but price is the one that launches into swinging. there is no warning, no hesitation. taking a step, even a single word against you, warrants immediate action in his mind. it's no laughing fucking matter. you are a top fucking prize, his prize, the best the world has to offer. john is rabid in his protection, bearing tooth and boot and claw and fist. there’s no point in talking to him or trying to negotiate, an offense is an offense and he won’t meet it halfway. someone looks at you the wrong way? they won't be able to see out of swollen eyes after headbutts them, crushing their nose. someone whispers something nasty about you? good luck even eating with that jaw wired shut. god forbid someone touches you, the other three boys can barely hold him back. john will break countless bones in every way he knows and beat his knuckles bloody if your smile starts to drop.

You know what one of my favorite tropes is?

When reader starts dating someone in the 141 and quickly finds out that they’re a package deal.

The first time you meet the rest of them (very early on) they’re hovering around the edges, just waiting to be let into the group, like a pack of shy dogs wanting attention and to be loved but scared of demanding it, scared of frightening you away.

And then you look at all of them, truly look—at this captain who always has to be right. If he’s not right 100% of the time then people he cares about get hurt.

At this lieutenant, already chewed up and spit out by the world. More scars than skin at this point. You wonder how many people only see the scars and not the shivering body underneath it, waiting for a soft touch.

At this handsome sergeant, with the weight of the world on his shoulders, trying to follow in his captains footsteps, but the steps are so large he scrambles behind, always feeling like he’s never going to catch up.

At this energetic sergeant who has been shooed away again and again, never finding the person with the patience to deal with his attention. Always loud, always restless, looking forward to the next thing.

And you’re standing there looking at them—deciding if you want to let them into your home, into your life.

Because they are a unit, and you can pull one out for a short time but they will end up wound back into the twisted rope before the end.

So you do.

You let them in.

But they are dogs through and through. Pack animals to their core and you’re part of them now.

No going back from here.

something that has always fascinated me about the dynamic between ghost and soap is how their vices perfectly complement each other.

soap is a good soldier because he is a righteous and committed man (let's get ourselves a win) but has a tendency towards anger (i will blow your brains out i swear i will do it) and wrath (are you serious he is right fucking there) while ghost is a competent and confident man (choices have consequencea) albeit with a tendency towards pride (pay attention you just might learn something) and arrogance (i have seen better - who? - me).

both of these characteristics could lead to tension within a unit - but they make ghost and soap work together perfectly because they enable each other. soap gets to overkill for ghost (about to play rough with the shadows - i like the sound of that) and ghost shows off for soap (gonna do this one my way, watch - fucking brautiful, sir).

even in moments where they try to reign themselves in, the other makes sure they dont have to - ghost validates soap's anger (it was the right call at the time - at the time.) and soap validates ghost's ego (you want to be better than me - i got my work cut out for me then).

what a perfect pair they make.
