Red Hood: The Hill
allow me to explain my comic buying method. first of all, i try to buy only comics i've read + liked, unless i like the cover or it's a current release. so this is a little bit recency bias, but also current stuff is pretty much the only thing i'll be buying blind for the story itself.
i picked up this mini bc it was marketed as a jason run. HA. you could completely cut him from the story and like. so little would change. his only relevance was marketing. the story itself was also like, super boring to me, but in the spirit of fairness + acknowledging bias, i was enticed by a jason story and not given one. so. if i'd come to the run expecting an oc + batman i might've had a very different experience.
if this had been out on dcui, i would not have picked this run up. maybe the dan mora covers if i saw them when digging through boxes. but purely for the covers.
17. comic you picked up just for the cover art
Tumblr media
Batman (2016) #50, Nightwing #81, Task Force Z #8, Robins #3
have not read the issue yet, bc i have not kicked off my Big Batman Read Through, but i am fairly certain it will upset me when i get to it lmao. i have a soft spot for sketch covers, i think they're so neat. plus this one is so evocative. technically, the nightwing cover may not count bc i'm sort of collecting all of nightwing, but at the time i bought it purely for the cover. the graffiti is fun, dick + tim + milkshakes = cute!! i enjoyed task force z, but not enough to buy the run, however when i saw this cover i had to get it. idk how to express it but the composition tickles my brain in the best way. ugh so cool. MARCUS TO TIM?!?!?! HELLO?! WHAT MORE NEED I SAY?!
25. The comic with the coolest variant cover
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) #107, Red Hood: Outlaw #35, Batman and Robin (2023) #1, Tim Drake: Robin #2
i do not yet have the comic(s) with the coolest variant covers i want, so i decided to do a cover for each robin! dammit tim and damian are in the wrong order. dick through the ages by dan mora? amazing. just. so cool. so fun. enjoy the atmosphere on the red hood one + his reflection being in a puddle of blood, very classy. dami and bruce just look so 🥹🥹🥹. love the lighting/composition. and now is when i joke that i almost just did all the dan mora tribute covers lmao. very much love them all, but the dick and tim cover is my fave. like. it's just so sweet. the brothers. the homage. the !!!!!!!!!! of it all. gah i love them sm fr
28. A run you have completely collected (trades, singles, or mix!)
Tumblr media
Red Robin (2009)
it has literally just occured to me that i could have also done TT's nightwing run but...eh. much prouder of this!! this is the first run/title that i decided to collect completely and it was so much fun hunting the issues down. man, i felt so accomplished when i brought #25 home. and i got it for a steal too, so like bonus happy points 💅🏼
brief story time, so i picked this up fairly early on into my comics collecting when i was really trying to be very, very selective. i think i maybe was looking specifically for #17, where bruce is back and tim gets a hug, and the vendor had that one + a bunch of others and i was geeking out a little bit showing diff panels to my spouse and they were like, "so we're getting them all, cool." "no, it's fine-" "dude. your whole face is so lit up right now." i lost (won?) that argument. it is still so mind-blowing to me how supportive they are of the things that bring me joy. completely antithetical to my upbringing. anyways!! so yeah, this is also the run that spurred me to collect the way i do today. i tried to be more restrained. i was ✨enabled✨
tysm for the ask!! i had such a blast answering, i hope you enjoy the answers!!

Dick's memories:
I've been working on this part for 6 months. I wrote a lot of it from memory and then went to find the panels and check I was characterising them correctly (and add the attribution).
There are some big moments in Dick and Tim's relationship referenced here, of course. But wherever possible, I tried to choose slightly less well known moments, or an alternate panel from the main one pointed to in that issue.
Some fun facts:
38 footnotes, referencing 34 separate comics (I use two scenes from the same issue for 4 comics: Batman, Nightwing, Robin, and Gotham Knights)
15 different comic runs are referenced (Batman, Detective Comics, Azrael, Birds of Prey, Nightwing, Robin, Red Robin, Batman: Shadow of the Bat, Gotham Knights, New Titans, Showcase '93, Joker: Last Laugh, Identity Crisis, Infinite Crisis, and Blackest Night: Batman)
The years covered by the comics are the following: 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011.
The years missed are the following: 1989 and 1991.
1989: I skipped because I really, really wanted to open with Tim's first actual team up with Dick after A Lonely Place of Dying. Plus, Dick didn't really look and see Tim until after ALPoD. That's why no circus, no baby Tim, no origin story.
1991: Dick and Tim do not interact in any comic labelled 1991. They do appear in a single splash panel together.
I struggled with myself over whether to include 2009 or not, because I wanted moments of brotherhood between Tim and Dick, where they clearly cared for each other, and I didn't want to include any of Battle for the Cowl or the Red Robin fight. There were in the end only three stories that really qualified: The end of Heart of Hush; the 2008 Holiday Special (which has a Feb 2009 cover date); and Blackest Night: Batman. The only issue of Heart of Hush with a 2009 coverdate simply doesn't have any conversation BETWEEN Dick and Tim to use (they're too busy explaining to Tommy how much he screwed up); while I do like the Wonderful Life story, the costume handover was a bit too twee to fit anywhere into the flow of memories plus Owen Mercer's there; and in the end, I used the panel AFTER the panel of Blackest Night. This was a slight cop out in terms of the whole 'avoid the Red Robin fight' aim, but it's the one big moment that shows Dick and Tim were still in sync during that time, and in terms of the scene build it slotted quite nicely into the explosions-building-to-dead-Tim run of memories.
14 different writers created the comics (Marv Wolfman, Alan Grant, Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Dennis O'Neil, Devin Grayson, Scott Beatty, Brad Meltzer, Geoff Johns, Adam Beechen, Fabian Nicieza, Peter Tomasi, Christopher Yost, and Scott Snyder)
The most common writer was of course Chuck Dixon, who wrote 10 of the issues; Devin Grayson was in second with 6 issues.
The comic that appears the most often is Nightwing, with 6 issues; Gotham Knights has 5 issues appear.
I had great fun constructing this; I hope while you were reading it many of the scenes also played in your head.

Hey! I was just wondering if you had any good recommendations for timkon comics or reading lists or anything like that. Also I loved your recent Kon fic, it's so nice to see some support for my fave guy and you have such a great writing style. Thank you!
aw thank you so much, you're so sweet!! im glad you liked it :)
augh... so i am traveling presently and won't really have the time to sit down and properly look up what issues have the best timkon interactions specifically. (remind me in like... a week or so and i might be able to!!!) but if you want some general pointers: "superboy/robin world's finest three" is their first meeting! they have a lot of interactions in all of young justice 1998, and also i love them in sb94 #85 (this is the one issue i can easily name bc it's one of my favorites in the entire run). there's also some cute moments w them at the end of hypertension arc in sb94 but i don't recall the issues exactly, it's i think 60-64 but don't quote me on that. there's also an issue of robin '93 im thinking of but i can't remember specifically augh sorry
then there is... all of tt03. which has a LOT of moments esp with tim's grief for kon being directly paralleled to cassie's, etc., and also some of the stuff before kon's death too, but. unfortunately it is tt03 which is to say it's... not a very good comic. at least i was kinda forcing myself to read it for a good chunk. like, worth it to know the story but man.
and THEN i would say. the adventure comics (2011? i think) run issue #3 TIMKON MOMENT EVER. also the red robin... forgetting the number sorryyyy but they hug and it's good.
that's about all i got for the moment but i hope it's a decent starting point!!!!! <3

Hi hi! I have a question! Um, I’m VERY new to DC comic books and such. I rewatched the 2003 Teen Titans after years of having not seen it again. Binged it through twice, and that’s when I decided I wanted to get into DC more (mainly with the batfam), but… I have NO idea where to start. I hope to read all of it one day, but as of now, I’m having difficulties finding a starting point. Can you help me at all? <:3
aw hi!! i think it's great you're getting into DC and i'd love to help ^.^
this is a little bit of a tough question cause there's just so much ground to cover and so many potential ways to read, but i am a firm believer that having fun & reading what you want is the most important thing!
so, i think it really depends on who your favorite character is and what you want to see more of! also please forgive me if this gets really long
generally, if you're looking for more light, fluffy and fanon-based writing (like 2012 Avengers, 'they all live in the tower together' vibes) i'd say read Wayne Family Adventures, its free on webtoon!
if you're looking for more on Bruce and Batman specifically, i'd say you could start with Year One, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory and Year 2. i think this is a good summary of Batman's earlier years and Robin's first few years too. if you liked The Batman (2022) you'll like these
if you're looking for more on Dick Grayson and Nightwing specifically, right now I'd say read Tom Taylor's run. it just ended last year, and i think it lets his character shine. the art style is really pretty too. Nightwing is a hard character to read sometimes because he's had so many runs and the writers have a bad habit of self-inserting themselves as him and making poor writing choices. Batman and Robin (2009-2011) also shows Dick stepping into his role as Batman after battle for the cowl
Tom Taylor is also did a 15 issue Titans run, if you like his version of Nightwing
if you're looking for more on Jason Todd and Redhood, i'd say start with 'death in the family', then 'red hood and the outlaws' and you could also read 'red hood: lost days'. i think he also has a webtoon comic but I haven't read it so i can't say
if you're looking for more of Tim Drake and Red Robin, definitely read Red Robin. it's by Christopher Yost who wrote one of my favorite cartoons (Avengers EMH) and it summarizes Tim's character and struggles really well. it also shows when he lost his spleen and other things that get referenced on tumblr a lot
if you want more Damian and Robin, i'd say read Robin (2021). it definitely gives better insight on who Damian is, why he's the way that he is and his relationship with the other members of the family. you could also read Batman and Robin (2009-2011) as a precursor.
Batgirls is a little harder, because i struggle with the way they write the female characters sometime.
if you want more Cassandra Cain and Batgirl/Black Bat, definitely read the Batgirl (2000-2006) run. it's widely considered the best for her and i personally liked it a lot.
i don't really have any suggestions for Steph and Barbara, but Batgirls (2022-2023) has Cass, Steph and Barbara in it. i think it was a fun series but i didn't end up finishing it
for comics especially, i like to browse around online for the character's i like and kinda go off of what i see. i use comic herald to find reading orders too! they get kind complicated but their beginner's guide is helpful
honestly, if you have the means and there's a comic book store near you, i'd say go down there and browse around. a huge thing that got me into comic books as a kid was my dad taking me to the store and letting me shop around and look at what i wanted
comics are awesome and there's no right or wrong way to read them--just find what interests you, what characters you like and go from there ^.^
if you need more help with anything or wanna chat comics, you can always message me too! i really hope this helped somewhat :)
(also the DCAU is awesome, and some of the movies can help point you in the direction of more comics you like!)
if anyone has anything more to add or suggestions, they're absolutely welcome

alrighty, I went through my dc universe infinite history (keeping in mind, this does NOT include stuff I read on other sites or stuff I own physically. For example, somewhere I have a nearly complete collection including all of the new 52 Birds of Prey run)
The Boy Wonder #1-4 The Long Halloween #1-13 Robin Lives #428, #1 #2 The New Titans #1, #43-45, Annual #3, #60-65 Batman (1940) #402, #426-429, #440-443, #448-449, #652-#660, #663-666 Batman Urban Legends #6 #10 #4 #5 DC vs Vampires #1-12 Batman/Superman World’s Finest #1-6 The Titans #17-#18 Detective Comics (2016) #940-971, #1000 Blackest Night Batman #1-3 Red Robin #1-26 Teen Titans (2003) #1-55 Nightwing (2016) #1, Fear State Impulse #1 Young Justice #1-12, 80 page giant, #40 Batman Gotham Adventures #1 Batman (2016) #130-150 Batman and The Signal #1-3 Nightwing (1996) #100-103, #106 Adventure Comics (2009) #3 Batman and Robin (2011) #31 Red Hood and the Outlaws (2016) #1-9 Joker: Last Laugh #6 Batman: Battle For the Cowl #1-3 Azrael: Death’s Dark Knight #1 Gotham Gazette: Batman Dead? #1 Convergence: Batgirl #1-2 Batgirl: Secret Files and Origins #1 Detective Comics (1937) #734, #819-827 Blackest Night #0-1 Green Lantern (2005) #43 Superman (1987) #70 Red Hood: The Hill #1-2 Robin (1993) #175-182 Tim Drake: Robin #1-6 Knight Terrors: Robin #1-2 Robin (1991) #1-4 Teen Titans (2011) #1 Robins: Robins Being Robin We Are Robin #7-8 The Batman Who Laughs #1-7
growing up, new52 birds of prey was my first and only subscription to a comic, but we'd go through the $1 back issues bins all the time and just pick up whatever had a cool cover and that behavior definitely stayed with me lol
